Race Day Overview — Churchill Downs, Sunday, April 26, 2026

Derby Week has officially arrived at Churchill Downs, and the backside energy is palpable as the racing world's attention descends on Louisville for the 152nd Kentucky Derby one week from today. Saturday's Opening Day card saw Jose Ortiz sweep the first three races, immediately establishing himself as the meet's dominant rider. The post position draw for the 152nd Kentucky Derby was held Saturday between races, confirming Renegade as the 4-1 morning-line favorite despite drawing the dreaded rail — Post 1 — a storyline that will dominate discussion throughout Derby Week.

The late scratch of Chip Honcho from the Derby field, following trainer Steve Asmussen's concerns after a five-furlong work in 1:00 4/5 that apparently didn't satisfy, opened the door for Bob Baffert's Litmus Test to draw into the field. That development reshapes the Derby market heading into the week. Brad Cox's three-pronged attack — Commandment, Fulleffort, and Further Ado — all worked impressively Saturday morning per TDN, keeping Team Cox firmly in the conversation at 6-1 for both Commandment and Further Ado on the morning line.

Sunday's 11-race card at Churchill Downs runs from 12:45 PM ET through the evening and features a rich mix of allowance company, maiden events, a pair of turf races, and the centerpiece Race 9 allowance on the lawn worth $127,000. The card carries total purse money exceeding $900,000 and provides an ideal warm-up betting menu heading into the most wagered week of the year. Key barn activity Saturday included early workers from Team Cox's Derby trio, and the Churchill Downs training track has been busy with Derby participants logging final preparations.

Weather and Track Conditions

Churchill Downs is forecast to see partly cloudy skies on Sunday, April 26, with temperatures in the mid-to-upper 60s Fahrenheit at post time for the early races, warming slightly through the afternoon. No significant precipitation is expected for the race day, which bodes well for a fast main track throughout the card. The turf course, which hosts Races 6 and 9, should be in good shape following a dry Saturday and is expected to be rated firm to good. Track superintendent crews have been active all week maintaining both surfaces ahead of Derby Week, and the inner turf is likely to remain sealed unless any morning moisture necessitates a change.

The main track opened fast on Saturday's Opening Day card and should carry similar speed-favoring conditions into Sunday.

Track Bias and Post Position Analysis

Churchill Downs' one-mile oval has historically favored horses that can secure a position near the pace from the inside posts in routes, while in sprints the track can play fair from top to bottom when dry and fast. At 1 1/16 miles (1870 feet) on dirt, inside posts gain an immediate advantage on the run to the first turn. At six furlongs (1210 feet) on turf, the outside posts are less of a disadvantage given the chute start, and horses with tactical speed rate favorably.

Saturday's Opening Day data showed early pace horses holding well, and Jose Ortiz's three-win sweep came with horses that secured good early position. This suggests the main track is playing at least somewhat favorably for horses that can press or stalk from inside-to-middle posts. The turf course historically plays fair at Churchill Downs during Derby Week with good to firm ground, and closers get more opportunity on grass, though horses that can run in the 1-2 position off a contested pace have the edge.

Post position biases to watch: In the two route races on dirt (Races 1 and 9 — wait, Race 9 is on turf), Race 1 at 1 1/16 miles on dirt favors the inside posts, particularly Posts 1 through 4. In the maiden routes on dirt (Race 3 at nine furlongs, Race 8 at 1 3/8 miles), inside posts will again hold a slight advantage going around two turns. Sprint races (Races 2, 5, 7) out of the chute allow outside posts to overcome at six furlongs but require more ground-saving to contend at the top of the stretch. The two turf races (Race 6 at 7.5 furlongs, Race 9 at 1 1/16 miles) favor tactical horses that can save ground early, with the rail proving particularly advantageous if the turf is firm.

RACE 1 — Post (12:45)/11:45/10:45/9:45 — 1870f | D | R | Alw 50000s | BUN | Purse $83,000

This is a one-turn 1 1/16-mile allowance for horses that have not won two races, run on dirt. Seven older males will go postward for a solid $83,000 purse to open the Sunday card. The distance and surface favor horses with class, tactical speed, and the ability to run two turns — though at Churchill Downs, 1 1/16 miles is effectively a one-turn race from the starting chute. This opens the card with legitimate quality, featuring several prominent connections including Hall of Famer Todd Pletcher's barn mate Nogradi (POST 5) and Saffie Joseph Jr.'s Cant Stop Munnings (POST 6).

Race 1

Pace Analysis

The early pace scenario here is somewhat unclear, but there are horses who will want to push forward. Cant Stop Munnings (POST 6) has shown early speed in previous efforts and will likely be sent to the front or near it from Gaffalione. Nogradi (POST 5) under Jose Ortiz is capable of stalking and coming home strongly. Six String Prince (POST 7) from the Moquett barn often finds a position near the pace. If CANT STOP MUNNINGS controls things from the outside position, the fractions should be moderate, setting up for a pace-presser or closer to swoop. A contested pace benefits Nogradi (POST 5). C Mcgriff (POST 1) and Bourbon Flight (POST 2) could add pressure if sent aggressively from inside posts.

Key Contenders

Nogradi (POST 5) is the 2-1 morning-line favorite and the most logical choice in this spot. Trained by Keri Brion, who is sharp on the Churchill Downs circuit, and ridden by Jose Ortiz — who was absolutely on fire Saturday going 3-for-3 on Opening Day — Nogradi (POST 5) gets the plum post position from the middle of the gate. Ortiz demonstrated Saturday that he has an excellent feel for Churchill Downs right now, and pairing him with a live Brion trainee at a fair price is a strong angle. Nogradi (POST 5) figures to stalk and kick in a one-turn route scenario. The 2-1 price is fair for a horse of this profile on Derby Week's second day with the meet's hottest rider aboard.

Cant Stop Munnings (POST 6) at 4-1 under Tyler Gaffalione is the other key contender worth prioritizing. Saffie Joseph Jr. has been one of the leading trainers in the country this year and is highly effective at getting horses ready to fire fresh or off layoffs in sprint-to-route stretches. Cant Stop Munnings (POST 6) carries the speed horse profile that can control this field, and if the pace is soft enough, Gaffalione is capable of stealing this on the front end. The Munnings influence suggests a powerful, early-running type that can sustain through 1 1/16 miles on a Churchill Downs fast track.

Secondary Choices

Different Gravy (POST 3) at 4-1 from Eddie Kenneally's barn draws the inside posts and offers tactical versatility. Kenneally is a competent trainer at Churchill Downs and Ben Curtis, who has been effective at this meet, will have a good view of how the pace develops from Post 3. At equal odds to Cant Stop Munnings (POST 6), Different Gravy (POST 3) deserves respect if showing any pace figures that match up with the top two.

Bourbon Flight (POST 2) at 5-1 with Irad Ortiz Jr. aboard from the Ian Wilkes barn is a name worth noting. Wilkes trains an incredibly high percentage at Churchill Downs and knows this track as well as any trainer in the country. Irad Ortiz Jr. rarely goes to the post without a live chance, and Bourbon Flight (POST 2) from Post 2 on the inside of a one-turn route is tactically well-placed. At 5-1, this horse represents fair value as a secondary play or exacta piece.

C Mcgriff (POST 1) at 6-1 from Robert Medina's barn with Joel Rosario is another that handicappers are watching. Rosario is a Hall of Famer who will be competitive all week, and the rail post at 1 1/16 miles is a good tactical position. The Medina connection is less of a Churchill Downs powerhouse but Rosario can overcome that gap.

Longshots

Six String Prince (POST 7) at 8-1 has Luis Saez in the irons and Ronald Moquett training. Moquett sends out live horses periodically at major meets, and Saez is a gifted rider. However, the outside post in a field where inside speed is favored makes this a tougher ask, and 8-1 is not generous enough to justify heavy investment. Midway Munny (POST 4) at 10-1 from Paulo Lobo's barn with Alberto Burgos gets almost no support from this corner.

Selections

Win: Nogradi (POST 5) Place: Cant Stop Munnings (POST 6) Show: Bourbon Flight (POST 2)

RACE 2 — Post (1:14)/12:14/11:14/10:14 — 990f | D | S | Md Sp Wt | AOF | Purse $92,000

The first maiden special weight of the day goes at six furlongs on dirt for fillies and mares. Eleven fillies go postward for a solid $92,000 purse. This is a high-quality maiden sprint with several prominent stables represented, and the morning line is tight at the top with four horses between 3-1 and 5-1. The Asmussen barn sends Cardio Cat (POST 7) as the 3-1 morning line choice.

Race 2

Pace Analysis

Eleven fillies at six furlongs will produce a lively pace scenario. Go New York Go (POST 5) under Luis Saez looks like an early speed type from a Chad Summers barn that likes to get horses to the front. Cardio Cat (POST 7) and She's Toasty (POST 8) may be stalkers who prefer to sit just off a contested pace and pounce. If multiple horses press Go New York Go (POST 5) early, the pace collapses back to the closers, which would benefit Valkyrie (POST 6) under Declan Cannon or Lady Lux (POST 9) from the outside. A single pace setter with a soft lead could wire this field. Pace is the dominant betting angle here.

Key Contenders

Cardio Cat (POST 7) at 3-1 is trained by Steve Asmussen and gets Irad Ortiz Jr. in the irons. This is one of the most powerful combinations in American racing right now. Asmussen's maiden sprint percentage at major tracks is excellent, and Irad Ortiz Jr. has the rare ability to both put horses in the perfect striking position and finish off a stretch battle. From Post 7, Cardio Cat (POST 7) has a clean outside trip, can sit in a two-path stalking position, and should be at the peak of her form in this Asmussen debut scenario or return. The 3-1 price will likely compress at the windows but represents fair morning-line value for the combination.

She's Toasty (POST 8) at 4-1 under Ben Curtis for Eddie Kenneally gets attention as a likely top choice among handicappers. Kenneally is a consistent trainer who gets his horses ready for their debuts on time, and She's Toasty (POST 8) from Post 8 has enough ground to establish position. Curtis is a workmanlike jockey who knows Churchill Downs well and rarely goes to the post on a cold horse for this barn. At 4-1, this filly deserves serious consideration as an alternative top selection.

Secondary Choices

Go New York Go (POST 5) at 4-1 under Luis Saez from Chad Summers' barn is the pace horse of the race. If she gets loose on the front end without serious competition, the price is not generous enough to ignore. Saez is one of the best riders in the country, and from Post 5, Go New York Go (POST 5) gets a perfect stalking or running position. If the pace shapes up in her favor, this filly could wire the field.

Valkyrie (POST 6) at 5-1 for Ken McPeek with Declan Cannon is a barn with a strong track record in maiden turf and dirt races at Churchill Downs. McPeek is a perennial presence at this meet and ships sharp horses. Valkyrie (POST 6) from Post 6 with Cannon — who has had a productive start to the meet — is a legitimate contender and could be undervalued if the market overweights the Asmussen/Ortiz combination.

Storm Diva (POST 2) at 8-1 for Mark Casse with Jose Ortiz is a live longer shot given Ortiz's incredible recent form. Casse is one of the better trainers in North America and sends competitive horses to Churchill Downs regularly. Storm Diva (POST 2) from Post 2 in a six-furlong sprint gets a ground-saving inside trip, and Ortiz's hot hand could make this a surprising winner.

Lady Lux (POST 9) at 6-1 under Victor Carrasco for Genaro Garcia is a name to note. The 6-1 price is intriguing, though Garcia's barn is not a top-tier Churchill Downs operation, and Carrasco, while capable, does not inspire the same confidence as the top riders in this race.

Longshots

Youhadme At Merlot (POST 4) at 12-1 for John Ennis with Alex Achard gets a look from price players. Respected Mind (POST 1) at 20-1, Rebelka (POST 3) at 20-1, Powerful Rose (POST 10) at 30-1, and Angel Life (POST 11) at 30-1 are all deep longshots with minimal support. None of these connections would indicate a strong case for inclusion in exotic wagers unless a sharp late reversal occurs in the morning line odds.

Selections

Win: Cardio Cat (POST 7) Place: She's Toasty (POST 8) Show: Go New York Go (POST 5)

RACE 3 — Post (1:43)/12:43/11:43/10:43 — 1430f | D | M | Md 20000 | BUM | Purse $48,000

A nine-furlong maiden claiming event at $20,000 for fillies and mares. Ten fillies and mares will go two turns on the main track for a modest $48,000 purse. This is a bottom-of-the-barrel maiden claiming event, and the horses entered here reflect that reality. Luis Saez on State Charmer (POST 10) and Ben Curtis on Flashy Aviator (POST 9) are the jockey anchors in this race, along with Declan Cannon on Baby Hello (POST 3).

Race 3

Pace Analysis

Nine furlongs around two turns at Churchill Downs is a demanding test for maiden claimers. Juanita Mychiquita (POST 1) from the rail under Edgar Morales could press the early pace, and Gladly (POST 7) under Jaime Torres may also want to establish early position. If the pace is honest, the closers — particularly State Charmer (POST 10) and Will Believe (POST 8) — will benefit. The shape of the race depends on whether Juanita Mychiquita (POST 1) gets a free lead or faces early pressure from multiple sources.

Key Contenders

State Charmer (POST 10) at 3-1 is the morning-line favorite with Luis Saez and Timothy Hamm training. Hamm is a serviceable trainer and State Charmer (POST 10) at 3-1 with Saez aboard from the outside post reflects the market's opinion of her class advantage over this field. At nine furlongs in a maiden claiming event, class often wins out. The outside post is less of a concern in a two-turn route where position can be established in the first quarter.

Will Believe (POST 8) at 4-1 for Michael Lauer with Irving Moncada makes sense as a stalk-and-pounce type. Lauer puts out occasional sharp performers and Will Believe (POST 8) at 4-1 from Post 8 has a workable post position in a two-turn route.

Secondary Choices

Flashy Aviator (POST 9) at 6-1 under Ben Curtis for Rohan Crichton is a horse handicappers are looking at. Curtis is riding well this meet and Crichton occasionally places his horses effectively in maiden claimers. At 6-1, this filly has appeal as a value play.

Juanita Mychiquita (POST 1) at 4-1 from the rail under Morales for Genaro Garcia can be dangerous if she gets a soft lead. Rail posts in two-turn routes at Churchill Downs in a short field can be advantageous, and if the pace is slow, she could steal this.

Gladly (POST 7) at 5-1 for Caio Caramori with Jaime Torres is a possibility from the outside two-turn position. Caramori is an up-and-coming trainer who places horses in logical spots.

Longshots

Baby Hello (POST 3) at 12-1 for Brian Williamson with Declan Cannon is a name worth a minimal ticket in exotics given Cannon's recent form. Rocky World (POST 2) at 10-1 with Summer Pauly is a longshot with trainer Ed Moger Jr. Betty Who (POST 4) at 15-1, Ladies Love Cash (POST 5) at 20-1, and High Grace (POST 6) at 15-1 with Chase Miller are all deep prices that lack the necessary connections to inspire confidence in exotic structures.

Selections

Win: State Charmer (POST 10) Place: Will Believe (POST 8) Show: Flashy Aviator (POST 9)

RACE 4 — Post (2:14)/1:14/12:14/11:14 — 1540f | D | C | Clm 40000 | BON | Purse $78,000

A 9.5-furlong claiming race for older males and fillies at the $40,000 level for a $78,000 purse. Eight horses enter in a two-turn, mid-level claiming event. George Weaver's Epic Summer (POST 8) is the 2-1 morning-line favorite under Joel Rosario. This is a strong field for the claiming level, with some well-regarded barns represented.

Race 4

Pace Analysis

At 1 3/16 miles going two turns, pace is everything. Epic Summer (POST 8) under Rosario from the outside is likely a late runner or stalker, and the pace will be set by whatever speed emerges from the inside posts. Kid Twist (POST 7) for John Ennis with Beschizza and Mischief Mania (POST 5) under Irad Ortiz Jr. could press or stalk early. Sonic Surge (POST 6) under Luis Saez adds another tactical element. If multiple horses battle early, Epic Summer (POST 8) will be positioned to close, and Perfect Audible (POST 4) under Jose Ortiz could also benefit from a fast pace.

Key Contenders

Epic Summer (POST 8) at 2-1 is the clear morning-line choice under Joel Rosario for George Weaver. Weaver is an accomplished trainer who targets races perfectly, and Rosario in the saddle at 2-1 in a $40,000 claiming event on Derby Week's undercard is a logical anchor. From Post 8 at 1 3/16 miles, Epic Summer (POST 8) will need to make up ground but the closing profile at Churchill Downs with a fast track suits this scenario.

Mischief Mania (POST 5) at 4-1 for Ed Moger Jr. with Irad Ortiz Jr. in the irons is the most dangerous alternative. Irad Ortiz Jr. on any horse in a claiming race at this level demands attention, and Moger occasionally sends sharp performers on the Derby Week undercard. From Post 5, Mischief Mania (POST 5) gets a mid-field position with ability to control the pace if desired.

Secondary Choices

Kid Twist (POST 7) at 4-1 for John Ennis with Adam Beschizza is a legitimate threat. Ennis is a solid trainer who places horses effectively in claiming company, and Kid Twist (POST 7) at equal odds to Mischief Mania (POST 5) with a tactical post position deserves respect.

Nuck Chorris (POST 1) at 5-1 from the rail for Michael Maker under Tyler Gaffalione is never to be dismissed. Maker's barn is clicking, Gaffalione is one of the top five riders in the country, and the rail post in a two-turn route at Churchill Downs gives Nuck Chorris (POST 1) a ground-saving advantage throughout. This horse is a prime exacta piece.

Sonic Surge (POST 6) at 8-1 under Luis Saez for Robert DiBona is worth a minor play. Saez rarely goes to the post without a chance, and if DiBona has Sonic Surge (POST 6) ready, the 8-1 represents fair value.

Perfect Audible (POST 4) at 10-1 for Asmussen under Jose Ortiz is a sneaky play. The price seems high given the Asmussen-Ortiz combination, and if this horse is live, the price will compress significantly at the windows.

Longshots

Versed (POST 2) at 15-1 for Claude Brownfield and Coal Fired (POST 3) at 20-1 for Eric Foster are deep longshots without compelling angles.

Selections

Win: Epic Summer (POST 8) Place: Mischief Mania (POST 5) Show: Nuck Chorris (POST 1)

RACE 5 — Post (2:47)/1:47/12:47/11:47 — 1320f | D | M | Md 12500 | BUN | Purse $35,000

A six-furlong maiden claimer at $12,500 for males on the main track. This is low-end maiden claiming action for a $35,000 purse. Calling On Heaven (POST 3) at 1-1 is a prohibitive morning-line favorite for Michael Maker with Tyler Gaffalione. Even money in maiden claiming company is an unusually strong signal from the morning line oddsmaker.

Race 5

Pace Analysis

At six furlongs, pace will be lively with multiple horses capable of pressing early. Calling On Heaven (POST 3) at even money will likely sit in a comfortable stalking position under Gaffalione rather than pressing. Impavido (POST 6) under Luis Saez and Next Time (POST 7) at 4-1 could mix it up on the front end. If the pace collapses from a fast early fraction, Calling On Heaven (POST 3) gets the perfect trip to reel them in.

Key Contenders

Calling On Heaven (POST 3) at 1-1 is the obvious choice here. Michael Maker with Tyler Gaffalione in the irons in a $12,500 maiden claiming race represents a massive class and connections advantage. Even money signals the morning-line oddsmaker believes this horse is considerably better than his rivals. At even money, the only question is whether the exotics provide value.

Impavido (POST 6) at 4-1 under Luis Saez for Albert Stall Jr. is the only logical threat from a connections standpoint. Stall is a prominent New Orleans-based trainer who consistently sends live horses to Churchill Downs during Derby Week, and Saez on a Stall horse at 4-1 deserves respect as the main challenger.

Secondary Choices

Next Time (POST 7) at 4-1 for David Jacobson with Gerardo Corrales is a potential live threat. Jacobson occasionally places sharp horses in these spots.

Grab The Spark (POST 10) at 6-1 for Ronald Moquett with Irad Ortiz Jr. is a tantalizing angle. Irad Ortiz Jr. at 6-1 in a maiden claimer — even the bottom level — is worth noting. This could be the most underlaid horse on the board in terms of jockey talent relative to odds.

Richeztoo (POST 2) at 8-1 under Evin Roman for Joel Zawitz is a distant price play.

Longshots

Orville's Map (POST 4) at 20-1, Dress Good (POST 1) at 30-1, Big Nelson (POST 5) at 30-1, Cause Ima Boss (POST 9) at 30-1, and Blazing (POST 8) at 15-1 are all deep prices with minimal expectation of impact.

Selections

Win: Calling On Heaven (POST 3) Place: Impavido (POST 6) Show: Grab The Spark (POST 10)

RACE 6 — Post (3:20)/2:20/1:20/12:20 — 1210f | T | AO | OClm 100000n3x | BUN | Purse $141,000

The best race on the undercard. A 7.5-furlong optional claiming race on turf at $100,000 for horses that have not won three races, with a $141,000 purse. Eight older horses go over the lawn in what figures to be the most competitive event of the day outside of Race 9. Michael Maker enters two — Run Curtis Run (POST 3) and Step Forward (POST 8) — and the morning line has four horses clustered between 3-1 and 5-1.

Race 6

Pace Analysis

Seven and a half furlongs on turf is a unique test that rewards horses with tactical speed who can shift gears efficiently. Run Curtis Run (POST 3) under Gaffalione figures to press or stalk from the inside, while Golden Afternoon (POST 1) with Irad Ortiz Jr. from the rail will look to establish a ground-saving position immediately. Amoudi Bay (POST 4) under Graham and Autodrive (POST 2) under B.J. Hernandez Jr. add to the tactical mix. If the pace is honest, closers get a chance, but 7.5 furlongs on turf typically rewards the horse that can sit second or third early and have gas in reserve. This is a pace-setter's or stalker's race.

Key Contenders

Run Curtis Run (POST 3) at 3-1 is the morning-line favorite for Michael Maker with Tyler Gaffalione in the irons. Maker is handling two horses in this race, which occasionally signals confidence in a specific entrant — and the 3-1 price versus 4-1 on Step Forward (POST 8) indicates Run Curtis Run (POST 3) is his primary weapon. Gaffalione from Post 3 on the turf course at 7.5 furlongs gets an excellent tactical position — neither on the fence nor at a significant disadvantage. Maker has been sharp on the turf at Churchill Downs and Gaffalione is widely regarded as one of the top turf riders in the country right now.

Golden Afternoon (POST 1) at 4-1 with Irad Ortiz Jr. from the rail draws immediate attention. Ortiz on the lead from the fence at 7.5 furlongs on turf is a dangerous combination — he can steal this race if no one challenges early and the pace is slow. The Nicholas Vaccarezza barn is less high-profile but Irad Ortiz Jr. covers a multitude of trainer deficiencies.

Autodrive (POST 2) at 4-1 for William Bret Calhoun with B.J. Hernandez Jr. is a legitimate factor. Calhoun is one of the most effective turf trainers in the Southeast, and Autodrive (POST 2) from Post 2 has ground-saving inside position from a strong barn.

Secondary Choices

Step Forward (POST 8) at 4-1 for Maker with Joel Rosario is the barn's second string but Rosario from the outside post in a 7.5-furlong turf race has the ability to establish position quickly. If Step Forward (POST 8) is the better horse in Maker's barn, the 4-1 price is generous.

Amoudi Bay (POST 4) at 5-1 for Lindsay Schultz under J. Graham is a fair price for a horse with tactical versatility on the turf.

T Kraft (POST 6) at 10-1 for Hall of Famer Bill Mott under Junior Alvarado is a name worth noting. Mott rarely ships a horse to Churchill Downs without a legitimate chance, and at 10-1, T Kraft (POST 6) represents genuine value if Mott has this horse primed. Alvarado is effective on the turf and the price is generous for a Mott runner.

Longshots

Sine Qua Non (POST 7) at 8-1 under Luis Saez for James DiVito is a late runner who could benefit from a fast pace scenario. Alder (POST 5) at 15-1 for David Jacobson with Gerardo Corrales is a distant price play.

Selections

Win: Run Curtis Run (POST 3) Place: Golden Afternoon (POST 1) Show: T Kraft (POST 6)

RACE 7 — Post (3:51)/2:51/1:51/12:51 — 1320f | D | C | Clm 16000n2l | BUM | Purse $36,000

A six-furlong claiming sprint for fillies and mares at the $16,000 level that have not won two races, for a $36,000 purse. Ten fillies and mares will go to the gate in a wide-open lower-level claiming sprint. Sweet Bebsi (POST 4) is the 2-1 morning-line choice for Rodolphe Brisset with Irad Ortiz Jr.

Race 7

Pace Analysis

Six furlongs for lower-level claiming fillies typically produces an aggressive early pace. Ride The Broom (POST 3), Waffle House Gang (POST 10), and Loving Mischief (POST 9) all could press early. Sweet Bebsi (POST 4) under Irad Ortiz Jr. will likely stalk and kick from a forward position. If multiple fillies duel on the front end, the closers Waffle House Gang (POST 10) and Loving Mischief (POST 9) benefit.

Key Contenders

Sweet Bebsi (POST 4) at 2-1 for Rodolphe Brisset with Irad Ortiz Jr. is the clear market choice. Brisset is a top-tier trainer and Sweet Bebsi (POST 4) with Irad Ortiz Jr. at 2-1 in a $16,000 claiming sprint is a dominant combination relative to the field. From Post 4, she gets a perfect mid-gate position to stalk and pounce.

Loving Mischief (POST 9) at 4-1 for Genaro Garcia with Edgar Morales is the next logical choice. The name Mischief in the barn name suggests an Into Mischief pedigree influence, and at 4-1, Loving Mischief (POST 9) from the outside in a six-furlong sprint offers closing threat appeal if the pace collapses early. Garcia places horses intelligently.

Secondary Choices

Ride The Broom (POST 3) at 4-1 for Joe Blair Roberts with Adam Beschizza is equal odds to Loving Mischief (POST 9) and represents the early speed angle. From Post 3, Ride The Broom (POST 3) can press the pace or take the lead, and if she gets a soft lead, Beschizza is capable of stealing this.

Waffle House Gang (POST 10) at 6-1 for Keith Kinmon with Gerardo Corrales is an interesting price play from the outside. The name alone will attract casual bettors, but this horse has legitimate closing credentials if the pace collapses. At 6-1, Waffle House Gang (POST 10) is worth including in exotics.

Longshots

I'm A Cookie Lover (POST 2) at 15-1, Zafyre (POST 1) at 30-1, Mo Indian Lady (POST 5) at 12-1 under Gabriel Saez, B D's Angel (POST 6) at 20-1, Sound The Siren (POST 7) at 20-1, and Mamarsha (POST 8) at 15-1 are all deep prices with limited connections to inspire exotic inclusion. Mo Indian Lady (POST 5) with Gabriel Saez at 12-1 deserves a minor note given the Saez family presence on the card.

Selections

Win: Sweet Bebsi (POST 4) Place: Ride The Broom (POST 3) Show: Waffle House Gang (POST 10)

RACE 8 — Post (4:24)/3:24/2:24/1:24 — 2200f | D | S | Md Sp Wt | BUN | Purse $120,000

A 1 3/8-mile maiden special weight for males on dirt for a $120,000 purse. Nine horses go two-and-a-half turns in what is one of the most demanding distances run at Churchill Downs on a regular basis. Stompin Grapes (POST 2) is the 2-1 morning-line favorite for Ian Wilkes under B.J. Hernandez Jr. The distance will test stamina and breeding, and horses with classic pedigrees and tactical positioning will have the advantage.

Race 8

Pace Analysis

A 1 3/8-mile maiden special weight on the main track is a genuine stamina test. King Of Heat (POST 1) under J. Graham for Keith Desormeaux could try to establish the pace from the inside post. Stompin Grapes (POST 2) will likely stalk. Tiernanogue (POST 3) for Brendan Walsh under Tyler Gaffalione is a potential mid-race factor. Direct Strike (POST 8) for Brad Cox under Irad Ortiz Jr. is the most intriguing late entry given the barn's current Derby Week momentum, and at 4-1, this is a significant price for a Cox-Ortiz combination this week. Silver Shot (POST 9) for Asmussen under Jose Ortiz adds another powerful trainer-jockey combination.

Key Contenders

Stompin Grapes (POST 2) at 2-1 for Ian Wilkes under B.J. Hernandez Jr. is the morning-line favorite. Wilkes is an outstanding trainer at Churchill Downs with one of the highest win percentages at this meet year over year. Stompin Grapes (POST 2) from Post 2 at 1 3/8 miles gets a stalking position right off the fence, and Hernandez Jr. is a competent rider who knows this track well. This horse figures to have been bred for a long distance and prepared specifically for this spot.

Direct Strike (POST 8) at 4-1 for Brad Cox with Irad Ortiz Jr. is the single most exciting angle in this race. Cox's barn is operating at full capacity this Derby Week — his three Derby runners all worked impressively Saturday morning — and putting Irad Ortiz Jr. on a maiden special weight at 1 3/8 miles for $120,000 is not a casual decision. This is a barn that takes every race seriously, and the combination at 4-1 demands respect.

Tiernanogue (POST 3) at 4-1 for Brendan Walsh under Tyler Gaffalione is the third key runner. Walsh is one of the top trainers in North America with a strong record in maiden special weights at Churchill Downs, and Gaffalione rarely goes to the post without a genuine chance. From Post 3, Tiernanogue (POST 3) gets a perfect tactical position in a slow-to-develop marathon distance.

Secondary Choices

Silver Shot (POST 9) at 6-1 for Steve Asmussen under Jose Ortiz is a major threat from the outside. Asmussen-Ortiz at 6-1 in a $120,000 maiden special weight is a logical betting target. The outside post at 1 3/8 miles is a concern, but Jose Ortiz can overcome positional disadvantages with skilled pace management.

King Of Heat (POST 1) at 6-1 for Desormeaux under J. Graham from the rail will likely try to control the pace. Desormeaux is a crafty trainer and if King Of Heat (POST 1) gets a soft lead at this marathon distance, he could be very difficult to catch.

Sartorial (POST 6) at 8-1 for George Arnold II with Edgar Morales is a trainer known for placing horses in unusual distances — 1 3/8 miles being exactly the kind of spot where Arnold can find a field his horses can handle.

Longshots

Still Sober (POST 4) at 20-1 for Eduardo Caramori with Jaime Torres, In America (POST 5) at 30-1 for Fergus Bogle with Joseph Ramos, and Prayer (POST 7) at 20-1 for George Arnold II with Victor Carrasco are all deep prices. Arnold running two here (SARTORIAL and PRAYER) is worth a note — trainers occasionally use a second entry as a pace setup for the other.

RACE 9 — Post (4:56)/3:56/2:56/1:56 — 1870f | T | A | Alw 127000n1x | BUM | Purse $127,000

The Sunday finale and the card's premier event. A 1 1/16-mile allowance on turf for fillies and mares that have not won an allowance race, for a $127,000 purse. Eleven fillies and mares go over the lawn in a race that draws some of the most high-profile connections of the day. Bob Baffert's Brilliantly (POST 3) is the 3-1 morning-line choice under Joel Rosario, and Chad Brown's Midway Memories (POST 1) at 4-1 with Irad Ortiz Jr. makes this a marquee race.

Race 9

Pace Analysis

A 1 1/16-mile turf route for fillies in allowance company will produce a measured pace early with the real race beginning at the far turn. Midway Memories (POST 1) from the rail for Chad Brown will get a ground-saving trip from Irad Ortiz Jr. — the rail post on a firm turf course at Churchill Downs is a prime real estate position. Brilliantly (POST 3) under Rosario can stalk from outside the rail. Snipsnippitysnip (POST 5) for Brendan Walsh under Gaffalione and Plaza Athenee (POST 7) under Ben Curtis are likely mid-pack stalkers. Faithful Departed (POST 9) under Jose Ortiz at 5-1 could be the race's primary closer. Red Beretta (POST 6) at 50-1 is likely to go nowhere but could influence the pace if sent aggressively early.

Key Contenders

Brilliantly (POST 3) at 3-1 for Bob Baffert under Joel Rosario is the morning-line favorite and arrives here with the weight of a high-profile barn on her shoulders. Baffert this week has Litmus Test drawing into the Kentucky Derby field, and his barn is operating at full capacity. Baffert horses on the turf at Churchill Downs during Derby Week are always dangerous, as the barn arrives at peak conditioning. Rosario from Post 3 gets a clean outside-the-fence position, can sit in the pocket, and uncorks his signature powerful finish. The 3-1 price will compress but represents the class of this field if Baffert has her ready.

Midway Memories (POST 1) at 4-1 for Chad Brown with Irad Ortiz Jr. is perhaps the most dangerous horse in the race from a pure connections standpoint. Chad Brown is the unquestioned king of turf training in North America, and pairing his barn with Irad Ortiz Jr. on the rail in a 1 1/16-mile turf route is a formidable combination. Brown's turf percentage at major tracks is extraordinary, and Midway Memories (POST 1) from the fence will get every possible ground-saving advantage in the first turn and through the backstretch. At 4-1, this is a prime betting target.

Faithful Departed (POST 9) at 5-1 for Grant Forster under Jose Ortiz is the third key player. Forster is not the highest-profile name on this card but Jose Ortiz at 5-1 in the finale of a Derby Week card is always worth noting. With Ortiz already having won three races Saturday, he arrives Sunday with supreme confidence. From Post 9, Faithful Departed (POST 9) has a wider trip but closes strongly on turf.

Secondary Choices

Snipsnippitysnip (POST 5) at 4-1 for Brendan Walsh under Tyler Gaffalione is a serious contender. Walsh is one of the most effective turf trainers in the country and two of his horses appear in this race — Snipsnippitysnip (POST 5) and Plaza Athenee (POST 7). Walsh often enters two to generate pace and favor one, and the lower-priced Snipsnippitysnip (POST 5) appears to be the primary weapon. Gaffalione is at the absolute top of his game right now.

Totally Justified (POST 10) at 6-1 for Anna Meah under Danny Sheehy is a price play worth examining. Meah is a trainer who targets specific spots carefully, and at 6-1 in the finale, Totally Justified (POST 10) has minor exotic appeal.

Humbled (POST 2) at 12-1 for Robert Medina under Vincent Cheminaud could be a quiet longshot play — European-style riders on turf at Churchill Downs occasionally provide value.

Longshots

Plaza Athenee (POST 7) at 8-1 for Walsh under Curtis is the secondary Walsh entry and worth minor exotic inclusion. Olivia Valentina (POST 4) at 10-1 under Junior Alvarado for Carlos Luis Perez is a token price-play candidate. Salty Senorita (POST 8) at 20-1 for Maker under Jaime Torres and French Mistress (POST 11) at 30-1 for Jeff Hiles under C.J. Lanerie are distant prices. Red Beretta (POST 6) at 50-1 under Evin Roman for Michel Douaihy is almost certainly a throw-out.

Jockey Notes and Insights

Jose Ortiz arrived at Churchill Downs on Opening Day Saturday and immediately made his presence felt, sweeping the first three races for a 3-for-3 card that establishes him as the meet's dominant rider to start the meet. On Sunday he appears in seven races: Race 1 (NOGRADI, POST 5), Race 3 (noted as Declan Cannon on BABY HELLO, POST 3), Race 4 (PERFECT AUDIBLE, POST 4), Race 5 (not listed), Race 6 (not listed), Race 8 (SILVER SHOT, POST 9), and Race 9 (FAITHFUL DEPARTED, POST 9). Bettors should note that any horse Jose Ortiz rides Sunday carries a significant form angle given his momentum. His best rides Sunday appear to be Nogradi (POST 5) in Race 1 and Faithful Departed (POST 9) in Race 9.

Irad Ortiz Jr. has a full book Sunday including Bourbon Flight (POST 2) in Race 1, Cardio Cat (POST 7) in Race 2, Mischief Mania (POST 5) in Race 4, Grab The Spark (POST 10) in Race 5, Golden Afternoon (POST 1) in Race 6, Sweet Bebsi (POST 4) in Race 7 — wait, correction: Sweet Bebsi (POST 4) has Irad Ortiz Jr. — Direct Strike (POST 8) in Race 8, and Midway Memories (POST 1) in Race 9. Irad's best opportunities figure to be Cardio Cat (POST 7) in Race 2 and Midway Memories (POST 1) in Race 9.

Tyler Gaffalione won on Opening Day and appears Sunday in Race 1 on Cant Stop Munnings (POST 6), Race 4 on Nuck Chorris (POST 1), Race 5 on Calling On Heaven (POST 3), Race 6 on Run Curtis Run (POST 3), Race 8 on Tiernanogue (POST 3), and Race 9 on Snipsnippitysnip (POST 5). Gaffalione has become one of the top three riders at Churchill Downs during this meet and his mounts Sunday represent the most consistent high-quality book of any jockey on the card. His best opportunities include Calling On Heaven (POST 3) in Race 5 — an even-money shot — and Run Curtis Run (POST 3) in Race 6.

Luis Saez, consistently among the national leaders in earnings, appears across the card with Go New York Go (POST 5) in Race 2, State Charmer (POST 10) in Race 3, Sonic Surge (POST 6) in Race 4, Impavido (POST 6) in Race 5, Sine Qua Non (POST 7) in Race 6, and more. Saez's best opportunities appear to be Impavido (POST 6) in Race 5 and State Charmer (POST 10) in Race 3.

Joel Rosario has C Mcgriff (POST 1) in Race 1, Epic Summer (POST 8) in Race 4, Step Forward (POST 8) in Race 6, and Brilliantly (POST 3) in Race 9. His strongest opportunity is Brilliantly (POST 3) in Race 9 given Baffert's barn form.

Ben Curtis appears multiple times and is riding solidly at this meet. His best assignments appear to be Different Gravy (POST 3) in Race 1, She's Toasty (POST 8) in Race 2, Flashy Aviator (POST 9) in Race 3, and Plaza Athenee (POST 7) in Race 9.

Trainer Notes and Insights

Michael Maker is the trainer to watch Sunday with horses in five races: Calling On Heaven (POST 3) in Race 5, Nuck Chorris (POST 1) in Race 4, Run Curtis Run (POST 3) in Race 6, Step Forward (POST 8) in Race 6, and Salty Senorita (POST 8) in Race 9. Maker's barn is firing on all cylinders during Derby Week, and his two-horse entry in Race 6 makes that optional claiming turf event especially interesting. Calling On Heaven (POST 3) at even money in Race 5 is the bet of the day from a connections standpoint.

Ian Wilkes is a Churchill Downs specialist who trains at the highest win percentage at this track among established trainers. He appears with Bourbon Flight (POST 2) in Race 1 and Stompin Grapes (POST 2) in Race 8. Both deserve respect at their prices, and Stompin Grapes (POST 2) at 2-1 in the marathon maiden special weight is a logical favorite that could easily win.

Steve Asmussen's barn, despite Saturday's Chip Honcho Derby withdrawal, has Cardio Cat (POST 7) in Race 2, Perfect Audible (POST 4) in Race 4, and Silver Shot (POST 9) in Race 8. The most interesting is Cardio Cat (POST 7) with Irad Ortiz Jr. at 3-1 in the opening maiden sprint.

Brad Cox's barn is at full operational strength for Derby Week. Beyond his Derby runners, Direct Strike (POST 8) in Race 8 with Irad Ortiz Jr. at 4-1 is a significant play — Cox's barn does not put Irad Ortiz Jr. on horses carelessly.

Brendan Walsh enters two horses in Race 9 — Snipsnippitysnip (POST 5) and Plaza Athenee (POST 7) — which is a classic Walsh setup for the turf at Churchill Downs. The primary weapon appears to be Snipsnippitysnip (POST 5) at 4-1 under Gaffalione.

Bob Baffert, despite the Derby Week chaos with Litmus Test's late addition to the Kentucky Derby field, saddles Brilliantly (POST 3) in Race 9. This is the kind of under-the-radar Sunday allowance play Baffert excels at — the barn is at Churchill Downs anyway, the horse is prepped, and the price at 3-1 with Rosario is generous for a Baffert turf runner on a hot surface.

Chad Brown's single entry — Midway Memories (POST 1) in Race 9 — carries the weight of the most dominant turf training operation in North America. When Brown ships a horse to Churchill Downs during Derby Week for a single allowance entry, that horse is ready.

Best Wagering Strategies and Value Plays

The Sunday, April 26 card at Churchill Downs offers a manageable 11-race sequence with significant concentration of elite jockey and trainer combinations. Here is a structured approach to maximizing value.

Best Bet of the Day: Calling On Heaven (POST 3) in Race 5 at 1-1. Even money in a maiden claiming race is unusual and reflects a massive class advantage. This is a Michael Maker horse with Tyler Gaffalione in the saddle at a low claiming level — bet to win without hesitation.

Top Value Play: T Kraft (POST 6) at 10-1 in Race 6. Bill Mott rarely ships a horse to Churchill Downs without a genuine shot, and at 10-1 versus 3-1 and 4-1 shots in a competitive optional claimer, this represents significant overlay. Single-race win bets on T Kraft (POST 6) and include in exactas above and below Run Curtis Run (POST 3).

Best Exotic Structure: The Late Pick 4 spanning Races 6 through 9 represents the card's most attractive multi-race sequence. The structure below provides broad coverage at a manageable cost.

Race 9 (Alw Turf Fillies): BRILLIANTLY (POST 3), MIDWAY MEMORIES (POST 1), FAITHFUL DEPARTED (POST 9) — three horses.

A 3x1x3x3 structure gives 27 combinations. At a $0.50 base, the ticket costs $13.50 — an extremely manageable investment for a sequence with a $127,000 finale and strong-priced horses throughout.

Best Exacta Plays: In Race 1, box Nogradi (POST 5) and Cant Stop Munnings (POST 6) for a 2-horse exacta box, and add Bourbon Flight (POST 2) in the underneath position. In Race 2, key Cardio Cat (POST 7) on top of She's Toasty (POST 8) and Go New York Go (POST 5). In Race 9, wheel Brilliantly (POST 3) and Midway Memories (POST 1) over Faithful Departed (POST 9), Snipsnippitysnip (POST 5), and Totally Justified (POST 10).

Best Trifecta Structure: Race 8 offers the most trifecta value. Use Stompin Grapes (POST 2) and Direct Strike (POST 8) on top, then Tiernanogue (POST 3), Silver Shot (POST 9), and King Of Heat (POST 1) in the secondary slots, with all others underneath for a reasonable cost ticket. At 1 3/8 miles in maiden company, the order of finish is genuinely unpredictable and payouts should be robust.

Win Parlay to Consider: Calling On Heaven (POST 3) in Race 5 parlayed into Brilliantly (POST 3) in Race 9. Even money parlayed into 3-1 gives roughly 8-1 on the combination, and both horses have strong connections and reasonable cases for victory.

Horses to Avoid at Current Prices: Nogradi (POST 5) at 2-1 in Race 1 is fair value but not generous — consider using Cant Stop Munnings (POST 6) on top in the exacta at equal or longer odds. Epic Summer (POST 8) at 2-1 in Race 4 and Stompin Grapes (POST 2) at 2-1 in Race 8 are both logical choices but too short for straight win play without exotic backing. Sweet Bebsi (POST 4) at 2-1 in Race 7 is a solid play to win given the Brisset-Irad Ortiz combination but similarly offers better value as an exacta key.
