Pick Pony Track Condition Report — Hawthorne Race Course, May 14, 2026

Track Surface & Bias

With a typical mid‑May Chicago weather pattern and no recent prolonged soaking, the Hawthorne dirt (D) is expected to play fair-to-mildly quick, favoring forwardly placed runners who can secure position into the first turn. Historically, inside-to-middle posts (1–6) on the main track perform best at standard route distances, with early speed and pace-pressers holding a slight edge, while deep closers generally need an honest or contested pace to be most effective. In sprints, the rail can be good but not overwhelmingly dominant; horses breaking cleanly and staying within a couple lengths of the lead tend to have the most success.

The turf course (T), assuming it remains on the grass, should play on the firm-to-good side this time of year, tilting slightly toward stalkers and mid‑pack runners who can make a sustained run in the lane rather than extreme front-end types. Outside and mid-gate posts are generally more comfortable at 7½F and up, allowing horses to find rhythm and avoid traffic on the first bend, while rail draws can be advantageous only if the rider is intent on holding position early. Late-running closers can certainly get involved on the Hawthorne turf, but they are most effective when there is genuine pace pressure up front and the course is not overly firm and speed‑favoring.

Handicapper’s Edge

Given these expected profiles, prioritize horses with tactical speed on dirt who have shown the ability to sit just off the pace and finish, especially from inside-to-middle posts. On turf, upgrade stalkers and versatile runners drawn away from the extreme inside, and be cautious about leaning too heavily on one-dimensional closers unless the pace scenario clearly projects multiple committed speeds.
