Track Surface & Bias

With a dry, warm afternoon and light sea breeze, the dirt (D) surface should play fast to honest, without the deep, tiring feel you sometimes see after rain or heavy maintenance. Historically on days like this at Del Mar, pace-pressers and stalkers sitting just off the lead have a slight edge, while pure speed can still carry in shorter sprints if the early fractions are not contested. The rail and inside posts are generally fair to slightly favorable in sprints, while two-path and outside stalking trips can be advantageous in routes where riders can stay in rhythm and avoid traffic.

The turf (T) course under dry, sunny conditions typically plays firm, favoring tactical speed and forward, ground-saving trips, especially at the classic mile and 8.5-furlong configurations.
