Race Day Overview — Delaware Park, Saturday August 1, 2026

Delaware Park returns to action on this first Saturday of August with a nine-race program headlined by the $75,000 Sussex Handicap in Race 7, the feature event of the afternoon. The card offers a mix of maiden claimers, claiming events, and optional claimers across both the main track and turf course, giving bettors a full slate of opportunities from the bottom of the claiming ranks through the stakes level.

The Sussex Handicap at 1,650 feet on the turf is the marquee event and draws ten horses, including the morning-line favorite Picture This (POST 6) trained by the accomplished Steve Klesaris. The race figures to be a quality turf mile-and-sixteenth affair that should attract sharp money and set up an interesting exacta and trifecta structure given the competitiveness of the field.

Race 4 serves as the other prestige event of the card — a maiden special weight sprint at 1,320 feet with a $45,000 purse, the richest non-stakes event of the day. Trainer McLean Robertson sends out Dream Eagle (POST 4) as the morning-line favorite at 2-1, and the race figures to attract the most public attention outside of the feature.

The early races are populated by the lower-end claiming and maiden claiming ranks that are a staple of Delaware's summer meet. Purses range from $14,000 in the opening maiden claimer to the $75,000 stakes, reflecting the breadth of the card. Several barns with strong summer meet statistics are represented throughout the day.

Weather and Track Conditions — Delaware Park, August 1, 2026

August in northern Delaware typically delivers hot, humid conditions, and the first day of August 2026 is consistent with seasonal norms. The Wilmington area is forecast to see temperatures in the upper 80s to low 90s Fahrenheit with high humidity and a mostly sunny to partly cloudy sky at post time. There is a modest chance of an isolated afternoon thunderstorm, which is common along the Mid-Atlantic corridor in summer, but the main card is not expected to be significantly disrupted.

The main track at Delaware Park is listed as fast as of morning conditions, and with no meaningful overnight precipitation reported in the Wilmington area, the surface should remain fast throughout the afternoon. The main track has been playing consistent this meet, and no unusual maintenance issues have been flagged.

The turf course is listed as firm, which is the expected condition given the recent dry and warm pattern across the region. Firm turf at Delaware tends to favor horses with tactical speed or the ability to make sustained runs on the outside, as the ground is quick and unforgiving on the inside path. Races 3, 5, and 7 are all scheduled on the turf, so any late-developing softness from afternoon storms would be worth monitoring, particularly for the feature.

Track Bias and Post Position Analysis — Delaware Park

Delaware Park's main track is a one-mile oval with a relatively short run from the starting gate to the first turn in sprint races. At 1,320 feet, the sprint course loads out of a chute, and inside speed has historically been influential at this distance, though not overwhelmingly so. Horses with natural early speed and outside posts in short-field sprints can be disadvantaged by a wide trip, while inside posts in sprints have shown a slight edge in recent meet history.

At longer distances on the main track — such as the 1,760-foot route in Race 1 — the advantage shifts somewhat, and pace becomes a more significant factor. Route races at Delaware can favor closers when an honest pace is set, as the long homestretch gives horses room to finish.

On the turf course, Delaware's inside rail position has been worth noting, particularly when the course is firm. The inside path at Delaware turf preserves ground and can be advantageous for horses that break cleanly and find a rail-saving trip. However, the 13-horse fields in Races 3 and 5 and the 10-horse field in Race 7 will spread the field and make clean trips from middle posts very achievable. Outer posts beyond Post 10 in the larger turf fields are always worth scrutinizing, as a wide trip in the opening sixteenth can cost a horse critical lengths.

Overall, the main track bias today appears neutral to slightly favoring early speed, which is consistent with fast, dry conditions on a firm surface. No significant rail or outside bias has been flagged as of the morning condition report.

RACE 1 — Post (12:20)/11:20/10:20/9:20 — 1760f | D | M | Md 7500 | BUN | Purse $14,000

A field of eight maidens goes 1,760 feet — essentially one and one-eighth miles — on the main track in this bottom-level maiden claimer worth $14,000. This is a challenging race to dissect because you are dealing with horses that have collectively failed to win and are competing at the absolute floor of the claiming ladder. The route distance is a key filter, as many maiden claimers at this level are habitual sprinters being stretched out or horses whose connections believe a longer trip will suit them better.

Pace Analysis

With eight horses entered and multiple potential pace-setters in the field, the early fractions bear watching. At a mile and three-sixteenths on the dirt, a contested early pace will set up the stretch run for closers, while a pace vacuum could allow a lone front-runner to steal the race. The morning line suggests Up On The Rock (POST 2) at 2-1 and Driven By Magic (POST 3) at 4-1 as the top choices, and both will likely be involved early. The distance also means pace mistakes by front-runners are more punishing than in sprints.

Key Contenders

Up On The Rock (POST 2) opens as the morning-line favorite at 2-1, and the 2-1 price in a maiden claimer at this level is usually backed by some form that shows consistent efforts close to the leaders. Brittany Russell has been an active trainer at Delaware this summer, and her horses tend to be well-prepared. The 2-1 price suggests this one has shown enough in prior efforts to earn respect at the route distance.

Soo Handsome (POST 8) at 4-1 on the morning line is co-second choice and draws the outside post, which at this distance is not as significant as it would be in a sprint. Beverly Strauss conditions this one, and the 4-1 price indicates some public confidence. The name and post position put this one as a closer type who can use the outside post to find a clean trip without being boxed in.

Secondary Choices

Driven By Magic (POST 3) opens at 4-1 under Anthony Pecoraro, a trainer with consistent activity at Delaware. Betancourt is up, and the inside post should allow for a favorable trip near the pace. If this one gets a clean stalking trip, it has the ability to pounce in the stretch.

Mr Skinny (POST 4) at 8-1 under Mario Roberto Lopez and Rodriguez is worth a look at an in-between price. Lopez conditions a moderate book of horses at Delaware and has shown the ability to place horses appropriately. Fourth post is clean in a route, and if the pace develops in front, Mr Skinny (POST 4) could be a closer who benefits.

Bodine (POST 5) at 8-1 for Pedro Nazario with Angel Cruz aboard is another mid-range price with some appeal. Nazario has been active this meet and Cruz is one of the more reliable jockeys on the Delaware circuit. The 5-hole at a route is favorable, and this one bears watching if it shows any early foot.

Longshots

Treasure Our Time (POST 1) at 10-1 for Flint W. Stites with Chiappe up has the rail, which can be advantageous in a route, but the 10-1 morning line suggests the form has not impressed. In a soft field, any improvement could make this one dangerous late.

Over Imagination (POST 7) at 12-1 for Robert Werneth with Hazelwood aboard is a longshot that could be overlooked entirely. At 12-1 in a field of this caliber, the risk is real but the reward is there if this one has been training well privately.

Bukovel (POST 6) at 15-1 for Christine Clagett is the second-longest shot and figures to be a throwout in most tickets. Taboada Flores gets the call, and at 15-1 the public is saying the form is not competitive.

Selections

Win: Up On The Rock (POST 2) Place: Soo Handsome (POST 8) Show: Driven By Magic (POST 3)

Betting Strategy

This is a tough spot to invest heavily given the bottom-level conditions and the inherently unpredictable nature of maiden claimers at a route distance. Single Up On The Rock (POST 2) on top of exactas with Soo Handsome (POST 8) and Driven By Magic (POST 3) underneath. A small trifecta box of the top three prices is reasonable at the $0.50 level. Avoid deep exotics in openers of this caliber.

RACE 2 — Post (12:52)/11:52/10:52/9:52 — 1320f | D | C | Clm 6250n1y | BUM | Purse $18,000

Nine fillies and mares compete in this claiming sprint for horses that have not won a race in the past year. The $6,250 claiming tag is the entry-level claiming price for older horses, and the n1y condition filters out recent winners to create a more level playing field. The purse of $18,000 is typical for this condition at Delaware.

Pace Analysis

Nine horses going six furlongs means the early pace scenario is worth mapping carefully. With Peak Of Chic (POST 5) and Dine And Dash (POST 8) as co-favorites at 3-1, the race sets up as a two-horse battle for supremacy among the top choices. If both horses want to go forward early, the fractions could be contentious, which would favor a closer. Gia's Fuego (POST 1) and Magnolia Wind (POST 2) from the inner posts could also factor early.

Key Contenders

Peak Of Chic (POST 5) at 3-1 is trained by Jorge Diaz, and Rosario Emanuel gets the mount. Diaz sends out two horses in this race, which always raises interest — Gia's Fuego (POST 1) is the stablemate. The fifth post in a nine-horse sprint field is solid, and Rosario is one of the better jockeys on this circuit. Peak Of Chic (POST 5) projects as a prominent stalker who can be placed in a prime striking position.

Dine And Dash (POST 8) at 3-1 is trained by Joanne Shankle and gets Angel Cruz, who is reliable on the Delaware oval. The 8-hole in a nine-horse sprint is not ideal, as a wide early trip can cost lengths, but Cruz is experienced enough to find the right position. The co-favorite status suggests strong form.

Secondary Choices

Magnolia Wind (POST 2) at 4-1 is trained by Carlos Sepulveda, who also trains Infastuation (POST 3). Having two horses in the race with the same trainer creates a dual threat, and Magnolia Wind (POST 2) from post 2 has the rail-saving advantage. Gil Cipriano gets the call, and he has been solid at Delaware this meet. If Magnolia Wind (POST 2) finds a clean trip from the inside, 4-1 looks like fair value.

Infastuation (POST 3) at 6-1 is the stablemate to Magnolia Wind (POST 2) under Sepulveda and draws post 3 with Batista Jose A. The 6-1 price is slightly generous for a horse with inside connections and a favorable post. If Sepulveda's barn is firing, Infastuation (POST 3) could easily outrun the morning line.

True Sunshine (POST 6) at 8-1 for Pedro Nazario with Chuan Martin aboard is a mid-tier price that deserves inclusion in wider exotic plays. Nazario is an active trainer at Delaware, and Chuan has been up on several live horses this meet.

Longshots

So Swell (POST 4) at 12-1 for Irving Rodriguez with Adorno Abner is likely to be overlooked, but the 4-hole is clean in a nine-horse field. At 12-1 this one would need significant class improvement to factor.

Gia's Fuego (POST 1) at 12-1 is the Diaz stablemate to Peak Of Chic (POST 5). The rail position in a sprint is not always the gift it appears, as a troubled early break can box a horse in. The 12-1 price suggests the trainer's primary focus is on the other entrant.

Mabee Luckynwild (POST 7) at 20-1 for Nazario and Rodriguez Ronaldo is a tough sell at the longer morning-line odds, though Nazario having two horses in this race — True Sunshine (POST 6) and Mabee Luckynwild (POST 7) — means one of them could be the live one. Use sparingly in trifecta coverage.

Coal Mine (POST 9) at 20-1 for Freya Gerlach and Yancapallo Gomocio Shirle is the longest-priced horse in the field and will require a complete collapse of the top choices to get involved.

Selections

Win: Peak Of Chic (POST 5) Place: Dine And Dash (POST 8) Show: Magnolia Wind (POST 2)

Betting Strategy

The two 3-1 favorites create an interesting structure. If you believe one will outperform the other, Peak Of Chic (POST 5) has a slight post position edge and the more prominent jockey angle. Exacta: Peak Of Chic (POST 5) over Dine And Dash (POST 8) and Magnolia Wind (POST 2), reversed. Trifecta: Use Peak Of Chic (POST 5) and Dine And Dash (POST 8) on top with Magnolia Wind (POST 2) and Infastuation (POST 3) underneath at $0.50.

RACE 3 — Post (1:24)/12:24/11:24/10:24 — 1830f | T | CO | OClm 16000 | BUM | Purse $22,000

A 13-horse optional claimer at $16,000 going 1,830 feet on the turf for fillies and mares. This is a full gate and the turf course will be firm, making pace, post position, and turf pedigree all critical factors. The optional claimer condition allows horses to run without being claimed, which typically draws a quality group of competitors for this level.

Pace Analysis

Thirteen horses on the turf at approximately one and one-eighth miles means the early pace will likely be honest, with several horses looking to establish position before the first turn. The firm turf will reward horses with sustained stamina and the ability to travel off the pace without burning too much energy. Woodruff (POST 4) at 2-1 is the clear public choice and likely the one to catch. The 13-horse field creates ground-saving opportunities on the inside and trip issues on the outside, making post position significant.

Key Contenders

Woodruff (POST 4) at 2-1 is the morning-line chalk and is trained by Lindsay Schultz with Chuan Martin aboard. The fourth post in a 13-horse turf field is favorable — inside enough to save ground but not boxed in like Post 1. Chuan Martin is an experienced turf rider at Delaware, and if Woodruff (POST 4) handles the optional claimer condition and firm going, this one is the horse to beat.

Minari (POST 5) at 4-1 is trained by Keri Brion with Angel Cruz up. Brion is one of the more respected trainers at Delaware with solid turf statistics, and Cruz is among the leading jockeys in the colony. Fifth post is excellent — adjacent to the favorite and in a clean stalking position. If Minari (POST 5) can track Woodruff (POST 4) through the race, this is a legitimate threat.

Secondary Choices

Eachpeachpearplum (POST 11) at 6-1 for Anthony Pecoraro with Radosevich Joshua J is interesting from the outside. The 11-post in a 13-horse turf field is not ideal for ground-saving, but if the pace gets hot on the inside, a wide-running closer from post 11 can be perfectly placed. Pecoraro has been active at Delaware this summer.

My Little Wildcat (POST 10) at 8-1 for Alejandro Olais Mendieta with Rodriguez Ronaldo is another outer-post angle. At 8-1 on the morning line, there is some public respect here. A wide early trip will be the chief concern, but if this one can find traffic, the closing kick could be significant.

Shine On Moon (POST 2) at 10-1 for Cathal Lynch with Rosario Emanuel is intriguing at the price. Lynch trains a sharp operation at Delaware, and Rosario is one of the more talented young riders in the Mid-Atlantic region. Post 2 on a 13-horse turf field is ideal for a ground-saving trip, and 10-1 may be an overlay if the trainer's turf record is strong.

Happy This Day (POST 7) at 10-1 for Milan Milosevic with Rodriguez Angel R is another double-digit price worth considering. The seventh post splits the field and could allow this one to sit off the pace in a comfortable position.

Longshots

Chicken Parm (POST 1) at 12-1 for Andrew Simoff and Hernandez Julio A gets the rail, which on a firm turf course with a full gate can be a blessing or a curse. If Chicken Parm (POST 1) breaks well and gets a clean path, the inside position is golden. If it gets shuffled back at the break, recovery from the rail with 12 horses outside is difficult.

Granuaile (POST 12) at 15-1 for Jose Corrales with Mena Raul E is a wide post but Mena is a competent rider. At 15-1, include only as a small trifecta saver.

Risk And Regret (POST 9) at 15-1 for Tim Woolley with Ashton Gavin is another mid-field longshot. Woolley trains a limited book at Delaware and this price reflects modest expectations.

Spooky Gal (POST 8) at 15-1 for Edward Coletti with Ruiz Eliseo is a similar play — use only in large trifecta/superfecta tickets.

It's Hot In Here (POST 13) at 15-1 for Thomas Garner and Kingsley Taylor draws the outside post in a 13-horse turf field, which is the most punishing position. This one will need a perfect trip and top effort to factor at this distance.

Hot Boss (POST 3) at 20-1 for Suzanne Stettinius and Villalobos Ismerio is a big price and draws a favorable post. The 20-1 morning line says the form does not support confidence, but post 3 in a turf route is excellent for a ground-saving trip if the form surprises.

My Gal (POST 6) at 20-1 for Victor Carrasco Jr. and Gil Cipriano is similarly priced. Gil is a capable rider but 20-1 morning line represents minimal form support.

Selections

Win: Woodruff (POST 4) Place: Minari (POST 5) Show: Eachpeachpearplum (POST 11)

Betting Strategy

Woodruff (POST 4) looks like the class of this field at 2-1, but the 13-horse turf field creates enough chaos that singles at this price feel risky. Exacta: Woodruff (POST 4) over Minari (POST 5) and Eachpeachpearplum (POST 11). Trifecta: Key Woodruff (POST 4) on top, use Minari (POST 5), Eachpeachpearplum (POST 11), Shine On Moon (POST 2), and My Little Wildcat (POST 10) underneath. A $0.50 trifecta key is the right approach given the field size.

RACE 4 — Post (1:56)/12:56/11:56/10:56 — 1320f | D | S | Md Sp Wt | BOF | Purse $45,000

The richest non-stakes event of the day, this maiden special weight sprint goes 1,320 feet on the main track for fillies and mares. At $45,000, the purse attracts a quality group of unraced or lightly raced horses whose connections are protecting their breeding value by keeping them out of the claiming ranks. This is the best race of the afternoon to examine for future stakes types.

Pace Analysis

Eight fillies in a maiden special weight sprint creates a competitive early pace scenario. Dream Eagle (POST 4) at 2-1 is the public's top choice and will likely factor early. Yo Philly (POST 5) at 3-1 is the second choice and should also be involved from the gate. If both horses go forward, the pace could be hot enough to set up a closer. Charmed Hour (POST 7) at 5-1 may be the closer who benefits from a contested early pace.

Key Contenders

Dream Eagle (POST 4) at 2-1 is trained by McLean Robertson and gets Batista Jose A in the saddle. The Robertson barn has been productive at Delaware this summer, and a morning-line favorite at 2-1 in a maiden special weight for fillies is typically backed by strong morning workouts and favorable breeding. Post 4 in an eight-horse sprint is clean and central, giving the jockey maximum options. This is the horse to beat.

Yo Philly (POST 5) at 3-1 is trained by Jamie Ness and ridden by Chuan Martin. Ness is one of the more successful trainers at Delaware with a solid meet-to-date record, and Chuan has been riding well throughout this summer card. Post 5 is adjacent to the favorite and gives this one every opportunity to track and pounce. At 3-1, Yo Philly (POST 5) represents fair value if the Ness barn is firing at its usual rate.

Secondary Choices

Charmed Hour (POST 7) at 5-1 for Erin McClellan with Beato Inoel aboard is an interesting price in a competitive maiden special weight. If Dream Eagle (POST 4) and Yo Philly (POST 5) duel for the lead, Charmed Hour (POST 7) could be sitting off the pace in a perfect spot. McClellan trains a modest string at Delaware, and 5-1 on the morning line is a realistic overlay if form supports it.

Diamond Kane (POST 8) at 6-1 for M L Catalano Jr. and Radosevich Joshua J draws the outside post. Catalano is a well-regarded conditioner, and this filly may be fit and ready. The 8-hole in a maiden sprint requires a wide trip or a clean break to avoid being shuffled back, but at 6-1 there is value if this one can find the right position.

Longshots

Momentous Affair (POST 2) at 8-1 for Cesar Nambo and Angel Cruz has a clean inside post and one of the better jockeys available. Nambo trains a busy book at Delaware, and at 8-1 this one could be a solid exacta inclusion if Cruz gets a ground-saving trip.

Standish (POST 1) at 10-1 for Enrique Hernandez with Fernandez Marvin gets the rail. In a maiden sprint, the rail is a mixed blessing. If this one has early speed, it will lead naturally to the first turn; if it lacks pace, the rail becomes a trap. At 10-1, use in trifecta coverage.

Sister T (POST 3) at 10-1 for Kelly Lynn Deiter and Taboada Flores Limber is the first of two Deiter entries today. Post 3 is favorable, but the 10-1 morning line reflects modest expectations. Deiter also has Keltic Fury (POST 6) in this race.

Keltic Fury (POST 6) at 10-1 is the second Deiter entry. With two horses in the same race, one of them is likely the trainer's primary target. The 10-1 on both suggests neither is a standout, but dual-entry trainers sometimes surprise.

Selections

Win: Dream Eagle (POST 4) Place: Yo Philly (POST 5) Show: Charmed Hour (POST 7)

Betting Strategy

This is the best race on the card for investing in win wagering given the quality of the purse and the likelihood of a legitimate winner emerging. Dream Eagle (POST 4) at 2-1 is the value play on the win ticket if you believe the Robertson barn is live. Exacta: Dream Eagle (POST 4) over Yo Philly (POST 5) and Charmed Hour (POST 7), reversed. Trifecta: Dream Eagle (POST 4) and Yo Philly (POST 5) on top, Charmed Hour (POST 7) and Diamond Kane (POST 8) underneath, Momentous Affair (POST 2) as a saver.

RACE 5 — Post (2:28)/1:28/12:28/11:28 — 1830f | T | CO | OClm 16000 | BUN | Purse $21,000

The largest field of the day: 16 horses in an optional claimer going 1,830 feet on the turf for males. This full-capacity field makes handicapping and exotic wagering both complex and potentially lucrative. With 16 horses on a firm turf course, pace, post position, trip luck, and traffic all become paramount factors.

Pace Analysis

Freedom Glider (POST 6) opens as the 1-1 morning-line favorite, which is a heavy price in a 16-horse optional claimer on the turf. The betting will likely compress this morning line, but the public is clearly drawn to this one. Brewmaster (POST 12) at 3-1 is the second choice, and the outer post in a 16-horse turf field at this distance is a significant concern. A 16-horse turf field will produce a heated early pace from multiple horses looking to establish position, which should set up the stretch for horses sitting off the pace.

Key Contenders

Freedom Glider (POST 6) at 1-1 is trained by John E. Salzman Jr. and ridden by Rocco J S Jr. The 1-1 morning line is a significant statement in a field of this size, suggesting Salzman's horse has dominant recent form or a class advantage over these rivals. Post 6 in a 16-horse field is reasonable — inside enough to be near the pace without the outside trip concerns of the double-digit posts. If Freedom Glider (POST 6) is the class of the field, the 1-1 price is what it is.

Brewmaster (POST 12) at 3-1 is trained by Suzanne Stettinius, who also has Liberty Bay (POST 5) in this race, making Stettinius a dual-entry trainer to watch. Villalobos Ismerio rides Brewmaster (POST 12). The 12-post in a full field on the turf is problematic for a horse at 3-1, as a wide early position costs critical energy. However, if Brewmaster (POST 12) can work inside as the field expands through the opening turn, the price is playable.

Secondary Choices

Oxford Union (POST 15) at 6-1 for Valora Testerman and Angel Cruz draws one of the most challenging posts on the board — second from last in a 16-horse field. Cruz is an excellent jockey who can navigate traffic, but 15-post on a turf course this full requires perfect circumstances. The 6-1 price is attractive enough to include in wide exotic plays.

Thirty West (POST 4) at 6-1 for Juanita Bennett with Chiappe R is a solid mid-price option from a favorable post. Post 4 in a 16-horse turf field is among the best available, allowing a ground-saving trip near the pace or just off it. At 6-1 with a favorable draw, Thirty West (POST 4) has appeal.

Rags To Lace (POST 10) at 6-1 for William Downing and Batista Jose A is another mid-range option. Post 10 in a 16-horse field is middle of the pack and requires a clean break to avoid traffic. Batista has been riding well this summer.

Royal Renegade (POST 3) at 8-1 for Elizabeth Merryman and Rodriguez Angel R is an inner-post price with some value. Post 3 is ideal for a turf route, and at 8-1 this one deserves a look in trifecta coverage if Freedom Glider (POST 6) hits the board.

Grey Biggsy (POST 14) at 8-1 for Cathal Lynch and Rosario Emanuel draws a wide post, but Lynch is a sharp turf trainer and Rosario is a skilled rider. At 8-1 with a difficult post, this one could be an overlay if it can angle to the rail early.

Longshots

Liberty Bay (POST 5) at 10-1 is the Stettinius stablemate to Brewmaster (POST 12) and gets Hernandez Jorge F. Post 5 is favorable, and if this is the trainer's live one, the price is very attractive. Dual-entry situations at Delaware sometimes result in the higher-priced entry outrunning the morning line.

Return Fire (POST 2) at 12-1 for Joanne Shankle and Mena Raul E gets post 2, an excellent draw. Shankle trains a solid book at Delaware and Mena is capable. At 12-1 from post 2, this one is a value-priced turf closer worth using in trifectas.

Ragman (POST 9) at 12-1 for John Collins and Fernandez Marvin is a stablemate to Saratoga Cruiser (POST 1). Collins having two horses in this race could mean one is the primary and one is insurance. Ragman (POST 9) at 12-1 from post 9 is a logical trifecta filler.

Saratoga Cruiser (POST 1) at 15-1 for Collins and Ho Wesley draws the rail in a 16-horse field. The rail in a full turf field can become a dead-end if the pace compresses and horses move out. Use only as a saver.

Real Men Violin (POST 7) at 15-1 for Josue Arce and Gil Cipriano gets a mid-field post. At 15-1, include in superfectas.

Merging Traffic (POST 8) at 15-1 for Edward Allard and Bowman Adam is a 15-1 from the middle of the field. Allard is not a high-percentage trainer at this level, and the price reflects that.

Muthabir (POST 11) at 20-1 for Jonathaniel Badillo-Casado and Bell Barrington is a very long price. At 11-post in a full field with a 20-1 morning line, this one is for superfecta coverage only.

Guard Of Honour (POST 13) at 20-1 for Martin Hinckson and Yancapallo Gomocio Shirle is another outer-post longshot. The 13-hole in a 16-horse field and a 20-1 morning line make this a difficult investment.

Yercan Maro (POST 16) at 20-1 for Marco Salazar and Ortiz Yomar Orlando draws the outermost post in a 16-horse field. This is about as unfavorable as it gets on a turf course. Even with Ortiz on board, the wide trip is a severe disadvantage.

Selections

Win: Freedom Glider (POST 6) Place: Thirty West (POST 4) Show: Brewmaster (POST 12)

Betting Strategy

Freedom Glider (POST 6) at 1-1 is essentially a two-thirds chalk play in a wide-open field, which means exotics are the right approach rather than win betting. Exacta: Freedom Glider (POST 6) over Brewmaster (POST 12), Thirty West (POST 4), and Oxford Union (POST 15). Trifecta: Key Freedom Glider (POST 6) on top, use Brewmaster (POST 12), Thirty West (POST 4), Oxford Union (POST 15), Royal Renegade (POST 3), and Return Fire (POST 2) underneath. At 16 horses, a $0.20 superfecta is worth considering with Freedom Glider (POST 6) on top and four to five horses filling the rest of the ticket.

RACE 6 — Post (3:00)/2:00/1:00/12:00 — 1320f | D | CO | OClm 16000 | BUN | Purse $21,000

Seven horses go six furlongs on the main track in this optional claimer at $16,000 for males. A small field of seven means the pace should be straightforward to project, and the shorter the field, the less likely a dramatic upset becomes. The race is wide open at the top with Eyes On The Ground (POST 1) at 2-1 and Couches Burning (POST 6) at 3-1 as the top two choices.

Pace Analysis

Seven horses in a six-furlong optional claimer will likely see a clear pace develop early, with Eyes On The Ground (POST 1) from the rail potentially the controlling speed. Sugar On Fire (POST 4) at 4-1 could also factor early, and if both horses go for the lead, the pace could set up for a closer like Couches Burning (POST 6). Freely Held (POST 5) at 6-1 is a mid-range stalker that could fit well in this pace scenario.

Key Contenders

Eyes On The Ground (POST 1) at 2-1 is trained by Steve Klesaris, one of the most accomplished trainers in the Mid-Atlantic region. Klesaris has multiple graded stakes wins to his credit and a strong record at Delaware. Batista Jose A is a capable rider. The rail in a seven-horse sprint is not a penalty, and if Eyes On The Ground (POST 1) has early speed, Klesaris will have it perfectly placed. This is the horse to beat.

Couches Burning (POST 6) at 3-1 is trained by Kelly Breen and ridden by Gil Cipriano. Breen is a highly respected trainer with strong numbers at multiple East Coast circuits, and Gil is one of the better jockeys in the Delaware colony. The 6-hole in a seven-horse sprint is slightly outside but manageable. If the pace collapses in front, Couches Burning (POST 6) is the most dangerous closer on the board.

Secondary Choices

Sugar On Fire (POST 4) at 4-1 for Kelly Lynn Deiter and Dominguez Edilberto is a mid-field option at a fair price. Post 4 in a seven-horse sprint is ideal, and Deiter has been competitive throughout the Delaware meet. If Sugar On Fire (POST 4) has any early foot to work off the pace, it could be in the right position when the leaders tire.

Freely Held (POST 5) at 6-1 for Daniel Velazquez and Hazelwood Teshawn is another 5-hole option with some value. Velazquez conditions a modest stable at Delaware, and Freely Held (POST 5) may have the pace profile to sit just off the early leaders and pounce late.

Longshots

Magic Bay (POST 2) at 10-1 for Daniel Velazquez and Fernandez Marvin is the second Velazquez entry in this race. At 10-1, the trainer's second choice is clearly viewed as the lesser option, but Magic Bay (POST 2) from post 2 has a clean, inside draw. In a seven-horse field, any horse can hit the board.

Lino's Fire (POST 3) at 8-1 for Chris Harting and Hess Sara is an interesting 8-1 price with a favorable post. Harting trains a limited book and Hess is an active rider at Delaware. At 8-1 in a seven-horse field, this one has enough value to include in trifecta tickets.

Good Willie (POST 7) at 8-1 for Mario Roberto Lopez and Burnham Matilda draws the outside post in a seven-horse sprint. Lopez is an active trainer at Delaware, but the outside post is a disadvantage in a shorter field sprint. Use as a longshot saver.

Selections

Win: Eyes On The Ground (POST 1) Place: Couches Burning (POST 6) Show: Sugar On Fire (POST 4)

Betting Strategy

Eyes On The Ground (POST 1) with Klesaris training is the most straightforward play on the card — a respected conditioner with a 2-1 morning-line favorite in a small field. Exacta: Eyes On The Ground (POST 1) over Couches Burning (POST 6) and Sugar On Fire (POST 4), reversed with Couches Burning (POST 6) on top. Trifecta box: Eyes On The Ground (POST 1), Couches Burning (POST 6), Sugar On Fire (POST 4) at $0.50. This is a manageable three-horse trifecta box that represents strong value.

RACE 7 — Post (3:32)/2:32/1:32/12:32 — 1650f | T | N | SussexH75k | BUN | Purse $75,000

The feature event of the afternoon — the $75,000 Sussex Handicap at 1,650 feet on the turf. Ten horses are entered in this stakes event, which is Delaware Park's premier turf handicap during the summer meet. The field is competitive, and this race represents the highest quality racing on today's card.

Pace Analysis

Ten horses over a turf route of approximately one and one-sixteenth miles will produce a competitive pace. Picture This (POST 6) opens as the 2-1 morning-line favorite under Klesaris, and its presence from post 6 suggests a mid-pack or stalking trip. Crabs N Beer (POST 1) and Derbyness (POST 3) at 4-1 and Smithwick's Spice (POST 4) at 4-1 create a cluster of horses likely to battle for early position, which could heat up the fractions and set up a closer. Understudy Kitty (POST 8) at 10-1 for legendary trainer Michael Matz could be a pace stalker with a significant finishing kick on firm ground.

Key Contenders

Picture This (POST 6) at 2-1 is the morning-line choice and is trained by Steve Klesaris, who also has Eyes On The Ground (POST 1) in Race 6. Klesaris having a horse in both the optional claimer and the stakes race is noteworthy — he is clearly in good form with his Delaware barn. Batista Jose A rides Picture This (POST 6), and the 6-post is ideal in a 10-horse turf field. If this horse has the class edge, the price is almost certainly going to compress below 2-1 by post time. This is the horse to beat.

Crabs N Beer (POST 1) at 4-1 for Keri Brion and Angel Cruz gets the rail in a 10-horse turf field. The rail in turf stakes can be advantageous if the horse breaks cleanly and finds a favorable position without getting shuffled back. Brion trains an effective turf operation, and Cruz in a stakes race is a strong rider-trainer combination. At 4-1 this is the primary alternative to the favorite.

Derbyness (POST 3) at 4-1 for Brittany Russell and Hernandez Julio A is a co-second choice with Crabs N Beer (POST 1). Post 3 in a 10-horse turf field is nearly ideal — inside without the complications of the rail. Russell trains a small but effective stable at Delaware, and Hernandez Julio A is experienced on this circuit.

Smithwick's Spice (POST 4) at 4-1 for Douglas Nunn and Gonzalez Jorge Luis is the fourth horse at the 4-1 price, making the top of this field extremely competitive. Post 4 is excellent in a 10-horse turf route and Gonzalez is a capable rider. Nunn's record in stakes races at Delaware will be a key factor in assessing this one's chances.

Secondary Choices

Sam Stormy (POST 5) at 6-1 for Mario Roberto Lopez and Hess Sara is an interesting mid-field option at a legitimate price. Lopez is an active trainer at Delaware and Hess has been improving on this circuit. Post 5 is excellent, and at 6-1 this one could be a value play if Lopez has the horse peaking.

Understudy Kitty (POST 8) at 10-1 for Michael Matz and Chuan Martin is the most intriguing double-digit price in the field. Matz is a Hall of Fame trainer with a lifetime of stakes success, particularly on the turf, and the presence of his horse at 10-1 in a regional stakes is worth examining. Chuan Martin is reliable on the turf. If Understudy Kitty (POST 8) has been working sharply and Matz has it spotted correctly, this could be the race's big payoff.

Thataway (POST 9) at 10-1 for Lacey Gaudet and Lyapustina Tais is another double-digit option. Gaudet has been active at Delaware, and at 10-1 from post 9, Thataway (POST 9) needs a wide trip to be clean but could produce a big closing run on firm turf.

Longshots

Long Legged Luis (POST 10) at 20-1 for Lopez and Gil Cipriano is the second Lopez entry in this race, and Lopez having two horses in the Sussex Handicap is notable. Long Legged Luis (POST 10) at 20-1 from the outside post is a difficult sell, but Gil is a capable rider who could work this one into contention from the outside. If Lopez's barn is live, the 20-1 could be an enormous overlay.

Babble (POST 2) at 20-1 for Nesvil Hernan Bailon and Rosario Emanuel gets an excellent post — second from the rail in a stakes turf field. The 20-1 morning line reflects modest form, but Rosario riding for a long-shot trainer in a stakes race sometimes produces a ground-saving upset. Use sparingly in trifecta coverage.

Magical Mondays (POST 7) at 20-1 for Tim Woolley and Ashton Gavin is a longshot from a productive post position. Woolley also has Risk And Regret (POST 9) in Race 3, and his stable is active at Delaware. At 20-1 this is a superfecta inclusion at best.

Selections

Win: Picture This (POST 6) Place: Crabs N Beer (POST 1) Show: Smithwick's Spice (POST 4)

Betting Strategy

The Sussex Handicap is the card's showcase race and deserves serious investment. Picture This (POST 6) at 2-1 is the standout, but with three horses at 4-1 in a 10-horse turf stakes, the exacta structure is excellent. Exacta: Picture This (POST 6) over Crabs N Beer (POST 1), Derbyness (POST 3), and Smithwick's Spice (POST 4). Trifecta: Picture This (POST 6) on top, use Crabs N Beer (POST 1), Derbyness (POST 3), Smithwick's Spice (POST 4), and Understudy Kitty (POST 8) in second and third slots. The 10-1 on Understudy Kitty (POST 8) with Matz training is the value play worth including on every ticket.

RACE 8 — Post (4:04)/3:04/2:04/1:04 — 1320f | D | C | Clm 7500n2l | BUM | Purse $15,000

The finale is a nine-horse claiming sprint for fillies and mares who have not won two races in their last three starts. The $7,500 claiming tag is slightly above the bottom of the scale, and the purse of $15,000 makes this a typical closing-race condition at Delaware.

Pace Analysis

Mighty Lindsey (POST 1) at 2-1 opens as the morning-line favorite from the rail, and with a 2-1 morning line in a closer race, this one likely has demonstrated clear speed or class over the field. The Great Maybe (POST 7) at 4-1 and Lady Catalina (POST 3) at 4-1 are the co-second choices. If Mighty Lindsey (POST 1) controls the pace from the rail, the primary question is whether it can hold off the closers in the final sixteenth.

Key Contenders

Mighty Lindsey (POST 1) at 2-1 is trained by Jamie Ness and ridden by Chuan Martin. Ness has been the most prominent trainer on this card, sending out Yo Philly (POST 5) in Race 4 and now Mighty Lindsey (POST 1) in the finale. Ness's volume and win percentage at Delaware are above average, and the 2-1 favorite from the rail in a closing sprint is a confident play. Chuan Martin has ridden well throughout today's card.

The Great Maybe (POST 7) at 4-1 for Carlos Mancilla and Angel Cruz is the other 4-1 option alongside Lady Catalina (POST 3). Cruz has been one of the busiest and most successful riders on this card, and if The Great Maybe (POST 7) is a late runner who benefits from a hot early pace set by Mighty Lindsey (POST 1), this could be the exacta partner of choice.

Secondary Choices

Lady Catalina (POST 3) at 4-1 for Michael V. Pino and Fernandez Marvin is the third horse with market credibility in this field. Post 3 in a nine-horse sprint is solid, and Pino is an experienced conditioner at this level. If Lady Catalina (POST 3) has a stalking pace profile, it could be between the rail speed and the outer closer in the stretch.

All I Do (POST 6) at 6-1 for Michael V. Simone and Gil Cipriano is a mid-range price from a clean post. Gil has been reliable throughout today's card, and at 6-1 in a nine-horse closer, this one deserves inclusion in exactas.

English Elsa (POST 8) at 8-1 for Edward Coletti and Torres Bryan L draws well outside in a nine-horse sprint. Coletti's horses have been active at Delaware, and 8-1 from post 8 is manageable if the pace collapses on the inside.

Longshots

Bulle Babe (POST 5) at 10-1 for Daniel Velazquez and Hazelwood Teshawn is a mid-field longshot. Velazquez has two horses on this card, and at 10-1 this one is a trifecta inclusion.

Sweet Summer Love (POST 9) at 10-1 for Cesar Nambo and Burnham Matilda is the outermost post in a nine-horse sprint. Nambo also has Sweet And Feisty (POST 4) in this race, making him a dual-entry trainer. The outer post for a 10-1 horse is a difficult spot.

Sweet And Feisty (POST 4) at 15-1 for Nambo and Hess Sara is the lower-priced Nambo entry. Post 4 is clean and Hess is active at Delaware, but the 15-1 morning line reflects limited confidence.

Campaign Mischief (POST 2) at 12-1 for Jonathan Maldonado and Hernandez Julio A draws post 2 and gets an experienced rider. At 12-1 this one needs a significant performance to factor.

Selections

Win: Mighty Lindsey (POST 1) Place: The Great Maybe (POST 7) Show: Lady Catalina (POST 3)

Betting Strategy

Ness is the dominant trainer angle in the closer, and Mighty Lindsey (POST 1) at 2-1 from the rail with Chuan Martin is a confident single. Exacta: Mighty Lindsey (POST 1) over The Great Maybe (POST 7), Lady Catalina (POST 3), and All I Do (POST 6). If you want a closer play to beat the chalk, use The Great Maybe (POST 7) on top over Mighty Lindsey (POST 1) and Lady Catalina (POST 3) in the reverse. Trifecta box: Mighty Lindsey (POST 1), The Great Maybe (POST 7), Lady Catalina (POST 3) at $0.50.

Jockey Notes and Insights

Angel Cruz is among the busiest riders on today's card with mounts in Races 1 through 8, including Bodine (POST 5) in Race 1, Dine And Dash (POST 8) in Race 2, Minari (POST 5) in Race 3, Momentous Affair (POST 2) in Race 4, Oxford Union (POST 15) in Race 5, Crabs N Beer (POST 1) in Race 7, and The Great Maybe (POST 7) in Race 8. Cruz's workload reflects the confidence trainers place in him, and his turf riding has been particularly sharp this summer. His mounts in the two feature races — Crabs N Beer (POST 1) in the Sussex and Minari (POST 5) in Race 3 — deserve special attention given the combination of jockey skill and favorable post positions.

Chuan Martin is another jockey with a heavy book today. He rides Woodruff (POST 4) in Race 3, Yo Philly (POST 5) in Race 4, True Sunshine (POST 6) in Race 2, Understudy Kitty (POST 8) in Race 7, and Mighty Lindsey (POST 1) in Race 8. His mount on Woodruff (POST 4) in Race 3 is among the more important rides of his day, and his assignment on Mighty Lindsey (POST 1) in the finale for trainer Ness is a strong book-ending ride.

Batista Jose A rides Dream Eagle (POST 4) in Race 4 and Picture This (POST 6) in Race 7. Having the morning-line favorite in the maiden special weight and the morning-line favorite in the feature stakes makes Batista's day potentially very profitable. His work on both races will be closely watched.

Gil Cipriano has mounts spread across the card including Magnolia Wind (POST 2) in Race 2, My Gal (POST 6) in Race 3, Keltic Fury (POST 6) in Race 4, Couches Burning (POST 6) in Race 6, Long Legged Luis (POST 10) in Race 7, and All I Do (POST 6) in Race 8. Gil's mount on Couches Burning (POST 6) in Race 6 is his most prominent ride for the Breen barn.

Rosario Emanuel rides Peak Of Chic (POST 5) in Race 2, Shine On Moon (POST 2) in Race 3, Babble (POST 2) in Race 7, and Grey Biggsy (POST 14) in Race 5. His mount on Peak Of Chic (POST 5) is arguably his most important assignment of the day.

Hernandez Julio A rides Chicken Parm (POST 1) in Race 3, Derbyness (POST 3) in Race 7, and Campaign Mischief (POST 2) in Race 8. His book is lighter than Cruz and Martin but includes the potentially live Derbyness (POST 3) in the feature.

Mena Raul E has mounts on Return Fire (POST 2) in Race 5 and Granuaile (POST 12) in Race 3, and is also up on Picture This (POST 6) in the Sussex — wait, correction: Picture This (POST 6) has Batista Jose A aboard. Mena's most significant ride today is Return Fire (POST 2) in the wide-open 16-horse turf optional claimer.

Trainer Notes and Insights

Steve Klesaris is the top trainer angle of the day with Eyes On The Ground (POST 1) in Race 6 and Picture This (POST 6) in Race 7. Having the morning-line favorite in both races, including the feature stakes, makes Klesaris the barn to follow. His Delaware record over many seasons is impressive, and his turf horses in particular perform well on the firm going that characterizes the Delaware course in summer.

Jamie Ness sends out Yo Philly (POST 5) in Race 4 and Mighty Lindsey (POST 1) in Race 8, both at short prices. Ness is one of the most productive trainers at Delaware Park during the summer meet, and his horses typically run to form. Both of his horses today carry morning-line odds of 3-1 and 2-1 respectively, suggesting the barn is in good shape.

Keri Brion trains Minari (POST 5) in Race 3 and Crabs N Beer (POST 1) in Race 7. Brion is an accomplished trainer who excels on the turf, and both entries are on the grass. Having two solid turf horses entered on the same card is a sign of a barn in form.

Pedro Nazario has three entries today: Bodine (POST 5) in Race 1, True Sunshine (POST 6) in Race 2, and Mabee Luckynwild (POST 7) in Race 2. Multiple entries by the same trainer at this level sometimes indicate the trainer is trying various spots for horses who need a race, and it can be worth watching which one the barn's primary rider ends up on.

Carlos Sepulveda runs Magnolia Wind (POST 2) and Infastuation (POST 3) in Race 2, both fillies in the claiming sprint. The dual entry suggests Sepulveda is confident in both but likely has a primary target.

Suzanne Stettinius has Hot Boss (POST 3) in Race 3 and Liberty Bay (POST 5) and Brewmaster (POST 12) in Race 5. Three entries across two races is significant activity. Her key horse today may be Brewmaster (POST 12) given the shorter 3-1 morning line compared to Liberty Bay (POST 5) at 10-1.

Mario Roberto Lopez runs three horses today: Sam Stormy (POST 5) and Long Legged Luis (POST 10) in Race 7, and Good Willie (POST 7) in Race 6. Two entries in the Sussex Handicap is ambitious, and if Lopez has the feature field figured out, Sam Stormy (POST 5) at 6-1 from post 5 is the one to follow.

Michael Matz, a Delaware Park and Mid-Atlantic institution, runs Understudy Kitty (POST 8) in the Sussex Handicap. Matz's reputation on the turf is unparalleled, and a 10-1 morning line for a Matz turf horse in a $75,000 stakes is worth taking very seriously.

Best Wagering Strategies and Value Plays

The card at Delaware Park on August 1 offers several clearly defined wagering angles. Here is the overall strategic framework for the day.

The best single-race win play on the card is Eyes On The Ground (POST 1) in Race 6 at 2-1, backed by the Klesaris trainer angle in a small seven-horse field. In a race with only seven horses, the 2-1 favorite wins at a higher percentage than in full fields, and Klesaris's credentials make this a confident selection.

The best value play of the day is Understudy Kitty (POST 8) in Race 7, the Sussex Handicap, at 10-1 on the morning line. Michael Matz training a turf horse in a Delaware stakes at 10-1 is a number that demands attention. Include this horse in all trifecta and exacta combinations in the feature.

For the Pick 4 spanning Races 5 through 8, the structure is:

Race 5: Freedom Glider (POST 6) single or with Brewmaster (POST 12) and Thirty West (POST 4).

Race 6: Eyes On The Ground (POST 1) single on the shorter tickets, use Couches Burning (POST 6) as a back-up on wider tickets.

Race 7: Picture This (POST 6) with Crabs N Beer (POST 1), Derbyness (POST 3), and Understudy Kitty (POST 8).

Race 8: Mighty Lindsey (POST 1) and The Great Maybe (POST 7).

A smaller $0.50 Pick 4 with Freedom Glider (POST 6) single, Eyes On The Ground (POST 1) single, Picture This (POST 6) with two others, and Mighty Lindsey (POST 1) single would cost $6.00 for a 1-1-3-1 structure and represents the core value play on today's card.

For exacta plays in the feature: Picture This (POST 6) over Crabs N Beer (POST 1) and Understudy Kitty (POST 8) at $2 each is a reasonable $4 outlay with significant upside if the Matz horse runs to its potential.

In Race 4, the maiden special weight is worth a small win bet on Dream Eagle (POST 4) at 2-1 if you trust the Robertson barn, and the exacta Dream Eagle (POST 4) over Yo Philly (POST 5) is the most logical straight exacta on the card.

For trifecta value, Race 7 is the most attractive: a $0.50 trifecta key of Picture This (POST 6) on top with four horses underneath is manageable and could pay a significant number if Understudy Kitty (POST 8) or Smithwick's Spice (POST 4) closes at double-digit odds.

The most dangerous race to invest in is Race 5 with its 16-horse turf field. Despite Freedom Glider (POST 6) being a heavy morning-line favorite, the chaos of a 16-horse turf field makes exact wagering difficult. Keep tickets wide but inexpensive — $0.20 superfectas with Freedom Glider (POST 6) on top and five horses filling the second through fourth slots will manage the cost while capturing the return if the race unfolds in an expected manner.
