Race Day Overview — Laurel Park, Friday, May 1, 2026

Laurel Park kicks off a consequential Kentucky Derby weekend on Friday afternoon before the National Thoroughbred League takes over the facility on Saturday, May 2, hosted by Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson. Friday's nine-race card is a solid regional program featuring a mix of maiden claimers on the turf and dirt, an open allowance at middle distance, and a pair of older horse claiming features that should draw solid fields. The Friday card serves as the appetizer before Saturday's NTL showcase, which means Friday's handle may be lighter than usual, a factor worth considering when evaluating probable morning line adjustments and late-money movement.

The card opens at noon with a maiden claiming turf sprint and builds toward a pair of $56,000 open claiming features in Races 7 and 8. The highest-class race of the afternoon is Race 6, an allowance at a mile and an eighth on the dirt carrying a $48,000 purse. Jamie Ness, who saddled Sunday co-feature winner Paco the Taco Man just five days ago, has multiple live runners entered today, and the connections around John J. Robb and Ferris Allen are also well-represented across the card.

The NTL news surrounding Saturday's event has generated buzz in the regional market, with the New York Knights looking to repeat their 2025 Maryland victory. That off-track storyline keeps the spotlight on Laurel this weekend, which should support attendance and handle levels despite divided attention.

Weather and Track Conditions — May 1, 2026

May 1 in central Maryland typically brings mild temperatures in the mid-to-upper 60s with a possibility of afternoon cloud cover. The region has experienced variable spring weather in late April, and the Laurel strip has seen some moisture this week. The turf course is expected to be rated good to firm, which is favorable for speed types on the front end. The main track is listed as fast and should hold through the early afternoon races barring any unexpected precipitation.

Track Bias and Post Position Analysis

Laurel's turf course historically favors horses that can settle in mid-pack or just off the pace, with closers benefiting from a genuine pace scenario. The inner turf course at Laurel runs 1,210 feet for most sprints and longer at route distances. Post position on the turf is meaningful, with inside draws being advantageous in shorter-field turf routes and middle posts being preferred in full fields. Post positions four through seven tend to benefit in full-field turf sprints.

On the main track, Laurel's dirt has historically been pace-favoring at sprint distances, rewarding horses that can stalk from second or third. The rail at Laurel has been shown to move over the course of a card as it wears, and the outside posts can become advantageous late in the afternoon as traffic patterns develop. For today's dirt routes, stalkers and mid-packers with late kicks should be prioritized over pure speed.

In maiden claiming turf routes like Race 1 and Race 3, post position matters significantly. The 1,210-furlong turf route is approximately a mile and a half, and horses breaking from double-digit posts in full fields like Race 3 face real challenges avoiding wide trips on the first turn.

RACE 1 — Post (12:00)/11:00/10:00/9:00 — 1210f | T | M | Md 16000 | BUM | Purse $24,000

Eight maidens go a mile and a half on the turf in this bottom-tier maiden claiming event restricted to fillies and mares. The field is manageable at eight, which helps neutralize post position concerns. The turf at this distance will test stamina, and horses with any prior route experience or turf breeding that suggests they can stay the trip should be preferred over one-dimensional speed types.

Race 1

Pace Analysis

With eight horses in a maiden turf route, the early pace is unlikely to be especially fast. Bellini Gold (2) is the morning line favorite and figures to control or sit close to the pace. Regal Flair (5) and Barbed Wire Barbie (7) both carry similar odds and may look to establish position early. The pace scenario should be honest enough to allow for a closer to get involved, but an uncontested leader could be tough on a turf course that currently plays fair to slightly favoring front-runners with early tactical speed.

Key Contenders

Bellini Gold (2) is the morning line favorite at 2-1 trained by Justin Nixon and ridden by Martina Rojas. Nixon is a regional trainer who has shown the ability to develop turf mares at the lower claiming levels, and Rojas has been productive at Laurel this spring. Bellini Gold (2) rates as the most likely winner based on her credentials and the morning line position. At a mile and a half, she needs to demonstrate she can stay the distance, but the connections clearly believe in her with this assignment.

Poney Island (1) breaks from the rail for trainer Gina Perri and jockey Carol Cedeno. Perri has two horses in this race, which suggests she is targeting this spot aggressively. Poney Island (1) at 4-1 from the rail on a turf route is an intriguing angle. If she can break alertly and establish position early, the inside draw becomes a tactical weapon at this distance. Perri's second entry, Fortune Garden (6) at 15-1, is a far longer price and serves more as a saver.

Secondary Choices

Regal Flair (5) for trainer John Robb at 5-1 with Xavier Perez in the irons is a legitimate contender. Robb is one of Laurel's more reliable trainers, and his horses typically run their race. Barbed Wire Barbie (7) trained by Mark Shuman at 5-1 with Yedsit Hazlewood up is another legitimate contender at fair odds. Hazlewood has been active at Laurel and deserves respect.

Longshots

Lucky Tin Tin (3) at 8-1 is trained by Ferris Allen, who has a solid record placing horses on the turf at Laurel. Yomar Ortiz is an experienced and capable rider who could navigate the traffic well from post three. Mendelssohn Adi (4) at 6-1 for Carlos Mancilla and Jose Vargas rounds out the lower-odds runners. Loaf Of Sof (8) at 6-1 for Brandon McFarlane and Matilda Burnham breaks from the outside and will need a honest pace to get involved. Fortune Garden (6) at 15-1 is the second Perri runner and can be dismissed unless live stable money appears.

Betting Strategy

This race sets up as a win single on Bellini Gold (2), with the option of using Poney Island (1) and Regal Flair (5) underneath in exacta and trifecta plays. The daily double with Race 2 is the primary exotic hook here, and using Bellini Gold (2) on top with multiple Race 2 horses is the recommended approach for value-seekers.

Selections

Win: Bellini Gold (2) Place: Poney Island (1) Show: Regal Flair (5)

RACE 2 — Post (12:35)/11:35/10:35/9:35 — 990f | D | S | Md Sp Wt | AOF | Purse $47,000

Six first-level maiden special weight fillies sprint six furlongs on the dirt in the richest maiden event of the early card at $47,000. These are better-bred lightly-raced or debut runners, and the fields at this level at Laurel tend to produce horses that develop into solid allowance types. This race carries the most significant class of the first half of the card and deserves close attention.

Race 2

Pace Analysis

With only six runners, pace will be crucial here. Engage At Will (1) for John Salzman and Jevian Toledo is one of two co-favorites at 2-1. Toledo is one of the most accomplished jockeys in the Mid-Atlantic and will look to establish or press the pace from the inside post. Costa Linda (4) for John Robb and Xavier Perez is the other 2-1 shot, and Robb horses at this level regularly hit the board. Both of these horses are capable of setting fractions. The pace scenario is likely to be moderately quick given two potential speed types, which could open the door for The Stork Club (5) to close.

Key Contenders

Engage At Will (1) with Jevian Toledo is a powerful combination. Salzman is a veteran regional trainer who consistently produces maidens ready to run first out or in their second and third starts, and Toledo's partnership with this stable has yielded results at this level. The inside post in a six-horse field is not a disadvantage, and Toledo's ability to get a horse out of the gate quickly is one of his calling cards.

Costa Linda (4) for John Robb at 2-1 with Xavier Perez is the main competition. Robb's barn is firing well this spring, with multiple horses on today's card reflecting his confidence in the current operation. Perez has been riding steadily at Laurel and should give Costa Linda (4) every opportunity to show her best.

Secondary Choices

The Stork Club (5) at 4-1 is the third Robb entry in this race, which is a significant trainer angle. Having two horses in a six-runner maiden sprint field suggests Robb is targeting this race confidently, and one of his pair should hit the board. Jeiron Barbosa picks up the mount on The Stork Club (5). Sweet Bourbon Tea (6) at 5-1 for Jose Corrales and Yedsit Hazlewood is another live contender. Corrales runs two horses in Race 2 and Race 6, and when his trainers double up, it often signals stable confidence.

Longshots

Rebelka (2) at 6-1 for James Chapman and Martina Rojas has some appeal at this price. Chapman is a low-profile trainer who occasionally surfaces a maiden at a healthy price. Legend's Girl (3) at 8-1 for Jose Corrales with Denis Araujo is the second Corrales runner in this spot. At 8-1 in a six-horse field, she represents some value if the pace collapses.

Betting Strategy

Engage At Will (1) and Costa Linda (4) are both legitimate win contenders at the same odds, creating a bridge exacta play that makes sense. Box these two in the exacta, and look to use The Stork Club (5) as the third leg of a trifecta. The daily double from Race 1 into Race 2 with Bellini Gold (2) over Engage At Will (1) / Costa Linda (4) is a reasonable two-ticket investment.

Selections

Win: Engage At Will (1) Place: Costa Linda (4) Show: The Stork Club (5)

RACE 3 — Post (1:07)/12:07/11:07/10:07 — 1210f | T | M | Md 16000 | BUN | Purse $24,000

Thirteen horses go a mile and a half on the turf in this maiden claiming event for males restricted to non-winners. A thirteen-horse turf route at this level is a complex betting race, and the wide-open morning line with multiple double-digit prices suggests a competitive group. Post position is critical in a field this size at a mile and a half, and inside-to-middle draws carry a significant advantage.

Race 3

Pace Analysis

Potcake (1) at 2-1 is the morning line favorite and breaks from the absolute inside. With a full field of thirteen, Potcake (1) is perfectly positioned tactically. Jevian Toledo is a masterful pace manipulator who can sit anywhere from on the lead to stalking. Gimme Two Shots (10) at 4-1 and Let Fly (8) at 6-1 are others who should figure early. The pace in this thirteen-horse field will sort itself out, but a competitive early tempo is expected given the number of horses involved.

Key Contenders

Potcake (1) is the standout top pick at 2-1 for trainer Sarah Nagle and Jevian Toledo. The rail draw in a turf route of this distance with a full field is a natural advantage, as horses can save ground through the entire trip. Toledo from the one post is a formidable combination, and Nagle's horses on the turf have shown solid recent form. At 2-1, Potcake (1) is deservingly favored, but the odds likely shorten further at post time.

Gimme Two Shots (10) at 4-1 for Emanuel Geralis and Carlos Eduardo Lopez is the top-priced alternative. At post ten in a thirteen-horse field, Gimme Two Shots (10) will need to work hard to avoid a wide trip, but the 4-1 morning line reflects legitimate underlying form. Lopez is a reliable journeyman who handles turf routes well.

Secondary Choices

Let Fly (8) at 6-1 for Ferris Allen and Martin Chuan is a horse to watch. Allen consistently places horses in competitive turf spots, and Let Fly (8) from post eight is a manageable draw. Gators Reign (12) at 8-1 for Anthony Aguirre and Julio Hernandez is an intriguing alternative. Royal Renegade (9) at 8-1 for Elizabeth Merryman and Taylor Kingsley is another in this tier. Merryman is a capable regional trainer who has handled turf maidens well.

Longshots

Tyrus (3) at 8-1 for Anthony Pecoraro and J.S. Rocco Jr. has a nice draw from post three and deserves mention as a potential live price runner. King Of Fog (2) at 15-1 for Michelle Castillo with Yedsit Hazlewood breaks from the inside portion of the field and could find a good spot. Gallo (11) at 15-1 for Joanne Shankle and Raul Mena is tough to dismiss entirely from mid-field. All Fruits Ripe (4) at 20-1 for Valrie Smith and Jean Gregor Briceno, Band Tour (13) at 20-1 for Elizabeth McCue and Xavier Perez from the outermost post, Free Costs To Much (5) at 30-1, Broadside Salvo (6) at 30-1, and Sir Lomax (7) at 30-1 all face uphill battles and can be used minimally if building large exotic tickets.

Betting Strategy

This is a trifecta and superfecta race. The key is using Potcake (1) on top with multiple combinations underneath. Gimme Two Shots (10), Let Fly (8), Tyrus (3), and Gators Reign (12) make logical fill-in horses. Avoid spreading too thin in a thirteen-horse field where the favorite from the rail is legitimately dangerous. A small win single on Potcake (1) combined with a multi-leg Pick 3 starting here is the recommended approach.

Selections

Win: Potcake (1) Place: Gimme Two Shots (10) Show: Let Fly (8)

RACE 4 — Post (1:39)/12:39/11:39/10:39 — 1320f | D | C | Clm 30000 | BUM | Purse $37,000

Six males go a mile on the dirt in a claiming race with a $30,000 tag. This is a tight, compact field where form can be properly analyzed and pace scenarios are clearly drawn. With only six runners, exacta boxing becomes manageable, and a confident play on the top selection is warranted.

Race 4

Pace Analysis

Spencerian (3) at 2-1 for Hugh McMahon and Yedsit Hazlewood co-favors with Shkhara Fire (5) at 2-1 for Brittany Russell and Sheldon Russell. Both are likely to be involved early. A two-horse pace battle through the first half-mile of a one-turn mile at Laurel can set up for closers, but in small fields, the better horse often just takes control and holds. Watch the first call fractions closely.

Key Contenders

Spencerian (3) at 2-1 for Hugh McMahon is one of the more reliable trainers in the Maryland region at this claiming level. McMahon regularly conditions horses to peak at the claiming mile, and Spencerian (3) with Yedsit Hazlewood has the tactical versatility to win from various positions. The three-post in a six-horse field is ideal.

Shkhara Fire (5) at 2-1 for Brittany Russell with Sheldon Russell riding represents the family training-and-riding combination, which can be a solid angle when the Russell team is confident in a horse's form. At co-favorite odds, Shkhara Fire (5) is the main threat to Spencerian (3).

Secondary Choices

Glows In The Dark (6) at 4-1 for Edward Allard with Forest Boyce is an intriguing closer angle. Allard has a solid record placing horses at the $30,000 claiming level, and if Spencerian (3) and Shkhara Fire (5) burn each other up, Glows In The Dark (6) could pounce late. Susan's Mule (1) at 5-1 for Carlos Mancilla and Jose Vargas and Tuned To The Moon (2) at 5-1 for Joanne Shankle and Christian Maldonado are secondary options with some upside if the pace collapses.

Longshots

Tipmanee (4) at 30-1 for Jose Corrales with Emanuel Rosario is a massive outlier in this otherwise competitive field. Without demonstrated recent form that supports this spot, Tipmanee (4) is a very deep longshot play only.

Betting Strategy

The two co-favorites set up an exacta play in both directions, with Glows In The Dark (6) as a key third wheel. An exacta box of Spencerian (3) and Shkhara Fire (5) with a Glows In The Dark (6) trifecta key underneath is the core structure. This is also a race where a mid-card single on Spencerian (3) or Shkhara Fire (5) could anchor a Pick 3 running through Races 4-5-6.

Selections

Win: Spencerian (3) Place: Shkhara Fire (5) Show: Glows In The Dark (6)

RACE 5 — Post (2:09)/1:09/12:09/11:09 — 1760f | T | C | Clm 16000n3l | BUM | Purse $24,000

Nine horses go an extended turf route of approximately eleven furlongs at the $16,000 claiming level restricted to non-winners of three lifetime. This is a long distance for the claiming level, and proven turf routers with recent fitness are at a premium. Jamie Ness, who won the co-feature at Laurel just five days ago with Paco the Taco Man, saddles the morning line favorite Cha Cha Chukka (2) here.

Race 5

Pace Analysis

Cha Cha Chukka (2) at 2-1 likely has the early tactical speed to control or press the pace at this extended route. Queen Rocket (4) at 4-1 could also factor prominently early. With nine horses going eleven furlongs on the turf, the pace scenario is unlikely to be overly fast, and horses with the ability to settle and produce a sustained late run should be preferred.

Key Contenders

Cha Cha Chukka (2) at 2-1 for Jamie Ness with Yedsit Hazlewood is coming off the barn's strong recent form, highlighted by Paco the Taco Man's stakes win last Sunday. Ness clearly has his horses sharp right now, and Cha Cha Chukka (2) is expected to be fit and ready. Hazlewood has been the go-to rider for the Ness barn at Laurel this spring.

Bella Estrela (5) at 3-1 for Keri Brion with Martin Chuan is the main price threat. Brion is one of the sharper claiming-level turf trainers in the region, and Bella Estrela (5) at 3-1 offers better value than the favorite. Brion also enters Bossy Jeans (3) at 8-1, suggesting she is targeting this race from multiple angles.

Secondary Choices

Queen Rocket (4) at 4-1 for Michael Aro with Angel Cruz is a live mid-price option. Miss Pierre (9) at 8-1 for Gina Perri with Carol Cedeno breaks from the outside but is trained by a conditioner who has demonstrated skill on the turf. Bossy Jeans (3) at 8-1 is the second Brion entry and could be a factor if the race sets up for a closer.

Longshots

Boys Go To Jupiter (1) at 12-1 for Kerry Hohlbein and Jose Vargas from the rail is worth a small mention. Hockey (7) at 12-1 for Sarah White and Raul Mena is another deep price. Hazelmoor Beach (6) at 20-1 for Joanne Shankle and D.E. Centeno and Impetus Echo (8) at 30-1 for Michael Jones Jr. and Denis Araujo are at the bottom of the price range and require exceptional circumstances to hit.

Betting Strategy

Cha Cha Chukka (2) is a strong win single candidate given the Ness barn's current form cycle. Using Cha Cha Chukka (2) on top in the Pick 3 from Races 5-6-7 is the key sequence of the afternoon. Bella Estrela (5) deserves exacta use beneath the favorite, and the Brion double at this level should be boxed in exotics.

Selections

Win: Cha Cha Chukka (2) Place: Bella Estrela (5) Show: Queen Rocket (4)

RACE 6 — Post (2:40)/1:40/12:40/11:40 — 1870f | D | A | Alw 48000b | BUN | Purse $48,000

Seven horses go approximately a mile and three-sixteenths on the dirt in the richest non-claiming race of the afternoon. This allowance event carries a $48,000 purse and draws a field with a notable morning line anomaly: Blue Kingdom (7) is listed at 0-1 on the morning line, indicating an error in the official race card — this horse would likely open as a prohibitive or extremely short favorite, suggesting outstanding current form. The Ness barn has Blue Kingdom (7) entered here with Yedsit Hazlewood, riding a hot streak aboard Ness horses.

Race 6

Pace Analysis

Tuff Luck (4) at 4-1 for Hugh McMahon and Jose Vargas and Dolice Vita (2) at 4-1 for Robin Graham with Forest Boyce are potential pace-setters. At a mile and three-sixteenths on the dirt, the pace will likely be moderate through the first half, and a quality stretch-runner could benefit. Blue Kingdom (7), depending on his running style, should be able to maneuver to any position Hazlewood desires.

Key Contenders

Blue Kingdom (7) for Jamie Ness at the listed 0-1 morning line odds is clearly the standout in this race. The 0-1 line is almost certainly an input or formatting error, but any horse entered in a seven-horse allowance field at a price suggesting near-lock status deserves enormous respect, particularly given the Ness barn's strong current form. Hazlewood riding for Ness is a reliable partnership today.

Dolice Vita (2) at 4-1 for Robin Graham with Forest Boyce is the most logical main rival. Graham is a competent regional trainer, and Dolice Vita (2) at this allowance class deserves consideration as the second choice.

Secondary Choices

Tuff Luck (4) at 4-1 for Hugh McMahon with Jose Vargas is another legitimate contender. McMahon has multiple live horses on today's card, and Tuff Luck (4) at mid-price in an allowance race fits the trainer's profile. Albert Finnigan (6) at 20-1 for Ferris Allen with Martin Chuan is a second Allen entry in this race, alongside Play It Cool (5) at 20-1. Allen running two horses at 20-1 in a seven-horse field suggests neither is a serious win threat.

Longshots

Tell 'em I'm Comin (1) at 30-1 for Jose Corrales with Matilda Burnham, No More Calls (3) at 20-1 for Charles Frock with Jean Gregor Briceno, Play It Cool (5) at 20-1, and Albert Finnigan (6) at 20-1 are all considered deep longshots in this field. The two Allen runners at 20-1 apiece are interesting as saver plays in trifecta structures if Blue Kingdom (7) faces any issues.

Betting Strategy

This race is nearly a single on Blue Kingdom (7). The appropriate play is using Blue Kingdom (7) as the banker in all multi-race wagers including the Pick 3, Pick 4, and Pick 5 sequences. In the exacta, Blue Kingdom (7) on top of Dolice Vita (2) and Tuff Luck (4) makes the most sense as a two-ticket structure. Do not overthink this race.

Selections

Win: Blue Kingdom (7) Place: Dolice Vita (2) Show: Tuff Luck (4)

RACE 7 — Post (3:08)/2:08/1:08/12:08 — 1210f | T | AO | OClm 55000b | BUN | Purse $56,000

Nine older horses go a mile and a half on the turf in a $55,000 open claiming event, one of the two featured claiming races of the afternoon. Where's Ray (8) is the commanding morning line choice at 1-1 for trainer John Salzman and Jevian Toledo, the same powerhouse combination that sends Engage At Will (1) in Race 2. This is the prime showcase of Salzman and Toledo's partnership today.

Race 7

Pace Analysis

Where's Ray (8) at 1-1 is likely to dictate or control the pace from post eight in a nine-horse turf route. Toledo from an outside draw on the turf will have the option to take back and settle or use early position, and in most scenarios at Laurel's turf course at this distance, Toledo will find the right position. Normandy Hero (3) at 4-1 for Jamie Ness with Hazlewood and Jean Valjean (4) at 5-1 for Elizabeth Merryman with H.A. Karamanos are others who could figure into the early pace picture.

Key Contenders

Where's Ray (8) at 1-1 is a standout. Salzman and Toledo are clearly the top combination at Laurel today, having already entered Engage At Will (1) in Race 2. The morning line chalk at 1-1 in a $56,000 turf route should be respected, though the odds invite a disciplined approach to wagering. Toledo's ability to save ground and find position in full turf fields is elite at the Mid-Atlantic level.

Normandy Hero (3) at 4-1 for Jamie Ness with Yedsit Hazlewood is the logical main threat. This is Hazlewood's third prominent Ness mount of the day, and the consistency of this partnership makes Normandy Hero (3) a serious contender. Ness has the barn running well, and a 4-1 price against a 1-1 shot suggests this horse must show something to overcome the betting crowd's preference.

Secondary Choices

Jean Valjean (4) at 5-1 for Elizabeth Merryman with H.A. Karamanos is a legitimate alternative. Merryman's horses have shown consistent turf form at Laurel, and Karamanos is an experienced jockey in this region. Prince Of Jericho (1) at 6-1 for Brittany Russell with Sheldon Russell is the family combination seen in Race 4 as well, and they may fire again from the inside post.

Longshots

Gold Trust (6) at 6-1 for Mike Dini with Julio Hernandez is an interesting deeper price. Tidewater (9) at 15-1 for Anthony Aguirre Jr. with Jeiron Barbosa breaks from the outside. Talented Man (2) at 20-1 for Michael Moore with D.E. Centeno and Incinerator (5) at 20-1 for Jose Magana with Ismerio Villalobos are deep longshots. Studlydoright (7) at 30-1 for John Robb with Xavier Perez is the extreme price in this field and can be dismissed.

Betting Strategy

Where's Ray (8) is the race's banker, but at 1-1, the win return is modest. The optimal plays are exacta and trifecta structures with Where's Ray (8) on top and Normandy Hero (3), Jean Valjean (4), and Prince Of Jericho (1) filling the underneath slots. Using Where's Ray (8) in the Pick 3 with Race 8 and Race 9 is the key late-card sequence.

Selections

Win: Where's Ray (8) Place: Normandy Hero (3) Show: Jean Valjean (4)

RACE 8 — Post (3:39)/2:39/1:39/12:39 — 1320f | D | AO | OClm 55000b | BUN | Purse $56,000

Five older horses go a mile on the dirt in the companion claiming feature to Race 7. Haileysfirstnotion (1) at 1-1 for trainer Gary Capuano and Jose Vargas is another short-priced morning line favorite, and Capuano has Intrepid's Legacy (5) in the same race at 4-1, giving his stable two entries in a five-horse field. Capuano is one of the more established conditioning operations in Maryland, and double entries in a small field typically signal stable confidence in at least one of the pair.

Race 8

Pace Analysis

Haileysfirstnotion (1) at 1-1 from the inside post in a five-horse dirt mile is perfectly positioned. The inside draw on the dirt at Laurel is a tactical advantage at a mile, and Vargas will likely establish early position without much pressure. No Easy Days (2) at 4-1 with Jevian Toledo could apply early pace pressure, which makes the fractions interesting in this small field. Capuano's second entry Intrepid's Legacy (5) at 4-1 gives the barn coverage.

Key Contenders

Haileysfirstnotion (1) at 1-1 is the clear class of the field based on the betting line. Capuano is a proven trainer at this level, and Vargas has been riding live horses on today's card. From the inside post with a clear pace scenario, Haileysfirstnotion (1) is a difficult horse to beat.

No Easy Days (2) at 4-1 for Michael Moore with Jevian Toledo is the most dangerous opponent. Toledo rides two horses on the late card today, and his association with this runner adds credibility. If Haileysfirstnotion (1) has any chink in the armor, No Easy Days (2) is the most likely beneficiary.

Secondary Choices

Howgreatisnate (4) at 4-1 for Andrew Simoff with Julio Hernandez is another legitimate mid-price contender in this compact field. At equal odds to No Easy Days (2), Howgreatisnate (4) presents an interesting alternative if Simoff has the horse cranked up for this spot. Intrepid's Legacy (5) at 4-1 for Capuano with Yedsit Hazlewood is the second stable entry and deserves attention. Capuano running a second horse in a five-horse field is a meaningful angle.

Longshots

Don't Wait Up (3) at 12-1 for Gina Perri with Matilda Burnham is the outlier price in this otherwise competitive field. A 12-1 morning line price in a five-horse field is substantial, and Don't Wait Up (3) would need a major underperformance by the favorites to hit.

Betting Strategy

Haileysfirstnotion (1) is a bankable single in multi-race sequences. The Pick 3 from Races 7-8-9 using Where's Ray (8) over Haileysfirstnotion (1) over multiple Race 9 horses is the prime wager of the late card. In the exacta, Haileysfirstnotion (1) on top of No Easy Days (2) and Howgreatisnate (4) covers the most likely exacta outcomes.

Selections

Win: Haileysfirstnotion (1) Place: No Easy Days (2) Show: Howgreatisnate (4)

RACE 9 — Post (4:09)/3:09/2:09/1:09 — 1320f | D | M | Md 12500 | BOF | Purse $22,000

Seven fillies and mares close out the Friday card in a bottom-level maiden claimer at the $12,500 tag on the dirt sprint. This is the cheapest race on the card by claiming value, and the morning line reflects a fairly competitive field with Hotter Than Fire (7) for Jamie Ness at 2-1 as the clear favorite.

Race 9

Pace Analysis

Hotter Than Fire (7) from the outside post at 2-1 with Yedsit Hazlewood will need to maneuver to a good spot early. In a seven-horse maiden claimer, pace is usually moderate, and the rail can wear out by the closing races of the day. Ness will have his horse in the right position, and Hazlewood's experience managing pace from an outside post is proven.

Key Contenders

Hotter Than Fire (7) at 2-1 for Jamie Ness completes what could be a significant four-race day for the barn if Cha Cha Chukka (2) in Race 5, Blue Kingdom (7) in Race 6, and Normandy Hero (3) in Race 7 all run to form. Ness is clearly the trainer of the day at Laurel, and Hotter Than Fire (7) is expected to run well in the card's finale. Yedsit Hazlewood gets the call here as well.

Elite Miss (2) at 4-1 for James Chapman with Jeiron Barbosa and Kelsey Hill Girl (5) at 4-1 for Emanuel Geralis with Jevian Toledo are the co-second choices on the morning line. Toledo picking up Kelsey Hill Girl (5) is a significant jockey angle for a closing race where the leading rider is looking for a winner.

Secondary Choices

Fastfeld (3) at 6-1 for Linda Albert with Tais Lyapustina and Fredericka's Rose (6) at 6-1 for Jose Corrales with Emanuel Rosario are mid-price options in this bottom-level claimer. Fredericka's Rose (6) as a second Corrales runner on the card warrants a look.

Longshots

I'mamaterialgirl (4) at 8-1 for Jose Corrales with Jean Gregor Briceno is the third Corrales horse on today's card, and while 8-1 in a maiden claimer is not an extreme price, CORRALES running three horses in one day is worth noting. I'm A Lil Wicked (1) at 10-1 for Annette Eubanks with Jose Vargas closes out the field at the longest available price in this race.

Betting Strategy

Hotter Than Fire (7) is the natural single to close the card and anchor the Pick 3 from Races 7-8-9. Box Hotter Than Fire (7), Elite Miss (2), and Kelsey Hill Girl (5) in the exacta to cover the most likely outcomes. This is also a logical race to use multiple horses in the finale leg of any Pick 4 or Pick 5 sequences.

Selections

Win: Hotter Than Fire (7) Place: Kelsey Hill Girl (5) Show: Elite Miss (2)

Jockey Notes and Insights

Jevian Toledo is the marquee rider on today's card, with significant mounts in Race 2 on Engage At Will (1), Race 3 on Potcake (1), Race 7 on Where's Ray (8), Race 8 on No Easy Days (2), and Race 9 on Kelsey Hill Girl (5). Toledo is one of the top jockeys in the Mid-Atlantic region and his five-mount card today represents some of the most important horses at Laurel. His 1-1 partner in Race 7, Where's Ray (8), is the second short-priced single of the day involving his name.

Yedsit Hazlewood has arguably the most active book on the card with mounts across multiple races including Cha Cha Chukka (2) in Race 5, Blue Kingdom (7) in Race 6, Normandy Hero (3) in Race 7, Intrepid's Legacy (5) in Race 8, and Hotter Than Fire (7) in Race 9. Hazlewood's alignment with the Ness barn throughout the afternoon creates a consistent theme: if the Ness horses run to form, Hazlewood will have an outstanding day.

Jose Vargas has a full book including Mendelssohn Adi (4) in Race 1, Susan's Mule (1) in Race 4, Boys Go To Jupiter (1) in Race 5, Tuff Luck (4) in Race 6, Haileysfirstnotion (1) in Race 8, and I'm A Lil Wicked (1) in Race 9. His association with Haileysfirstnotion (1) and Tuff Luck (4) gives him live horses in two of the afternoon's three most competitive fields.

H.A. Karamanos picks up Play It Cool (5) in Race 6 and Jean Valjean (4) in Race 7. His Race 7 mount is the more attractive opportunity at 5-1 in the open claimer.

Trainer Notes and Insights

Jamie Ness is clearly the trainer of the day, entering Cha Cha Chukka (2) in Race 5, Blue Kingdom (7) in Race 6, Normandy Hero (3) in Race 7, and Hotter Than Fire (7) in Race 9. His stable won the Sunday allowance co-feature just five days ago with Paco the Taco Man, confirming the barn is in excellent form. The Ness-Hazlewood combination is dominant across this card.

John Robb has three horses on the card including Regal Flair (5) in Race 1, Costa Linda (4) and The Stork Club (5) in Race 2, and Studlydoright (7) in Race 7. His double-entry in Race 2 in a six-horse maiden sprint is a particularly sharp maneuver, and at least one of his two Race 2 runners should hit the board.

Jose Corrales has multiple entries across the card including Legend's Girl (3) and Sweet Bourbon Tea (6) in Race 2, Tell 'em I'm Comin (1) in Race 6, Tipmanee (4) in Race 4, Fredericka's Rose (6) in Race 9, and I'mamaterialgirl (4) in Race 9. The volume of Corrales horses entered today without a single short-priced runner suggests he is casting a wide net rather than targeting a specific spot.

Ferris Allen saddles Lucky Tin Tin (3) in Race 1, Let Fly (8) in Race 3, and Play It Cool (5) and Albert Finnigan (6) in Race 6. Allen's turf runners deserve attention, particularly Let Fly (8) at 6-1 in Race 3.

Gary Capuano enters two horses in the five-horse Race 8 field: Haileysfirstnotion (1) and Intrepid's Legacy (5). Capuano double-entries are always worth analyzing, as the stable typically has one runner as the primary and one as coverage.

John Salzman sends Where's Ray (8) in Race 7 and Engage At Will (1) in Race 2 — both are morning line favorites. A trainer going 2-for-2 on morning line chalk is notable, and Salzman connecting with Toledo on both horses is the signature stable-jockey partnership of the afternoon.

Best Wagering Strategies and Value Plays

The Pick 5 at Laurel typically begins in the mid-card and runs through the final five races. If the late Pick 5 spans Races 5 through 9, the optimal structure is as follows:

Race 9: HOTTER THAN FIRE (7), KELSEY HILL GIRL (5), ELITE MISS (2)

Using Blue Kingdom (7) and Where's Ray (8) as consecutive singles in the middle legs significantly reduces ticket cost while maintaining strong coverage in the two winnable legs. A two-leg single structure within a five-leg exotic is aggressive, and the payoff for connecting will be meaningful.

The Pick 3 from Races 7 through 9 using Where's Ray (8) / Normandy Hero (3) over Haileysfirstnotion (1) / No Easy Days (2) over Hotter Than Fire (7) / Kelsey Hill Girl (5) is the best value sequence of the afternoon. Limiting Race 8 to two horses and Race 9 to two horses while using two Race 7 horses keeps the ticket cost manageable while covering a variety of outcomes.

The best individual value play of the card is Bella Estrela (5) at 3-1 in Race 5. Keri Brion is a sharp turf trainer, the horse has an intriguing post and pace position, and the Ness favorite Cha Cha Chukka (2) will absorb the majority of the public action, creating overlay potential on the second choice.

The early daily double in Races 1 and 2 offers moderate value. Bellini Gold (2) / Engage At Will (1) and Bellini Gold (2) / Costa Linda (4) are the two recommended combinations, with an optional add of Poney Island (1) in Race 1 for a broader ticket.

For single-race exotic focus, Race 3 with thirteen runners provides the largest potential trifecta and superfecta payouts. Using Potcake (1) on top with Gimme Two Shots (10), Let Fly (8), Tyrus (3), Gators Reign (12), and Royal Renegade (9) filling the underneath positions creates a manageable superfecta structure with solid payout potential in a wide-open thirteen-horse turf route.
