Pick Pony Track Condition Report — Del Mar Racetrack, July 25, 2026

Del Mar is expected to play fast on dirt and firm on turf, with dry summer conditions favoring efficient trips and reducing the likelihood of any meaningful surface deterioration during the card. On the dirt, that profile typically supports early speed and inside-to-middle posts, especially in sprints where horses that establish position quickly tend to hold an advantage.

On the turf, Del Mar's usual pattern is a tactical one: horses with enough speed to sit mid-pack and save ground often get first run, while pure deep closers are more dependent on pace and trip. With both surfaces generally favoring ground-saving trips, wide, looping moves are usually less effective than economical positioning through the turns.

For wagering, the edge is usually to upgrade forwardly placed runners on dirt and horses with tactical stalking ability on turf. In these conditions, handicapping often comes down to identifying who can secure a clean, efficient trip rather than relying on late rallying alone.
