Track Surface & Bias

Hawthorne's dirt (D) track is a one‑mile oval that historically plays fair to slightly speed‑favoring, especially when the surface is dry and tightly packed. Under typical summer conditions, inside to middle posts are acceptable, with a mild edge to forwardly‑placed runners (front‑runners and pressers) who can secure position into the first turn. When moisture is present and the track tightens, that speed bias can become more pronounced, while deep closers often need a strong pace collapse to get involved late.

The turf (T) course at Hawthorne tends to play more neutral to stamina‑favoring, rewarding stalkers and mid‑pack runners who can save ground early and produce a sustained run through the lane. On firm turf, middle posts generally offer the best blend of position and trip, while wide‑drawn runners can be disadvantaged at shorter distances that feature a quick run into the turn. If the turf has any give, the advantage often shifts further toward stalkers with strong late pace rather than pure front‑runners.

Handicapper’s Edge

Given Hawthorne's typical patterns, lean slightly toward speed and tactical speed on the dirt, especially in routes where securing early position is critical. On the turf, put extra emphasis on trip and versatility—horses that can sit just off the pace and finish strongly tend to capitalize best on Hawthorne's configuration and usual footing.
