Exotics

In horse racing, “exotics” are any bets that involve more than one horse and/or more than one race, as opposed to simple win/place/show bets on a single runner in a single race.

What “exotics” means

• An exotic bet is any wager that goes beyond a straight win, place, or show on one horse.
• These bets usually require you to either pick multiple horses in the same race (e.g., exacta, trifecta, superfecta) or pick winners across multiple consecutive races (e.g., Daily Double, Pick 3, Pick 4, Pick 5, Pick 6).
• They are harder to hit but typically offer higher payouts and usually carry a higher takeout than straight bets.

Common types of exotic bets

• Vertical exotics (same race): exacta, quinella, trifecta, superfecta, super high five, etc.
• Horizontal exotics (multiple races): Daily Double, Pick 3, Pick 4, Pick 5, Pick 6 and similar multi-race “pick” bets.
• Variations and structures: boxes, wheels, and keys are ways of structuring exotic tickets, but they are still exotic wagers because they involve multiple horses and combinations.
