Race Day Overview — Laurel Park, Saturday, May 30, 2026

Maryland Jockey Club serves up a full 12-race card at Laurel Park this afternoon, with first post at noon. The program features a healthy mix of turf and dirt racing, including a pair of optional claiming events worth $56,000 each in Races 9 and 10, and an allowance sprint on the main track in Race 8 carrying a $48,000 purse. The Maryland racing community continues to buzz following the recent Preakness meet, and trainers have been pointing horses toward today's Laurel program throughout the week. With NYRA dark and Monmouth running a limited turf-heavy card, several connections have opted to ship to Laurel, adding depth to the upper-tier races.

The Racing Biz has published full-card picks and analysis for today's program, and the In The Money Media team has also released their Tips and Trips column covering the full Laurel card. Consensus among the handicapping community appears to focus on several live turf races in the middle and late portions of the card. Keep an eye on Races 7, 9, and 11, all carded for the turf, as the most competitive betting affairs of the afternoon.

The Maryland Jockey Club team has published their daily handicapping guide, and free past performances are available through their promotional partners. Saturday handle is expected to be solid given the holiday weekend atmosphere and the competitive fields assembled.

Weather and Track Conditions — Laurel Park, May 30, 2026

Conditions at Laurel Park figure to be favorable for afternoon racing. The Baltimore-Washington corridor is experiencing seasonal late-May temperatures in the mid-to-upper 70s, with partly cloudy skies expected to give way to more sun as the afternoon progresses. No significant precipitation is forecast for today's racing program, which is welcome news given the turf-heavy card. Five of the 12 races are carded for the grass, including three in the back half of the program.

The turf course at Laurel has been receiving generally positive reviews this meet, and with dry conditions expected to hold, the going should be firm to good — ideal for European-influenced turf types and horses that have shown a preference for a firmer surface. The main track, a one-mile dirt oval, is expected to be listed as fast. Bettors should check the official track condition report closer to post time, as early-morning maintenance work can sometimes result in a slightly off condition on the inside path that evens out by midday.

Post position bias on the Laurel turf over the current meet has slightly favored horses with inside-to-middle posts in route races, where rail runners can save ground on the first turn. In dirt sprint races, outside posts from the gate have shown modest advantage, particularly in the 6-furlong distance. The dirt route races tend to be more neutral with respect to post position given the long run to the first turn.

Post Position and Track Bias Analysis

The Laurel Park turf course has been playing fairly evenly this spring meet, with a slight lean toward horses that can secure a ground-saving position early. In the 1-mile and 1 3/8-mile turf routes, rail and second-over positions have converted at a slightly above-average clip when the pace is honest. Horses forced very wide into the first turn in the 1980-furlong (approximately 1 3/16-mile) turf events tend to lose ground that can prove costly late. Post position is less decisive on the turf in sprints around one turn, where traffic and pace scenario matter more than gate position.

On the main track, inside posts in the 7-furlong and 1-mile events have held up reasonably well, with the rail playing fair. However, in dirt sprints from the chute (6 furlongs and under), horses breaking from posts 7 through 10 have shown no significant disadvantage and occasionally benefit from a cleaner trip away from early traffic. Post 1 in dirt sprints has been a slight negative when horses face early pressure and have to check or steady leaving the gate.

Jeiron Barbosa has been particularly adept at navigating Laurel's nuances this meet, and Mychel Sanchez continues to demonstrate a strong feel for the dirt course. On the turf, the colony of regular turf riders including Jorge Ruiz and Jean Gregor Briceno have been among the more active performers.

RACE 1 — Post (12:00) — 1980f | T | R | Alw 16000s | BUN | Purse $24,000

An 1 3/16-mile turf route restricted to horses that have never won two races. Twelve horses entered, making for a full field on the grass. The allowance condition and turf surface should favor seasoned turf campaigners who can rate off the pace and finish over this longer distance. With a dozen horses navigating the turns, pace scenario and trip luck will be critical.

Race 1

Pace Analysis

This is a large field over a route of ground on the turf, and the early pace should be relatively honest without being suicidal. With horses like Tyson's Delivery (1) and potentially Carloun (2) pressing forward, the pace figures to be moderate at best. Several closers loom in the back half of the field, suggesting a scenario where a horse sitting a stalking trip in fourth or fifth position is ideally placed. The large field size at 1 3/16 miles adds a significant traffic element, and horses breaking from the outer posts will face a significant ground loss disadvantage on the opening bend.

Key Contenders

Brighty (10), the 2-1 morning line favorite trained by Jonathan Maldonado and ridden by Raul Mena, commands attention as the clear public choice in this spot. The Maldonado-Mena combination has been active and productive at the meet, and this horse figures to be the one to beat based on form and connections. Mena is among the most capable jockeys at navigating the Laurel turf course, and from post 10, he will need to find a good trip around the outside of this large field.

Freedom Glider (9), trained by John Salzman Jr. and piloted by J.S. Rocco Jr., is a co-4-1 shot on the morning line and represents a live threat in this spot. Salzman knows this condition well and has a knack for placing horses in spots where they are ready to fire. Post 9 is workable from a positioning standpoint, and Freedom Glider (9) could easily rate just off the pace and be in a perfect position turning for home.

Secondary Choices

Better Watch It (3) at 4-1 from the outside draw of post 3 gives Madison Meyers a competitive runner, and Kevin Gomez has been among the more active riders at the meet. The middle of the field figure as stalkers and closers, and Better Watch It (3) should have options. Carloun (2), trained by Keri Brion and ridden by Kingsley Taylor, is a 5-1 shot and Brion is one of the more reliable conditioners in the Maryland colony at this condition level. Celtic Prince (12), also from the Brion barn, is listed at 5-1 with Martin Chuan aboard. Brion saddling two horses in the same race at similar odds is worth noting — connections feel both have a legitimate shot.

Longshots

Tyson's Delivery (1) at 8-1 from the rail could steal this if the pace collapses. Rail on the turf over 1 3/16 miles is tricky, but if this horse can settle early and find a clean run, the odds would be generous. West Mountain (8) at 10-1 under Jeiron Barbosa is a horse to note given Barbosa's sharp form at the meet. Elfuegomasbrilante (6) at 12-1 with Jose Vargas is a potential price play if the chalk falters. Lino's Fire (7) at 20-1 with Jean Gregor Briceno rates a glance at price, as Briceno has shown he can get horses home on the Laurel turf. Bold Licorice (4) at 15-1 and Blackthorne Brusca (11) at 15-1 are at long odds for a reason, though Blackthorne Brusca (11) with Sanchez adds a capable jockey into the equation. Pencil Me In (5) at 30-1 is a significant price for a reason and would be a significant upset.

Selections

Win: Brighty (10) Place: Freedom Glider (9) Show: Carloun (2)

RACE 2 — Post (12:32) — 1870f | D | M | Md 12500 | BUN | Purse $22,000

A 1 1/16-mile maiden claiming event on the dirt for a $12,500 tag. Eight horses, a manageable field. This is a race at the bottom of the claiming ladder and the quality is modest, but there are legitimate contenders.

Race 2

Pace Analysis

Divine Swagger (2) at 2-1 is the morning line favorite and projects as the likely pace-setter or presser in this race. If this horse gets to the front in a race with limited early speed challengers, the race could set up for wire-to-wire. Hooraw (5) and River City Runner (7) figure to be early pressing types or stalkers. A moderate early pace would favor closers, but the distance — 1 1/16 miles on dirt — should sort out the classiest individual regardless of trip.

Key Contenders

Divine Swagger (2), the 2-1 favorite trained by Anthony Aguirre Jr. and ridden by Jean Gregor Briceno, is the clear top selection based on morning line support. Briceno is one of the hotter riders at Laurel this meet, and Divine Swagger (2) figures to be forwardly placed. Aguirre has been developing this runner carefully and the betting support reflects strong confidence from connections.

River City Runner (7) at 3-1 for trainer Michael Trombetta and jockey Mychel Sanchez is a strong play. Trombetta is one of the most accomplished and consistent trainers in the Maryland colony, and his horses routinely outperform their morning line odds. Sanchez has a tremendous read on the Laurel main track and handles maiden claimers as well as any jockey in the barn area. This is a horse to take seriously.

Secondary Choices

Hooraw (5) at 4-1 from the Kevin Boniface barn with Jeiron Barbosa up is a very live contender. Boniface sends two horses into this race — Hooraw (5) and DEPUTY A.P. (8) — suggesting he has strong confidence in at least one of his entrants. Barbosa has been riding with notable authority at the meet. Transquaking (3) at 4-1 for trainer Suzanne Stettinius with Emanuel Rosario represents a trainer who knows Maryland racing well. Stettinius also sends My Captain (4) at 12-1 with Tais Lyapustina, though that runner is a much longer price and figures as a field filler at best.

Longshots

DEPUTY A.P. (8) at 4-1 with Kingsley Taylor for the Boniface barn is a horse to keep in mind given the trainer's two-pronged attack. Gonna Make It (1) at 10-1 for Ben Feliciano Jr. with Jose Vargas would be a mild surprise but is not impossible. Treasurthememories (6) at 10-1 for Trombetta is a second Trombetta entrant — like Brion in Race 1, having two horses in the same race sometimes indicates the trainer believes both are live. My Captain (4) at 12-1 is a field-filler at the price.

Selections

Win: River City Runner (7) Place: Divine Swagger (2) Show: Hooraw (5)

RACE 3 — Post (1:04) — 1320f | T | R | Alw 7500s | BUM | Purse $24,000

A one-turn mile on the turf for female horses that have never won two races. Eleven horses entered. The allowance condition at this level draws a competitive bunch, and the turf sprint will require early positioning given the one-turn nature.

Race 3

Pace Analysis

With 11 fillies and mares entered on the turf at one mile, the early pace is uncertain. Getaway Palace (2) at 2-1 from the Erin McClellan barn projects as the horse with the most tactical ability to control or press the pace. If she gets loose on the lead, this could be a wire-to-wire scenario. Bay Street (6) and Lady Zeta (7) may also seek early position. A contested pace opens the door for closers Stella Mars (10) and others to come from the back.

Key Contenders

Getaway Palace (2) at 2-1 is the clear favorite, trained by Erin McClellan and ridden by Inoel Beato. McClellan is an established Maryland conditioner and this runner is well-suited for today's conditions. The post 2 position on the turf is favorable for this type, allowing a forward trip without the disadvantage of the rail.

Lady Zeta (7) at 4-1 from the Lacey Gaudet barn with Forest Boyce up is a horse that handicappers consistently highlight in these spots. Gaudet runs a tidy operation and knows this condition level inside and out. Boyce has been a reliable pilot this meet on the Laurel turf.

Secondary Choices

Bay Street (6) at 4-1 for Damon DiLodovico with Ismerio Villalobos is worth including in multi-race wagers. DiLodovico has been competitive at Laurel and this runner may press the pace and prove tough late. Stella Mars (10) at 6-1 for trainer Jamie Ness with Mychel Sanchez is an interesting price. Ness runs well at Laurel and Sanchez gives this horse every chance, particularly if the pace gets honest and a closer can swoop in.

Longshots

Don't Tell Kelly (4) at 8-1 for Kenneth Cox with Jeiron Barbosa is a horse to include in exotics at a price. Fivecommatwo (8) at 15-1 for Gina Perri with J.S. Rocco Jr. rates a minor look. Blessed Candy (1) at 30-1, Mainstream Sellout (9) at 30-1, Afterneath (3) at 20-1, Total Bliss (5) at 20-1, and Bugged Out (11) at 20-1 are all longshots facing stiff competition from the well-supported top choices. Bugged Out (11) with Raul Mena is the only one of this group that carries a capable pilot who might find a perfect trip.

Selections

Win: Getaway Palace (2) Place: Lady Zeta (7) Show: Stella Mars (10)

RACE 4 — Post (1:33) — 1210f | D | AO | OClm 62500n1x | BOF | Purse $49,000

A 6-furlong optional claiming sprint on the dirt for horses that have never won a race other than maiden, claiming, or starter. Carrying a $49,000 purse, this is a quality race. Only six horses entered, which creates a manageable field and cleaner pace scenarios.

Race 4

Pace Analysis

Lyudmila (5) at 1-1 and Slewperstitus (6) at 2-1 figure as the two primary pace-setters in this six-horse field. If both force the issue early, the pace could set up favorably for Rerun Table (4) from the stalking position. In a small field, pace scenarios are more predictable, but the two morning line favorites at short prices suggest the public sees a two-horse race with Rerun Table (4) as the main threat.

Key Contenders

Lyudmila (5) at 1-1 is the heavy morning line favorite trained by Justin Nixon and ridden by Jean Gregor Briceno. Even-money favorites in a six-horse field at this level are typically well-meant, and Briceno is one of the sharper tactical riders in the barn area. This filly/mare is expected to be forwardly placed and control the race from a comfortable stalking or pressing position.

Slewperstitus (6) at 2-1 for veteran trainer W. Robert Bailes with Jevian Toledo is the clear second choice. Bailes is a deeply experienced horseman and Toledo is among the top riders in the mid-Atlantic. The rail-to-outside draw of post 6 in a six-horse field is essentially a clean outside post, giving Toledo all the room he needs.

Secondary Choices

Rerun Table (4) at 3-1 for John Salzman Jr. with J.S. Rocco Jr. is a horse to keep alive in exacta and trifecta wagers. Salzman sends Rerun Table (4) in here off what figures to be solid preparation, and in a race where the two favorites may push each other, a stalker could inherit a significant advantage.

Longshots

Last Gift (1) at 12-1 for Anthony Farrior with Jose Vargas, Malibu's Rumrunner (2) at 15-1 for Todd Beattie with Yabriel Ramos, and Juniper's Jubilee (3) at 15-1 for Jose Magana with Jorge Ruiz are all longshots who would need several things to go right. None of these three rates an automatic toss, but their morning line odds suggest the market sees them as significant underdogs. In a short field like this, any of these could pick up minor money if the short-priced horses disappoint.

Selections

Win: Lyudmila (5) Place: Slewperstitus (6) Show: Rerun Table (4)

RACE 5 — Post (2:03) — 1210f | T | M | Md 16000 | BUM | Purse $24,000

A maiden $16,000 claiming event at 1 mile on the turf for fillies and mares. Twelve horses entered, creating a full field and significant traffic concerns in a maiden grass event. These are horses that have been unable to break their maiden to this point and are susceptible to surprises.

Race 5

Pace Analysis

Let Her Pass By (4) at 2-1 is the morning line favorite and figures as the primary pace influence. If she can establish position early without burning excessive energy, she sets up as the horse to catch. Forty Seven Smoker (2) and Weather Beater (9) may also factor into the pace. In a 12-horse maiden turf field, pace can be volatile and unpredictable, and a stalking or closing trip from mid-pack often proves most effective.

Key Contenders

Let Her Pass By (4) at 2-1 for trainer Richard Sillaman and jockey Jose Vargas commands attention as the betting favorite. Vargas has been one of the busiest and more productive riders at the meet. This filly figures to be well-placed early and has the credentials to graduate in this spot.

Forty Seven Smoker (2) at 4-1 for trainer Mark Shuman with Jorge Ruiz is interesting. Shuman runs two horses in this race, the other being Hollywood Mischief (12), which suggests confidence in the stable's overall chances. Ruiz is a capable turf pilot and post 2 gives Forty Seven Smoker (2) a desirable inside trip.

Secondary Choices

Good Axe (6) at 4-1 for Jamie Ness with Mychel Sanchez is a horse that represents excellent trainer-jockey synergy. Ness runs well at Laurel and Sanchez has a strong feel for maiden turf races. Weather Beater (9) at 5-1 for Salzman with Jeiron Barbosa is a live runner — Salzman's barn is active and Barbosa has been getting horses to the wire effectively this meet.

Contra (8) at 6-1 for trainer Sarah Nagle with Hector Karamanos is an interesting price play. Nagle is a capable conditioner and Contra (8) at 6-1 may be underrated by the market. Hail No (11) at 6-1 for trainer C. Beale Payne with Ismerio Villalobos is another value play worth including in multi-race tickets at the price.

Longshots

Kelsey Hill Girl (1) at 15-1 for Emanuel Geralis with Jevian Toledo is a mild longshot interest — Toledo is simply too good a rider to dismiss entirely. Hollywood Mischief (12) at 12-1 is Shuman's second entrant and could be the stable's sneaky play. Lucky Tin Tin (10) at 20-1 for A. Ferris Allen III with Yomar Ortiz, Tai Tai Rush (3) at 20-1 with Brittany Scampton, Don't Do It (5) at 30-1 with Madeline Rowland, and Feel The Bolt (7) at 30-1 with Tais Lyapustina face very tough competition from the well-supported top choices and appear to need significant improvement.

Selections

Win: Let Her Pass By (4) Place: Good Axe (6) Show: Weather Beater (9)

RACE 6 — Post (2:36) — 1320f | D | C | Clm 12500n2l | BUM | Purse $22,000

A 7-furlong dirt claiming event for fillies and mares that have won no more than two races lifetime. Twelve horses entered at the $12,500 claiming price. These races can be tricky to handicap with large fields and varying abilities.

Race 6

Pace Analysis

This race figures to have multiple early speed horses based on the composition of the field. Over My Cents (2) and The Great Maybe (8) are likely to factor into the early pace battle. If speed duels early, closers like Danni's Rhythm (10) could benefit significantly. The 7-furlong distance on dirt with a large field means pace is a primary handicapping factor.

Key Contenders

The Great Maybe (8) at 2-1 is the clear morning line favorite, trained by Carlos Mancilla and ridden by Jorge Ruiz. Mancilla enters two horses in this race, with Julie Belle (7) also from the barn. The Great Maybe (8) at 2-1 is the stable's primary runner and Ruiz is a capable handler in these claiming events. The short price suggests strong barn confidence.

Over My Cents (2) at 3-1 for Jose Magana with Forest Boyce is the main danger. Magana also has Juniper's Jubilee (3) in Race 4, suggesting the barn is active today. Boyce has been getting decent results at the meet and Over My Cents (2) from the inside-favorable post 2 is well-placed.

Secondary Choices

Danni's Rhythm (10) at 6-1 for W. Robert Bailes with Jeiron Barbosa represents solid trainer-jockey connections at a value price. Bailes is also active in Race 4 with Slewperstitus (6) and Race 8, indicating a strong day for the barn. Barbosa at 6-1 is a play worth making. Sweet Honey Bee (1) at 5-1 for Ashley Stees with Kevin Gomez is a horse to include from the rail — Gomez has been productive at the meet and this filly could steal the show early from the one-post.

Longshots

Turkish Breeze (11) at 15-1 for Kieron Magee with Emanuel Rosario deserves a mention. Magee is a capable conditioner and Turkish Breeze (11) at 15-1 is a potential price play in exotics. Ready For Magic (5) at 15-1 with Tais Lyapustina and Christy My Love (9) at 15-1 with Matilda Burnham are longshots who face a tough road. Cheese (3) at 20-1 with Yomar Ortiz would be a surprise. I'm A Lil Wicked (6) at 20-1 with Jose Vargas, Campaign Mischief (4) at 30-1, Julie Belle (7) at 30-1 with Jean Gregor Briceno, and A P M Notion (12) at 30-1 with Gavin Ashton round out the longshot tier. None of these figure to seriously threaten the top two choices under normal circumstances.

Selections

Win: The Great Maybe (8) Place: Danni's Rhythm (10) Show: Over My Cents (2)

RACE 7 — Post (3:07) — 1980f | T | S | Md Sp Wt | BUN | Purse $47,000

An 1 3/16-mile maiden special weight event on the turf. Ten horses entered. This is the day's most prestigious maiden event and carries a healthy $47,000 purse. At this distance and surface, breeding and trainer expertise with turf horses becomes a critical factor.

Race 7

Pace Analysis

Your Lordship (7) and Orator (8) are both listed at 2-1 on the morning line, creating an unusual co-favorite scenario that suggests these two horses are expected to dominate. The early pace is likely to be moderate in a maiden turf route, with Lorraine (1) potentially setting the tempo from the rail and these two favorites settling in stalking positions. A solid pace duel would set up closers, but with two co-favorites, the market is pricing in a dual threat that covers both pace scenarios.

Key Contenders

Your Lordship (7) at 2-1, trained by the exceptional Graham Motion and ridden by Jorge Ruiz, is a horse to take seriously at any price. Motion is one of the premier turf trainers on the East Coast — his grass horses routinely outperform expectations and he has a well-earned reputation for patience with developing turf routes. Ruiz is the right call on a Motion turf runner and the post 7 position is workable on this configuration.

Orator (8) at 2-1 for trainer Kathy Neilson with Jose Vargas is the other co-favorite. Neilson is an experienced Maryland conditioner with a solid record in maiden turf events. Vargas has been among the more productive jockeys at the meet and Orator (8) from post 8 will have tactical options.

Secondary Choices

Lorraine (1) at 4-1 for trainer Danielle Hodsdon with Forest Boyce is an interesting stalker from the inside post. The rail in a 1 3/16-mile turf route is a genuine concern for traffic, but if Lorraine (1) can settle and find a clean trip, the inside position saves ground throughout. Boundless Skies (3) at 8-1 for Jorge Duarte Jr. with Hector Karamanos is a horse that deserves respect at the price — Duarte occasionally sends sharp horses at prices in maiden turf events.

Longshots

Anytime (4) at 10-1 for Madison Meyers with Kevin Gomez is a horse to include in larger exotic tickets. Wickham Lane (5) at 10-1 for Tim Woolley with Mychel Sanchez is worth a mention — Sanchez's presence alone demands inclusion in trifectas and superfectas at 10-1. Skycross (9) at 15-1 for Miguel Vera with Jean Gregor Briceno could be a horse that fires fresh on the turf. Starmetal (2) at 20-1 for Michelle Nihei with Gavin Ashton, Hard Swing (6) at 30-1 for Samuel Davis with Yomar Ortiz, and Red Rum Raisin (10) at 30-1 for Keri Brion with Kingsley Taylor are all facing a steep task against the Motion and Neilson runners. Red Rum Raisin (10) being from the Brion barn adds minor interest but the price reflects an uphill battle.

Selections

Win: Your Lordship (7) Place: Orator (8) Show: Lorraine (1)

RACE 8 — Post (3:41) — 1540f | D | A | Alw 48000n1x | BUM | Purse $48,000

A 1 3/32-mile allowance for fillies and mares on the dirt. Seven horses entered. Never won other than maiden or claiming. This is a quality race with a $48,000 purse and a manageable field. The distance is an unusual configuration and slightly favors horses who can rate off the pace.

Race 8

Pace Analysis

Nancy Mary (7) at 2-1 is the morning line favorite and projects as the primary class threat in this field. Looks First (5) at 3-1 may also be forwardly placed. With only seven horses, trips will be cleaner and class and pace figures will be more decisive than in larger fields. A moderate early pace benefits quality horses with late-running ability.

Key Contenders

Nancy Mary (7) at 2-1 for trainer Damon DiLodovico and jockey Raul Mena is the clear top choice. DiLodovico has been running horses well at this allowance level and Mena is one of the more effective pilots in the colony at routing distances on the dirt. From the advantageous outside post 7, Nancy Mary (7) will have a clean trip throughout.

Looks First (5) at 3-1 for trainer Horacio De Paz and jockey Kevin Gomez is the main challenger. Gomez has been productive at the meet and De Paz has delivered horses in good form this spring. Looks First (5) from post 5 has tactical flexibility — she can press or stalk and be in a good spot turning for home.

Secondary Choices

She's Not A Lad (2) at 4-1 for John Salzman Jr. with Jevian Toledo is a very live play. Salzman is active throughout today's card, and Toledo brings significant skill to the mount. Divine Works (4) at 6-1 for Michael Trombetta with Mychel Sanchez is the Trombetta stable's entry and should never be discounted. Trombetta runners in allowance company have an exceptional record at Laurel and Sanchez is the right call.

Longshots

Anita Beer (1) at 6-1 for Kenneth Cox with Jeiron Barbosa is worth including in trifectas and superfectas. Barbosa's current form is strong enough to make any 6-1 shot worth considering. Persian (3) at 6-1 for Ronald Abrams with Andrew Wolfsont is a horse that some handicappers have highlighted as a potential overlay if her best form is returning. Fitness (6) at 15-1 for Gina Perri with Martin Chuan is a significant longshot with little support.

Selections

Win: Nancy Mary (7) Place: Looks First (5) Show: She's Not A Lad (2)

RACE 9 — Post (4:13) — 1870f | T | AO | OClm 55000b | BUN | Purse $56,000

A 1 1/16-mile optional claiming event on the turf for open company, with a $56,000 purse. Eight horses entered. This is one of the day's feature races and should attract sharp betting action. Optional claiming events at this price attract quality horses who may run for the tag or decline to be claimed.

Race 9

Pace Analysis

Siege Of Boston (2) at 2-1 projects as the likely pace-setter in this field. Trained by the accomplished James Toner and ridden by Jeiron Barbosa, this horse will dictate tempo from an early position. If Siege Of Boston (2) gets uncontested to the lead, the pace could be soft enough to allow a wire-to-wire effort. Jack's Legend (5) and Fuerteventura (7) may press or stalk, and Miranda Rights (1) could be a closer in the mix. A genuine pace battle would set up Hardspun Reason (3) or longer-priced closers.

Key Contenders

Siege Of Boston (2) at 2-1, trained by James Toner and ridden by Jeiron Barbosa, is the morning line favorite and the horse the rest must beat. Toner is one of the most accomplished turf trainers in the mid-Atlantic region with an outstanding record in optional claiming events at this level. Barbosa is in excellent form and will put Siege Of Boston (2) in the ideal position to repel all challengers.

Jack's Legend (5) at 4-1 for Kenneth Cox and Jevian Toledo is a horse that commands significant respect. Cox is very active today with multiple runners, and Toledo is one of the top pilots in the region at any distance. From post 5, Jack's Legend (5) has the tactical option to press or stalk and be a serious threat in the stretch.

Secondary Choices

Fuerteventura (7) at 4-1 for Jamie Ness with Mychel Sanchez is another live runner at equal odds to Jack's Legend (5). Ness has been competitive in optional claiming turf events and Sanchez handles these routes with confidence. At 4-1, this horse represents solid value if Siege Of Boston (2) is pressured early. Miranda Rights (1) at 5-1 for Michelle Nihei with D.E. Centeno is a horse that some handicappers believe is being underestimated.

Longshots

Regalo (6) at 6-1 for trainer Brittany Russell with Sheldon Russell represents the family barn operating today. Sky's Not Falling (8) at 8-1 for Emanuel Geralis with Hector Karamanos is a horse to include in exotic wagers at a price. Hardspun Reason (3) at 10-1 for Graham Motion with Jorge Ruiz is a notable price for a Motion-trained horse — Motion runners at double-digit odds in turf optional claimers are worth serious consideration given the trainer's exceptional turf record. Day And Age (4) at 15-1 for Todd Wyatt with Forest Boyce is a significant longshot but not without merit in a race where pace scenarios can create surprises.

Selections

Win: Siege Of Boston (2) Place: Jack's Legend (5) Show: Fuerteventura (7)

RACE 10 — Post (4:45) — 1980f | D | AO | OClm 55000b | BUN | Purse $56,000

A 1 3/16-mile optional claiming event on the dirt for open company. This is a companion feature to Race 9 in terms of purse value, and only five horses are entered — making this an unusually short field for a race of this caliber. With five horses, the wagering pools will be somewhat compressed, but the small field offers cleaner trips and more straightforward pace scenarios.

Race 10

Pace Analysis

Barbadian Runner (4) at 1-1 and Indy Charges On (1) at 2-1 dominate the morning line and figure to be the two primary contenders in what shapes up as essentially a match race with supporting cast. A genuine pace battle between these two at even money and 2-1 creates some interest in the third horse Margie's Fun Son (5) at 5-1 as a potential beneficiary. The 1 3/16-mile distance on dirt will test stamina and the horse with the superior pace figures and class should prevail.

Key Contenders

Barbadian Runner (4) at 1-1, trained by Henry Walters and ridden by Forest Boyce, is the heavy public choice. Even-money in a five-horse field speaks to dominant recent form. Walters has been successful at this optional claiming level and Boyce will have a straightforward trip from post 4 in a small field.

Indy Charges On (1) at 2-1 for trainer Anthony Farrior with Jose Vargas is the clear main danger. Farrior has horses ready to fire and Vargas has been productive at this meet. From the rail in a five-horse field at 1 3/16 miles, Indy Charges On (1) can rate off the pace and make a sustained run down the lane.

Secondary Choices

Margie's Fun Son (5) at 5-1 for Ronald Abrams with Andrew Wolfsont is the third choice and the best value play in the race. If Barbadian Runner (4) and Indy Charges On (1) engage in a pace duel, Margie's Fun Son (5) could sweep past both late. Abrams has shown an ability to place horses effectively in optional claiming routes.

Longshots

Union Fleet (2) at 12-1 for Jose Magana with Jean Gregor Briceno is a significant longshot in this short field. Briceno's presence keeps Union Fleet (2) alive in superfectas but little more. Crossland (3) at 15-1 for Kerry Hohlbein with Yomar Ortiz is a price play that would require significant upsets from the top choices.

RACE 11 — Post (5:16) — 1210f | T | CO | OClm 12500 | BUN | Purse $24,000

The day's finale is a 6-furlong optional claiming event on the turf for open company at the $12,500 level. Twelve horses entered. This is the largest field of the afternoon for a single-turn turf sprint, and it closes the card. Large fields in turf sprints are always tricky, with traffic and post position playing meaningful roles.

Race 11

Pace Analysis

Noble Jon (9) at 2-1 is the morning line favorite and likely the class of the field. Multiple early speed types in this 12-horse field suggest the pace will be contested, which could set up closers. Summer Bee (8) and Tough Workout (2) may also factor early. A hot pace in a turf sprint often results in a significant closer move, and bettors should watch for horses with late-running styles.

Key Contenders

Noble Jon (9) at 2-1 for trainer Emanuel Geralis and jockey Hector Karamanos is the deserving favorite. Geralis has been active today with multiple runners and clearly has the barn in good form. Karamanos is a capable pilot who handles turf sprints effectively. From post 9 in a full field, Noble Jon (9) will need a clean break to avoid early traffic.

Tough Workout (2) at 4-1 for Sarah White with Sheldon Russell is an interesting play at a fair price. WHITE has been developing this horse carefully and Tough Workout (2) from inside post 2 gets a good draw for a turf sprint. Russell's barn is also represented in Race 9 with Regalo (6).

Secondary Choices

Summer Bee (8) at 4-1 for Mike Dini with Mychel Sanchez is a live horse at a fair price. Dini has a solid record with turf sprinters at this level and Sanchez is capable of getting the most out of a horse in a sprint. Island D'lite (6) at 5-1 for Samuel Davis with Raul Mena represents a trainer who has shown he can develop sprint turf horses and Mena at 5-1 in the finale is a compelling value.

Transactional Guy (12) at 5-1 for Michael Jones Jr. with Jeiron Barbosa is a horse to take seriously at the price. Barbosa has been one of the sharper riders at the meet all day, and Transactional Guy (12) from the outside post 12 will need a clean early run to secure a good position. In a turf sprint, the outside post can actually be an advantage if the horse can establish position quickly along the fence.

Cut Glass (11) at 6-1 for Jonathan Maldonado with Jevian Toledo is a value play worth including on exotic tickets. Maldonado saddles Brighty (10) in Race 1 and if that runner fires, the barn is clearly in good form. Toledo at 6-1 on a turf sprinter is a play worth making.

Longshots

Turbulent Force (10) at 6-1 for Ben Feliciano Jr. with Jorge Ruiz is a horse some handicappers point to as a possible upset. Claudee Boy (5) at 12-1 for Hassan Elamri with Jean Gregor Briceno is worth a minor exotic inclusion given Briceno's productive day. Spotted Bull (1) at 15-1 for Robert Klesaris with Jose Vargas, Upsidedown Man (4) at 15-1 for Miguel Vera with Ismerio Villalobos, Bigdaddysboy (3) at 20-1 for Robert Gamber with J.S. Rocco Jr., and Tiz No Clown (7) at 20-1 with Tais Lyapustina face very long odds against the well-supported top choices. Spotted Bull (1) with Klesaris — a veteran trainer with deep turf experience — is the most interesting of the deep longshots.

Win: Noble Jon (9) Place: Summer Bee (8) Show: Transactional Guy (12)

Jockey Notes and Insights

Mychel Sanchez is among the most productive riders at Laurel Park this meet and has a full book of mounts today across multiple surfaces and distances. He picks up mounts in seven races including Bold Licorice (4) in Race 1, River City Runner (7) in Race 2, Stella Mars (10) in Race 3, Wickham Lane (5) in Race 7, Divine Works (4) in Race 8, Fuerteventura (7) in Race 9, and Summer Bee (8) in Race 11. His versatility and feel for the Laurel track — both dirt and turf — make any Sanchez mount worth considering, particularly at prices of 6-1 and above.

Jeiron Barbosa has been riding with authority at this meet and is worth following throughout the card. His key mounts include West Mountain (8) in Race 1, Hooraw (5) in Race 2, Don't Tell Kelly (4) in Race 3, Danni's Rhythm (10) in Race 6, Anita Beer (1) in Race 8, Siege Of Boston (2) in Race 9, and Transactional Guy (12) in Race 11. Multiple winning mounts would not surprise on a card this deep.

Jevian Toledo is riding at the upper end of the card's quality spectrum with mounts in Race 4 on Slewperstitus (6), Race 5 on Kelsey Hill Girl (1), Race 8 on She's Not A Lad (2), Race 9 on Jack's Legend (5), and Race 11 on Cut Glass (11). Toledo's presence on Slewperstitus (6) in Race 4 and Jack's Legend (5) in Race 9 are the most compelling opportunities.

Jean Gregor Briceno has a strong book with key assignments on Divine Swagger (2) in Race 2, Lyudmila (5) in Race 4, Skycross (9) in Race 7, Claudee Boy (5) in Race 11, and Union Fleet (2) in Race 10. His mount on Lyudmila (5) is the highest-profile assignment and the most likely winner of the group.

Jorge Ruiz rides Your Lordship (7) for the Motion barn in Race 7, which is a standout assignment. He is also up on Hardspun Reason (3) in Race 9 for Motion. With Motion's exceptional turf record, both mounts deserve attention regardless of odds.

Jose Vargas has a busy day with seven mounts spread across the card. His most notable assignments are Let Her Pass By (4) in Race 5 and Orator (8) in Race 7. The Orator (8) mount in the maiden special weight at co-2-1 is his top opportunity.

Raul Mena rides the key horse Brighty (10) in Race 1 and has Nancy Mary (7) in Race 8 and Island D'lite (6) in Race 11. If Brighty (10) wins to open the card, look for Mena and the Maldonado barn to stay hot.

Trainer Notes and Insights

Graham Motion stands out above all other trainers on today's card as the one trainer who can swing a result through reputation and expertise alone. His entries are Your Lordship (7) in Race 7 and Hardspun Reason (3) in Race 9. Both are turf route horses, both have Jorge Ruiz in the irons, and both deserve serious consideration regardless of odds posted at the windows. Motion's win percentage on turf routes at Laurel is among the highest of any conditioner in the mid-Atlantic region, and his horses routinely improve second start off a layoff or following a placement shift. Hardspun Reason (3) at 10-1 in Race 9 is an especially interesting value if the Motion barn has freshened this horse with today's race in mind.

Michael Trombetta is another conditioner whose horses at Laurel deserve automatic respect. He enters River City Runner (7) and Treasurthememories (6) in Race 2, and Divine Works (4) in Race 8. Trombetta's allowance runners at Laurel have an excellent conversion rate and Divine Works (4) in Race 8 at 6-1 is arguably the best value bet his barn offers today.

W. Robert Bailes has a broad presence on the card with Slewperstitus (6) in Race 4, Hollywood Mischief (12) in Race 5, and Danni's Rhythm (10) in Race 6. Bailes is an experienced conditioner who runs horses when they are ready, and Slewperstitus (6) with Jevian Toledo in Race 4 is his most prominent runner.

John Salzman Jr. is another trainer to watch, with Freedom Glider (9) in Race 1, Rerun Table (4) in Race 4, Weather Beater (9) in Race 5, and She's Not A Lad (2) in Race 8. Salzman's runners are consistently competitive and his four-pronged attack today suggests the barn is in good form.

Keri Brion enters Carloun (2) and Celtic Prince (12) in Race 1, and Red Rum Raisin (10) in Race 7. Having two live runners in Race 1 at identical 5-1 odds suggests the trainer may be genuinely uncertain which horse is sharper — or that both are equally well-intended. Brion's win percentage at Laurel this meet is solid.

Jamie Ness has a busy card with Stella Mars (10) in Race 3, Good Axe (6) in Race 5, Fuerteventura (7) in Race 9, and Island D'lite (6) in Race 11. Ness consistently runs horses in form and any of these four could contribute to the card's results.

James Toner's presence with Siege Of Boston (2) in Race 9 is the trainer angle of the afternoon in the feature turf route. Toner rarely ships a horse to Laurel without it being pointed specifically for the race, and Siege Of Boston (2) at 2-1 with Barbosa is the most formidable trainer-jockey combination on the entire card.

Best Wagering Strategies and Value Plays

The most compelling single-race value play on the card is Hardspun Reason (3) in Race 9 at 10-1. Graham Motion sending a turf router at double-digit odds with Jorge Ruiz aboard in an optional claiming race is a situation that has produced results repeatedly at this track and others. This horse deserves inclusion on every multi-race ticket and is a potential single-race value play in win wagering.

In Race 4, the structure is effectively a three-horse race. Lyudmila (5) at 1-1, Slewperstitus (6) at 2-1, and Rerun Table (4) at 3-1 cover the logical outcomes. A boxed exacta using all three combinations costs six dollars on a $2 base, and the exacta returns on any combination of these three should be meaningful given the short prices. This is a race to play on the undercard multi-race wagers rather than as a primary bet.

The Race 7 maiden special weight presents an excellent exotic opportunity. Your Lordship (7) and Orator (8) as co-2-1 favorites create a trifecta key situation: key both at the top, and use Lorraine (1), Boundless Skies (3), Wickham Lane (5), and Anytime (4) underneath. A Your Lordship (7)/Orator (8) with multiple underneath at modest cost could return significantly given the large number of longshots in the field.

For the Pick 4 spanning Races 8 through 11, the following structure represents strong value:

Race 8: NANCY MARY (7), SHE’S NOT A LAD (2), DIVINE WORKS (4)

Race 9: SIEGE OF BOSTON (2), JACK’S LEGEND (5), HARDSPUN REASON (3)

Race 10: BARBADIAN RUNNER (4), INDY CHARGES ON (1)

Race 11: NOBLE JON (9), SUMMER BEE (8), TRANSACTIONAL GUY (12), CUT GLASS (11)

This ticket covers 72 combinations at $0.50 per combination for a base cost of $36. Including Hardspun Reason (3) at 10-1 in Race 9 as a live spoke creates the possibility of a substantial return if the Motion runner fires, as the public will be routing through Siege Of Boston (2) and creating artificially low returns on the chalk combinations.

For daily double lovers, the Race 9 and Race 10 combination is worth playing. The co-feature races back-to-back present an opportunity: Siege Of Boston (2) in Race 9 with Barbadian Runner (4) in Race 10 is the chalk daily double, but pairing Jack's Legend (5) or Hardspun Reason (3) in Race 9 with Barbadian Runner (4) in Race 10 should return meaningful value given the medium-priced top of the first leg.

The best single-race win bets on the card, in order of conviction: Siege Of Boston (2) in Race 9, Your Lordship (7) in Race 7, and River City Runner (7) in Race 2, where the Trombetta-Sanchez combination at 3-1 in a maiden claimer represents a legitimate morning line value that often closes down at the windows.

Brighty (10) at 2-1 to open the card in Race 1 is a reasonable favorite to key in the exacta with Freedom Glider (9) on top and underneath. If the morning line holds, a $2 exacta with Brighty (10) and Freedom Glider (9) in both directions at an approximate combined cost of $4 offers a fair risk-to-reward profile to start the card.

Good luck at the windows this afternoon.
