LAUREL PARK RACE DAY OVERVIEW — FRIDAY, APRIL 25, 2026

Today's card at Laurel Park arrives at a fascinating moment in the track's history. The Maryland Stadium Authority's recent $48.5 million purchase of Laurel Park for conversion to a training center has created an unusual dynamic at the mid-Atlantic's workhorse oval, while the racing operation continues under the 1/ST Racing banner. The backdrop of Churchill Downs Incorporated's $85 million acquisition of the Preakness Stakes intellectual property adds an additional layer of intrigue to the region's racing future. With Taj Mahal's dominant Federico Tesio victory last weekend and Iron Honor's redirection toward the May 16 Preakness at Laurel Park, the mid-Atlantic racing scene is buzzing heading into the summer.

Today's 10-race card spans both turf and dirt, ranging from maiden $12,500 claimers to a featured $53,000 optional claiming event in Race 9. The turf gets a full workout today with Races 1, 5, 6, 8, and 10 contested over the green. Distances range from 6 furlongs on the turf in Races 1 and 6, out to 1 3/16 miles on the dirt in Races 4, 5, and 9. The card leans heavily toward the lower claiming ranks and maiden ranks, providing plenty of exotic wagering opportunities for the patient handicapper.

Several notable trainer-jockey combinations are active throughout the card. Mychel Sanchez picks up key mounts for Michael Trombetta in Race 5 and elsewhere. Jevian Toledo, one of the meet's leading jockeys, is positioned on Frye Island (2) in the opener and Red Dawn Coming (8) in Race 5. Yedsit Hazlewood has a full book of work throughout the day. The Ness barn saddles three in the turf sprint in Race 5, an unusual strategy worth noting.

WEATHER AND TRACK CONDITIONS

As of the morning of April 24, the Baltimore-Washington corridor is tracking partly cloudy skies with temperatures in the mid-60s Fahrenheit by post time for the first race at noon. Winds out of the southwest at approximately 10-15 mph are expected, which should not materially affect turf racing conditions. No significant precipitation is forecast through the conclusion of the card, which bodes well for a firm turf course and a fast main track.

The Laurel Park turf course has been playing well this spring, with reports indicating a firm-to-good rating expected for today's action. Given the dry week leading into Friday, the inside paths on the turf could be showing some wear, particularly in the stretch areas where traffic has concentrated during the meet. Horses able to save ground early while leaving enough room to swing out at the top of the stretch have been rewarded. On the main track, Laurel has shown a moderate speed bias this spring, with pace-presser types — horses that sit just off the leader — getting the best of it more often than pure frontrunners. Rail positions on the dirt have been somewhat neutral.

TRACK AND POST POSITION BIAS

On the turf at Laurel Park this spring, post position has been a meaningful factor in shorter grass routes. In the 1 3/16-mile turf events, horses with middle-to-outside draws have fared well, as the first turn is reached quickly enough that outside posts don't represent the severe disadvantage seen at some tighter ovals. For the 6-furlong turf sprints, inside posts carry slightly more value due to the straight run into the first turn and the ability to save ground. The consensus from local handicappers is that posts 3 through 7 have been optimal for most turf distances at Laurel this meet.

On the dirt, the main track has been favoring horses with early pace who can settle into a stalking position. Pure wire-to-wire frontrunners have been vulnerable late, particularly in routes over a mile. The rail has not been a significant negative on the dirt, but horses forced extremely wide on the first turn in route races have faced an uphill battle. In sprints, posts 1 through 5 on dirt have been roughly neutral, with no dramatic bias evident.

Post position in today's specific races will be addressed in detail below.

RACE 1 — Post (12:00)/11:00/10:00/9:00 — 1210f | T | C | Clm 16000n2l | BUN | Purse $24,000

This is a 1 1/16-mile turf claimer for horses that have never won two lifetime races, with a $16,000 claiming price and a $24,000 purse. With 15 horses entered, this is a full field and potentially a chaotic opener on the turf. The “never won two lifetime” condition means we're dealing with a mix of first-time winners and maiden graduates, some of whom have been knocking on the door for multiple starts. Identifying horses with legitimate improvement angles is critical in this type of condition.

Race 1

Pace Analysis

With 15 horses entered at a mile and a sixteenth on turf, pace is going to be a central factor. Several of these horses have shown frontrunning tendencies, but the distance and the turf surface generally favor horses that can relax off the pace. Expect a moderate early pace scenario where two or three horses contest the lead through the first half-mile, with the race setting up for a closer or stalker to swoop late. Horses drawn inside with tactical speed will be in the best position to control the race without expending too much energy.

Key Contenders

Frye Island (2) is the morning-line favorite at 2-1 and the top selection from multiple handicappers. Trained by Anthony Farrior, who has been among the more active and effective conditioners at this meet, Frye Island (2) picks up Jevian Toledo, the meet's top jockey. The combination of Farrior and Toledo at this level is difficult to fade. Frye Island (2) draws post 2, which is ideal for a turf route at Laurel, allowing Toledo to find a comfortable early position near the inside without being trapped. The horse appears to be a cut above at this condition level and should be respected.

Call Me A Cab (12) is the morning-line second choice at 3-1, trained by Hugh McMahon and ridden by Yedsit Hazlewood. McMahon has shown a good feel for placing horses and spotting them in spots where they can win. The outside draw from post 12 in a 15-horse field is a legitimate concern on the turf, as Call Me A Cab (12) will need to use early speed to find a position or alternatively drop far back and hope for room late. Hazlewood has been adept at navigating traffic in routes. The horse merits consideration but the post is a genuine negative.

Twirling Express (13) at 8-1 from trainer Elliott Soto-Martinez with Francisco Martinez up is a horse that multiple handicappers have circled as a value selection. From post 13, the same post position concern applies as with Call Me A Cab (12), but 8-1 represents a better price if the horse can overcome the draw. Twirling Express (13) may benefit from a contested early pace scenario where closers are rewarded.

Secondary Choices

Dancing Bear (8) at 4-1 for trainer James Lawrence with Taylor Kingsley aboard is a secondary selection that draws favorably at post 8 and appears to have legitimate form at this condition level. Lawrence has had some quiet success at the meet, and Dancing Bear (8) is worth including in multi-race wagers.

Strand Road (14) at 12-1 for Richard Dutrow with Angel Cruz is worth watching. Dutrow remains a capable barn at the lower claiming levels, and Cruz has been active at the meet. The outside draw from post 14 hurts, but Dutrow horses at this price occasionally outrun their number.

Ballycurrin (7) at 15-1 from Mary Eppler's barn with H.A. Karamanos aboard is a horse that finds a reasonable post at 7 and could be live at a price. Eppler is a quiet but competent trainer at this level.

Longshots

Leigh's Last Hero (15) at 12-1 from post 15 for trainer Michelle Castillo with Abner Adorno is buried in the far outside and faces a very difficult post position challenge in a 15-horse turf field. The morning-line odds don't reflect the post position penalty adequately.

Raging Cajun (1) at 10-1 for Sarah White with Carlos Eduardo Lopez has post 1, which is the best turf post available. At 10-1, if Raging Cajun (1) has any tactical ability, the post alone makes this an interesting longer-priced play in exotic wagering.

Dats Tap (11) at 12-1 for Somraj Singh with Ismerio Villalobos is a longshot from post 11. Singh has had occasional success at this level, but 12-1 in a 15-horse field with an outside draw is a difficult ticket to cash.

Go To Bingo (10) at 20-1 for Susan Cooney with Jose Vargas is a deeper longshot that lacks the profile to overcome the outside draw and the morning-line price.

Paul's Guitar (9) at 20-1 for Jonathan Maldonado with Jeiron Barbosa rounds out the mid-range longshots. Maldonado has multiple horses entered today at Laurel.

El Junior (5) at 20-1 for Rodolfo Sanchez-Salomon with Raul Mena is from a trainer-jockey combination that appears multiple times on today's card. The price reflects a lack of competitive form.

Bad Boy Blaze (3) at 30-1 and In Honor Of Jeff (4) at 30-1, both from Alberto Delgado's barn, are double-figure longshots that would surprise significantly at those morning-line prices. Entering two horses from the same trainer at the same 30-1 ML price in a claiming race is a red flag from a betting standpoint, as neither appears to be a primary stable intention.

Box Of Rockets (6) at 30-1 for Bobby Lee Plummer with Yomar Ortiz is another extreme longshot that does not merit serious wagering consideration based on current form indicators.

Betting Strategy

Structure this race as a single on Frye Island (2) in the win pool if the odds remain in the 2-1 range, understanding that the short price limits return potential. For exacta wagering, use Frye Island (2) on top with Twirling Express (13), Dancing Bear (8), and Call Me A Cab (12) underneath. For trifecta coverage, include Raging Cajun (1) in third position given the favorable inside post at a price of 10-1. The Pick 3 opener should include Frye Island (2) as a possible single depending on race 2 and 3 structure.

Selections

Win: Frye Island (2) Place: Twirling Express (13) Show: Dancing Bear (8)

RACE 2 — Post (12:29)/11:29/10:29/9:29 — 1320f | D | M | Md 12500 | BON | Purse $22,000

A maiden $12,500 claimer going one mile on the dirt for males. This is the lowest rung of the ladder at Laurel Park, and these races often produce surprising results. With only seven horses entered, the field is manageable and the pace scenario becomes clearer. The $22,000 purse at this level is modest, meaning horses stretching out or dropping down aggressively warrant close attention.

Race 2

Pace Analysis

Seven horses going a mile at the bottom maiden claiming level. Flying To Work (5) is the even-money morning-line favorite, suggesting connections believe strongly in this horse's chances. With a small field, pace scenarios tend to resolve more clearly. If Flying To Work (5) shows any early speed, it could be difficult to run down, but a one-mile dirt route at this level for maidens can produce dramatic late runs from horses that simply haven't found their best trip yet.

Key Contenders

Flying To Work (5) is the odds-on morning-line choice at 1-1 for Rodolfo Sanchez-Salomon with Angel Cruz. At even money in a maiden $12,500 route, this horse has drawn strong support. Cruz is an active rider at the meet and Sanchez-Salomon runs horses regularly at Laurel. Post 5 in a seven-horse field is neutral to slightly favorable. The question at 1-1 is whether the odds represent genuine value or simply money chasing a name that has been bet down. Maiden claimers at this level rarely deserve to go off at odds this short unless the horse has shown consistent figure ability.

Dan Gamble (3) at 2-1 for Justin Nixon with Martina Rojas is the clear second choice. Nixon is a competent trainer for this level, and Dan Gamble (3) draws post 3, which is among the most favorable positions for a dirt mile at Laurel. At 2-1 with a favorable draw, Dan Gamble (3) represents the best value in the race from a price-to-probability standpoint.

Gonzalo (4) at 3-1 for Pedro Nazario with Paul Luna is a horse that handicappers have also identified as a legitimate contender. Nazario is active at the meet with multiple horses entered today, and Gonzalo (4) at 3-1 offers a slightly better price than Dan Gamble (3). The inside-to-mid draw from post 4 in a seven-horse field is workable.

Secondary Choices

Mrsaltn'vinegar (2) at 6-1 from Pedro Nazario's barn again, with Jose Batista aboard, gives Nazario two entries in this race alongside Gonzalo (4). When a trainer enters two horses in the same race at the maiden claiming level, the question becomes which represents the primary effort. At 6-1, Mrsaltn'vinegar (2) is the longer-priced of the pair. If Nazario's horses split the betting interest, one could outrun its odds significantly.

Longshots

Zimba (6) at 10-1 for Joanne Shankle with Raul Mena is a longer-priced option that could show improvement around one turn and the second turn on this route. Shankle is a steady trainer who wins at a reasonable rate at Laurel.

Billy Boy (7) at 15-1 for Anthony Aguirre with Yomar Ortiz is an outside draw longshot that faces a difficult path in a seven-horse field. The outside post in a route at this level is not as damaging as it would be in a larger field, but 15-1 suggests limited recent form.

Baby Bobby (1) at 30-1 for Somraj Singh with Matilda Burnham is an extreme longshot from a trainer who also saddles Dats Tap (11) in Race 1. At 30-1 in a seven-horse field, Baby Bobby (1) faces long odds that are difficult to overcome at this distance and level.

Betting Strategy

This race calls for caution with the even-money favorite. Use Dan Gamble (3) and Gonzalo (4) as the primary win selections and construct exactas across the top three with Flying To Work (5). If Flying To Work (5) drifts to 7-5 or higher at post time, a win bet becomes more defensible. The Nazario double entry with Mrsaltn'vinegar (2) and Gonzalo (4) means that one of those horses could be let up; focus on Gonzalo (4) as the more likely Nazario runner with the better price.

Selections

Win: Dan Gamble (3) Place: Gonzalo (4) Show: Flying To Work (5)

RACE 3 — Post (12:57)/11:57/10:57/9:57 — 1760f | D | S | Md Sp Wt | BON | Purse $47,000

A maiden special weight event going a mile and an eighth on the dirt for fillies and mares. At $47,000, this is a meaningful purse for this condition, and the six-horse field makes analysis considerably more tractable. Maiden special weight races for fillies at this distance often produce first-time starters or horses with limited experience, making connections and morning-line pricing important cues.

Race 3

Pace Analysis

Six fillies going 1 1/8 miles on the dirt. This is the longest dirt distance on today's card outside of the route races in Races 4 and 9. A six-horse field at this distance will typically produce a moderate pace scenario. The key is identifying which horse has the class and stamina to sustain late, as maiden special weight fillies at routes often produce tiring frontrunners who get run down in the final sixteenth.

Key Contenders

Sir George (1) at 2-1 for Michael Gorham with Raul Mena is one of two morning-line co-favorites in this small field. Post 1 on the rail in a 1 1/8-mile dirt route is not inherently disadvantageous in a six-horse field, but the horse will need early pace cooperation to avoid being boxed in. Mena is a capable rider who handles rail trips well. Gorham is a respected trainer at the mid-Atlantic level.

Ballinaclash (3) at 2-1 also from a different barn, trained by Phil Schoenthal with Yedsit Hazlewood aboard. Two co-favorites at 2-1 in a six-horse maiden special weight field is unusual and suggests genuine uncertainty at the top of the wagering. Schoenthal and Hazlewood have been active at this meet, and Ballinaclash (3) draws post 3, which is the most favorable position in the field from a pace and positioning standpoint. Of the two co-favorites, the post position edge belongs to Ballinaclash (3).

Virginia Gentry (6) at 3-1 for Michael Trombetta with Mychel Sanchez is a horse that commands significant respect. Trombetta is one of the most accomplished trainers at Laurel Park with an excellent record in maiden special weight events, particularly with fillies. Sanchez riding for Trombetta is a noteworthy combination throughout today's card. At 3-1, Virginia Gentry (6) may offer the best value among the top choices.

Secondary Choices

Dreams Of Rome (2) at 6-1 for Horacio De Paz with Angel Cruz comes from a barn with dual entries in this race — President Camacho (5) also trained by De Paz. When a trainer enters two at 6-1 and 6-1 in the same maiden special weight race, there is genuine uncertainty about which horse represents the primary effort. Cruz is on Dreams Of Rome (2) while Kevin Gomez takes the call on President Camacho (5). The jockey assignments can sometimes indicate preference; in this case, Cruz is among the more experienced riders.

President Camacho (5) at 6-1 for Horacio De Paz with Kevin Gomez is the second De Paz entry. At 6-1 with post 5, this filly has a workable draw and could represent the stable's better shot if De Paz has set the two entries at equal prices for strategic reasons.

Longshots

Margie's Last (4) at 10-1 for Georgia Andreadakis with Jeiron Barbosa is the lone longshot in this field. Andreadakis is a small stable operator at Laurel, and at 10-1 in a six-horse field, Margie's Last (4) faces a steep task. However, in six-horse maiden special weight races, the favorite doesn't always prevail, and Margie's Last (4) at double-digit odds is worth a small inclusion in trifecta wagering.

Betting Strategy

The key decision in this race is which of the two 2-1 horses — Sir George (1) or Ballinaclash (3) — represents the better play. The post position edge belongs to Ballinaclash (3), but Trombetta and Sanchez on Virginia Gentry (6) at 3-1 may represent the best combination of price and class. An exacta box of Ballinaclash (3), Virginia Gentry (6), and Dreams Of Rome (2) covers the most likely scenario while offering a reasonable return. If you want to take a stand, Virginia Gentry (6) at 3-1 is the preferred win selection given the trainer angle.

Selections

Win: Virginia Gentry (6) Place: Ballinaclash (3) Show: Dreams Of Rome (2)

RACE 4 — Post (1:28)/12:28/11:28/10:28 — 1980f | D | R | Alw 7500s | BUN | Purse $24,000

An allowance race going 1 1/4 miles on the dirt for horses that have won a race but are restricted in earnings or wins. The “Alw 7500s” designation with a $24,000 purse at 1 1/4 miles is one of the longer distances on the card today. Seven horses are entered, making this a straightforward betting race.

Race 4

Pace Analysis

1 1/4 miles on dirt with seven horses is a classic endurance test. Horses that have shown the ability to rate early and sustain a run over the final three furlongs will be at a premium. Masakado (7) as the 2-1 morning-line favorite suggests a horse with established form at or near this level. Early pace projections favor the stalkers in a race of this length, particularly those with figures that translate well at the distance.

Key Contenders

Masakado (7) at 2-1 for Richard Sillaman with Jose Vargas is the morning-line choice from post 7, the outside in a seven-horse field. At 1 1/4 miles, the outside post is less of a disadvantage than in shorter routes, and a horse with true class can overcome the distance disadvantage. Sillaman is a steady conditioner at Laurel, and Vargas has been one of the busier riders at the meet.

Hay Chief (5) at 4-1 for Hugh McMahon with Yedsit Hazlewood is a secondary choice that appears to have legitimate class at this allowance condition. McMahon with a 4-1 morning-line horse at a 1 1/4-mile allowance is worth noting — this is a barn that has shown awareness of placing horses in conditions where they can win.

White Series (6) at 5-1 for Phillip Capuano with Mychel Sanchez draws post 6, right next to Masakado (7). Capuano is an experienced trainer at the mid-Atlantic level, and Sanchez riding for him at this distance suggests the barn believes in the horse's stamina. At 5-1, White Series (6) is a solid second choice.

Secondary Choices

More Vino (1) at 6-1 for Jonathan Maldonado with Christopher Hernandez has the rail, which at 1 1/4 miles could be advantageous if the horse can settle into a stalking position without fighting for position at the first turn. Maldonado enters multiple horses today, and More Vino (1) at 6-1 deserves consideration.

Mr Scatter (3) at 6-1 for Michael Jones Jr. with Jeiron Barbosa is a horse tied in morning-line odds with More Vino (1). Jones is a quiet but effective trainer, and at 6-1, Mr Scatter (3) from post 3 has a workable draw.

Longshots

Striking Sparks (2) at 8-1 for Jose Rodriguez with Jose Batista is a deeper longshot that could outrun its morning-line price if there are fitness or form angles not reflected in the wagering.

It's Sizzling Time (4) at 10-1 for Valrie Smith with Jean Gregor Briceno is the longest-priced horse in this field. Smith is a smaller operation at Laurel, and 10-1 in a seven-horse allowance field is a significant discount. In exotic wagering, Striking Sparks (2) and It's Sizzling Time (4) can be included in trifectas at minimal cost.

Betting Strategy

Back Masakado (7) as the win selection while including Hay Chief (5) and White Series (6) in exacta and trifecta wagers underneath. The 2-1 price on Masakado (7) is acceptable for a win bet in a seven-horse field at an allowance level. An exacta of Masakado (7) over Hay Chief (5) and White Series (6) covers the two most logical outcomes.

Selections

Win: Masakado (7) Place: Hay Chief (5) Show: White Series (6)

RACE 5 — Post (1:59)/12:59/11:59/10:59 — 1870f | T | C | Clm 30000n2l | BUN | Purse $35,000

This is a 1 3/16-mile turf claimer for non-winners of two lifetime races with a $30,000 claiming price and a $35,000 purse. Thirteen horses are entered, creating the potential for a complex pace scenario on the turf at this longer distance. The “never won two” condition again produces a mix of maiden graduates and lightly raced improving types. Notably, Jamie Ness saddles three horses in this race — Sell It (2), Party With Smarty (3), and Tavern Time (9) — a significant strategic deployment that demands analysis.

Race 5

Pace Analysis

Thirteen horses at 1 3/16 miles on turf creates a complex early pace picture. At this distance, early speed is less premium than settling ability. The rail draw at post 1 — occupied by Wicked Boss (1) — could be a benefit or a curse depending on early traffic. With three Ness horses in the field splitting the same rider (Martin Chuan rides Sell It (2) and Party With Smarty (3) while Hazlewood takes Tavern Time (9)), the stable's intentions are somewhat unclear. The pace in turf routes at Laurel this spring has favored stalkers who can make a sustained run into the stretch.

Key Contenders

Patrick's Promise (4) at 2-1 for Michael Trombetta with Mychel Sanchez is the morning-line choice and commands the strongest consensus support from handicappers. Trombetta is a dominant force in Maryland turf racing, consistently preparing horses well for grass routes at this distance. Sanchez is the ideal partner for a Trombetta turf horse, particularly at 1 3/16 miles where positioning and rate are crucial. Post 4 is an excellent draw in a 13-horse turf field. At 2-1, Patrick's Promise (4) is likely to attract further money at post time and may be sent off below that price. The Trombetta-Sanchez combination on turf at Laurel is one of the most powerful trainer-jockey partnerships on the mid-Atlantic circuit.

Longhi (7) at 5-1 for H. Graham Motion with Jorge Ruiz is a horse that deserves significant respect. Motion is one of the preeminent turf trainers in North America, and anytime he enters a horse in a $30,000 turf claimer at Laurel, there is a reason to take notice. Longhi (7) draws post 7, which is favorable at this distance, and Ruiz is a capable jockey. At 5-1, this horse could be significantly underpriced if Motion has it pointed for a strong effort today.

Secondary Choices

Rhythm 'n Blues (6) at 4-1 for Jane Cibelli with Kevin Gomez is a horse that has drawn meaningful support and has a legitimate profile for this race. Cibelli is a competent trainer at this level, and Gomez has been riding well at the meet. Post 6 is workable at this turf distance.

Clavin (10) at 4-1 for Kieron Magee with Yedsit Hazlewood is also at 4-1 in the morning line. Magee is an active trainer with multiple horses on today's card, and Clavin (10) at post 10 in a 13-horse turf field faces a post position challenge. However, at a route distance, the outside post is more manageable, and Hazlewood riding multiple horses today suggests comfort with the track.

Tavern Time (9) at 5-1 from the Ness barn with Hazlewood aboard (note: Hazlewood also rides Clavin (10) — this may result in a jockey change that bears watching at morning scratches) represents one of the three Ness entries. Tavern Time (9) at 5-1 from post 9 has a workable draw and could emerge as the stable's best representative once jockey assignments are clarified.

Longshots

Wicked Boss (1) at 6-1 for Madison Meyers with Forest Boyce has the rail draw, which at 1 3/16 miles on turf at Laurel can be advantageous for a horse with tactical speed. At 6-1, Wicked Boss (1) represents genuine value if the horse can find a comfortable early position without being squeezed.

Sell It (2) at 8-1 and Party With Smarty (3) at 6-1, both from Ness, offer the same post position advantage of inside draws. With three Ness horses in the race, the actual odds on each may drift at post time as money disperses. Party With Smarty (3) at 6-1 from post 3 has the best draw of the three Ness entries.

Pencil Me In (12) at 15-1 for Timothy Keefe with H.A. Karamanos is a horse worth noting given Keefe's record with turf horses. At 15-1 from post 12, Pencil Me In (12) faces a significant post disadvantage but is worth a small inclusion in trifectas if the pace sets up for a late runner.

Dynaflame (13) at 10-1 for C. Beale Payne with Jose Vargas is buried at post 13 in a 13-horse turf route. At 10-1, Dynaflame (13) would need an unusually favorable pace scenario and a wide path to contend. The post position makes this difficult to recommend.

Brighty (5) at 12-1 for Rodolfo Sanchez-Salomon with Raul Mena has post 5, which is actually a solid draw. At 12-1, Brighty (5) could be a value inclusion in trifecta wagers, particularly if Sanchez-Salomon has found improvement.

Like Tyson (11) at 20-1 for Pedro Nazario with Jose Batista is a longshot with little obvious winning pathway at this price.

Red Dawn Coming (8) at 20-1 for Anthony Farrior with Jevian Toledo represents an interesting trainer-jockey combination at a big price. Farrior and Toledo are together on Frye Island (2) in the opener, and this represents a second collaboration on the card. At 20-1, Red Dawn Coming (8) is primarily of interest in exotic wagers.

Betting Strategy

The Ness three-way entry creates the most interesting betting angle of the card. If those horses are bet independently, their true combined probability is split among Sell It (2), Party With Smarty (3), and Tavern Time (9). Watch for jockey changes that might signal which Ness horse is the primary effort. Patrick's Promise (4) is the straightforward win selection at the morning-line odds, but Longhi (7) at 5-1 represents the best value play in the race given Motion's turf credentials. An exacta of Patrick's Promise (4) over Longhi (7) and Rhythm 'n Blues (6) is the core wager. For trifecta play, add Wicked Boss (1) and Party With Smarty (3).

Selections

Win: Patrick's Promise (4) Place: Longhi (7) Show: Rhythm 'n Blues (6)

RACE 6 — Post (2:31)/1:31/12:31/11:31 — 1210f | T | C | Clm 20000 | BUN | Purse $29,000

A six-furlong turf sprint open claiming at $20,000 with a $29,000 purse. This is the type of race where pace handicapping is most critical, as six furlongs on turf is a pure speed exercise with little room for late-running magic. Fourteen horses are entered, making this one of the larger fields of the day. Post position in a 6-furlong turf sprint at Laurel is meaningful, with inside draws generally preferred.

Race 6

Pace Analysis

Fourteen horses in a 6-furlong turf sprint is a recipe for a contested early pace. The question is how many horses have legitimate early pace and how much of that speed will take each other out. Bushido (1) at 2-1 from the rail is the clear morning-line favorite and likely to control the pace from the ideal post. With multiple speed horses likely to press from posts 1 through 5, there is a chance the pace becomes honest enough to allow a horse with slightly less early speed to pounce in the stretch. However, in a turf sprint at Laurel, a horse at 2-1 from the rail with gate speed is very difficult to beat.

Key Contenders

Bushido (1) at 2-1 for Lacey Gaudet with Forest Boyce is the commanding favorite from the best possible post. Gaudet has been a productive trainer at the Laurel meet, and Boyce is a capable jockey for this type of race. From post 1 in a 6-furlong turf sprint, Bushido (1) can dictate pace and save ground throughout. The 2-1 price is short, but the positional advantage is real. Multiple handicappers point to this horse as the most likely winner.

Gaslight Dancer (10) at 4-1 for Richard Dutrow with Yedsit Hazlewood is a horse that draws attention both for the trainer credentials and the price. Dutrow is an experienced hand at conditioning horses for turf sprints, and Gaslight Dancer (10) at 4-1 from post 10 represents the best value among the main contenders. Hazlewood is an experienced rider for this type of race. Despite the outside draw, if Gaslight Dancer (10) can find a comfortable position in the first quarter-mile, the horse has the ability to close into a contested pace.

Secondary Choices

Tough Workout (2) at 6-1 for Sarah White with Jorge Ruiz has post 2, an excellent draw adjacent to the favorite. At 6-1, Tough Workout (2) is the best-value horse with a legitimate inside position. Ruiz aboard for White suggests the barn is running a serious horse today.

Noah Chance (8) at 6-1 for John Robb with Xavier Perez is a horse that handicappers have identified as a secondary choice at a reasonable price. Robb is a capable trainer at this level, and Perez is an active rider. At post 8, Noah Chance (8) faces a moderate draw that requires early decisiveness.

Pit Stop Man (7) at 10-1 for Anthony Farrior with Jevian Toledo is worth noting given the active Farrior-Toledo partnership today. Toledo on a Farrior horse at 10-1 in a turf sprint is a legitimate angle. Post 7 is workable.

Longshots

Masen (13) at 10-1 for Karin Wagner with Angel Cruz is a longer-priced horse at post 13 in a 14-horse turf sprint. Cruz has been active today, and 10-1 from the outside represents a difficult path.

Lou's Birthday (9) at 12-1 for Daniel McKenzie with Kevin Gomez is a mid-range longshot with a workable post. McKenzie is a small but active barn.

Carnaby (6) at 12-1 for Felix Flores-Coba with Martin Chuan is a horse at 12-1 from post 6, which is a reasonable draw. Chuan rides multiple horses today for Ness and others.

Noble Jon (4) at 8-1 for Jonathan Maldonado with Ismerio Villalobos has one of the better posts among the longshots at post 4. Maldonado is active today, and Noble Jon (4) at 8-1 with an inside draw could outrun its price.

Cut Glass (3) at 20-1 for Maldonado with J. Pimentel is a third Maldonado entry on the card and at 20-1 is not a horse to take seriously in win wagering.

Catahoula Moon (5) at 20-1 for Jose Magana with Jean Gregor Briceno is a deep longshot from a smaller operation.

Upsidedown Man (12) at 30-1 for Kieron Magee with Carlos Lopez is an extreme longshot.

Bigdaddysboy (11) at 30-1 for Robert Gamber with Carol Cedeno is an extreme longshot.

Night Preacher (14) at 30-1 for Kelly Lynn Deiter with Jose Vargas has the worst post in a 14-horse sprint and is a non-factor at those odds.

Betting Strategy

Bushido (1) is the clear play in this race, but at 2-1, the return is limited. The best approach is to use Bushido (1) as the top of exactas with Gaslight Dancer (10), Tough Workout (2), and Noah Chance (8) underneath. A $1 exacta wheel from Bushido (1) over those three horses is the core wager. For those looking for bigger returns, a trifecta with Bushido (1) on top and a wide spread underneath is appropriate. Noble Jon (4) at 8-1 is an intriguing inclusion in the trifecta third position.

Selections

Win: Bushido (1) Place: Gaslight Dancer (10) Show: Tough Workout (2)

RACE 7 — Post (3:04)/2:04/1:04/12:04 — 1760f | D | C | Clm 7500 | BUM | Purse $20,000

A mile and an eighth dirt claimer for $7,500 restricted to fillies and mares. This is the lowest claiming level on today's card, and these races require careful attention to form and connections given the unpredictability of horses at this price tag. Eight horses are entered for this modest purse.

Race 7

Pace Analysis

Eight mares and fillies going 1 1/8 miles on dirt for $7,500. At this level, pace analysis is less precise because horses at this claiming price tend to exhibit inconsistent running styles. The key is finding a horse with any consistent form at or near this class level. Princess Lucia (5) at 2-1 is the morning-line choice, suggesting she may have been competitive at slightly higher claiming levels before dropping to this price.

Key Contenders

Princess Lucia (5) at 2-1 for Hugh McMahon with Yedsit Hazlewood is the morning-line choice and the consensus top selection. McMahon, also represented with Hay Chief (5) in Race 4 and Call Me A Cab (12) in Race 1, is having an active day. Princess Lucia (5) from post 5 in an eight-horse field has a manageable draw. Hazlewood riding for McMahon is a consistent combination at this meet. At 2-1, the price is fairly short for a $7,500 claimer, suggesting the horse has strong form.

Genieinabridle (6) at 4-1 for Daniel McKenzie with Martin Chuan is a horse at 4-1 with post 6. McKenzie also has Watch Your Tone (8) in this race, creating a dual entry scenario. At 4-1, Genieinabridle (6) has legitimate support and a workable post.

Watch Your Tone (8) at 4-1 for Jonathan Maldonado (not McKenzie, per the race card) with Jevian Toledo is notable because Maldonado has been very active today across multiple races. Toledo is among the best jockeys on the card today, and putting him on a 4-1 shot in a $7,500 claimer for mares suggests genuine intent from the barn. Watch Your Tone (8) from post 8 — the outside in an eight-horse field at a route distance — is a concern, but Toledo's ability to find the ideal trip mitigates this.

Secondary Choices

Dubstep (2) at 6-1 for Mary Eppler with Angel Cruz is a secondary choice from post 2. Eppler also runs Ballycurrin (7) in Race 1, and Dubstep (2) at 6-1 is a horse worth including in exotics.

Skip Thru Da Fire (4) at 6-1 for Jose Corrales with Tais Lyapustina is a horse at the same 6-1 morning-line price with a favorable inside draw at post 4. Corrales is a trainer who has shown success at this level.

Longshots

Book Of Wisdom (3) at 8-1 for Kieron Magee with Jose Vargas has post 3 and is a longer-priced option. Magee is active today with multiple horses.

Ginger Girl (1) at 15-1 for Joanne Shankle with Brittany Scampton has the rail and is a deep longshot. Scampton is an apprentice rider, and the combination of a long price and an apprentice jockey makes this difficult to recommend.

Baby Sox (7) at 15-1 for Maldonado with Kevin Gomez is another Maldonado entry in this race alongside Watch Your Tone (8). As with other Maldonado double entries today, the question is which horse represents the primary effort. Toledo on Watch Your Tone (8) versus Gomez on Baby Sox (7) suggests Watch Your Tone (8) is the preferred Maldonado runner here.

Betting Strategy

Princess Lucia (5) is the straightforward win selection, but the 2-1 price limits the upside. The best bet structurally is an exacta of Princess Lucia (5) over Watch Your Tone (8) and Genieinabridle (6). If Princess Lucia (5) fails to hit, an exacta of Watch Your Tone (8) over Genieinabridle (6) as an alternative investment is worth a small ticket. Toledo's presence on Watch Your Tone (8) at 4-1 makes this horse a legitimate each-way selection.

Selections

Win: Princess Lucia (5) Place: Watch Your Tone (8) Show: Genieinabridle (6)

RACE 8 — Post (3:36)/2:36/1:36/12:36 — 1760f | T | C | Clm 20000 | BUM | Purse $29,000

A mile and an eighth turf claimer for $20,000 restricted to fillies and mares, with a $29,000 purse. Eleven horses are entered for this event, which represents the best opportunity for sophisticated handicappers to find value given the moderate claiming level and the turf surface. Jamie Ness again saddles two horses here — Stella Mars (7) and Synergism (8) — creating another trainer double-entry situation.

Race 8

Pace Analysis

Eleven mares going 1 1/8 miles on turf at $20,000. Pace in turf routes at this level for mares tends to be relatively honest, as few horses at this class level have the gate speed to dominate a route. The mid-race pace typically settles, and the horse with the best finishing kick or the best positioning at the top of the stretch has a major advantage. Synergism (8) at 4-1 and Stella Mars (7) at 5-1 from the Ness barn will need to be sorted for jockey assignments. Synergism (8) draws Martin Chuan while Stella Mars (7) gets Hazlewood.

Key Contenders

Don't Tell Deren (10) at 4-1 for John Robb with Xavier Perez is a top selection from multiple handicappers. The name echoes the Don't Tell Kelly (2) in the same race from a different trainer, an interesting coincidence. Robb has placed horses effectively at Laurel, and Don't Tell Deren (10) from post 10 at 4-1 is the consensus morning-line choice among handicappers. Perez is a capable rider who has been productive at this meet.

Synergism (8) at 4-1 for Jamie Ness with Martin Chuan is tied in morning-line odds with Don't Tell Deren (10). Ness with a turf horse at a $20,000 claiming level for mares is a familiar and successful combination at Laurel. Post 8 is workable at this distance.

Getaway Palace (11) at 5-1 for Erin McClellan with Inoel Beato is a horse at 5-1 from the outside post in an 11-horse field. McClellan is a trainer with a good record in similar races, and Getaway Palace (11) deserves respect despite the challenging post position.

Secondary Choices

Princess Javoncia (3) at 5-1 for Elizabeth Merryman with H.A. Karamanos has post 3, an excellent draw in an 11-horse turf field. Merryman is a capable trainer at this level, and Karamanos is an experienced rider. At 5-1 with a favorable inside draw, Princess Javoncia (3) is a legitimate secondary choice.

Stella Mars (7) at 5-1 for Ness with Hazlewood draws post 7, which is also workable. As the Ness pair at closely matched odds, Synergism (8) slightly inside gives it a marginal positional edge.

Longshots

Come To Mama (1) at 8-1 for Sarah White with Jorge Ruiz has the rail from post 1 in an 11-horse turf route for mares. At 8-1, Come To Mama (1) could be live if White has the horse ready. The rail on turf at Laurel in a route can be advantageous.

Bay Street (6) at 8-1 for Damon Dilodovico with Ismerio Villalobos is a mid-range longshot from post 6. Dilodovico is a modest barn at this level.

Atlas Strong (5) at 10-1 for Phil Schoenthal with Angel Cruz has post 5 and is a longer-priced option. Schoenthal also runs Ballinaclash (3) in Race 3.

Classicals Finale (9) at 10-1 for Richard Sillaman with Jose Vargas has post 9. Sillaman also enters Masakado (7) in Race 4.

Don't Tell Kelly (2) at 12-1 for Kenneth Cox with Jeiron Barbosa is a longshot from post 2. The name similarity to Don't Tell Deren (10) is coincidental but worth keeping straight when marking tickets.

Conquest Dancer (4) at 30-1 for Aimee Hall with Raul Mena is an extreme longshot from the only non-Mena assignment among Mena's rides today; this is actually a reasonable draw at post 4 but the odds are difficult to overcome.

Betting Strategy

The Ness double entry is the central strategic question. Use both Synergism (8) and Stella Mars (7) in multi-horse wagers while leaning toward Synergism (8) as the slight choice based on the draw. Don't Tell Deren (10) and Princess Javoncia (3) are the key horses to include from outside the Ness barn. A trifecta with Synergism (8) and Don't Tell Deren (10) as the top two and Princess Javoncia (3), Stella Mars (7), and Come To Mama (1) in the third position offers a solid coverage structure.

Selections

Win: Synergism (8) Place: Don't Tell Deren (10) Show: Princess Javoncia (3)

RACE 9 — Post (4:09)/3:09/2:09/1:09 — 1870f | D | AO | OClm 40000n2x | BUM | Purse $53,000

The featured race on the card — a 1 3/16-mile optional claiming race for fillies and mares that have not won two stakes or have not won since a specified date, at a $40,000 claiming tag with a $53,000 purse. Seven horses are entered for this restricted to females event, which is the most competitive and the highest-purse race on the card today. This race offers the best opportunity for a skilled handicapper to find a meaningful win bet.

Race 9

Pace Analysis

Seven mares going 1 3/16 miles on dirt in the optional claiming format. This is a class test at the $40,000 claiming level, and horses that have been competitive in allowance or stakes company at the mid-Atlantic level will be sorted here. Estocada (6) at 2-1 as the morning-line favorite is typically the sign of a horse with a dominant recent performance or significant class edge. At this distance and class level, pace will be moderate with the race likely decided in the final quarter-mile.

Key Contenders

Estocada (6) at 2-1 for Antonio Machado with Ismerio Villalobos is the morning-line favorite and the consensus top selection for this race. Machado has placed this mare in a spot where she should be competitive, and the 2-1 price reflects strong handicapper confidence. From post 6 in a seven-horse field, Estocada (6) has a workable outside draw that should allow Villalobos to find a comfortable early position. At 1 3/16 miles on dirt, an experienced mare with form at the optional claiming level is a formidable opponent.

The Goddess Factor (3) at 4-1 for Timothy Keefe with Angel Cruz is a co-second choice from an experienced barn. Keefe also runs Too Many Kisses (1) in this race, making this another trainer double-entry scenario. The Goddess Factor (3) at 4-1 from post 3 is the better-placed of the two Keefe entries from a post position standpoint. Cruz getting the call on The Goddess Factor (3) over BOYCE on Too Many Kisses (1) is an interesting choice that may signal stable preference.

Disco Rules (4) at 4-1 for Flint Stites with Mychel Sanchez is tied in the morning line at 4-1. Stites is an active trainer at Laurel, and Sanchez picking up the mount here adds credibility. Post 4 is an excellent draw in a seven-horse field. Disco Rules (4) represents the best value play in this race given the combination of price, post position, and jockey.

Secondary Choices

Shirl's Delight (7) at 4-1 for Edward Allard with Julio Hernandez is a third horse at 4-1 morning line in this race, making four of the seven horses priced between 2-1 and 4-1. Allard is a respected trainer at the mid-Atlantic level, and Hernandez is an experienced hand. Post 7 — the outside in a seven-horse field at a route distance — is a minor negative.

Old Bay (5) at 5-1 for Mark Shuman with Yedsit Hazlewood draws post 5, which is workable. The name “Old Bay” is almost certainly a nod to the famous Maryland seasoning, and at 5-1, this mare could be a local fan favorite as well as a legitimate contender. Shuman is a competent trainer, and Hazlewood has been active throughout today's card.

Longshots

Too Many Kisses (1) at 6-1 for Keefe with Forest Boyce has the rail. At 6-1 in the featured race with the rail draw, Too Many Kisses (1) is the most interesting value play on the card if the horse can find early position. Keefe entering two in the same race at a combined 4-1 and 6-1 means one of these horses could significantly outrun its odds.

Secret Journey (2) at 30-1 for Carl O'Callahan with Sheldon Russell is an extreme longshot in this feature. At 30-1 in a seven-horse field, Secret Journey (2) would represent a massive upset. The odds are too prohibitive to recommend in win wagering, though a small inclusion in superfecta tickets is defensible.

Betting Strategy

The featured race offers the most value opportunities of the day. Disco Rules (4) at 4-1 with Mychel Sanchez from post 4 is the recommended win selection — the combination of post position, jockey quality, and morning-line price suggests this horse may represent the best risk-adjusted bet on the card. Estocada (6) should be included in exactas as the likely favorite. An exacta of Disco Rules (4) over Estocada (6) pays a meaningful return even at the morning-line odds if both hold their prices. A trifecta with Disco Rules (4) and Estocada (6) on top, with Old Bay (5) and The Goddess Factor (3) in the third spot, provides strong coverage.

Selections

Win: Disco Rules (4) Place: Estocada (6) Show: The Goddess Factor (3)

RACE 10 — Post (4:40)/3:40/2:40/1:40 — 1870f | T | M | Md 16000 | BUN | Purse $24,000

The card closes with a 1 3/16-mile maiden $16,000 claimer on the turf for colts and geldings. Fifteen horses are entered in what could be a chaotic finale. At $24,000 purse and $16,000 claiming price for maidens, this is a race requiring patience and willingness to spread in exotic wagering. The large field creates multi-race wagering opportunities for those who have survived the Pick 4 or Pick 5.

Race 10

Pace Analysis

Fifteen maidens going 1 3/16 miles on turf at a $16,000 claiming price. This is as unpredictable as any race on the card. At this distance on turf for maidens, horses that have shown any ability to rate and make a run in the stretch have the best chance. The outside posts (12-15) face severe post position disadvantages at this distance in a large turf field, as horses drawn wide at 1 3/16 miles waste considerable energy early.

Key Contenders

Rock You Babe (4) at 4-1 for Tim Woolley with Mychel Sanchez is one of three horses at 4-1 morning line in this race. Post 4 is an excellent draw in a 15-horse turf field, and Sanchez is aboard his third or fourth mount of the day, maintaining form throughout the card. Woolley is a capable trainer at this level.

Brockton (6) at 4-1 for Keri Brion with Kevin Gomez is also at 4-1 and draws post 6. Brion also enters Rivage (14) in this race, creating another trainer double-entry situation. Brockton (6) has the far better draw of the two Brion entries and is the logical stable preference.

Gordito (9) at 4-1 for Gina Perri with Carol Cedeno draws post 9, which is a mid-range post in a 15-horse turf field. At 4-1, Gordito (9) is one of three horses at that morning-line price. Perri is a trainer who has had success at this claiming level.

Secondary Choices

Oracle Of Beaufort (13) at 5-1 for Brittany Russell with Yedsit Hazlewood is one of two horses at 5-1 morning line. The post position at 13 in a 15-horse turf field is a genuine negative, but Russell — notable as the trainer who just won the Federico Tesio with Taj Mahal on Saturday — is a trainer in excellent current form. Connections within Russell's barn are riding a wave of confidence entering this race, and Oracle Of Beaufort (13) at 5-1 despite the challenging post deserves respect.

DEPUTY A.P. (15) at 5-1 for Kevin Boniface with Taylor Kingsley draws the worst possible post in a 15-horse turf field. Despite the 5-1 morning-line price, the post alone makes this a very difficult wager to recommend in win wagering.

Rebel Prince (11) at 8-1 for Lynn Ashby with Jose Batista is a mid-range price with a mid-range post. At post 11, there are advantages to posts farther inside, but 8-1 in a wide-open field like this is worth a small inclusion.

Quality Bolt (12) at 8-1 for Kathleen Crook-Demasi with Jorge Ruiz is similarly priced and positioned to Rebel Prince (11).

Longshots

Saint Solomon (2) at 10-1 for Kelly Lynn Deiter with Jose Betancourt has post 2, an excellent draw for the longshot category. Deiter also enters Night Preacher (14) in Race 6. A second-place finisher from this barn at a longer price on good post position is worth including in trifecta coverage.

On Secret Service (10) at 12-1 for A. Gordon-Watson with Matilda Burnham draws post 10 and is a mid-range longshot.

Treasure Our Time (1) at 15-1 for Flint Stites with Yomar Ortiz has the rail, post 1, which at 1 3/16 miles on turf could be favorable if the horse finds early position. Stites also runs Disco Rules (4) in Race 9.

Rivage (14) at 4-1 for Keri Brion with Taylor Kingsley is the second Brion entry and despite the 4-1 morning line, post 14 in a 15-horse turf route is a significant obstacle. The price does not adequately reflect the post position disadvantage.

Galatown Guy (5) at 20-1 for Fenneka Bentley with Jean Gregor Briceno is a longshot from a smaller operation.

It A Lee (3) at 20-1 for Kelly Lynn Deiter with Edgar Villasmil gives Deiter a third entry across today's card. Post 3 is a solid draw, but 20-1 in this field suggests limited expectations.

Tug (7) at 20-1 for Pedro Nazario with Paul Luna completes Nazario's multiple entries across the day's card.

Boss Lily (8) at 20-1 for Gregory Wilson with Jose Vargas is a deep longshot.

Betting Strategy

In a 15-horse maiden turf closer with three horses at 4-1 and two at 5-1, the best approach is to spread in exacta and trifecta wagering rather than committing to a single win bet. Rock You Babe (4) and Brockton (6) are the top two selections given their post positions and trainer quality. Oracle Of Beaufort (13) from the red-hot Brittany Russell barn is the best value at 5-1 despite the outside draw. A trifecta wheel with Rock You Babe (4) and Brockton (6) on top and Oracle Of Beaufort (13), Gordito (9), Saint Solomon (2), and Rebel Prince (11) in the third position provides cost-effective coverage. Include Treasure Our Time (1) as a saver given the rail draw at 15-1.

Selections

Win: Rock You Babe (4) Place: Brockton (6) Show: Oracle Of Beaufort (13)

JOCKEY NOTES AND INSIGHTS

Jevian Toledo enters today's card as the meet's leading rider and is positioned on key mounts throughout the card: Frye Island (2) in Race 1, Red Dawn Coming (8) in Race 5, and Watch Your Tone (8) in Race 7. Toledo has been particularly effective in turf routes at this meet, and his presence on Frye Island (2) in the opener is a significant wagering signal. When Toledo takes the mount for Anthony Farrior's barn, the win percentage is notably elevated. Toledo is also known for his ability to handle large fields on turf, making his rides in the 13 and 15-horse fields especially important.

Mychel Sanchez has one of the strongest books of work today, riding for Michael Trombetta in Races 3 and 5, and picking up additional quality mounts in Races 4, 9, and 10. Virginia Gentry (6) in Race 3 and Patrick's Promise (4) in Race 5 are among the most likely winners of the day, making Sanchez the jockey to watch from a multi-race wagering standpoint. His partnership with Trombetta on turf routes is one of the more reliable trainer-jockey combinations at Laurel this meet.

Yedsit Hazlewood has the largest single-day book of any rider today, with mounts in nearly every race on the card. Hazlewood rides Call Me A Cab (12) in Race 1, Ballinaclash (3) in Race 3, Hay Chief (5) in Race 4, and multiple others through Race 10. The volume of rides for Hazlewood suggests growing confidence from stables at the meet. When Hazlewood picks up mounts for multiple trainers on the same card — Schoenthal, McMahon, Ness, Magee — it reflects the rider's versatility and current form.

Raul Mena is active today with Sir George (1) in Race 3, Brighty (5) in Race 5, Conquest Dancer (4) in Race 8, and others. Mena has been a consistent presence at Laurel and handles multiple class levels adeptly. His mount on Sir George (1) for Michael Gorham in Race 3 is one of the day's more intriguing co-favorite situations.

Angel Cruz has a busy book including Dreams Of Rome (2) in Race 3, Flying To Work (5) in Race 2, Dubstep (2) in Race 7, Atlas Strong (5) in Race 8, The Goddess Factor (3) in Race 9, and Masen (13) in Race 6. Cruz is an active and capable jockey who handles turf routes well and has shown an ability to find late runs in large fields.

Martin Chuan rides exclusively for the Ness barn today — Sell It (2) and Party With Smarty (3) in Race 5, and Synergism (8) in Race 8, plus Carnaby (6) in Race 6 and Genieinabridle (6) in Race 7. Chuan's relationship with Ness makes him the key rider to follow when Ness has multiple entries. When Ness splits Chuan and Hazlewood across his entries, the horse that Chuan rides from a favorable post is typically the stable's primary selection.

TRAINER NOTES AND INSIGHTS

Michael Trombetta is the most prominent trainer on today's card from a quality standpoint. With Virginia Gentry (6) in Race 3 and Patrick's Promise (4) in Race 5, Trombetta has legitimate chances in two of the day's more competitive events. Trombetta has one of the best records among Maryland-based trainers in maiden special weight and allowance turf events, and when he saddles Mychel Sanchez, the combination has a win rate well above the meet average. Both horses deserve maximum respect.

Jamie Ness has the most horses entered today across Races 5, 7 (not directly, but adjacent), and 8, with three entries in Race 5 (Sell It (2), Party With Smarty (3), Tavern Time (9)) and two in Race 8 (Stella Mars (7), Synergism (8)). Ness's win percentage with turf horses at routes is among the best at the meet, and when he enters multiple horses, it is often because the barn has identified a race condition that suits several of its horses simultaneously. The key is identifying which Ness horse has the best combination of post position, jockey, and form. In Race 5, Party With Smarty (3) at post 3 with Chuan has the draw edge. In Race 8, Synergism (8) at post 8 with Chuan is the marginal choice.

Anthony Farrior has two significant mounts today: Frye Island (2) in Race 1 and PIT STOP
