Fierceness is a champion American Thoroughbred racehorse born on March 28, 2021, who has established himself as one of the most talented horses in recent years through dominant performances and record-breaking victories.
Background and Breeding
Fierceness is a bay colt bred and owned by Mike Repole in Kentucky. He is sired by City of Light, a Grade 1 winner who captured the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile and Pegasus World Cup, and is out of the mare Nonna Bella, a daughter of Stay Thirsty. Notably, Fierceness is the first winner from his dam and represents the second crop of City of Light. The colt is trained by Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher.
Running Style and Characteristics
Fierceness possesses tactical speed and is described as “a horse built for speed”. His running style is characterized by:
- Early speed ability: He can break sharply and secure good early position
- Pace control: His tactical speed allows him to dictate the pace of races
- Powerful finishing ability: When given a clear lead, he can extend margins dramatically
Racing analysts note that Fierceness is “by far the fastest and most brilliant horse” based on speed figures and his huge margins of victory. However, he has shown some inconsistency when challenged by top-class competition, with observers noting he can be “non-combative” when pressed by elite rivals.
In December 2024, Fierceness underwent successful elective surgery for treatment of his hind ankle in Kentucky.
