Pick Pony Track Condition Report — Delaware Park, July 17, 2026
Track Surface & Bias
With a continuation of the recent extreme heat and haze pattern in northern Delaware, the dirt (D) track is expected to play fast to good, with a tight, speed-favoring surface similar to mid-week conditions. Under these hot, mostly dry summer setups, Delaware Park's main track historically rewards front-runners and pressers, especially from inside to mid posts, while deep closers typically need a strong pace and clean trip to overcome the bias.
The turf (T) course should remain firm to good, with watering and maintenance aimed at preserving safe footing in the heat. Historically on days like this, Delaware's turf tends to favor stalking and mid-pack runners who can save ground early from inside-to-middle draws and quicken turning for home, while wide, late-charging trips are at a mild disadvantage. Smoke/haze and heat may slightly temper late kicks, subtly reinforcing the edge for horses with tactical speed and positional versatility.
Handicapper’s Edge
On the dirt, upgrade speed and tactical speed types drawn inside to mid-gate, particularly those with proven Delaware Park summer form and ability to maintain pace in hot conditions. On the turf, give a modest edge to stalkers from inside or middle posts who can sit just off the pace and finish on a firm, fast lane, while being cautious about horses that rely solely on wide, deep-closing trips.
