Race Day Overview — Evangeline Downs, Saturday June 27, 2026

Evangeline Downs in Opelousas, Louisiana kicks off its Saturday evening card with nine races spanning a mix of turf and dirt surfaces, maiden special weights, maiden claimers, and claiming events. The card is headlined by Race 8, a $41,000 optional claimer on the turf for older horses, and Race 4, a $40,000 maiden special weight sprinter's showcase. The full card stretches deep into the evening, with first post at 6:30 PM local time and the final race going off just after 10:00 PM. Evangeline is a 5/8-mile oval that draws heavily from the Louisiana-bred horse population, supplemented by shippers from across the Gulf Coast region.

Saturday's card features a healthy mix of claiming and maiden races, providing multiple opportunities for exotic wagering. Several trainer and jockey combinations bear watching, and the turf course will likely see some pace-pressing scenarios given the tight turns of the Evangeline layout. Breeders' Cup-eligible Louisiana-breds fill out a number of these fields, and the late-evening timing of the card means the surface can play differently as dew settles and temperatures cool.

The card offers several compelling Pick 4 and Pick 5 sequences, particularly in the back half of the card, and sharp players will want to focus on the optional claiming and maiden special weight events where class evaluation and workout patterns can tilt the edge. As is typical at Evangeline on a summer Saturday, fields are competitive, and value exists throughout.

Weather and Track Conditions — Evangeline Downs, June 27, 2026

Opelousas, Louisiana sits in the heart of Acadiana, and late June means heat, humidity, and the ever-present threat of afternoon thunderstorms rolling in off the Gulf. Temperatures at post time are expected to be in the upper 80s Fahrenheit with humidity levels pushing into the 85-90% range. There is a moderate chance of scattered showers earlier in the afternoon, which could affect the main track surface heading into the evening card.

If any rainfall does occur prior to the evening card, the dirt track at Evangeline could be labeled good to sloppy depending on accumulation. The main track at Evangeline is a sandy loam surface that tends to favor speed when dry and rail-savers when wet, as the inside path can cup and become heavy after significant moisture. Horses with prior experience on an off track, or those bred for wet conditions, should receive a slight edge in the dirt sprints if the surface plays anything other than fast.

The turf course at Evangeline is a tight, short-stretch grass surface that historically favors horses that can rate off the pace. In humid conditions with the grass on the softer side, closers with tactical speed can find the late kick they need. Post position bias on the turf tends to favor middle posts at Evangeline on the outside rail, as the tight turns can cause traffic issues for horses drawn very wide in larger fields.

Track and Post Position Bias

At Evangeline Downs, the main dirt track is a compact 5/8-mile oval with a relatively short stretch run. This configuration consistently favors speed horses and front-runners, particularly in sprints at 1100 feet and 1320 feet. Horses that can secure a clean early position within the first two lengths of the leader are at a significant advantage over deep closers, who frequently find themselves without room to launch a winning bid through the short homestretch.

On the turf course, the bias shifts somewhat. The inside posts (1-3) can be advantageous in turf routes when the rail is open, but in fields of eight or more, posts 4 through 7 represent the sweet spot — wide enough to avoid early rail traffic while still positioned to save ground on the turn. Posts 8 and beyond on the turf at Evangeline can be problematic in fields exceeding nine horses, as the wide post means giving up early ground that is difficult to recover in the short stretch.

On the dirt, post position 1 has a reasonable record at Evangeline in maiden and claiming sprints because the rail path is often the fastest ground when the surface is fast and dry. However, in stretch-out routes at 1760 feet on the dirt, mid-range posts (3-6) tend to perform better, as horses have time to find their footing before the first turn.

RACE 1 — Post 6:30 PM — 1650f | T | C | Clm 20000n3l | Purse $24,000

This opening race is a 1650-foot turf claiming event restricted to horses that have not won three races, with a $20,000 claiming tag and a $24,000 purse. The field of ten includes a mix of types with varied turf experience. The distance, just over a mile on the grass, will reward horses with genuine turf stamina and the ability to rate in a tactical scenario. With ten horses going around the tight Evangeline turf course, jockeys securing early position without overcommitting will have a meaningful tactical advantage.

Race 1

Pace Analysis

With ten horses stretching out on the turf at 1650 feet, the pace picture is layered. Bons Temps Roule (1) figures to be the controlling speed from the rail if the early fractions suit his style. Same Play (9) is another prominent contender who is capable of pressing the pace from just off it. Jackson D (7) brings pace-pressing tendencies as well. The expectation is a moderately contested early pace, which should set up for a horse with a closing kick to make a late move. Horses that track in the second flight around four lengths off the leader will be ideally positioned heading into the far turn.

Key Contenders

Bons Temps Roule (1) is the morning line favorite at 2-1 and draws the rail in a turf route, which at Evangeline is not the liability it might appear. Trained by Juan A. Larrosa, who is one of the more capable conditioners in the Evangeline stable, and ridden by Carlos Perez, the track's leading jockey, this horse commands respect. The combination of Larrosa and Perez at a short price means the barn expects to compete. The rail post on the turf at 1650 feet at Evangeline is workable if the horse gets out cleanly, and this horse's form in the non-winners-of-three condition suggests he has been competitive at this level.

Same Play (9) opens at 3-1 and is trained by Jerry Delhomme with Jamison Mudd up. The post position is wide but manageable in a pace scenario where SAME PLAY likely has the tactical speed to find a comfortable stalking trip from the outside. At 3-1, this horse represents fair value if he can get cover from the start.

Jackson D (7) opens at 5-1 under Colby J. Hernandez for trainer Sturges J. Ducoing. Ducoing is a consistent presence at Evangeline, and 5-1 represents a workable price on a horse that should have tactical options from post 7 on the turf.

Secondary Choices

Skenes Crews (3) opens at 6-1 for trainer Allen Ray Landry with Jansen Melancon in the irons. Melancon is a key riding presence at Evangeline, and at 6-1 SKENES CREWS deserves consideration as a price horse in this spot, especially if the turf plays to a stalking pace.

Wayside Drive (8) comes back at 8-1 for trainer Joseph O. Duhon, with C.J. McMahon riding. Duhon runs two horses in this opening race, which occasionally reflects a barn that has strong opinions on one of its runners. The 8-1 price makes WAYSIDE DRIVE worth a second look.

Longshots

Single Shot (6) at 12-1 for trainer David Terre with Juan P. Vargas riding is a horse that can be included in exotic tickets as a throwback price. Go Get Trae (5) and Cool Guitar (10) both open at 15-1 for the Duhon and Alberto barns respectively. Robbiesstormangel (4) at 20-1 for Antonio Alberto and Harry Hernandez, and Imma Deal (2) at 20-1 for Ronnie Ward with Jose Luis Rodriguez, are deep lottery tickets that would require a troubled trip scenario to factor.

Betting Strategy

WIN: Bons Temps Roule (1) The favorite here is legitimate and the Larrosa/Perez combination gives confidence. Bons Temps Roule should be backed at the windows, though the 2-1 price limits profitability on straight win bets.

EXACTA: Bons Temps Roule (1) over Jackson D (7) and Same Play (9) represents the primary structure. A wide exacta using Same Play (9) on top back to Bons Temps Roule (1) provides an insurance angle.

TRIFECTA: Key Bons Temps Roule (1) on top, with Jackson D (7), Same Play (9), and Skenes Crews (3) for second and third to get value on the undercard.

Selections

Win: Bons Temps Roule (1) Place: Same Play (9) Show: Jackson D (7)

RACE 2 — Post 6:57 PM — 1430f | D | C | Clm 5000n2l | Purse $11,000

Race 2 drops down sharply in class to a $5,000 claiming event for horses that have not won two races on dirt at 1430 feet. The $11,000 purse reflects the lower tier of the Evangeline condition book, and these races frequently feature horses that have been placed strategically into their conditions. The 1430-foot distance is slightly longer than a sprint, which tends to separate the horses with some stamina from pure sprinters. On the main track, with a potential soft surface from earlier rainfall, route experience and wet-track ability could factor.

Race 2

Pace Analysis

Ry Ry (4) is the morning line favorite at 2-1 for Brett Brinkman and T.L. Pompell, and figures to be involved in the pace or stalking just behind it. Little Bit O Storm (3) and Educated Wish (6) both figure to press or contest the pace. R G Goldendream (8) at 3-1 is a closer who benefits from early pressure. If Little Bit O Storm (3) and Educated Wish (6) engage in a speed duel, R G Goldendream (8) could be the beneficiary swinging down the lane.

Key Contenders

Ry Ry (4) at 2-1 is the clear betting choice here, trained by Brett Brinkman with T.L. Pompell riding. Brinkman is a solid claiming trainer who understands conditions well, and at the n2l claiming level, dropping a horse to this tag often signals intent to win. Pompell is an experienced rider who handles the tight Evangeline turns effectively.

R G Goldendream (8) at 3-1 for Gary J. Husak with C.J. McMahon is the second choice. Husak is a journeyman conditioner who spots horses well, and R G GOLDENDREAM closing from behind in a pace-dependent scenario makes this horse dangerous. McMahon riding out of post 8 will need to avoid early traffic, but the closing style suits a pace scenario where the front runners tire.

Secondary Choices

Little Bit O Storm (3) at 4-1 for Joseph O. Duhon with Elio J. Barrera is a pace factor that cannot be ignored. Barrera is a capable young rider who has been building his book at Evangeline, and LITTLE BIT O STORM pressing the pace from post 3 gives him a manageable early position.

Educated Wish (6) at 4-1 for Chasey Deville Pomier with Harry Hernandez deserves consideration as well. Hernandez has been a regular presence in the Evangeline jockey colony, and at 4-1 this horse provides value if she can sustain her pace position through the stretch.

Longshots

Shining Away (5) at 6-1 for Juan A. Larrosa with Isaac Castillo gives Larrosa a live-looking price horse in this field. Quiet Melody (2) at 10-1 for Edith A. Mojica and Devin H. Magnon is a long shot worth including in wider trifecta spreads. What A Hangover (7) at 15-1 for Carl J. Woodley with Jamison Mudd is a deep price. Ifuaintfirsturlast (1) at 20-1 for Cesar Govea with Jose Luis Rodriguez is a lottery play.

Betting Strategy

This is a competitive lower-level claimer where the 2-1 favorite is solid but not overwhelming. The most efficient play is a trifecta using Ry Ry (4) on top, with R G Goldendream (8), Little Bit O Storm (3), and Educated Wish (6) filling out second and third. The exacta of Ry Ry (4) over R G Goldendream (8) is the value play.

Selections

Win: Ry Ry (4) Place: R G Goldendream (8) Show: Educated Wish (6)

RACE 3 — Post 7:24 PM — 1760f | T | M | Md 20000 | Purse $18,000

Race 3 is a maiden $20,000 claimer on the turf at 1760 feet, a full mile on the grass. This is a ten-horse field of maiden horses looking for their first career win, and the turf mile at Evangeline is a distance that rewards horses with measured early pace and a sustained closing move. Identifying horses with genuine maiden talent at the $20,000 claiming level on the turf is the central challenge here. The morning line shows a wide spread of prices, from 2-1 to 20-1.

Race 3

Pace Analysis

Struck Out (6) is the 2-1 morning line favorite for Emile Schwandt and Jamison Mudd. Regardsto Broadway (5) at 4-1 with Carlos Perez for Brett Brinkman figures to be involved early. Don Pablo (8) at 4-1 for Shelton Zenon with Elio Barrera is another horse that could press. At a mile on the turf with ten horses, the pace is likely to be contested early, which could play into the hands of a closer.

Key Contenders

Struck Out (6) at 2-1 is the dominant morning line choice trained by Emile Schwandt with Jamison Mudd up. At the maiden $20,000 level on the turf, a 2-1 favorite in a ten-horse field commands respect. Schwandt is a steady conditioner, and Mudd has been riding well recently at Evangeline. The question with any maiden at this level is whether the horse has demonstrated the class to justify the short price against a wide field.

Regardsto Broadway (5) at 4-1 for Brett Brinkman with Carlos Perez is a major threat. Brinkman is one of the sharper barns represented in this card, and putting Perez on a 4-1 shot in a maiden race signals a genuine attempt. The post 5 draw is ideal for a turf mile — wide enough to avoid rail traffic but close enough to save ground on the turns.

Secondary Choices

Don Pablo (8) at 4-1 for Shelton Zenon with Elio Barrera is priced identically to Regardsto Broadway (5). Barrera is capable of finding a comfortable stalking position from post 8, and DON PABLO deserves respect as a co-second choice. Smarty's Back (3) at 5-1 for Edith A. Mojica with T.L. Pompell offers value at a useful price. Mojica has been competitive with maiden turf runners at Evangeline.

Longshots

Yalla Vamos (10) at 8-1 for Keith Bourgeois with Colby J. Hernandez is the most interesting price horse in the field. Post 10 on the turf at 1760 feet is a challenging draw, but at 8-1 this horse offers genuine overlay potential if the race sets up with a contested early pace that brings closers into play. Lawless Ways (7) at 10-1 for Sturges J. Ducoing with C.J. McMahon is a second-tier price play. Regardless (4) at 15-1 for Alvin J. Romero with Isaac Castillo and Fulton (1) at 15-1 for Veronica Litfin with Devin Magnon are fringe players. My Leo (2) at 20-1 for Raul Quinones with Julio Ramirez Jr. and Charlie G T (9) at 20-1 for Lee Thomas with Jose Luis Rodriguez are deep tickets.

Betting Strategy

The 2-1 favorite Struck Out (6) is legitimate, but the price limits win-bet profitability. The smart play is the exacta using Regardsto Broadway (5) over Struck Out (6), or a trifecta keying Struck Out (6) on top with Regardsto Broadway (5), Don Pablo (8), and Smarty's Back (3) for second and third. Including Yalla Vamos (10) at 8-1 in trifecta tickets as a price threat adds upside.

Selections

Win: Struck Out (6) Place: Regardsto Broadway (5) Show: Don Pablo (8)

RACE 4 — Post 7:51 PM — 1320f | D | S | Md Sp Wt | Purse $40,000

Race 4 is the first of the card's signature events, a $40,000 maiden special weight at 1320 feet on the dirt. At Evangeline, the maiden special weight is the premier maiden condition, and a $40,000 purse draws the best first-time-out and lightly-raced horses the barn operators have to offer. Ten horses will contest this sprint, and the short 1320-foot distance means speed and early position are paramount. The rail is the most efficient path in a sprint at Evangeline, and post position advantage is significant.

Race 4

Pace Analysis

Cajun Cupid (9) is the 2-1 morning line favorite from the outside post 9, which creates a pace puzzle. Mo'z Star Sailor (5) at 4-1 and Maximus Amar (10) at 4-1 both figure to be involved early. Here Comes Benny (7) at 6-1 for Allen Ray Landry with Jansen Melancon is likely a pace stalker. The expected scenario has multiple speed horses in a contested sprint, which could compress the field into the far turn and create a scramble for position. If Cajun Cupid (9) gets shuffled wide from the outside post in the early going, the horse has legitimate talent to overcome the disadvantage, but the post is not ideal.

Key Contenders

Cajun Cupid (9) at 2-1 is the favorite despite the outside post draw. Samuel Breaux trains and Kelvin Arana rides. In maiden sprints at Evangeline, the morning line favorite at 2-1 in a maiden special weight typically reflects some combination of workouts and connections' expectations. Breaux is a prominent Evangeline trainer, and a 2-1 morning line at this level means the horse has shown something in the mornings. The post 9 in a 1320-foot sprint is a workable assignment if the horse has speed to clear early.

Mo'z Star Sailor (5) at 4-1 for Jervon Broussard with Rey Williams has the ideal post position draw, centrally located with a clear path to the inside on the first turn. At 4-1 with a favorable post, this horse is the primary danger to the favorite and could easily represent the best win value on the race.

Maximus Amar (10) at 4-1 for Ricky Courville with Emanuel Nieves draws the outside post 10. Two horses at 4-1 from posts 9 and 10 creates an interesting dynamic. MAXIMUS AMAR will need to work hard to find clean early running room from the extreme outside.

Secondary Choices

Here Comes Benny (7) at 6-1 for Allen Ray Landry and Jansen Melancon is a major second-tier play. Landry is a conditioner with a strong track record at Evangeline, and Melancon provides the experienced guiding hand needed for a maiden at this level. Post 7 is reasonable in a ten-horse sprint, and 6-1 represents genuine value.

Uninspired (1) at 10-1 for Juan A. Larrosa with Carlos Perez is a fascinating spot. Larrosa with Perez in post 1 of a maiden sprint — the rail post at Evangeline is historically productive in 1320-foot dirt sprints. The 10-1 price makes this a significant overlay if the horse has been working well. Minimus Maximus (4) at 12-1 for Ronnie Ward with Harry Hernandez is a mid-range price play.

Longshots

Moonlight Max (2) at 15-1 for Alan Klanfer with Isaac Castillo and Shred It Up (3) at 15-1 for Shelton Zenon with Colby J. Hernandez are horses that need pace help to factor. Golden Rush (6) at 20-1 for Rickey N. Castille with Theodrick Ledet and Rescue Squad (8) at 20-1 for Keven M. Williams with C. Fusilier are deep prices that serve better in wide trifecta and superfecta tickets than as standalone win plays.

Betting Strategy

The rail post on a maiden sprint at Evangeline creates real interest in Uninspired (1) at 10-1. Combining Cajun Cupid (9) and Mo'z Star Sailor (5) in an exacta box makes sense as the two primary contenders, with Here Comes Benny (7) and Uninspired (1) as trifecta fillers. The 4-1 morning line on Mo'z Star Sailor (5) given the favorable post draw suggests this horse may be undervalued at the current price.

Selections

Win: Cajun Cupid (9) Place: Mo'z Star Sailor (5) Show: Here Comes Benny (7)

RACE 5 — Post 8:18 PM — 1760f | D | C | Clm 5000b | Purse $11,500

Race 5 is a $5,000 claiming route at 1760 feet on the dirt, open to fillies and mares. This is a competitive seven-horse field where the $11,500 purse represents a modest step up from Race 2's conditions. At 1760 feet on the dirt, this is a route that will genuinely test stamina, and horses who have demonstrated the ability to sustain pace over a longer distance on the Evangeline main track will have an edge. Identifying a horse dropping into this condition who has genuine ability is the key angle in a race like this.

Race 5

Pace Analysis

Im Singled Up (7) is the 2-1 morning line favorite for Antonio Alberto with Harry Hernandez. Molto Vino (2) at 3-1 for John Bernard with Carlos Perez is the natural pressure horse. Rusty's Sunrise (4) at 4-1 for Isai V. Gonzalez with Jose Luis Rodriguez figures to be involved as well. The pace scenario shapes up as a contested route with multiple horses having something to say about the early fractions. A genuine pace scenario at 1760 feet on the dirt could open the door for Agami (5) or Good Bright Flames (6) to close from behind.

Key Contenders

Im Singled Up (7) at 2-1 is the dominant morning line choice trained by Antonio Alberto with Harry Hernandez up. Alberto has been a consistent presence at Evangeline, and IM SINGLED UP at the 5-1 odds favorite level suggests the barn expects to win. At 2-1 in a seven-horse field, the horse needs to run its race, but Alberto/Hernandez is a reliable combination at this level.

Molto Vino (2) at 3-1 for John Bernard with Carlos Perez is a live threat. Perez's presence on anything is a signal at Evangeline, and the 3-1 morning line in this spot suggests MOLTO VINO has the early speed to press from post 2 and possibly hold on through the long stretch run.

Secondary Choices

Rusty's Sunrise (4) at 4-1 for Isai V. Gonzalez with Jose Luis Rodriguez and Agami (5) at 5-1 for Roland Patt Jr. with Devin Magnon both represent second-tier value. AGAMI in particular could benefit from a hot early pace scenario, closing from mid-pack at 5-1 in a 1760-foot dirt route. Good Bright Flames (6) at 6-1 for Miguel Garcia with C.J. McMahon is the stalker type that rounds out the secondary selection pool.

Longshots

Craftroom (3) at 12-1 for Sarah Martinez with Elio Barrera and Talksalot (1) at 15-1 for Brent Toups with T.L. Pompell are fringe plays. TALKSALOT from the rail in a 1760-foot dirt route has the post position advantage but needs the pace to collapse entirely to factor at 15-1.

Betting Strategy

This is a relatively short field and the betting structure is straightforward. Im Singled Up (7) as the win bet, with Molto Vino (2) and Agami (5) underneath in exacta and trifecta combinations. The exacta of Molto Vino (2) on top of Im Singled Up (7) at a potential 6-1 or 7-1 return would be excellent value if MOLTO VINO can hold off the favorite.

Selections

Win: Im Singled Up (7) Place: Molto Vino (2) Show: Agami (5)

RACE 6 — Post 8:46 PM — 1760f | T | S | Md Sp Wt | Purse $32,000

Race 6 is the second maiden special weight on the card, this one on the turf at 1760 feet for fillies and mares. At a $32,000 purse, this is a meaningful grass maiden event that draws serious runners. Ten horses will contest the mile on the turf, and as with Race 3, patient pace stalkers and closers are favored at this distance around the Evangeline turf course. Post position analysis matters significantly here — middle draws are the sweet spot.

Race 6

Pace Analysis

Charging Ovatime (5) at 2-1 is the morning line favorite and figures to be involved at or near the front end. Lolo's Girl (1) at 3-1 for Keith Bourgeois with Colby J. Hernandez is a pace factor from the inside. Spare Me (8) at 4-1 for Alan Klanfer with Emanuel Nieves figures as a presser or stalker. If Charging Ovatime (5) and Lolo's Girl (1) battle early on the turf, it sets up beautifully for a horse like Ocean's Appeal (6) or Look At Me Nah (10) to come from mid-pack.

Key Contenders

Charging Ovatime (5) at 2-1 for Shane Wilson with Harry Hernandez is the dominant morning line choice. Wilson is a trainer who has had success with maiden turf fillies at Evangeline, and CHARGING OVATIME drawing post 5 gives Hernandez an ideal starting point for the mile on the turf. At 2-1 the favorite is appropriately priced if the horse has shown strong morning work.

Lolo's Girl (1) at 3-1 for Keith Bourgeois with Colby J. Hernandez is the primary threat. Bourgeois is a capable Louisiana conditioner, and Hernandez on the rail post in a turf mile creates an interesting dynamic. The inside post at 1760 feet on the Evangeline turf is manageable if the horse gets clean early position and saves ground throughout.

Secondary Choices

Spare Me (8) at 4-1 for Alan Klanfer with Emanuel Nieves is positioned well in the middle of a wide field for a turf mile. Nieves is a capable rider who can settle a horse in a stalking position, and at 4-1 SPARE ME is a legitimate second-tier play. Ocean's Appeal (6) at 6-1 for Randy J. Ellis with Javier Antonio Hernandez is a price horse worth including in exacta and trifecta tickets. Ellis is a solid trainer at this level, and 6-1 on the turf in a maiden special weight offers value.

Longshots

Look At Me Nah (10) at 8-1 for David Terre with Isaac Castillo is the most interesting longshot play in this field. Post 10 on the turf is a wide draw, but at 8-1 the price compensates for the disadvantage, and if the pace is honest, LOOK AT ME NAH could find room to close. Eskenforave And Ak (9) at 20-1 for Brett Brinkman with Carlos Perez is interesting because Brinkman/Perez is a winning combination, and the 20-1 price may be an overlay if the morning line was set conservatively. Above The World (4) at 12-1 for Alvin J. Romero with T.L. Pompell and Taste Of Freedom (7) at 12-1 for Isai V. Gonzalez with Efigenio Garcia Ruiz round out the field. Cowgirl Cool (2) at 15-1 for Scott Gelner with Edward Santiago and Sell The Buffalo (3) at 20-1 for Paul Duhon with Elio Barrera are extreme longshots.

Betting Strategy

The turf maiden special weight with two live favorites and a field of ten is an ideal trifecta race. Key Charging Ovatime (5) on top with Lolo's Girl (1), Spare Me (8), and Ocean's Appeal (6) for second and third. The exacta of Charging Ovatime (5) over Lolo's Girl (1) at a projected 4-1 or 5-1 is fair but not spectacular. The real value is a trifecta or superfecta that includes Look At Me Nah (10) and Eskenforave And Ak (9) as price horses in the back end.

Selections

Win: Charging Ovatime (5) Place: Lolo's Girl (1) Show: Spare Me (8)

RACE 7 — Post 9:13 PM — 1320f | D | M | Md 5000 | Purse $14,000

Race 7 is an eight-horse $5,000 maiden claimer on the dirt at 1320 feet. This is the bottom of the Evangeline condition ladder for maiden horses, and these fields often feature horses that have been going around the track for multiple starts without breaking through. Pace scenarios in maiden claimers at the bottom of the ladder can be chaotic, and early speed from the rail or mid-posts tends to hold at this level because competition fades quickly in the stretch.

Race 7

Pace Analysis

Samuel (6) is the 2-1 morning line favorite for Randy Degeyter Jr. with Jansen Melancon. One Grand Slam (8) at 3-1 for Mike Shamsie with T.L. Pompell is the co-primary contender. Man Of The Hill (1) at 4-1 for Lee Thomas with Jose Luis Rodriguez is a pace factor from the inside. Bellastone Country (7) at 4-1 for Juan Munoz Cano with Elio Barrera is a potential presser. This is a wide-open pace scenario in a maiden claimer where the early fractions will be unpredictable.

Key Contenders

Samuel (6) at 2-1 trained by Randy Degeyter Jr. with Jansen Melancon is the morning line choice. Degeyter is a regular Evangeline conditioner, and SAMUEL at 2-1 in a $5,000 maiden claimer suggests the horse has been competitive in workouts or showed something in prior starts. Melancon piloting from post 6 in a 1320-foot dirt sprint gives him a clean shot at finding position quickly.

One Grand Slam (8) at 3-1 for Mike Shamsie with T.L. Pompell is the second choice. Pompell is a steady rider who handles the Evangeline layout well, and ONE GRAND SLAM from the outside post 8 will need to run around horses to win. In a maiden claimer sprint, outside posts are a mild disadvantage, but 3-1 pricing suggests confidence from the connections.

Secondary Choices

Man Of The Hill (1) at 4-1 from the rail for Lee Thomas with Jose Luis Rodriguez is a significant post position advantage in a 1320-foot maiden sprint at Evangeline. Thomas is a consistent presence at Evangeline, and Rodriguez is one of the more experienced riders in the jock colony. At 4-1 from post 1, MAN OF THE HILL has genuine win potential.

Bellastone Country (7) at 4-1 for Juan Munoz Cano with Elio Barrera is the other 4-1 horse in the field. Barrera has been building his Evangeline presence, and BELLASTONE COUNTRY from post 7 is a manageable position in an eight-horse field.

Longshots

Closing Agent (4) at 8-1 for Chadwick J. Mouton with Julio Ramirez Jr. is a second-tier price play. Taurean (5) at 10-1 for Edith A. Mojica with Juan P. Vargas and Stanley Little Boy (3) at 15-1 for Joseph S. Boxie with Devin Magnon are fringe plays. Truvy's Hit (2) at 20-1 for Shelton Zenon with Jose Nava-Marin is a deep lottery.

Betting Strategy

The mild chaos of maiden claimers at the $5,000 level makes this race a trifecta target rather than a win-bet race. Key Samuel (6) and Man Of The Hill (1) in alternating win slots, with One Grand Slam (8) and Bellastone Country (7) filling the second and third positions in trifecta spreads.

Selections

Win: Samuel (6) Place: Man Of The Hill (1) Show: One Grand Slam (8)

RACE 8 — Post 9:40 PM — 1100f | T | AO | OClm 50000n2l | Purse $41,000

Race 8 is the featured event of the card, an optional $50,000 claimer for horses that have not won two races on the turf, restricted to older horses. The $41,000 purse is the richest of the evening, and the 1100-foot turf sprint is a sharp, tactical event where early turf position is everything. This is a ten-horse field with a fascinating morning line, headlined by a pair of co-favorites at 2-1 and 3-1.

Race 8

Pace Analysis

Hint Of Platinum (6) at 2-1 for Sturges J. Ducoing with C.J. McMahon is the dominant morning line choice. Lafitte's Legacy (8) at 3-1 for Sam B. David Jr. with Colby J. Hernandez is the co-primary contender. Dynamite Tonight (1) at 4-1 for Samuel Breaux with Harry Hernandez and Killer Guitar (5) at 4-1 for Samuel Breaux with Elio Barrera are two horses from the same barn, which creates a pacemaking dynamic. Having two Breaux barn horses in the same race suggests the trainer may have tactical flexibility, with one horse potentially used to set the pace for the other. The 1100-foot turf sprint at Evangeline is a tactical event, and early placement on the turf is decisive.

Key Contenders

Hint Of Platinum (6) at 2-1 for Sturges J. Ducoing with C.J. McMahon is the clear morning line choice. Ducoing is one of the more accomplished conditioners at Evangeline, and McMahon brings a strong book at the meet. The post 6 draw on the turf at 1100 feet is a workable position, and at 2-1, HINT OF PLATINUM is the horse to beat in the feature.

Lafitte's Legacy (8) at 3-1 for Sam B. David Jr. with Colby J. Hernandez is the main danger. David is a respected barn at the Louisiana meets, and LAFITTE'S LEGACY with Hernandez aboard from post 8 on the turf sprint will need to avoid early traffic while finding a stalking spot. At 3-1, the value is reasonable.

Secondary Choices

Dynamite Tonight (1) at 4-1 for Samuel Breaux with Harry Hernandez is a key secondary play. The rail post in an 1100-foot turf sprint is an asset if the horse has the tactical speed to secure it without being squeezed. Breaux running two horses at the same price (DYNAMITE TONIGHT at 4-1 and KILLER GUITAR at 4-1) is notable. Killer Guitar (5) at 4-1 with Barrera from post 5 has a better draw than Dynamite Tonight (1) and might actually be the preferred Breaux runner given the cleaner trip profile. Archtop (2) at 12-1 for Sam B. David Jr. with Isaac Castillo is a second barn entry for David alongside Lafitte's Legacy (8), giving David multiple live bullets.

Longshots

Mingling Mo (3) at 8-1 for Ronnie Ward with Carlos Perez is worth noting — Perez on anything at Evangeline warrants attention, and Ward occasionally fires a sharp horse in a spot like this. At 8-1, MINGLING MO could represent overlay value. Blackberry Crown (9) at 15-1 for Ronnie Averett with Kelvin Arana and Imperial Bandit (10) at 8-1 for Chasey Deville Pomier with Elio Barrera — note that Barrera is listed on both Killer Guitar (5) and Imperial Bandit (10), which may reflect a late jockey change on one of the two, worth monitoring at scratch time. Charlie Gamer (7) at 20-1 for Lee Thomas with Jose Luis Rodriguez and Go Easy (4) at 15-1 for Lee Thomas with T.L. Pompell round out the Thomas barn's representation in this feature.

Betting Strategy

The feature is a prime exacta and trifecta race. Key Hint Of Platinum (6) on top with Lafitte's Legacy (8), Dynamite Tonight (1), and Killer Guitar (5) filling out the undercard positions. The trifecta box of Hint Of Platinum (6), Lafitte's Legacy (8), and Killer Guitar (5) is an efficient play. Including Mingling Mo (3) as a price threat in wider tickets adds upside. Confirm the Barrera jockey situation between Killer Guitar (5) and Imperial Bandit (10) before finalizing wagers.

Selections

Win: Hint Of Platinum (6) Place: Lafitte's Legacy (8) Show: Killer Guitar (5)

RACE 9 — Post 10:07 PM — 1320f | D | M | Md 5000 | Purse $14,000

The card closes with a nine-horse $5,000 maiden claimer on the dirt at 1320 feet for males. These late-card maiden claimers at the bottom of the condition ladder often produce the widest results of any race on the card, and sharp bettors frequently find value by identifying a horse dropping into this condition for the first time with form above the level. The morning line has two co-favorites at 2-1 — Chief Dust Maker (7) and One Sure Hit (8) — which signals genuine uncertainty among the oddsmakers about who the best horse is.

Race 9

Pace Analysis

Mr Payroll (4) at 4-1 for Joseph O. Duhon with Alexis X. Batista figures to be a pace factor. Chief Dust Maker (7) and One Sure Hit (8) both come in as 2-1 co-favorites and likely have different pace styles. Straight Dropbilly (2) at 8-1 for Juan A. Larrosa with Carlos Perez is interesting given the Larrosa/Perez connection, and Azteca Storm (3) at 10-1 for Emile Schwandt with Kevin Roman could press from mid-pack. A pace-heavy sprint scenario is likely if multiple speed horses converge.

Key Contenders

Chief Dust Maker (7) at 2-1 for Ronnie Averett with Harry Hernandez is the co-morning line favorite. Averett also has Blackberry Crown (9) in Race 8, which suggests the barn is active on this card. CHIEF DUST MAKER at 2-1 in a $5,000 maiden claimer on the closing race of the night is a horse to respect from a speed-forward perspective.

One Sure Hit (8) at 2-1 for Sarah Martinez with Isaac Castillo is the other co-favorite. Martinez is a capable conditioner who has placed horses successfully at Evangeline, and ONE SURE HIT with Castillo from post 8 is a live outside post play in a nine-horse sprint. The 2-1 morning line match with Chief Dust Maker (7) creates an exacta that could produce a fair price.

Secondary Choices

Mr Payroll (4) at 4-1 for Joseph O. Duhon with Alexis X. Batista is the primary secondary play. Duhon is one of the most active trainers on this card, and a horse entering from post 4 in a 1320-foot sprint at Evangeline is well-positioned. Straight Dropbilly (2) at 8-1 for Juan A. Larrosa with Carlos Perez is a fascinating horse. The Larrosa/Perez combination producing a horse at 8-1 in a $5,000 maiden claimer on the final race of the night smells like a live overlay. This is worth monitoring for any morning line movement.

Longshots

Azteca Storm (3) at 10-1 for Emile Schwandt with Kevin Roman and Gallabye (9) at 12-1 for Roland Patt Jr. with Juan P. Vargas are second-tier prices. Oak Hill Boy (6) at 15-1 for Cesar Govea with Jose Luis Rodriguez is a fringe play. A Soldiers Pal (5) at 20-1 for Rickey N. Castille with Javier Antonio Hernandez and Pistol Ridge Kid (1) at 20-1 for Curley E. Fontenot with B.J. David are deep lottery tickets.

Betting Strategy

The co-favorite dynamic makes this an exacta and trifecta race. Box Chief Dust Maker (7) and One Sure Hit (8) in the exacta and add Mr Payroll (4) and Straight Dropbilly (2) in trifecta tickets. The Larrosa/Perez angle on Straight Dropbilly (2) at 8-1 in the closing maiden claimer is the most compelling price play on the final race of the card.

Selections

Win: Chief Dust Maker (7) Place: One Sure Hit (8) Show: Mr Payroll (4)

Jockey Notes and Insights

Carlos Perez is the premier rider at Evangeline Downs, and his presence on any horse should elevate that horse's assessment regardless of morning line. His mounts across this card include Bons Temps Roule (1) in Race 1, Regardsto Broadway (5) in Race 3, Uninspired (1) in Race 4, Molto Vino (2) in Race 5, and Straight Dropbilly (2) in Race 9. The last-race play on Straight Dropbilly (2) at 8-1 in Race 9 is particularly compelling. Perez closing out the card on a Larrosa barn horse in a bottom-level maiden claimer is a textbook Evangeline overlay situation.

Jansen Melancon is the second major riding presence on this card with mounts in Race 1 (SKENES CREWS, Post 3), Race 4 (HERE COMES BENNY, Post 7), and Race 7 (SAMUEL, Post 6). Melancon on Samuel (6) at 2-1 in Race 7 is the clearest signal that the horse is a genuine contender in the mid-card maiden claimer.

Elio Barrera is on multiple mounts throughout the evening, including Little Bit O Storm (3) in Race 2, Don Pablo (8) in Race 3, Craftroom (3) in Race 5, Sell The Buffalo (3) in Race 6, Bellastone Country (7) in Race 7, and Killer Guitar (5) in Race 8. The double-booking concern on Barrera between Killer Guitar (5) and Imperial Bandit (10) in Race 8 warrants monitoring at scratch time.

C.J. McMahon handles Wayside Drive (8) in Race 1, R G Goldendream (8) in Race 2, Lawless Ways (7) in Race 3, Good Bright Flames (6) in Race 5, and the feature mount Hint Of Platinum (6) in Race 8. The Race 8 mount on the 2-1 favorite in the card's richest race is McMahon's most important assignment of the evening.

Harry Hernandez rides consistently throughout the card, with mounts in Race 1 (ROBBIESSTORMANGEL, Post 4), Race 2 (EDUCATED WISH, Post 6), Race 4 (MINIMUS MAXIMUS, Post 4), Race 5 (IM SINGLED UP, Post 7), Race 6 (CHARGING OVATIME, Post 5), Race 8 (DYNAMITE TONIGHT, Post 1), and Race 9 (CHIEF DUST MAKER, Post 7). His mount on Charging Ovatime (5) at 2-1 in Race 6 and Chief Dust Maker (7) at 2-1 in Race 9 make him the co-favorite jockey of the evening.

Colby J. Hernandez rides Jackson D (7) in Race 1, Shred It Up (3) in Race 4, Lolo's Girl (1) in Race 6, and Lafitte's Legacy (8) in Race 8. His mount in the feature on Lafitte's Legacy (8) at 3-1 is his highest-profile assignment.

T.L. Pompell handles mounts in Race 2 (RY RY, Post 4), Race 3 (SMARTY'S BACK, Post 3), Race 5 (TALKSALOT, Post 1), Race 6 (ABOVE THE WORLD, Post 4), Race 7 (ONE GRAND SLAM, Post 8), and Race 8 (GO EASY, Post 4). His mount on Ry Ry (4) at 2-1 in Race 2 is arguably his most significant booking of the night.

Trainer Notes and Insights

Juan A. Larrosa stands out as the trainer with the most strategically placed horses on this card. He enters Bons Temps Roule (1) as the 2-1 morning line favorite in Race 1, Uninspired (1) at 10-1 from the rail post in Race 4, Shining Away (5) at 6-1 in Race 2, and Straight Dropbilly (2) at 8-1 in Race 9. The combination of Larrosa/Perez on multiple mounts, including the potentially underbet Straight Dropbilly (2) in the nightcap, makes Larrosa the most important trainer to track across this card.

Joseph O. Duhon is the most active trainer on the card by volume, entering Little Bit O Storm (3) in Race 2, Go Get Trae (5) and Wayside Drive (8) in Race 1, and Mr Payroll (4) in Race 9. The dual entry in Race 1 with Go Get Trae (5) and Wayside Drive (8) is a minor tactical note, but neither horse opens at odds that suggest stable confidence. Mr Payroll (4) at 4-1 in Race 9 is Duhon's most live-looking horse on the card.

Samuel Breaux trains the two co-favorites in Race 4 and Race 8. Cajun Cupid (9) at 2-1 in Race 4 and Dynamite Tonight (1) and Killer Guitar (5) as dual entries in Race 8 at 4-1 each give Breaux three of the most prominent horses on the second half of the card. When Breaux enters two horses in the same race at identical morning line prices, it typically suggests the trainer genuinely believes in both horses' chances, with no clear preference.

Brett Brinkman saddles three horses on the card: Ry Ry (4) at 2-1 in Race 2, Regardsto Broadway (5) at 4-1 in Race 3, and Eskenforave And Ak (9) at 20-1 in Race 6. Ry Ry (4) is the Brinkman barn's best shot of the evening.

Sam B. David Jr. runs Archtop (2) and Lafitte's Legacy (8) in Race 8's feature, giving his barn two arrows in the optional claimer. Lafitte's Legacy (8) at 3-1 is the preferred David runner given the morning line.

Lee Thomas enters horses in Race 3 (CHARLIE G T, Post 9), Race 8 (CHARLIE GAMER, Post 7, and GO EASY, Post 4), and Race 9 (MAN OF THE HILL, Post 1 in Race 7). Thomas's most interesting runner is Man Of The Hill (1) at 4-1 from the rail in Race 7, where the post position could make a meaningful difference.

Best Wagering Strategies and Value Plays

The signature value play of the card is Straight Dropbilly (2) at 8-1 in Race 9. The Larrosa/Perez combination on the closing race of the evening in a bottom-level maiden claimer is a classic Evangeline overlay situation. When the track's leading trainer puts the track's top jockey on a horse going off at 8-1 in a race where the co-favorites are at 2-1 apiece, there is meaningful overlay potential. Monitor the morning line movement on this horse, as any move toward 5-1 or lower confirms stable confidence.

The best straight win play of the card is Mo'z Star Sailor (5) at 4-1 in Race 4. In a $40,000 maiden special weight sprint, a horse with the ideal post position (5) at 4-1 who can press or clear early against a fragmented pace scenario involving multiple wide posts (9 and 10 for the two 4-1 co-favorites) represents genuine overlay value.

The feature race exacta in Race 8 — Hint Of Platinum (6) over Lafitte's Legacy (8) — should pay in the $8-12 range given the morning line prices. Consider boxing Hint Of Platinum (6), Lafitte's Legacy (8), and Killer Guitar (5) in the trifecta for a manageable investment with solid upside in the card's richest race.

For Pick 4 players, the most logical sequence on this card is Races 6 through 9. Using Charging Ovatime (5) and Lolo's Girl (1) in Race 6, Samuel (6) and Man Of The Hill (1) in Race 7, Hint Of Platinum (6) and Killer Guitar (5) in Race 8, and Chief Dust Maker (7) and Straight Dropbilly (2) in Race 9 creates a 2x2x2x2 combination of 16 tickets at a $0.50 base that covers the most logical combinations of the evening.

For the late Pick 3 (Races 7-8-9), a structure using Samuel (6) in Race 7, Hint Of Platinum (6) in Race 8, and Chief Dust Maker (7)/One Sure Hit (8)/Straight Dropbilly (2) in Race 9 provides multiple outs in the nightcap at a modest cost.

The deepest value exotic on the card involves the Race 4 and Race 6 maiden special weights. A double using Cajun Cupid (9) or Mo'z Star Sailor (5) in Race 4 over Charging Ovatime (5) in Race 6 is a strong two-race sequence that can be played at modest cost with a reasonable expected return given the morning line prices.

Race 8, the card's most prestigious event, is also the most suitable race for a superfecta play. The top four contenders — Hint Of Platinum (6), Lafitte's Legacy (8), Dynamite Tonight (1), and Killer Guitar (5) — boxed in a $0.10 superfecta (at 24 combinations) is an affordable way to attack the feature race's full depth.
