OAKLAWN PARK RACE DAY OVERVIEW — SATURDAY, APRIL 25, 2026

Saturday's card at Oaklawn Park represents a significant occasion as the Hot Springs oval wraps up the final weekend of its spring meet before the racing world pivots fully to Churchill Downs for Kentucky Derby week. The 14-race card — excuse the correction, the 11-race program — carries added weight given the presence of the $200,000 Dig a Diamond B Stakes in Race 10, the day's marquee event, along with a deep $125,000 allowance in Race 8 that figures to draw sharp wagering interest. The card opens at 1:45 PM CT with Race 1 and works through to the nightcap in Race 11.

The broader context of Derby week creates some interesting angles throughout the card. Todd Pletcher's Renegade, fresh off a dominant four-length score in the Arkansas Derby, headlines the Kentucky Derby picture from Oaklawn's perspective, though he won't be running today. What we do have is a card stacked with Steven Asmussen entries — a man who knows this track better than virtually anyone alive. Asmussen runs horses in nearly every race on the program, a testament to the depth of his Oaklawn stable at this stage of the meet.

The Dig a Diamond B in Race 10 carries a $200,000 purse over a mile and one-sixteenth on the main track, offering the card's most significant prize and the best opportunity for exotic players looking to build a substantial score. Race 8, the $125,000 allowance for horses that have not won a race other than maiden, claiming, or starter, draws an intriguing field of 10 with Iron Dome (POST 1) and Crushed It (POST 5) sharing favorite billing at 2-1.

The closing weeks of the Oaklawn meet traditionally bring sharper competition as horses are pointed toward Stakes engagements or positioned for spring campaigns at tracks like Churchill Downs, Lone Star Park, and Belmont. Connections that have been biding time through the winter and early spring tend to tighten the screws now, and that pattern makes trainer angles especially important today.

WEATHER AND TRACK CONDITIONS

Saturday's forecast for Hot Springs, Arkansas calls for partly cloudy skies with temperatures in the mid-60s and light winds from the south at approximately 8 to 10 miles per hour. No precipitation is expected through post time or during the card, which means the main track should be rated fast. The Oaklawn strip has been running consistently fast through the closing weeks of the meet, and today's dry conditions ensure no variance from that baseline.

Oaklawn's dirt surface has been playing true at both sprint and route distances, with no significant maintenance interventions reported that would alter surface character. The track has shown its typical late-meet profile: hard and sealed on the cushion with minimal give, which rewards horses with efficient ground-covering strides. Closers have had their moments, but the surface has leaned toward pace-pressing horses that can engage early and sustain through the lane.

TRACK BIAS AND POST POSITION ANALYSIS

Oaklawn's one-turn sprint configuration at six furlongs (1320f) historically gives a modest edge to early speed from inside and middle posts. Horses breaking from Posts 1 through 4 in sprint races can find the rail quickly and save ground into the first turn, which becomes especially relevant in full fields. However, the inside posts can become a liability if a horse draws a wall of speed to the outside and gets squeezed at the break.

In route races at a mile and an eighth (1760f) or longer (1870f), the Oaklawn oval runs two turns, and post position becomes somewhat neutralized by the additional ground. Inside posts maintain a slight edge by virtue of the shorter path, but the first turn comes up quickly enough that horses drawn wide need an early move to avoid losing too much ground.

Through the closing weeks of the meet, the bias has shown a modest lean toward horses that press the pace or sit in stalking position within two lengths of the lead. Extreme front runners have been vulnerable to late-running horses when the pace is honest, while horses parked five or more lengths off a slow pace have been left with too much ground to make up. Speed-on-speed scenarios in sprint races have been producing honest fractions, which has allowed both closers and pace pressers to compete for the winner's share.

Post position in today's full fields — notably Race 7 with 11 runners and Race 11 with 14 — will be a significant factor. In those large-field maiden events, outside posts face a wider journey around two turns, and the inner posts carry a clear geometric advantage. Keep an eye on how early traffic develops in those races.

RACE 1 — Post 1:45 PM CT — 1320f | Dirt | Claiming | Clm 20000n2l | Purse $34,000

Pace Analysis

Seven runners go six furlongs on dirt in a $20,000 claiming field restricted to horses that have not won two lifetime races. The condition “n2l” (non-winners of two lifetime) creates a mixed bag of lightly raced horses looking for their second win. On pace, this figures to be a contest with multiple speed horses. Dark Vector (POST 1) and City Of Angels (POST 4) both project as pace-pressers capable of establishing early position, while Woodspoint (POST 7) has shown tactical flexibility that may allow him to sit just off the pace. The six-furlong distance rewards early position at Oaklawn, and the race shape could favor the horse that gets loose on the front end without a prolonged duel.

Key Contenders

Woodspoint (POST 7) draws the outside post in this seven-horse field and arrives trained by Peter Miller, whose operation carries consistent form. Miller is not primarily based at Oaklawn but when he ships horses to the meet, they tend to be well-prepared. Woodspoint is listed at 3-1 on the morning line, making him the second choice, and the outside draw in a sprint of this nature is not prohibitive given that he likely possesses tactical speed to clear to a comfortable stalking spot. The question will be whether he can sustain his bid around horses with fresher class legs.

City Of Angels (POST 4) is the morning line favorite at 2-1, trained by Abel Ramirez-Rodriguez with Amir Mendoza up. The inside-middle post is ideal in a sprint, and the favorite's price suggests the connections have strong confidence. At $20,000 claiming level, a horse favored this firmly usually has a clear form advantage that the morning line reflects.

Secondary Choices

Dark Vector (POST 1) draws the rail and is trained by Michael Hewitt, who runs a solid Oaklawn operation. Luis Santiago Quinonez has the mount, and the rail post in a sprint can be advantageous if the horse breaks cleanly and finds clear air early. At 4-1, Dark Vector offers value if the pace scenario allows him to get loose.

Tip Toe Joe (POST 5) at 4-1 with Cristian Torres aboard for trainer Matt Williams has the center-field draw and could benefit from a fast early pace if coming from just off the speed. Williams is an active Oaklawn conditioner and knows how to spot his horses appropriately.

Grand Oracle (POST 3) at 5-1 with David Cabrera is a horse worth monitoring. Trainer Chris Hartman is consistent at this level, and Cabrera has been riding aggressively at the meet.

Longshots

French Knight (POST 2) at 12-1 with Luis Fuenmayor for trainer Santiago Tranquilino is a longshot that will need significant improvement from his recent form. Ky Do Declare (POST 6) at 8-1 with Francisco Arrieta for Tony Rengstorf rounds out a field where the top contenders appear well separated from the bottom.

Betting Strategy

The most logical play here is to use City Of Angels (POST 4) and Woodspoint (POST 7) as the top pair and key them in exactas with the 4-1 shots Dark Vector (POST 1) and Tip Toe Joe (POST 5). The race does not offer compelling value at the top, so limiting exotic exposure and focusing on the exacta makes the most sense.

Selections

Win: City Of Angels (POST 4) Place: Woodspoint (POST 7) Show: Dark Vector (POST 1)

RACE 2 — Post 2:19 PM CT — 1210f | Dirt | Maiden | Md 12500 | Purse $30,000

Pace Analysis

Nine maiden claimers go approximately six and a half furlongs on dirt, a tough distance that sorts out runners who can both break alertly and sustain effort. The field is led in the morning line by a pair of 2-1 co-favorites: Air Castle (POST 7) and Reya Sunshine (POST 9). With Erik Asmussen having the call on Max Krackin (POST 5) and Keith Asmussen aboard Reya Sunshine (POST 9) for the powerful Steve Asmussen barn, the trainer angle looms large. Royal B (POST 2) with Cristian Torres adds another live contender. The pace could be contested if Sissy Sox (POST 1) or Royal B fire from the break, creating an honest tempo that might set things up for a closer.

Key Contenders

Reya Sunshine (POST 9) exits the Steven Asmussen barn, which at Oaklawn is perhaps the most important single factor in low-level maiden races. Asmussen's overall win percentage at Oaklawn is consistently elite, and when he sends out a horse favored on the morning line, it demands respect. Keith Asmussen has the mount, and while the outside post at nine is not ideal in a sprint, Asmussen horses from this barn are typically well-drilled and can overcome post position disadvantages with superior talent.

Air Castle (POST 7) at 2-1 with David Cabrera for trainer John Prather is the other co-favorite, and Prather is a steady Oaklawn presence. Post 7 in a nine-horse field is a workable spot, and Cabrera's aggressive riding style could put this horse in a favorable stalking position early.

Secondary Choices

Sissy Sox (POST 1) at 3-1 with Alexander Castillo for Allen Milligan is the rail speed that could make the front and prove stubborn if the pace is unchallenged. Milligan knows the Oaklawn oval well, and if Sissy Sox can get loose early, she becomes dangerous even at this price.

Royal B (POST 2) at 4-1 with Torres for Ernie Witt II pairs trainer Witt's second entry in the race with Max Krackin (POST 5). Witt running two horses suggests genuine confidence in both, and Royal B's post position advantage over the Asmussen horse could prove pivotal if the pace heats up.

Longshots

Max Krackin (POST 5) at 30-1 with Erik Asmussen is listed as a longshot despite the trainer's presence; the morning line suggests this is the “weaker” of the two Asmussen-connected runners. Doris J (POST 6) at 20-1 for Shea Stuart is well back in the market. Korda (POST 3) at 30-1 for F. Dewaine Loy, Beth Please (POST 4) at 30-1 for Terry Brennan, and Surely The One (POST 8) at 15-1 for Melton Wilson are unlikely to threaten the top choices unless the race falls apart.

Betting Strategy

Box the top two choices Reya Sunshine (POST 9) and Air Castle (POST 7) in the exacta and include Sissy Sox (POST 1) as a saver. If Sissy Sox gets loose on the front end, she could upset at 3-1 in a race where the favorites are breaking from middle and outside posts.

Selections

Win: Reya Sunshine (POST 9) Place: Air Castle (POST 7) Show: Sissy Sox (POST 1)

RACE 3 — Post 2:53 PM CT — 1760f | Dirt | Maiden | Md 30000 | Purse $40,000

Pace Analysis

Seven maiden non-winners go a mile and a sixteenth on dirt at the $30,000 level, a significant step up in class from Race 2. The field is loaded with sharp morning line contenders, including a co-favorite situation between Can't Stop Willis (POST 3) at 2-1, Nyquist Frequency (POST 6) at 2-1, Globalist (POST 2) at 4-1, and Private Show (POST 4) at 4-1. The Asmussen stable has two entries: Globalist (POST 2) and Nyquist Frequency (POST 6). At a route distance, the pace shape will be crucial. This figures to be a moderately run contest with multiple closers, and the horse that makes a sustained move around the far turn will have a significant advantage.

Key Contenders

Can't Stop Willis (POST 3) is the co-favorite at 2-1 for trainer Cameron Milligan with Joseph Bealmear in the saddle. The post position is excellent — inside-middle in a seven-horse field at two turns — and a horse that can secure a ground-saving trip and fire in the stretch has a clear profile for the mile-and-sixteenth distance. Milligan has been an active presence at the meet.

Nyquist Frequency (POST 6) at 2-1 for Steven Asmussen with Erik Asmussen aboard is the Asmussen powerhouse's primary entry based on jockey assignment. Named for champion sire Nyquist, this runner's breeding aligns well with a route distance. Erik Asmussen has been one of the meet's more active riders, and the Asmussen barn at Oaklawn in maiden routes is a formidable combination.

Secondary Choices

Globalist (POST 2) at 4-1 for Steven Asmussen with Keith Asmussen is the barn's secondary entry but should not be overlooked. The Post 2 draw is good, and Keith Asmussen is an experienced hand around the Oaklawn oval. If Globalist shows better form, this could easily become a trainer's delight with a 1-2 finish.

Private Show (POST 4) at 4-1 for Kinnon LaRose with Rafael Bejarano in the irons is a horse that deserves attention. Bejarano is one of the meet's premier riders, and LaRose does solid work at this level. The middle post is favorable, and at 4-1, Private Show represents solid each-way value.

Longshots

Major Mack (POST 5) at 10-1 for Donnie Von Hemel with Quinonez could outrun the odds if there's pace to close into. Von Hemel is a capable conditioner at this level. Athletic Like (POST 1) at 12-1 for Coty Rosin with Eduardo Gallardo and Surfin' M (POST 7) at 12-1 for William Martin with Torres are longer shots that would need significant improvement to factor.

Betting Strategy

The two-horse co-favorite battle between Can't Stop Willis (POST 3) and Nyquist Frequency (POST 6) dominates, but the Asmussen double play is intriguing. Use Nyquist Frequency (POST 6) on top with Can't Stop Willis (POST 3) and Private Show (POST 4) underneath in exactas. A small tri-box of posts 3, 4, and 6 is a reasonable exotic play.

Selections

Win: Nyquist Frequency (POST 6) Place: Can't Stop Willis (POST 3) Show: Private Show (POST 4)

RACE 4 — Post 3:25 PM CT — 1320f | Dirt | Claiming | Clm 10000n2l | Purse $31,000

Pace Analysis

Nine horses go six furlongs in a $10,000 claiming field for non-winners of two races — the day's lowest claiming level. The morning line shows a crowded favorite picture with Classically (POST 6), Good News Rocket (POST 7), and Saving Heart (POST 9) all at 2-1. With Asmussen saddling two horses — Classically (POST 6) with Keith Asmussen and Good News Rocket (POST 7) with Erik Asmussen — and Saving Heart (POST 9) at the same price for Matt Williams, this race will require careful sorting. The pace could be lively with multiple runners capable of pressing early.

Key Contenders

Classically (POST 6) for Asmussen with Keith Asmussen is one of the top-three morning line choices, and the Asmussen barn's depth at this level is unmatched. Post 6 in a nine-horse sprint is manageable, and Keith Asmussen's patient style can set horses up for a sustained late kick.

Saving Heart (POST 9) at 2-1 for Matt Williams with Amin Castillo has a wide post in a nine-horse field, which is a legitimate concern in a sprint. Williams is a respected Oaklawn trainer, but the outside post demands a clean break and a move to avoid trouble. At equal odds to the Asmussen horses, the post position makes this the least attractive of the three favorites.

Good News Rocket (POST 7) for Asmussen with Erik Asmussen sits at Post 7, adjacent to Saving Heart (POST 9) and just outside Classically (POST 6). Having two horses from the same barn in neighboring posts creates potential interference scenarios.

Secondary Choices

More Power (POST 4) at 4-1 for Tom Swearingen with Walter De La Cruz is a value play at the heart of the field. The middle post is excellent, Swearingen is a competent conditioner at this level, and De La Cruz has been a dependable presence in the Oaklawn jockey colony. At 4-1 against a crowd of 2-1 horses, More Power could spring an upset.

Getoutyourwallet (POST 5) at 6-1 for Timothy Martin with Alexander Castillo is adjacent to More Power (POST 4) and also sits in a favorable position. Martin runs multiple horses on the card today and knows the oval well.

Longshots

Bo Bo Dough (POST 3) at 15-1 for Michael Hewitt with Bealmear, Yell County (POST 1) at 15-1 for Joe Petalino with Bejarano, Mamoot (POST 2) at 15-1 for Miguel Silva with Emmanuel Esquivel, and Hollywood Icon (POST 8) at 20-1 for Boyd Caster with Mendoza are all well back in the market and face uphill tasks.

Betting Strategy

With three horses sharing the top of the market, the most logical play is to use Classically (POST 6) as a single and play against the outside horses Saving Heart (POST 9) and Good News Rocket (POST 7) in exactas. The more-value play puts More Power (POST 4) on top with the Asmussen pair underneath.

Selections

Win: Classically (POST 6) Place: More Power (POST 4) Show: Good News Rocket (POST 7)

RACE 5 — Post 3:57 PM CT — 1870f | Dirt | Restricted Allowance | Alw 10000s | Purse $40,000

Pace Analysis

Eight horses go a mile and three-sixteenths on dirt in a starter allowance restricted to horses that have started for a claiming price of $10,000 or less. Underdressed (POST 6) is the heavy morning line favorite at 1-1 for Steven Asmussen with Erik Asmussen, and Camp Daddy (POST 7) is the second choice at 2-1 for Tammy Hornsby with Francisco Arrieta. This figures to be a two-horse race unless the odds-on favorite is vulnerable. The long distance rewards horses with stamina, and the pace will likely be modest in the early stages.

Key Contenders

Underdressed (POST 6) at 1-1 for Asmussen with Erik Asmussen is the dominant favorite. At Oaklawn in a starter allowance at this distance, an Asmussen horse sent off at even money carries enormous implied probability. Erik Asmussen will likely position this horse in the sweet spot off the pace and make one sustained move around the far turn. The price makes win betting unattractive, but understanding how this horse runs is essential for exotic plays.

Camp Daddy (POST 7) at 2-1 for Hornsby with Arrieta is the most logical alternative. Arrieta has been one of the meet's busier riders, and Hornsby consistently conditions horses capable of competing at this level. The adjacent post to the favorite creates potential for a head-to-head duel if both horses press for position at the top of the stretch.

Secondary Choices

Parkway (POST 2) at 5-1 for Lane Johnston with Tyler Bacon is worth serious consideration at a price. Johnston is a capable regional trainer, and Bacon is a competent journeyman who can get horses into position early at a route distance. If Underdressed (POST 6) has a bad trip or is off its game, Parkway (POST 2) represents the best value alternative.

Eternally Grateful (POST 4) at 10-1 for Scott Young with David Cabrera is a longer shot with some appeal given Cabrera's consistent riding and Young's ability to spot horses in appropriate spots.

Longshots

Metatron's Muse (POST 1) at 15-1 for Ilkay Kantarmaci with Mendoza, Indian Cat (POST 3) at 12-1 for Tanner Tracy with Vazquez, Tahoe Run (POST 5) at 12-1 for Armando Hernandez with Bejarano, and Magic Grant (POST 8) at 15-1 for Kantarmaci with Jane Elliott are all significant longshots. Hernandez is known for occasionally springing upsets with lower-priced horses, and Bejarano's presence on Tahoe Run (POST 5) gives that horse a slight bump in credibility.

Betting Strategy

At 1-1, Underdressed (POST 6) is not a compelling win bet, but keying him in exactas underneath Camp Daddy (POST 7) and Parkway (POST 2) is a way to profit from an upset while acknowledging the favorite's likely superiority. A small win bet on Camp Daddy (POST 7) at 2-1 offers modest value.

Selections

Win: Underdressed (POST 6) Place: Camp Daddy (POST 7) Show: Parkway (POST 2)

RACE 6 — Post 4:33 PM CT — 1320f | Dirt | Claiming | Clm 25000n2y | Purse $48,000

Pace Analysis

Seven horses go six furlongs in a $25,000 claiming event for non-winners in two years. This is the day's more interesting sprint condition, as the “n2y” restriction means you may be looking at a horse that won a couple of years ago and has been running without success since, or a lightly raced horse that has been on a restricted campaign. The co-favorites are I'm Wide Awake (POST 3) at 2-1 for Abel Ramirez-Rodriguez with Mendoza and Mischievous M (POST 7) at 2-1 for Timothy Martin with Bacon. How's Ur Attitude (POST 5) at 3-1 for Rob Atras with Torres is the main secondary choice.

Key Contenders

I'm Wide Awake (POST 3) at 2-1 for Ramirez-Rodriguez with Mendoza has the third post in a seven-horse sprint, which is a near-ideal spot at Oaklawn. Ramirez-Rodriguez has been a consistent presence at the meet, and Mendoza has been one of the more dependable riders. The inside-middle position gives this horse the ability to secure a ground-saving trip without getting pinned.

Mischievous M (POST 7) at 2-1 for Martin with Bacon draws the outside post in a seven-horse field, which in a sprint is the least favorable spot. That said, Martin is running multiple horses on the card today and is clearly confident. If Mischievous M breaks cleanly and gets over to a tracking position, the outside post becomes less of an issue, but it adds risk.

Secondary Choices

How's Ur Attitude (POST 5) at 3-1 for Rob Atras with Torres has the center-field draw and solid credentials. Atras is a well-regarded trainer, and at 3-1 with Torres in the irons, this horse offers value relative to the co-favorites sharing the same market position.

Shan (POST 6) at 8-1 for Michael Maker with Arrieta is a notable runner. Maker is a high-percentage trainer at any meet he attends, and 8-1 on a Maker horse in a six-horse claiming sprint is always worth a second look. Arrieta rides with purpose, and if Shan fires a big effort, the price is rewarding.

Longshots

Aaron (POST 4) at 10-1 for Johnston with Vazquez, Vale (POST 2) at 15-1 for Loy with De La Cruz, and Sir Exton (POST 1) at 15-1 for Robert Cline with Kelsi Harr are distant options. The rail post is challenging for Sir Exton (POST 1) in a sprint if he lacks early speed, and at 15-1 the risk-reward doesn't align unless there's a specific spot play angle.

Betting Strategy

The best angle here is to isolate against Mischievous M (POST 7) due to the outside post. Play I'm Wide Awake (POST 3) on top with How's Ur Attitude (POST 5) and Shan (POST 6) underneath in exactas. If Shan (POST 6) hits, the payoffs will be significantly more rewarding than a straight exacta involving the two favorites.

Selections

Win: I'm Wide Awake (POST 3) Place: How's Ur Attitude (POST 5) Show: Shan (POST 6)

RACE 7 — Post 5:06 PM CT — 1320f | Dirt | Maiden | Md 12500 | Purse $30,000

Pace Analysis

Eleven runners go six furlongs at the $12,500 maiden claiming level. Large maiden fields at this level can be chaotic, with pace often established by whoever breaks alertly from the gate regardless of tactical design. The morning line shows Go Go Ro Ro (POST 3) and Flat Out Blessed (POST 8) as co-favorites at 2-1, with Humorous Saint (POST 2) at 4-1 and Makeshift's Legacy (POST 6) at 5-1 as principal secondary choices. In an 11-horse maiden sprint, clean trips are critical and post position matters significantly.

Key Contenders

Go Go Ro Ro (POST 3) at 2-1 for Kelly Bainum with Abel Cedillo draws a favorable inside post. Cedillo has been one of the more active and capable riders at the meet, and the inside-to-middle draw gives this horse a clear advantage in terms of ground saved. Bainum is a competent conditioner at this level.

Flat Out Blessed (POST 8) at 2-1 for Tara Le Coombs with Bealmear draws Post 8 in an 11-horse field, which in a sprint at Oaklawn requires a sharp break and hustle to avoid losing ground. Le Coombs is an active trainer at the meet, and Bealmear has the riding experience to handle wide trips. This is the more challengingly drawn co-favorite.

Secondary Choices

Humorous Saint (POST 2) at 4-1 for Ronald Moquett with Rafael Bejarano sits just outside the rail, which is a strong position in a large-field sprint. Moquett is one of Oaklawn's more respected trainers, and Bejarano's presence gives this horse immediate credibility. If there's value anywhere in this race, Humorous Saint (POST 2) at 4-1 is worth strong consideration.

Makeshift's Legacy (POST 6) at 5-1 for Steven Asmussen with Keith Asmussen carries the Asmussen barn stamp in a maiden race. Even at 5-1, the Asmussen label in a maiden sprint at Oaklawn carries weight. Post 6 is workable in an 11-horse field.

Longshots

Bet On Tiz (POST 4) at 12-1 for John Prather with Alexander Castillo, King Nique (POST 5) at 15-1 for Ike Green with Vazquez, Big Country Boy (POST 1) at 15-1 for Tim Dixon with Jane Elliott, Own My Destiny (POST 10) at 15-1 for J. Luis Garcia with Quinonez, Steel Thunder (POST 7) at 30-1 for Fermin Soto with Mendoza, Southfork (POST 9) at 20-1 for Timothy Martin with Fuenmayor, and Bernardi (POST 11) at 20-1 for Martin with Amanda Poston round out the field. The outside posts of Own My Destiny (POST 10), Southfork (POST 9), and Bernardi (POST 11) are severe disadvantages in a sprint.

Betting Strategy

Focus on Humorous Saint (POST 2) as the value play. At 4-1 with the second post and Bejarano aboard, he offers better odds than the co-favorites with comparable or superior trip prospects. Exacta: Humorous Saint (POST 2) over Go Go Ro Ro (POST 3) is the primary play, with a saver using Makeshift's Legacy (POST 6).

Selections

Win: Humorous Saint (POST 2) Place: Go Go Ro Ro (POST 3) Show: Makeshift's Legacy (POST 6)

RACE 8 — Post 5:38 PM CT — 1760f | Dirt | Allowance | Alw 125000n1x | Purse $125,000

Pace Analysis

Ten runners go a mile and a sixteenth in this $125,000 allowance restricted to non-winners of a race other than maiden, claiming, or starter. This is the day's second-richest race and features some of the card's most interesting contenders. Iron Dome (POST 1) for Asmussen with Erik Asmussen and Crushed It (POST 5) for Michael Maker with Arrieta share morning line favoritism at 2-1. Saint Gabriel (POST 9) is the third choice at 4-1. The route distance at this level rewards horses with both pace versatility and genuine class.

Key Contenders

Iron Dome (POST 1) at 2-1 for Asmussen with Erik Asmussen breaks from the rail in a 10-horse route. The inside post at two turns at Oaklawn is advantageous if the horse can get a clean break and secure rail position without getting pinned behind slow horses. Asmussen at this level in a featured allowance is always formidable, and Iron Dome carries the barn's top jockey assignment.

Crushed It (POST 5) at 2-1 for Michael Maker with Arrieta has a near-perfect post in a 10-horse field. Maker is widely respected as a trainer with a high win percentage from his allowance horses, and the center-field draw gives Arrieta maximum options for positioning. This is arguably the most dangerous horse in the race when considering the trainer-post-jockey combination.

Secondary Choices

Saint Gabriel (POST 9) at 4-1 for Brett Brinkman with Torres is a live closer from a wide post. Torres has been one of the meet's busier and more successful riders, and in a 10-horse route with a potentially honest pace, the wide post is manageable if the horse has enough pace to engage from the outside. At 4-1, Saint Gabriel (POST 9) offers meaningful exacta value.

Turn Up The Trees (POST 8) at 8-1 for David Jacobson with Vazquez is a trainer-jockey combination that consistently delivers value at above-average odds. Jacobson conditions horses with careful planning, and 8-1 on a route horse that can sit off the pace and close is a price worth exploring in exotics.

Longshots

Dance Some Mo (POST 7) at 12-1 for Thomas Van Berg with Bejarano, Fast Jack (POST 3) at 12-1 for Scott Becker with Cedillo, Mena (POST 4) at 12-1 for Ronald Moquett with Keith Asmussen, Magical Wish (POST 6) at 20-1 for Cipriano Contreras with Esquivel, Title Contender (POST 2) at 30-1 for Gene Jacquot with Bealmear, and Texas Cyclone (POST 10) at 30-1 for John Haran with Mendoza are long prices unlikely to threaten unless the race falls apart. Mena (POST 4) with the Moquett-Asmussen combination is the most interesting longshot angle, as Moquett regularly puts horses into favorable positions in allowance company.

Betting Strategy

This race sets up as a classic Maker-versus-Asmussen battle. The best value play is to use Crushed It (POST 5) as the primary win selection given the superior post, with Iron Dome (POST 1) underneath in exactas. Saint Gabriel (POST 9) at 4-1 is a legitimate third wheel for tri-keys. A trifecta with 5 on top, 1 underneath, and 9 in third offers a substantial potential payout.

Selections

Win: Crushed It (POST 5) Place: Iron Dome (POST 1) Show: Saint Gabriel (POST 9)

RACE 9 — Post 6:10 PM CT — 1760f | Dirt | Restricted Allowance | Alw 50000s | Purse $70,000

Pace Analysis

Nine horses go a mile and a sixteenth in a $50,000 starter allowance. This is an important race, and the morning line identifies Cooke Creek (POST 2) as the 2-1 favorite for Michael Maker with Vazquez, Oscar Eclipse (POST 6) at 3-1 for Chris Hartman with Cabrera, and Keen Cat (POST 9) at 4-1 for Randy Morse with Arrieta as the primary choices. The layout suggests a race with moderate early pace and a significant stretch run.

Key Contenders

Cooke Creek (POST 2) at 2-1 for Michael Maker with Vazquez has everything going for it from a structural standpoint: a top trainer, an experienced rider, a favorable post position, and the market's confidence. Maker with Vazquez at Oaklawn is a combination worth following throughout the meet, and in a starter allowance at this purse level, their horses are typically well-prepared. Post 2 in a nine-horse mile-and-sixteenth is excellent.

Oscar Eclipse (POST 6) at 3-1 for Chris Hartman with Cabrera is the race's best value play. Hartman is a consistent Oaklawn trainer who positions horses effectively, and Cabrera's recent form at the meet has been solid. Post 6 in a nine-horse field is manageable at two turns, and the 3-1 price against the 2-1 favorite offers meaningful value in exactas.

Secondary Choices

Keen Cat (POST 9) at 4-1 for Randy Morse with Arrieta draws the outside post in a nine-horse field, which at a route distance requires early positioning or accepting a wide trip. Arrieta is capable of working wide in route races, and Morse has the experience to prepare a horse for exactly this type of scenario. At 4-1, Keen Cat (POST 9) is a legitimate threat and rounds out a competitive top-three selection.

Happy Strike (POST 5) at 6-1 for F. Dewaine Loy with De La Cruz offers mid-field position with a competent jockey. Loy has been active at Oaklawn, and De La Cruz is a capable handler of stretch-running horses.

Longshots

Fort Sam (POST 7) at 8-1 for David Fawkes with Torres, Winters Lion (POST 8) at 10-1 for Aaron Shorter with Mendoza, B Sudd (POST 1) at 15-1 for Donnie Von Hemel with Cedillo, Notary (POST 4) at 15-1 for Armando Hernandez with Esquivel, and Protonic Power (POST 3) at 20-1 for Hernandez with Bejarano are the bottom of the market. Hernandez running two longshots suggests these are horses looking for a spot rather than prime win contenders. Torres on Fort Sam (POST 7) at 8-1 is the most interesting of the group and could outrun the odds if the pace is honest.

Betting Strategy

Cooke Creek (POST 2) is a strong win selection but at 2-1 demands exacta action to maximize value. Key Cooke Creek (POST 2) over Oscar Eclipse (POST 6), Keen Cat (POST 9), and Happy Strike (POST 5) in exactas. A trifecta box of 2, 6, and 9 at modest investment is a reasonable structure.

Selections

Win: Cooke Creek (POST 2) Place: Oscar Eclipse (POST 6) Show: Keen Cat (POST 9)

RACE 10 — Post 6:46 PM CT — 1760f | Dirt | Stakes | Dig a Diamond B Stakes $200,000 | Purse $200,000

Pace Analysis

The day's marquee event sends seven fillies and mares going a mile and a sixteenth on dirt in the $200,000 Dig a Diamond B Stakes. The field is headed by two co-favorites at 2-1: Standoutsensation (POST 1) for Kinnon LaRose with Bejarano and Runamileinmyshoes (POST 7) for Peter Miller with Vazquez. Pronghorn (POST 5) at 3-1 for Steven Asmussen with Erik Asmussen is the third choice. This is a small but quality field, and the pace will likely be set by Standoutsensation (POST 1) from the inside, with closers looking to exploit any mid-race softening.

Key Contenders

Standoutsensation (POST 1) at 2-1 for LaRose with Bejarano draws the rail in a seven-horse stakes field. If this filly has front-running tendencies, the inside post is ideal for controlling pace and saving ground throughout. Bejarano is one of the meet's premier big-race riders, and LaRose conditions horses that are typically fit for stakes appearances when entered. The question is whether the pace is honest enough to set up closers.

Runamileinmyshoes (POST 7) at 2-1 for Peter Miller with Vazquez is the widest post in a seven-horse field at a route distance. Miller ships horses to Oaklawn when they are legitimately prepared, and the outside draw requires Vazquez to work wider or accept a stalking position outside other horses around the first turn. Miller horses from non-Oaklawn stables that receive morning line favoritism in stakes races should be taken seriously.

Pronghorn (POST 5) at 3-1 for Asmussen with Erik Asmussen is the middle horse in terms of post position with the Asmussen barn's top entry in the day's richest race. Asmussen at 3-1 in a stakes on his home oval is exactly the kind of play that has rewarded Oaklawn bettors throughout the meet. Erik Asmussen will position this horse to fire in the stretch, and if the pace is honest from Standoutsensation (POST 1), Pronghorn (POST 5) could sweep past late.

Secondary Choices

Ultimate Authority (POST 4) at 5-1 for Saffie Joseph Jr. with Arrieta is a horse trained by one of North America's most aggressive young trainers. Joseph Jr. consistently delivers horses in top condition, and 5-1 in a seven-horse field against top opposition represents value. Arrieta is comfortable in stakes environments.

Mad About Marie (POST 2) at 8-1 for Ike Green with Torres is a longer shot worth including in exotic coverage. Torres rides with tactical intelligence in route races, and if the early pace is contested, Mad About Marie (POST 2) could benefit from a fast early tempo.

Longshots

Queen's Martini (POST 3) at 10-1 for Ronald Moquett with Cabrera and Bundle (POST 6) at 15-1 for Asmussen with Keith Asmussen are the longshots. Bundle is the Asmussen barn's secondary entry and is listed at a price that suggests this is the trainer's lesser hope for the race, though any Asmussen horse merits inclusion in triactor coverage.

Betting Strategy

The Dig a Diamond B is the card's most critical exotic race. Use Pronghorn (POST 5) as the primary win play — the Asmussen angle at 3-1 on a competitive field is the best overlay on the board. Key Pronghorn (POST 5) over Standoutsensation (POST 1), Runamileinmyshoes (POST 7), and Ultimate Authority (POST 4) in exactas. A trifecta with 5 on top, 1 and 7 second, and 4 third provides solid coverage at a reasonable cost.

Selections

Win: Pronghorn (POST 5) Place: Standoutsensation (POST 1) Show: Runamileinmyshoes (POST 7)

RACE 11 — Post 7:20 PM CT — 1870f | Dirt | Claiming | Clm 12500b | Purse $32,000

Pace Analysis

The 14-horse nightcap goes a mile and three-sixteenths at the $12,500 claiming level, a marathon distance for this class. Large fields at long distances create chaotic early scenarios and increase the value of horses with stamina and an ability to settle early. Bolt At Midnight (POST 8) is the morning line favorite at 2-1 for Edgar Espinoza with Torres. Bettera (POST 2) at 4-1 for Peter Miller with Assael Espinoza and Big Paper (POST 5) at 4-1 for Thomas Van Berg with Mendoza are the co-secondary choices. Hoodlum (POST 4) at 6-1 and Gasoline (POST 12) at 6-1 round out the top tier.

Key Contenders

Bolt At Midnight (POST 8) at 2-1 for Edgar Espinoza with Torres draws Post 8 in a 14-horse field at a distance beyond a mile at Oaklawn. Torres is an excellent choice for a longer-distance race where positioning and rhythm matter, and Espinoza appears confident with the favorite's assignment. The inside-middle post in such a large field is workable in a route.

Bettera (POST 2) at 4-1 for Peter Miller with Assael Espinoza is a strong play on several levels. Miller sends out a well-regarded horse — identical odds to Big Paper (POST 5) — from the second post, which at a mile and three-sixteenths in a 14-horse field is an enormous geographic advantage. The inside draw means this horse can save tremendous ground through two turns, and at 4-1, the value is compelling.

Secondary Choices

Big Paper (POST 5) at 4-1 for Van Berg with Mendoza sits in the heart of the field with a manageable post. Van Berg has a long and distinguished training career, and Mendoza's presence on a Van Berg horse in a route is always worth respect. The center field position gives Mendoza options in a large field.

Hoodlum (POST 4) at 6-1 for Norm Casse with Vazquez is an intriguing contender. Norm Casse is the son of Hall of Famer Mark Casse, and the family's training acumen is well-established. Post 4 in a 14-horse field at two turns is favorable, and Vazquez on a Casse horse at 6-1 deserves serious consideration.

Gasoline (POST 12) at 6-1 for Scott Young with Cabrera draws a wide post in a 14-horse field, which at a long distance demands that this horse break alertly and get over to save ground. The 6-1 price at the outside post in a large field represents the highest risk among the top choices.

Longshots

Mowins (POST 9) at 10-1 for Michael Lauer with Bejarano is the most interesting longshot. Bejarano on any horse at any price at Oaklawn is worth a second look, and 10-1 on a Bejarano mount in a large field is a legitimate exotic play. Ringside (POST 7) at 15-1 for Danny Pish with Erik Asmussen carries the Asmussen jockey without the Asmussen trainer, which is an unusual configuration. Global Empire (POST 14) at 15-1 for John Haran with De La Cruz draws the widest post in the entire race and faces a nearly impossible task in a route. Jacks Spring Break (POST 10) at 20-1 for Allen Milligan with Alexander Castillo, Tiz Wicked Strong (POST 11) at 20-1 for Todd Jordan with Bealmear, Dinner At Crumpies (POST 6) at 30-1 for Tammy Hornsby with De La Cruz, Reveille Valley (POST 1) at 30-1 for Burl McBride with Amanda Poston, Flying Martini (POST 3) at 30-1 for Coty Rosin with Gallardo, and Critical Threat (POST 13) at 30-1 for Eleuterio Altamirano with Fuenmayor are all well outside the main consideration for win and place.

Betting Strategy

Bettera (POST 2) is the value play in this race. At 4-1 from the second post with Peter Miller training, the geographic advantage in a 14-horse route should not be underestimated. Key Bettera (POST 2) over Bolt At Midnight (POST 8), Big Paper (POST 5), and Hoodlum (POST 4) in exactas. A trifecta ticket of Bettera (POST 2) on top with the above three underneath is reasonable at this price.

Selections

Win: Bettera (POST 2) Place: Bolt At Midnight (POST 8) Show: Big Paper (POST 5)

JOCKEY NOTES AND INSIGHTS

Rafael Bejarano has been one of the most consistently effective riders at the Oaklawn spring meet. He carries mounts in multiple races on this card and has shown an ability to position horses advantageously in both sprints and routes. Bejarano's trip intelligence, particularly in large fields, makes him a rider worth following. He is aboard Humorous Saint (POST 2) in Race 7, Private Show (POST 4) in Race 3, Yell County (POST 1) in Race 4, Standoutsensation (POST 1) in Race 10, Tahoe Run (POST 5) in Race 5, and Mowins (POST 9) in Race 11. His mounts in Races 7 and 10 are particularly compelling from a value standpoint.

Cristian Torres continues to be one of the card's most active riders. He has mounts throughout the card including Tip Toe Joe (POST 5) in Race 1, Royal B (POST 2) in Race 2, How's Ur Attitude (POST 5) in Race 6, Surfin' M (POST 7) in Race 3, Bolt At Midnight (POST 8) in Race 11, Mad About Marie (POST 2) in Race 10, and Saint Gabriel (POST 9) in Race 8. Torres has developed a strong working relationship with several Oaklawn stables, and his ability to conserve horses in route races stands out.

Erik Asmussen, serving as a jockey in his own right at Oaklawn, pilots the Asmussen barn's primary entries in most races today. His mounts include Iron Dome (POST 1) in Race 8, Nyquist Frequency (POST 6) in Race 3, Underdressed (POST 6) in Race 5, Pronghorn (POST 5) in Race 10, Good News Rocket (POST 7) in Race 4, Max Krackin (POST 5) in Race 2, and Ringside (POST 7) in Race 11. As the stable's lead rider, his assignments are a reliable signal of which Asmussen horses the barn considers its top chances.

Keith Asmussen, the elder Asmussen son, rides the barn's secondary entries. His mounts include Reya Sunshine (POST 9) in Race 2, Globalist (POST 2) in Race 3, Classically (POST 6) in Race 4, Makeshift's Legacy (POST 6) in Race 7, Mena (POST 4) in Race 8, Bundle (POST 6) in Race 10, and Iron Dome-companion entries throughout. In Race 2, Keith has what may be the barn's top assignment with Reya Sunshine (POST 9) at 2-1, which is an important distinction.

Francisco Arrieta has been a consistent performer at the Oaklawn spring meet, riding with aggression and intelligence. He is aboard Crushed It (POST 5) in Race 8, Shan (POST 6) in Race 6, Camp Daddy (POST 7) in Race 5, Keen Cat (POST 9) in Race 9, Ultimate Authority (POST 4) in Race 10, and Ky Do Declare (POST 6) in Race 1. The Crushed It (POST 5) assignment in Race 8 is his most significant of the day.

David Cabrera has delivered strong performances throughout the meet and carries important mounts today, including Grand Oracle (POST 3) in Race 1, Air Castle (POST 7) in Race 2, Oscar Eclipse (POST 6) in Race 9, Eternally Grateful (POST 4) in Race 5, and Queen's Martini (POST 3) in Race 10. His willingness to engage aggressively in sprints makes him effective on pace-pressing types.

Amir Mendoza is one of the card's busiest riders with mounts in almost every race. He pilots City Of Angels (POST 4) in Race 1, Doris J (POST 6) in Race 2, I'm Wide Awake (POST 3) in Race 6, Metatron's Muse (POST 1) in Race 5, Big Paper (POST 5) in Race 11, and others. His assignment of City Of Angels (POST 4) as the morning line favorite in Race 1 is his most significant win opportunity of the early card.

TRAINER NOTES AND INSIGHTS

Steven Asmussen dominates today's card with entries in virtually every race. Running two or more horses in the same race in Races 2, 3, 4, 8, and 10 reflects the depth of his operation at the end of the Oaklawn meet. Asmussen's win percentage at Oaklawn over his career represents one of the most remarkable statistical achievements in North American racing. His most important entries today are Iron Dome (POST 1) in Race 8, Underdressed (POST 6) in Race 5, Pronghorn (POST 5) in Race 10, and Nyquist Frequency (POST 6) in Race 3.

Michael Maker is represented by Crushed It (POST 5) in Race 8, Cooke Creek (POST 2) in Race 9, and Shan (POST 6) in Race 6. Maker is a high-percentage trainer at any major oval, and his horses in today's allowance and stakes races represent some of the card's best bets. His combination with Francisco Arrieta on Crushed It (POST 5) and Vazquez on Cooke Creek (POST 2) suggests these are horses he has positioned carefully.

Peter Miller sends horses from outside the Oaklawn base for Woodspoint (POST 7) in Race 1, Runamileinmyshoes (POST 7) in Race 10, and Bettera (POST 2) in Race 11. Miller-trained shippers to regional meets have a strong record of being well-prepared, and all three of his horses today carry morning line prices that suggest market respect.

Ronald Moquett is an established Oaklawn presence with Humorous Saint (POST 2) in Race 7, Dance Some Mo (POST 7) in Race 8, Mena (POST 4) in Race 8, and Queen's Martini (POST 3) in Race 10. Moquett with Bejarano on Humorous Saint (POST 2) in the large-field maiden is the most appealing of his day's assignments.

Timothy Martin runs multiple horses today including Getoutyourwallet (POST 5) in Race 4, Mischievous M (POST 7) in Race 6, Southfork (POST 9) in Race 7, and Bernardi (POST 11) in Race 7. Martin's activity level suggests a stable running at full capacity at meet's end, and Mischievous M (POST 7) is the barn's most significant opportunity with the co-favorite position in Race 6.

Thomas Van Berg brings Big Paper (POST 5) in Race 11 and Dance Some Mo (POST 7) in Race 8. The veteran conditioner's horses are worth respecting, particularly Big Paper (POST 5) in the nightcap at a price that rewards inclusion in exacta structures.

Tammy Hornsby saddles Camp Daddy (POST 7) in Race 5 and Dinner At Crumpies (POST 6) in Race 11. Camp Daddy (POST 7) is the day's most important Hornsby entry, and the 2-1 morning line reflects the stable's confidence in a prominent starter allowance spot.

BEST WAGERING STRATEGIES AND VALUE PLAYS

The card's most compelling value plays and exotic structures for Saturday's Oaklawn program are concentrated in the middle and late portions of the card, where the allowance and stakes races offer the most meaningful prices.

The Race 8-9-10 sequence represents the strongest exotic opportunity on the program. These three races — a $125,000 allowance, a $70,000 starter allowance, and the $200,000 Dig a Diamond B Stakes — create a natural trifecta sequence for horseplayers. If your track offers a Pick 3 covering Races 8 through 10, the following structure provides excellent coverage: Crushed It (POST 5) and Iron Dome (POST 1) in Race 8, Cooke Creek (POST 2) and Oscar Eclipse (POST 6) in Race 9, Pronghorn (POST 5) and Standoutsensation (POST 1) in Race 10. A two-by-two-by-two combination costs eight units and can return substantial payoffs if even one of the middle legs hits at a price.

For Pick 4 players covering Races 8 through 11, add Bettera (POST 2) as the primary and Bolt At Midnight (POST 8) as the saver in Race 11. The four-race sequence of Crushed It (POST 5)/Iron Dome (POST 1) — Cooke Creek (POST 2)/Oscar Eclipse (POST 6) — Pronghorn (POST 5)/Standoutsensation (POST 1) — Bettera (POST 2)/Bolt At Midnight (POST 8) creates a 16-combination ticket that provides outstanding coverage of the card's most important races.

The single best win play on the card is Pronghorn (POST 5) in Race 10. At 3-1 in a seven-horse stakes field with Asmussen training and Erik Asmussen riding, the horse represents the best overlay relative to the morning line. The Asmussen barn's commitment of its top jockey to this entry signals genuine confidence. Bet Pronghorn (POST 5) to win and use it as an anchor in all late-card exotics.

The best value-oriented win bet is Humorous Saint (POST 2) in Race 7. At 4-1 with Bejarano aboard from Post 2 in an 11-horse maiden sprint, the horse has a better post than the co-favorites and a premier rider. If the 2-1 horses are underlays, Humorous Saint (POST 2) at 4-1 is an overlay and the most compelling single win play among the mid-card offerings.

In Race 10, an exacta box of Pronghorn (POST 5), Standoutsensation (POST 1), and Runamileinmyshoes (POST 7) for six combinations covers the top three morning line choices and is recommended at a moderate investment. Adding Ultimate Authority (POST 4) to make a four-horse exacta box of 12 combinations is also defensible given Saffie Joseph Jr.'s strong trainer record.

For the Race 8 exacta, use Crushed It (POST 5) on top of Iron Dome (POST 1), Saint Gabriel (POST 9), and Turn Up The Trees (POST 8) for a three-combination ticket that pays well if either of the longer-priced horses runs second.

The early Pick 5 — if offered from Race 1 or Race 2 through Race 6 — should be constructed around the following single-race selections: Race 2: Reya Sunshine (POST 9) and Air Castle (POST 7), Race 3: Nyquist Frequency (POST 6) and Can't Stop Willis (POST 3), Race 4: Classically (POST 6) and More Power (POST 4), Race 5: Underdressed (POST 6), Race 6: I'm Wide Awake (POST 3) and How's Ur Attitude (POST 5). Using Underdressed (POST 6) as a single in Race 5 at 1-1 dramatically reduces ticket cost and allows spreading in the surrounding races.
