Race Day Overview — Churchill Downs, Wednesday, September 16, 2026

Churchill Downs returns to midweek action on Wednesday, September 16, presenting a full 9-race card highlighted by a pair of maiden special weight sprints that will draw significant attention from serious handicappers and casual fans alike. The card leans heavily toward dirt action, with claiming races at multiple levels anchoring the early card before a pair of $92,000 maiden sprint tests headline the afternoon. The allowance feature in Race 8 at 1-5/16 miles rounds out a competitive Wednesday program.

The shadow of jockey Florent Geroux's serious riding accident last Thursday at Churchill Downs continues to hang over the Twin Spires. Geroux remains in the ICU at the University of Louisville Hospital following the incident. His agent Matt Nakatani confirmed as of Monday that Geroux is “under great care,” but the community remains on edge. His absence from today's card is felt, and bettors should note that several horses who may have been in line to have Geroux up have turned to replacement riders. Bettors should scrutinize jockey switches throughout today's card with that backdrop in mind.

Also noteworthy is the broader Churchill Downs spotlight, as the September meet is now in full swing following the opening weekend that saw Salahudin (Zedan Racing, trained by Chad Brown) take the Grade III Iroquois Stakes on Saturday, September 13, and High Speed Reed earn TDN Rising Star honors beneath the Twin Spires. The track is active, recently maintained, and will see a competitive mid-week card.

Handicappers note that Marcus Hersh of the Daily Racing Form has flagged Race 6 as his best bet of the day on this card, a piece of intelligence worth building your wagering strategy around as we work through the analysis below.

Weather and Track Conditions — September 16, 2026

Louisville, Kentucky is experiencing typical mid-September conditions with a partly cloudy sky and mild temperatures in the low-to-mid 70s Fahrenheit expected at post time. No significant rainfall is anticipated during race hours, though overnight moisture from the prior evening may have left a slightly sealed main track surface in the early going. The main track is listed as fast, and recent racing over the Churchill Downs dirt strip has shown it to be consistent and fair.

Churchill Downs' main track has been running true to form during this September meet. The strip has shown its usual characteristics: a surface that tends to favor horses that can sit off a contested pace and close with energy in the stretch, though the rail has been sneaking back into play on the inside paths as the meet matures. There have been no unusual bias reports from early races this week.

Track Bias and Post Position Analysis

Churchill Downs during the fall September meet historically plays in a manner that rewards a couple of specific patterns. On the dirt at sprint distances (1320f), horses drawn to the outside posts — particularly Posts 5 through 8 in fields of 8 — tend to be at no meaningful disadvantage, and speed horses that can get to the rail after breaking well have an edge. However, horses drawn extremely wide in very large fields (Races 5 and 7 feature 14 runners) face a more difficult chore as they must either use energy to secure position or settle very wide throughout.

At one-mile and longer routes, the rail and inside posts are slightly favored at Churchill Downs, particularly around the first turn. Post 1 in route races is not a death sentence here the way it can be at some other tracks, and horses with early speed from the inside can press the pace comfortably. Posts 4 through 6 are considered the sweet spot in most route race configurations on this track.

For today's large maiden fields in Races 5 and 7, outside posts from 9 through 14 will require tactical riders to work their mounts into reasonable striking position without burning excessive early energy. Jockeys like Jose Ortiz, Luis Saez, Tyler Gaffalione, and Joel Rosario — all aboard various horses today — are capable of managing wide draws, but the posts themselves represent a built-in challenge that will be reflected in trip notes post-race.

RACE 1 — Post (12:45)/11:45/10:45/9:45 — 1320f | D | C | Clm 16000n2l | BUM | Purse $36,000

This opener goes 6-1/2 furlongs on the main track for older fillies and mares that have not won two lifetime, with a claiming tag of $16,000. At the bottom end of the Churchill Downs claiming ladder, this race is typically populated by horses seeking their first win or lightly raced horses finding their class level. The $36,000 purse is modest and the field of eight presents a manageable wagering situation.

Pace Analysis

The early pace picture here is genuinely contested. Rising Creek (POST 3) has shown a consistent desire to get to the front, and from the middle of the gate she figures to press forward immediately. She's Gotta Go (POST 4) under the Asmussen barn and jockey Keith Asmussen comes from a barn that often sends horses with intent. Rumbar (POST 8) from the outside post under Dylan Machado may also want to press, creating a potential three-way speed duel that could collapse the front end and set up the closers. Serenity Song (POST 2) has the tactical ability to sit just off the leaders and pounce if the pace gets hot. The overall pace scenario suggests a moderate-to-hot early fraction that could play into the hands of a come-from-behind type if the speed gets into a war.

Key Contenders

Rumbar (POST 8), trained by Ben Colebrook and ridden by Dylan Machado at 3-1, is the morning line favorite alongside the top-tier selections and represents the most attractive combination of recent form and class. Colebrook is a capable conditioner at this level, and the outside post at 6-1/2 furlongs at Churchill Downs is manageable. Machado has been riding with confidence on this circuit and should be able to get Rumbar (POST 8) away cleanly and rate in a stalking position if the front-runners engage early.

Rising Creek (POST 3), trained by Larry Rivelli and ridden by Walter Rodriguez at 2-1, is the morning line chalk. Rivelli is a consistent trainer at the mid-level claiming game, and Rising Creek (POST 3) from Post 3 gets an ideal position to control the pace if she breaks alertly. Rodriguez has been active at Churchill Downs during this meet and rides Rising Creek (POST 3) with confidence. The 2-1 morning line suggests strong public support, but the pace scenario makes this a horse that could be vulnerable if the speed duel materializes.

She's Gotta Go (POST 4), trained by Steven Asmussen and ridden by his son Keith Asmussen at 4-1, carries barn power into this bottom-level claimer. Steven Asmussen sends out runners at every level of the game and takes the claiming ranks seriously. She's Gotta Go (POST 4) from Post 4 gets a clean break lane and figures to be in the pace mix throughout.

Secondary Choices

Serenity Song (POST 2), trained by Marcelino Salas and ridden by B.J. Hernandez Jr. at 4-1, is the natural stalker in this race. From Post 2, Hernandez can drop Serenity Song (POST 2) in behind the speed and conserve energy for a stretch run. If the pace scenario plays out as projected with three horses dueling early, Serenity Song (POST 2) is the horse best positioned to capitalize. At 4-1, the price is fair but not generous.

Beauxbatons (POST 7), trained by Genaro Garcia and ridden by Edgar Morales at 8-1, offers some intrigue as a closer at a price. Garcia is a competent barn at this level and Beauxbatons (POST 7) from Post 7 will have a wide trip if she wants to run, which could limit her effectiveness. Still, if the pace collapses, she merits inclusion in exotics.

Longshots

Pink Moon (POST 1), trained by Anna Navarrete and ridden by Yedsit Hazlewood at 12-1, draws the rail and will need to avoid trouble early. At the bottom of the claiming ladder with modest credentials, Pink Moon (POST 1) is a throw-out at these odds unless she shows speed in the gate.

Strife (POST 5), trained by Felipe Salas and ridden by Summer Pauly at 20-1, is a deep longshot with minimal expectations in this field. Pauly is a capable rider but the morning line reflects a horse without strong credentials.

Vinno Ronnie (POST 6), trained by Thomas Vance and ridden by Danny Sheehy at 15-1, is another low-probability runner. Sheehy has some experience on this circuit but Vinno Ronnie (POST 6) at these odds requires a trip scenario to materialize in her favor.

Selections

Win: Rumbar (POST 8) Place: Serenity Song (POST 2) Show: She's Gotta Go (POST 4)

Betting Strategy: This is a difficult opener to sink serious money into. A straight win bet on Rumbar (POST 8) at 3-1 represents the best single-ticket approach. In the exacta, key Rumbar (POST 8) over Serenity Song (POST 2) and She's Gotta Go (POST 4). If you want to use Rising Creek (POST 3) underneath in case she leads wire-to-wire and fades to place, add her to the bottom of exacta combinations.

RACE 2 — Post (1:14)/12:14/11:14/10:14 — 1760f | D | C | Clm 20000n2l | BUN | Purse $57,000

Race 2 goes one mile on the dirt for older runners that have not won two races, with a $20,000 claiming tag. The $57,000 purse is a step up from the opener and the field of eight features some legitimate contenders at the lower claiming level. This is a n2l condition, meaning all entrants are either maidens or one-time winners trying to earn their second score.

Pace Analysis

Culprit (POST 4) and Inordinary (POST 5) shape up as the two horses most likely to control the early pace from the rail-side posts. Weaponized (POST 6) has the same morning line odds as Culprit (POST 4) and may also want a piece of the early action. The inside trio of Culprit (POST 4), Inordinary (POST 5), and Weaponized (POST 6) could create a speed duel that sets up the closers. Dispersion (POST 8) from the outside draws attention as a potential late runner. The one-mile route at Churchill Downs allows for pace to develop through the first turn and down the backstretch, and the inside posts are slightly advantaged in this configuration.

Key Contenders

Culprit (POST 4), trained by David Jacobson and ridden by Tyler Gaffalione at 2-1, is one of two morning line co-favorites and enters the race with Gaffalione, one of the best riders in North America, aboard. Jacobson sends horses ready to fire and Culprit (POST 4) from Post 4 gets a perfect ground-saving spot through the first turn. Gaffalione is exceptional at rating horses in route races and can put Culprit (POST 4) in whatever position the pace scenario dictates.

Weaponized (POST 6), trained by Genaro Garcia and ridden by Edgar Morales at 2-1, is the other co-favorite. Garcia has runners in multiple races on today's card, suggesting a barn firing on all cylinders at this meet. Weaponized (POST 6) from Post 6 will have to deal with horses inside of him through the first turn but gets a clean run down the backstretch. Morales has shown comfort on this circuit and Weaponized (POST 6) at 2-1 is a live threat.

Inordinary (POST 5), trained by Joe Sharp and ridden by Jose Ortiz at 3-1, presents the most compelling value angle on this race. Sharp is an excellent trainer who places his horses with precision, and Ortiz is an elite jockey whose presence in any race signals a horse with genuine winning chances. At 3-1, Inordinary (POST 5) from Post 5 is the play on value.

Secondary Choices

Dispersion (POST 8), trained by Eric Foster and ridden by Francisco Arrieta at 8-1, is the primary closer in this field. From the outside post, Dispersion (POST 8) will need to make up ground if the pace develops on the front end. Foster is a patient conditioner and if Dispersion (POST 8) has the tactical ability to sit off a hot pace, the 8-1 morning line represents genuine value.

Surfin' M (POST 2), trained by Aaron Shorter and ridden by Cristian Torres at 10-1, is a double-digit morning line horse that bettors should not completely ignore. From Post 2, Surfin' M (POST 2) can secure an inside position and sit comfortably in the second flight. Torres rides Surfin' M (POST 2) and has been active on this card.

Longshots

Carcar Express (POST 1), trained by Brian Knippenberg and ridden by Danny Sheehy at 12-1, has the rail and will need clean passage. At 12-1, Carcar Express (POST 1) is a deep toss unless the pace scenarios completely fall apart.

Valiant Award (POST 3), trained by Ricky Short and ridden by Summer Pauly at 30-1, is a heavy longshot. The 30-1 morning line tells the full story here and Valiant Award (POST 3) needs significant improvement to factor.

Mountain Wolf (POST 7), trained by Shane Warpool and ridden by Jane Elliott at 30-1, is another long-priced runner with minimum expectations. Mountain Wolf (POST 7) can be safely eliminated from serious win considerations.

Selections

Win: Inordinary (POST 5) Place: Culprit (POST 4) Show: Weaponized (POST 6)

Betting Strategy: With two co-favorites at 2-1 and the third choice at 3-1, the morning line is tight at the top. The value play is Inordinary (POST 5) with the Ortiz/Sharp combination that demands respect. A win bet on Inordinary (POST 5) at 3-1 is the straight ticket. In exotics, build exactas around Inordinary (POST 5) and Culprit (POST 4), with Weaponized (POST 6) as an alternate underneath. Dispersion (POST 8) at 8-1 is worth adding to exacta bottoms as a pace-scenario beneficiary.

RACE 3 — Post (1:43)/12:43/11:43/10:43 — 1760f | D | M | Md 30000 | AON | Purse $57,000

Race 3 is a maiden claiming event at $30,000 for older horses going one mile on the dirt. The field of eight presents a manageable situation with several well-regarded trainers represented. Maiden claimers at this level often feature horses that have been tried in maiden special weight company and found wanting, now dropped to a price where they can find their winning level.

Pace Analysis

Amazing Max (POST 7) from the Brad Cox barn is the morning line chalk at 2-1, and Cox runners typically break alertly and establish position. Chrome (POST 1) from the Wilkes barn and Ritzy Rags (POST 3) from the Harty stable could also press the tempo. This race could develop as a moderate pace with Amazing Max (POST 7) sitting just off the leaders and pouncing in the stretch. The one-mile configuration at Churchill Downs will allow the true pace scenario to reveal itself through the first turn, with the backstretch serving as the decisive sorting ground.

Key Contenders

Amazing Max (POST 7), trained by Brad Cox and ridden by Tyler Gaffalione at 2-1, is the clear morning line favorite and deserves the role. Cox is one of the premier trainers in North America and sends Amazing Max (POST 7) out with Gaffalione, his go-to rider for the big spots. From Post 7, Gaffalione will need to manage a slightly wide break but should settle Amazing Max (POST 7) into a comfortable stalking position. Cox does not drop horses into maiden claimers unless they are ready to fire, making this entry the primary choice.

Ritzy Rags (POST 3), trained by Eoin Harty and ridden by Rafael Bejarano at 4-1, has excellent trainer credentials. Harty is a sharp conditioner who spots horses for wins and Ritzy Rags (POST 3) from Post 3 gets a clean trip through the first turn. Bejarano is an experienced rider who knows how to manage maiden routes.

Chrome (POST 1), trained by Ian Wilkes and ridden by Cristian Torres at 4-1, draws the rail and gets the ground-saving trip. Wilkes is a consistent trainer and Chrome (POST 1) from the inside could save ground throughout and pounce if the pace gets hot in front. Torres is an active rider on this card.

Secondary Choices

Concrete Overlay (POST 5), trained by Kelsey Danner and ridden by Yedsit Hazlewood at 4-1, shares the 4-1 morning line with Chrome (POST 1) and Ritzy Rags (POST 3). Danner is a developing trainer who has shown ability to place horses competitively. Concrete Overlay (POST 5) from the middle of the gate gets a clean break lane and could factor if fit and ready.

Tmac's Royalty (POST 2), trained by Robertino Diodoro and ridden by Joel Rosario at 6-1, benefits from the presence of Rosario, an elite rider who does not take mounts casually. Diodoro places his horses with care and Tmac's Royalty (POST 2) from Post 2 has an ideal position to track the pace.

Longshots

Camping Siete (POST 4), trained by Ismael Bahena and ridden by Summer Pauly at 20-1, faces a challenging task against more established barns in this field. Camping Siete (POST 4) can be safely used only as a longshot exotic filler.

Mambo Man (POST 6), trained by Kelly Fernandez and ridden by Carlos Jimenez at 30-1, is a maximum longshot and can be eliminated from serious wagering considerations in most race types.

Honor And Courage (POST 8), trained by Thomas Vance and ridden by Adam Beschizza at 15-1, is another Vance runner in what appears to be a busy day for the barn. At 15-1, Honor And Courage (POST 8) is a throwout unless the pace scenario collapses dramatically.

Selections

Win: Amazing Max (POST 7) Place: Ritzy Rags (POST 3) Show: Tmac's Royalty (POST 2)

Betting Strategy: The Cox/Gaffalione combination at 2-1 is the straightforward win play. The real opportunity here is in the exacta between Amazing Max (POST 7) on top and the trio of Ritzy Rags (POST 3), Chrome (POST 1), and Tmac's Royalty (POST 2) underneath. If Amazing Max (POST 7) wins at 2-1 and a 4-1 shot fills second, the exacta should return a reasonable number. Do not ignore Tmac's Royalty (POST 2) with the Rosario/Diodoro combination as a potential upset special.

RACE 4 — Post (2:13)/1:13/12:13/11:13 — 1870f | D | C | Clm 32000 | BUN | Purse $71,000

Race 4 stretches the card out to 1-3/16 miles for older horses at a $32,000 claiming level. With a $71,000 purse, this is a competitive mid-card route race featuring a legitimate morning line favorite in J B Strikes Back (POST 7) from the Doug O'Neill barn at 1-1. Seven horses are entered, making this a field where every horse has a realistic shot and the pace scenario will be critical.

Pace Analysis

J B Strikes Back (POST 7), despite the outside post in a seven-horse field, from the O'Neill barn is likely to get some early position with Luan Machado aboard. Bestfriend Rocket (POST 1) from the Blair barn could also show early foot from the inside. California Burrito (POST 5) under Torres may press as well. The key pace question is whether any single horse can steal this race on a solo lead or whether the front-runners will engage each other sufficiently to set up a closer. At 1-3/16 miles, pace sustainability is the premium.

Key Contenders

J B Strikes Back (POST 7), trained by Doug O'Neill and ridden by Luan Machado at 1-1, is the clear morning line choice and the most obvious play in the race. O'Neill is a proven big-event trainer who has managed horses at the highest levels of the sport. Even at the $32,000 claiming level, O'Neill does not enter horses without intent. At 1-1, the value is minimal for win-only bettors, making exotics the preferred approach.

Curlin's Malibu (POST 4), trained by Michael Maker and ridden by Jose Ortiz at 2-1, is the primary threat to J B Strikes Back (POST 7). Maker is one of the top trainers at Churchill Downs during this meet and Ortiz is a rider who consistently performs at elite levels. Curlin's Malibu (POST 4) from Post 4 gets the ideal ground-saving trip through the first turn and Ortiz will have him perfectly positioned to run at the favorite in the stretch.

Secondary Choices

Bestfriend Rocket (POST 1), trained by Jordan Blair and ridden by Edgar Morales at 4-1, has the rail and gets the ground-saving trip. Blair has shown ability to have horses fit for claiming races, and Bestfriend Rocket (POST 1) from the inside could save ground throughout the 1-3/16-mile journey. If Bestfriend Rocket (POST 1) can get out of the gate cleanly and secure the rail, Morales can control the pace.

California Burrito (POST 5), trained by Thomas Drury Jr. and ridden by Cristian Torres at 4-1, offers another alternative at the same morning line odds. Drury has multiple horses on today's card and appears active at this meet. California Burrito (POST 5) from Post 5 gets a clean break but will need to navigate around horses through the first turn.

Longshots

Dai Vernon (POST 3), trained by Carlos David and ridden by Luis Saez at 15-1, is an interesting longshot angle. David is a capable trainer and Saez is a premier rider who typically does not waste his time on hopeless causes. At 15-1, Dai Vernon (POST 3) could be worth including on the bottom of exotics for a potential payday.

Real Fast (POST 2), trained by Barry King and ridden by Walter Rodriguez at 20-1, is a deep longshot with minimum expectations. Real Fast (POST 2) can be eliminated from most wagering structures.

Smoken Boy (POST 6), trained by Brittany Vanden Berg and ridden by C.A. Emigh at 20-1, is another long-priced entry. The 20-1 morning line tells the full story and Smoken Boy (POST 6) is a throwout in most wagering contexts.

Selections

Win: Curlin's Malibu (POST 4) Place: J B Strikes Back (POST 7) Show: Bestfriend Rocket (POST 1)

Betting Strategy: With J B Strikes Back (POST 7) at 1-1, the most profitable wagering approach is an exacta with Curlin's Malibu (POST 4) on top and J B Strikes Back (POST 7) underneath, or a reverse exacta box between the two. If Curlin's Malibu (POST 4) can upset the odds-on favorite, the exacta payoff becomes meaningful. Win bettors who want action on a short-priced race should consider a small straight play on Curlin's Malibu (POST 4) at 2-1 rather than the 1-1 chalk. Include Dai Vernon (POST 3) with the Saez connection on the bottom of trifectas.

RACE 5 — Post (2:45)/1:45/12:45/11:45 — 1320f | D | S | Md Sp Wt | AON | Purse $92,000

This is the first of two $92,000 maiden special weight sprint events on the card and features a massive field of 14 runners going 6-1/2 furlongs on the dirt. At this level and purse, the runners are first-time starters or lightly experienced youngsters seeking their maiden score. With 14 horses going 6-1/2 furlongs, pace and post position will be critically important, as the sprint distance provides very little room for error and the crowded first turn creates inherent traffic risks.

Pace Analysis

With 14 horses breaking from the gate at 6-1/2 furlongs, the pace will be contested and potentially frenetic through the opening quarter. Breadcrumb Trail (POST 10), Charging Force (POST 12), When I Go (POST 14), and Modern (POST 8) all have early speed credentials and figures to establish position quickly. The wide posts from 10 through 14 will force riders to either rush forward to grab position or accept a very wide trip. The inside posts from 1 through 5 have a natural ground-saving advantage, but horses going wide from the rail in a crowded sprint field also face traffic. A hot pace here could set up a closer, but in maiden sprint fields at Churchill Downs, the horses that can find clean air early typically prevail.

Key Contenders

Breadcrumb Trail (POST 10), trained by Kinnon LaRose and ridden by Edgar Morales at 4-1, shares the morning line leadership with Charging Force (POST 12) and When I Go (POST 14) at 4-1. From Post 10, Morales will need to angle inward early and find a comfortable position off the leaders. LaRose sends Breadcrumb Trail (POST 10) with Morales, who has been riding actively on this card.

Charging Force (POST 12), trained by Dale Romans and ridden by Martin Garcia at 4-1, comes from one of the signature Churchill Downs barns. Romans has been sending out winners at this track for decades and knows every nuance of the Twin Spires setup. Charging Force (POST 12) from Post 12 is a wide draw, but Garcia is an experienced hand who can navigate crowded fields. Romans' Churchill Downs percentage is among the best of any trainer in the country.

When I Go (POST 14), trained by Eric Foster and ridden by Tyler Gaffalione at 4-1, shares the top morning line price and features Gaffalione, the most accomplished rider in this field. From the outermost post, When I Go (POST 14) will face the widest possible trip in a field of 14 unless Gaffalione can work the horse across the track to better position. Foster sends When I Go (POST 14) with the top available rider, which signals strong trainer confidence.

Secondary Choices

Jersey Jack (POST 7), trained by Victoria Oliver and ridden by Luis Saez at 6-1, is the most compelling value angle in this race. Saez is among the elite riders in North American racing and his presence on any horse signals legitimate winning intent. From Post 7, Saez can get Jersey Jack (POST 7) out of the gate cleanly and into a stalking position without getting caught in the early speed wars from the outside posts.

Modern (POST 8), trained by Thomas Drury Jr. and ridden by Cristian Torres at 6-1, is another 6-1 morning line option from near the middle of the pack. Drury is active on today's card and Modern (POST 8) from Post 8 gets a manageable spot if Torres can secure clean air early.

Cicero Ave (POST 4), trained by Robert Medina and ridden by Tyler Gaffalione at 6-1, is listed alongside When I Go (POST 14) with Gaffalione. If there is a jockey change to resolve, this bears watching. From Post 4, Gaffalione gets the ideal ground-saving trip in a 14-horse maiden sprint field. Post 4 in a 14-horse sprint at Churchill Downs is a significant positional advantage.

Drain The Shot (POST 6), trained by Michael Maker and ridden by Joel Rosario at 8-1, is a horse to respect. Maker is one of the top trainers at Churchill Downs and Rosario is a Hall of Fame-caliber rider. At 8-1, Drain The Shot (POST 6) from Post 6 gets a workable post and the Maker/Rosario combination is a powerhouse.

Longshots

Farrokh (POST 3), trained by Eddie Kenneally and ridden by Francisco Arrieta at 10-1, gets the inside post lane advantage from Post 3 and Kenneally is a legitimate trainer. At 10-1, Farrokh (POST 3) merits consideration in exotics.

Double Arrow (POST 13), trained by Robertino Diodoro and ridden by Cristian Torres at 10-1, presents the Diodoro barn at a double-digit price from a challenging outside post. Double Arrow (POST 13) from Post 13 faces an uphill battle for position.

Psalm One Eighteen (POST 5), trained by Corie Anderson and ridden by Julien Leparoux at 12-1, features a veteran rider who knows Churchill Downs well. From Post 5, Leparoux can get Psalm One Eighteen (POST 5) into a ground-saving position.

Divine Truth (POST 1), trained by Ronald Moquett and ridden by Yedsit Hazlewood at 20-1, draws the rail but figures as a longshot in this competitive field.

Soap Note (POST 2), trained by Dallas Stewart and ridden by Mario Gutierrez at 20-1, has Stewart connections but the 20-1 morning line indicates limited expectations.

Good Lies (POST 9), trained by Norm Casse and ridden by Jose Ortiz at 20-1, is an interesting longshot solely because of the Ortiz connection. Casse is a solid trainer and Ortiz does not ride hopeless horses. At 20-1, Good Lies (POST 9) is a deep exotic inclusion.

Knicks Warrior (POST 11), trained by Michael McCarthy and ridden by Walter Rodriguez at 20-1, is a significant longshot from a far outside post.

Breadcrumb Trail (POST 10) has been addressed above as a primary contender.

Selections

Win: Drain The Shot (POST 6) Place: Charging Force (POST 12) Show: Jersey Jack (POST 7)

Betting Strategy: In a 14-horse maiden sprint field, single-race bets are treacherous. The recommended approach is to build wide-open trifecta and superfecta tickets. Use Drain The Shot (POST 6) and Jersey Jack (POST 7) as top choices, along with Charging Force (POST 12) and When I Go (POST 14), in multi-horse trifecta combinations. Keep costs manageable by boxing your top four choices in the trifecta. Include Good Lies (POST 9) as a long-price dart in superfecta bottoms. The Maker/Rosario combination on Drain The Shot (POST 6) at 8-1 represents the best value angle.

RACE 6 — Post (3:17)/2:17/1:17/12:17 — 1320f | D | C | Clm 16000b | BUM | Purse $37,000

Race 6 has been specifically identified by Daily Racing Form expert handicapper Marcus Hersh as his best bet of the day. This 6-1/2-furlong claiming sprint for fillies and mares with a $16,000 claiming tag features 12 runners and represents the signature race for bettors looking to maximize a key opinion from one of the sport's most respected analysts. Bettors should approach this race with elevated confidence and appropriate investment.

The claiming tag of $16,000 with the “b” designation indicates this is a claiming race where horses can be entered for a set price, and the “BUM” designation indicates this is for older fillies and mares. The $37,000 purse is modest but the competitive field ensures legitimate action at the windows.

Pace Analysis

With 12 runners in a sprint, the pace scenario is complex. Diagram (POST 12) from the Calhoun barn and Dancewhenyoucan (POST 3) figure as potential pace-setters. Modern Sound (POST 4) from the Maker barn with Gaffalione up could also press forward. The wide starting positions of the outside horses — Call Me Angel (POST 11), Diagram (POST 12) — will force those jockeys to decide immediately whether to spend energy rushing forward to the rail or settling wide. A moderately contested pace is the most likely scenario, with the closers having a legitimate opportunity if the front-runners get into any kind of battle.

Key Contenders

Modern Sound (POST 4), trained by Michael Maker and ridden by Tyler Gaffalione at 3-1, is the morning line favorite and merits careful consideration as a potential candidate for Hersh's best bet designation. Maker is an elite trainer at Churchill Downs and Gaffalione is the best rider in the field. From Post 4, Modern Sound (POST 4) gets an ideal position for the one-turn sprint. Maker/Gaffalione at 3-1 in a sprint at Churchill Downs is always a play.

Diagram (POST 12), trained by Bret Calhoun and ridden by Axel Concepcion at 4-1, is the second choice and Calhoun is one of the most efficient claiming horse trainers in the Churchill Downs region. From Post 12, Diagram (POST 12) faces the widest possible trip, but if Concepcion can angle her inside early and find running room, the Calhoun barn is capable of getting this done. Calhoun's win percentage at Churchill Downs is consistently respectable.

Glazin' Fury (POST 7), trained by Linda Rice and ridden by Ben Curtis at 6-1, features Rice, a respected conditioner, and Curtis, a veteran rider comfortable on Churchill Downs' fast main track. At 6-1, Glazin' Fury (POST 7) from Post 7 gets a workable position and the odds represent genuine value.

Secondary Choices

Dancewhenyoucan (POST 3), trained by Matt Shirer and ridden by Mario Gutierrez at 5-1, is an intriguing mid-price option. From Post 3, Gutierrez can get Dancewhenyoucan (POST 3) out of the gate and into position without burning excessive energy. The 5-1 morning line suggests public respect and Shirer is a conditioner who places horses thoughtfully.

Call Me Angel (POST 11), trained by Genaro Garcia and ridden by Edgar Morales at 10-1, is another Garcia barn runner on a busy day for the conditioner. At 10-1, Call Me Angel (POST 11) from Post 11 faces a challenging outside post but Garcia/Morales have been active and capable throughout today's card.

Longshots

Magic Seeker (POST 1), trained by Brittany Vanden Berg and ridden by C.A. Emigh at 12-1, draws the rail in a 12-horse sprint field. In the early going of a full field sprint, the inside post can be dangerous, but if Magic Seeker (POST 1) can break cleanly and secure the rail, the ground-saving trip is valuable.

Ashkenazi (POST 2), trained by Rick Hiles and ridden by Abel Cedillo at 15-1, is a longshot that benefits from Post 2. Cedillo is an experienced rider who can navigate crowded sprint fields. At 15-1, Ashkenazi (POST 2) is an exotic inclusion at best.

Code Of Valor (POST 5), trained by Frank Lucarelli and ridden by William Antongeorgi Jr. at 20-1, is a deep longshot. Code Of Valor (POST 5) can be eliminated from most serious wagering structures.

Bright Lady Day (POST 6), trained by Christopher Jackson and ridden by Jane Elliott at 20-1, is another maximum longshot. Bright Lady Day (POST 6) at 20-1 is a throwout.

Ducat (POST 8), trained by Shelbi Kurtz and ridden by Adam Beschizza at 15-1, is a Beschizza mount worth noting at 15-1. The jockey is capable on this circuit but the morning line is not encouraging.

Super Costly (POST 9), trained by Yoni Orantes and ridden by Luis Saez at 15-1, is the intriguing deep-price angle in this race. Saez riding a 15-1 morning line horse in any race demands at least a brief second look. If Orantes has Super Costly (POST 9) fit and ready, the Saez connection could signal a sneaky live longshot.

Miss Pierre (POST 10), trained by Felipe Nickel and ridden by J. Graham at 12-1, is a longshot requiring the pace to completely fall apart in her favor.

Selections

Win: Modern Sound (POST 4) Place: Diagram (POST 12) Show: Glazin' Fury (POST 7)

Betting Strategy: Given that Hersh has identified Race 6 as his best bet of the day, this is the race to allocate maximum resources. Modern Sound (POST 4) at 3-1 with the Maker/Gaffalione combination is the best bet selection — a straight win play on Modern Sound (POST 4) is the appropriate primary wager. Layer in an exacta key of Modern Sound (POST 4) over Diagram (POST 12), Glazin' Fury (POST 7), and Dancewhenyoucan (POST 3). The most intriguing angle is Super Costly (POST 9) at 15-1 with Saez — include her in the third spot of trifectas. The pick 3 (Races 6-7-8) could anchor an entire day's exotic strategy.

RACE 7 — Post (3:48)/2:48/1:48/12:48 — 1320f | D | S | Md Sp Wt | AON | Purse $92,000

The second $92,000 maiden special weight sprint of the day also features 14 runners going 6-1/2 furlongs on the dirt. In this instance, the morning line is dominated by Unbridled Freedom (POST 10) at 1-1, making this a much clearer betting situation than the 14-horse field in Race 5. The presence of a clear morning line odds-on favorite in a large maiden field is worth analyzing carefully — understanding when to oppose a heavy favorite is as important as knowing when to play one.

Pace Analysis

Unbridled Freedom (POST 10) at 1-1 suggests a horse of significantly superior quality to this field, and at that price, Kenneally and Curtis are expected to have Unbridled Freedom (POST 10) sit in whatever position is necessary and unleash a winning run when asked. From Post 10, Curtis will need to work Unbridled Freedom (POST 10) into a comfortable position from a wide draw. The pace in a 14-horse sprint will again be contested early, with multiple horses from inside posts pushing forward. Pirate Ship (POST 7) with Jose Ortiz and Bonzo (POST 14) with Martin Garcia figure as potential pace pressers or forwardly-placed runners.

Key Contenders

Unbridled Freedom (POST 10), trained by Eddie Kenneally and ridden by Ben Curtis at 1-1, is the clear morning line choice and the horse to beat in this field. Kenneally is an accomplished trainer and sends Unbridled Freedom (POST 10) at 1-1, indicating a horse of clear superiority over these rivals. At 1-1, the win pool value is essentially non-existent, but for exotic wagering purposes, Unbridled Freedom (POST 10) serves as the natural key horse.

Pirate Ship (POST 7), trained by Joe Sharp and ridden by Jose Ortiz at 5-1, is the most attractive alternative to the chalk. Sharp is an excellent trainer, Ortiz is elite, and Pirate Ship (POST 7) from Post 7 gets a workable inside-middle draw in the 14-horse field. If anything is going to defeat Unbridled Freedom (POST 10), the Sharp/Ortiz combination offers the best chance.

Secondary Choices

Touch Money (POST 1), trained by Bret Calhoun and ridden by Axel Concepcion at 8-1, has the rail in a 14-horse sprint field. Calhoun appears on the card in multiple races today and Touch Money (POST 1) from the inside lane has a ground-saving advantage in a wide field. At 8-1, Touch Money (POST 1) offers genuine exotic value.

Bonzo (POST 14), trained by Dale Romans and ridden by Martin Garcia at 8-1, brings the Romans/Churchill Downs pedigree again. From the outermost post in a 14-horse field, Garcia will have decisions to make immediately regarding positioning. Romans, as noted earlier, has an outstanding Churchill Downs record.

Detention (POST 4), trained by Wayne Catalano and ridden by Yedsit Hazlewood at 8-1, shares the secondary odds and comes from a respected barn. Catalano is a proven trainer and Detention (POST 4) from Post 4 gets a manageable spot.

Longshots

Uncle With Money (POST 2), trained by Rey Hernandez and ridden by Luis Saez at 12-1, is another Saez longshot connection. As noted throughout this card, Saez does not take charity mounts and Uncle With Money (POST 2) at 12-1 from Post 2 with the ideal inside position merits exotic inclusion.

Coltrane (POST 3), trained by Ronald Moquett and ridden by Tyler Gaffalione at 15-1, is an interesting deeper price with Gaffalione. Post 3 in a 14-horse field is a workable draw and Gaffalione rarely gets on a horse without a legitimate chance. At 15-1, Coltrane (POST 3) is a value longshot.

Clonmacnoise (POST 11), trained by John Ennis and ridden by Danny Sheehy at 12-1, is a longshot from an outside post. Clonmacnoise (POST 11) needs pace complications to factor.

Golden Reserve (POST 6), trained by Riley Mott and ridden by Jaime Torres at 12-1, comes from a Mott barn entry. Golden Reserve (POST 6) from Post 6 gets a reasonable draw.

Sunfyre (POST 9), trained by Ian Wilkes and ridden by B.J. Hernandez Jr. at 20-1, and Lindenborg (POST 5), trained by Eduardo Caramori and ridden by Walter Rodriguez at 20-1, are both longshots with minimum expectations.

Mitole Joe (POST 8), trained by Matt Williams and ridden by Cristian Torres at 30-1, is a maximum longshot.

Major John (POST 12), trained by Dallas Stewart and ridden by Gerardo Corrales at 15-1, and Buffalo Soldier (POST 13), trained by Jordan Blair and ridden by Edgar Morales at 15-1, round out the longshots in this large field.

Selections

Win: Unbridled Freedom (POST 10) Place: Pirate Ship (POST 7) Show: Touch Money (POST 1)

Betting Strategy: With Unbridled Freedom (POST 10) at 1-1, the win pool offers almost no value. The strategic play is to key Unbridled Freedom (POST 10) on top in exactas and trifectas with Pirate Ship (POST 7), Touch Money (POST 1), Bonzo (POST 14), and Coltrane (POST 3) underneath. The trifecta key is the primary wager: Unbridled Freedom (POST 10) on top with those four in the second and third positions. Uncle With Money (POST 2) with Saez at 12-1 is the most intriguing longshot play for a potential trifecta bomb.

RACE 8 — Post (4:19)/3:19/2:19/1:19 — 1540f | D | R | Alw 50000s | BUN | Purse $83,000

Race 8 is the allowance feature of the day, going 1-5/16 miles on the dirt for a $83,000 purse at the allowance level. Seven runners are entered and this is one of the more competitive races on the card in terms of class. Allowance horses at Churchill Downs during the September meet are typically well-conditioned and capable runners.

Pace Analysis

Remi's Moon (POST 2) and Bob's Carrot (POST 5) are the co-morning line choices at 2-1 each and figure as the primary pace-setters or pressure horses in this field. Trouble Time (POST 4) under Gaffalione may also want to be involved early. The longer 1-5/16-mile distance allows for pace development and settles naturally into a rhythm on the Churchill Downs main track. Closers have a genuine opportunity at this distance if the co-favorites engage each other for the lead.

Key Contenders

Remi's Moon (POST 2), trained by Joe Sharp and ridden by Jose Ortiz at 2-1, is the primary selection in this race. Sharp consistently develops horses for the allowance level and Remi's Moon (POST 2) from Post 2 gets a clean, ground-saving trip. Ortiz is the best rider in this field and the Sharp/Ortiz combination at Churchill Downs demands maximum respect. At 2-1, the price is modest but the combination justifies the investment.

Bob's Carrot (POST 5), trained by Carlos Santamaria and ridden by Jaime Torres at 2-1, is the other co-favorite. Santamaria is a developing trainer who has shown ability to have horses sharp for big spots. Bob's Carrot (POST 5) from Post 5 gets a clean break lane and Torres is a capable rider at this circuit. The co-favorite pricing at 2-1 for both top choices makes the race extremely competitive.

Secondary Choices

Trouble Time (POST 4), trained by Nicholas Vaccarezza and ridden by Tyler Gaffalione at 4-1, is the most intriguing value play in the race. Gaffalione is the premier jockey at Churchill Downs and while Trouble Time (POST 4) is listed behind the co-favorites in the morning line, the jockey advantage is significant. Vaccarezza is a capable conditioner and from Post 4, Gaffalione gets a comfortable position to track the pace and make a move at the right moment.

Ghostwritten (POST 6), trained by Christopher Davis and ridden by Luis Saez at 6-1, offers the Saez connection at a value price. Davis is a trainer who places horses carefully and Ghostwritten (POST 6) from Post 6 could close into a pace that gets honest over 1-5/16 miles. At 6-1, this is the most attractive bet price in the race given the jockey.

Ski Bum (POST 1), trained by David Jacobson and ridden by Joel Rosario at 6-1, shares the 6-1 morning line with Ghostwritten (POST 6) and brings Jacobson/Rosario connections from the inside post. Rosario from the rail at 1-5/16 miles in an allowance race is a legitimate contender.

Longshots

Stomp (POST 3), trained by Ronald Moquett and ridden by Yedsit Hazlewood at 15-1, is a significant longshot in an allowance field. Stomp (POST 3) can be eliminated from most serious win considerations.

Mo Work (POST 7), trained by Mark Simms Jr. and ridden by Axel Concepcion at 8-1, rounds out the field from the outside post. SIMMS Jr. is a developing trainer and Mo Work (POST 7) from Post 7 has the widest draw. At 8-1, Mo Work (POST 7) is an exotic inclusion if the pace shapes up favorably for a late-running closer.

Selections

Win: Remi's Moon (POST 2) Place: Trouble Time (POST 4) Show: Ghostwritten (POST 6)

Betting Strategy: Remi's Moon (POST 2) with the Sharp/Ortiz combination at 2-1 is the play. Build an exacta around Remi's Moon (POST 2) and Trouble Time (POST 4), with Bob's Carrot (POST 5) and Ghostwritten (POST 6) in supporting positions. The trifecta structure should include Remi's Moon (POST 2) and Trouble Time (POST 4) on top with the remaining contenders in the third slot. This race is a prime candidate for the middle of a pick 3 sequence.

RACE 9 — Post (4:50)/3:50/2:50/1:50 — 1430f | D | M | Md 20000 | BUM | Purse $48,000

The finale goes 1-3/16 miles on the dirt for older fillies and mares at a $20,000 maiden claiming price. With 16 runners — a massive field — this race is a challenging wagering puzzle that will test the patience of even experienced handicappers. Two co-morning line choices at 2-1 give the race some shape, but 16 maiden claiming fillies and mares at a route distance creates enormous unpredictability.

Pace Analysis

In a 16-horse maiden claiming route, pace scenarios are extremely difficult to predict. Shot At Perfection (POST 12) and Cosmopolitan Lady (POST 13) are the co-morning line choices at 2-1 each, and both will need to navigate through the pack from mid-field posts. Inside post horses — Loves To Fish (POST 1), Vinointhemoonlight (POST 2), Valiant War Girl (POST 3) — have natural ground-saving advantages in the route configuration. The 1-3/16-mile distance provides time for pace to develop and the massive field virtually guarantees a contested early pace as multiple horses from outside posts rush to secure position.

Key Contenders

Shot At Perfection (POST 12), trained by Ian Wilkes and ridden by Victor Carrasco at 2-1, is one of two co-morning line choices. Wilkes appears multiple times on today's card and Shot At Perfection (POST 12) from Post 12 faces a wide draw in the 16-horse field but has trainer credibility and a respectable morning line price.

Cosmopolitan Lady (POST 13), trained by Bret Calhoun and ridden by Luan Machado at 2-1, is the other co-favorite. Calhoun has been active throughout today's card and Cosmopolitan Lady (POST 13) from Post 13, like Shot At Perfection (POST 12), faces a challenging outside draw. Machado is aboard and brings competitive credentials.

Market Strategy (POST 10), trained by Michael Tomlinson and ridden by Axel Concepcion at 4-1, is a legitimate alternative to the co-favorites. Tomlinson has two horses in this race, the other being Vinointhemoonlight (POST 2), suggesting the stable has multiple live options. Market Strategy (POST 10) from Post 10 gets a manageable outside draw and Concepcion is an active rider on this card.

Fraudster (POST 11), trained by David Jacobson and ridden by Joel Rosario at 4-1, carries the Jacobson/Rosario combination that was seen earlier in the card. Rosario is an elite rider who does not carry chalk and Fraudster (POST 11) from Post 11 gets a workable post just inside the co-favorites.

Secondary Choices

Sister Wife (POST 5), trained by Thomas Van Berg and ridden by Francisco Arrieta at 6-1, gets an ideal inside draw in this massive field. From Post 5, Arrieta can secure a ground-saving position and track the pace through the first turn without expending excessive early energy.

Crystal Frost (POST 14), trained by Roddina Barrett and ridden by Rafael Bejarano at 6-1, brings Bejarano aboard from a far outside post. At 6-1, Crystal Frost (POST 14) from Post 14 faces the challenge of a wide draw in a 16-horse route, but Bejarano is an accomplished rider.

Perpetua (POST 16), trained by Thomas Drury Jr. and ridden by B.J. Hernandez Jr. at 6-1, starts from the outermost post in the field. Drury has had multiple runners on today's card. Perpetua (POST 16) from the last post gets the maximum outside trip.

Wado Wave (POST 15), trained by James Dimmett and ridden by Walter Rodriguez at 8-1, is another outside-post runner that Rodriguez will need to manage carefully.

Longshots

Vinointhemoonlight (POST 2), trained by Tomlinson and ridden by Jaime Torres at 10-1, is the stable companion to Market Strategy (POST 10). From Post 2, Vinointhemoonlight (POST 2) gets the ground-saving trip and at 10-1, could be a deep value play if the barn has this one more ready than the higher-priced stablemate.

Loves To Fish (POST 1), trained by Wayne Catalano and ridden by Rave Danilo Grisales at 15-1, has the inside post and Catalano's barn connections but the 15-1 morning line dampens expectations.

Valiant War Girl (POST 3), trained by John Ennis and ridden by Danny Sheehy at 15-1, is a longshot from an inside post. Ennis appears on this card in multiple races.

Spotted (POST 9), trained by Marcelino Salas and ridden by B.J. Hernandez Jr. at 20-1, carries the active Hernandez Jr. aboard but the 20-1 morning line reflects limited expectations.

Total Fabrication (POST 7), trained by Dana Hancock and ridden by Summer Pauly at 20-1, Diamond Tiara (POST 8), trained by Brian Williamson and ridden by Miguel Fernandez at 30-1, and No Mo Rags (POST 6), trained by Jennifer Tooley and ridden by William Antongeorgi Jr. at 30-1, are all deep longshots that can be used only as superfecta fillers.

Gucci Gammy (POST 4), trained by Paul Brown Jr. and ridden by Luke Hoskins at 30-1, is a maximum longshot at the tail end of the morning line.

Selections

Win: Fraudster (POST 11) Place: Market Strategy (POST 10) Show: Sister Wife (POST 5)

Betting Strategy: In a 16-horse maiden claiming route, the approach must be conservative on straight bets and aggressive in exotics. A win bet on Fraudster (POST 11) at 4-1 with the Rosario connection offers the best balance of price and probability. Build trifectas with Fraudster (POST 11) and Market Strategy (POST 10) on top, using Cosmopolitan Lady (POST 13), Shot At Perfection (POST 12), Sister Wife (POST 5), and Crystal Frost (POST 14) in supporting positions. The superfecta in a 16-horse field can produce monster payoffs — a small investment with a wide spread makes sense.

Jockey Notes and Insights

Tyler Gaffalione appears multiple times on today's card and is the premier rider at Churchill Downs during this September meet. He rides Amazing Max (POST 7) in Race 3, Culprit (POST 4) in Race 2, Modern Sound (POST 4) in Race 6, Trouble Time (POST 4) in Race 8, and holds mounts in Races 5 and 7 as well. Gaffalione's presence on any horse at any price demands attention and his win percentage at Churchill Downs consistently outperforms the national average for leading riders.

Jose Ortiz is another elite rider appearing multiple times today, including aboard Inordinary (POST 5) in Race 2, Good Lies (POST 9) in Race 5, and Remi's Moon (POST 2) in Race 8. Ortiz accepts mounts based on genuine winning probability and his presence on Remi's Moon (POST 2) in the allowance feature is a strong endorsement of that horse's chances.

Luis Saez is riding across multiple races today and carries interesting longshot connections. Super Costly (POST 9) at 15-1 in Race 6 is worth monitoring as Saez rarely accepts hopeless mounts. Uncle With Money (POST 2) at 12-1 in Race 7 and Dai Vernon (POST 3) at 15-1 in Race 4 are other Saez longshot angles worth tracking.

Joel Rosario rides Ski Bum (POST 1) in Race 8, Drain The Shot (POST 6) in Race 5, Tmac's Royalty (POST 2) in Race 3, and Fraudster (POST 11) in Race 9. The Rosario/Sharp combination on Drain The Shot (POST 6) in the large maiden sprint is an obvious angle.

The absence of Florent Geroux from this card, following his serious riding accident last Thursday, has reshuffled jockey assignments throughout the meet. Bettors should be alert to any horses that may have originally been ticketed for Geroux and are now running with replacement riders, as those horses can sometimes be overlooked by the public.

Edgar Morales is extremely active on today's card, riding in at least six races. While Morales is a capable journeyman rider, the sheer volume of his appearances today suggests he is absorbing mounts from multiple sources.

Ben Curtis, aboard Unbridled Freedom (POST 10) in Race 7 and Glazin' Fury (POST 7) in Race 6, brings solid credentials. His assignment on the heavy morning line favorite Unbridled Freedom (POST 10) in Race 7 is the most notable ride of his day.

Trainer Notes and Insights

Brad Cox, who saddles Amazing Max (POST 7) in Race 3, is among the top trainers in North America and his Churchill Downs win percentage is exceptional. Any Cox runner at Churchill Downs during the fall meet deserves serious consideration regardless of odds.

Michael Maker appears multiple times on today's card — Curlin's Malibu (POST 4) in Race 4, Drain The Shot (POST 6) in Race 5, and Modern Sound (POST 4) in Race 6. Maker is one of the most versatile and successful trainers in the country and his Churchill Downs percentage is consistently above average. Three Maker horses on a single mid-week card suggests the barn has horses ready to fire.

Dale Romans sending horses at Churchill Downs is always relevant. Charging Force (POST 12) in Race 5 and Bonzo (POST 14) in Race 7 both carry the Romans barn credentials. Romans has trained more than 100 stakes winners at Churchill Downs and knows every nuance of the main track.

Joe Sharp trains Remi's Moon (POST 2) in Race 8, Pirate Ship (POST 7) in Race 7, and Inordinary (POST 5) in Race 2. Three horses on today's card from Sharp is significant and suggests a barn that is particularly active and well-conditioned at this point in the meet.

Genaro Garcia has a noticeably active presence on today's card with Beauxbatons (POST 7) in Race 1, Weaponized (POST 6) in Race 2, and Call Me Angel (POST 11) in Race 6. A trainer with multiple entries on a single card often signals a barn firing on all cylinders, and Garcia's horses merit careful consideration beyond their morning line prices.

Bret Calhoun appears on the card in Race 6 with Diagram (POST 12), in Race 7 with Touch Money (POST 1), and in Race 9 with Cosmopolitan Lady (POST 13). Calhoun is one of the most efficient claimers and lower-level trainers in the Churchill Downs region and his horses at reasonable odds are consistent threats.

Ian Wilkes has multiple horses on today's card including Chrome (POST 1) in Race 3, Sunfyre (POST 9) in Race 7, Shot At Perfection (POST 12) in Race 9, and others. Wilkes is a competent barn at all levels and his co-favorite in the finale is worth monitoring closely for late wagering action.

Doug O'Neill, who trains J B Strikes Back (POST 7) in Race 4, is a respected trainer with national credentials. O'Neill having the morning line odds-on favorite at a mid-level claiming race at Churchill Downs is a statement of intent.

Best Wagering Strategies and Value Plays

The signature value angle for the entire card is the Maker/Gaffalione combination on Modern Sound (POST 4) in Race 6, which has been identified as the best bet of the day. Allocate your largest single-race investment here. A straight win bet at 3-1 is the primary vehicle. Layer in an exacta key with Diagram (POST 12) and Glazin' Fury (POST 7) underneath.

For multi-race exotic play, the Pick 3 spanning Races 6, 7, and 8 is the recommended anchor sequence. Use Modern Sound (POST 4) in Race 6 as your single, spread broadly in Race 7 using Unbridled Freedom (POST 10), Pirate Ship (POST 7), Touch Money (POST 1), and Coltrane (POST 3), and then use Remi's Moon (POST 2) and Trouble Time (POST 4) as your doubles in Race 8.

For the Pick 4 from Race 5 through Race 8, the structure becomes more manageable if you use the top four choices in Race 5 — Drain The Shot (POST 6), Charging Force (POST 12), Jersey Jack (POST 7), and When I Go (POST 14) — then single Modern Sound (POST 4) in Race 6, spread in Race 7, and use Remi's Moon (POST 2) with Trouble Time (POST 4) in Race 8.

The best value single race bets on the card, ranked by reward potential:

Super Costly (POST 9) in Race 6 at 15-1 with Luis Saez represents the best longshot value play on the card. A $5 win ticket is the proper investment. Saez accepting a 15-1 morning line mount is a signal that the horse has legitimate conditioning and recent form that the public has not yet recognized.

Uncle With Money (POST 2) at 12-1 in Race 7 with Saez from Post 2 in a 14-horse field is the second-best longshot angle. The inside post gives Uncle With Money (POST 2) a trip advantage that partially offsets the long odds.

Inordinary (POST 5) at 3-1 in Race 2 with the Sharp/Ortiz combination represents genuine value in what looks like a competitive three-horse race at the top. At 3-1 versus two 2-1 co-favorites, Inordinary (POST 5) is getting slightly advantageous odds for a horse with comparable credentials.

For the closer of the card in Race 9, the superfecta is the primary play. A 16-horse maiden claiming route has the potential to produce a large exotic payoff. Structure a superfecta using Fraudster (POST 11) and Market Strategy (POST 10) as top choices with Cosmopolitan Lady (POST 13), Shot At Perfection (POST 12), Sister Wife (POST 5), Crystal Frost (POST 14), and Perpetua (POST 16) filling the remaining positions.

Finally, bettors looking for a daily double to cap the card should consider pairing Remi's Moon (POST 2) from Race 8 with FRAUDSTER
