Live racing resumes at Tampa Bay Downs after a brief break, setting the stage for an exciting Friday card as the Oldsmar oval builds anticipation for tomorrow's Festival Day 46, headlined by the Grade 3, $400,000 Esmark Tampa Bay Derby. Today's card features nine races with a healthy mix of maiden claimers, open claimers, maiden special weight events, and an allowance optional claiming affair. First post time is approximately 12:35 PM ET.
The nine-race card carries total purses exceeding $300,000, with the feature Race 6, an allowance optional claiming event at six furlongs on the dirt, offering a purse of $56,500. Two maiden special weight races on the turf (Races 3 and 5) each carry a $55,000 purse, attracting solid fields that include connections from leading national outfits like Chad Brown and Jorge Abreu. The dirt races range from claiming events at the $5,000 level up to $25,000 claimers, providing diverse wagering opportunities for horseplayers. The turf course is expected to play a significant role today with three of the nine races carded on the grass.
This is a transitional Friday with a preparatory feel before the stakes-heavy Saturday card that includes the Tampa Bay Derby, the Grade 2 Hillsborough Stakes, the Grade 3 Florida Oaks, and the Grade 3 Michelob Ultra Challenger Stakes. Several jockeys and trainers on today's card will also have significant mounts tomorrow, so watch for any changes in rider assignments that could affect today's entries.
Weather and Track Conditions
Friday's weather forecast for the Tampa area calls for a high near 90 degrees with an overnight low around 68 degrees. Morning conditions are expected to be in the upper 60s to low 70s with very high humidity, as dew points match the temperature readings. Sunshine should dominate through the afternoon hours, with conditions expected to remain mostly dry through approximately 3:00 PM. Rain chances increase later in the day, with 20 to 30 percent coverage possible toward evening. Winds will be light at 7 to 8 miles per hour.
Given the primarily dry forecast through the afternoon, the main dirt track should maintain a fast condition for the early and middle portions of the card. The turf course should be firm to good, favorable for the three grass races carded today. If any late-day showers materialize, they could affect the final race or two. Horseplayers should monitor conditions as the card progresses, but the expectation is for standard, fast conditions on both surfaces for the majority of the card.
The most recent racing day at Tampa Bay Downs (March 4) saw a fast dirt track and firm turf conditions. Similar conditions are expected today.
Track Bias and Post Position Analysis
Tampa Bay Downs is generally regarded as one of the fairest tracks in the country, lacking any dominant overall bias. However, meet-long data from the current 2025-2026 season (November 19 through March 1) reveals some clear tendencies that handicappers should factor into today's card.
On the dirt at six furlongs, 35% of winners have gone wire to wire, and early speed (E) is the dominant running style. Middle posts have been the most productive stall draws. At seven furlongs on the dirt, the wire-to-wire rate drops to 18%, with early/pressing (E/P) types faring best and outside post positions showing an edge. For one-mile-and-40-yard dirt routes, 19% of winners have led every step, early speed is again the dominant style, and middle to outside posts have been the strongest. At 1 1/16 miles on dirt, pressers (P) have held the advantage from middle posts, and the wire-to-wire rate is only 17%.
For turf routes, which apply to Races 3, 5, and 7 today, 24% of winners have gone wire to wire at the meet, and early speed has been the dominant running style, with middle posts performing best.
The most recent weekly data (February 23 through March 1) shows a slight shift. On 6-furlong dirt sprints, outside posts have been running well. At seven furlongs on dirt, no wire-to-wire winners were recorded that week, with E/P types from outside posts performing best. The most notable change is on turf routes, where stalker/closer types from rail and inside posts won most often during the final week of February.
The hot jockey in the most recent week was Sonny Leon, who rode six winners from 21 starts. Hot trainers included Juan Carlos Avila (4 wins from 10 starts) and H. Graham Motion (2-for-2).
For today's card, the key takeaway is to respect early speed on the dirt sprints, give pressers and stalkers an edge in the two-turn dirt events, and be aware that both early speed and stalking types can prevail on the turf, depending on the pace scenario.
Race 1 – Maiden Claiming $10,000 (Fillies and Mares, 3 and Up, 1 Mile 40 Yards, Dirt)
Post Time: 12:35 PM ET
Pace Analysis
This field features several horses with early foot. I'm Hungover (3) and Gambi (4) both show a leading running style in their past performance profiles, while Forget Tomorrow (7) and Curlina Star (1) both bring stalking/pressing tactics. Lady Lyla (2) has shown a front-running style as well. With multiple runners wanting the lead, expect a moderately contested pace that could set up for a horse with late run. At the one-mile-and-40-yard distance on the dirt, the meet-long bias data favors early speed from middle to outside posts, but the recent weekly trend shows pressers gaining more of an edge.
Key Contenders
Forget Tomorrow (7) is listed as the clear morning line favorite at 2/1 and tops the odds board for good reason. This 10-time starter has placed second twice and finished third once, with her most recent effort coming at the 1 1/16-mile distance at Tampa. She draws a mid-to-outside post that suits the track bias. Jockey Daniel Centeno, a six-time Tampa Bay Downs riding champion and the track's all-time leader with 1,605 victories, takes the mount. The combination of Centeno's experience and a stalking style profile that can sit just off the contested pace makes this one the most logical contender.
Curlina Star (1) is the second choice on the morning line at 5/2 and is the consensus pick from handicappers. She has been consistent, placing in three of her 10 starts, including a runner-up finish at the one-mile-and-40-yard distance at Tampa. Trainer Eniel Cordero hands the mount to Jose Batista, and the running-style data shows her as the fastest horse in the field who stalks. Drawing the rail is not ideal at this distance on the main track, but her tactical speed should allow her to save ground and make a move turning for home.
Secondary Choices
I'm Hungover (3) at 5/1 has placed twice in nine starts and ran a creditable fourth last out, beaten six lengths behind Queen Diana. She shows a mid-pack, early-pressing style. Jockey Charlie Marquez can keep her within striking distance, and if the pace materializes as expected, she could benefit from the front-end duel.
Sexpectations (6) at 6/1 has figures that suggest a win probability near 29%. She is lightly raced with seven starts and has shown a stalking style. However, her recent form has been uneven with a ninth-place finish in her last two turf tries. The question is whether the move back to dirt and the one-turn route will suit her better. Apprentice Ronaldo Rodriguez takes the mount.
Longshots
Jess's Brew (8) at 10/1 has hit the board in four of eight career starts, including a third-place finish at the seven-furlong distance at Tampa. She is a closer who makes late runs. In a race where the pace looks like it could be contested, closers could benefit. She is a worth a look underneath in exotic wagers.
New Centsation (5) at 8/1 is trained by hot trainer Juan Carlos Avila, who has been one of the most productive conditioners at the meet. She ran third last out, beaten only four lengths. The Avila angle adds intrigue, especially at a price.
Betting Strategy
The top two on the morning line, Forget Tomorrow (7) and Curlina Star (1), are the most likely winners, but neither offers tremendous value at short odds. An exacta box of Forget Tomorrow (7) with Curlina Star (1) is the foundational play, backed up by including I'm Hungover (3) in the third spot for a trifecta. For more adventurous bettors, keying Curlina Star (1) on top of Forget Tomorrow (7) with I'm Hungover (3) and New Centsation (5) underneath in an exacta wheel could yield better prices.
Selections
Win: Forget Tomorrow (7)
Place: Curlina Star (1)
Show: I'm Hungover (3)
Race 2 – Starter Optional Claiming (3 Year Olds, 6 Furlongs, Dirt)
Post Time: 1:05 PM ET
Pace Analysis
This is a compact six-horse field at six furlongs on the dirt. Valdero (1) is a confirmed leader who has won two of three career starts, both in front-running fashion. Hard Talk (3) is described as the fastest horse in the field with a stalking style. Cademan (2), despite being pegged as the slowest in pace, has shown front-running tendencies as well. With Valdero (1) and Hard Talk (3) both likely pressing the issue, and Union Cait (4) and Charlie Mac Mac (5) both closers, the pace could be honest enough to set up for late-running types if the front two hook each other. At six furlongs on the dirt, early speed and middle posts have been the dominant profile at the meet.
Key Contenders
Valdero (1) at 5/2 is the morning line and consensus favorite. He has won two of three career starts, both going gate to wire at Tampa, including wins at six furlongs and five-and-a-half furlongs. His win profile (36% win probability, 66% place probability) towers over the rest of this field. Marcos Meneses, who rides frequently at the track, retains the mount. Drawing the rail at six furlongs could allow him to break sharply and control the pace, but it is not the ideal post at this distance per the bias data. His class edge is substantial.
Cademan (2) at 3/1 brings meet leader Samuel Marin aboard for trainer Renaldo Richards, who is among the hot trainers at the meet. Cademan won his most recent start at 6.5 furlongs at Tampa and placed second prior to that, showing consistency. Marin's 19% win rate and 55% in-the-money rate at the meet make any horse he rides a factor.
Secondary Choices
Hard Talk (3) at 7/2 is the speed figure leader in this field with the fastest pace profile and a stalking style. He has won two of nine career starts and placed in the money five times. Jockey Charlie Marquez does not have the highest win rate, but the horse's tactical versatility at this level is appealing. He won going 6.5 furlongs and seven furlongs at Tampa and even captured a 1 1/16-mile turf race, showing range.
Union Cait (4) at 4/1 with Sonny Leon up is a closer who could benefit from a contested pace. He won at six furlongs on the dirt at Tampa and has shown an ability to close into the pace. Leon has been the hottest jockey in recent weeks (6 wins from 21 starts last week), and his closing tactics could capitalize if the pace is too fast up front.
Longshots
Charlie Mac Mac (5) at 5/1 has won two of five career starts but shows a slower/closing style that needs a hot pace to activate. Alonso Quinonez rides. At this price, he is worth using underneath the top three in exotic wagers.
Win Winnie Win (6) at 8/1 is trained by hot trainer Juan Carlos Avila and ridden by Cipriano Gil. He won at seven furlongs at Tampa and has in-the-money form, but his pace profile (fast/deep) suggests he tends to sit too far back in the early stages to win a six-furlong sprint.
Betting Strategy
Valdero (1) is the most likely winner but will be a short price. The value play is to use Valdero (1) in exactas over Hard Talk (3) and Union Cait (4). If you want to take a shot against the favorite, keying Cademan (2) on top with Marin's talent at a slightly better price is the contrarian approach. Trifecta box of Valdero (1), Cademan (2), and Hard Talk (3) is the base play.
Selections
Win: Valdero (1)
Place: Cademan (2)
Show: Hard Talk (3)
Race 3 – Maiden Special Weight (3 Year Olds, 1 Mile, Turf)
Post Time: 1:36 PM ET
Pace Analysis
The first of three turf races on the card, this 11-horse maiden special weight field is headlined by a sharp shipper from Gulfstream Park. On the turf this meet, early speed and middle posts have been the dominant profile, with 24% of winners going wire to wire. However, the most recent weekly data showed a shift to stalker/closer types and inside post positions performing well on the grass. With few confirmed front-runners in this field and two first-time starters (Instability (3) and Page Two (10)) whose running styles are unknown, the pace could be moderate.
Key Contenders
Democracy Defender (9) at 8/5 is the clear favorite and consensus top pick from handicappers. This American Pharoah colt out of trainer Jorge Abreu's barn shipped from Gulfstream Park where he narrowly missed in a stronger race, finishing second in his sole career start at 7.5 furlongs on the turf. He has a 100% in-the-money rate from one start and enters with what independent analysis calls the best figure in the field. Jockey Daniel Centeno, one of the top riders at the track, takes the mount. The wide post (9 of 11) is a slight concern in a one-mile turf race, but Centeno has the experience to navigate the traffic.
Instability (3) at 5/2 is a first-time starter from the powerful Chad Brown barn. Brown has an impressive 28% win rate and 67% in-the-money rate with his runners at Tampa this season. The Brown/Marin combination is potent, with Marin being the meet's leading rider. First-time starters from the Brown stable are always dangerous, and this Lope De Vega (IRE) colt has the breeding to handle the turf from the start. He drew a favorable inside-to-middle post that should allow Marin to settle him tactically.
Secondary Choices
Gold Light (5) at 7/2 has shown promise in two starts, including a third-place finish at seven furlongs on the dirt and a fourth at six furlongs. He is making his turf debut here for hot trainer Juan Carlos Avila, and his closer's style could benefit from a moderate pace. Cipriano Gil rides, and Avila's live meet (4 wins last week) adds confidence.
Landing Force (8) at 10/1 has been remarkably consistent, hitting the board in five of seven career starts with a 71% in-the-money rate. He ran third at 1 1/16 miles on the turf at Tampa last out and second prior to that at the same distance. He is a stalker who has the right running style for this course. Jose Ferrer rides, and at this price, he offers value as an underneath player.
Longshots
Neo Zapper (1) at 15/1 has placed in four of six career starts, showing excellent consistency with a 67% in-the-money rate. He has run on dirt exclusively but is bred to handle the turf. The rail draw is interesting given the recent weekly shift toward inside posts on the grass. At this price, he is worth using in exotic wagers.
Undertaker (7) at 15/1 ran second at one mile on the turf at Tampa on December 26, showing he can handle the surface and distance. He has over $304,000 in career earnings from 10 starts, which suggests he has faced better competition. Wesley Ho rides.
Betting Strategy
Democracy Defender (9) is the deserved favorite, but at 8/5 the price does not offer great stand-alone value. The play is to use Democracy Defender (9) as a single in multi-race wagers (Pick 3, Pick 4). For the race itself, exacta keys of Democracy Defender (9) over Instability (3), Gold Light (5), and Landing Force (8) provide solid coverage. For a price play, an exacta box of Instability (3) and Democracy Defender (9) is the safest.
Selections
Win: Democracy Defender (9)
Place: Instability (3)
Show: Gold Light (5)
Race 4 – Claiming $5,000 (Mares, 3 and Up, 7 Furlongs, Dirt)
Post Time: 2:09 PM ET
Pace Analysis
This is a competitive eight-horse field of claiming mares going seven furlongs on the dirt. At this distance, the meet data shows early/pressing types have been the dominant style, with outside posts performing well and only an 18% wire-to-wire rate. Several horses in this field show mid-pack running styles, suggesting the pace could be moderate. Killy Start (1) is listed as the fastest horse in the field with a stalking style, while Red Eleanor (8) and Gambi-like front-runners could set the early fractions.
Key Contenders
Jassai (5) at 7/2 draws the consensus nod from handicappers and benefits from having meet leader Samuel Marin in the saddle. She was claimed for $5,000 out of a recent race by new trainer Kathleen Guciardo after Marin rode her to a win at the one-mile-and-40-yard distance at Tampa. Her recent form shows a win and a second-place finish at Tampa. At seven furlongs on the dirt, her mid-pack/leading style should keep her within striking distance.
Killy Start (1) at 3/1 is the morning line favorite and brings the highest speed figures in the field. She has won 8 of 38 career starts with over $509,000 in earnings, the most in this field. She ships in from the mid-Atlantic circuit and has shown the fastest pace profile. The rail draw at seven furlongs is not ideal based on the bias data favoring outside posts, but her class advantage over this group is evident. Ronaldo Rodriguez rides at an apprentice weight of 113 pounds, a significant weight break.
Secondary Choices
Heavens Express (4) at 5/1 recently won at 6.5 furlongs on the dirt at Tampa and placed second at seven furlongs, showing she is competitive at this distance. She runs from mid-pack with a deep closing style and gets apprentice Kleiner Mejias, who has been riding at Tampa with some success. Trainer Enrique Hernandez has a solid 22% win rate at the track.
Foxy Lady (6) at 6/1 with Sonny Leon aboard is a consistent mare who has been in the money in 22 of 51 career starts. She races from mid-pack with a leading tendency and should sit a good trip just off the pace. Leon's recent hot streak makes this an attractive option at the price.
Longshots
Red Eleanor (8) at 10/1 recently won at 6.5 furlongs on the dirt at Tampa, showing she has current form. She tends to use early speed from outside posts, which aligns with the seven-furlong bias data. At this price, she could outrun her odds.
Olga (2) at 5/1 has seven wins and 18 in-the-money finishes from 36 career starts, with over $532,000 in earnings. She has been running at the six-furlong distance at Tampa recently and may find the stretch to seven furlongs challenging, but she has the class to compete.
Betting Strategy
This is a competitive race with no clear standout. Jassai (5) with Marin aboard is the most likely winner, but Killy Start (1) and Heavens Express (4) both have legitimate shots. A trifecta box of Jassai (5), Killy Start (1), and Heavens Express (4) is the base play. Adding Foxy Lady (6) for a wider trifecta or superfecta provides coverage at a reasonable cost.
Selections
Win: Jassai (5)
Place: Killy Start (1)
Show: Heavens Express (4)
Race 5 – Maiden Special Weight (Colts, Geldings and Ridglings, 3 and Up, 1 Mile, Turf)
Post Time: 2:40 PM ET
Pace Analysis
This 11-horse maiden special weight field on the turf features a heavy favorite in Arkhipov (8). Several horses in this field show front-running tendencies, including St. Emilion (3), American Direction (5), Xiao Long (6), and Positive Energy (9). This suggests the pace could be contested, which would benefit the deep-closing style of the favorite. Pacific Standard (11) is another horse with a leading style who could press the issue. The turf bias data favoring early speed and middle posts at the meet, but recent weekly trends favoring closers from inside posts, creates an interesting dynamic.
Key Contenders
Arkhipov (8) at 4/5 is the overwhelming morning line and consensus favorite. Trained by the elite Chad Brown (28% win rate at the meet) and ridden by Samuel Marin (the meet's leading jockey with 83-plus winners), this is the power play of the card. He ran a solid second at 1 1/16 miles on the Gulfstream turf in his last start and earned the fastest pace rating in the field with a deep-closing style. His figures tower over this field, and the Brown/Marin combination at Tampa has been nearly unstoppable. He should sit off the expected pace duel between St. Emilion (3), American Direction (5), and others, then run them down in the stretch.
Pacific Standard (11) at 5/1 is the alternative choice. He has placed in an astonishing 7 of 12 career starts, including back-to-back runner-up and third-place finishes at Tampa. His 75% in-the-money rate is outstanding for a maiden, and he carries the highest career earnings in the field at $142,500. Betty Jo Williams rides. The wide post (11 of 11) is a concern, but his front-running style means he will likely be on or near the lead early.
Secondary Choices
Power Of Will (4) at 8/1 has one show finish from seven career starts but ran fourth in a one-mile turf race at Tampa most recently. Israel Rodriguez rides, and while the win rate is not compelling, the stalking style could suit the expected pace dynamics.
American Direction (5) at 8/1 is the only horse in this field with a win, having captured a six-furlong dirt sprint at Tampa. He is stretching out to a mile on the turf for the first time, which is a question mark, but his early speed could keep him in contention if the pace is moderate. He carries the most career earnings of any non-maiden in the field at $178,640.
Longshots
St. Emilion (3) at 12/1 has been in the money in three of six career starts with a front-running style on turf. He ran second at one mile on the turf in a previous start, showing he can handle the distance and surface. Antonio Gallardo, who has a 22% win rate at the meet, takes the mount. If he gets an uncontested lead, he could wire the field at a generous price.
Complete Response (1) at 12/1 makes his second career start for Mark Casse, one of the top trainers in North America (22% win rate). He debuted at 1 1/16 miles on the dirt at Gulfstream, which was likely not his ideal surface. The switch to turf and the addition of Sonny Leon could spark improvement. The rail draw aligns with the recent turf bias shift toward inside posts.
Betting Strategy
Arkhipov (8) is the Best Bet of the Day. At 4/5 he will not offer win-bet value, but he is the horse to single in multi-race wagers. Use him as a Pick 3 and Pick 5 anchor. For the race itself, exacta keys of Arkhipov (8) over Pacific Standard (11), St. Emilion (3), and Power Of Will (4) provide the best structure. For longshot hunters, a trifecta key of Arkhipov (8) in the top spot with Pacific Standard (11), Power Of Will (4), and American Direction (5) filling the minor spots offers value.
Selections
Win: Arkhipov (8)
Place: Pacific Standard (11)
Show: Power Of Will (4)
Race 6 – Allowance Optional Claiming $10,000 (3 and Up, 6 Furlongs, Dirt)
Post Time: 3:11 PM ET
Pace Analysis
This is the feature race of the card, a small but competitive field of six going six furlongs on the dirt. El Principito (3), Khozeiress (1), and Neshume (2) all show mid-pack leading tendencies, while Dreaming Of Kona (4) is a confirmed front-runner. Mad House (6), the figure leader, has shown a deep-closing style but also possesses fast tactical speed. Chrome Ghost (5) presses from mid-pack. The pace should be honest with at least Dreaming Of Kona (4) pressing the issue up front, which could benefit the closers. At six furlongs on dirt this meet, early speed from middle posts has been the dominant profile.
Key Contenders
Mad House (6) at 7/5 on the morning line is the figure leader in this field with the highest win probability (37%) and a dominant 40% win rate from 10 career starts. He ships from the mid-Atlantic circuit where he has won at Parx and other tracks at this distance. Sonny Leon, who has been the hottest rider at the track, takes the mount. His deep-closing style means he needs the pace to be honest, but with multiple speed types in the field, that seems likely. His speed figures are substantially higher than the rest of this group.
Chrome Ghost (5) at 2/1 is the consensus pick from handicappers and a horse for the course. He has a 29% win rate with six victories from 21 career starts, including a win at 6.5 furlongs at Tampa and a win at six furlongs at Gulfstream. Jockey Daniel Centeno rides for trainer Gerald Bennett, who has been one of the most successful conditioners at the meet. Chrome Ghost's mid-pack pressing style and 33% win rate at this post position distance are strong credentials.
Secondary Choices
El Principito (3) at 4/1 is a Gerald Bennett trainee who has five wins from 29 career starts and over $476,000 in lifetime earnings. He won at six furlongs on the dirt at Tampa in a recent start and has consistent in-the-money form. Jose Ferrer has ridden him to an 82% show rate at this distance. He could press the pace and hold on for a minor award or outrun his odds if the closers fail to fire.
Khozeiress (1) at 8/1 has Sam Marin aboard, which always demands attention. This horse has five wins from 27 career starts with over $753,000 in career earnings, the most in this field by a wide margin. He has tactical speed and could sit a good trip from the rail.
Longshots
Dreaming Of Kona (4) at 10/1 is a confirmed front-runner who has won four of 28 career starts. If the other speed types allow him to get loose on the lead, he could steal this at a generous price. Scott Spieth rides for wife/trainer Aldana Spieth, a combination that has a 21% win rate.
Neshume (2) at 10/1 won at six furlongs on the dirt at Tampa in his last start, showing current good form. He has four wins from 20 career starts. If the pace collapses, his closing style could carry him into the money.
Betting Strategy
Mad House (6) and Chrome Ghost (5) are the clear top two, and an exacta box of these two is the foundation play. For trifecta, add El Principito (3) and Khozeiress (1) in the third position. If you want to take a shot against the favorites, the exacta of Chrome Ghost (5) over Mad House (6) at a slightly better price is appealing given Chrome Ghost's (5) course form.
Selections
Win: Mad House (6)
Place: Chrome Ghost (5)
Show: El Principito (3)
Race 7 – Claiming $16,000 (Colts and Geldings, 3 and Up, 1 1/16 Miles, Turf)
Post Time: 3:42 PM ET
Pace Analysis
This is the largest field of the day with 14 runners going 1 1/16 miles on the turf. The wide field presents significant traffic and post-position challenges. Uncle Truly (7) and Lord Knows (4) both show front-running tendencies, while Drama Chorus (1) is a mid-pack leader. Several closers, including Smart Striker (2), Spanish Noble (3), and Create Trouble (5), will look to rally from behind. With this many runners and multiple speed types, the pace could be hotly contested in the early stages, benefiting those who can settle off the pace and make a late run. The turf route bias data shows middle posts performing best at the meet, but inside posts and closers gaining ground in the most recent weekly sample.
Key Contenders
Uncle Truly (7) at 3/1 is the morning line favorite with Samuel Marin aboard. He has five wins from 25 career starts with over $357,000 in earnings. His fastest-in-the-field pace profile combined with a leading style means he will try to control the tempo from a favorable middle post. Marin's talent at Tampa is undeniable, and trainer Darien Rodriguez has been running at an extraordinary 46% win rate recently.
Mad Dog N Joe (8) at 4/1 has five wins from 40 career starts with nearly $293,000 in earnings. He ran second at 1 1/16 miles on the turf at Tampa in his last start, showing current good form at this distance and surface. Jose Ferrer rides, and his mid-pack leading style should keep him in contention throughout.
Secondary Choices
Create Trouble (5) at 9/2 is trained by Richard Dutrow Jr. and ridden by Cipriano Gil. He has four wins from 19 career starts and ran third at 1 1/16 miles on the turf at Tampa last out. His stalking style could benefit from the expected contested pace in this large field.
Smart Striker (2) at 5/1 has five wins from 38 career starts and recently ran third in back-to-back turf races at Tampa. His closing style and consistent form make him a logical contender, especially with the recent weekly bias shift toward closers on the turf. Wesley Ho rides.
Spanish Noble (3) at 6/1 is trained by perennial Tampa leader Kathleen O'Connell and has Sonny Leon aboard. He ran fourth at 1 1/16 miles on the turf at Tampa last out and has a closing style that suits the expected pace dynamics. Leon's recent hot streak adds appeal.
Longshots
Rashid (6) at 15/1 is the consensus longshot pick from handicappers. Trained by Fausto Gutierrez (36% win rate), he has three wins from 17 career starts. Antonio Gallardo rides. At this price, he is a worthwhile inclusion in exotic wagers.
Drama Chorus (1) at 8/1 has nine wins from 33 career starts, the most wins of any horse in this field, with nearly $470,000 in career earnings. He ran second at 1 1/16 miles on the turf at Tampa last out. Drawing the rail could be advantageous given the recent weekly shift toward inside posts on the grass.
Lord Knows (4) at 15/1 has won six of 26 career starts with a front-running style. He comes into this race off two consecutive wins and could try to steal the race on the lead at a generous price.
Betting Strategy
This is a wide-open affair with 14 runners, making it ideal for exotic wagering. A Pick 3 from here through Race 9 with multiple horses alive in each leg is the recommended approach. For this race specifically, a trifecta key of Uncle Truly (7) with Mad Dog N Joe (8), Create Trouble (5), Smart Striker (2), and Drama Chorus (1) provides solid coverage. The superfecta is the real opportunity in a 14-horse field.

Pace Analysis
A smaller seven-horse field at seven furlongs on the dirt. Gallo De Fuego (6) is a confirmed front-runner who has won at seven furlongs at Gulfstream Park and 6.5 furlongs at Saratoga, showing he can handle quality competition. Mr. Peeks (1) has the fastest pace profile in the field with a stalking style. Sebastianthe First (2) and Develop Product (5) are mid-pack types who should sit just off the pace. At seven furlongs on the dirt, the bias data shows early/pressing types from outside posts performing best.
Key Contenders
Mr. Peeks (1) at 7/5 is the morning line and consensus favorite. He has the fastest pace profile in the field and a stalking style that should allow him to sit just off Gallo De Fuego (6) before making his move. He has two wins from 14 career starts with over $232,000 in earnings. His most recent races were at Gulfstream Park at the sprint distances, and the step up to seven furlongs at Tampa is a positive move. Marcos Meneses rides for trainer Beau Chapman. His win profile gives him a 17% win probability and 74% show probability, suggesting he will be competitive.
Gallo De Fuego (6) at 2/1 has Samuel Marin aboard and a front-running style that should have him on or near the lead from the break. He won at seven furlongs at Gulfstream and at 6.5 furlongs at Saratoga, showing he has competed at higher levels than this field. Trainer Jose Gallegos has a 27% win rate at the meet. If Marin can control the pace from the outside post, this horse could wire the field.
Secondary Choices
Sebastianthe First (2) at 9/2 won at seven furlongs on the dirt at Tampa in his last start and placed second prior to that at six furlongs. Cipriano Gil rides, and his mid-pack stalking style should keep him within striking distance of the leaders. He has a strong 26% win probability and 93% show probability in his profile.
Develop Product (5) at 8/1 has two wins from 11 career starts, including a recent win at six furlongs on the dirt at Tampa. Charlie Marquez rides. He is stretching out from six furlongs to seven, which is a question mark, but his mid-pack stalking style suits the distance.
Longshots
Take The Gold (3) at 10/1 has a recent win at seven furlongs on the dirt at Tampa, showing he can handle the exact conditions he faces today. He is inconsistent (two wins from 22 career starts), but his most recent form is encouraging. Israel Rodriguez rides.
Zapata (4) at 20/1 has been racing on the turf in his recent starts, and the switch to dirt at seven furlongs is a questionable move. He is best left out of exotic wagers unless you are looking for a true bomb.
Betting Strategy
This is a two-horse race between Mr. Peeks (1) and Gallo De Fuego (6) at the top of the market. An exacta box of these two is the base play. For trifecta, add Sebastianthe First (2) in the third spot. If you want to go against the grain, keying Gallo De Fuego (6) on top over Mr. Peeks (1) and Sebastianthe First (2) in an exacta wheel could yield a better return if Marin takes the race from the front.

Race 9 – Claiming $8,000 (Fillies and Mares, 3 and Up, 5.5 Furlongs, Dirt)
Post Time: 4:43 PM ET
Pace Analysis
The nightcap is a full 12-horse field of fillies and mares going five-and-a-half furlongs on the dirt. This sprint distance on the dirt should favor early speed, and several runners in this field want the lead. Megantheebattalion (7) is a front-running type, as are Goshaki Goshaki (11) and Taprixie (1). Mi Bella Genio (6) and Smoocherro (10) both show early pressing styles. With this many speed types in a full field, the pace could be torrid, setting up for stalkers and closers. Soundtrack (5) has the fastest pace rating in the field with a stalking style, and Fussy Girl (9) is a mid-pack closer.
Key Contenders
Mi Bella Genio (6) at 3/1 is the morning line and consensus favorite. She has two wins from nine career starts and recently won at seven furlongs on the dirt at Tampa. Cipriano Gil rides for hot trainer Juan Carlos Avila, who has been one of the top trainers at the meet (4 wins last week). Her early pressing style should keep her in the mix, and the Gil/Avila combination has been effective. She drops to the 5.5-furlong distance after racing at longer distances, which could mean added speed.
Soundtrack (5) at 4/1 has the fastest pace figures in the field and a stalking style that is ideal for a sprint with contested early fractions. She has a 71% in-the-money rate from 17 career starts. Wesley Ho rides for trainer Nik Goodwin, who has a 25% win rate at the post position. She won at six furlongs at Tampa most recently and should sit a perfect trip just off the speed.
Secondary Choices
Megantheebattalion (7) at 5/1 gets Samuel Marin aboard for trainer Jon Arnett (25% win rate). She has two wins from 11 career starts and a front-running style. With Marin's talent, she could try to gun it from the gate and steal the race. Her 64% in-the-money rate shows consistency.
Smoocherro (10) at 6/1 won at six furlongs on the dirt at Tampa in a recent start and has two wins from 10 career starts. Marcos Meneses rides, and his 41% win rate at this distance is impressive. She has a stalking style and should benefit from the expected hot pace.
Gold Stamp (2) at 6/1 won at six furlongs on the dirt at Tampa and has a strong 62% in-the-money rate from 13 career starts. Sonny Leon rides, and the inside post draw could be advantageous in a sprint with a full field.
Longshots
Fussy Girl (9) at 10/1 is trained by Gerald Bennett and has one win from 13 career starts with a 46% in-the-money rate. She recently ran second at six furlongs on the dirt at Tampa, showing good current form. Jose Batista rides. As a mid-pack closer, she could benefit most from a contested pace scenario and is an excellent candidate for underneath exotic positions.
Special Affair (12) at 12/1 has over $287,000 in career earnings, the most in this field, from 41 career starts. She is a mid-pack closer who ran second at 6.5 furlongs at Tampa in her last start. At this price, she is worth using in exotic wagers, particularly superfectas.
Betting Strategy
This full field sprint is the ideal race for spread exotic plays. A trifecta key of Mi Bella Genio (6) with Soundtrack (5), Megantheebattalion (7), Smoocherro (10), and Gold Stamp (2) in the second and third spots provides good coverage. The superfecta is the big opportunity here with 12 runners. For a Pick 3 or Pick 4 starting in earlier races, spread liberally in this leg.

Jockey Notes and Insights
Samuel Marin is the runaway leader at the 2025-2026 Tampa Bay Downs meet with over 83 winners, 28 more than runner-up Samy Camacho. He rides in multiple races today, including mounts for Chad Brown (Instability (3) in Race 3 and Arkhipov (8) in Race 5), and picks up the favored Jassai (5) in Race 4, Uncle Truly (7) in Race 7, and Gallo De Fuego (6) in Race 8. He is the jockey to beat in every race he enters. Last season's champion has continued to impress with come-from-behind rallies and aggressive gate-to-wire efforts alike, riding with supreme confidence and timing.
Daniel Centeno is a six-time Tampa Bay Downs riding champion and the track's all-time leader with 1,605 victories and 59 stakes winners. He earned the January Jockey of the Month award and is riding with renewed confidence this season. He has key mounts in Race 1 (Forget Tomorrow (7)), Race 3 (Democracy Defender (9)), Race 6 (Chrome Ghost (5)), and Race 7 (Coaches Meeting (9)). His experience navigating the Tampa turf course is particularly valuable in today's grass races.
Sonny Leon, the 2022 Kentucky Derby winner aboard Rich Strike, has been the hottest jockey in recent weeks, winning six of 21 starts last week. He rides Union Cait (4) in Race 2, Beach Beamer (2) in Race 3, Foxy Lady (6) in Race 4, Complete Response (1) in Race 5, Mad House (6) in Race 6, Spanish Noble (3) in Race 7, and Gold Stamp (2) in Race 9. His closing style has been particularly effective in the recent track conditions.
Cipriano Gil earned the December Jockey of the Month award and has been a rising force at the track. He has built strong relationships with leading trainer Juan Carlos Avila and rides Mi Bella Genio (6) in Race 9, Gold Light (5) in Race 3, Chrome Ghost (5) in the absense of his agent pairing, Xiao Long (6) in Race 5, Sebastianthe First (2) in Race 8, and Create Trouble (5) in Race 7.
Jose Ferrer brings over 3,700 career wins of experience to the track and has mounts in Race 3 (Landing Force (8)), Race 6 (El Principito (3)), and Race 7 (Mad Dog N Joe (8)).
Sara Hess is the leading apprentice jockey at the meet but has been noted as a “cold” rider in the most recent weekly data, going 0-for-13 with only one place and one show. She rides Lady Lyla (2) in Race 1, Positive Energy (9) in Race 5, Go Go Star (8) in Race 9, and Mr Crowley (12) in Race 7. Caution is warranted when backing her mounts at short prices.
Trainer Notes and Insights
Chad Brown is one of the top trainers in North America and has an impressive 28% win rate with a 67% in-the-money rate at Tampa this season. He saddles two debut or near-debut runners today: Instability (3) in Race 3 (a first-time starter on the turf) and Arkhipov (8) in Race 5. Brown first-time starters are always dangerous propositions, and his success rate with debut runners on the turf is well documented nationally. He is the former employer of Race 3 trainer Jorge Abreu, who spent nine years as a Brown assistant.
Juan Carlos Avila is the leading trainer at the meet and was named a hot trainer in the most recent weekly data with four wins from 10 starts. He saddles New Centsation (5) in Race 1, Gold Light (5) in Race 3, Win Winnie Win (6) in Race 2, and Mi Bella Genio (6) in Race 9. His overall meet win rate of 25-28% makes all of his starters live contenders.
Gerald Bennett has been a dominant force at Tampa Bay Downs, having won eight consecutive training titles from 2015 through 2023. He trains Chrome Ghost (5) and El Principito (3) in Race 6 as well as Fussy Girl (9) in Race 9. Having two runners in the feature race gives him a strategic advantage.
Darien Rodriguez has been running at an extraordinary 46% win rate with his recent starters and trains Uncle Truly (7) in Race 7. This is a trainer to watch closely.
Jon Arnett is the trainer who has saddled the most winners at the meet by sheer volume. He trains Megantheebattalion (7) in Race 9 and has a 25% win rate. His relationship with leading jockey Samuel Marin is well-established.
Jorge Abreu, who trained under Chad Brown for nine years, sends out Race 3 favorite Democracy Defender (9). His 18% win rate and 55% in-the-money rate at Tampa are solid, and he has identified a potential star in this American Pharoah colt.
Kathleen O'Connell, who won the Tampa training title in 2023-2024 with 48 winners, trains Spanish Noble (3) in Race 7. Her experience at this track is unmatched.
Mark Casse, one of North America's leading trainers (22% win rate, 47% ITM nationally), sends out Complete Response (1) in Race 5. He is one of few trainers at this level competing in a maiden special weight on the Tampa turf.
Best Wagering Strategies and Value Plays
The average winning odds at the Tampa Bay Downs meet are 5.32-1, with favorites winning 40% of the time and hitting the board 74% of the time. This means that on a nine-race card, approximately three or four favorites will win. The key for profitable wagering is identifying which favorites are vulnerable and which will hold up.
The best bet of the card is Arkhipov (8) in Race 5. Despite the short 4/5 morning line, the Chad Brown/Samuel Marin combination with a horse who has already shown top-class turf form at Gulfstream is the safest single on the card. Use him as a single in Pick 3 (Races 5-6-7) and Pick 5 sequences where available.
The best value play is Rashid (6) in Race 7 at 15/1 morning line. Trainer Fausto Gutierrez has a 36% win rate, and Antonio Gallardo is a capable rider. In a 14-horse field where traffic and pace dynamics can produce wild results, this is a live longshot who could outrun his odds.
For multi-race wagers, consider the following approaches. In the late Pick 4 (Races 6-7-8-9), single Mad House (6) or Chrome Ghost (5) in Race 6, spread wide in Race 7 (Uncle Truly (7), Mad Dog N Joe (8), Create Trouble (5), Smart Striker (2), Drama Chorus (1)), single or near-single Mr. Peeks (1) and Gallo De Fuego (6) in Race 8, and spread in Race 9 (Mi Bella Genio (6), Soundtrack (5), Megantheebattalion (7), Smoocherro (10)).
The daily double linking Race 1 and Race 2 offers an opportunity to key Forget Tomorrow (7) and Curlina Star (1) in Race 1 over Valdero (1), Cademan (2), and Hard Talk (3) in Race 2. This double should return a modest but consistent profit.
For Pick 5 sequences, the ideal structure is to single Arkhipov (8) in Race 5 and spread wider in the surrounding legs. The average Pick 5 payoff at the meet is over $20,000, and with a 14-horse field in Race 7 and a 12-horse field in Race 9, the late Pick 5 (if available from Race 5 onward) could produce a substantial return.
The morning line odds suggest the most playable underlays are Arkhipov (8) in Race 5 (likely to go off at even money or lower) and Democracy Defender (9) in Race 3 (likely to go off close to 8/5). The most playable overlays could be Soundtrack (5) in Race 9 at 4/1 (she has strong current form and the fastest figures in the field) and Mad House (6) in Race 6 at 7/5 (his figure advantage over this group is significant, but he is shipping in from outside the circuit, which creates some public skepticism that could inflate his odds).
In Race 7, the massive 14-horse field on the turf is the race most likely to produce a generous exotic payoff. Superfecta plays in this race, using Uncle Truly (7) and Mad Dog N Joe (8) in the top two spots with a spread of four or five others in the third and fourth spots, could be the most profitable single-race wager on the card.
The key to profitable play today is to identify the short-priced favorites who are most likely to win (Arkhipov (8) in Race 5, Democracy Defender (9) in Race 3, Valdero (1) in Race 2) and use them as singles in multi-race sequences, while spreading wider in the more contentious races (Race 4, Race 7, Race 9) where the fields are larger and the favorites more vulnerable.
