Over the last several modern meets, Saratoga dirt has often tilted toward inside-to-middle posts in sprints, with tactical speed holding an advantage while deep closers need an honest or contested pace to get involved.

On the turf (T), Saratoga's layout and traditional summery footing generally favor stalkers and mid-pack runners who can quicken off the far turn, rather than need-the-lead types who are pressured early or one-run closers who start their rallies too far back. Wider, outside-to-middle posts in routes have been less of a liability here than at tighter ovals, but saving ground into the first turn still matters, so horses with enough tactical speed to secure a spot by the rail—then tip out in the lane—tend to perform best.
