SunRay Park Race Day Overview — May 9, 2026

Eight maiden claimers go to the gate in this opening sprint for non-winners. The $7,500 maiden claiming tag suggests limited talent, but the field has a clear pace shape that should set up the race in a logical manner.

Race 1

Pace Analysis

The early pace figures to be contested. Nine Lives Elmer (1) from the Natalie Douglas barn has shown early speed tendencies, and Ringo (4) under Enrique Portillo Gomez projects as a prominent factor from the break. West Is West (5) with Aldo Arboleda should also be near the front. The result of this three-way early battle will dictate whether the closer Delightful Reserve (8) can run them down in the lane. If the pace is genuinely hot, the deep closers get a look. If one of the early speed horses gets loose, this race could be over before it turns for home.

Key Contenders

Delightful Reserve (8), trained by Zachary Quezada and ridden by Oscar Andrade Jr., opens as the morning line favorite at 2-1 and deserves the short price. Quezada has been among the more effective maiden claiming trainers at SunRay, and the 2-1 morning line in a field of this caliber commands respect. Andrade Jr. is one of the more active and reliable riders on the grounds and will have this horse positioned with a clean outside trip. The challenge for Delightful Reserve (8) will be whether the pace plays fast enough to present a closing opportunity in the 990-furlong sprint, where ground-saving horses are always at a premium. West Is West (5), trained by Jeffrey J. Trujillo and ridden by Aldo Arboleda, is also listed at 4-1. Trujillo conditions a reasonable stable at SunRay, and West Is West (5) from post five has good enough position to be competitive. Longshots

Giuliano's Song (7), from trainer Bernadette Barrios and jockey Cerapio Figueroa, opens at 8-1 and will need pace trouble to factor. Figueroa is an active rider who can produce on occasion, but this horse's morning line suggests limited expectations from the barn.

No Mask Required (3) at 10-1 under Alfredo Sigala and trainer Jeff Hudson is a horse to watch if the early pace completely falls apart and the field backs up. Hudson is a competent trainer, but this runner's odds suggest a likely also-ran role.

Kat'sunclejimmy (6) at 12-1 with Jose Miguel Vazquez will need a perfect trip from post six and significant pace help to be competitive. This is a lottery ticket at best.

You N How Manymore (2) at 20-1 is the longest shot in the field. Trainer Danny Hernandez and jockey A. Medellin have limited realistic expectations in this spot.

Betting Strategy: Delightful Reserve (8) is the play at 2-1. The Quezada/Andrade combination in maiden claiming events at SunRay represents a reliable angle. Single Delightful Reserve (8) on top in the daily double and use Ringo (4) as an alternate. In the exacta, play Delightful Reserve (8) over Ringo (4) and Nine Lives Elmer (1). A small trifecta box of Delightful Reserve (8), Ringo (4), and Nine Lives Elmer (1) is reasonable at this level. The 2-1 morning line will likely compress further, so the primary value here is in the exotics.

RACE 2 — Post 3:40 PM — 1430f | D | M | Md 7500 | BUM | Purse $10,800

Nine maiden claimers stretch out to 1430 furlongs in this route for maidens. This is a challenging race to solve with a wide-open morning line featuring three horses at 4-1, including the co-favorites. The BUM designation — fillies and mares — narrows the eligible horses but does not simplify the wagering.

Race 2

Pace Analysis

Attila Style (5) at 2-1 is the lone morning line favorite and should be expected to press the pace from post five. Pleasin N Teasin (6) and Oscar Night (7) figure to set up a contested early pace scenario, while Emotional Runaway (9) from the outside will likely be used forward from the start. With multiple pace pressers in a route, the race could set up for a closer, but closers in routes at SunRay at this level can be inconsistent.

Amparan is a proven partner for the barn and handles the distance well. From post five, Attila Style (5) will have a clean run with the option to press or rate. This is a horse to build around in the exotics.

Pleasin N Teasin (6), trained by Jeff Hudson and ridden by Luis Ramon Rodriguez, opens at 4-1 and is a legitimate contender. Hudson runs competitive horses at this level, and the 4-1 price is fair. Rodriguez is one of the more accomplished riders on the SunRay circuit and will get a clean trip from post six. The main question for Pleasin N Teasin (6) is whether this horse can sustain its pace effort through the longer route distance.

Emotional Runaway (9), trained by Joy I. Marlin and ridden by T.J. Hebert, is listed at 4-1 from the outside post. Hebert is a capable rider with a track record at this meet, and the outside post in a route is manageable if the pace develops in front of this horse. Danjerus Cloud (8) at 10-1, trained by Sherry Armstrong and ridden by Kelsi Purcell, is an interesting price if Armstrong has this horse fit. Armstrong wins regularly at SunRay and has shown the ability to bring horses to the post ready to run. Purcell is an active jockey on the grounds.

Kayce's Gonna Ride (4) at 12-1 with Simon J. Buechler and Enrique Portillo Gomez is likely a long-shot play only. The odds reflect limited expectations, though Gomez's presence on any horse in a field this competitive is worth noting.

Eight fillies and mares compete in this claiming sprint at $7,500 restricted to horses that have not won two lifetime. The n2l condition filters out the most experienced claimers in the barn and creates a field where class separation is more achievable.

Race 3

Pace Analysis

Hotshot Luk (5) and Bonified Wildcat (6) figure to be the primary pace setters based on their tactical positioning and trainer expectations. Runaway Goddess (3) under Francisco Amparan could also be forwardly placed for Valdez-Cabral, setting up a potentially contentious early pace in a short sprint. Flaquita (8) at 8-1, trained by Danny Morales and ridden by Kelsi Purcell, is the third horse at the same morning line price. Morales is active at this meet, and Flaquita (8) from the outside post will need a wide trip but could close ground in the lane at the price.

Longshots

Scottie Jo (2) at 12-1 under Terrill Tsosie and Alfredo Sigala is a modest longshot. Tsosie conditions horses at this track with some regularity, and Sigala is a capable sprint jockey. The 12-1 price suggests limited expectations but a clean trip from post two could produce a mild surprise.

However, the wide spread of morning line odds — from 3-1 to 20-1 — indicates a race with multiple viable contenders and significant uncertainty.

Race 4

Pace Analysis

With twelve horses, the early pace figures to be contentious. Low Rollin (1), Twist 'n Sport (3), and Tinaja (10) all project as early pace types. Tinaja (10) at 3-1 under Francisco Amparan for trainer Alberto Amparan has the combination of talent and tactical speed to set or press the pace from an outside post, though that post will require extra early hustle to clear. Air Sport One (9) at 8-1 for Roberto Fournier and Enrique Portillo Gomez is another mid-price contender. Gomez is a capable pilot, and Fournier conditions horses with some regularity at this meet. Post nine in a twelve-horse field is challenging but not prohibitive if this horse gets a clean run.

Silver Twilight (6) at 6-1 for Bart Hone and A. Medellin draws a more manageable post with potential for a clean trip. Hone is an underrated trainer at SunRay, and Silver Twilight (6) at 6-1 from post six represents mild value in the middle of the field.

Longshots

Perfect Ruler (2) at 10-1 under Todd W. Fincher and Luis A. Valenzuela draws post two and could steal a piece if the early pace collapses. Fincher is a capable trainer but the morning line reflects limited confidence.

Storm Cannon (5) at 15-1 for Andres Gonzalez and Alfredo Sigala is a functional speed type but the 15-1 morning line suggests the barn has modest expectations.

Comfortafterchaos (7) at 12-1 for Jose R. Gonzalez Jr. and Oscar Andrade Jr. is worth noting given Gonzalez Jr.'s overall standing at the meet. The 12-1 price in a twelve-horse field could yield value in a wide trifecta.

Regal's Arch (4) at 20-1 for Danny Morales and Kelsi Purcell, Golden Gato (11) at 20-1 for Larry Henry and Enrique Portillo Gomez, and Ghostly Spirit (12) at 20-1 for Terrill Tsosie and Luis Ramon Rodriguez round out the extreme longshots. The outside posts for Golden Gato (11) and Ghostly Spirit (12) essentially eliminate any realistic chance absent significant pace trouble throughout the field.

Betting Strategy: This is one of the most complicated races on the card due to the field size. Tinaja (10) deserves the edge based on trainer-jockey connectivity and morning line respect, but the post position is a legitimate concern. Play Tinaja (10) and Twist 'n Sport (3) in a win parlay. In the exacta, box Tinaja (10), Twist 'n Sport (3), and Low Rollin (1). A trifecta keying Tinaja (10) and Twist 'n Sport (3) on top with a spread including Charlie Thyme (8), Silver Twilight (6), and Air Sport One (9) below is reasonable. This race is best approached as a trifecta investment given the field size and moderate purse.

RACE 5 — Post 4:55 PM — 990f | D | C | Clm 7500b | BUM | Purse $21,060

Ten fillies and mares contest this sprint claiming race for the $7,500 price tag. The BUM designation limits the field to females. Shell Game (8) opens as the 3-1 morning line favorite, with Lone Mountain Girl (3) and Marksalot (6) at 4-1 as co-secondary choices.

Race 5

Pace Analysis

This field features several horses capable of early pace. Lone Mountain Girl (3) under Luis Ramon Rodriguez for Jose R. Gonzalez Jr. and Marksalot (6) under Oscar Andrade Jr. for Todd W. Fincher both project as pace types. Shell Game (8) for Edgar Moreno and Enrique Portillo Gomez is more likely a pressing or stalking type. If Lone Mountain Girl (3) and Marksalot (6) engage in a pace battle, Shell Game (8) could be the beneficiary.

Shell Game (8), trained by Edgar Moreno and ridden by Enrique Portillo Gomez, opens as the 3-1 morning line favorite in this all-female sprint. Moreno is a winning trainer at SunRay, and Gomez is one of the more accomplished jockeys at the meet. Post three from the inside is a clean draw, and Rodriguez is skilled at positioning horses through the turn in a sprint. If Lone Mountain Girl (3) sets the pace and is not pressured relentlessly, the 4-1 price could be an underlay.

Marksalot (6) at 4-1 for Todd W. Fincher and Oscar Andrade Jr. is the third realistic win candidate. Fincher is a capable trainer, and Andrade Jr. has been effective throughout this card. Post six offers a fair position in the middle of the field. Marksalot (6) at 4-1 warrants inclusion in all exotic wagering structures.

Secondary Choices

La Vikina (9) at 6-1 for Valdez-Cabral and Cerapio Figueroa is a horse worth noting at the price. Valdez-Cabral saddles horses regularly at SunRay and La Vikina (9) could be primed for a big effort. Figueroa is comfortable in these sprint events and the outside post nine is manageable at this price.

Prettywittyandwise (7) at 8-1 for Dayson Lavanway and Aldo Arboleda is a useful inclusion at the price. Lavanway is an emerging trainer at SunRay, and Prettywittyandwise (7) at 8-1 could offer overlay value in exacta and trifecta tickets.

Forty Five (10) at 8-1 for Casey T. Lambert and Kelsi Purcell draws the outside post but Lambert is a consistent trainer. The price is fair for the risk associated with post ten.

Longshots

Pretty Peppy (2) at 10-1 for Filiberto Quiroz and Alfredo Sigala is a sprinter with some early pace ability but the odds suggest modest expectations. Dannybob (5) at 12-1 for Valdez-Cabral and A.
