The Monday card at Mahoning Valley Race Course features a mix of claiming and maiden events, highlighted by an Allowance contest in Race 9. With temperatures forecasted to struggle to reach the mid-20s, the track surface will likely be tight and fast, though horseplayers should keep an eye on how the surface handles the freezing conditions. The “Best of Ohio” season has concluded, and we are now deep into the winter grind where form cycles and class drops become paramount.

Weather and Track Conditions

Forecast:
Conditions for Austintown, Ohio on Monday, December 8, 2025, are expected to be frigid. The high is forecasted near 23°F with overnight lows dipping into the single digits or low teens. Expect cloudy skies throughout the day.

Track Condition:
Given the freezing temperatures and lack of significant recent precipitation in the immediate forecast, the dirt track should be labeled Fast. However, winter tracks at Mahoning can sometimes carry moisture that doesn't evaporate quickly.

Track Bias:
Mahoning Valley is historically known for a specific profile during the winter months. The track tends to favor horses with early speed, particularly those drawn in inside posts (1-4). In sprints (6 Furlongs), the rail can be a significant advantage if the surface is sealed or packed down. Closers often struggle to make up ground against the flow of the race unless the pace is exceptionally hot. For the route races (1 Mile), the bias is slightly less pronounced but still favors horses who can secure forward position before the first turn.

Race 1 Analysis

Post Time: 12:15 PM ET

Pace Analysis

Ghostagain draws the rail and possesses the natural speed to exploit the inside bias. Expect Jose Bracho to send him hard to protect the rail. Bella's Charm also shows tactical speed and may press the issue from the center.

Key Contenders

Bella's Charm is the class of the field on paper. The three-year-old gelding was last seen on October 30 at Indiana Grand running in a Maiden Claiming $15,000 event. Today, he drops precipitously to the $5,000 level. This is a significant class plunge that often signals a win-now intent from the connections. Ghostagain is the primary threat. Drawn in post 1 for the high-percentage trainer Justin Radosevich, he fits the track profile perfectly. If he breaks clean, he could wire this field.

Secondary Choices

Predecessor has been inconsistent but fits this low-level maiden claiming company. Angel Diaz is a capable pilot who can get the most out of these types. Game Maker (IRE) is an interesting entry for trainer Eric Reed but drawing the outside post 8 in a sprint at Mahoning can be a difficult hurdle to overcome against rail speed.

Betting Strategy

The race likely comes down to the class dropper Bella's Charm versus the bias-aided speed of Ghostagain. A win bet on Bella's Charm is the logical play, but an exacta box with Ghostagain covers the bias angle.

Selections

Bella's Charm
Ghostagain
Predecessor

Race 2 Analysis

Post Time: 12:43 PM ET

Pace Analysis

Rosetta from the rail and Hollaback from post 2 should ensure a lively pace along the inside. Angel I'm Not also has speed, which could create a contested pace scenario that might set up for a stalker.

Key Contenders

Extra Crafty is a veteran mare who brings consistent form to this race. She last ran on October 27 at Mahoning Valley in a Claiming $15,000 event, finishing well enough to suggest she fits perfectly here. Unlike others who are moving up in class, she represents a lateral move with proven ability at this level. Rosetta is a three-year-old filly drawing the rail. While young, the post position advantage and the aggressive riding of Alexander Chavez make her a dangerous threat to steal the race on the lead.

Secondary Choices

Hollaback is a steady performer for trainer Timothy Hamm. She fits well here but needs to avoid a speed duel with the inside horse. She's a Soldier is a toss for many handicappers today as she exits a Claiming $6,500 race on November 13. Moving up to the $15,000 level is a negative class signal, suggesting she may be overmatched against this group.

Betting Strategy

Extra Crafty offers the most reliable form in a race filled with question marks. Win bet on Extra Crafty.

Selections

Extra Crafty
Rosetta
Hollaback

Race 3 Analysis

Post Time: 01:11 PM ET

Pace Analysis

Unpredictable Bay has shown flashes of speed and should be involved early. Charger carrying only 121 lbs could be sent for the lead to utilize the weight break.

Key Contenders

Unpredictable Bay is the horse to beat. He ran on November 18 at Mahoning in a $4,000 claimer and was competitive. The slight bump to $5,000 today is negligible, and he retains his form well. Alexander Chavez in the irons is a major plus. Collectorate is a consistent check-earner who fits these conditions. Jose Bracho stays aboard, and the horse should be closing late if the pace heats up.

Secondary Choices

Stomping Moon has back class but can be inconsistent. If he wakes up, he fits with these. Good On Ya is a nine-year-old veteran who knows his way around the oval, though his best days are likely behind him.

Betting Strategy

Unpredictable Bay looks solid in this spot. A win bet is warranted, and he serves as a strong single for horizontal wagers.

Selections

Unpredictable Bay
Collectorate
Stomping Moon

Race 4 Analysis

Post Time: 01:39 PM ET

Pace Analysis

This 5 1/2 furlong sprint will be fast. Chipotle Pepper has back class speed, and Remember Me will likely show early foot from the rail.

Key Contenders

Chipotle Pepper is the standout class play of the day. She was last seen running in an Allowance race ($18,000 purse) at Mountaineer on November 3. Dropping all the way to a $5,000 claimer is a massive class relief. Unless she is completely unsound, she should dominate this field on class alone. Remember Me draws the rail and comes out of a cancelled race on November 28. She fits well at this level and the inside draw is a major advantage at this distance.

Secondary Choices

Princessofthenorth gets the services of Deshawn Parker, a Hall of Fame-caliber jockey who excels at Mahoning Valley. This mare can pick up the pieces if the top two falter. American of Course is an eight-year-old veteran who knows how to find the board but may lack the winning punch of the top choices.

Betting Strategy

Chipotle Pepper is a “free square” on class analysis. Win bet and key in all exotics.

Selections

Chipotle Pepper
Remember Me
Princessofthenorth

Race 5 Analysis

Post Time: 02:07 PM ET

Pace Analysis

A field of two-year-old Ohio-breds often results in chaotic pace scenarios. Shallowbrook from the rail and Red Ohio Bred will likely gun for the front.

Key Contenders

Chasing Orion has the benefit of recent experience, having run in a Maiden Special Weight on November 20. That recency and experience over the track are invaluable for juveniles. Fernando Salazar Becerra is a strong jockey choice. Dr Spirito also exits a similar race on November 5. He has had time to recover and train, and David Haldar is a capable rider for these connections.

Secondary Choices

Shallowbrook draws the rail for his debut or near-debut run. In two-year-old races at Mahoning, the rail horse often gets a brave trip. Red Ohio Bred fits on pedigree and connections.

Betting Strategy

Box the experienced runners Chasing Orion and Dr Spirito in exactas.

Selections

Chasing Orion
Dr Spirito
Shallowbrook

Race 6 Analysis

Post Time: 02:35 PM ET

Pace Analysis

In this two-turn mile event, Supply Chain and Royal Dragoon figure to control the tempo. The pace should be moderate, favoring those near the lead.

Key Contenders

Royal Dragoon is the horse to beat. Trained by Johanna Urieta and ridden by Deshawn Parker, this horse hits all the high-percentage angles at Mahoning Valley. Parker is a master of judging pace in route races here. Supply Chain exits a November 4 race at this level and has shown the ability to handle the distance.

Secondary Choices

Verbier is a grinder who will be running at the end. Rocco Bowen is an aggressive rider who suits this horse's style. Runaway Harry has outside speed potential but must overcome the post.

Betting Strategy

Royal Dragoon is a prime win candidate. Play him to win and key him over Supply Chain and Verbier in exactas.

Selections

Royal Dragoon
Supply Chain
Verbier

Race 7 Analysis

Post Time: 03:03 PM ET

Pace Analysis

Mister Mobil is an eight-year-old with plenty of back class speed. Oaks Honey from the rail will likely try to protect position, ensuring an honest pace.

Key Contenders

Hartstein looks formidable here. Another Urieta/Parker entrant, this five-year-old gelding has the tactical speed to sit just off the leaders and pounce on the far turn. He is a consistent runner at this level. Red Head Kid represents the Radosevich barn, which is always dangerous in Ohio-bred claimers. Erik Barbaran rides, adding to the appeal.

Secondary Choices

Mister Mobil gets a weight break with the apprentice rider and carries only 119 lbs. If he gets loose on the lead, he could be hard to catch. Derby Included is a deep closer who needs a pace meltdown to succeed.

Betting Strategy

Hartstein is the most logical winner. A small win bet on Mister Mobil is a viable saver if the track is playing very fast.

Selections

Hartstein
Red Head Kid
Mister Mobil

Race 8 Analysis

Post Time: 03:31 PM ET

Pace Analysis

Braggadocious and Kykeon should be forwardly placed. This mile race likely won't feature a blistering pace, which advantages the forward runners.

Key Contenders

Braggadocious enters off a November 18 effort at this $7,500 level. He fits perfectly and Jay Bernardini is one of the top trainers on the grounds. Luis Batista aboard is a lethal combination with Bernardini. Finistere ran on November 3 at this level and is a consistent check-earner. He should be in the mix late.

Secondary Choices

Cowboy Justice has the class to compete here but needs to work out a trip from the middle of the pack. Ready for Action drops in from tougher spots and could wake up at a price.

Betting Strategy

The Bernardini/Batista combination on Braggadocious is the strongest angle. Win bet.

Selections

Braggadocious
Finistere
Cowboy Justice

Race 9 Analysis

Post Time: 03:59 PM ET

Pace Analysis

Electric Melody from the rail will have to go. I Belong First has shown speed in routes and will likely press the pace.

Key Contenders

I Belong First is the class of the field. She ran in a $35,100 Allowance on November 5 and was competitive. Staying at the same level today, she faces a group that looks slightly softer on paper. Compute This fits well here for trainer David Wolochuk. She has the stalking style that often works well in these female route races.

Secondary Choices

Electric Melody is the speed of the speed. If the track is playing to the inside bias, she could take them all the way. Pride and Attitude is a solid exotic filler.

Betting Strategy

I Belong First looks like a standout. Win bet.

Selections

I Belong First
Compute This
Electric Melody

Race 10 Analysis

Post Time: 04:27 PM ET

Pace Analysis

Stoptalkingsarah has speed and draws the outside, which may force Angel Diaz to send her hard to clear the field. Hello Evelyn from the inside should also be forward.

Key Contenders

Stoptalkingsarah is the clear pick. She has run in two straight Maiden Special Weight races on November 6 and November 25. That recency and form foundation give her a massive edge over a field filled with lighter resumes. Evan Come Home also ran on November 6 and looks to be the main danger, though she must improve to turn the tables.

Secondary Choices

Hello Evelyn has the rail and could improve in her second or third start. Raven's Honor is an older maiden who might pick up a share.

Betting Strategy

Stoptalkingsarah is a likely single in the late double.

Selections

Stoptalkingsarah
Evan Come Home
Hello Evelyn

Jockey Notes and Insights

Deshawn Parker:
The veteran rider continues to be a dominant force at Mahoning Valley, particularly in route races. His ability to gauge pace and save ground is unmatched at this oval. Watch for him on Royal Dragoon (Race 6) and Hartstein (Race 7).

Luis Batista:
Batista is the go-to rider for the powerful Jay Bernardini barn. When they team up, the win percentage is typically very high. His mount on Braggadocious (Race 8) is a prime example of this dangerous combination.

Jose Bracho:
Bracho is riding aggressively and successfully, especially on speed horses. His pairing with trainer Justin Radosevich on Ghostagain (Race 1) is a key angle to start the card.

Trainer Notes and Insights

Jay Bernardini:
The Bernardini barn excels with claiming horses and class droppers. His runners often show improved early speed. Braggadocious (Race 8) fits his winning profile perfectly.

Johanna Urieta:
Urieta places her horses aggressively and they are almost always live when entered at Mahoning. Her duo of Royal Dragoon (Race 6) and Hartstein (Race 7) look like two of the strongest contenders on the card.

Robert C. Cline:
Cline sends out several runners today, including Bella's Charm (Race 1) who is taking a massive class drop. Cline is known for identifying the right level for a win, and this drop is a major signal.

Best Wagering Strategies and Value Plays

The Best Bet:
Race 4: Chipotle Pepper. The drop from Allowance company to a $5,000 claimer is the most significant class move on the card. If she is healthy, she outclasses this field significantly.

The Value Play:
Race 1: Ghostagain. While Bella's Charm will take money on the drop, Ghostagain's rail draw and natural speed on a bias-favoring track could result in a wire-to-wire victory at fair odds.

The “Cold” Pick:
Race 2: She's a Soldier. Moving up in class from $6,500 to $15,000 is a negative angle. Handicappers should look to play against her despite any perceived form.

Suggested Late Pick 3 (Races 8-10):
Race 8: Braggadocious, Finistere
Race 9: I Belong First
Race 10: Stoptalkingsarah
Cost is low for a potentially solid payout.
