Track Surface & Bias
Finger Lakes on a standard dirt (D) surface typically plays fair-to-fast when dry, with a mild lean toward early speed at sprint distances like 5f. Historically, middle posts (3–6) have a slight edge, allowing horses to avoid kickback from the rail while not losing ground wide into the turn. When moisture is present in the track, speed often becomes more dominant, with front-runners and pace-pressers holding a stronger advantage, while deep closers can struggle to make up significant ground.
Handicapper’s Edge
Given typical Finger Lakes dirt tendencies, give extra credit to horses with proven early foot or tactical speed, especially in sprints, and downgrade one-dimensional closers who rely on a fast meltdown up front. Post position should be a secondary factor: look for runners drawn away from the extreme inside and outside, particularly those with consistent early positioning and solid local form.
