Welcome to a special Friday night card at Turfway Park. Tonight's lineup presents a fascinating mix of high-potential juvenile maidens and a series of races featuring “fallen stars”—classy older horses like One Timer, Slip Mahoney, and Time for Truth who are appearing in claiming ranks well below their back class. The feature is Race 6, a competitive allowance optional claiming event at 1 1/16 miles.
Handicappers should pay close attention to the “Turfway drop,” where horses shipping in from major circuits (Churchill, Keeneland, NYRA) take significant class drops to find their level on the synthetic surface. The card also features full fields, which is typical for Turfway, ensuring value on the tote board.
Weather and Track Conditions
The forecast for Florence, Kentucky, calls for typical late December conditions—cold and cloudy with temperatures hovering near freezing. However, Turfway Park's Tapeta surface is impervious to winter precipitation and freezing temperatures. Expect the track to be listed as Fast.
In recent weeks, the Tapeta surface has shown a specific profile: fair for closers in route races, but possessing a distinct positional bias in sprints. Horses capable of securing position in the “second flight” (just behind the speed) have fared best. The inside rail has been neutral, but being stuck extremely wide on the turns remains a death knell in the one-mile contests.
Best Wagering Strategies and Value Plays
The most compelling angle on this card is the “Fallen Class” angle. Several horses (One Timer in Race 2, Slip Mahoney in Race 3, Time for Truth in Race 4) are entered for claiming tags that are a fraction of their past earnings potential. The strategy here is to bet against the “suspicious drop” if the horse shows low energy in the paddock, but to respect the back class if they look fit.
Value Play of the Day: Race 4, #10 Time for Truth. He has faced much tougher company and the drop to $30,000 claiming, while steep, puts him in a race where his natural speed should clear the field.
Best Bet: Race 6, #4 Tapit Shoes. He finds a field devoid of a true standout and his recent form suggests he is sitting on a peak effort.
Jockey Notes and Insights
Luan Machado continues to ride the Tapeta better than anyone in the colony. He excels at timing his moves in route races (1 Mile and 1 1/16 Miles). When he is on a horse with “stalking” ability, upgrade the horse significantly.
Gerardo Corrales and Adam Beschizza are the “speed riders” to watch. If they are on horses breaking from inner posts in sprints (6 Furlongs), expect them to send hard.
Apprentice watch: Pietro Moran (Race 2, One Timer) is getting live mounts from big barns like Rivelli and Maker. This is a sign of confidence from top connections.
Trainer Notes and Insights
Larry Rivelli (Race 2) is known for aggressive placement. The drop of One Timer to $8,000 is shocking but fits Rivelli's pattern of winning with horses at their absolute floor. He wins at a high percentage with this move, even if it signals the horse is nearing the end of its career.
Mike Maker (Race 6, 8, 10) is the king of the claiming-to-stakes move, but tonight he is managing horses in maintenance mode. Watch for his runners in the routes (Race 6, Race 8) where his horses often improve significantly second-time over the surface.
William Walden (Race 5) has incredible stats with his synthetic runners. Envision in Race 5 should be ready to fire on debut.
Race 1
Post Time: 5:55 PM
6 Furlongs Synthetic | Maiden Special Weight
This event for juvenile fillies features several first-time starters and auction maidens. The key to this race is identifying horses with quick gate speed, as inexperienced 2-year-olds often struggle to pass horses on the Tapeta if they fall too far behind early.

Key Contenders
Bresha (5) represents the Wayne Catalano barn, which is dangerous with debut runners on this circuit. Catalano often has them fit enough to win at first asking without being fully cranked, and this spot is soft enough for a win.
Songfest (12) draws a tough outside post but comes from the John Ennis barn, which excels with 2-year-olds at Turfway. If she can clear the field early or find a tuck before the turn, she has the pedigree to contend.
Secondary Choices
Great Kerry Lee (2) draws inside for Victoria Oliver. Oliver's horses usually improve with distance and experience, but from the rail, Luan Machado will likely try to save ground and make one run. She is a logical board hitter.
Longshots
Princess Woejee (11) debuts for Kelsey Danner. This barn can pop with a price horse, and the work tab should be inspected for any sharp gate breezes.
Pace Analysis
Expect a scramble from the gate with Songfest (12) and Bresha (5) likely sending to avoid traffic. The pace should be honest but not scorching.
Selections
Win: Bresha
Place: Songfest
Show: Great Kerry Lee
Race 2
Post Time: 6:25 PM
6 Furlongs Synthetic | Claiming $8,000
This race centers entirely around One Timer. A former Graded Stakes winner dropping to the bottom-level $8,000 claiming rank is the definition of a “red flag” drop. However, his back class is superior to this field by twenty lengths. If he has three functioning legs, he wins. If he is completely gone, the race is wide open.

Key Contenders
One Timer (10) is the elephant in the room. Larry Rivelli drops him off a cliff. He has natural speed that this field cannot match. You are betting on his soundness, not his ability.
Hometown Hero (1) is a hard-knocking veteran who loves this track. If the favorite falters, he is the one likely to pick up the pieces from the rail.
Secondary Choices
Happy Cat (4) is a consistent check-earner at this level. He lacks a winning punch but is a must-use in vertical exotics like the trifecta.
Longshots
Zoombie (2) has been running against similar company and can close for a share if the pace collapses, which is possible if One Timer goes too fast early.
Pace Analysis
One Timer will go to the lead. There is no other option. The question is whether he stops at the 1/8th pole.
Selections
Win: One Timer
Place: Hometown Hero
Show: Happy Cat
Race 3
Post Time: 6:55 PM
1 Mile Synthetic | Claiming $25,000
A competitive mile event featuring another notable dropper. Slip Mahoney was on the Kentucky Derby trail two years ago and now finds himself for a $25k tag.

Key Contenders
Slip Mahoney (7) takes a major drop for Genaro Garcia. His one-run closing style fits this track profile well. At this level, his late kick should be overpowering compared to career claimers.
King Curlin (5) is a horse for the course. Brittany Vanden Berg places her horses ambitiously but they run well. He has tactical speed that Slip Mahoney lacks, which gives him the jump on the favorite.
Secondary Choices
Final Denile (10) draws the outside but has run competitive races at higher levels. The post is a major disadvantage at the one-mile distance at Turfway, demanding a perfect ride from Carrasco.
Pace Analysis
King of Kentucky (4) and King Curlin (5) should ensure a fair pace. Slip Mahoney will be lagging far back and hoping for traffic to clear.
Selections
Win: Slip Mahoney
Place: King Curlin
Show: Final Denile
Race 4
Post Time: 7:25 PM
1 Mile Synthetic | Claiming $30,000
Another race, another dropper. Time for Truth was a stakes winner at Oaklawn earlier in his career and now runs for a tag.
Key Contenders
Time for Truth (10) is the class of the field. Mark Casse's aggressive drop suggests they want a win or to move the horse along. His speed figures from his 3-year-old campaign bury this field.
Yellow Brick (1) is not the same horse he was, but Matt Shirer is a high-percentage trainer off the claim/drop. From the rail, he can save all the ground and make a run.
Secondary Choices
Calycanthus (7) runs for Rusty Arnold. He is inconsistent but fits well with these N3L conditions. If the top two contest a hot pace, he is the upsetter.
Selections
Win: Time for Truth
Place: Calycanthus
Show: Yellow Brick
Race 5
Post Time: 7:55 PM
6 1/2 Furlongs Synthetic | Maiden Special Weight
A $100,000 maiden race that has attracted big barns.
Key Contenders
Envision (1) runs for William Walden, who has a stellar strike rate with his synthetic string. The rail draw at 6.5 furlongs is manageable, and his work tab suggests readiness.
Mendels Mate (7) is trained by Joe Sharp, who is aggressive with 2-year-olds. Look for him to be forwardly placed.
Secondary Choices
Biz Whiz (2) represents the Rusty Arnold barn. Arnold often gives them a race, so watch the tote board. If he takes money, he is live.
Selections
Win: Envision
Place: Mendels Mate
Show: Biz Whiz
Race 6
Post Time: 8:25 PM
1 1/16 Miles Synthetic | Allowance Optional Claiming
The feature race of the night. This is a balanced field where trip will dictate the winner.
Key Contenders
Tapit Shoes (4) has been facing tougher company on the dirt and turf. His transition to synthetic should be smooth given his pedigree (Tapit). He has tactical speed and finds a soft spot here.
Big Blue Line (1) is a dangerous runner for John Ortiz. He can be inconsistent, but his “A” game is good enough to beat this group. The rail draw allows him to dictate his position.
Secondary Choices
Smokey Mandate (7) is the Mike Maker entry. Maker at Turfway in a route race is an automatic look. The outside post is tricky, but he has the speed to clear.
Pace Analysis
Smokey Mandate will likely send from the outside to clear. Tapit Shoes will sit the garden trip in second or third.
Selections
Win: Tapit Shoes
Place: Smokey Mandate
Show: Big Blue Line
Race 7
Post Time: 8:55 PM
6 Furlongs Synthetic | Claiming $30,000
A lower-level sprint for fillies and mares.
Key Contenders
Army Girl (5) drops in class and has shown affinity for the surface in the past. Tracey Wisner's barn is capable of popping at a price, and this mare fits on numbers.
Gold Del Mar (2) has tactical speed and draws well. In a race void of deep closers, her ability to sit close to the pace is a major asset.
Longshots
Mindy's Union (6) is a potential wake-up candidate for Genaro Garcia.
Selections
Win: Gold Del Mar
Place: Army Girl
Show: Mindy's Union
Race 8
Post Time: 9:25 PM
1 Mile Synthetic | Allowance
A solid allowance race for fillies and mares.
Key Contenders
Modern Sound (3) looks like the standout. Mike Maker has her spotted perfectly. She has run well against better competition and possesses the turn-of-foot necessary to win on Tapeta.
Low Key in Love (4) comes from the Brendan Walsh barn. Walsh is elite at Turfway. She should be closing fast late.
Secondary Choices
Whippoorwill (8) has shown flashes of talent for Kelsey Danner. If the pace heats up, she will be the one flying at the end.
Selections
Win: Modern Sound
Place: Low Key in Love
Show: Whippoorwill
Race 9
Post Time: 9:55 PM
1 Mile Synthetic | Claiming $16,000
A chaotic claiming event to close out the Pick 5.
Key Contenders
Peacock Road (5) has been consistent at this level. Eric Foster does a great job maintaining form in these mid-level claimers.
Spoils of War (7) takes a drop for Horacio De Paz. The De Paz barn is dangerous when they ship in.
Selections
Win: Peacock Road
Place: Spoils of War
Show: Honey Hauler
Race 10
Post Time: 10:25 PM
1 Mile Synthetic | Maiden Claiming $50,000
The nightcap is a maiden claimer where many will be trying two turns for the first time.
Key Contenders
Profound (7) runs for Cherie DeVaux. This is the classiest barn in the race. Dropping into a maiden claimer usually signals intent from this outfit.
Mo Town Jazz (2) has shown speed in previous starts. Jeff Hiles should have him ready to stretch out.
Longshots
Nash Potatoes (1) draws the rail. If he can save ground, he might plod into the superfecta at a giant price.
Selections
Win: Profound
Place: Mo Town Jazz
Show: Tap Em' Out
