Race Day Overview — Santa Anita Park, Saturday, April 18, 2026

Santa Anita Park kicks off the second day of its springtime Hollywood Meet with a full 10-race Saturday card that carries something for every level of handicapper. The centerpiece is the Grade 3, $100,000 American Stakes in Race 7 — one mile on turf for older horses — which brings back the Grade 1 winner King Of Gosford (POST 3) following a layoff, setting up a compelling matchup against the barn's own Almendares (POST 5) and Hall of Fame trainer Richard Mandella's formidable Sumter (POST 2). The card also features a pair of $65,000 maiden special weight turf sprints bookending the program, the $100,000 John Shear Lassie Stakes for fillies on turf in Race 3, and a full slate of claiming and allowance contests that offer legitimate wagering value throughout.

The Hollywood Meet always generates excitement among Southern California racing fans, and this first Saturday is no exception. Jockey assignments are locked in across the card with a mix of colony leaders and proven turf specialists — Florent Geroux, Tiago Pereira, Antonio Fresu, and Juan Hernandez are particularly active. Trainer Philip D'Amato is the most prominent presence on the card, saddling horses in Races 3, 5, 7, 9, and 10, while Steve Knapp, Doug O'Neill, and the Mullins barn each appear multiple times.

The card offers a Pick 5 that will likely span Races 6 through 10, a Rainbow Pick 6 for the full card, and multiple multi-race sequences that reward thorough handicapping work. Given the turf-heavy nature of this Saturday program — six of ten races are run on the grass — surface condition and any emerging track bias will be critical factors all afternoon and into the evening.

Weather and Track Conditions

The Los Angeles basin is experiencing a stretch of mild, seasonably warm spring weather heading into this weekend. Expect partly cloudy skies over the San Gabriel Mountains with afternoon temperatures in the mid-60s Fahrenheit at post time for the early races, warming slightly into the evening. Wind out of the west-southwest at approximately 8-12 mph is not expected to be a significant factor.

The main track is listed as fast and is expected to remain so throughout the card. Santa Anita's main track has historically favored horses with early speed, particularly in sprints, and that tendency has been consistent early in the Hollywood Meet.

The turf course is listed as firm, which is ideal for grass racing and will place a premium on tactical positioning and finishing kick rather than grinding. A firm Arcadia turf course historically plays fairly even with a slight edge to horses that can settle just off the pace and make one sustained run in the lane. Deep closers who require a truly soft or yielding course will find the going less favorable. No rain is in the forecast, so the turf should remain at or near firm throughout the card.

Track Bias and Post Position Analysis

On the Santa Anita main track under fast conditions, a well-documented early speed bias tends to emerge in sprint distances. Horses able to secure a clean trip from the inside posts in 6-furlong and 7-furlong sprints have historically posted a strong win percentage at Santa Anita, and early indications from the Friday Hollywood Meet opener suggest that dynamic is carrying into this meet. Route races on the main track at Santa Anita favor stalkers who can sit second or third and pounce in the stretch; pure wire-to-wire victories at a mile and a quarter are less common.

On the turf course at 5 1/2 furlongs and 6 furlongs, posts 1 through 4 have historically produced a meaningful advantage due to the tight first turn and the ability to save ground on the rail. At a mile on the Arcadia turf, the chute start evens the post position bias somewhat, though inside posts still hold a marginal edge through the first quarter.

For the 7 1/2-furlong turf sprints on the card today, posts 1 through 5 should be preferred, and handicappers should note that horses drawn wide who figure to use early energy to secure position may not have enough left late on a firm course.

RACE 1 — Post 4:00 — 1430f | T | S | Md Sp Wt | BOF | Purse $65,000

This is a maiden special weight turf sprint for fillies and mares. The 7 1/2-furlong distance on the Arcadia turf favors horses with a relaxed early running style who can find a comfortable position and sustain a run. With eight entrants and three morning-line co-favorites at 2-1, 4-1, and 5-1, this is a competitive opener but not without a clear direction.

Race 1

Pace Analysis

The early pace picture is unsettled in this field of first-time and lightly raced starters. She's No Quant (POST 3) broke from the gate and was immediately checked on debut, rendering that pace performance essentially useless. Midnight Cowgirl (POST 5) figures to be forwardly placed based on trainer Ryan Hanson's typical patterns with young fillies. Christa Mcauliffe (POST 6) has the look of a presser. The overall pace should be honest rather than suicidal given the inexperience of many of these entrants, setting up for a closer or a well-rated stalker.

Key Contenders

She's No Quant (POST 3) is the morning-line favorite at 2-1 and the consensus top selection. Trained by Edward Freeman and piloted by Kazushi Kimura, this filly's debut on March 14 was a disaster through no fault of her own — she was checked at the start, ran rank, and was carried wide before getting bumped late in the lane. The trip trouble was so severe it essentially renders that effort a non-race. The breeding suggests turf aptitude, and Freeman has quietly been effective with turf-bound fillies getting a second start at Santa Anita. Kimura is an excellent turf jockey who should have this filly relaxed and settling early given how rank she was first out. The expectation is that a clean gate break and a patient trip reveals a much improved performance. She's deserving of her favoritism.

Midnight Cowgirl (POST 5) at 4-1 trained by Ryan Hanson with E. Maldonado named to ride. This filly has shown workouts consistent with a horse ready to compete first or second out on turf. Hanson doesn't often send first-time starters into maiden special weight company unless they're well-prepared. Midnight Cowgirl (POST 5) drew post 5 which allows her rider to assess the break and determine whether to press or stalk. She's a legitimate contender at a price that offers some value.

Secondary Choices

Christa Mcauliffe (POST 6) at 5-1 for trainer Steven Miyadi and Antonio Fresu is a barn and jockey combination worth noting early in the Hollywood Meet when they come in ready. Miyadi is a patient conditioner who places his horses well, and a 5-1 maiden at this level with a sharp rider deserves attention. This filly figures to press the pace or sit just off it and is bred well enough for the turf distance.

Holdthatrainbow (POST 2) at 5-1 for trainer Carla Gaines and Florent Geroux is the second barnmate of the day for Gaines, who will also run Hot Day Girl (POST 9) in Race 5. Geroux is one of the better turf jockeys on the West Coast circuit and brings the rail post into play. Gaines has shown a knack for placing lightly raced fillies effectively in the right spots, and Holdthatrainbow (POST 2) deserves a line in your exotics.

Longshots

Risky Pleasure (POST 7) at 6-1 for Craig Lewis and Juan Hernandez has shown some flash in morning training and offers a touch of value if the pace develops in her favor from a wider post. Melba Montgomery (POST 8) at 6-1 for Steve Knapp is another to consider — Knapp runs an efficient barn and doesn't waste starts. Little Gator (POST 4) at 15-1 and Kitty Mac (POST 1) at 20-1 are difficult to recommend at face value without stronger evidence of turf aptitude or readiness. Lyndee's Dream (POST 3 in Race 5, not this field) is not in this race — to be clear on this opener, the most likely throwouts are Kitty Mac (POST 1) at 20-1 and Little Gator (POST 4) at 15-1.

Selections

Win: She's No Quant (POST 3) Place: Midnight Cowgirl (POST 5) Show: Holdthatrainbow (POST 2)

Betting Strategy: Use She's No Quant (POST 3) on top of a trifecta with Midnight Cowgirl (POST 5) and Holdthatrainbow (POST 2) / Christa Mcauliffe (POST 6) underneath. The 2-1 morning line on She's No Quant (POST 3) is perhaps a touch short for a maiden turf race, so if she drifts toward 3-1 or higher at the windows, a straight win bet becomes more attractive.

RACE 2 — Post 4:32 — 1320f | D | CO | OClm 30000 | BUN | Purse $30,000

An optional claiming sprint at $30,000 for older horses on the main track. Seven entrants make this a manageable race to handicap. Jeff Mullins saddles two horses — Tessuto (POST 3) and Liam Smith (POST 5) — giving his barn significant leverage in the outcome.

Race 2

Pace Analysis

Liam Smith (POST 5) figures to be the controlling speed in this spot. The morning-line 1-1 favorite has the look of a horse who wants to lead, and with Hernandez aboard, expect him to be sent from the gate. Cody Boy (POST 4) with Victor Espinoza is another who figures to contest the pace from the start. Tessuto (POST 3) under Tiago Pereira may get a stalking trip, which could set up well if the front pair soften each other. The pace should be competitively honest for a 6 1/2-furlong sprint.

Key Contenders

Liam Smith (POST 5) is the overwhelming morning-line favorite at 1-1 and for good reason. Trained by Jeff Mullins — one of the better sprint trainers on the West Coast — and piloted by Juan Hernandez, Liam Smith (POST 5) has the class, style, and tactical position to control this race from the front. At the $30,000 claiming level, horses with speed that can also rate are enormously effective. Mullins and Hernandez have developed a productive working relationship on the Southern California circuit, and the inside-ish post 5 in a seven-horse field is workable.

Tessuto (POST 3) at 4-1 is the stablemate and will likely be positioned to benefit from any pace pressure generated by Liam Smith (POST 5). Mullins running two horses in this spot usually means he isn't concerned about splitting votes — both are live. Tessuto (POST 3) with Pereira aboard could be the one to beat if Liam Smith (POST 5) faces a contentious early pace from Cody Boy (POST 4).

Secondary Choices

Cody Boy (POST 4) at 4-1 for Javier Jose Sierra and Victor Espinoza is interesting. Espinoza has a lengthy history at Santa Anita and rarely takes a mount without a reason. If Cody Boy (POST 4) can establish position early without burning too much energy, he could compete into the stretch. Tapalo (POST 7) at 5-1 for Steve Knapp and E. Jaramillo gets the outside post but is worth watching if the pace collapses inward.

Longshots

Kid Dynasty (POST 1) at 8-1 for Tim Yakteen and Kazushi Kimura has the rail, which in a sprint could be an asset. Yakteen is a competent trainer who occasionally springs a surprise in optional claiming company. Unbridled Vision (POST 2) at 30-1 and Spearfish (POST 6) at 30-1 are difficult to recommend in a race where the favorite is this short and this dominant on paper.

Selections

Win: Liam Smith (POST 5) Place: Tessuto (POST 3) Show: Cody Boy (POST 4)

Betting Strategy: With Liam Smith (POST 5) at even money, the win bet is likely unattractive from a value standpoint. Focus on the exacta using Liam Smith (POST 5) on top of Tessuto (POST 3), Cody Boy (POST 4), and Tapalo (POST 7). The key multi-race play here is using Liam Smith (POST 5) as a single in the early Pick 4 if the sequence runs from Race 2 onward.

RACE 3 — Post 5:04 — 1430f | T | N | JShearL100k | BON | Purse $100,000

The John Shear Lassie Stakes for fillies and mares at 7 1/2 furlongs on the Arcadia turf. A stakes-quality five-horse field with three co-morning-line favorites at 2-1 — Iriseach (POST 1), Later Than Planned (POST 3), and Track Tiger (POST 5). Philip D'Amato controls two of those three co-favorites, adding a fascinating training room dynamic to an already intriguing race.

Race 3

Pace Analysis

Track Tiger (POST 5) for D'Amato and Jaramillo figures as a prominent early runner from the outside post. Iriseach (POST 1) for the same barn — D'Amato — draws the rail and will likely be ridden more conservatively by Fresu, looking to find a comfortable stalking position. Later Than Planned (POST 3), also D'Amato, rounds out a trio that gives the barn remarkable control over the pace scenario. Won For Lou (POST 4) for Doug O'Neill and Maldonado will be positioned tactically. Caro Buono (POST 2) at 8-1 may press or rate depending on how the race sets up. The pace should be moderate to honest, setting up for the deep closing type to make a run.

Key Contenders

Iriseach (POST 1) at 2-1 draws the coveted rail position and gets the experienced turf pilot Antonio Fresu. For a 7 1/2-furlong turf stakes where ground-saving is paramount, post 1 is a significant asset. D'Amato has an excellent record in turf stakes with fillies at Santa Anita, and Iriseach (POST 1) is clearly one of his top weapons here. She figures to rate kindly off the pace and be produced for a run into the stretch.

Later Than Planned (POST 3) at 2-1 with Hector Isaac Berrios splits the D'Amato vote but is equally respected. Post 3 is also a desirable draw at this distance, and Berrios has been riding with confidence. If forced to choose within the barn, Iriseach (POST 1) holds a slight edge due to the rail, but Later Than Planned (POST 3) must be used in all exotics.

Track Tiger (POST 5) at 2-1 is the third D'Amato runner and the widest of the trio. Jaramillo will need to make tactical decisions early from post 5. If Track Tiger (POST 5) is sent to the lead, she could wire the field on the firm turf. If she's rated off the pace from five wide, she gives up ground. Still, the talent level here warrants inclusion.

Secondary Choices

Won For Lou (POST 4) at 10-1 for Doug O'Neill and Maldonado is the primary non-D'Amato threat. O'Neill doesn't enter horses in stakes races without believing they belong, and MALDONADO has the tactical ability to find a sweet trip from post 4. At 10-1, if Won For Lou (POST 4) fires her best effort, the exacta and trifecta payoffs could be substantial.

Longshots

Caro Buono (POST 2) at 8-1 for Leonard Powell and Ayuso is the remaining entrant and should not be overlooked entirely in what is a small, quality field. Powell is a capable conditioner and Caro Buono (POST 2) drew a decent middle post. However, with three D'Amato runners dominating the odds board, her path to victory is narrow.

Selections

Win: Iriseach (POST 1) Place: Later Than Planned (POST 3) Show: Track Tiger (POST 5)

Betting Strategy: Cover all three D'Amato fillies in your trifecta box with Won For Lou (POST 4) as the primary upset threat. An exacta box of Iriseach (POST 1), Later Than Planned (POST 3), and Track Tiger (POST 5) is a reasonable investment given D'Amato's barn dominance in this spot. For win-place betting, Iriseach (POST 1) is the preferred single based on post position.

RACE 4 — Post 5:36 — 1760f | D | CO | OClm 10000 | BUM | Purse $21,000

A one-mile optional claiming race at the $10,000 level for older fillies and mares on the main track. Theresasilverlinin (POST 7) is the morning-line favorite at 2-1 for trainer Steve Knapp and Armando Ayuso.

Race 4

Pace Analysis

At a mile on the main track with a field that includes some stretch-out types, the pace will likely be moderate early with the race settling after the first quarter. Ryan's Girl (POST 6) for Genaro Vallejo and Kimura figures to be forwardly placed. She's Splendid (POST 1) with Abel Lezcano could press from the rail. Theresasilverlinin (POST 7) will likely stalk and pounce in the Knapp barn's typical style. The setup favors the horse with the best combination of class and late pace.

Key Contenders

Theresasilverlinin (POST 7) at 2-1 is Knapp's morning-line choice, and the trainer has been active on this card. With Ayuso named, this filly draws post 7 in an eight-horse field, giving her rider options to sit mid-pack and make one run. Knapp's horses often move up when targeting a class drop to $10,000 optional claiming level, and the one-mile route suits a more seasoned, class-oriented mare.

She's Splendid (POST 1) at 4-1 for Brendan Galvin and Abel Lezcano has rail position and the tactical speed to either lead or press. Galvin has been quietly solid with older claiming mares, and the rail at a mile on the main track is an asset. LEZCANO has excellent tactical instincts.

Secondary Choices

Ryan's Girl (POST 6) at 4-1 for Vallejo and Kimura rates as a co-secondary choice. Kimura's proficiency at Santa Anita is well established, and Ryan's Girl (POST 6) appears to have the tactical speed to press the pace and sustain her run. Love Our Family (POST 3) at 6-1 for Gary Stute and Orantes is a dangerous deeper runner — Stute is experienced with older claiming mares and knows how to place them advantageously.

Longshots

Rousing Jewel (POST 4) at 8-1 for Steve Knapp and Fresu is the second Knapp entry, and occasionally the trainer's second string beats his own favorite. Unbridled Scholar (POST 5) at 8-1 for Blaine Wright and Kyle Frey is capable of a figure. Mastery Kat (POST 8) at 10-1 for Jamey Thomas and Pereira has shown ability but must overcome the outside post. Perfect Life (POST 2) at 15-1 for Campuzano is a longshot who figures to go off at generous odds and is difficult to recommend at this price.

Selections

Win: Theresasilverlinin (POST 7) Place: She's Splendid (POST 1) Show: Ryan's Girl (POST 6)

Betting Strategy: Theresasilverlinin (POST 7) is the right horse to single in the Pick 4 if you're looking for a reliable leg. The exacta of Theresasilverlinin (POST 7) over She's Splendid (POST 1) is the primary play. Trifecta key: Theresasilverlinin (POST 7) over She's Splendid (POST 1) / Ryan's Girl (POST 6) / Love Our Family (POST 3).

RACE 5 — Post 6:05 — 1430f | T | S | Md Sp Wt | BOF | Purse $65,000

A second maiden special weight turf sprint for fillies and mares at 7 1/2 furlongs. Nine entrants make this a full field, and Marla Hooch (POST 6) for Philip D'Amato and Armando Ayuso is the 2-1 morning-line favorite. D'Amato again plays a central role in the race outcome.

Race 5

Pace Analysis

With nine fillies going 7 1/2 furlongs on a firm Arcadia turf, the pace question centers on who is willing to press early. Jacklyn Lucas (POST 1) for Miyadi and Fresu draws the rail and will likely seek to save ground from the start — whether she's sent or rates depends on her natural inclinations. The Loan Exchange (POST 8) for Antonio Garcia and Hernandez has the look of a forwardly-placed type from a wider draw, which could create some early tempo. The Loan Exchange (POST 8) pressing wide tends to set things up for closers. Marla Hooch (POST 6) figures as a stalker for D'Amato.

Key Contenders

Marla Hooch (POST 6) at 2-1 is D'Amato's representative and the morning-line favorite. The D'Amato barn has been prolific with maiden turf fillies at Santa Anita, and Ayuso has been riding confidently. Post 6 in a nine-horse field is workable, and the 7 1/2-furlong turf trip suits D'Amato's preferred style of training grass runners to rate and finish. This is the horse to beat.

Jacklyn Lucas (POST 1) at 4-1 for Steven Miyadi and Antonio Fresu draws the rail. Miyadi and Fresu have shown chemistry on this circuit, and the rail post in a maiden turf sprint is a real advantage. If Jacklyn Lucas (POST 1) can get out cleanly and find a comfortable position, she could get a significant trip benefit.

Secondary Choices

The Loan Exchange (POST 8) at 4-1 for Antonio Garcia and Hernandez is a co-morning-line secondary choice. Wide post is a concern on turf, but Hernandez is adept at finding the best path from difficult draws. If she's forwardly placed early, she could hold on. Impressionistic (POST 7) at 6-1 for Leonard Powell and Jaramillo is another to consider — Powell is a capable conditioner and Impressionistic (POST 7) has shown workouts consistent with a grass-ready filly.

Longshots

Magic Carpet Ride (POST 5) at 8-1 for Steve Knapp and TC Baze is a veteran jockey-trainer combination that commands respect. Baze has ridden at Santa Anita for decades and consistently gets the most out of his mounts. Fancy Danzing (POST 4) at 8-1 for D. Wayne Baker and Epifanio Garcia is another with turf bloodlines that suggest the distance should suit. SURPRISE D'ORO (POST 2) at 12-1 for Hector Palma and Pereira is a combination with occasional upside. Hot Day Girl (POST 9) at 12-1 for Carla Gaines and Berrios rounds out the field — Gaines has already shown she's ready for the meet with Holdthatrainbow (POST 2) in Race 1. Lyndee's Dream (POST 3) at 20-1 for Antonio Garcia and Frey is the longest of the prices worth noting — Garcia runs two in this race, which suggests some optimism on one or both.

Selections

Win: Marla Hooch (POST 6) Place: Jacklyn Lucas (POST 1) Show: The Loan Exchange (POST 8)

Betting Strategy: Marla Hooch (POST 6) at 2-1 will likely be bet down further given D'Amato's record in this spot. If you're playing her to win, go early. The better play may be keying Marla Hooch (POST 6) on top of the exacta with Jacklyn Lucas (POST 1), Impressionistic (POST 7), and The Loan Exchange (POST 8) underneath. Include Magic Carpet Ride (POST 5) in wider trifecta coverage.

RACE 6 — Post 6:35 — 1210f | D | M | Md 12500 | GOM | Purse $16,000

A maiden $12,500 claiming sprint at 6 furlongs on the main track. Thirteen entrants make this a sprawling, difficult race to handicap with precision. Twisted Humor (POST 1) is the 2-1 morning-line choice for Jeff Bonde and E. Maldonado, while Bitter Truth (POST 12) at 4-1 for Craig Lewis and Jaramillo is the second choice.

Race 6

Pace Analysis

Thirteen horses going six furlongs on the main track in maiden claiming company means chaos is possible from the gate. Twisted Humor (POST 1) has the rail and the speed to lead, which is a significant advantage on a track where rail runners in sprints have been effective. Bitter Truth (POST 12) from the far outside will be at a disadvantage if the speed holds. The pace will likely be fast early in this large field.

Key Contenders

Twisted Humor (POST 1) at 2-1 for Jeff Bonde and Maldonado is the clear class of this field based on morning-line positioning. The rail is an asset in a six-furlong maiden claiming sprint where early position is often decisive. Bonde is an effective trainer in this tier of claiming racing and has Maldonado navigating what should be a wire-to-wire or near-front-running effort.

Bitter Truth (POST 12) at 4-1 for Craig Lewis and Jaramillo is the second betting choice but faces a challenge from the far outside post. Lewis is capable and Jaramillo is comfortable on the main track, but the wide draw in a sprint with a large field is a real obstacle unless Bitter Truth (POST 12) can sweep the field late with a powerful closing run.

Secondary Choices

Play For Me (POST 11) at 6-1 for Steve Knapp and Tiago Pereira is a Knapp barn runner that deserves attention — Knapp is entering multiple horses on this card and clearly has his stable sharp early in the meet. Julia Street (POST 7) at 10-1 for Knapp and Espinoza is the second Knapp entry in this race, giving the barn a second chance at the trifecta. Lovely Medaglia (POST 3) at 10-1 for Hector Palma and Frey is a turf-bred name running on dirt, which usually signals a horse ready for a synthetic or softer surface — approach with caution.

Longshots

Vronaway (POST 10) at 10-1 for D. Wayne Baker and Garcia, Duchess Cat (POST 9) at 15-1 for Arturo Williams and Belmont, Tina's Princess (POST 13) at 12-1 for Edwin Alvarez and Erick Garcia, Spicy Rosso (POST 8) at 20-1 for Jamey Thomas and Lezcano, Kambree's Flyer (POST 4) at 20-1 for Daniel Jensen and TC Baze, Bernie's Big Baby (POST 2) at 20-1 for Marcia Stortz and Herrera, Palace Mischief (POST 5) at 30-1 for Jorge Bautista and Orduna-Rojas, and Despite (POST 6) at 30-1 for Gloria Haley and Bautista Alfredo are all deep in the field and require exceptional trips to compete. Kambree's Flyer (POST 4) with TC Baze is the most interesting of the longshot contingent — Baze rarely takes losing mounts, and even at 20-1, his presence merits a note.

Selections

Win: Twisted Humor (POST 1) Place: Bitter Truth (POST 12) Show: Play For Me (POST 11)

Betting Strategy: The key is Twisted Humor (POST 1) on top. Use him widely in trifectas given the size of the field — you want multiple combinations underneath. A $1 trifecta key of Twisted Humor (POST 1) over Bitter Truth (POST 12) / Play For Me (POST 11) / Julia Street (POST 7) / Vronaway (POST 10) is a reasonable structure. In a 13-horse maiden claiming sprint, the trifecta can pay significantly even with a short favorite on top.

RACE 7 — Post 7:05 — 1760f | T | G3 | Americn-G3 | CUN | Purse $100,000

The Grade 3 American Stakes — the featured race of the day. One mile on the Arcadia turf for older horses. Seven entrants including the returning Grade 1 winner King Of Gosford (POST 3) making his comeback from a layoff, trained by Philip D'Amato. Richard Mandella saddles two — Sumter (POST 2) and Seal Team (POST 6) — creating another fascinating trainer battle at the top of the card.

Race 7

Pace Analysis

Genius Jimmy (POST 7) for Michael McCarthy and Juan Hernandez figures as a potential pace setter from the outside post in what should be a small but quality field. Captain Choochies (POST 4) for George Papaprodromou and Geroux may also contest the early fractions. Sumter (POST 2) under Hall of Famer Mike Smith will be given a patient, stalking ride — Smith rarely overcomes his horses in turf routes and will be looking to save ground from post 2. King Of Gosford (POST 3) under Jaramillo will need to be positioned wisely given his return from a layoff; D'Amato typically brings horses back with a conservative first-up run in mind, though King Of Gosford (POST 3) is talented enough to be competitive fresh. Almendares (POST 5) with Fresu is the other D'Amato runner and may be the barn's primary weapon in this race.

Key Contenders

Sumter (POST 2) at 2-1 co-favorite is Richard Mandella's top selection, paired with Mike Smith — arguably the greatest turf rider in California racing history. Mandella and Smith are an almost unbeatable combination in grass routes at Santa Anita. Sumter (POST 2) draws post 2, which is ideal at one mile on the Arcadia turf. The Mandella barn's record in Grade 3 turf routes at this track is exceptional, and with Smith in the saddle, Sumter (POST 2) gets every possible tactical advantage. He is the horse to beat.

Almendares (POST 5) at 2-1 co-favorite for D'Amato and Fresu is the other co-morning-line choice and the D'Amato barn's primary runner in this spot, given that King Of Gosford (POST 3) is returning from a layoff. Almendares (POST 5) likely has sharper fitness heading into this race and gets a capable turf pilot in Fresu. Post 5 at one mile on the Arcadia turf is manageable. If D'Amato's barn fires at full strength, Almendares (POST 5) is a legitimate Grade 3 winner in the making.

King Of Gosford (POST 3) at 4-1 is the headline name — a Grade 1 winner returning from a layoff under Jaramillo for D'Amato. The news that he's making his comeback in this specific race is significant. D'Amato wouldn't bring a Grade 1 winner back in a Grade 3 spot unless he felt the horse was ready to perform. The concern is the absence from racing, but if King Of Gosford (POST 3) is anywhere near his best form, he's the class of this field. At 4-1, there is genuine value if his conditioning is sharp.

Secondary Choices

Seal Team (POST 6) at 5-1 is Mandella's second entry with Hector Isaac Berrios aboard. In a field where Mandella runs two, Seal Team (POST 6) could easily outperform his price if Sumter (POST 2) draws the bulk of the attention. Berrios has ridden professionally on the West Coast circuit and is comfortable in stakes company. Seal Team (POST 6) at 5-1 is excellent each-way value.

Longshots

Genius Jimmy (POST 7) at 8-1 for Michael McCarthy and Hernandez is the primary alternative at a real price. McCarthy is one of the better conditioners in Southern California with turf horses, and Hernandez is engaged and riding sharp. Genius Jimmy (POST 7) could set a pace that collapses in his favor if unchallenged early, though a seven-horse field at one mile on firm turf rarely sees a wire-to-wire winner without genuine ability. Captain Choochies (POST 4) at 10-1 for Papaprodromou and Geroux is the most interesting longshot — Geroux is an elite turf jockey and Papaprodromou has spotted horses well in graded stakes spots before. A top-four finish would not shock. Twirling Point (POST 1) at 15-1 for Blaine Wright and Ricardo Gonzalez is the longest of the seven and the most difficult to endorse, though the rail post at one mile on turf always generates conversation.

Selections

Win: Sumter (POST 2) Place: King Of Gosford (POST 3) Show: Almendares (POST 5)

Betting Strategy: The American Stakes is the race of the day and deserves your most careful wagering attention. Sumter (POST 2) is the play on top — the Mandella/Smith combination in a turf route at Santa Anita is a marquee angle. King Of Gosford (POST 3) at 4-1 offers value for a Grade 1 horse returning fresh, and at that price, a win bet is defensible. The exacta of Sumter (POST 2) over King Of Gosford (POST 3) is the primary ticket. Box the trifecta of Sumter (POST 2), King Of Gosford (POST 3), Almendares (POST 5), and Seal Team (POST 6) at a minimum. This is the race to focus your exotic investment for the day.

RACE 8 — Post 7:35 — 1760f | D | C | Clm 10000b | BUN | Purse $18,000

A one-mile claiming race at $10,000 on the main track for males. Nine entrants with a fascinating three-way battle at the top of the odds board — Irish Element (POST 2) at 2-1 for Doug O'Neill and Jaramillo, co-favorite White Mountain (POST 9) at 2-1 for Ryan Hanson and TC Baze, and Typhoon Tommy (POST 1) at 4-1 for Edwin Alvarez and Edgar Payeras. Expert handicappers have identified Irish Element (POST 2) as the Best Bet of the day on this card.

Race 8

Pace Analysis

At one mile on the main track, the pace will be set by whoever goes to the lead from the starting gate. Typhoon Tommy (POST 1) from the rail could be sent on early. Irish Element (POST 2) under Jaramillo is more likely to stalk than lead. White Mountain (POST 9) from the outside post with Baze will likely secure a patient position and make a sustained run. The pace scenario at a mile in $10,000 claiming company should be moderate, which typically benefits stalkers and closers.

Key Contenders

Irish Element (POST 2) at 2-1 is the consensus Best Bet of the day from expert handicappers. Trained by Doug O'Neill and ridden by Jaramillo, Irish Element (POST 2) draws post 2 at one mile on the main track — a favorable position that allows the rider to rate just off the pace and make one controlled move. O'Neill is excellent with horses at this claiming level, and the trainer-jockey combination of O'Neill and Jaramillo has been productive throughout the Hollywood Meet's early days. The Best Bet designation carries weight — when handicappers identify a horse in a claiming route as a top selection, it typically reflects a meaningful edge in form, fitness, and tactical positioning.

White Mountain (POST 9) at 2-1 for Ryan Hanson and TC Baze is the other co-favorite. Baze choosing to ride this horse from the outside post at a mile on the main track suggests he believes in White Mountain (POST 9)'s ability to close from behind. Hanson has a solid record with older claimers, and Baze's reading of a race is second to none. If Irish Element (POST 2) stumbles out of the gate or gets into trouble, White Mountain (POST 9) sweeps past.

Secondary Choices

Typhoon Tommy (POST 1) at 4-1 for Alvarez and Payeras has the rail and may try to control the race on the front end. At this claiming level, a horse that leads with a moderate pace can be very difficult to catch. Aloha Chrome (POST 5) at 6-1 for Jeff Bonde and Kyle Frey is another trainer-jockey combination that appears in sprint and route company with purpose. Bonde has been active and effective early in the meet.

Longshots

Audible Silence (POST 3) at 8-1 for Val Brinkerhoff and Alfredo Bautista is a potential price play if the pace collapses in front of him. Bandolero (POST 7) at 12-1 for Steve Knapp and Ricardo Gonzalez is a Knapp barn runner that rarely goes completely ignored — Knapp's horses fire more often than the odds suggest at this level. Macho Man (POST 8) at 12-1 for Mike Puype and Orantes is difficult to endorse without a clear angle. Mischief Moments (POST 4) at 30-1 for Ruben Gomez and Husain Ali and Fincairn (POST 6) at 30-1 for Gloria Haley and Pereira are the deepest prices in the field and best left out of all but the widest exotic structures.

Selections

Win: Irish Element (POST 2) Place: White Mountain (POST 9) Show: Typhoon Tommy (POST 1)

Betting Strategy: Irish Element (POST 2) is the Best Bet of the card. A straight win bet at 2-1 may not offer tremendous monetary value, but the confidence level here is high enough to justify a win ticket. Key the exacta of Irish Element (POST 2) over White Mountain (POST 9), Typhoon Tommy (POST 1), and Aloha Chrome (POST 5). Reverse the Irish Element (POST 2) / White Mountain (POST 9) exacta as insurance.

RACE 9 — Post 8:05 — 1430f | T | A | Alw 67000n1x | BUM | Purse $67,000

A $67,000 allowance for fillies and mares at 7 1/2 furlongs on the Arcadia turf. Nine entrants with Mars Magic (POST 3) at 4-1 for D. Wayne Baker and Victor Espinoza and Rethink (POST 8) at 4-1 for Philip D'Amato and Antonio Fresu sharing morning-line favoritism. This race features a deep, quality field with Hall of Fame trainer Neil Drysdale running Bette Davis Eyes (POST 6) and veteran conditioner R.B. Hess with Shining River (POST 4).

Race 9

Pace Analysis

Tequilaandtherapy (POST 9) for O'Neill and Maldonado figures as a potential pace setter from the outside post. Andiamo Ragazza (POST 1) for Peter Miller and Berrios from the rail will seek to save ground and rate kindly off whatever pace develops. Mars Magic (POST 3) with Espinoza will be placed tactically — Espinoza has the experience to find the best position in a nine-horse turf field from post 3. The pace should be competitive but manageable, setting up for a horse with turf gears to dominate the stretch.

Key Contenders

Mars Magic (POST 3) at 4-1 for D. Wayne Baker and Victor Espinoza is a legitimate co-favorite with strong claims. Post 3 at 7 1/2 furlongs on the Arcadia turf is an excellent draw, and Baker has been placing his turf fillies in the right spots. Espinoza at this stage of his career reserves his mounts for horses he believes in, and his presence on Mars Magic (POST 3) is an endorsement.

Rethink (POST 8) at 4-1 for Philip D'Amato and Fresu is the other co-morning-line choice. D'Amato's third turf runner of the day — he's had Iriseach (POST 1) in Race 3, multiple runners in Race 7 — and the trainer clearly has his barn dialed in for this meet. Rethink (POST 8) draws post 8 in a nine-horse field, which is manageable on the turf at this distance. Fresu is the turf pilot D'Amato trusts.

Andiamo Ragazza (POST 1) at 5-1 for Peter Miller and Berrios has the rail post, which is a genuine advantage. Miller is a top-tier West Coast trainer with an excellent record in turf allowance company, and Andiamo Ragazza (POST 1) draws perfectly to save ground throughout. Berrios has been riding with poise and picks up what should be a live mount here.

Secondary Choices

Marian Cross (POST 7) at 5-1 for Daniel Blacker and Jaramillo is interesting — Blacker saddles Kitty Mac (POST 1) in Race 1 and Marian Cross (POST 7) here, suggesting a productive training day if both fire. Marian Cross (POST 7) at 5-1 with Jaramillo is a combination worth including in exotics. Yoga Master (POST 2) at 6-1 for Leonard Powell and Ayuso is a Powell runner with a turf pedigree that could outperform her odds if the pace sets up correctly. Tequilaandtherapy (POST 9) at 6-1 for O'Neill and Maldonado — if she sets pace from post 9 and controls the tempo, she could prove difficult to catch.

Longshots

Saariselka (POST 5) at 8-1 for Carla Gaines and Florent Geroux is an intriguing combination. Gaines has been active in this meet and Geroux is one of the best turf pilots in the country. At 8-1, Saariselka (POST 5) offers real value if she has a turf pedigree suited to the firm Arcadia course. Bette Davis Eyes (POST 6) at 8-1 for Neil Drysdale and Hernandez is the most blue-blooded trainer-horse combination in the race. Drysdale's record in California turf allowance company is legendary, and while he runs fewer horses than he once did, his entrants are always respected. Shining River (POST 4) at 12-1 for R.B. Hess and K.J. Desormeaux is another veteran combination — Desormeaux is a Hall of Famer who knows this track intimately. Shining River (POST 4) at 12-1 could surface as a value play if her fitness is sharp.

Selections

Win: Mars Magic (POST 3) Place: Rethink (POST 8) Show: Andiamo Ragazza (POST 1)

Betting Strategy: This is an excellent race for exotic wagering. Key Mars Magic (POST 3) in the win leg of your Pick 3 for Races 9-10, but use multiple horses underneath in trifectas. A trifecta box of Mars Magic (POST 3), Rethink (POST 8), Andiamo Ragazza (POST 1), and Saariselka (POST 5) covers the primary scenarios. Include Bette Davis Eyes (POST 6) in wider coverage for the trifecta given Drysdale's pedigree in this type of race.

RACE 10 — Post 8:35 — 1320f | T | S | Md Sp Wt | GON | Purse $65,000

The finale is a maiden special weight turf sprint at 6 furlongs for males. Ten entrants with Bob Baffert running two — Kelce (POST 4) at 8-1 and Mcgregor (POST 5) at 4-1. Legal Heir (POST 6) for Vann Belvoir and Kazushi Kimura opens at 3-1, while Diaghilev (POST 3) for Richard Mandella and Mike Smith draws 5-1 in what is a well-crafted nightcap.

Race 10

Pace Analysis

Mcgregor (POST 5) from the Baffert barn with Hernandez aboard figures as a potential frontrunner — Baffert's juveniles and lightly raced males often go directly to the lead, and Hernandez is comfortable in that role. Legal Heir (POST 6) with Kimura may press or stalk. Diaghilev (POST 3) with Smith will be given a patient, ground-saving ride — Mandella and Smith rarely rush their horses and will look to pounce in the final furlong. The pace should be brisk early in a six-furlong turf sprint with multiple Baffert runners likely pressing.

Key Contenders

Legal Heir (POST 6) at 3-1 for Vann Belvoir and Kimura is the morning-line second choice and deserves serious consideration as the top selection. Belvoir is a conditioner who has been quietly effective on the Southern California circuit, and Kimura is a natural turf jockey with excellent instincts at Santa Anita. Post 6 in a ten-horse turf sprint at six furlongs is acceptable — not ideal but workable. Legal Heir (POST 6) at 3-1 offers the best value among the top choices.

Mcgregor (POST 5) at 4-1 for Bob Baffert and Hernandez is the barn's higher-ranked runner and draws perfectly from post 5 in a six-furlong turf sprint. Baffert's horses in maiden turf sprints can be razor sharp on debut or early in their careers, and Hernandez's rail knowledge is unmatched. If Mcgregor (POST 5) fires his best effort, he could be a tough front-runner to catch on a firm course.

Diaghilev (POST 3) at 5-1 for Richard Mandella and Mike Smith is the most intriguing combination in the race. Mandella and Smith closing out a card on a turf sprint — with Smith given the ideal post-3 draw to save ground — is a genuine wagering angle. This is the type of race where the Hall of Fame trainer spots a well-bred maiden perfectly and sends him out to win. Diaghilev (POST 3) should not be left out of any exotic ticket.

Secondary Choices

Bright Eye Bungle (POST 9) at 5-1 for Philip D'Amato and Berrios rounds out D'Amato's day with a potentially live runner in the nightcap. D'Amato has been dominant on this card, and Bright Eye Bungle (POST 9) at 5-1 for the barn's closer-oriented style could hit the board in a wide-open maiden turf sprint. Kelce (POST 4) at 8-1 for Baffert and Geroux is the second Baffert entry — with Geroux aboard, the trainer clearly respects this runner. Baffert occasionally sends two legitimate horses at a maiden race, and Kelce (POST 4) with Geroux at 8-1 could easily be the barn's best on the day.

Longshots

Monumental (POST 1) at 12-1 for Richard Baltas and Pereira gets the rail but Baltas's record in maiden turf sprints has been inconsistent. Tiz All That (POST 7) at 12-1 for Baltas and Maldonado is the second Baltas entry. Fan Base (POST 10) at 10-1 for Tim Yakteen and Ayuso is the wide draw but Yakteen is capable of placing horses. Conquer We Must (POST 8) at 20-1 for Simon Callaghan and Fresu — Callaghan is a competent turf trainer and Fresu's presence means at least some trainer confidence is embedded. Bako Country (POST 2) at 15-1 for Carla Gaines and Jaramillo is Gaines's final runner of the day — she's had an active Saturday, and Bako Country (POST 2) could outperform a generous morning line if sharp.

Selections

Win: Legal Heir (POST 6) Place: Mcgregor (POST 5) Show: Diaghilev (POST 3)

Betting Strategy: The nightcap is worth a thoughtful investment to close out the day's wagering. Legal Heir (POST 6) at 3-1 is the win play. Use the exacta of Legal Heir (POST 6) over Mcgregor (POST 5) and Diaghilev (POST 3) as the primary tickets. The Mandella/Smith angle on Diaghilev (POST 3) makes him the most compelling trifecta piece in the field. A $1 trifecta box of Legal Heir (POST 6), Mcgregor (POST 5), Diaghilev (POST 3), and Kelce (POST 4) at reasonable cost could return a meaningful payout if the card closes with a bit of chaos.

Jockey Notes and Insights

Jaramillo is the busiest jockey on this card with mounts in Races 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10 — a truly demanding book that reflects his standing as one of the colony leaders at Santa Anita heading into the Hollywood Meet. He rides King Of Gosford (POST 3) in the Grade 3 American Stakes, which is the headline mount of his day, as well as the consensus Best Bet Irish Element (POST 2) in Race 8. His ability to navigate both turf routes and dirt sprints in a single afternoon-evening card is a testament to his versatility and current form.

Antonio Fresu has established himself as Philip D'Amato's preferred turf jockey for this meet, appearing on Iriseach (POST 1) in Race 3, Almendares (POST 5) in Race 7, Jacklyn Lucas (POST 1) in Race 5, and Rethink (POST 8) in Race 9. When a trainer consistently books the same rider across multiple races on the same card, it signals a high level of confidence in both horse and rider.

Mike Smith rides just twice — Sumter (POST 2) in Race 7 and Diaghilev (POST 3) in Race 10. That selectivity is meaningful. When a Hall of Fame jockey with Smith's resume takes a specific mount, particularly in a Grade 3 stakes and a maiden turf sprint, those rides carry disproportionate significance. The Mandella/Smith combination in turf routes at Santa Anita is historically one of the most reliable angles in California racing.

Florent Geroux rides three times — Holdthatrainbow (POST 2) in Race 1, Captain Choochies (POST 4) in Race 7, and Kelce (POST 4) in Race 10. His selection of the Baffert mount Kelce (POST 4) in the nightcap over other options is worth noting.

TC Baze has four mounts — Magic Carpet Ride (POST 5) in Race 5, Kambree's Flyer (POST 4) in Race 6, White Mountain (POST 9) in Race 8, and Shining River (POST 4) in Race 9. Baze's co-favorite call on White Mountain (POST 9) in Race 8 carries weight — a jockey of his experience doesn't accept co-favorite mounts in mile-long claiming races without genuine conviction.

Victor Espinoza rides Cody Boy (POST 4) in Race 2, Julia Street (POST 7) in Race 6, and Mars Magic (POST 3) in Race 9. His top selection of the day appears to be Mars Magic (POST 3) in Race 9, where the D. Wayne Baker connection has shown consistent turf results.

K.J. Desormeaux makes a single appearance on Shining River (POST 4) in Race 9. The Hall of Famer's appearance as a single-race rider at Santa Anita always generates attention, and his intimate knowledge of the Arcadia turf layout makes Shining River (POST 4) an interesting trifecta piece despite the 12-1 morning line.

Trainer Notes and Insights

Philip D'Amato is the dominant trainer story of this Saturday card. He saddles horses in Races 3, 5, 7, 9, and 10, controlling pace scenarios in the John Shear Lassie Stakes, the American Stakes, and the closing nightcap. D'Amato's record with turf fillies at Santa Anita is among the best in California, and the presence of King Of Gosford (POST 3) as his featured runner in the Grade 3 suggests the barn is operating at full capacity for the Hollywood Meet opener. That said, the D'Amato barn's effectiveness is spread across multiple races, which can dilute any individual horse's wagering appeal but increases the trainer's overall win total significantly.

Richard Mandella's two-horse entries in Race 7 — Sumter (POST 2) and Seal Team (POST 6) — and Race 10's Diaghilev (POST 3) with Mike Smith reflect a trainer who enters horses only when they're ready and placed correctly. The Sumter (POST 2) and Mike Smith pairing in the American Stakes is the most significant trainer-jockey angle on the card. Mandella's win percentage in graded stakes turf routes at Santa Anita is elite.

Steve Knapp is the most prolific trainer by number of starters on the card, appearing in Races 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8. While Knapp's horses don't always win at high prices, they are consistently placed in appropriate company and often hit the board. Handicappers should use Knapp horses broadly in exacta and trifecta coverage rather than as primary win selections.

Jeff Mullins, despite running only two horses in Race 2, exerts complete tactical control over that sprint through Liam Smith (POST 5) and Tessuto (POST 3). This dual-entry situation is common for Mullins when he's genuinely confident, and both horses deserve respect.

Bob Baffert's two-horse entry in Race 10 — Kelce (POST 4) and Mcgregor (POST 5) — is noteworthy. Baffert rarely enters horses in maiden turf sprints without strong evidence of grass readiness, and both draws are favorable. Baffert's mint condition at the start of a new Hollywood Meet is a well-documented angle — his horses frequently fire sharp in their first outings of a new meet.

Carla Gaines runs Holdthatrainbow (POST 2) in Race 1, Hot Day Girl (POST 9) in Race 5, Saariselka (POST 5) in Race 9, and Bako Country (POST 2) in Race 10 — a four-horse Saturday. Gaines has been a consistent conditioner on the Southern California circuit and her turf runners often outperform their morning-line odds.

Doug O'Neill saddles Won For Lou (POST 4) and Track Tiger (POST 5) in Race 3, Irish Element (POST 2) in Race 8, and Tequilaandtherapy (POST 9) in Race 9. The Best Bet designation for Irish Element (POST 2) reflects O'Neill's confidence in a horse he knows well, and his dual entry in Race 3 gives him significant race control in the John Shear Lassie.

Best Wagering Strategies and Value Plays

The Grade 3 American Stakes in Race 7 is the anchor race for exotic wagering structures on this card. Sumter (POST 2) at 2-1 with Mike Smith and Richard Mandella is the best single of the stakes races — when you can isolate a Mandella/Smith turf route at Santa Anita at 2-1, that is not a price to dismiss. The value enhancement comes from using Sumter (POST 2) in multi-race sequences where he can function as an anchor leg.

King Of Gosford (POST 3) at 4-1 is the value play of the day in the American Stakes. A Grade 1 winner returning from a layoff in a seven-horse Grade 3 field is exactly the type of situation that generates overlay opportunities. If King Of Gosford (POST 3) has shown sharp breezes heading into this return, the 4-1 morning line understates his winning probability.

Irish Element (POST 2) as the Best Bet of the card in Race 8 is the most reliable win selection for straight bettors. At 2-1, the monetary return is modest, but the confidence level is the highest of any horse on the card for handicappers who have identified this specific angle.

Legal Heir (POST 6) in Race 10 at 3-1 for the nightcap is the single best value win play on the card. A 3-1 morning-line horse with a favorable post in a maiden turf sprint where the competition includes debut or lightly raced entrants carries genuine upside, particularly if the Baffert runners steal some additional tote action and push Legal Heir (POST 6)'s actual odds above 3-1 at post time.

For the Pick 5, which likely spans Races 6 through 10, a structure that singles Irish Element (POST 2) in Race 8 and Sumter (POST 2) in Race 7 while spreading in Races 6, 9, and 10 provides the best balance of coverage and potential payout. In Race 6, use Twisted Humor (POST 1), Bitter Truth (POST 12), and Play For Me (POST 11). In Race 9, cover Mars Magic (POST 3), Rethink (POST 8), and Andiamo Ragazza (POST 1). In Race 10, use Legal Heir (POST 6), Mcgregor (POST 5), and Diaghilev (POST 3).

For the late Pick 3 covering Races 8-9-10, a $1 box or partial wheel using Irish Element (POST 2) / White Mountain (POST 9) in Race 8, Mars Magic (POST 3) / Rethink (POST 8) / Andiamo Ragazza (POST 1) in Race 9, and Legal Heir (POST 6) / Mcgregor (POST 5) / Diaghilev (POST 3) in Race 10 should be attainable at a $36-54 base cost and could return a meaningful multiple of that investment given the quality of the selections and the difficulty of the sequence.

The trifecta in Race 7 — the American Stakes — is the single highest-upside exotic on the card. Using Sumter (POST 2) on top with King Of Gosford (POST 3), Almendares (POST 5), and Seal Team (POST 6) underneath in any order could return $40-80 for a $1 trifecta depending on the actual final odds. Given that this is a seven-horse Grade 3 field, the trifecta is not a lottery ticket but a precision instrument — and the Mandella/D'Amato barn battle makes at least three of the seven horses legitimate threats to fill the exotic.
