Delaware Park cancelled their live racing card scheduled for Wednesday, September 3rd due to insufficient entries. The cancellation was announced on Friday morning, August 28th, according to a press release from the track. This type of cancellation occurs when not enough horses are entered to fill out a complete racing program, making it financially unviable for the track to proceed with the scheduled races. The track’s decision to cancel and reschedule helps ensure competitive field sizes for future racing cards.
Delaware Park is a thoroughbred horse racing track and casino located in Stanton, Delaware, just outside Wilmington city limits. It is the only thoroughbred horse racing track in the state of Delaware and operates as a full-service entertainment complex with racing, casino gaming, and other amenities.
Delaware Park runs thoroughbred races from May to October. The track has gained recognition for attracting quality horses, with average purses of $30,650 in 2005 that ranked Delaware fifth nationally among U.S. states.
The track has been the launching pad for several major racing stars, including near-Triple Crown winner Afleet Alex and Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro, both of whom won their career debuts at Delaware Park. The track is also unique as the only mid-Atlantic track to regularly card Arabian races.
