Race Day Overview — Belmont at the Big A, May 8, 2026

The Belmont at the Big A meeting continues to deliver high-quality racing at Aqueduct Racetrack, serving as the temporary home for NYRA's flagship product while the new Belmont Park prepares for its inaugural fall meeting scheduled to open September 18. Today's twelve-race card is headlined by the $200,000 Ruffian Stakes, a Grade II contest for older fillies and mares that has drawn a field of seven, with trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. shipping in a trio from Florida looking to repeat his 2024 success in the race. Beyond the Ruffian, the card features a strong supporting cast including a grass maiden special weight at 1870 furlongs in the finale, a turf allowance for fillies, and a pair of optional claiming routes. Total stakes purse money is robust for a Saturday at the Big A, and the overall card of ten races — capped by a full field in Race 7 — gives exotic players plenty of leverage.

The biggest news emanating from the sport this week centers on Kentucky Derby winner Golden Tempo, trained by Cherie DeVaux, who made it official Wednesday that the Curlin colt will bypass the May 16 Preakness Stakes at Laurel Park and instead point toward the June 6 Belmont Stakes. DeVaux becomes the first woman to train a Kentucky Derby winner, and Golden Tempo's connections are clearly thinking big-picture with the final jewel of the Triple Crown as the next target. DeVaux does have a runner on today's card — Pelican Pride (4) in Race 8 — giving her barn continued momentum heading into a busy stretch. The Ruffian Stakes draws attention from the Saffie Joseph Jr. barn, which won this race in 2024 with Soul of an Angel.

The Peter Pan Stakes, a traditional Kentucky Derby prep now operating as a points race for the Belmont, is also on the horizon, with GROWTH EQUITY installed as the 6-5 morning line favorite in early wagering analysis circulating among the handicapping community.

Weather and Track Conditions — May 8, 2026

Conditions at Aqueduct are expected to be favorable for racing on Saturday. Forecast models show partly cloudy skies with temperatures in the low-to-mid 60s at post time for the first race. Wind is expected out of the southwest at 10 to 15 miles per hour, which should not significantly affect times along the stretch. No precipitation is forecast, and the main track is expected to be listed as fast. The turf course, which has been getting regular use during the Belmont at the Big A meet, is anticipated to be firm to good. NYRA has been diligent about turf course maintenance during this meet, and the going should be ideal for today's two turf races — Race 4 (1320 furlongs on the inner turf) and Race 8 (1870 furlongs on the main turf).

The main dirt track at Aqueduct has been rated fast consistently this week. No significant weather disruptions have affected the surface heading into the weekend, so players can expect reliable footing and representative times across the card.

Track Bias and Post Position Analysis

Aqueduct's main track, particularly at sprint distances, has historically favored horses breaking from inside posts who can secure a ground-saving trip along the rail. The one-turn mile and routes tend to neutralize some of the inside advantage, but in sprints at 1320 furlongs, posts one through four have shown a statistically meaningful edge during the Belmont at the Big A meeting. Early pace control remains an important factor on the dirt, as closers have been meeting difficulty in the deep stretch when the pace collapses to honest fractions.

On the turf course, the inner turf at Aqueduct plays with a pronounced rail bias when the going is firm. Horses that can secure a position close to the fence, particularly in longer turf routes, gain a meaningful advantage. Post positions one through three on the turf have been particularly productive during this meet, and jockeys who can secure early position along the rail have an inherent edge. In today's Race 8 at 1870 furlongs on the turf, Miss Apples (1) holds the coveted rail draw, which is a significant factor to weigh in the wagering.

For the inner turf sprint in Race 4, Florida Patriot (1) and Nakoma (2) draw the two inside posts at 1320 furlongs. At that distance on the turf, the draw matters somewhat less than in routes, but inside posts still carry value when the course is firm.

RACE 1 — Post (1:10) — 1540f | D | AO | OClm 80000n2x | CUM | Purse $90,000

This is an optional claiming race at $80,000 for older fillies and mares going one mile and a sixteenth on the main track. The condition — non-winners of two races lifetime — restricts the field to horses who have broken their maiden but have not won a second time. The $90,000 purse is generous for the condition, and the presence of top stables like Chad Brown, Linda Rice, and Todd Pletcher signals that quality horses are entered. This is a race to take seriously from a wagering standpoint.

Race 1

Pace Analysis

With Munnings Express (4) at 1-1 on the morning line and trained by Linda Rice with Jose Lezcano in the irons, she figures to be prominent early. Limes Don't Lie (2) from the Chad Brown barn with Dylan Davis is likely to press or set the tempo from post two. The pace scenario shapes up as a two-horse early duel with Atarah (3), also from the Rice barn, likely sitting just off the pace. If Munnings Express (4) and Limes Don't Lie (2) hook up honestly through middle fractions, the race could set up for a closer, though at this distance on Aqueduct dirt a sustained pace duel is not guaranteed.

Key Contenders

Munnings Express (4) is the morning line favorite at even money and draws the optimal inside post for a horse that figures to be near the pace. Linda Rice has two horses in this race — Atarah (3) and Munnings Express (4) — which gives her barn a tactical advantage, as the two can work in concert. Jose Lezcano has been one of the more consistent performers at this meet, and at 1-1 Munnings Express (4) reflects the field's respect for her ability.

Limes Don't Lie (2) represents the Chad Brown barn and is the second choice at 2-1. Brown's operation has been excellent with fillies in non-winners of two conditions, particularly routing on the dirt, and Dylan Davis provides competent handling. From post two, Limes Don't Lie (2) gets a clean look and will be dangerous if allowed to dictate a comfortable tempo.

Atarah (3) is the stablemate to Munnings Express (4), and while she is listed at 4-1, the Rice barn almost certainly has a preference between the two. Flavien Prat takes the mount, and Prat's overall quality as a rider means Atarah (3) is live regardless of barn tactics.

Secondary Choices

Artemis Sound (5) from the Todd Pletcher barn with J.R. Velazquez is listed at 8-1 but should not be overlooked. Pletcher horses frequently improve significantly in their second starts off a layoff or when trying dirt routes for the first time, and Velazquez has the experience to put her in the right spot from post five. At 8-1, there is some value attached to her.

Longshots

All Class (1) at 8-1 from the Richard Dutrow barn draws the rail and gets Eric Cancel. Dutrow has been active at this meet and occasionally sends out a live longshot, but at even money on Munnings Express (4), All Class (1) requires a significant reason to include in exactas at equal odds to the other longshots.

Selections

Win: Munnings Express (4) Place: Limes Don't Lie (2) Show: Atarah (3)

Betting Strategy: Key Munnings Express (4) on top in exactas with Limes Don't Lie (2) and Atarah (3). Consider a small win bet on Artemis Sound (5) at 8-1 if she shows early morning steam. The Rice double entry creates a natural saver with Atarah (3) underneath in exactas.

RACE 2 — Post (1:40) — 1540f | D | R | Alw 55000s | BUM | Purse $70,000

A straight allowance at 55,000 for state-breds going one mile and a sixteenth on the dirt for fillies and mares. New York-bred allowance races frequently produce competitive fields, and with six horses entered including a Linda Rice double, pace and post positioning will be critical.

Race 2

Pace Analysis

Mezcalifornia (1) from the Michelle Giangiulio barn is the morning line favorite at 2-1 and draws the rail. If she has early speed, post one puts her in a commanding position to control the pace on a track that rewards front-runners in routes. Grace And Grit (5) at 3-1 from Amelia Green's barn with Jamie Rodriguez shapes up as a potential presser or pace stalker. The pace should be honest but not brutal, setting up for the horses who can relax off the early fractions.

Key Contenders

Mezcalifornia (1) is the horse to beat. The rail draw in a state-bred route is extremely favorable, and at 2-1 she is respected by the morning line makers. Dalila Rivera takes the mount, and Rivera has been riding with confidence during this meet. If Mezcalifornia (1) can set a comfortable pace from the fence, she will be very difficult to reel in.

Grace And Grit (5) at 3-1 is trained by Amelia Green and will have Jamie Rodriguez aboard. Green's barn has been productive with state-breds, and at 3-1 Grace And Grit (5) represents a fair price if she can get into a good tactical position early.

Secondary Choices

Adrian (3) and Princess Ny (4) represent the Linda Rice barn, splitting the rider assignments between Flavien Prat and Jose Lezcano. As with Race 1, Rice's double entry creates an interesting dynamic. Princess Ny (4) from post four with Lezcano may get the slightly cleaner trip, but Adrian (3) with Prat commands attention given the jockey's quality.

Cloudy Chance (2) at 4-1 from Chris Englehart with Eric Cancel has a reasonable post and a trainer who is a solid conditioner of state-bred fillies.

Longshots

That's Funny (6) at 10-1 from Ilkay Kantarmaci with Manuel Franco closes the field from the outside. Franco is capable of a crafty trip but That's Funny (6) will need significant pace help to get involved.

Selections

Win: Mezcalifornia (1) Place: Grace And Grit (5) Show: Princess Ny (4)

Betting Strategy: Single Mezcalifornia (1) on top in early exotics if she is favored at 2-1 or higher. The exacta box of Mezcalifornia (1) and Grace And Grit (5) offers modest value. Consider including Adrian (3) in trifecta plays as a Rice stablemate insurance.

RACE 3 — Post (2:10) — 1430f | D | C | Clm 16000 | CUN | Purse $40,000

A $16,000 claiming race for older male horses going seven furlongs on the dirt. This is a bottom-of-the-card sprint that can be tricky to evaluate but often produces a playable pace setup. Seven horses are entered, and the field is competitive without a standout morning line favorite.

Race 3

Pace Analysis

Nabokov (3) at 3-1 from Ilkay Kantarmaci with Manuel Franco and He's Got This (5) at 4-1 from Chris Englehart with Jose Lezcano figure to be the pace horses in this seven-furlong sprint. Emerald Forest (6) at 4-1 from Charlton Baker with Ricardo Santana Jr. could also press. If multiple horses vie for the lead, it sets up for a closer, though Aqueduct's dirt can favor front-runners even at seven furlongs.

Key Contenders

Nabokov (3) is the morning line co-favorite at 3-1. Kantarmaci has been active at this meet, and Manuel Franco knows this circuit well. From post three, Nabokov (3) has a clean shot to establish position early. He deserves his status as the top choice.

He's Got This (5) at 4-1 with Jose Lezcano from the Englehart barn is a major player. Englehart runs effectively at the claiming level at this track, and Lezcano is one of the better sprint riders in the colony. He's Got This (5) from post five will need to be assertive early.

Secondary Choices

Dot's Dollar (2) at 4-1 from Gustavo Rodriguez with Kendrick Carmouche is a legitimate contender. Carmouche is always live on a speed horse in a sprint, and post two is favorable.

Emerald Forest (6) at 4-1 with Ricardo Santana Jr. brings top jockey talent to a $16,000 claimer. Charlton Baker horses are capable of springing surprises, and Emerald Forest (6) is worth including.

Longshots

Graywing (1) at 8-1 from Eduardo Jones with Omar Hernandez Moreno draws the rail. Rail horses at seven furlongs can be effective at Aqueduct if they have gate speed. Graywing (1) is a stretch call.

Glint (4) at 6-1 from Amira Chichakly with Katie Davis is an interesting price. Chichakly is a lesser-known trainer but occasionally surfaces with a live longshot. Glint (4) deserves a small look in trifectas.

Screaming Uncle (7) at 5-1 from Gregory Charlerie with Reylu Gutierrez closes the field from the outside post. Outside posts at seven furlongs on Aqueduct dirt are generally unfavorable, and Screaming Uncle (7) will need a wide-open pace and a hot tempo to factor.

Selections

Win: Nabokov (3) Place: He's Got This (5) Show: Dot's Dollar (2)

Betting Strategy: Key Nabokov (3) and He's Got This (5) in exacta boxes. Use all five contenders — Nabokov (3), He's Got This (5), Dot's Dollar (2), Emerald Forest (6), and Glint (4) — in trifecta part-wheels to provide coverage.

RACE 4 — Post (2:40) — 1320f | t | S | Md Sp Wt | BUM | Purse $85,000

A maiden special weight for fillies going one mile on the inner turf. The field of eight includes two co-favorites at 2-1 morning line — Only For Now (5) from Miguel Clement and Cataenjo (7) from Todd Pletcher. This is a high-quality maiden race on the turf, and the draw of post position on a firm turf course makes the inside posts extremely valuable.

Race 4

Pace Analysis

Cataenjo (7) with Flavien Prat from post seven on a turf course where the inside is king creates a potential tactical challenge. Prat is skilled enough to find a ground-saving trip even from an outside draw. Only For Now (5) with Manuel Franco from post five is better positioned. The pace in maiden turf routes tends to be moderate, setting up for tactical riders who can rate their horses and unleash a sustained run in the stretch.

Key Contenders

Cataenjo (7) is one of two morning line co-favorites at 2-1, and Todd Pletcher's record with first-time turf starters and grass debutants is among the best in the business. Flavien Prat is one of the best turf riders in North America, and while post seven is a mild concern on the inner turf, Prat's ability to find the rail during the early going mitigates that disadvantage. Cataenjo (7) has the pedigree and connections to win fresh.

Only For Now (5) is equally deserving of top billing at 2-1 from the Miguel Clement barn. Clement is a masterful turf trainer, and post five on the inner course puts this filly within striking distance of the fence. Manuel Franco is a capable turf handler and will benefit from a ground-saving trip.

Secondary Choices

Nakoma (2) at 5-1 from Jena Antonucci with Edgard Zayas draws the second post on the inner turf, which is an outstanding position on a firm course. If Nakoma (2) has the talent to compete, her post alone could make her the best value on the board.

Angels Envy (3) at 4-1 from Rob Atras with Jamie Rodriguez is next on the morning line and draws post three — another excellent inside position. Atras is a live trainer on the turf, and Angels Envy (3) at 4-1 could offer fair value.

Longshots

Jet Mist (4) at 6-1 from Carlos Martin with Jose Lezcano draws post four, which remains inside of center on the turf. Martin has quietly become one of the more respected grass trainers in the NYRA colony. Jet Mist (4) deserves respect.

Florida Patriot (1) at 12-1 from Thomas Morley with Ricardo Santana Jr. draws the absolute rail. At 12-1, if Florida Patriot (1) has the ability to stay close to the pace from the fence, she has the best post in the race. Morley's record on the turf is not elite, but the post could cover a multitude of sins.

Time For You (6) at 10-1 from Barclay Tagg with Christopher Elliott gets the outside-center post and a legendary trainer. Tagg occasionally sits on a live maiden, and Time For You (6) is worth noting in exotics.

My Girl Aubree (8) at 8-1 from Ilkay Kantarmaci with Manuel Franco — note that Franco cannot ride two horses simultaneously, so this mount assignment requires clarification at scratch time. My Girl Aubree (8) from the outside post on the inner turf is at a geographic disadvantage regardless.

Selections

Win: Cataenjo (7) Place: Only For Now (5) Show: Nakoma (2)

Betting Strategy: Use Cataenjo (7) and Only For Now (5) as the top two in exactas. The value play here is Nakoma (2) at 5-1 from post two — include her underneath both favorites in trifectas. Florida Patriot (1) at 12-1 from the rail is a legitimate longshot inclusion in superfectas.

RACE 5 — Post (3:11) — 1760f | D | C | Clm 20000n2l | BUM | Purse $36,000

A $20,000 claiming route going one mile and three-sixteenths on the dirt for fillies and mares who have not won two races lifetime. The field of nine is competitive, and at a modest claiming price, pace and class will both be factors over the long distance.

Race 5

Pace Analysis

At nearly a mile and three-sixteenths on dirt, pace figures are critical. Lady Wisdom (9) at 3-1 from William Morey with Manuel Franco is the morning line favorite and likely shapes up as a presser or pace stalker. Nightscope (5) at 6-1 from Linda Rice with Lezcano and Karey (7) at 4-1 from Carlos Martin with Jamie Rodriguez may also have early interest. At 1760 furlongs, a moderate pace sets up for a closer, while a honest early pace benefits the stalkers and milers at heart.

Key Contenders

Lady Wisdom (9) at 3-1 is the morning line choice from the outside post nine. Manuel Franco takes the mount for trainer William Morey. Franco has been productive at this meet, and Morey is a reliable conditioner at the claiming level. The outside post at a long route distance is not prohibitive, and Lady Wisdom (9) should be positioned just off the pace.

Karey (7) at 4-1 from Carlos Martin with Jamie Rodriguez is among the most attractive options. Martin has been in good form with his claiming horses, and Rodriguez can handle a long dirt route. Karey (7) from post seven has a manageable draw.

Secondary Choices

Spirit Of Esther (3) at 4-1 from Ilkay Kantarmaci with Silvestre Gonzalez is the second Kantarmaci horse on the card and a legitimate contender. Post three gives Spirit Of Esther (3) a favorable path, and Gonzalez is capable of a quiet trip near the pace.

Nightscope (5) at 6-1 from Linda Rice with Jose Lezcano is always respectable when Rice sends out a runner with Lezcano. Post five is neutral at this distance, and Nightscope (5) has the connections to be competitive.

Tahila (2) at 5-1 from Kantarmaci with Gokhan Kocakaya is the barn's other entry in this race. Post two is favorable and Kantarmaci's barn has been active all meet.

Longshots

Moonlight Gal (1) at 8-1 from Chris Englehart with Eric Cancel draws the rail for a 1760-furlong route. A rail draw at a long route distance on dirt can be problematic if traffic develops, but Cancel is experienced enough to navigate.

So Vain (6) at 8-1 from Roshan Samsundar with Dalila Rivera is lightly regarded but should be noted in exotic coverage.

Ishkabibble (8) at 12-1 from Emron Ibrahim with Dylan Davis is a long price. Without strong contextual support, Ishkabibble (8) is best left to superfecta coverage only.

Rose Lisa (4) at 20-1 from Linda Dixon with Christopher Elliott is the longest price in the field at 20-1. Unless there is significant morning line move, Rose Lisa (4) is a pass for win wagering.

Selections

Win: Lady Wisdom (9) Place: Karey (7) Show: Spirit Of Esther (3)

Betting Strategy: Use Lady Wisdom (9) and Karey (7) as the top pair in exactas. Trifectas can include Spirit Of Esther (3), Nightscope (5), and Tahila (2) as logical fillers. At a $36,000 purse level, the trifecta and superfecta can return attractive numbers with the right spread.

RACE 6 — Post (3:42) — 1320f | D | C | Clm 20000b | BUM | Purse $37,000

A $20,000 claiming sprint at six and a half furlongs on the dirt for fillies and mares. The field of nine is again competitive, and the presence of A Maize Zing Dotie (4) at 2-1 from Chris Englehart with Manuel Franco makes her the clear morning line choice. This is a pace-oriented race that will be settled in the stretch.

Race 6

Pace Analysis

Multiple horses appear capable of pressing the early fractions. Miss Lao (1) at 6-1, Short Shift (2) at 4-1, and A Maize Zing Dotie (4) at 2-1 all project as potential pace factors. If three horses hook up through quick early fractions, the race could set up for a closer like Peak Of Chic (6) at 3-1. The pace will be a critical factor in identifying the winner.

Key Contenders

A Maize Zing Dotie (4) is the morning line favorite at 2-1, trained by Chris Englehart. The connection between Englehart and Manuel Franco is reliable, and from post four A Maize Zing Dotie (4) has a clean, uncontested look inside at the break. She deserves her odds.

Peak Of Chic (6) at 3-1 from Michael Moore with Andy Hernandez shapes up as a prime closer or pace stalker who could benefit from a contested early pace. At 3-1 on the morning line, she is priced right and represents a legitimate winning alternative.

Secondary Choices

Short Shift (2) at 4-1 from Rob Atras with Jamie Rodriguez is a competitive presser from post two. Atras horses in sprint claiming races at this level are frequently live, and Rodriguez can be aggressive from an inside draw.

Edistrudis (9) at 6-1 from Ilkay Kantarmaci with Edgard Zayas closes from the outside post. Zayas has been good at this meet and outside posts at 1320 furlongs are not crippling.

Longshots

Miss Lao (1) at 6-1 from Rachel Sells with Christopher Elliott draws the rail in a six-and-a-half-furlong sprint. If Miss Lao (1) has gate speed, the rail could be a major advantage on a bias-influenced surface.

Calling An Audible (5) at 10-1 from Edward Barker with Sahin Civaci is lightly regarded but represents a trainer who occasionally surfaces with a live one.

Sabby Sunset (3) at 12-1 from Kantarmaci with Silvestre Gonzalez is a third Kantarmaci horse on the card. With multiple entries, the barn spreads its influence, but Sabby Sunset (3) at 12-1 is a deep longshot.

Moonlit Weekend (7) at 15-1 from Joseph Parker with Katie Davis and Santagata (8) at 20-1 from Chetram Bhigroog with Reylu Gutierrez are the longest prices in the field and require significant upset scenarios to factor.

Selections

Win: A Maize Zing Dotie (4) Place: Peak Of Chic (6) Show: Short Shift (2)

Betting Strategy: Key A Maize Zing Dotie (4) over Peak Of Chic (6) and Short Shift (2) in exactas. Consider a small win bet on Miss Lao (1) at 6-1 if she is on the tote as a pace factor — the rail draw in this sprint is meaningful. Trifectas: A Maize Zing Dotie (4) with Peak Of Chic (6) and Short Shift (2) and Edistrudis (9).

RACE 7 — Post (4:13) — 1320f | t | A | Alw 82000n1x | BUM | Purse $82,000

This is a full field of fourteen going six furlongs on the inner turf in an allowance condition for non-winners of one race other than maiden or claiming. This is the deepest and most competitive race on the card from a handicapping standpoint, and a large field at a sprint distance on the turf means post position, pace, and early positioning will all be decisive.

Race 7

Pace Analysis

With fourteen horses going six furlongs on the inner turf, a chaotic early sequence is likely. Disco Star (2) from Mark Casse's barn at 4-1, One Last Knock (1) at 4-1, and Sacred Goddess (9) at 6-1 from Jeremiah Englehart's barn all project as potential pace factors. Fedupwiththefed (11) at 15-1 from David Donk with J.R. Velazquez and Floy Joy (7) at 8-1, also from Donk, represent interesting pace scenarios. In a full-field turf sprint, the rail and near-rail posts are extremely important, and the horses that can find clean ground near the fence in the first three furlongs will have a major advantage in the stretch.

Key Contenders

One Last Knock (1) draws the rail at 4-1 from Keri Brion with Kendrick Carmouche. In a full-field turf sprint at Aqueduct's inner course, the rail draw is as valuable as it gets. If One Last Knock (1) breaks cleanly and can secure the rail, Carmouche only needs to keep her balanced into the turn. This is a horse that, purely on post position, deserves heavy consideration.

Disco Star (2) at 4-1 from Mark Casse with Dylan Davis draws post two — the second-best post in the race. Casse's operation is outstanding at the allowance level on turf, and Davis is a strong turf rider. Disco Star (2) should press or stalk from an excellent position.

Boston's Phinest (4) at 6-1 from Bruce Brown with Javier Castellano has perhaps the best jockey in the field. Castellano's record on the turf is unmatched in the NYRA colony, and while post four is workable, it is the rider who makes this horse particularly dangerous. Boston's Phinest (4) is a serious contender.

Secondary Choices

Sacred Goddess (9) at 6-1 from Jeremiah Englehart with Jose Lezcano is a significant threat from an outside post. Lezcano is a reliable turf sprinter, and Englehart has been in excellent form during this meet. Sacred Goddess (9) will need to navigate from post nine but has the class to do so.

Top Of The Table (14) at 6-1 from Linda Rice with Sahin Civaci draws the outside post in a fourteen-horse field on the inner turf. This is a brutal draw, and even at 6-1, Top Of The Table (14) faces a severe geographic disadvantage. Civaci will need to hustle to find the fence.

Alpine Giant (12) at 12-1 from Jeremiah Englehart with Christopher Elliott is the second Englehart entry. Alpine Giant (12) at 12-1 from post twelve is an overlay candidate if the pace collapses and closer scenarios emerge.

Longshots

Dancingwithdestiny (5) at 8-1 from Mike Dini with Pascacio Lopez is an interesting price from a workable post.

Floy Joy (7) at 8-1 from David Donk with Dalila Rivera and Fedupwiththefed (11) at 15-1, also from Donk with J.R. Velazquez, give the Donk barn two shots in a competitive spot. Donk is a crafty trainer, and having Velazquez on Fedupwiththefed (11) at 15-1 is worth noting as a potential value play.

Sunshine Lily (13) at 8-1 from Gregory DiPrima with Kendrick Carmouche — note Carmouche also rides One Last Knock (1), so there is a conflict here. One mount will need to be vacated or a substitution made. Clarify at scratch time.

Irish Fortune (6) at 15-1 from Thomas Morley with Ricardo Santana Jr., Scorch (8) at 12-1 from Fernando Abreu with Jamie Rodriguez, Fifi La Fume (10) at 20-1 from Rudy Rodriguez with Manuel Franco, and Redwineandwhiskey (3) at 30-1 from Linda Dixon with Luis Rivera Jr. are the deep longshots in the field. Redwineandwhiskey (3) at 30-1 is best limited to superfecta coverage. Fifi La Fume (10) at 20-1 is similarly a very distant choice.

Selections

Win: One Last Knock (1) Place: Disco Star (2) Show: Boston's Phinest (4)

Betting Strategy: The rail advantage on the inner turf for a fourteen-horse sprint is the single biggest factor in this race. Key One Last Knock (1) in exactas and trifectas from on top. Use Disco Star (2) and Boston's Phinest (4) underneath. In trifectas, include Sacred Goddess (9) as a live outside threat. This race warrants a partial key structure: One Last Knock (1) with Disco Star (2), Boston's Phinest (4), Sacred Goddess (9) in trifectas. The exotic pools should be sizable given the fourteen-horse field.

RACE 8 — Post (4:44) — 1870f | T | S | Md Sp Wt | BUM | Purse $80,000

The finale is a maiden special weight at one mile and three-sixteenths on the turf for fillies and mares. Twelve horses are entered in what shapes up as the marquee race of the afternoon. The presence of Tuthilltown (11) at 2-1 from Rodolphe Brisset with Flavien Prat as the morning line favorite, along with Pelican Pride (4) at 4-1 from Derby-winning trainer Cherie DeVaux with J.R. Velazquez, gives this race a compelling storyline alongside strong handicapping merit.

Race 8

Pace Analysis

A twelve-horse turf maiden route at nearly a mile and a quarter will likely produce a moderate early pace as jockeys settle their horses. Tuthilltown (11) from post eleven and Pelican Pride (4) from post four figure to be ridden with tactical patience. Miss Apples (1) from the rail at 3-1 from Amelia Green with Prat — note Prat cannot ride both Tuthilltown (11) and Miss Apples (1). This apparent conflict needs resolution at scratch time. The pace should be modest through six furlongs, with the race unfolding as a stretch run. Inside horses that can find the rail will again have a significant advantage at 1870 furlongs on the turf.

Key Contenders

Tuthilltown (11) at 2-1 is the morning line favorite from Rodolphe Brisset's barn. Brisset is one of the top turf trainers in the NYRA colony, and his maiden turf runners are consistently well-prepared. From post eleven in a twelve-horse field at a mile and three-sixteenths, there is a post position concern, but skilled jockeys often find the path to the rail during the long run to the first turn. Tuthilltown (11) at 2-1 is the horse to beat on class and trainer pattern alone.

Miss Apples (1) at 3-1 from Amelia Green with Flavien Prat — pending jockey conflict resolution — draws the rail for a long turf route, which is a tremendous positional advantage. If Miss Apples (1) can secure the fence through the first turn and rate into the stretch with energy, she has every opportunity to wire this field. Green's barn has been effective with turf maidens this meet.

Pelican Pride (4) at 4-1 from Cherie DeVaux with J.R. Velazquez carries significant momentum given DeVaux's status as the trainer of Golden Tempo, the 2026 Kentucky Derby winner. DeVaux's barn is clearly in top form, and post four on the inner turf at 1870 furlongs is a favorable draw. Velazquez is a masterful turf rider who will find the fence at the first opportunity.

Secondary Choices

Amazing Gracer (8) at 4-1 from Harold James Bond with Jose Lezcano is a legitimate runner. Bond has been training solid turf maidens, and Lezcano's feel for long turf routes is excellent. From post eight, Amazing Gracer (8) will need to find a ground-saving path but has the ability to do so.

Soaring Spirit (9) at 5-1 from Miguel Clement with Manuel Franco is trained by one of the best turf conditioners in North America. Clement's maiden turf runners have an outstanding record, and Soaring Spirit (9) at 5-1 is a competitive price. Post nine is workable at this distance, and Franco will rate the filly into the stretch.

Ticket To Ride (2) at 6-1 from Saffie Joseph Jr. with Sahin Civaci is the Joseph barn entry in this maiden turf route, and with Joseph also having horses in the Ruffian Stakes, his operation is firing on multiple cylinders today. Post two gives Ticket To Ride (2) an excellent inside position. Ticket To Ride (2) deserves serious consideration.

Longshots

Felixyn (6) at 8-1 from Thomas Morley with Ricardo Santana Jr. is a grass angle worth watching. Santana is a productive turf rider, and post six is manageable.

Neri (12) at 8-1 from Bond with Ricardo Santana Jr. — note Santana cannot ride both Felixyn (6) and Neri (12). One mount will change. Neri (12) from the outside post at 8-1 has a post disadvantage in this turf route.

Beau's Bella (7) at 12-1 from Jeremiah Englehart with Junior Alvarado is an interesting price given the trainer's form this meet. Beau's Bella (7) at 12-1 may be a situational overlay if Englehart has been working this filly well.

Little Finch (5) at 15-1 from Harold James Bond with Javier Castellano is a fascinating Castellano mount given his standing as the top jockey in the colony. Bond putting Castellano on a 15-1 morning liner deserves attention — trainers do not book elite jockeys to lose.

Encantar (10) at 15-1 from David Donk with Dylan Davis is another Donk entry. Encantar (10) at 15-1 from post ten in a turf route requires a big performance.

Big Jackie (3) at 30-1 from James Ferraro with Reylu Gutierrez is the longest price in the field. Big Jackie (3) is best used only in superfecta coverage at this price.

Selections

Win: Tuthilltown (11) Place: Pelican Pride (4) Show: Miss Apples (1)

Betting Strategy: Key Tuthilltown (11) on top with Pelican Pride (4) and Miss Apples (1) underneath in exactas. In trifectas, include Soaring Spirit (9), Ticket To Ride (2), and Amazing Gracer (8) as viable third-position horses. Little Finch (5) at 15-1 with Castellano is a recommended superfecta inclusion — the jockey booking is too prestigious to ignore entirely.

Jockey Notes and Insights

Flavien Prat remains the top call rider on this card, with mounts in Race 1 on Atarah (3), Race 4 on Cataenjo (7), and Race 8 on either Miss Apples (1) or Tuthilltown (11) — the apparent double-booking in Race 8 needs clarification before wagering. Prat is arguably the best grass rider in North America currently, and his mounts in today's turf races command premium attention regardless of odds.

Jose Lezcano is the other dominant presence on today's card, with rides in Race 1 on Munnings Express (4), Race 2 on Princess Ny (4), Race 3 on He's Got This (5), Race 5 on Nightscope (5), and Race 8 on Amazing Gracer (8). Lezcano has been consistent and dependable throughout this Belmont at the Big A meeting, and trainers continue to seek him out for key mounts.

Manuel Franco is similarly active, with rides spread across six races. Franco handles Nabokov (3) in Race 3, Only For Now (5) in Race 4, Lady Wisdom (9) in Race 5, A Maize Zing Dotie (4) in Race 6, Fifi La Fume (10) in Race 7, and Soaring Spirit (9) in Race 8. The volume of quality mounts given to Franco reflects his standing in the jockey colony.

Javier Castellano's mounts today deserve special attention. He rides Boston's Phinest (4) in Race 7 and Little Finch (5) in Race 8. Castellano does not take rides lightly at this stage of his career, and both of those horses — particularly Little Finch (5) at 15-1 in the turf maiden — deserve respectful treatment in exotic wagers.

J.R. Velazquez appears in Race 1 on Artemis Sound (5), Race 7 on Fedupwiththefed (11), and Race 8 on Pelican Pride (4). His booking on Pelican Pride (4) from the DeVaux barn, fresh off the Kentucky Derby victory with Golden Tempo, suggests the connections are serious about this filly.

Kendrick Carmouche has the rail in Race 7 on One Last Knock (1), which is identified as a critical post position advantage in the turf sprint. A potential conflict with Sunshine Lily (13) in the same race should be monitored.

Ricardo Santana Jr. rides throughout the card including Emerald Forest (6) in Race 3 and Irish Fortune (6) in Race 7, and appears on Felixyn (6) in Race 8 while also listed on Neri (12) in Race 8 — again, a potential jockey conflict that will be resolved by scratch time.

Dylan Davis has the Chad Brown mount in Race 1 on Limes Don't Lie (2) and Disco Star (2) in Race 7. His Race 7 mount is particularly attractive given Casse's record and the excellent post draw.

Trainer Notes and Insights

Linda Rice has an extraordinary six horses entered across today's card, including double entries in Race 1 (Atarah (3) and Munnings Express (4)) and Race 2 (Adrian (3) and Princess Ny (4)), plus Nightscope (5) in Race 5 and Top Of The Table (14) in Race 7. Rice's operation is one of the most productive in the NYRA colony at the claiming and allowance levels for fillies, and her double entries create tactical options that the connections can exploit. However, bettors should be aware that one horse in each double entry is likely the preferred choice — Munnings Express (4) at 1-1 in Race 1 and Princess Ny (4) with Lezcano in Race 2 project as the preferred runners based on morning line prices and jockey assignments.

Ilkay Kantarmaci is similarly represented across multiple races today with Nabokov (3) in Race 3, Tahila (2) and Spirit Of Esther (3) in Race 5, Sabby Sunset (3) and Edistrudis (9) in Race 6, and My Girl Aubree (8) in Race 4. Kantarmaci's volume at this meet has been notable, and the barn occasionally springs a price winner when attention is divided.

Todd Pletcher's mounts — Artemis Sound (5) in Race 1 and Cataenjo (7) in Race 4 — command full respect. Pletcher's record with grass debutants and with horses making surface switches continues to be among the best nationally, and Cataenjo (7) in the turf maiden is his most interesting play of the day.

Cherie DeVaux, fresh off the Kentucky Derby triumph with Golden Tempo, sends out Pelican Pride (4) in Race 8. DeVaux's barn is clearly peaking at the right time, and Pelican Pride (4) with J.R. Velazquez is among the most attractive horses on the turf portion of today's card.

Rodolphe Brisset's Tuthilltown (11) in Race 8 is the morning line favorite and reflects Brisset's outstanding record with turf maidens at the NYRA tracks. Brisset has an uncanny ability to have horses ready to fire in their first or second turf starts.

Jeremiah Englehart has Sacred Goddess (9) and Alpine Giant (12) in Race 7, plus Beau's Bella (7) in Race 8. His form this meet has been strong, and Sacred Goddess (9) at 6-1 in Race 7 is worth singling out.

Miguel Clement's turf trainers are always well-prepared. Only For Now (5) in Race 4 and Soaring Spirit (9) in Race 8 both carry Clement's positive grass trainer angle.

Saffie Joseph Jr. has Ticket To Ride (2) in Race 8 alongside his Ruffian Stakes entries. Joseph's barn is clearly in top form this spring, and Ticket To Ride (2) at 6-1 from post two in a turf route deserves inclusion in exotic wagers.

David Donk has three horses on the card: Floy Joy (7) and Fedupwiththefed (11) in Race 7 and Encantar (10) in Race 8. Donk's use of Velazquez on Fedupwiththefed (11) at 15-1 is a meaningful jockey angle worth monitoring.

Harold James Bond has three entries in Race 8 — Little Finch (5), Amazing Gracer (8), and Neri (12). Bond booking Javier Castellano on Little Finch (5) at 15-1 while using Lezcano on Amazing Gracer (4) and a conflicting Santana on Neri (12) suggests Little Finch (5) may be Bond's preferred runner despite her odds.

Best Wagering Strategies and Value Plays

The most important value principle on today's card is the turf bias at Aqueduct's inner course on a firm track. Inside posts — particularly posts one through four — carry a meaningful edge in both Race 7 and Race 8. Bettors who incorporate this bias into exotic structures will have a built-in mathematical advantage.

Race 8’s outstanding value angle is LITTLE FINCH (5) at 15-1 with Javier Castellano. The trainer-jockey booking angle on a turf maiden is a meaningful signal. Include LITTLE FINCH (5) in all trifecta and superfecta structures behind TUTHILLTOWN (11) and PELICAN PRIDE (4).

For Pick 4 wagering spanning Races 5 through 8, a recommended structure is: Race 5 — Lady Wisdom (9) and Karey (7); Race 6 — A Maize Zing Dotie (4) and Peak Of Chic (6); Race 7 — One Last Knock (1) with Disco Star (2) and Boston's Phinest (4); Race 8 — Tuthilltown (11) with Pelican Pride (4) and Miss Apples (1). This structure balances coverage with manageable cost and targets three competitive races where the top choices have legitimate vulnerabilities.

The late Pick 5 beginning in Race 4 is a recommended play. Cataenjo (7) or Only For Now (5) as a single in Race 4, doubling into A Maize Zing Dotie (4) in Race 6, then spreading in Races 7 and 8, offers excellent potential for a strong return given the complexity of the full-field turf sprint in Race 7.

The best single bet of the day is One Last Knock (1) in Race 7 — the rail draw in a fourteen-horse inner turf sprint at an allowance level is as strong a positional advantage as you will find at any race meeting, and 4-1 is a fair price for that advantage alone.
