Pick Pony Track Condition Report — Churchill Downs, May 28, 2026

Track Surface & Bias

With a standard dirt (D) main track and turf (T) course expected to play on the fast/firm side typical of the late-spring Churchill Downs meet, early speed and pace control should be assets on both surfaces. On the dirt, Churchill historically rewards forwardly placed runners—especially those breaking from inside to middle posts in sprints—while two-turn dirt routes can be a bit more forgiving to stalkers sitting just off the pace. On the turf, a firm, glib course generally tilts toward tactical speed and inside-saving trips, with deep closers needing an honest or pressured pace to get involved late.

Handicapper’s Edge

Under these likely fast/firm conditions, give extra credit to horses with proven Churchill Downs form, especially those showing early or tactical speed and the ability to secure position into the first turn. In multi-race wagers, be cautious about overemphasizing deep closers on either surface unless the race shape clearly projects multiple committed pace elements to soften up the front end.
