SPEED FIGURE INCONSISTENCY

Computes the statistical standard deviation of the last 5 valid BRIS speed figures and fires when it reaches 8.0 or higher. An 8-point standard deviation in speed figures is substantial — it means the horse regularly swings between figures that would imply dramatically different competitive ability. Erratic performers are difficult to trust in wagering because their best figures are not reliably reproduced. The swings may reflect inconsistent fitness, recurring physical problems, weather and footing sensitivity, or a temperamental horse.
