Track Surface & Bias

With Dirt (D) and Turf (T) on the card, the main question is how much moisture reaches the racing surfaces. At Churchill Downs, a sealed or moisture-affected dirt track typically helps speed and forwardly placed runners, especially if the rail is good and the track is tight early in the program; when the surface dries and becomes more cuppy, stalkers often gain the most leverage. On turf, a little give usually favors tactical speed and stalkers over deep closers, while inside-to-middle posts tend to be the most efficient unless the rail is off or the course is heavily used.

Handicapper’s Edge
