Keeneland opens its 2026 Spring Meet with a four-stakes card totaling $2.15 million in purses. The centerpiece is the 89th running of the Grade 1 Central Bank Ashland Stakes ($750,000), a critical Kentucky Oaks prep awarding 200 qualifying points to the winner. The card also includes the Grade 2 MiddleGround Capital Beaumont, the Grade 3 UK HealthCare Transylvania (turf), and the listed Lafayette. The Beaumont was moved to Opening Day due to Easter falling on April 5 with no Sunday card. First post is 1:00 PM ET.

Weather and Track Conditions

Forecast calls for a warm high of 81–83°F with a 70% chance of afternoon thunderstorms. Bettors should monitor whether early rainfall arrives before the first race. A sealed or wet main track typically intensifies Keeneland's already strong early-speed bias on dirt. The turf rail is set at 20 feet. Spring turf surfaces at Keeneland carry enough give early in the meet to favor stalkers and closers in grass events.

Track Bias and Post Position Notes

On dirt routes, inside posts 1–3 won 62% of races at the 2025 spring meet; speed horses on or near the pace won 65% of dirt routes. Closers from four lengths back won only 12%. In dirt sprints, front-end pace horses won 55% of races. On turf, the bias fully reverses — stalkers won 40% of turf routes, closers 37%, and pure speed types only 23%. Post position is balanced on grass. Bettors who apply the dirt speed bias to turf races at Keeneland consistently undervalue closers and stalk-and-pounce types on the lawn.

Race-by-Race Notes

Race 1 — Maiden Special Weight | 4.5 Furlongs Dirt | $90,000 | 2-Year-Olds | 1:00 PM

Key Contenders: Waggley (6) and Suspicions (8) represent the Wesley Ward barn. Ward has won with 44% of his starters in 4.5-furlong 2yo dashes at Keeneland since 2021. Waggley (6) is a mature Life Is Good filly with three local works over the strip and strong workout observations. Joe Joe Dude (2) for Ben Colebrook is a legitimate challenger whose sire Practical Joke gets 17% winners from debuting dirt sprint runners.

Secondary Choices: Suspicions (8) is Ward-trained from the first Corniche crop and flashed acceleration when asked in his most recent visible work. Bourbon Town (5) carries 119 lbs with Luis Saez up for trainer Rey Hernandez.

Longshots: Super Saiyajin (3) and Fortune King (1) are both from Sergio Donjuan's barn with modest pedigree support. Tigrado (7) draws 30-1 morning line for Michel Douaihy. Autism Honor G (4) is a 116-lb filly from Israel Acevedo. Cross Power (9) is owner-trained and the clear throwout at 30-1.

Race 2 — Starter Allowance | 7 Furlongs Dirt | $63,000 | Fillies 3-Year-Olds | 1:32 PM

Scratches: Authentic Angel (10) — Veterinarian; Trapped (7) — Main Track Only.

Key Contenders: Miss Call (5) is the consensus top choice for trainer Kenneth McPeek and Brian Hernandez Jr. — she is a stakes-placed allowance horse described as holding her own against better company. Princess Woejee (9) under Tyler Gaffalione won a maiden auction race at Colonial Downs as the heavy favorite, with a troubled performance that understates her true ability.

Secondary Choices: N Z Holly (11) is the Oaklawn shipper for Rodolphe Brisset and Flavien Prat, a jockey-trainer combination with proven Keeneland success. She broke her maiden wire-to-wire and will benefit from the added furlong. Edey (4) for William Morey switches from Turfway synthetic to dirt — Morey carries a 19% conversion rate over five years with this surface change. Menkaure (8) at 6-1 is flagged as a live price play with an Irad Ortiz Jr. jockey upgrade.

Longshots: Golden Thread (12) for Eoin Harty carries 122 lbs without a weight allowance. Traject (1) draws the inside rail at 20-1. Frosty Mojito (6) races without Lasix. Alta Avenue (3) at 20-1 and Nonstop Vino (2) at 30-1 are at the bottom of the projected order.

Race 3 — Denali Julep Cup Allowance | 5.5 Furlongs Turf | $130,000 | 4-Year-Olds and Up | 2:04 PM

Key Contenders: Spiced Up (8) for William Mott and Junior Alvarado is the consensus selection. He posted three strong New York turf sprint efforts in 2025, with form failures on surfaces that are well-documented as problematic for his running style. First-time blinkers are expected to help him maintain early contact. Camp Hale (3) for Ian Wilkes and Brian Hernandez Jr. is the designated Best Bet of the day among handicappers — he has made back-to-back wins on dirt and shown compelling turf ability in Palm Meadows workouts, described as moving like a dream on the lawn despite never racing on grass.

Secondary Choices: Donut God (9) for Brian Lynch and John Velazquez carries the field's highest Brisnet figure of 91 and showed natural talent and aggression in his turf workout. Whatchatalkinabout (4) is the Ward veteran switching from dirt — Ward's sire Dialed In gets only 8% winners in first-time turf sprints, and Ward is 2-for-9 with this surface switch on this course.

Longshots: Boltage (1) for David Jacobson and Gaffalione is worth including underneath in trifectas. Amoudi Bay (7) for Lindsay Schultz is a fringe contender with an 81 Brisnet figure. Hogie The Player (6) for Troy Wismer at 20-1 needs significant pace help. Our Starry Night (2) and Surf City (5) are outclassed pace types.

Race 4 — Wild Aire Julep Cup Maiden Special Weight | 6.5 Furlongs Dirt | $110,000 | Fillies 3-Year-Olds | 2:36 PM

Scratch: Grant's Gretchen (6) — Trainer.

Key Contenders: Phantom Blue (9) for Brendan Walsh and Tyler Gaffalione is the dominant wagering choice — a $1.2 million Fasig-Tipton purchase with universally strong workout reports and a trainer known for debuting horses ready. Bodacious Bay (7) is the primary value play at 12-1 for Rodolphe Brisset — prepped at Keeneland all winter, a sibling to Grade 2 winner Royal Spa from the same barn, ran straight in stretch work videos, and held her own working alongside Beaumont entrant Kingsolver (4) on March 20.

Secondary Choices: Lady Diversity (8) for Cherie DeVaux and Jose Ortiz worked inside stakes-placed Paige Turner and held her own. Only Me (5) is the Ward-trained Vekoma filly — Vekoma sires 23% winners from first-time dirt sprint starters. Where Luck Lives (12) for Brian Lynch and Joel Rosario was a troubled fourth in her only start as a $725,000 purchase and has been pointing to this spot since July.

Longshots: Hypnotica (3) for Chad Brown and Flavien Prat is the blue-chip trainer choice. Ships Inn (10) for Gregory Foley has Irad Ortiz Jr. up at 8-1. Movie Night (11), Kristi's Spirit (4), Pinto (15), Daring Move (16), Laken (2), Mika's Way (13), Belle (14), and Lil Braveheart (1) are fringe runners or also-eligible fillers.

Race 5 — 78th Lafayette (Listed) | 7 Furlongs Dirt | $400,000 | 3-Year-Olds | 3:08 PM

Key Contenders: Arctic Beast (3) for Mike Maker and Ricardo Santana Jr. is the value selection at 3-1. He has won all four career starts against New York-bred competition by a combined 22.75 lengths, including three stakes wins. His only open-company try was compromised by an unfitting two-turn distance at Remington. His March 30 half-mile work was described as finishing with great energy. Knock It Off (2) for Steve Asmussen and Jose Ortiz is the 2-1 morning line favorite — talented but vulnerable given the inside-post pace-pressure scenario at a short price.

Secondary Choices: Carson Street (6) for Brendan Walsh and Flavien Prat adds first-time blinkers and ran second behind Incredibolt, who won the Street Sense and dominated the Virginia Derby. He sets up best as a pace stalker in an honest seven-furlong sprint. Comport (1) for Eddie Kenneally and Tyler Gaffalione won the Ellis Park Juvenile at this distance and had a sharp local drill for the spring. Oscar's Hope (7) for Kinnon LaRose and Irad Ortiz is a stakes winner worth including in trifectas at 9/2.

Longshots: Trouble Calling (4) for Greg Foley and Luis Saez at 7/2 makes his graded company debut. Star Sweeper (5) at 30-1 for Louis Linder Jr. is the clear throwout.

Race 6 — Claiborne Julep Cup Allowance | 1.125 Miles Turf | $120,000 | 4-Year-Olds and Up | 3:40 PM

Scratches: Side Street (13) — Veterinarian; Start Mo Up (11) — Veterinarian; Tiz Freedom (10) — Also Eligible, did not draw in.

Key Contenders: Without (IRE) (1) for H. Graham Motion and John Velazquez is the 1.80 morning line favorite from the rail draw — he broke his maiden at Deauville on the all-weather and has been solid in U.S. appearances. Noble Confessor (15) for Todd Pletcher and Flavien Prat is listed as an also-eligible but should draw in — handicappers identify him as the most likely winner if he makes the field, citing two 2025 performances as superior to this company and a compromised trip in his last race.

Secondary Choices: Sumood (9) for Brendan Walsh and Tyler Gaffalione adds blinkers following a maiden breakthrough where the headgear was the key catalyst. Bite And Strike (4) for William Mott and Joel Rosario is a four-year-old gelding from a powerful operation. Mount Horeb (8) for Walsh is a seasoned course veteran at 6-1.

Longshots: House United (5) for David Jacobson and Irad Ortiz at 8-1. A Bourbon For Toby (7) for Thomas Morley at 8-1. Fort Thomas (2) for George Arnold at 15-1. Domingo (6) for Victoria Oliver at 15-1. Rocky Joy (16) for Jose Aranha at 8-1. Protective (12) for Mary Anne Howard at 20-1. The Dover Specter (3) for Kelsey Danner at 30-1. States' Rights (14) for Cherie DeVaux is the other also-eligible.

Race 7 — 41st MiddleGround Capital Beaumont (Grade II) | 7 Furlongs Dirt | $400,000 | Fillies 3-Year-Olds | 4:12 PM

Key Contenders: Sneaky Good (3) for Brad Cox and Flavien Prat is the 9-5 morning line favorite and consensus pick. Cox and Prat have won three of the last four Beaumont runnings. Her third-place finish in the Grade 3 Honeybee was substantially flattered when the runner-up returned to win the Fantasy Stakes with authority. Just Bluffing (2) for Greg Foley and Luis Saez is the prime upset candidate at 3-1 — she has tactical speed, returns to three-year-old company, and her workout showed instant and sustained acceleration when asked for run. Saez has a documented mastery of Keeneland's seven-furlong distance.

Secondary Choices: A Fine Chardonnay (7) for Ian Wilkes and Brian Hernandez Jr. won the Myrtlewood Stakes here in the fall and projects to run her best race of the year — she closes from off the pace and benefits from a genuine pace test. Baracca (5) for Brendan Walsh adds first-time blinkers at 6-1 from a trainer with a strong Opening Day record.

Longshots: Kingsolver (4) for Rodolphe Brisset and Irad Ortiz is a stakes winner stepping up sharply in class at 8-1. Wrong Shoes (6) for John Ortiz at 15-1. Coco Connect (1) for John Ennis at 30-1 is the definitive throwout.

Race 8 — 38th UK HealthCare Transylvania (Grade III) | 1.0625 Miles Turf | $600,000 | 3-Year-Olds | 4:44 PM

Scratch: Ganaas (11) — Stakes Scratch.

Key Contenders: Remember Mamba (7) for Cherie DeVaux and Jose Ortiz is the 7/2 morning line favorite. He has an open-lengths debut win at Keeneland last fall and a dominant allowance score at Fair Grounds. He has been specifically aimed at this spot all winter with encouraging recent work alongside Blue Grass starter Reagan's Honor. Vasy (IRE) (2) for Brendan Walsh and Flavien Prat brings a two-race win streak including a dominant Colonel Liam Stakes score at Gulfstream where he sliced through a tight opening more decisively than the margin indicated. Extending to 1 1/16 miles is the key test.

Secondary Choices: Noble Dynasty (3) for William Mott and Junior Alvarado was narrowly beaten in the same stakes race as Remember Mamba (7) and has been building toward this spot with a strong inside drill alongside a graded-stakes-winning filly. Attfield (4) for Thomas Morley and Ricardo Santana Jr. flopped on Turfway synthetic but had three solid New York turf efforts as a two-year-old, including a two-turn stakes win. Zeppelin (8) for George Arnold had undisclosed trip trouble in the Colonel Liam that is not fully reflected in the chart.

Longshots: Proton (1) for H. Graham Motion and John Velazquez at 4-1. Honey Dutch (10) for Whitworth Beckman and Gaffalione at 6-1. Street Beast (5) for Ben Colebrook at 6-1. Aces Honor (9) for Ethan West at 20-1. Time For America (6) for Michelle Nihei at 30-1 is the clear throwout.

Race 9 — 89th Central Bank Ashland (Grade I) | 1.0625 Miles Dirt | $750,000 | Fillies 3-Year-Olds | 5:16 PM

Key Contenders: Zany (3) for Todd Pletcher and Irad Ortiz Jr. is the 4-5 morning line favorite — an undefeated filly described by multiple handicappers as potentially special. She is 3-for-3 with Grade 2 wins in the Demoiselle (running a faster time and higher Beyer than the same-day Remsen winner Paladin) and the listed Suncoast Stakes, whose runner-up Life of Joy came back to win the Grade 2 Fair Grounds Oaks. Pletcher has won the Ashland with Malathaat (2021), Nest (2022), and Leslie's Rose (2024). Percy's Bar (2) for Ben Colebrook and Luan Machado is the primary danger at 3-1 to 3.5-1 morning line — she was controversially disqualified from a win in the Grade 1 Alcibiades and suffered severe trip issues in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies. Winter workouts have ranged from good to very, very good, and she is the only runner with both a win and a placing in Grade 1 company at Keeneland.

Secondary Choices: French Friction (4) for Mark Casse and Cristian Torres is undefeated in two starts (Oaklawn debut, Dixie Belle Stakes in slop) and projects as the most likely beneficiary if Zany (3) falters. Star Actress (7) for William Mott and Junior Alvarado is a half-sister to Breeders' Cup winner Just F Y I with demonstrated route ability. Omaha Bay (5) for Ian Wilkes and Javier Castellano at 12-1 has never started at a route distance.

Longshots: Hollybygolly (6) for Rodolphe Brisset and Tyler Gaffalione carries the field's lowest Brisnet figure of 72 at 20-1. Nycon (1) for D. Whitworth Beckman at 20-1 requires a catastrophic result ahead of her.

Race 10 — Betz Julep Cup Maiden Special Weight | 1 Mile Turf | $110,000 | 3-Year-Olds | 5:48 PM

Scratches: Supercharger (5) — Trainer; Tilson (15) — Veterinarian.

Key Contenders: Democracy Defender (10) for Jorge Abreu and Irad Ortiz Jr. is the consensus selection at 4-1 morning line. He finished second to Vasy (IRE) in a January Tampa maiden while enduring significant trip trouble — squeezed at the gate, steadied on the backstretch, forced wide on the turn — and still finished second. If Vasy (IRE) (2) runs well in Race 8, this form line earns a significant upgrade. Heading (2) for H. Graham Motion and John Velazquez also ran against Vasy (IRE) in that Tampa maiden, finishing third. He has been working well on Palm Meadows grass and projects to improve on the Keeneland turf.

Secondary Choices: Lemon's Law (4) for Riley Mott and Tyler Gaffalione was blocked when appearing to have won his Keeneland debut last fall, and his recent Gulfstream starts profile as targeted preps for this return. Prize Pick (1) for Brian Lynch and Joel Rosario at 5-1 has prior turf form and figures to press the early pace. Epic Horsepower (12) for Brian Lynch and Luis Saez adds first-time blinkers as a Constitution colt from an informed two-horse barn.

Longshots: Ravenous (3) for Brendan Walsh and Flavien Prat is a first-time starter worth including as a deeper saver at 10-1 — Walsh's debut record and Prat's selectivity make this horse live. Obelus (7) for Lindsay Schultz at 8-1. Newman (16) for Eddie Kenneally at 8-1. Cash Bonus (6) for Cherie DeVaux at 15-1. He's A Charmer (8) for Ethan West at 15-1. Drop Shot (9) for George Arnold at 20-1. Telecaster (11) for Hutch Holsapple at 20-1. Fatguyinlittlecoat (13) for Michael Maker at 30-1. In America (14) for Fergus Bogle at 30-1.
