Santa Anita Park — Race Day Overview — Saturday, May 2, 2026

Today's card at Santa Anita Park carries eleven races spanning dirt and turf, ranging from maiden special weight events to the Grade II Charles Whittingham Stakes, the showcase race of the afternoon. The card runs concurrently with Kentucky Derby Day at Churchill Downs, meaning national attention will be divided, but serious Southern California horseplayers have plenty to work with on a full, competitive program. First post is scheduled for 4:00 PM ET / 1:00 PM PT.

The headline race is Race 7, the Grade II Charles Whittingham Stakes at 2200 furlongs on turf, carrying a $200,000 purse. The Padre (POST 6) enters as the morning line favorite at even money, and this race will attract significant handle from both local and national bettors looking for action between Derby undercard events at Churchill Downs.

The remainder of the card is highlighted by a pair of $68,000 optional claimers, a $67,000 maiden special weight on turf to close the program, and a cluster of maiden, claiming, and optional claiming events that give horseplayers strong exotic wagering opportunities throughout the day. Notable trainers represented include Bob Baffert, Richard Mandella, Doug O'Neill, Peter Eurton, John Sadler, Michael McCarthy, and Mark Glatt, among others.

The scratch of RIGHT TO PARTY from the Kentucky Derby due to a veterinary scratch — replaced by ROBUSTA — is the major breaking news from Churchill Downs today, but it does not directly affect the Santa Anita card. Trainer Kenny McPeek voiced strong frustration over the regulatory scratch. Separately, the news that freshman sire Drain The Clock collected his first winner at Santa Anita on Thursday via DREAM QUEST sets an optimistic tone heading into today's program at The Great Race Place.

Weather and Track Conditions

Southern California is experiencing typical early May weather patterns. The Los Angeles basin and the San Gabriel Valley foothills area where Santa Anita is situated is expected to see sunny to partly cloudy skies on Saturday, May 2, with afternoon temperatures in the low-to-mid 70s Fahrenheit and light winds out of the west at 5 to 10 miles per hour. No meaningful precipitation is anticipated.

The main track at Santa Anita is expected to be listed as fast. Turf course conditions are expected to be firm to good, which is standard for this time of year at the Arcadia oval following the spring meet. There are no reports of overnight rain or morning workouts being moved to the main track due to surface concerns. All turf races on today's card are expected to go on the grass.

Track Bias and Post Position Analysis

Santa Anita's main track has historically shown a mid-to-outside bias at sprint distances in fast, dry conditions, as the rail path can become compressed during heavy use through a meet. On the dirt at route distances, stalkers who can sit just off the pace and accelerate through the final turn tend to have a strong advantage, as the track dries out through the day and begins to favor horses with tactical speed rather than wire-to-wire types.

On the turf course, Santa Anita's hillside-influenced grass tends to favor horses with proven finishing kicks at classic turf distances. At the 1760-furlong (one mile) and 2200-furlong (1 3/8 miles) distances, inside post positions can be a pronounced advantage if a horse can secure a forward tracking position early. However, at the longer distances and on a firm course, horses that save ground along the rail without being squeezed at the top of the stretch can generate significant late runs. Post positions from 1 through 4 at turf routes historically represent a slight advantage at Santa Anita, provided the horse is not a dead closer that will be stuck behind traffic.

For sprints on the main track today, keep an eye on horses breaking from posts 3 through 6, which tend to provide ideal positioning for pressing or stalking trips, especially at the 1320-furlong distance. Posts 1 and 2 can be advantageous if a horse has early speed and can secure the lead without being forced wide on the first turn.

RACE 1 — Post 4:00 PT / 1:00 PT — 1430f | Dirt | Straight | Maiden Special Weight | GOM | Purse $65,000

This is a seven-horse maiden special weight on the main track going 1430 furlongs. The field is made up of fillies and mares, and the race offers $65,000 to the winner. With several first-time starters and lightly-raced types in the mix, pace shape is somewhat speculative, but the morning line has given us three clear contenders with horses at 2-1, 3-1, and 4-1 as the top choices.

Race 1

Pace Analysis

Saucier (POST 3) is the morning line favorite at 2-1 and should be expected to press or control the pace from her advantageous inside post. Bad Manners (POST 2) comes off a reported 15-point Beyer improvement in her last start and represents the stalker threat in this field. Slice (POST 1) and Apples Y Peaches (POST 7) add additional pace considerations. The early pace should be contested but manageable, setting up for a horse with a strong finishing move.

Key Contenders

Saucier (POST 3) trains for Leonard Powell and draws post 3 with Armando Ayuso in the irons. Powell has been a consistent presence in Southern California maiden races, and Ayuso has been one of the meet's more active riders. The 2-1 morning line reflects genuine public support for this filly.

Bad Manners (POST 2) is trained by the legendary Richard Mandella and will be ridden by T.C. Baze. Handicappers have noted the 15-point Beyer jump in her most recent performance, which is a significant improvement line and signals a horse moving forward at the right time. Mandella's patient handling of young horses is well documented, and a Bad Manners (POST 2) win here would not surprise. Mandella consistently fires at a high percentage when he spots horses in these spots off a form improvement.

Secondary Choices

Slice (POST 1) runs for the powerful Michael McCarthy barn with Edgar Jaramillo in the irons. McCarthy regularly runs competitive maidens and the 4-1 morning line is fair. However, post 1 in a race with a fair amount of pace concern gives pause.

Apples Y Peaches (POST 7) runs for Mike Puype with Antonio Fresu up at 4-1. The outside post is a disadvantage in a short field but Fresu has been sharp on the meet and deserves note as a rider who can overcome post position issues with intelligent pace placement.

Longshots

Mizumi (POST 6) is a 6-1 shot trained by Bob Baffert and ridden by Ricardo Gonzalez. Baffert's presence in an otherwise unheralded maiden event is always noteworthy, as the Hall of Fame trainer is selective about where he spots horses and has the horses to win at any price. Worth a closer look at the windows if the toteboard drifts.

All In The Game (POST 4) runs for Craig Lewis with Kazushi Kimura up at 10-1. Lewis operates a smaller stable but occasionally surprises in these spots. Molly E (POST 5) is the second McCarthy entry at 10-1 with Tiago Pereira, and while the price is fair, the stable has a stronger hand in Slice (POST 1).

Selections

Win: Bad Manners (POST 2) Place: Saucier (POST 3) Show: Mizumi (POST 6)

Betting Strategy: Mandella-Baze is a powerful combination with a horse showing a form improvement of this magnitude. Exacta: Bad Manners (POST 2) over Saucier (POST 3) and Mizumi (POST 6).

Race 2 is a six-horse field going approximately one mile on the turf course in an optional claiming event for $80,000, restricted to horses that have not won two races other than maiden, claiming, or starter. This is a solid, competitive spot with two morning line co-favorites at 2-1 and a deep field with legitimate class.

Pace Analysis

Anmer Hall (POST 3) and Listenupshance (POST 5) share the morning line favoritism at 2-1. Yacowlef (POST 1) at 3-1 and Irish Royalty (POST 4) at 4-1 are the other key pace considerations. The rail position of Yacowlef (POST 1) could be significant on the turf course, as horses drawn inside in about-one-mile events at Santa Anita often gain early rail advantage. The pace should be moderate to honest with multiple tactical horses in the field.

Key Contenders

Anmer Hall (POST 3) trains for Peter Eurton and gets Antonio Fresu up at 2-1. Eurton is one of the more accomplished turf trainers operating in Southern California, and his ability to identify horses suited to grass routes is exceptional. Anmer Hall (POST 3) at this price deserves respect.

Listenupshance (POST 5) runs for Doug O'Neill with T.C. Baze riding at 2-1. O'Neill's barn has been active and Baze is a savvy turf jockey with good knowledge of the Santa Anita course. The wide post is a slight concern, but Baze typically navigates the turf course well regardless of post.

Secondary Choices

Yacowlef (POST 1) runs for Hector Palma with Edgar Jaramillo aboard at 3-1. The inside post could be a significant advantage here, and at 3-1 with a tactical pace position, this horse offers legitimate value.

Irish Royalty (POST 4) is the second O'Neill entry with Kazushi Kimura at 4-1. O'Neill running two horses in the same race creates an interesting dynamic, and with both Irish Royalty (POST 4) and Listenupshance (POST 5) in the field, the O'Neill barn has strong representation. Irish Royalty (POST 4) is the slightly less favored of the two but represents value.

Longshots

Dhitjari (POST 6) trains for John Sadler with Armando Ayuso up at 10-1. Sadler is a skilled turf handler and his horses typically improve when stretching out on grass. At 10-1, this is a throwout on morning line alone and deserves at least a place or show consideration in exotics.

Go Joe Won (POST 2) is a significant overlay at 30-1 for Paula Capestro with Cesar Belmont up. In a six-horse field, 30-1 is rarely a realistic price for a horse going to the post, and while Go Joe Won (POST 2) is correctly positioned at the bottom of the morning line, he can be dismissed from top selections.

Selections

Win: Anmer Hall (POST 3) Place: Yacowlef (POST 1) Show: Listenupshance (POST 5)

Betting Strategy: In a small field like this, exacta boxing the top three is reasonable. Consider a trifecta: Anmer Hall (POST 3) / Yacowlef (POST 1) and Listenupshance (POST 5) / Dhitjari (POST 6).

RACE 3 — Post 5:04 PT — 1760f | Dirt | Claiming $16,000 | BUN | Purse $26,000

This is the cheapest race on today's card, a $16,000 claimer going 1760 furlongs (one mile) on the main track for a purse of just $26,000. Eight horses are entered with two clear favorites at 2-1 each. The O'Neill barn has two entries in the race, which will create interesting wagering dynamics.

Race 3

Pace Analysis

Mighty Kai (POST 5) and Mongolian Max (POST 6) are the co-favorites at 2-1. Given their shared favoritism and the likelihood that at least one of them will be on the pace, the race shape could be contested early. Duran (POST 4) and Kingmeister (POST 3) are additional pace threats. At a mile in a cheap claimer, early pace can often be wickedly honest, setting up a closer.

Key Contenders

Mighty Kai (POST 5) runs for Doug O'Neill with T.C. Baze up at 2-1. O'Neill regularly wins with horses at this claiming level, and Baze is the right choice to navigate a competitive eight-horse field.

Mongolian Max (POST 6) runs for Francisco Rodriguez with Antonio Fresu up at 2-1. The adjacent post to Mighty Kai (POST 5) could set up early position battles between the two favorites.

Secondary Choices

Duran (POST 4) trains for Isidro Tamayo with Armando Ayuso at 4-1. Tamayo is a meet-level conditioner who consistently places his horses in appropriate spots, and Duran (POST 4) at 4-1 offers value in a field where the top two are somewhat unpredictable at this class level.

Kingmeister (POST 3) runs for Bill McLean with Kazushi Kimura at 5-1. McLean is active in the claiming ranks and Kimura has been one of the meet's most successful riders.

Longshots

Broadway Unions (POST 2) runs for Marcia Stortz with Cristobal Herrera up at 8-1. In eight-horse maiden and claiming fields, deeper prices always merit a look in exotics.

Irish Element (POST 7) is the second O'Neill entry at 15-1 with Edgar Jaramillo. At this price, the barn's clear preference is Mighty Kai (POST 5), and Irish Element (POST 7) likely serves as a pace asset or backup.

Tiz's Harbor (POST 8) runs for Isidro Tamayo with Kyle Frey at 15-1. The Tamayo barn has two horses in this race with Duran (POST 4) clearly the preferred option. J T's Watch (POST 1) is a 30-1 shot for Genaro Vallejo with Armando Aguilar, and while significant longshots do occasionally fire in cheap claimers, nothing in the current setup supports that outcome here.

Selections

Win: Mighty Kai (POST 5) Place: Duran (POST 4) Show: Mongolian Max (POST 6)

Betting Strategy: In a competitive claiming race with two equal favorites, exacta boxes and trifecta keys can be productive. Key Mighty Kai (POST 5) over Duran (POST 4), Mongolian Max (POST 6), and Kingmeister (POST 3) in the trifecta.

Race 4 is an eight-horse $10,000 claimer at 1320 furlongs on the main track. This is the lowest claiming price on the card and represents the bottom end of the conditions spectrum. JUST DEAL (POST 1) has attracted strong attention from handicappers who have designated it their Best Bet of the day on this Santa Anita card.

Pace Analysis

Just Deal (POST 1) is the heavy 1-1 favorite from the rail with Antonio Fresu riding for Doug O'Neill. The rail post in a sprint can be beneficial or problematic depending on early pace. Next Trick (POST 7) is second on the morning line at 3-1 with Jaramillo up. Novinophobia (POST 8) is the third choice at 4-1 for Bill McLean. The pace appears to set up for the front-runner given the presence of several closer-type horses in the field.

Key Contenders

Just Deal (POST 1) is the standout selection and Best Bet designation from handicappers for today's Santa Anita card. Trained by Doug O'Neill and ridden by Antonio Fresu, this horse enters as a 1-1 favorite at a level where O'Neill consistently wins. The rail post in a six-furlong sprint can be ideal if the horse breaks alertly and does not get squeezed early.

Secondary Choices

Next Trick (POST 7) runs for Ruben Gomez with Edgar Jaramillo at 3-1. Jaramillo has been active on the meet and Next Trick (POST 7) has the outside post that could allow for a clear trip in a sprint.

Novinophobia (POST 8) runs for Bill McLean with Armando Ayuso at 4-1. McLean is active in the lower claiming ranks and Ayuso has been one of the meet's standout riders.

Stagger Lee (POST 6) trains for Steven Miyadi with Ali Husain at 5-1. Miyadi is a meet-level trainer who can surprise in these spots and Stagger Lee (POST 6) represents a fair price.

Longshots

One Step Beyond (POST 5) runs for Jorge Periban with Abel Lezcano at 10-1. Meeking (POST 2) runs for Bill McLean with Welfin Orantes at 20-1, representing a second McLean entry clearly subordinate to Novinophobia (POST 8). Sir Nano (POST 3) is trained by Jesus Nunez with Edgar Payeras up at 30-1. James J. Braddock (POST 4) runs for Sergio Morfin with P. Flores at 30-1. Both can be safely dismissed from serious wagering consideration.

Selections

Win: Just Deal (POST 1) Place: Next Trick (POST 7) Show: Novinophobia (POST 8)

Betting Strategy: At 1-1, win wagering on Just Deal (POST 1) offers limited value. Emphasize the exacta: Just Deal (POST 1) with Next Trick (POST 7) and Novinophobia (POST 8). A $2 exacta wheel using Just Deal (POST 1) on top could return meaningful value.

Race 5 is a nine-horse optional claiming event at roughly one mile on the turf, restricted to horses that have not won a race other than maiden, claiming, or starter. The $67,000 purse is strong for this condition, and MISO PHANSY (POST 5) is the clear morning line favorite at 1-1.

Pace Analysis

Miso Phansy (POST 5) at 1-1 for Leonard Powell and Edgar Jaramillo is the dominant price in this field. Miss Practical (POST 7) at 3-1 and Orange Thunder (POST 4) at 4-1 are the other credible threats. The turf mile at Santa Anita tends to favor horses with tactical speed that can stalk near the pace, and the post positions of the top choices are reasonable.

Key Contenders

Miso Phansy (POST 5) is the clear public choice for trainer Leonard Powell with Edgar Jaramillo riding. Powell has been handling this horse carefully and the 1-1 morning line implies both public confidence and trainer intent. Jaramillo is the meet's prominent rider and has demonstrated a strong feel for turf routes.

Miss Practical (POST 7) runs for Carla Gaines with Ricardo Gonzalez up at 3-1. Gaines has been operating her stable with precision and Miss Practical (POST 7) at this price is a legitimate threat to the favorite.

Secondary Choices

Orange Thunder (POST 4) trains for Craig Lewis with Kazushi Kimura at 4-1. The favorable post 4 in a turf route is a genuine advantage and Lewis has been competitive in optional claiming events. Kimura's ability in turf routes should not be underestimated.

Pure Chaos (POST 2) runs for Richard Baltas with Armando Ayuso at 6-1. Baltas is one of the meet's sharper trainers and Pure Chaos (POST 2) at 6-1 with Ayuso is a legitimate upset threat.

Longshots

Headed For Om (POST 6) is trained by Tim Yakteen with Welfin Orantes at 15-1. Yakteen has been competitive at Santa Anita and this horse could outrun the price in a relaxed pace scenario.

Fibonaccis Ride (POST 3) runs for Antonio Garcia with Victor Espinoza at 15-1. Espinoza is a veteran who knows the Santa Anita turf intimately and occasionally fires at a price.

Pavel's Etoile (POST 8) is the second Garcia entry at 12-1 with Kyle Frey. Mperfection (POST 1) is a 30-1 longshot for John Ivory with Kent Desormeaux. Celestial Skies (POST 9) is 30-1 for Gloria Haley with Alfredo Bautista. Both distant outsiders can be excluded from serious wagering.

Selections

Win: Miso Phansy (POST 5) Place: Miss Practical (POST 7) Show: Orange Thunder (POST 4)

Betting Strategy: At 1-1, the favorite is tough to play for win value. Target the exacta and trifecta: Miso Phansy (POST 5) over Miss Practical (POST 7) and Orange Thunder (POST 4). Include Pure Chaos (POST 2) as a potential upset piece in trifectas.

Race 6 is a seven-horse optional claiming event for $50,000 at approximately one mile on the main track. LA SILENCIOSA (POST 3) and CASHED (POST 6) share the morning line favoritism at 2-1. This is a competitive spot with several interesting angles.

Pace Analysis

La Silenciosa (POST 3) and Cashed (POST 6) will both attract heavy support. My Love Caroline (POST 1) at 6-1 could set or press the pace from the rail, and Donttellmewhattodo (POST 5) at 6-1 adds another tactical dimension. The pace should be moderate with several horses capable of positioning near the front, setting up potential for a closer to deliver late.

Key Contenders

La Silenciosa (POST 3) runs for Victor Garcia with Edgar Jaramillo at 2-1. Garcia has been a reliable conditioner for horses at this level and Jaramillo gives the horse a strong chance with his consistent meet presence and turf/dirt versatility.

Cashed (POST 6) runs for Doug O'Neill with Antonio Fresu at 2-1. O'Neill's barn has been represented throughout today's card and Cashed (POST 6) is clearly one of the stronger plays. Fresu has been reliable and the outside post in a one-turn sprint is workable.

Secondary Choices

Redheaded Reba (POST 7) trains for Daniel Dunham with Tiago Pereira at 4-1. Pereira has had a strong presence on the meet and the 4-1 price for a horse in the closing post of a seven-horse field represents fair value.

Donttellmewhattodo (POST 5) is trained by George Papaprodromou with Kazushi Kimura at 6-1. Papaprodromou has been active at Santa Anita and the name may be unwieldy, but this horse at 6-1 in an optional claimer at this level is worth attention.

My Love Caroline (POST 1) runs for Jorge Periban with Armando Ayuso at 6-1. The rail post in a dirt sprint at this distance can be advantageous if early position is secured, and Ayuso is the right rider to navigate that scenario.

Longshots

Memetic (POST 2) is the second O'Neill entry at 20-1 with Abel Lezcano. The 20-1 morning line is appropriate given the stable's clear preference for Cashed (POST 6). Tapatia Mia (POST 4) runs for Steve Knapp with T.C. Baze at 20-1. While Baze is a capable rider, the price signals a horse that is likely outclassed here.

Selections

Win: La Silenciosa (POST 3) Place: Cashed (POST 6) Show: Redheaded Reba (POST 7)

Betting Strategy: With two co-favorites, exacta boxing La Silenciosa (POST 3), Cashed (POST 6), and Redheaded Reba (POST 7) is the most direct approach. Adding Donttellmewhattodo (POST 5) or My Love Caroline (POST 1) to trifectas provides upside.

RACE 7 — Post 7:15 PT — 2200f | Turf | Grade II | Charles Whittingham Stakes | CUN | Purse $200,000

The Grade II Charles Whittingham Stakes is the highlight of the Santa Anita card today, going 2200 furlongs on the turf course for $200,000. This is a true test of stamina on the grass, a race for older horses that rewards class and endurance. Six horses are entered with The Padre (POST 6) as the heavy 1-1 morning line favorite trained by Philip D'Amato.

Race 7

Pace Analysis

At 2200 furlongs, pace in a Grade II turf stakes is typically slow early before increasing dramatically in the final half-mile. The Padre (POST 6) should sit comfortably off the pace. Mondego (POST 4) and Hiding In Honduras (POST 1) are likely to be among the more forward-positioned horses. Seal Team (POST 3) under Ricardo Gonzalez for Richard Mandella should stalk. The critical factor in a race of this length is how much pace there is through the middle sections of the race, as horses that press unnecessarily in a small field can tire.

Key Contenders

The Padre (POST 6) is trained by Philip D'Amato and will be ridden by Antonio Fresu at 1-1. D'Amato is one of the premier turf trainers in the country, with deep expertise in routing horses over the Santa Anita grass. His ability to peak horses for marquee turf stakes is exceptional. The Padre (POST 6) at even money is short but justified in a field of this size with this trainer-jockey combination.

Mondego (POST 4) trains for Michael McCarthy and gets Edgar Jaramillo at 3-1. McCarthy's string has been in excellent form throughout the meet and Mondego (POST 4) is an attractive alternative to the even-money shot. The 3-1 price represents the best value of the top tier.

Secondary Choices

Seal Team (POST 3) runs for the legendary Richard Mandella with Ricardo Gonzalez at 5-1. Mandella's turf horses at Santa Anita are always well-prepared and Seal Team (POST 3) at 5-1 in a Grade II is a solid each-way play. Gonzalez has been consistent on the meet.

Hiding In Honduras (POST 1) trains for Jonathan Thomas with Kazushi Kimura at 4-1. The inside post at this marathon distance on turf is a meaningful advantage. If Hiding In Honduras (POST 1) can gain the rail early and settle, this horse could be a danger at the end of a long run.

Longshots

Balladeer (POST 5) runs for George Papaprodromou with Kent Desormeaux at 10-1. Desormeaux is a Hall of Fame jockey who knows Santa Anita as well as any rider alive, and his experience in Grade II events cannot be dismissed. At 10-1, Balladeer (POST 5) is worth a small exotic ticket.

Flashiest (POST 2) is trained by Leonard Powell with Armando Ayuso at 12-1. The price is long but Powell's turf horses are often live at a price, and Ayuso would not take a 12-1 mount in a Grade II without believing the horse has a chance. Use underneath in trifectas as a deep value piece.

Selections

Win: The Padre (POST 6) Place: Mondego (POST 4) Show: Hiding In Honduras (POST 1)

Betting Strategy: At 1-1, the win pool offers minimal return on The Padre (POST 6). Instead, structure a trifecta: The Padre (POST 6) with Mondego (POST 4) and Hiding In Honduras (POST 1) over Seal Team (POST 3) and Balladeer (POST 5). An exacta: Mondego (POST 4) over The Padre (POST 6) is a high-value play if you believe the favorite's price compresses the exacta.

Race 8 is a ten-horse maiden $50,000 event at 1320 furlongs on the main track for a $35,000 purse. This is a filly and mare maiden claiming race with a broad morning line distribution from 2-1 to 30-1. VEGAS NIGHTCLUB (POST 1) is the morning line favorite at 2-1, with HEAVENLY DAREDEVIL (POST 9) second at 3-1.

Pace Analysis

Vegas Nightclub (POST 1) from the rail for Richard Baltas and Armando Ayuso could establish a comfortable lead in a six-furlong sprint. Heavenly Daredevil (POST 9) from post 9 with Welfin Orantes will likely need to come from off the pace. Surfin The Coast (POST 6) at 4-1 for Jeff Mullins with Kyle Frey is positioned in the middle of the pack. The pace should be moderate with the favorite likely on or near the front.

Key Contenders

Vegas Nightclub (POST 1) is the clear public choice for trainer Richard Baltas with Armando Ayuso at 2-1. Baltas and Ayuso have formed one of the meet's more productive partnerships and Vegas Nightclub (POST 1) in maiden company at the $50,000 level represents a manageable assignment.

Heavenly Daredevil (POST 9) trains for Mike Puype with Welfin Orantes at 3-1. Puype is represented on today's card in multiple races and Heavenly Daredevil (POST 9) at 3-1 provides the best price alternative to the favorite.

Secondary Choices

Surfin The Coast (POST 6) runs for Jeff Mullins with Kyle Frey at 4-1. Mullins is a sharp trainer who spots horses well in maiden company and Frey has been reliable on the meet. The 4-1 price is attractive relative to the top two.

I'm No Swifty (POST 4) runs for Peter Eurton with Edgar Jaramillo at 6-1. Eurton's horses are typically well-prepared and Jaramillo is the right rider to give this horse a good trip from post 4.

Susan Yvonne (POST 7) runs for Jesus Ramos with Alfredo Bautista at 6-1. At the same price as I'm No Swifty (POST 4) but for a smaller operation, Susan Yvonne (POST 7) is worth noting in exotics.

Dancing With Shari (POST 5) is trained by Tim McCanna with Tiago Pereira at 8-1. The price reflects a horse that is capable of outrunning expectations.

Longshots

She Spendsalot (POST 2) runs for Bill McLean with Cesar Belmont at 30-1. Backstage Drama (POST 3) is trained by Jose Valdez with Rigoberto Sevilla at 30-1. Sally Says (POST 8) runs for Gloria Haley with Cristobal Herrera at 20-1. Grape Juice Too (POST 10) trains for Melanie McDonald with Leonel Camacho-Flores at 30-1. None of these longer-priced horses have compelling reasons to be included in primary wagering structures but Sally Says (POST 8) and Dancing With Shari (POST 5) can be used as deep exotics pieces in trifecta and superfecta tickets.

Selections

Win: Vegas Nightclub (POST 1) Place: Heavenly Daredevil (POST 9) Show: Surfin The Coast (POST 6)

Betting Strategy: A competitive maiden claiming race with a wide field creates trifecta and superfecta opportunity. Key Vegas Nightclub (POST 1) over Heavenly Daredevil (POST 9) and Surfin The Coast (POST 6) over multiple closers. Superfecta tickets using the top four at reasonable cost are the play here.

Race 9 is an eleven-horse maiden special weight on the turf at 1760 furlongs (one mile) for fillies and mares. The $65,000 purse is standard for maiden special weight conditions at Santa Anita. DREAM FROM WITHIN (POST 7) is the morning line favorite at 3-1, while SOUL SISTER (POST 5) and NERIDA (POST 9) share 4-1 odds. Neil Drysdale trains two horses in the race.

Pace Analysis

In an eleven-horse maiden field on the turf, pace shape is difficult to project with precision. Lookin At Diamond (POST 4) at 5-1 for Leonard Powell with Victor Espinoza is tactically placed and could control or press the pace. Dream From Within (POST 7) and Soul Sister (POST 5) are likely to stalk. At one mile on the turf, this field size will tend to compress into a tight group early before the real race begins in the final quarter-mile.

Key Contenders

Dream From Within (POST 7) trains for Vladimir Cerin with Kazushi Kimura at 3-1. Cerin has an excellent record placing horses in maiden turf routes and Kimura is the right choice from this post. Post 7 in an eleven-horse turf field is workable with a forward-thinking ride.

Soul Sister (POST 5) runs for Karen Headley with Tiago Pereira at 4-1. Post 5 in a turf route is a slight advantage and Pereira has been one of the meet's more active and effective riders.

Nerida (POST 9) is the second Powell entry at 4-1 with Armando Ayuso. Given that Powell also has Lookin At Diamond (POST 4) with Espinoza in the race, both horses deserve attention. Nerida (POST 9) at 4-1 from the outside post with Ayuso represents value if the horse can find a clear run.

Secondary Choices

Lookin At Diamond (POST 4) trains for Leonard Powell with Victor Espinoza at 5-1. This is the inside Powell entry with the veteran Espinoza up, and the 5-1 price is attractive. Espinoza's knowledge of the Santa Anita turf is unmatched and he can do significant damage from post 4 with a patient ride.

Medjugorje (POST 6) runs for Richard Mandella with Antonio Fresu at 8-1. Mandella's maiden turf horses are always dangerous regardless of price, and 8-1 on a Mandella entry in this spot is a fair payout.

Longshots

Ethereal Quality (POST 1) and Decisive Deception (POST 3) are the two Drysdale entries at 15-1 each, with Kyle Frey and Ricardo Gonzalez respectively. Drysdale is a Hall of Fame trainer with a magnificent history of developing turf horses, and while both are priced as longshots, his presence in a maiden turf event commands attention.

Via De La Valle (POST 8) trains for Michael McCarthy with Abel Lezcano at 12-1. The McCarthy barn is strong on this card and Via De La Valle (POST 8) at 12-1 in a maiden turf event has upside for exotic players.

Zuraya (POST 11) is the second McCarthy entry at 10-1 with Edgar Jaramillo. McCarthy having two horses in the same race with one at 10-1 is intriguing from a trainer intent standpoint.

Natural Diamond (POST 2) is 30-1 for Patrick Gallagher with T.C. Baze. While Baze is a capable rider, the morning line price makes this a throwout for win wagering. Daring Pursuit (POST 10) runs for Daniel Blacker with Cesar Belmont at 20-1.

Selections

Win: Dream From Within (POST 7) Place: Soul Sister (POST 5) Show: Lookin At Diamond (POST 4)

Betting Strategy: Target the trifecta in this wide-open eleven-horse maiden turf field. Use Dream From Within (POST 7) and Soul Sister (POST 5) on top, with Lookin At Diamond (POST 4), Nerida (POST 9), and Medjugorje (POST 6) in the middle and bottom.

Race 10 is an eight-horse optional claiming event for $80,000 at 1540 furlongs on the main track for a $68,000 purse. EXTENSIVE (POST 2) and BIG CITY LIGHTS (POST 7) share the morning line favoritism at 2-1. This is one of the stronger dirt routes on today’s card.

Pace Analysis

At 1540 furlongs (approximately 1 1/16 miles) on the main track, early pace will be crucial. Judge Miller (POST 5) at 5-1 for Mark Glatt and Antonio Fresu could press from a middle post. Speedy Wilson (POST 6) for Philip D'Amato with Armando Ayuso at 6-1 could also factor in early pace. The race sets up for a closer if the pace scenario unfolds hot.

Key Contenders

Extensive (POST 2) is trained by Michael McCarthy with Edgar Jaramillo at 2-1. McCarthy's string has been in terrific form and Extensive (POST 2) from post 2 in a dirt route is an attractive setup for a horse with tactical flexibility.

Big City Lights (POST 7) runs for Richard Mandella with Kazushi Kimura at 2-1. Mandella's presence at this optional claiming level signals a horse with ability, and Kimura provides a strong partnership. Big City Lights (POST 7) from the outside post will likely track the pace and make a late run.

Secondary Choices

Judge Miller (POST 5) trains for Mark Glatt with Antonio Fresu at 5-1. Glatt is a sharp trainer who conditions horses well for dirt routes and Judge Miller (POST 5) at 5-1 provides meaningful value in exactas and trifectas.

Modus Bestia (POST 4) runs for Richard Baltas with Tiago Pereira at 6-1. Baltas and Pereira have paired well this meet and Modus Bestia (POST 4) at 6-1 in the middle of the field represents a legitimate threat.

Speedy Wilson (POST 6) trains for Philip D'Amato with Armando Ayuso at 6-1. D'Amato's barn will be fresh off the Grade II Charles Whittingham in Race 7 and Speedy Wilson (POST 6) at this price deserves respect.

Longshots

Momad (POST 1) runs for Leonard Powell with Victor Espinoza at 10-1. Powell's barn has been active all day and Espinoza is a veteran who can fire at any price. The rail post in a dirt route at this distance is manageable.

Deer District (POST 3) runs for Vladimir Cerin with Cesar Belmont at 20-1. Drop Um (POST 8) trains for Felix Rondan with Kyle Frey at 15-1. Neither horse merits primary wagering consideration.

Selections

Win: Extensive (POST 2) Place: Big City Lights (POST 7) Show: Judge Miller (POST 5)

Betting Strategy: With two co-favorites at 2-1, the exacta is the key bet. Box Extensive (POST 2) and Big City Lights (POST 7) and add Judge Miller (POST 5) and Modus Bestia (POST 4) to trifecta combinations.

RACE 11 — Post 9:15 PT — 1760f | Turf | Maiden Special Weight | GON | Purse $65,000

The card closes with an eleven-horse maiden special weight on the turf at 1760 furlongs for $65,000. This is a colt and gelding division, and the field features two Philip D'Amato-trained horses — Melismatic (POST 3) and Koekkoek (POST 8) — as well as entries from quality stables including John Sadler, Peter Eurton, and Mark Glatt.

Race 11

Pace Analysis

In a turf maiden route of this size, the early pace is unpredictable. Flamboyant (POST 5) at 5-1 for John Sadler with Jaramillo could establish an early position. Constitution Andi (POST 4) at 6-1 for Mike Puype with Victor Espinoza adds another tactical dimension. Koekkoek (POST 8) at 3-1 and Melismatic (POST 3) at 4-1 for D'Amato are the horses to beat. The race should develop into a strong final quarter on the turf.

Key Contenders

Koekkoek (POST 8) is the morning line second choice at 3-1 for Philip D'Amato with Antonio Fresu. D'Amato's turf maiden horses are typically very well-prepared and Koekkoek (POST 8) at 3-1 is the more attractively priced of the two D'Amato entries.

Melismatic (POST 3) is the D'Amato primary entry at 4-1 with Kazushi Kimura. Both D'Amato horses merit serious consideration in what could be a barn-dominated race if the pair fires together.

Flamboyant (POST 5) trains for John Sadler with Edgar Jaramillo at 5-1. Sadler is one of the finest turf trainers in California racing history and Flamboyant (POST 5) at 5-1 is a legitimate contender.

Secondary Choices

Post Game (POST 6) runs for Peter Eurton with Armando Ayuso at 4-1. Eurton and Ayuso have been one of the better combinations on the meet and Post Game (POST 6) in a turf maiden route is a fair play at this price.

Constitution Andi (POST 4) trains for Mike Puype with Victor Espinoza at 6-1. The inside post cluster of POST 4 through POST 6 creates interesting tactical options, and Espinoza with this horse at 6-1 is a live price.

Plagarist (POST 11) runs for Mark Glatt with Abel Lezcano at 6-1. Glatt is a sharp conditioner and Plagarist (POST 11) from the extreme outside at 6-1 is a potential upset horse in a maiden turf route if the pace sets up for a late runner.

Longshots

Postmodern (POST 7) runs for Mark Glatt with Ricardo Gonzalez at 12-1. Glatt has Plagarist (POST 11) as the preferred selection, but Postmodern (POST 7) at 12-1 with Gonzalez is worth a small mention in exotics.

Its The Bandit (POST 1) runs for Brian Cunningham with Leonel Camacho-Flores at 30-1. Che (POST 2) trains for Doug O'Neill with T.C. Baze at 30-1. Despite Baze's presence, 30-1 in a maiden turf sprint indicates the stable has limited expectations. Stan Theman Musial (POST 9) and Go Ralph (POST 10) are both 30-1 for Michael McCarthy. With two entries at such extreme prices, McCarthy's better intentions are clearly elsewhere on today's card.

Selections

Win: Koekkoek (POST 8) Place: Melismatic (POST 3) Show: Flamboyant (POST 5)

Betting Strategy: D'Amato's double-barrel in the finale creates a trifecta-focused approach. Box Koekkoek (POST 8) and Melismatic (POST 3) in the exacta. For the trifecta, use Koekkoek (POST 8) and Melismatic (POST 3) over Flamboyant (POST 5) and Post Game (POST 6) over Constitution Andi (POST 4) and Plagarist (POST 11).

Jockey Notes and Insights

Edgar Jaramillo has been one of the most active riders at the Santa Anita spring meet and is represented in nearly every race on today's card. He rides Slice (POST 1) in Race 1, Yacowlef (POST 1) in Race 2, Irish Element (POST 7) in Race 3, Next Trick (POST 7) in Race 4, Miso Phansy (POST 5) in Race 5, La Silenciosa (POST 3) in Race 6, Mondego (POST 4) in Race 7, I'm No Swifty (POST 4) in Race 8, and then Flamboyant (POST 5) in Race 11. The sheer volume of quality mounts reflects his current meet standing. His assignment on Mondego (POST 4) in the Grade II Charles Whittingham for McCarthy is the career-defining ride of his Saturday.

Armando Ayuso has also been omnipresent on the card, with mounts including Saucier (POST 3) in Race 1, Dhitjari (POST 6) in Race 2, Duran (POST 4) in Race 3, Novinophobia (POST 8) in Race 4, Pure Chaos (POST 2) in Race 5, My Love Caroline (POST 1) in Race 6, Flashiest (POST 2) in Race 7, Vegas Nightclub (POST 1) in Race 8, Nerida (POST 9) in Race 9, Speedy Wilson (POST 6) in Race 10, and Post Game (POST 6) in Race 11. Ayuso is clearly one of the meet's top riders in terms of volume of quality mounts.

Antonio Fresu has been assigned several stakes-caliber rides including The Padre (POST 6) in the Grade II Charles Whittingham in Race 7 for Philip D'Amato. Fresu also rides Just Deal (POST 1) in Race 4, Anmer Hall (POST 3) in Race 2, Mongolian Max (POST 6) in Race 3, Cashed (POST 6) in Race 6, Koekkoek (POST 8) in Race 11, and Judge Miller (POST 5) in Race 10. The quality of his book, led by The Padre (POST 6) in the feature, makes Fresu the most important rider on today's card.

Kazushi Kimura is a meet regular with mounts across the board, including Hiding In Honduras (POST 1) in the Grade II and Dream From Within (POST 7) in Race 9 and Melismatic (POST 3) in Race 11. His workload in grass routes is particularly notable.

T.C. Baze is a veteran Southern California rider with strong meet statistics. His assignments on Bad Manners (POST 2) in Race 1, Listenupshance (POST 5) in Race 2, and Mighty Kai (POST 5) in Race 3 represent some of the better rides available on the card.

Victor Espinoza, while not as heavily booked as Jaramillo or Ayuso, brings Hall of Fame pedigree to every mount. His rides include Fibonaccis Ride (POST 3) in Race 5, Lookin At Diamond (POST 4) in Race 9, Momad (POST 1) in Race 10, and Constitution Andi (POST 4) in Race 11. His specific knowledge of the Santa Anita turf course is an intangible advantage on a grass-heavy card.

Kent Desormeaux, another Hall of Fame jockey, is aboard Mperfection (POST 1) in Race 5 and Balladeer (POST 5) in Race 7. At his career stage, Desormeaux picks his spots carefully and Balladeer (POST 5) at 10-1 in the Grade II is the more interesting of his two mounts.

Tiago Pereira has a full book including Soul Sister (POST 5) in Race 9 and Dancing With Shari (POST 5) in Race 8, and has been consistently competitive during the meet.

Trainer Notes and Insights

Philip D'Amato enters today's card as the marquee trainer with his heavy favorite The Padre (POST 6) in the Grade II Charles Whittingham Stakes. D'Amato is widely regarded as the premier turf training specialist on the Southern California circuit and his record in stakes turf routes at Santa Anita is exceptional. He also has Speedy Wilson (POST 6) in Race 10 and two horses — Melismatic (POST 3) and Koekkoek (POST 8) — in the Race 11 maiden turf finale. The double-barrel in Race 11 is the most intriguing trainer angle on today's card, as D'Amato rarely enters two horses in the same maiden race without legitimate expectations for both.

Doug O'Neill has entries in Races 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 11, making him the most prolific trainer on today's card by volume. O'Neill's barn typically fires at a high percentage during the spring meet, and his double entries in Race 3 (Mighty Kai (POST 5) and Irish Element (POST 7)) and Race 6 (Cashed (POST 6) and Memetic (POST 2)) give wagering players important class information about which horse is the stable's primary option.

Richard Mandella's horses always command attention regardless of price. His entries today include Bad Manners (POST 2) in Race 1, Seal Team (POST 3) in Race 7, Big City Lights (POST 7) in Race 10, and Medjugorje (POST 6) in Race 9. Mandella's patient, methodical approach to horse development means his horses typically arrive for major efforts at exactly the right time.

Michael McCarthy saddles two horses in Race 1 (Slice (POST 1) and Molly E (POST 5)) and also has Extensive (POST 2) in Race 10, Mondego (POST 4) in Race 7, Via De La Valle (POST 8) in Race 9, and Zuraya (POST 11) in Race 9, along with Stan Theman Musial (POST 9) and Go Ralph (POST 10) in Race 11. McCarthy's primary targets appear to be Extensive (POST 2) in Race 10 and Mondego (POST 4) in the Grade II.

Peter Eurton has Anmer Hall (POST 3) in Race 2 and I'm No Swifty (POST 4) in Race 8, and Post Game (POST 6) in Race 11. Eurton has been a consistent performer as a turf trainer and Anmer Hall (POST 3) is his best chance today.

Leonard Powell is represented throughout the card including Saucier (POST 3) in Race 1, Miso Phansy (POST 5) in Race 5, Flashiest (POST 2) in Race 7, Lookin At Diamond (POST 4) and Nerida (POST 9) in Race 9, and Momad (POST 1) in Race 10. His dual entry in Race 9 with Espinoza on Lookin At Diamond (POST 4) and Ayuso on Nerida (POST 9) is an interesting barn angle.

Richard Baltas has Vegas Nightclub (POST 1) in Race 8, Pure Chaos (POST 2) in Race 5, and Modus Bestia (POST 4) in Race 10. Baltas and Ayuso have been a productive combination and Vegas Nightclub (POST 1) stands as his best opportunity today.

Neil Drysdale, one of the great California-based Hall of Fame trainers, enters Ethereal Quality (POST 1) and Decisive Deception (POST 3) in Race 9. While both are priced at 15-1, Drysdale's presence in a maiden turf event signals horses that have been given time and care to be ready to fire.

Best Wagering Strategies and Value Plays

Kentucky Derby Day invariably draws national handle and dilutes the pool size at West Coast tracks. At Santa Anita today, this creates genuine value opportunities in the win pool and in exotic structures, as casual bettors are sending their dollars to Churchill Downs. The single most important concept for today's Santa Anita card: the win pools will be smaller than a typical Saturday, making exacta and trifecta odds more favorable across the board. This is a day to maximize exotic play and minimize flat win wagering except at premium value prices.

The Best Bet of the card is Just Deal (POST 1) in Race 4, as designated by multiple handicappers reviewing today's Santa Anita program. While the 1-1 morning line offers minimal win pool return, Just Deal (POST 1) should be anchored into all Pick 3 and Pick 4 sequences running through Race 4.

The single best win value on the card is Mondego (POST 4) at 3-1 in the Grade II Charles Whittingham (Race 7). With The Padre (POST 6) certain to be overbet at 1-1 or lower, Mondego (POST 4) for a top-flight operation in Michael McCarthy represents genuine overlay potential. Betting Mondego (POST 4) to win and boxing the exacta with The Padre (POST 6) is the most straightforward value structure in the feature.

For Pick 3 sequences: In Race 9, 10, and 11, a three-race late Pick 3 offers excellent structural value in maiden turf events and an optional claimer. Suggested structure: Dream From Within (POST 7) and Soul Sister (POST 5) in Race 9, Extensive (POST 2) and Big City Lights (POST 7) in Race 10, and Koekkoek (POST 8) and Melismatic (POST 3) and Flamboyant (POST 5) in Race 11. A 2x2x3 Pick 3 ticket using this structure at $1 base costs $12 and covers the most likely sequence in the final three races.

For the Grade II Charles Whittingham trifecta in Race 7, the most efficient structure is: The Padre (POST 6) and Mondego (POST 4) on top, with Hiding In Honduras (POST 1), Seal Team (POST 3), and Balladeer (POST 5) underneath. A five-horse trifecta box would be expensive given only six horses are entered. Instead, use a key box: The Padre (POST 6) and Mondego (POST 4) over everything, a partial wheel that costs $12 at $1 base for the exacta and $18 for a trifecta key.

For the early Pick 4 running through Races 1 through 4: Bad Manners (POST 2) in Race 1, Anmer Hall (POST 3) and Listenupshance (POST 5) in Race 2, Mighty Kai (POST 5) in Race 3, and Just Deal (POST 1) in Race 4 is the spine of the ticket. Using 1x2x1x1 at $1 costs $2 and is the power ticket. Adding Duran (POST 4) in Race 3 doubles the cost to $4 and provides meaningful insurance.

The superfecta in Race 8 (maiden claiming sprint) is the high-risk, high-reward play of the card. In a ten-horse maiden sprint on Derby Day with compressed pools, a superfecta box of Vegas Nightclub (POST 1), Heavenly Daredevil (POST 9), Surfin The Coast (POST 6), and I'm No Swifty (POST 4) at $1 costs $24 for all permutations and could return significant multiples if the right combination lands.

The overall value play of the day for horse players who want a single strong entry: Mondego (POST 4) at 3-1 in Race 7 is the card's best price-to-quality ratio horse. Everything else on the card either demands a heavily favored price or carries significant uncertainty inherent in maiden and claiming conditions. Mondego (POST 4) in a Grade II for Michael McCarthy at 3-1 is where the money should go.
