Concerns first surfaced in early September, when Mott reported that Sovereignty had developed an abscess in his left hind foot and would miss at least one scheduled workout at Saratoga's Oklahoma Training Track. At that point connections described his chances of making the Gold Cup as roughly “50-50,” with the colt placed on the walk list while the foot drained and dried out. As the missed training time accumulated and a second planned breeze was scrapped, Mott acknowledged that the colt would not be ready to run a demanding ten-furlong race in just a matter of days, leading to the final call to skip Belmont's opening-day Grade 1.
