Track Surface & Bias

With dirt and turf racing scheduled, expect Churchill Downs to favor forwardly placed runners if the surfaces remain dry and well-maintained. Recent Churchill Downs results showed dirt speed horses benefiting from inside-to-mid posts at sprint distances, while longer dirt races produced some advantage for mid-to-outside positions; turf routes generally favored rail and inside trips. Stalkers with tactical speed should be preferable to deep closers, particularly if the track dries quickly after any isolated shower activity.

Handicapper’s Edge

Give extra credit to horses capable of securing position early without being committed to a fast pace.
