Bodacious Bay brings the strongest recent form to Saturday's $300,000 Grade 2 Mother Goose Stakes, but an intriguing group of improving fillies gives the 1 1/16-mile Belmont Park feature more depth than its morning line suggests. The Grade 1 Cotillion winner drew post 7 for jockey Micah Husbands and trainer Saffie Joseph Jr., while unbeaten Intrepids Fantasy enters her first stakes race from post 10.
According to New York Racing Association, Bodacious Bay has never finished worse than second in five starts. She won her maiden at Churchill Downs in June, finished second in the Grade 3 Monmouth Oaks, then changed hands privately and immediately delivered a career-defining performance in the Sept. 19 Cotillion at Parx Racing. She defeated Kentucky Oaks winner Always a Runner by 3 1/4 lengths, with My Miss Mo, who had beaten her at Monmouth, finishing sixth. That is the clearest piece of form in the field.
Joseph has kept Bodacious Bay active without racing her since the Cotillion. NYRA reported that the Not This Time filly posted a bullet half-mile in 47.05 seconds Oct. 25 over Saratoga's Oklahoma dirt training track. She also owns a useful family profile, being a half-sister to dual graded stakes winner Royal Spa. The concern for bettors is not ability but price: a Grade 1 winner carrying 124 pounds is entitled to favoritism, yet a short quote leaves limited margin if one of the lightly raced rivals takes another step forward.
Intrepids Fantasy is the most compelling alternative on raw improvement. The Gary Capuano trainee is 3-for-3, including an 8 1/4-length optional-claiming victory against older horses Sept. 3 on a muddy, sealed Delaware track. That effort earned an 87 Beyer Speed Figure, following an 83 for a 12 3/4-length score in July. Capuano told NYRA that the filly must answer three questions at once: she has raced around two turns, is trying stakes company and will compete without Lasix for the first time. Her final prep was a five-furlong work in 1:02.60 on Oct. 31, and the trainer's decision to work her twice at a mile suggests he has been preparing her for sustained pressure rather than a brief sprint.
Cognition may offer the cleaner tactical proposition. The Chad Brown trainee returned from more than a year away to win a seven-furlong maiden race at Keeneland on Oct. 2, controlling the pace before scoring by four lengths in 1:27.08. Brown assistant Lee Vickers told NYRA that Cognition remains in the same form as before that victory and noted her natural speed. From the rail, Flavien Prat could try to establish position early, an especially important assignment in a one-turn race where an outside trip can become costly if the pace is not demanding.
The proven stakes runners add volatility. Iron Orchard is a Grade 1 winner for Steve Asmussen but exits an unplaced finish in the Cotillion; Tap to Open, trained by Brad Cox, was fourth in that same race after winning at the listed level. Ati Girl was fifth in the Grade 1 Alabama, while Tahlequah owns graded-stakes experience and a third in the Grade 2 Charles Town Oaks. The official Belmont entries list all 11 fillies for Race 9, scheduled for 3:43 p.m. Eastern. Bodacious Bay deserves top billing, but Cognition's speed and Intrepids Fantasy's upward trajectory make this a race in which the favorite must prove that the Cotillion was a launch point, not a peak.
