WIDE TRIP PATTERN

Counts starts in the last 5 where the first-call position is at least 3 positions worse (wider) than the post position, and fires when this occurs in 3 or more starts. Running wide at the first call — especially on the first turn — forces a horse to cover extra ground equivalent to several lengths over the course of the race. A horse that consistently runs wide either has a tendency to lug out, has gate habits that place it outside the ideal traffic path, or is being ridden in a way that naturally takes it wide.
