Pick Pony Track Condition Report — Lone Star Park, May 2, 2026
Track Surface & Bias
Lone Star Park's main dirt track in early May historically runs fast and true following the transitional spring weather patterns typical of the Grand Prairie, Texas area. With warm temperatures and seasonal afternoon winds out of the south-southeast common to the DFW corridor this time of year, the main track is expected to be rated fast or good, favoring horses with early speed breaking from inside to mid-range posts (1–5). Front-runners and stalkers with tactical speed tend to have a distinct advantage under these conditions, as the inside path often remains the freshest and most favorable ground. The turf course at Lone Star in early May is generally in excellent shape, having benefited from spring growth, and typically plays fair with a slight lean toward closers who can rally along the rail once it opens in the stretch.
Handicapper’s Edge
On the dirt, prioritize horses with demonstrated early speed and clean inside post draws, as pace scenarios tend to set up favorably for wire-to-wire performances. On the turf, lean toward horses with proven grass form and connections that favor patient, come-from-behind running styles, particularly in routes where the field has room to settle early. Exotic players should note that turf routes at Lone Star in spring often produce tighter finishes, making them strong candidates for rolling exacta and trifecta structures with closers underneath.
