Dr. Kapur Springs Perryville Stakes Upset at Keeneland

Dr. Kapur turned a chaotic stretch drive into the biggest score of his career Saturday, weaving through tiring rivals before catching Chief Wallabee in the final strides of Keeneland's $350,000 Perryville Stakes (G3). The 24-1 outsider won the seven-furlong test by a neck in 1:24.25, with Obliteration another nose back in third. Keeneland's official race report confirmed the result and the colt's first graded stakes victory.

Tyler Gaffalione kept Dr. Kapur near the back as Roscoe's Brother led through an opening quarter in :22.11 and reached the half-mile in :44.59. The pace continued to take its toll into the stretch, where Chief Wallabee moved to the front near the sixteenth pole. Gaffalione angled Dr. Kapur wide before threading him through the late traffic, and the colt found another gear once a seam opened inside the sixteenth pole.

The victory validated the form Dr. Kapur brought from Parx Racing. In his previous start, he finished second behind Stradale in the Sept. 19 Gallant Bob Stakes (G2), and he had won a six-furlong allowance at Saratoga two starts earlier. Those efforts suggested that the Saffie Joseph Jr. trainee had already developed into a useful late-running sprinter, but the Perryville supplied the breakthrough against a deeper group that included 4-5 favorite Deep Flame and California invader Roscoe's Brother. BloodHorse's report identified the late rally as the decisive factor.

Dr. Kapur is owned and bred by Kenneth L. Ramsey and was named for Dr. Sandip Kapur, the New York surgeon who performed Ramsey's kidney transplant. A son of Mo Town out of the Kitten's Joy mare Ava's Kitten, he improved to three wins and two seconds from eight starts and raised his earnings to $435,357, according to Keeneland. The result also gave Gaffalione a second consecutive start aboard the colt in which he produced a winning or runner-up finish.

The race established Dr. Kapur as more than a pace-dependent allowance horse. He handled a fast opening half, absorbed a difficult trip, and still produced the strongest finish when the leaders began to weaken. Chief Wallabee, a consistent stakes performer who has now finished second or third in five stakes, held the place spot, while Obliteration's nose defeat underscored how tightly the race came together at the wire. At $50.24, Dr. Kapur's Perryville victory was both a major betting upset and a credible springboard toward another graded sprint stakes.
