Jeff Ruby Steaks Day at Turfway Park on Saturday, March 21, 2026 offers a 13-race card headlined by six-figure purses and a Grade 3 Kentucky Derby qualifier over the Tapeta surface. The feature, the Jeff Ruby Steaks (Race 12), is a 1 1/8‑mile Grade 3 for three-year-olds worth 777,000 and awards 100 Road to the Kentucky Derby points to the winner, effectively guaranteeing a Derby berth.

Undercard features include the TwinSpires Kentucky Cup Classic (Race 10) for older horses, the Bourbonette Oaks (Race 11) for three-year-old fillies, the Latonia Stakes (Race 7) for older fillies and mares, plus the Rushaway (Race 8) and Animal Kingdom (Race 9) for three-year-olds at different distances. Large fields, deep stakes races, and Tapeta-specific form create a card where surface preference and trip will be as important as raw speed figures.

Weather and Track Conditions

Forecasts for Florence, Kentucky today call for cool late-winter/early-spring conditions, with highs around the upper 40s to near 49°F and lows in the low 30s. Some forecasts mention about a 30 percent chance of light showers or a damp feel in the air, but nothing suggesting heavy rain or storms.

The Tapeta Footings surface at Turfway Park is designed to drain extremely well and to maintain a fast, consistent rating regardless of light rain, eliminating the slop and variable moisture issues that dirt surfaces can create. As a result, handicappers can generally assume a fast, uniform Tapeta track with minimal moisture-related bias, and can focus on pace, post, and surface affinity rather than worrying about off-track adjustments.

Track Bias and Post Position Bias

Turfway's Tapeta has historically been one of the fairer synthetic tracks, but there are subtle tendencies by distance. Recent meet statistics show:

At six furlongs, early speed is a significant asset, with a strong share of winners able to go wire-to-wire or sit very close early. Outside posts are not a disadvantage in sprints; in fact, stalls seven and nine produced a notably high percentage of winners in one recent meet, while the rail and inside two gates were somewhat less productive.

At one mile and 1 1/16 miles, the track plays more balanced, with only about 20 percent of winners wiring fields at a mile and even fewer at 1 1/16 miles. Wider draws can be surprisingly effective in routes: one meet showed a significant chunk of route winners drawn in double-digit posts, with post 11 yielding around 30 percent winners in a small sample, while post 3 underperformed. That suggests today's outer-drawn horses in full fields need not be downgraded automatically, especially with riders who can tuck in behind the first flight.

Overall, expect:

Sprints: Small tilt to outside pace and pace-pressers.

Routes: Fair but slightly friendly to outside stalking trips, with deep closers needing some pace help but not impossible, especially in big fields where the tempo can quicken late.

Race 1 – Maiden Special Weight – 1 Mile Tapeta – 3yo Fillies

Post Time

12:45 PM ET

Pace Analysis

This mile maiden for three-year-old fillies looks moderately run, with several wanting tactical positions but no obvious need-the-lead burner.

Never Said No (1) projects to use the rail and Saez's aggression to secure a ground-saving stalking spot just behind the leaders. Mo's Little Darlin (2) has Florida sprint experience and could show more early speed stretching out, while Nicksie (5) and Miss Milky Way (6) for the Drury barn also have enough tactical speed to be in the first flight. Divine Passion (7) would have been a pace factor but should be treated cautiously given the prior vet-scratch note.

Temple Goddess (12) and Modern Escape (11) are drawn wide and likely to be ridden for a mid-pack, three-wide stalking trip if they break cleanly. With no true speed demon drawn outside, the pace should be honest but not punishing, making it ideal for tactical stalkers and rail-sitters who save ground around both turns.

Key Contenders

Never Said No (1) draws the rail with Gabriel Saez for a barn that spots maiden fillies aggressively when they think they belong. She should benefit from the inside trip and a likely forward ground-saving position, which is particularly valuable given Turfway's fair but sometimes outside-friendly layout at a mile. If she has any prior route or Tapeta work in her pattern, the configuration and pilot are positives for an improved effort.

Mo's Little Darlin (2) has multiple also-eligible appearances in tougher Gulfstream Park maiden special weights on her scratch log, which signals that she has been kept in higher-end spots and suggests some behind-the-scenes respect for her ability. The Vaccarezza barn and Joel Rosario fit a patient, sit-and-pounce style, and a transfer from Gulfstream dirt or turf to Tapeta can be a plus given synthetic's affinity for turf pedigrees. With her prior AE status, she may be live now that she finally draws in against a local group.

Nicksie (5) combines the presence of John Velazquez with the Drury barn, which has been very effective in this Turfway meet with well-meant maiden stock. She owns enough tactical speed to avoid traffic and should appreciate the mile configuration, especially if her pedigree leans to stamina and synthetic or turf. With the rider upgrade and local connections, she looks like one of the main win candidates.

Secondary Choices

Miss Milky Way (6) is the second Drury entry and appears the type to benefit from a route. With Luan Machado up, she should secure a comfortable stalking trip just behind the top flight. The combination of barn familiarity with the surface and a rider with strong Turfway instincts makes her a logical underneath player.

Princess Julie (9) has a solid local pilot in Rafael Hernandez and comes from an outfit that can move a filly second or third time out. From mid-gate she can avoid the worst of the traffic and may grind late into the exotics at a price if the leaders overdo it.

Temple Goddess (12) is marooned outside but has Danny Sheehy in the irons and a trainer, Jimmy Corrigan, who can strike with a horse third or fourth start of the form cycle. The draw means she will likely be three-wide or forced to drop back and angle, but in these Tapeta routes outside, stalking trips can be okay, especially if the inside gets congested.

Longshots

Rather Late (3) for John Hancock and Dylan Machado draws inside and could step forward stretching out if she has any hint of late kick in her profile. Adorable Moments (4) with Joseph Ramos may show improved early foot and is not impossible to hang on for a minor award.

West Of Lex (8) for John Servis and Walter Rodriguez may appreciate the Tapeta more than prior surfaces, particularly if she has turf leanings. Modern Escape (11) is listed on the scratch log as an AE in a prior Turfway maiden, indicating some behind-the-scenes interest; the wide draw is a negative, but she merits mention underneath.

Race 2 – Allowance Optional Claiming – 6 Furlongs Tapeta – 3yo and up

Post Time

1:13 PM ET

Pace Analysis

This six-furlong allowance/optional claimer has several pace elements and should be run at a strong clip.

Global Sensation (1) from the rail with Irad Ortiz Jr. and Michael Maker is likely to show intent and either send or sit just off the early fractions. Utopian (2) and Hogie The Player (4) have enough early pace to force the issue, and Wakan (5) could be hustled from mid-pack. Master Controller (6) and Chiseler (7) can stalk, while Curlin's Gesture (8) and Barksdale (9) for Jacobson both have tactical speed and may occupy pressing spots.

With Barksdale (9) drawn outside his stablemate Curlin's Gesture (8), expect a three-horse pace contest between the rail, mid-outer speed, and Jacobson pair, setting up a solid pace scenario that may allow one mid-pack stalker to pounce.

Key Contenders

Global Sensation (1) has the rail, Maker, and Irad Ortiz Jr., which is an aggressive combination in a six-furlong Tapeta sprint. He should either secure the rail lead or sit pocketed behind the first pair, and this configuration over a fair but speed-friendly track is ideal for his style. Maker's horses are typically well-spotted in these mid-level allowances, and this gelding looks like the main win threat.

Curlin's Gesture (8) exits a scratch at Oaklawn in a tougher allowance, indicating the connections changed course to target this more suitable synthetic spot. He has been effective sprinting and now gets a capable synthetic pilot in Gerardo Corrales along with a trainer known for getting horses fit off the ship. If he handles Tapeta, he can sit just off the leaders and strike turning for home.

Chiseler (7) has a solid record in similar company for Joe Sharp and Rafael Hernandez. His off-the-pace style might be ideal in a race with multiple speeds, and he should get a good stalking position from this gate, avoiding the worst of any rail pressure while not being hung too wide.

Secondary Choices

Master Controller (6) for Brittany Vanden Berg and Chris Emigh has the profile of a consistent allowance performer who may be just a half-step below the top pair but fits strongly in the exotics. From mid-gate he can sit a pressing or stalking trip and has enough finish to get into the trifecta.

Barksdale (9) for David Jacobson and Walter Rodriguez will likely apply outside pressure to the early leaders, and if the Jacobson pair work together, he might get first run as a stalking outside trip. He is usable in exactas and trifectas.

Falfurrias (10) scratched as an AE from a prior Turfway allowance and now surfaces in a similar spot with Joel Rosario, which suggests intention. The outer gate allows Rosario to read the early shape and either drop in behind the main speed or track three-wide; his class and connections make him a credible upset candidate.

Longshots

Utopian (2) and Hogie The Player (4) both appear on the scratch log from prior races, indicating they have been waiting for the right spot. Hogie the Player (4) has tactical speed that can keep him in the frame to mid-stretch, while Utopian (2) could slip onto the bottom of exotics if he avoids a speed duel.

Buy The Rights (3), Wakan (5), and Tagliatelle (11) round out the field; Tagliatelle (11) is notable for being scratched from a prior claiming spot by the trainer, suggesting caution or regrouping; he may need this race, but the outside speed draw makes him a fringe pace factor.

Race 3 – Maiden Special Weight – 1 Mile Tapeta – 3yo

Post Time

1:43 PM ET

Pace Analysis

This is a large field of maidens at a mile with several unknown quantities, but the overall shape looks like a controlled, honest pace with one or two possible pace pushers.

Triple Max (3) and Fancy Gentleman (4) can show some early foot from inside-mid gates. Bold Stand (6) appears on the scratch watch as a prior trainer scratch, which often indicates the barn wanted more time; he could be forward if they send. Apollo's Glory (7) and Helpful Howie (8) figure to sit tactically in the second flight.

Dinglewood (9), Hey Dey (10), Mister Landry (11), and Silver Sniper (12) likely sit mid-pack or deeper. Blessed Warrior (1) from the rail is on the scratch log as a prior AE in a Turfway maiden, signaling connections' interest; from the rail, expect more initiative to avoid getting shuffled back. The pace should favor horses sitting third through sixth, with a long stretch allowing mid-pack runners to grind into contention.

Key Contenders

Blessed Warrior (1) was previously on the AE list for a similar Turfway maiden special weight, suggesting the connections have been trying to get him into this kind of spot. Drawing the rail with Luis Contreras, he should save ground and sit no worse than mid-pack. On Tapeta, that trip is optimal, and if his prior works or races show any late foot, he can finish strongly.

Thespian (2) for Eoin Harty and Joel Rosario is a likely well-meant runner given the connections and Tapeta-friendly profile of turf-leaning pedigrees. Rosario's presence usually signals some confidence, and from post 2 he can drop over behind the pace and produce a strong late run.

Dinglewood (9) for Graham Motion and Luan Machado has the right connections for this surface and distance. Motion has historically done well moving turf horses to synthetic, and Machado's familiarity with Turfway's flow is a plus. He can sit mid-pack three-wide and launch into the long stretch, a pattern that works well in one-mile Tapeta races.

Secondary Choices

Bold Stand (6), scratched previously by the trainer from a similar maiden, returns in this spot, which could signal readiness after whatever minor issue caused the earlier scratch. With Edgar Morales up, he should be forward enough to avoid traffic and can hold on for a piece.

Helpful Howie (8) was previously on the AE list for a Turfway maiden and now gets Julien Leparoux, a rider comfortable saving ground and timing a late run in big synthetic fields. He's a logical exotics inclusion.

Silver Sniper (12) from the outside gate for Eric Foster and Fernando De La Cruz must overcome a wide draw but may have the tactical speed to drop over into a stalking lane by the first turn. If he is not overbet, his draw and connections make him a fair price player for the trifecta.

Longshots

Triple Max (3) and Fancy Gentleman (4) could take shots on the front end and at least influence the pace. Celtic Flame (5) with Walter Rodriguez and Jorge Duarte Jr may prefer turf, but that can translate to synthetic. Apollo's Glory (7), Hey Dey (10), and Mister Landry (11) round out the field; Mister Landry (11) adds interest with Rafael Hernandez and the “o” equipment note, possibly indicating blinkers or other changes that can spark improvement.

Race 4 – Allowance Optional Claiming – 1 Mile Tapeta – Fillies and Mares

Post Time

2:13 PM ET

Pace Analysis

Fourteen older fillies and mares line up for a mile, making trip and positioning critical. The pace picture is somewhat murky but leans toward a contested, honest tempo.

Empress Ellie (1) can use the rail to be up close without having to sprint, while Saphira (2) and Oak Alley (3) have enough tactical speed to place themselves in the first flight. Hidden Presence (4), Calamity (6), and Humbled (7) are generally stalkers.

Yes Indeed (5) was scratched from a prior Turfway allowance due to a private vet illness note, which may mean she is coming in fresh but possibly needing a race; when right, she has tactical speed and may vie for a forward position. Love Her Lots (8), Classic Appeal (9), Lainey (10), Kiss Me Again (11), Egyptian Candy (12), Bijou Baby (13), and J N J Heartandsoul (14) will sort themselves into mid-pack to deep closing roles. Given the big field and multiple mid-speed types, expect an even-to-fast tempo that favors horses with stamina and the ability to avoid traffic.

Key Contenders

Saphira (2) for Riley Mott and Joel Rosario has the look of a graded-connected filly placed appropriately in a Tapeta allowance. Coming from a turf or dirt background with a turf-leaning pedigree, she should handle synthetic and from post 2 can sit a perfect inside stalking trip and move at the three-eighths pole.

Love Her Lots (8) for Michael Maker and John Velazquez brings considerable class and consistency, and Maker often targets this type of route allowance with mares who like the surface. From post 8 she gets a clean run into the first turn and can sit just behind the leaders, poised to strike in the lane.

Calamity (6) for Brendan Walsh and Walter Rodriguez is a solid mid-division stalker who will appreciate an honest pace. Walsh's barn has a good record moving between surfaces, and Calamity (6) could be sitting on a peak effort second time over the track or in her current form cycle.

Secondary Choices

Empress Ellie (1) for Bill Morey and Julien Leparoux benefits from the rail and can save ground all the way, which is valuable in a 14-horse field. If she can maintain position and find room turning for home, she can hit the board.

Classic Appeal (9) for Dale Romans and Rafael Hernandez has the profile of a filly who can grind from mid-pack and get into the exotics at this level. The post is fine and the pace scenario should not leave her too far back.

Egyptian Candy (12) for Daniel Leitch and Luan Machado has the outside draw but an excellent local rider who can mitigate that by dropping over in the first turn. She can be a late-running threat if the tempo collapses.

Yes Indeed (5) is a class horse with Irad Ortiz Jr. but returns from a private vet illness scratch; if she is fully recovered and fit, she has the class to win, but that note requires some caution in structuring tickets.

Longshots

Humbled (7) with Vincent Cheminaud is an improving four-year-old who can outrun her odds if she steps forward again on Tapeta. Hidden Presence (4) for Paulo Lobo and Alberto Burgos may benefit from returning to a surface she likes, and Bijou Baby (13), returning from a private vet illness, may be a rebound candidate if healthy.

Lainey (10), Kiss Me Again (11), and J N J Heartandsoul (14) all face wide draws and big fields, but with their respective riders they could work out trips into the second or third-tier positions late.

Race 5 – Maiden Special Weight – 6 Furlongs Tapeta – 3yo

Post Time

2:43 PM ET

Pace Analysis

This six-furlong maiden for colts and geldings is loaded with potential speed and first-out talent.

Coach Bargatze (1) with Joel Rosario from the rail will need to be asked early or risk being shuffled back, while Volendam (2) for Maker and Irad Ortiz Jr. has the profile of a live debut or lightly-raced runner with enough speed to sit just off the leaders. Equity (3), Boss' Deed (4), Mush Carey (5), and The Hund (6) can all show early energy.

Terre Haute (7) and Burns (8) for John Ennis, and Sun Chaser (9) for Michael McCarthy, Jet Off (10) for George Weaver, Accord (11) for Tom Drury, and Mr. Vaggio (12) for John Hancock create a crowded middle. With so many unknowns and sharp barns, expect a hot pace, especially down the backstretch, which should favor a horse who can sit just behind the first wave and finish strongly.

Key Contenders

Volendam (2) for Michael Maker and Irad Ortiz Jr. is an obvious key: Maker is deadly with three-year-old maidens on Tapeta, and Irad's presence suggests confidence. From post 2 he can avoid getting pinned inside while still saving ground. If Volendam (2) has even moderate early speed, he should get a perfect pressing trip.

Jet Off (10) for George Weaver and Gerardo Corrales is another live one, coming from a barn that ships some sharp sprint maidens to synthetic spots. Corrales is excellent on Tapeta and can sit a stalking trip outside the main speed. This outside pressing trip is often ideal at six furlongs at Turfway.

Sun Chaser (9) for Michael McCarthy and Kazushi Kimura is a logical contender if he brings dirt or turf form that converts well to synthetic. McCarthy is well-regarded with synthetic/turf types, and Kimura has had success in stakes and allowances on Tapeta in similar circuits. He should get a good trip just off the speed.

Secondary Choices

Coach Bargatze (1) for Doug O'Neill and Joel Rosario has the rail and the option to send or sit inside mid-pack. With O'Neill's ability to have them cranked for a debut or early start, he could run well at a price.

Equity (3) for Mark Casse and Luan Machado is another sophisticated connection combination; Casse's horses often move up on synthetic, and Machado's local knowledge is a plus.

Accord (11) for Tom Drury and Irving Moncada is drawn wide but could benefit from stalking outside and avoiding the early scramble inside. Drury is very capable at this meet and may have this colt spotted for his best.

Longshots

Boss' Deed (4) has a scratch log listing prior AE status for a Turfway maiden, and while he may not be the top barn's main bullet, he deserves respect underneath. The Hund (6), Terre Haute (7), and Burns (8) for John Ennis can all flash early speed and potentially hold on for minor shares.

Mush Carey (5) and Mr. Vaggio (12) round out the field and are fringe longshots; any improvement on Tapeta could see them sneak into supers at big prices.

Race 6 – Allowance Optional Claiming – 1 Mile Tapeta – 3yo and up

Post Time

3:13 PM ET

Pace Analysis

A full gate of 14 older runners at a mile creates pace complexity. Two Beers By Ten (2) for Maker and Irad Ortiz Jr. has tactical speed and may be forward. King Size (1) with Luan Machado from the rail can also be handy, while Aguila Negra (3) and Goes The Clown (4) may press.

Coalmoon (6) for Paulo Lobo and Joel Rosario has enough speed to track in the first flight, and Happy Happy Day (10) can press or stalk. Protective (11) and Gamblin George (12) are more mid-pack. Real Fast (13) and Saint In The City (14) from outside may either send to clear or drop back to avoid a wide first turn.

The likely outcome is a contested but not suicidal pace, with the best trip belonging to a horse in the second flight who avoids being three-wide on the first turn.

Key Contenders

Coalmoon (6) for Paulo Lobo and Joel Rosario stands out as a key player: the barn has been effective on Tapeta, and Rosario can deliver an ideal stalking trip from mid-gate. Coalmoon (6) should sit just behind the leaders, saving enough for a strong late run.

Two Beers By Ten (2) for Michael Maker and Irad Ortiz Jr. has the connections and tactical versatility to either set or sit just off the pace. Maker excels in this condition level, and Irad's aggression and timing are assets.

King Size (1) for Michael Stidham and Luan Machado benefits from the rail and should be able to secure a ground-saving trip either on the lead or in the pocket. If the pace does not get too hot, the inside position can be decisive.

Secondary Choices

Read On (8) for William Morey and Julio Felix is a mid-pack grinder who may appreciate a contested pace and can roll late into the frame. Protective (11) for Mary Anne Howard benefits from a light weight with Brooke Bays; if the pace collapses, the weight break could help.

Happy Happy Day (10) for Paulo Lobo and Evin Roman has a scratch note from a cancelled race earlier in the meet, indicating he has been pointed for this type of spot and should be fit. He can press or stalk and belongs in exactas.

Longshots

Aguila Negra (3), Goes The Clown (4), Overstatement (5) (who returns from a regulatory vet injured scratch and must prove soundness and sharpness), Lac Macaza (7), Gamblin George (12), Real Fast (13), and Saint In The City (14) all have pieces of form that could see them grab minor checks. Race 7 – Latonia Stakes – 1 1/16 Miles Tapeta – Fillies and Mares

Post Time

3:43 PM ET

Pace Analysis

The Latonia for older fillies and mares at 1 1/16 miles features a compact field of seven but nuanced pace.

Literate (1) for Brad Cox and Luan Machado is versatile and can attend the pace from the rail. Stylish Sue (2) for Joe Sharp and Irad Ortiz Jr. can press or stalk, while Golden Sunshine (3) has the tactical speed to be in the first three. Hello Hello Hello (4) and Warming (5) might not be committed speeds, while Devassa (6) and Five A Side (7) prefer mid-pack stalking or later runs.

With only seven runners, expect a moderate tempo with little chance of a meltdown. Trips will be paramount, and horses with tactical versatility will have the edge.

Key Contenders

Literate (1) for Brad Cox and Machado is the deserving top choice, with a top barn and local ace rider combination. From the rail she can either hold the lead or sit a perfect pocket trip, and Cox's synthetic horses are typically well-prepared.

Warming (5) for Graham Motion and John Velazquez brings a high-class turf profile that often translates well to Tapeta. Motion's record with turf-to-synthetic mares is strong, and Velazquez can give her a patient two-wide stalking trip before launching in the lane.

Stylish Sue (2) for Joe Sharp and Irad Ortiz Jr. is a consistent mare who will enjoy a clean outside-rail stalking spot. Irad's ability to judge pace in small fields makes her extremely dangerous.

Secondary Choices

Golden Sunshine (3) for Eoin Harty and Joel Rosario projects to be in the first three early and can get first run on the deeper closers. Devassa (6) for Paulo Lobo and Walter Rodriguez is another mare who prefers a mid-pack trip and could capitalize if the leaders go too fast.

Five A Side (7) for John Servis and Gerardo Corrales appears on the scratch watch as a prior also-eligible, indicating she has been held for the right stakes spot. Though widest of all, Corrales' comfort on Tapeta is a plus.

Race 8 – Rushaway Stakes – 1 1/16 Miles Tapeta – 3yo

Post Time

4:13 PM ET

Pace Analysis

J J Grey (1) can show some speed from the rail, Trendsetter (2) can chase, and Steel Imperium (4) has enough tactical pace to be in the first three. Valiant (5) for Brad Cox and Irad Ortiz Jr. is a key pace player, likely to contest or sit just off the lead. Rhythm Lady (6), a filly taking on males, has shown speed when able to clear off and was highlighted by handicappers as potentially controlling the tempo if she breaks sharply.

Tartabull (7) and Bull By The Horns (8) will likely track from outside. With multiple pace types but only one true need-the-lead candidate, expect an honest but manageable pace, not a meltdown.

Key Contenders

Rhythm Lady (6), the lone filly in the field, is a major player. She wired a Tapeta sprint in her second start, earning a speed figure comparable to the top males here, and now stretches out to 1 1/16 miles. Handicappers have noted that Valiant (5) has not been able to make the lead in previous Tapeta tries, suggesting Rhythm Lady (6) may control the pace at a price if she breaks well.

Valiant (5) for Brad Cox and Irad Ortiz Jr. brings class and strong connections. Even if he cannot clear, he can sit a stalking outside trip and press the pace, which may prove ideal if Rhythm Lady (6) feels distance pressure late.

Bull By The Horns (8) for Saffie Joseph Jr. and John Velazquez drops from the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth into this ungraded stakes, a significant class relief. He has shown stalking ability and should get a perfect trip from the outside if he handles Tapeta; his second dam's all-weather success suggests he might.

Secondary Choices

Trendsetter (2) and Steel Imperium (4) are capable of staying close to the pace and can hang on for pieces. East Village (3) for Ken McPeek and Luan Machado may prefer a later run at this distance and can offer value in exotics.

J J Grey (1) for McPeek and Rosario may face pressure from inside, but if he can secure the pocket, he could run a sneaky good race at a price.

Race 9 – Animal Kingdom Stakes – 6 Furlongs Tapeta – 3yo

Post Time

4:43 PM ET

Pace Analysis

This three-year-old sprint stakes is loaded with speed. Small Town (1) has early gas, Ganaas (2) can show speed, Longshoreman (3) for Wesley Ward and Joel Rosario is likely to be sent, and Archimedes (4) for Maker and Irad Ortiz Jr. has tactical pace.

Gnome (5) and Mom's Spaghetti (6) can stalk, while Outfielder (7) for Wesley Ward and John Velazquez has dangerous speed from outside. Hometown Bound (8) for Jorge Duarte Jr. and Victor Carrasco will stalk from just outside the speedball group.

With at least three potential early leaders, the pace is likely to be hot, favoring stalkers and mid-pack runners.

Key Contenders

Outfielder (7) for Wesley Ward and John Velazquez is a major player, combining Ward's sprint expertise with a Hall of Fame rider who can break sharp and either clear or sit outside the speed. From post 7, Outfielder (7) can avoid inside scrimmaging and take control or stalk in the clear.

Archimedes (4) for Michael Maker and Irad Ortiz Jr. will likely sit just off the Ward speedsters and get first run turning for home. Maker's synthetic sprinters have done well here, and Irad's ability to navigate traffic and time the move makes Archimedes (4) a top win candidate.

Longshoreman (3) for Wesley Ward and Joel Rosario has the look of the inside pace horse and can either go on with it or force others to commit early; if the track is playing kindly to speed by this race, Longshoreman (3) could prove hard to reel in.

Secondary Choices

Hometown Bound (8) with Victor Carrasco and Jorge Duarte Jr. can sit mid-pack outside and make one run, which might work well in this pace scenario. Small Town (1) for Michael McCarthy and Kazushi Kimura has a prior stakes scratch note, indicating he was once considered for a big spot, and he might run well if the rail is not a disadvantage.

Gnome (5) and Mom's Spaghetti (6) can both pick up pieces late if the pace collapses.

Longshots

Ganaas (2) is a fringe pace factor who could hang around longer than expected. Long-priced closers might get a slice if the leaders duel each other into defeat.

Race 10 – TwinSpires Kentucky Cup Classic – 1 1/8 Miles Tapeta – 4yo and up

Post Time

5:13 PM ET

Pace Analysis

Honor Marie (1) may sit mid-pack; Utah Beach (2) for Brendan Walsh and Vincent Cheminaud has some tactical speed and can press. Naptown (3) and Tickled Quist (4) are more versatile but can be placed near the front. Willy D's (5) for Maker and Velazquez likely stalks, while Tapit Shoes (6) for Ed Moger Jr. and Luis Contreras can be handy.

Endlessly (7) for Michael McCarthy and Kazushi Kimura is more of a closer, as is Mercante (9) for Brian Knippenberg and Walter Rodriguez. Wadsworth (8) for Brad Cox and Irad Ortiz Jr. can track just behind the leaders. With multiple forward-capable horses and at least two strong closers, expect an honest, potentially contested tempo that sets up for a sustained late run.

Key Contenders

Endlessly (7) is the key horse here, returning to all-weather for the first time since winning the El Camino Real at Golden Gate and the Jeff Ruby Steaks at Turfway in 2024. Since then he has been running on turf, often picking up minor shares, but his perfect synthetic profile suggests a significant upgrade back on Tapeta. Handicappers have highlighted him as a potential overlay at generous odds given his proven affinity for all-weather and the likely honest pace.

Mercante (9) is the defending Kentucky Cup Classic winner, having stalked and pounced in last year's edition before running well again in Grade 1 company on Kentucky Derby day. He returns fresh after a late-season tailoff but has been working steadily for a sharp local trainer, and his stalking style fits the projected pace.

Wadsworth (8) for Brad Cox and Irad Ortiz Jr. is a strong class and connection horse who can sit in the second flight and attack turning for home. The combination of Cox and Irad in a Tapeta route stakes is formidable.

Secondary Choices

Willy D's (5) for Maker and Velazquez is consistent and will likely sit behind the first tier, giving him a chance to get first run on the deeper closers. Utah Beach (2) for Brendan Walsh has the tactical speed to factor and may travel well on Tapeta.

Tapit Shoes (6), Naptown (3), and Honor Marie (1) each have class lines that could see them get into the frame if they adapt to Tapeta or if the pace scenario breaks their way.

Longshots

Mercante (9) may in fact be shorter in the market, but if he floats above his morning line of about 7‑2 to 4‑1 or more, he becomes a value play as a horse-for-course type. Honor Marie (1) might be a deep exotics candidate if the race devolves into a late-running contest.

Race 11 – Bourbonette Oaks – 1 1/16 Miles Tapeta – 3yo Fillies

Post Time

5:43 PM ET

Pace Analysis

Resplendence (1) is the key early speed; she has wired two straight races at Turfway and again draws the rail. Resist (2) can be forward, Beara Peninsula (3) may sit close, while Blazing Brat (4), Scratch It (5), and Callmeyourmajesty (6) appear more tactical.

Maximum Offer (7) has a stalking style, and Bless Her (8) can sit mid-pack. Lovely Grey (9) and La Ville Lumiere (10) are likely mid-pack or closers, while Lorelei Lee (11) and Wonzee Weather (12) will likely save ground and try to roll late. With only one clear speed horse and several stalkers, the pace could be moderate, giving a big edge to Resplendence (1) if she breaks cleanly.

Key Contenders

Resplendence (1) for Paulo Lobo and Alberto Burgos is the projected lone speed, and handicappers have emphasized her front-running profile in a race lacking early gas. She has wired two straight over this track, both times from the rail in big fields, so today's draw and configuration are familiar. Burgos, though not a household stakes name, is a Turfway regular and knows her well, having ridden both wins.

Maximum Offer (7) for Ken McPeek and Emmanuel Esquivel is highlighted by handicappers as the main alternative, trying Tapeta for the first time but already proven in a Kentucky Oaks prep when finishing a close second in the Martha Washington at Oaklawn. Her stalking style, especially in a race where she can sit second or third behind Resplendence (1), is ideal.

Scratch It (5) for Brad Cox and Irad Ortiz Jr. is a high-class filly with strong connections and enough tactical speed to sit close. She is a must-include given the barn and rider and should enjoy Tapeta if her pedigree leans to turf or stamina.

Secondary Choices

Lovely Grey (9) for Kelsey Danner and Joel Rosario appears on the scratch log from a prior Turfway allowance, indicating she has been held for the right spot and now gets a top rider. Her mid-pack style and proven Tapeta ability make her a logical exotics player.

Bless Her (8) for Graham Motion and John Velazquez brings a strong turf profile and an excellent synthetic trainer-rider combination. La Ville Lumiere (10) for Michael McCarthy and Kazushi Kimura is another interesting filly who should handle Tapeta and may launch a sustained run in the final three furlongs.

Lorelei Lee (11) and Wonzee Weather (12) are outside drawn but can be dangerous late if the pace is hotter than expected.

Longshots

Resist (2), Beara Peninsula (3), Blazing Brat (4), and Callmeyourmajesty (6) all have stakes entries and prior scratch notes that hint at connections who believe they belong at this level. Any of them could jump up with a better-than-expected effort and fill out superfectas at a price.

Wagering angle: Lean on Resplendence (1) as a strong single in some pick 4/pick 5 tickets due to the perceived lone-speed advantage; in others, include Maximum Offer (7) and Scratch It (5) as A or B horses; vertical tickets can key Resplendence (1) on top and spread underneath.

Race 12 – Jeff Ruby Steaks – 1 1/8 Miles Tapeta – 3yo

Post Time

6:25 PM ET

Pace Analysis

Turf Star (1) is likely to be handy from the rail, Fulleffort (2) has tactical speed, and Baytown Dreamer (3) can sit close if asked. Two Out Hero (4) has prominent early speed from Woodbine form, and Black Hornet (5) has a high cruising speed that can keep him in the first group.

Medici (6) is versatile and can stalk, Maximus Prime (7) could be mid-pack, while Chaos Agent (8) may track from just off the pace. Brave Force (9) is a local grinder with distance experience on Tapeta, and Argos (10) for Brad Cox can stalk the leaders with Luan Machado. Stark Contrast (11), with his Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf form, will likely sit mid-pack or deeper. Stop The Car (12) from the far outside may need to work to get position, potentially adding to the early pressure.

Overall, the presence of multiple tactical-speed horses suggests an honest, fairly strong pace that should give mid-pack closers their chance without necessarily turning into a meltdown.

Key Contenders

Stark Contrast (11) for Michael McCarthy and Kazushi Kimura is the likely favorite and the class of the field, coming off a second in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf and high-level turf form. Handicappers and analysts consider him perhaps the most reliable winner on the card, given his turn of foot, class, and suitability for synthetic. Historical patterns show that top turf form tends to translate extremely well to Tapeta in this race.

Fulleffort (2) for Brad Cox and Irad Ortiz Jr. is a major danger and perhaps the main local form horse, having finished second with a powerful late run in the John Battaglia Memorial over this surface. He closed strongly in that prep, demonstrating that he stays the distance and likes the track. Cox's dominance on the Kentucky circuit and Irad's choice to ride further bolster his credentials.

Chaos Agent (8) for Josie Carroll and Joel Rosario is an X-factor. His debut win at Gulfstream was visually impressive, and Carroll is a recognized expert at preparing horses for synthetic. Rosario's patience suits a colt making his first local start on Tapeta, and handicappers consider Chaos Agent (8) a value play with a high ceiling.

Argos (10) for Brad Cox and Luan Machado is a Grade 1-winning dirt horse making a synthetic try, and Cox may be testing him as a Derby path alternative. If he adapts to Tapeta, his class could overpower the field, especially from a tactical outside stalking position.

Secondary Choices

Turf Star (1) for Graham Motion and John Velazquez is a classy turf horse for a trainer who has already won this race multiple times, including with Animal Kingdom. He should save all the ground on the rail and launch late, making him an excellent exotics horse and potential upsetter.

Two Out Hero (4) for Kevin Attard and Gerardo Corrales is a Woodbine star who had a troubled local prep and is poised for a rebound. Corrales's Tapeta skills make him a logical inclusion.

Medici (6) for Richard Mandella and Mirco Demuro is a California turf/synthetic type whose recent Santa Anita form indicates he's on the rise. With a world-class rider, he can get a smart inside-out trip.

Brave Force (9) for Jack Sisterson and Vincent Cheminaud is the local Tapeta specialist with proven distance form. He may not be as flashy as the top shippers, but his experience at both track and trip is a real asset.

Longshots

Baytown Dreamer (3), Maximus Prime (7), and Stop The Car (12) all have bits of form and connections that could allow them to outperform their odds. Black Hornet (5) for Brendan Walsh has stakes-winning turf form and can stay the trip; he is interesting at a price if he takes to Tapeta.

Wagering angle: The synthetic-friendly Jeff Ruby Steaks betting strategy recommended by some analysts is a win bet on Stark Contrast (11), with an exacta box including Fulleffort (2), Chaos Agent (8), and Argos (10). Horizontally, Stark Contrast (11) should be a primary A, with Fulleffort (2), Chaos Agent (8), and Argos (10) as strong backups; exotics should include Turf Star (1), Two Out Hero (4), Medici (6), and Brave Force (9) at prices.

Race 13 – Maiden Special Weight – 6 Furlongs Tapeta – 3yo Fillies

Post Time

7:05 PM ET

Pace Analysis

This closing maiden for three-year-old fillies at six furlongs should feature a lively pace. Mo Biscuit (1) has early speed, Zengraya (2) can be forward, and Lets Shance It (3) can show foot. Cactus Cairo (4) and Irish Lullaby (5) fit the pressing profile.

New Rose (6), Alexas Hope (7), Munnings Monet (8), Deyemond (9), Fetchmydiamonds (10), Cafe Culture (11), Ruby Regent (12), Arlo's Gammy (13), and Let's Go Barbie (14) all comprise a big, mixed group of potential sprinters with various degrees of early speed. Given the full field and multiple speed types, expect a strong early tempo that could set things up for a filly who can sit mid-pack and pounce.

Key Contenders

Deyemond (9) for Brad Cox and Irad Ortiz Jr. is the likely centerpiece of this race. The combination of Cox and Irad in a Turfway maiden, plus the inside-middle draw, signals a filly who should be very live. She can sit just off the early speed from a clean mid-gate spot and launch turning for home.

Let's Go Barbie (14) for Riley Mott and John Velazquez is drawn widest but has the rider and connections to overcome it. If she has tactical speed, Velazquez can either send to clear or drop in behind the first group and get a three-wide stalking trip, which has been profitable for outside posts at Turfway.

Mo Biscuit (1) for Tommy Humphries and Gerardo Corrales was previously scratched by the trainer from a maiden at Turfway, possibly to wait for this higher-purse spot. From the rail, she has no choice but to go, and if she breaks well, she could prove very stubborn on the front.

Secondary Choices

New Rose (6) for Jena Antonucci and Victor Carrasco is interesting as a likely stalking filly for a barn capable of having them ready. Munnings Monet (8) for Tom Drury and Irving Moncada carries a pedigree that fits synthetic sprints and can sit a comfortable mid-pack trip.

Irish Lullaby (5) for Eoin Harty and Walter Rodriguez may have a turf-synthetic profile that suits this race.

Longshots

Zengraya (2), Lets Shance It (3), Cactus Cairo (4), Alexas Hope (7), Fetchmydiamonds (10), Cafe Culture (11), Ruby Regent (12), and Arlo's Gammy (13) make up a large group of fillies who can each hit the board with some improvement. Mo Biscuit (1) has a prior trainer scratch note that suggests the barn wanted to regroup; she is a volatile but potentially dangerous longshot.

Jockey Notes and Insights

Turfway's stakes day brings a deep rider colony with many of the country's top jockeys.

Irad Ortiz Jr. rides key horses across the card, including Global Sensation (1) in Race 2, Volendam (2) in Race 5, Two Beers By Ten (2) in Race 6, Valiant (5) in Race 8, Archimedes (4) in Race 9, Wadsworth (8) in Race 10, Scratch It (5) in Race 11, and Fulleffort (2) in Race 12, as well as Deyemond (9) in Race 13. His aggressive yet tactical style is especially potent when he can secure forward stalking trips and should be respected in multi-race wagers.

Joel Rosario has several key mounts, highlighted by Mo's Little Darlin (2) in Race 1, Thespian (2) in Race 3, Coach Bargatze (1) in Race 5, Curlin's Gesture (8) in Race 2, Golden Sunshine (3) in Race 7, J J Grey (1) and possibly other stakes mounts, including Chaos Agent (8) in Race 12. Rosario's patient style is well-suited to Tapeta, where timing the late run is crucial.

John Velazquez partners with Nicksie (5) in Race 1, Love Her Lots (8) in Race 4, Bull By The Horns (8) in Race 8, Willy D's (5) in Race 10, Bless Her (8) in Race 11, Turf Star (1) in Race 12, and Let's Go Barbie (14) in Race 13. His strength is placing horses in ideal stalking spots and saving ground, which is powerful on a track with a long stretch.

Local and circuit-strong riders like Luan Machado, Gerardo Corrales, Kazushi Kimura, and Rafael Hernandez bring deep Tapeta experience at Turfway, which can be a deciding factor in tight finishes. Their mounts, particularly for barns like Cox, McPeek, Motion, Maker, and Lobo, should often be upgraded a bit relative to less familiar riders.

Trainer Notes and Insights

Brad Cox sends a powerful string to Turfway, including Literate (1) in the Latonia, Valiant (5) in the Rushaway, Tickled Quist (4) and Wadsworth (8) in the Kentucky Cup Classic, Scratch It (5) in the Bourbonette Oaks, and Fulleffort (2) and Argos (10) in the Jeff Ruby Steaks, as well as Deyemond (9) in the finale. Cox has been dominant on synthetic and in Kentucky stakes, so his entries deserve heavy respect.

Michael Maker has key runners such as Global Sensation (1) in Race 2, Two Beers By Ten (2) in Race 6, and Archimedes (4) in Race 9. Maker's horses generally show up ready at Turfway, especially in Tapeta routes and middle-distance races.

Graham Motion brings several turf-synthetic types, notably Warming (5) in the Latonia, Endlessly (7) in the Kentucky Cup Classic (as a prior Jeff Ruby winner), and Turf Star (1) in the Jeff Ruby Steaks. Motion has historically excelled in this race and with horses transitioning from turf to Tapeta.

Paulo Lobo is an important Tapeta barn at Turfway, with horses like Happy Happy Day (10) and Coalmoon (6) in Race 6, Devassa (6) in Race 7, Resplendence (1) in the Bourbonette Oaks, and Ruby Regent (12) in Race 13. Lobo's horses often demonstrate a strong affinity for synthetic, and his front-running types in particular can be dangerous.

Michael McCarthy and Saffie Joseph Jr. bring selective, high-quality shippers: McCarthy with runners like Small Town (1) in the Animal Kingdom, Sun Chaser (9) in Race 5, La Ville Lumiere (10) in the Bourbonette Oaks, and Stark Contrast (11) in the Jeff Ruby Steaks; Joseph with Bull By The Horns (8) in the Rushaway, a prime class-dropper.

Canadian and Woodbine-based trainers such as Josie Carroll with Chaos Agent (8) and Kevin Attard with Two Out Hero (4) are very comfortable on synthetic and often find live spots in these races.

Best Wagering Strategies and Value Plays

Given the depth of today's card, multi-race bets like the early and late pick 5s and pick 4s are attractive, especially when leaning on clear opinions in the stakes.

Key horses to anchor multi-race sequences:

Race 2: Global Sensation (1) as a strong A with Curlin's Gesture (8) and Falfurrias (10) as backups.

Race 7: Literate (1) as a primary single in the Latonia for many tickets.

Race 8: Use co-A's Bull By The Horns (8) and Rhythm Lady (6) to exploit a possible pace-controlling filly versus class-dropper dynamic.

Race 10: Endlessly (7) as a strong value A single in some sequences, especially given his perfect synthetic record; Mercante (9) as a horse-for-course B.

Race 11: Resplendence (1) as a viable single in some tickets due to projected lone speed and perfect local record; Maximum Offer (7) as a main alternative.

Race 12: Stark Contrast (11) as the main key horse with Fulleffort (2), Chaos Agent (8), and Argos (10) as strong supporting A/B horses.

Value plays noted by handicappers and analysis:

Rhythm Lady (6) in the Rushaway as a filly facing males with legitimate speed figures and potential pace control at an attractive price.

Bull By The Horns (8) in the Rushaway, dropping out of Grade 2 company into an ungraded stakes and likely to get a perfect outside stalking trip.

Endlessly (7) in the Kentucky Cup Classic at around 12‑1 morning line, returning to his best surface where he is undefeated, represents a high-upside price play.

Chaos Agent (8) in the Jeff Ruby Steaks, an X-factor colt with a powerful debut and synthetic-savvy connections, holds value against shorter-priced Stark Contrast (11) and Fulleffort (2).

Resplendence (1) and Maximum Offer (7) in the Bourbonette Oaks both offer tactical advantages that can lead to overlay prices relative to their true win chances.

Exotic structures worth considering:

In the Jeff Ruby Steaks, a win bet on Stark Contrast (11) coupled with an exacta box of Fulleffort (2), Chaos Agent (8), and Argos (10) covers key scenarios and allows for a strong payout if the favorite wins but an intermediate-priced horse fills the second slot.

In the Kentucky Cup Classic, exactas and trifectas keyed on Endlessly (7) over Wadsworth (8), Mercante (9), and Willy D's (5) can leverage his value odds with logical exotics partners.

In the Bourbonette Oaks, exactas keyed with Resplendence (1) on top of Maximum Offer (7), Scratch It (5), Lovely Grey (9), and Bless Her (8) can take advantage of her early-speed edge.

Given your expertise and likely comfort with advanced structures, the optimal approach for today's Turfway card is to build a few press tickets in the late pick 5 using Literate (1), Endlessly (7), Resplendence (1), and Stark Contrast (11) as core singles or two-deep legs, then surround them with spreads in the more chaotic maiden and allowance races.
