Pick Pony Track Condition Report — Penn National, May 20, 2026

Weather Forecast

Expect mild late-spring conditions with afternoon temperatures in the upper 60s to low 70s°F. Rain chances appear low to moderate, with only spotty showers possible, and light to moderate winds generally out of the west to northwest at 5–12 mph.

Track Surface & Bias

On a dry or only slightly damp dirt track at Penn National, the surface typically plays fairly honest but with a slight lean toward pace-pressers and stalkers sitting just off the early speed. Inside-to-middle posts (1–6) on the main track are usually acceptable, with a mild preference for runners who can secure position into the first turn without having to gun to the front. If any showers materialize and the track tightens up, inside speed can become more dangerous in sprints, while route races may still allow mid-pack runners to grind into contention late.

The turf course at Penn National, when firm to good, tends to favor tactical runners with a strong finishing kick rather than deep closers dropping far out of it early. Mid-gate posts are ideal on the grass, as far outside draws can be forced wide on both turns, particularly in larger fields. A slightly give-y surface from light moisture usually enhances the advantage of horses with proven turf stamina and the ability to sustain a long, steady run rather than relying on a short burst.

Handicapper’s Edge

Given these likely conditions, prioritize dirt runners with tactical speed who can sit within a couple of lengths of the lead, especially from inside-to-middle posts, and upgrade any proven front-runners if the track shows signs of tightening up through the early races. On turf, give extra credit to horses drawn in the middle of the gate with a demonstrated ability to finish strongly off a stalking or mid-pack trip, and be cautious about deep closers who may need a hotter pace than they are likely to get.
