Pick Pony Track Condition Report — Fairmount Park, May 19, 2026

Track Surface & Bias

With a traditional dirt (D) surface in play and typical late-spring Midwest conditions, Fairmount Park usually plays fairly honest but can tilt slightly toward speed, especially in the sprint distances. Inside to mid posts (1–6) often hold a mild advantage in lower-level claimers and sprints, as they allow early pace types to secure position before the first turn. Routes on a dry or “fast” dirt strip tend to reward tactical stalkers sitting just off the pace, with deep closers needing an honest or contested early tempo to get involved.

Handicapper’s Edge

Given the slight historical lean toward speed and tactical types on dirt, prioritize runners with proven gate speed or consistent early positioning, particularly in sprints and claiming races. In routes, give extra credit to horses that can sit within a few lengths of the lead while still finishing strongly, and be cautious of one-dimensional closers who rely on extreme pace meltdowns.
