Sovereignty is an American Thoroughbred racehorse who has emerged as one of the most accomplished horses of his generation, achieving historic success in 2025 by winning two legs of the Triple Crown. Foaled on February 22, 2022, Sovereignty became the first horse since Justify’s Triple Crown victory in 2018 to capture multiple Triple Crown races.
Background and Ownership
Sovereignty is owned by Godolphin, the prestigious thoroughbred racing stable owned by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Emir of Dubai. The horse is trained by Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott and regularly ridden by jockey Junior Alvarado.
Pedigree and Bloodlines
Sovereignty boasts an impressive pedigree that combines speed and stamina. His sire is Into Mischief, a Grade I winner who has been North America’s leading sire by purse winnings in multiple years since 2018. Into Mischief has produced other Kentucky Derby winners including Authentic (2020) and Mandaloun (2021).
His dam is Crowned, an unraced mare sired by Bernardini, the 2006 American champion three-year-old who won the Preakness Stakes, Travers Stakes, and Jockey Club Gold Cup. Sovereignty’s maternal grandmother, Mushka, was a Grade I winner of the Spinster Stakes. The horse’s pedigree includes bloodlines from three Triple Crown winners: Secretariat, Seattle Slew, and Affirmed.
Running Style
Sovereignty is characterized as a deep closer with a distinctive come-from-behind running style. This style makes him dependent on multiple variables including pace and traffic conditions during races. His typical race pattern involves:
- Starting from the back of the field
- Settling into the rear division through early portions of races
- Making his move around the far turn
- Rallying wide in the stretch to overtake competitors
This running style proved particularly effective in the Kentucky Derby, where he benefited from a fast early pace that set up his dramatic late rally.
