The Pick Pony Handicapper's Report is published daily and provides analysis of all races on the card. A Pick Pony analyst prepares the report, so selections may differ from the Pick Pony Expert Picks, which are based on the consensus of all Pick Pony analysts.

The Saturday card at Fair Grounds features a solid 11-race lineup highlighted by two stakes events for 3-year-olds on the turf: the $100,000 Woodchopper Stakes and the $100,000 Pago Hop Stakes. The program also includes competitive maiden special weights and allowance contests that often serve as stepping stones for the later stakes in the meet.

Weather and Track Conditions

The weather in New Orleans is expected to be unseasonably warm with a high near 82°F and a low of 64°F. A Dense Fog Advisory is in effect for the morning hours, which may impact early training but should lift before post time. There is a 25% chance of precipitation, but the main track is expected to be Fast and the turf course Firm.

The rail on the turf course is set at 7 feet. At this setting, the course typically plays fair but can favor horses with tactical speed who can save ground around the turns. Wide trips are often penalized more severely with the rail out, as the turns become tighter. On the main dirt track, inside speed has been a formidable weapon early in the meet, especially in sprint races.

Race 1

Post Time: 12:45 PM CST

Pace Analysis

In this 5 1/2-furlong turf sprint for 2-year-old maidens, speed is critical. Chasing Freedom and Bluegrass Town show signs of early foot and should be forwardly placed. With the rail at 7 feet, getting a position near the front before the turn will be advantageous.

Key Contenders

Bluegrass Town (#2) enters for trainer Brendan Walsh with Jose Ortiz aboard. Walsh is known for having his young turf horses ready to fire, and this colt fits the profile of a winner in this spot. His pedigree suggests he will handle the surface well, and the inside draw allows Ortiz to secure a ground-saving trip.

Tan Chulo (#1) draws the rail for trainer Tracy Tanner. While the rail post can be tricky in turf sprints if a horse doesn't break sharply, his workouts suggest he has the quickness to establish position.

Secondary Choices

Chasing Freedom (#6) from the Rob Atras barn is a threat. Atras ships well, and Paco Lopez is an aggressive gate rider who will likely send this gelding to challenge for the lead immediately.

Longshots

Noble Affair (#5) runs for the powerful Steven Asmussen stable. Asmussen's debut runners can sometimes be bet down, but if this one floats up in price, he offers value given the connections and the likely aggressive ride from James Graham.

Betting Strategy

Focus on the inside speed here. Bluegrass Town looks like the most probable winner, but Chasing Freedom is a must-use in exotics.

Selections

Win: Bluegrass Town (#2)
Place: Chasing Freedom (#6)
Show: Tan Chulo (#1)

Race 2

Post Time: 01:15 PM CST

Pace Analysis

This 1-mile claiming event on dirt features a mix of running styles. Joey's Lightening and Syvestar have shown speed in the past and may duel for the lead. If the pace heats up, it could set up for a stalker like Island Cabana.

Key Contenders

Syvestar (#2) drops into a competitive spot for trainer Shane Wilson. Despite a veterinary scratch earlier in the month, his return to the entries suggests he is ready. Paco Lopez taking the mount is a positive signal of intent.

Island Cabana (#5) has been consistent at this level. Jareth Loveberry rides for Justin Jeansonne, and this gelding should find a comfortable stalking trip behind the leaders. He often finds the board and is a reliable option in this class.

Secondary Choices

Spinning Aces (#4) has had some gaps in his running lines but fits well here on speed figures. If he can run back to his best form, he is a major player.

Longshots

Joey's Lightening (#1) could be dangerous if left alone on the lead from the rail. At a price, he is worth including in vertical wagers.

Betting Strategy

A win bet on Syvestar is a solid play if he stays near his morning line. An exact box of Syvestar and Island Cabana covers the most likely outcomes.

Selections

Win: Syvestar (#2)
Place: Island Cabana (#5)
Show: Spinning Aces (#4)

Race 3

Post Time: 01:45 PM CST

Pace Analysis

The 1-mile turf allowance optional claiming race should have a moderate pace. Pineland and Higgins Boat have shown the ability to be forward. Foligno may look to rate just off the pace.

Key Contenders

Foligno (#1) represents the Brad Cox barn with Marcelino Pedroza Jr. up. This 3-year-old colt has shown promise and draws the rail, which should allow him to save ground on both turns. He has the class to handle this field.

Higgins Boat (#3) is trained by Thomas Amoss and ridden by Jose Ortiz. He has been knocking on the door in similar conditions and should get the right setup today. His tactical speed is a major asset on this turf configuration.

Secondary Choices

Enlighten (#6) starts for Mike Maker, a trainer who excels with turf routers. Jareth Loveberry is a strong turf rider, and this colt should be closing late.

Longshots

Out of Deductions (#7) runs for Chris Block. Block's horses often outperform their odds on the grass, and this gelding has the late kick to pick up the pieces if the pace collapses.

Betting Strategy

Foligno and Higgins Boat look like the class of the field. A small exacta box with these two is the primary play.

Selections

Win: Foligno (#1)
Place: Higgins Boat (#3)
Show: Enlighten (#6)

Race 4

Post Time: 02:15 PM CST

Pace Analysis

In this 6-furlong dirt sprint for maidens, expect Favorite Day and Elnajd to show early interest. The pace should be honest, favoring horses who can sit close and finish.

Key Contenders

Favorite Day (#1) from the Kenny McPeek barn has shown talent in morning drills. Brian Hernandez Jr. is the go-to rider for this stable, and the rail draw dictates a forward trip.

Elnajd (#4) is a Shadwell homebred trained by Brad Cox. These connections command respect, and his pedigree suggests he should be quick. Marcelino Pedroza Jr. stays aboard, indicating the horse is live.

Secondary Choices

Chappelle (#5) runs for Whitworth Beckman. Beckman has been sending out live runners recently, and this gelding could improve in his second or third start.

Longshots

Woodson (#2) adds Ben Curtis for trainer Peter Eurton. West Coast shippers to Fair Grounds often bring hidden form, and Eurton is a capable conditioner.

Betting Strategy

Elnajd looks like the one to beat. He can be singled in multi-race wagers or played to win.

Selections

Win: Elnajd (#4)
Place: Favorite Day (#1)
Show: Chappelle (#5)

Race 5 – Woodchopper Stakes

Post Time: 02:45 PM CST

Pace Analysis

This 1 1/16-mile turf stakes for 3-year-olds features Coco Cool and Montador as potential pace setters. The pace shouldn't be blistering, which favors those near the front.

Key Contenders

Montador (#6) is the likely favorite for trainer Michael Stidham. He has shown excellent form on the turf and should be ideally placed by Brian Hernandez Jr. His consistency makes him the most reliable horse in the race.

Coco Cool (#1) starts from the inside for Mike Maker. He has the speed to control the race from the rail or sit in the pocket. Maker is deadly in these middle-distance turf stakes.

Secondary Choices

Flying Mohawk (#5) has run well in graded company before, including a second in the Jeff Ruby Steaks. He had a rough trip last time out but returns to a course where he has won before. He is a strong rebound candidate.

Longshots

Faber (#2) provides value with Paco Lopez aboard. If the pace slows down, Lopez is excellent at stealing races on the front end or just off it.

Betting Strategy

Flying Mohawk offers the best value if ignored at the windows. A win bet on him and an exacta box with Montador is the recommended strategy. Note that Savion (#7) is also entered in Race 7; check scratches.

Selections

Win: Montador (#6)
Place: Flying Mohawk (#5)
Show: Coco Cool (#1)

Race 6

Post Time: 03:15 PM CST

Pace Analysis

A 6-furlong dirt allowance where Synthetic appears to be the primary speed. Conejo Chapin may try to keep him honest, but the favorite looks faster on paper.

Key Contenders

Synthetic (#3) looks like a standout here. The morning line suggests he is heavily favored for a reason, likely possessing superior speed figures to this field.

Gem Buoy (#5) trained by Patricia West gets Paco Lopez. He is a logical alternative if the favorite falters or gets caught in a duel.

Secondary Choices

Conejo Chapin (#4) has shown flashes of ability and could hit the board with a clean trip.

Longshots

Native Red (#8) draws the outside and could close for a share if the pace melts down.

Betting Strategy

Synthetic is likely too short a price to bet to win. Look to single him in horizontal wagers or play cold exactas with Gem Buoy underneath.

Selections

Win: Synthetic (#3)
Place: Gem Buoy (#5)
Show: Conejo Chapin (#4)

Race 7

Post Time: 03:45 PM CST

Pace Analysis

This 1-mile turf allowance has a large field, making the trip crucial. Savion (if he runs here) and Contribution should be forward. Traffic trouble is a major risk with 14 entrants.

Key Contenders

Contribution (#1) trained by Brad Cox draws the rail. Axel Concepcion will need to work out a trip, but the colt has the talent to win this condition.

Savion (#9) is cross-entered in the Woodchopper but fits this condition better. If he runs here, he is a top contender for trainer Cherie DeVaux.

Secondary Choices

Drilling for Gold (#14) draws the extreme outside, which is a significant disadvantage at this distance on the turf. However, Ben Curtis is a clever rider, and the horse has ability. He will need a brilliant ride to win.

Bosun (#5) runs for Joe Sharp. Sharp is having a strong meet, and this one should be competitive.

Longshots

Marcus Gift (#2) could be a sneaky player at a price for trainer Adrianne DeVaux.

Betting Strategy

This is a spread race in Pick 5/Pick 4 sequences. Contribution is the safest play, but coverage is needed.

Selections

Win: Contribution (#1)
Place: Savion (#9)
Show: Bosun (#5)

Race 8

Post Time: 04:15 PM CST

Pace Analysis

In this 6-furlong dirt allowance, Evan On Earth and Benji Star project to be the speed of the race. South Bend Tom will be doing his best running late.

Key Contenders

Benji Star (#7) possesses excellent tactical speed (“Fastest Stalker”) which is often the winning profile at this distance. Jose Ortiz riding for Michael Stidham is a high-percentage combination.

Evan On Earth (#3) is quick (“Fast Leads”) and could take them gate to wire if allowed to settle on the lead. Brian Hernandez Jr. knows the track bias well.

Secondary Choices

South Bend Tom (#1) is a closer who needs a pace meltdown. If the top two engage in a speed duel, he will be the beneficiary.

Confront (#4) from the Brad Cox barn is also dangerous and fits right in with this group.

Longshots

Lucky Romance (#2) is a closer who could clunk up for a minor award at big odds.

Betting Strategy

Bet Benji Star to win. He sits the perfect trip just off the speed of Evan On Earth.

Selections

Win: Benji Star (#7)
Place: Evan On Earth (#3)
Show: Confront (#4)

Race 9 – Pago Hop Stakes

Post Time: 04:45 PM CST

Pace Analysis

The Pago Hop for 3-year-old fillies on turf features Hear the Queen and Bracelet as key players. The pace should be fair.

Key Contenders

Bracelet (#9) runs for Brad Cox and has shown versatility on the turf. She has faced graded company and finds a slightly easier spot here. The outside post is a slight concern, but she has enough tactical speed to clear.

Sea To Sky (IRE) (#1) represents the potent Cherie DeVaux barn. European imports often thrive in these spots, and the rail draw helps. Declan Cannon is a capable turf pilot.

Secondary Choices

Hear the Queen (#2) is the “other” Cox runner but cannot be dismissed. Marcelino Pedroza Jr. rides, and she could be the value of the race if the public overbets Bracelet.

Longshots

Unmerited Favor (#6) runs for Kenny McPeek. McPeek's fillies often improve late in their 3-year-old year, and she could surprise at a price.

Betting Strategy

Bracelet is the most likely winner, but Sea To Sky offers an intriguing alternative. An exacta box with these two is a solid play.

Selections

Win: Bracelet (#9)
Place: Sea To Sky (IRE) (#1)
Show: Hear the Queen (#2)

Race 10

Post Time: 05:15 PM CST

Pace Analysis

A 1 1/16-mile dirt race for 2-year-old fillies. Lit Up and A. P.'s Girl should show speed stretching out.

Key Contenders

Lit Up (#1) from the Bret Calhoun barn has a pedigree that suggests she will handle the two turns. The rail draw is perfect for a first-time router to save ground.

Majestical (#6) ships in for Peter Eurton with Jose Ortiz named. This indicates serious intent, and she likely has been working well for this engagement.

Secondary Choices

A. P.'s Girl (#3) also trained by Eurton, gets Brian Hernandez Jr. The fact that Eurton ships two for this race is a strong signal to watch both.

Longshots

Lady Law (#4) is another Calhoun entrant. Axel Concepcion rides, and she could be the one to upset the top choices.

Betting Strategy

Watch the board on the Eurton pair. Lit Up is a strong local hope. Box Lit Up and Majestical.

Selections

Win: Lit Up (#1)
Place: Majestical (#6)
Show: A. P.'s Girl (#3)

Race 11

Post Time: 05:45 PM CST

Pace Analysis

The nightcap is a maiden claiming sprint for Louisiana-breds. These races are often chaotic. Spiritual Duty and Deal Me Trips look like the speed.

Key Contenders

Pardoned (#6) is the probable favorite for Tom Amoss. Dropping in for a tag, this gelding should have the class edge over this field.

Deal Me Trips (#8) runs for Larry Rivelli, a trainer with a high win percentage with claimers. Jareth Loveberry stays aboard, which is a positive sign.

Secondary Choices

Spiritual Duty (#1) draws the rail and will likely be sent hard by Isaac Castillo. If he can clear, he might not look back.

Longshots

Make Me a Deal (#2) offers value at 6-1 or higher. He could pick up the pieces if the pace collapses.

Betting Strategy

Pardoned looks solid, but in the last race of the day, coverage is wise. Use Pardoned and Deal Me Trips in the late double.

Selections

Win: Pardoned (#6)
Place: Deal Me Trips (#8)
Show: Spiritual Duty (#1)

Jockey Notes and Insights

Jose Ortiz has a loaded book today, with key mounts in several races (Bluegrass Town, Higgins Boat, Benji Star, Majestical). When he rides for Brendan Walsh or Michael Stidham, the win percentage is typically high.

Brian Hernandez Jr. remains a local favorite who rides the Fair Grounds dirt oval exceptionally well. Look for him to save ground and make decisive moves on the turns. He is live on Montador (R5) and Favorite Day (R4).

Paco Lopez is an aggressive gate rider. On a day where the track might be fast, his ability to put horses like Syvestar (R2) and Gem Buoy (R6) into the race early makes them dangerous.

Trainer Notes and Insights

Brad Cox has a strong hand in the stakes races with Foligno (R3), Contribution (R7), and Bracelet (R9). His horses are usually well-meant when spotted in allowance and stakes company at Fair Grounds.

Cherie DeVaux continues to saddle live runners, especially on the turf. Her European import Sea To Sky (R9) and Savion (R7) deserve close attention.

Shane Wilson is a trainer to watch in the claiming ranks (Race 2, Race 11). He often improves horses off the claim or off layoffs.

Best Wagering Strategies and Value Plays

Best Bet of the Day: Race 6 – Synthetic (#3). This horse appears to have a significant class and speed figure advantage over the field.

Best Value Play: Race 5 – Flying Mohawk (#5). Coming off a troubled trip but with back class, he could offer a nice price in the Woodchopper Stakes against the favorites.

Late Pick 4 Strategy (Races 8-11):
Leg 1 (R8): 3, 7
Leg 2 (R9): 1, 9
Leg 3 (R10): 1, 6
Leg 4 (R11): 6, 8
Cost for $0.50 play: $8.00
