Friday's nine-race program at Santa Anita Park is a mixed dirt-and-turf card featuring maiden claimers, a starter optional claiming event, and two allowance optional claiming grass races that serve as the headline attractions. Race 3 (Allowance Optional Claiming, 1⅛ miles turf) and Race 9 (Allowance Optional Claiming, 6½ furlongs downhill turf) are the quality anchors of the afternoon. Turf rails are set at 20 feet for all grass events, slightly lengthening the run to the first turn and favoring horses with tactical speed and efficient ground-saving trips.

Notable scratches: Darlin' Duchess (4) in Race 4 (Veterinarian), Midway Lane (5) in Race 5 (Veterinarian — returned to entry), Crypto Ride (3) in Race 8 (Veterinarian — returned to entry), and So I'm Told (6) in Race 8 (Also-Eligible — returned to entry).

Weather and Track Conditions

Conditions in Arcadia, California on April 3 are expected to be mild and dry, consistent with typical Southern California spring weather. Afternoon temperatures are forecast to reach the upper 60s to low 70°F, with cool mornings in the mid-50s and light winds. No measurable rain is anticipated. Both the main dirt track and turf courses are expected to be listed as Fast and Firm, respectively. The turf rail at 20 feet is firm enough to reward horses with a sharp turn of foot over deep late-closers.

Track Bias and Post Position Notes

On the main dirt track, speed is rewarded heavily in sprints, with horses on or near the early lead winning a majority of short-route and sprint events at the current meet. In dirt routes, pace-pressers and stalkers within two to three lengths of the leader entering the far turn have a consistent edge over sustained late runners.

In turf routes with the rail at 20 feet, stalking trips sitting one to four lengths off the pace have a slight statistical edge. Inside posts save ground but require clean breaks. Middle posts (3–6) tend to offer the most versatile trip options in turf routes.

For the 6½-furlong downhill turf course (Race 9), speed and stalking styles dominate over closers. Inside posts 1–3 are at a slight disadvantage on the downhill due to the right-hand crossing early in the race. Middle to outside posts (4–9) tend to offer cleaner, more comfortable paths down the hill, especially in large fields.

Race-by-Race Notes

Race 1 — Maiden Claiming, 6 Furlongs Turf, $50,000 | 1:00 PM

Pace: Moderate, with forward types from the rail and middle of the gate projecting to be involved early. The small six-horse field and inside rail position favor horses securing a hedge along the inside.

Key Contenders: Throwthefirstpunch (1) draws the rail for the Doug O'Neill barn with Emisael Jaramillo up. The Jaramillo–O'Neill combination in maiden turf sprints is consistently aggressive and well placed. Luck Lucky (IRE) (2) for Phil D'Amato and Antonio Fresu has Irish turf breeding that fits this surface and trip ideally. D'Amato's barn is one of the premier turf operations in California and regularly wins maiden claimers with lightly raced grass types.

Secondary Choices: Sterling Sea (3), the stablemate of Luck Lucky (IRE) (2) from the D'Amato barn, is a logical contender. Jetway (4) and Sigma Boy (6) both represent the John Sadler barn, which handles turf class drops effectively.

Longshots: Scorching Hot (5) for trainer Robert Lucas is the clear outsider but could pick up minor award money in a small field if the pace collapses.

Race 2 — Maiden Claiming, 1 Mile Dirt, $12,500 | 1:29 PM

Pace: Moderate to slightly contested, with several three-year-olds projecting forward in the early going. Saturday (2) and Itsnotrocket (5) are the most likely pace-pressers.

Key Contenders: Saturday (2) for trainer Ryan Hanson with Kazushi Kimura is the primary win selection. Kimura handles dirt routes well, and the Hanson barn places horses aggressively at this level. Itsnotrocket (5) for O. J. Jauregui with Abel Lezcano is another forwardly placed type with a stalking profile and upside.

Secondary Choices: Bretts Acclaim (1) from the rail may show good early speed but is vulnerable late if pressured. Nickdaboss (6) has the outside post to stalk the pace in the clear and could make a late run if the leaders tire.

Longshots: Audible Silence (3), the lone older horse in the field, and Another Juanito (4) are more likely minor award candidates unless the pace scenario breaks their way.

Race 3 — Allowance Optional Claiming, 1⅛ Miles Turf, $100,000 opt. | 2:00 PM

Pace: Moderate; Gran Oriente (CHI) (1) could show inside speed, but the small, classy field should produce a measured pace favoring stalkers sitting second or third.

Key Contenders: Hiding In Honduras (4) has compiled a perfect recent record at the meet and is coming in on a strong form cycle. Juan Hernandez's tactical intelligence in turf routes is a major asset. The Padre (IRE) (5) for Phil D'Amato and Antonio Fresu has European turf breeding ideally suited to a firm grass course at this distance.

Secondary Choices: Mi Hermano Ramon (2) for Mark Glatt with Jaramillo has quality back form and is tactically versatile. Cabo Spirit (3) is a seven-year-old gelding with back class under Hall of Famer Mike Smith for George Papaprodromou and remains competitive in small, even fields.

Longshots: Gran Oriente (CHI) (1) could steal it at long odds if left alone on the lead, and Astronomer (6) may close for a piece from midpack for trainer Simon Callaghan.

Race 4 — Maiden Claiming, 6 Furlongs Dirt, $32,000 | 2:30 PM

Pace: Contested; multiple fillies project to show early speed, with Lively Girl (1), Hot Rod Christine (2), and Mischievous Bev (7) all capable of early foot. Note: Darlin' Duchess (4) is scratched (Veterinarian).

Key Contenders: Mischievous Bev (7) for Adam Kitchingman with Jaramillo is the top selection. The outside draw gives Jaramillo options, and Kitchingman has a strong record placing maiden claimers in spots they can win. Lively Girl (1) for Vladimir Cerin with Armando Ayuso controls the rail and has the combination of early speed and a proven trainer at this level.

Secondary Choices: Hot Rod Christine (2) for Tim McCanna with Kyle Frey is a logical contender if she shows improvement in this spot. The barn is known for second- and third-out improvers.

Longshots: Hard Hearted (3), Can You Dream (5), and Grape Juice Too (6) need significant form improvement and are best used for minor award positions in trifecta combinations.

Race 5 — Maiden Claiming, 1 Mile Turf, $50,000 | 3:02 PM

Pace: Measured, with Fight Back (1) and Sand Bagger (2) projecting to lead. Stalkers sitting second to fourth in a ground-saving position should have the best trip. Note: Midway Lane (5) (Veterinarian scratch in February) has returned to the entry.

Key Contenders: Midway Lane (5) for John Sadler with Jaramillo represents a significant class relief drop from maiden special weight into $50,000 claiming. The drop signal is strong. Fight Back (1) for Vladimir Cerin with Juan Hernandez is a five-year-old with experience who should control or press the pace from the rail and relish the class level.

Secondary Choices: Both Sides Of Bad (3) for Jeff Mullins with Fresu has the Mullins–Fresu turf combination and a stalking profile that suits the firm grass. Silver Ice (4) for Tim McCanna and Fausto (6) for Robert Hess Jr. are logical underneath players with route experience.

Longshots: Sand Bagger (2) for Gary Stute with Tyler Baze may show early speed but is vulnerable in the stretch. Missile Cruiser (7) for Val Brinkerhoff is the outer of the group and would need a pace collapse to factor.

Race 6 — Claiming, 6 Furlongs Dirt, $10,000 | 3:33 PM

Pace: Highly contested with multiple speed elements; Sheza Gemini Jewel (1), Syntax (2), Tough Virginia (3), and Molly Jensen (5) can all show early speed.

Key Contenders: Subtle Knowledge (7) for Jeff Mullins with Jaramillo is the top selection from the outside post. The Mullins–Jaramillo pairing at this level is a high-percentage combination. Syntax (2) for Edward Freeman with Juan Hernandez can be placed just off the pace and benefits from one of the best tactical riders at the meet.

Secondary Choices: Molly Jensen (5) for Mark Glatt with Ricardo Gonzalez is well placed here after likely tougher prior assignments, and Glatt handles claiming sprinters effectively. Keep The Pavels (6) for Sally Rivera with Frey is another to consider for minor awards.

Longshots: Sheza Gemini Jewel (1), Tough Virginia (3), and Can'tdealwithit (4) are pace-dependent types that could hit the board at a price if the main contenders tire or encounter traffic.

Race 7 — Maiden Special Weight, 1 Mile Turf (Cal-Bred), $70,000 | 4:03 PM

Pace: Moderate; Jennys Wine Girl (2), Joyful Mischief (1), and Warm Reception (8) can all press forward. Nine-horse field with several unknowns creates potential for an upset.

Key Contenders: All In The Game (7) for Craig Lewis with Juan Hernandez is the top pick. Hernandez's turf route skill plus a mid-outside draw that allows a ground-saving stalking trip makes this combination dangerous. First Light (6) for Carla Gaines with Armando Ayuso fits the profile of a Gaines-trained runner peaking off a few starts, ideally placed in midpack or just behind the leaders.

Secondary Choices: Warm Reception (8) for Peter Miller with Vicente Del-Cid is another quality contender; Miller's Cal-bred turf runners improve with added distance. Jennys Wine Girl (2) for Richard Baltas with Edwin Maldonado could attempt to lead and steal if allowed to set a modest pace.

Longshots: Joyful Mischief (1), G'oro (3), Mperfection (4), Little Sandy Bee (5), and Judy Lynn Starr (9) appear more like exotics fillers, though G'oro (3) for Leonard Powell is the most interesting of the group as a late-developing mare with stamina.

Race 8 — Starter Optional Claiming, 1 Mile Dirt, $16,000 opt. | 4:33 PM

Pace: Lively; Leyas Candy (8), Joint Venture (1), Mighty Kai (2), and Ballyhooligan (4) can all show early speed in what could become a multi-horse pace duel. Note: Crypto Ride (3) and So I'm Told (6) have returned to the entry after prior scratch status.

Key Contenders: Leyas Candy (8) for Andrew Harris with Edwin Maldonado is the primary selection. Maldonado is one of the most aggressive front-end riders in California, and the outside draw gives him the option to clear early and control the fractions. Duran (5) for George Papaprodromou with Florent Geroux is a high-quality stalking type; Geroux's presence is a notable positive and he excels at timing late runs in route events.

Secondary Choices: Joint Venture (1) for Ron Ellis with Juan Hernandez has the rail and benefits if the pace scenario sets up for a stalker saving ground. Crypto Ride (3) for Simon Hobson with Frey returns from scratch and fits on class.

Longshots: Mighty Kai (2), Ballyhooligan (4), So I'm Told (6), and Druidic (7) are viable for minor award positions in exotics if the pace plays into their hands.

Race 9 — Allowance Optional Claiming, 6½ Furlongs Downhill Turf, $80,000 opt. | 5:03 PM

Pace: Strong early fractions expected in this 12-horse field, with War At Sea (2), Charlie's To Blame (1), Drop Um (4), and Balladeer (10) all capable of attending the pace down the hill. The unique right-hand crossing at the start of the downhill favors mid-to-outside posts.

Key Contenders: Proof He Rides (5) for Jeff Mullins with Kyle Frey is the top selection. Mullins is an elite trainer with downhill turf sprinters and Proof He Rides (5) fits the profile of a horse who can sit close to the hot pace and get first run on closers. Dhitjari (GB) (3) for John Sadler with Mike Smith brings European turf sprint pedigree and Smith's deep expertise navigating the unique hillside course.

Secondary Choices: War At Sea (2) for Ron Ellis with Kazushi Kimura has tactical speed and turf stamina that allows him to carry his pace down the hill. Balladeer (10) for George Papaprodromou with Edwin Maldonado is a forwardly placed type capable of getting a good stalking position outside the main pace duel. Virat (8) for Dan Blacker with Hector Berrios is a midpack runner with a strong finishing kick and an ideal post to avoid pace trouble.

Longshots: Anmer Hall (12) for Peter Eurton with Antonio Fresu gets the widest draw, which avoids early traffic and gives Fresu options. Son Of A Birch (6) for Robert Falcone Jr. with Florent Geroux has back class and could move late if the leaders tire. Nesso's Lastharrah (9), American Hope (7), Mischief River (11), and Charlie's To Blame (1) round out the exotics possibilities.
