Fires when post position is 8 or higher and field size is 10 or more. Outside posts in large fields force horses to either go very wide around the first turn (costing ground) or aggressively fight for inside position early (costing energy). Statistical research consistently shows that outside posts in large dirt fields carry below-average win rates. The disadvantage is most pronounced in sprints where the turn comes quickly and there is no time to find a comfortable position before the pace is set.
