Race Day Overview — Lethbridge, May 17, 2026

Lethbridge Raceway kicks off its 2026 spring meet with a seven-race Sunday card that showcases a mix of maiden special weights, allowance events, and a diverse collection of local and regional talent. The card spans conditions that will test everything from unraced horses finding their footing for the first time to seasoned claimers stepping up in class. With purses ranging from $6,800 to $7,800, the afternoon represents a solid mid-tier Alberta racing program that rewards careful handicapping.

Six of the seven races are contested at 1210 furlongs, with the opener going at the shorter 1100 furlong sprint distance. Five of the seven races are coded BUN, meaning non-winners-of conditions apply on the allowance side, while two carry the BUM designation indicating maiden or prior condition restrictions. The track surface is listed as dirt for all races.

Trainer Colten Mead is the barn to watch today, saddling horses in five of the seven races and fielding multiple entries in Races 1 and 5. Lyle Magnuson is similarly active, entering horses in Races 3, 4, 5, and 6. These two operations dominate the card numerically and their activity patterns deserve close attention throughout the afternoon. Jim DePew also has entries spread across three races. On the jockey side, Garfield Gordon and Larris Allen figure to be the two most active riders, both picking up mounts across the majority of the card.

Weather and Track Conditions — Lethbridge, May 17, 2026

The forecast for Sunday, May 17 calls for mostly sunny skies with afternoon temperatures climbing into the mid-teens Celsius range, roughly 14 to 16 degrees by post time for the early races warming slightly through the afternoon card. Wind is expected out of the west-northwest at 20 to 30 kilometers per hour with occasional gusts, which is typical for this corridor and can play a minor role in pace dynamics on an oval of this size.

No meaningful precipitation is anticipated heading into race day, and the track maintenance crew at Lethbridge is expected to have the surface harrowed and in fast condition. Lethbridge's dirt surface tends to dry quickly in these spring conditions given the low humidity typical of the region. The rail is expected to be placed at its standard position, and with fair weather and a dry surface, fast times throughout the afternoon card are a reasonable expectation.

Track Bias and Post Position Analysis — Lethbridge

Lethbridge Raceway is a half-mile oval, and like most tracks of this circumference, pace and post position play significant roles in race outcomes. The tight turns favor horses that can establish early position cleanly without burning excessive energy, and rail-running types who can secure the fence on the first turn have a measurable advantage in most sprint configurations.

At the 1210 furlong distance, which dominates today's card, posts one through three carry a meaningful advantage historically. Horses breaking from the inside can angle to the rail through the first turn and then save substantial ground on the final bend. Outside posts at a half-mile track require wider paths and more ground loss, which is amplified when a field has multiple front-runners pressing the pace.

The 1100 furlong distance in Race 1 is even more compacted, and early speed from a favorable post is at a premium. At this short sprint, posts on the outside require a horse to either show immediate tactical speed or be spotted enough early position to compensate for the ground differential.

In fast track conditions, the rail at Lethbridge tends to hold up well, and horses that can press or secure the early lead without dueling tend to perform well. Closers at this track are at a disadvantage unless the pace truly collapses, which is relatively uncommon at the half-mile configuration. Plan your pace scenarios with these factors firmly in mind for each race on today's card.

RACE 1 — Post 12:15 — 1100f | D | S | Md Sp Wt | BUN | Purse $6,800

This opener is a maiden special weight sprint at the abbreviated 1100 furlong distance, which means a relatively short run to the first turn and a premium on horses that break sharply. With six horses going postward, the field size is manageable, but the unknown nature of first-time starters and inexperienced maidens makes this race as much an art as a science. The morning line favors Woodrow Call (3) at 1-1, making this effectively a one-horse race on paper, but at Lethbridge on opening day, those odds invite scrutiny.

Race 1

Pace Analysis

Force Of Fire (6) and Woodrow Call (3) both project as early speed horses based on their morning line positioning and connections. With a short run to the first bend, if these two engage in a speed duel, the pace scenario could collapse the field and allow a presser or closer to pick up the pieces. Ramblin Riggs (1) from the rail should be in a position to stalk just off the pace and benefit from any pace pressure. Lovely John (2) and Italian Griz (5) figure to be mid-pack types without the natural early foot to threaten the leaders off the turn.

Key Contenders

Woodrow Call (3) is the morning line favorite at 1-1, trained by Floyd Buffalo, a smaller regional operation that will have this horse pointed specifically for this spot. When a horse like this is sent off at even money on a maiden special weight card at a half-mile oval, the barn typically has something to back it up. Woodrow Call (3) breaks from post 3, an ideal middle post at this sprint distance that avoids the traffic risk of the rail while not surrendering ground to outside posts. Jockey Orlando Foster has the assignment, and Foster is an experienced hand on this circuit who can find the right position early. The combination of trainer confidence and favorable post makes Woodrow Call (3) the clear top selection.

Force Of Fire (6) is the other main contender at 2-1 odds, also trained by Colten Mead, who has Judges Empire (4) in the same race. Mead's dual entry is worth noting as a barn that believes it has competitive horses in both. Force Of Fire (6) from post 6 will need to be hustled early to avoid being wide around the first turn, and at 1100 furlongs, that energy expenditure matters. Gilberto Santos takes the mount. If Santos can get Force Of Fire (6) to settle cleanly and avoid a speed battle with Woodrow Call (3), this horse could be the most dangerous threat to the favorite.

Ramblin Riggs (1) at 3-1 with trainer Laura Conway and jockey Ryan Nelson from the rail is a legitimate contender. Nelson is a capable jockey on this circuit and the inside post at 1100 furlongs is genuinely advantageous. If Ramblin Riggs (1) breaks cleanly and can draft off the speed, this horse could be sitting in a beautiful stalking spot turning for home. Conway's barn has a history of pointing horses well at Lethbridge, and a 3-1 maiden on the rail deserves respect.

Secondary Choices

Judges Empire (4) at 5-1 is the second Mead entry, handled by Garfield Gordon from post 4. Gordon is one of the more active riders on today's card and will have his legs under him early in the day. In a maiden race where pace scenarios are difficult to project with precision, the 5-1 quote on a horse from a barn that clearly believes in its stock warrants inclusion in exotics. However, the outside post relative to stablemate Force Of Fire (6) and the morning line gap suggest Mead's primary focus is on the 2-1 horse.

Italian Griz (5) at 6-1 with Larris Allen up for Lyle Magnuson is intriguing given Magnuson's dominance across this card. However, five maiden horses at 1100 furlongs with no past performances to anchor a pace projection makes Italian Griz (5) a speculative inclusion at best. Allen is an active rider today and will be conserving energy for bigger opportunities later in the card. The 6-1 price needs some performance to justify wagering in the win pool.

Longshots

Lovely John (2) at 7-1 trained by Travis Robson with Juan Apango aboard is the longest price in the field. In maiden company at this level and distance, 7-1 is the kind of price that makes exotics attractive if the horse shows early foot and can find daylight along the rail. Apango has experience at this circuit, and post 2 is workable at 1100 furlongs. However, without a compelling track or workout angle to justify a win bet, Lovely John (2) is best used as a bottom portion of a superfecta or exacta saver.

Betting Strategy

This is a race where the public will likely hammer Woodrow Call (3) down below its morning line. Ramblin Riggs (1) at 3-1 offers the best value in the win pool given the rail advantage and a capable jockey in Nelson. In the exacta, Woodrow Call (3) and Ramblin Riggs (1) back and forth makes sense. A trifecta key using Woodrow Call (3) on top with Ramblin Riggs (1) and Force Of Fire (6) below is the recommended structure.

Selections

Win: Woodrow Call (3) Place: Ramblin Riggs (1) Show: Force Of Fire (6)

Race 2 is an allowance event at 1210 furlongs with a BUM condition designation, meaning the field has faced some prior restrictions typical of maiden or limited winners conditions. Five horses contest this spot, making pace projections and contender analysis more tractable. The co-morning line favorites are BE AWARE (3) and KULSUM (4), both at 2-1, setting up what looks like a competitive dual between two evenly matched horses.

Pace Analysis

With five horses and two probable front-runners in the mix, the pace scenario at 1210 furlongs is manageable. Sizzlin Rose (2) at 3-1 could push the pace early, and if that horse presses either of the favorites, the resulting speed duel could set up the closers. Rebate (1) from the rail at 6-1 and Ready To Orbit (5) at 5-1 are the horses most likely to benefit from a contested early pace. At 1210 furlongs on a tight half-mile track, anything more than a moderate pace can exhaust front-runners on the final turn.

Key Contenders

Be Aware (3) at 2-1 is trained by Jim DePew, who has multiple entries today and is clearly a trainer pointing horses to this meet with purpose. Larris Allen gets the mount, and Allen is among the busiest riders today. Post 3 is advantageous at this distance, allowing the horse to settle in behind early speed and make a forward move when the field strings out. DePew's horses in allowance company tend to be fit and well-prepped, and Be Aware (3) is the horse to beat based on conditions and positioning.

Kulsum (4) at 2-1 is trained by Clinton Rycroft with Garfield Gordon aboard. Rycroft is a competent regional conditioner, and Gordon's book today reflects a busy day. The matching morning line odds with Be Aware (3) suggest the oddsmakers see these two as equally matched, which makes the exacta between them the logical structural bet. Post 4 at 1210 furlongs is slightly less favorable than post 3 but still workable on a half-mile oval.

Secondary Choices

Sizzlin Rose (2) at 3-1 trained by Garry Marks with T.W. Simpson in the irons comes from a barn with local knowledge at Lethbridge. From post 2, Sizzlin Rose (2) can press the early pace or sit close to the leaders and strike. If the co-favorites are locked in a duel, Simpson is experienced enough to steer Sizzlin Rose (2) into a pocket and rally when needed. At 3-1, this is a legitimate upset candidate worth including in all exotics.

Ready To Orbit (5) at 5-1 trained by Bob Gwilliam with Blandford Stewart getting the call is a horse that could benefit from pressing speed up front. From post 5, this horse will need to overcome the outside post disadvantage at a half-mile track, but if the pace collapses, Ready To Orbit (5) has the profile to slide past tiring leaders. At 5-1, there is some wagering value here, particularly in exotics as a closer type.

Longshots

Rebate (1) at 6-1 trained by Daniel Oberholtzer with J.O. Rocha in the saddle from the rail has the most favorable post in the field in terms of ground-saving. Rocha is a capable jockey, and at 6-1 in a five-horse field, Rebate (1) offers value if the pace collapses or if the rail is playing favorably. This is a horse to use underneath in exactas and trifectas rather than as a straight win bet.

Betting Strategy

The co-favorite structure at 2-1 makes the win pool crowded at the top. The best value is using Sizzlin Rose (2) as an upset in exotics or keying Be Aware (3) over Sizzlin Rose (2) and Kulsum (4) in the exacta. A trifecta wheel using Be Aware (3) on top with Kulsum (4) and Sizzlin Rose (2) below covers the most likely outcomes.

Selections

Win: Be Aware (3) Place: Kulsum (4) Show: Sizzlin Rose (2)

RACE 3 — Post 1:05 — 1210f | D | A | Alw 7800nc | BUN | Purse $7,800

This is one of the more interesting races on the card. The BUN designation means non-winners-of conditions, and the $7,800 purse is among the richer offerings today. The morning line is dominated by Momo's Kiddo (3) at 0-1, an extraordinarily short price that suggests either an error in the morning line or a horse that is considered so far superior to its competition that it warrants near-prohibitive favoritism. Trainer Lyle Magnuson saddles two horses in this race, Momo's Kiddo (3) and Christine's Jack (4), giving the barn full coverage of the likely top half of the wagering.

Race 3

Pace Analysis

With Momo's Kiddo (3) at 0-1, the pace scenario matters less for win purposes and more for exacta construction. Amusing Way (5) at 2-1 should press or stalk the favorite, and that dynamic makes the early fractions worth monitoring. Zone Control (1) and Delta Delta (2) may attempt to set the pace, which could create a contested early sequence that helps any horse with a late kick. At 1210 furlongs, a horse this dominant on paper should have enough left to handle any pace scenario.

Key Contenders

Momo's Kiddo (3) at 0-1 is clearly the overwhelming public choice and morning line hammer. Trained by Lyle Magnuson with Larris Allen aboard, the combination is the most active trainer-jockey pairing on the card today. A 0-1 morning line on a horse at any level of racing represents near-certainty in the morning line maker's assessment. The win bet holds almost no value at these odds, but the horse cannot be dismissed from any exotic structure. Post 3 is ideal at 1210 furlongs, and Allen's ability to get the horse settled and in rhythm should not be an issue.

Amusing Way (5) at 2-1 is trained by Chandra Clarke with Andre Powell in the irons from post 5. This is the most logical horse to beat the favorite and at 2-1 represents a substantially better wagering proposition than Momo's Kiddo (3). Clarke is a capable conditioner on the Alberta circuit, and Powell is a solid jockey who will be motivated by a live mount against a heavily favored rival. If Momo's Kiddo (3) has any vulnerability, Amusing Way (5) is the horse best positioned to exploit it.

Secondary Choices

Christine's Jack (4) at 5-1 is Magnuson's second entry trained to give the barn a two-pronged attack on the exacta. Garfield Gordon has the assignment, and Gordon will likely be given instructions to cover ground and finish cleanly. In exacta terms, Momo's Kiddo (3) over Christine's Jack (4) is the barn's preferred outcome. The 5-1 quote on a second Magnuson entry in a small field is worth including in the exacta underneath the favorite.

Longshots

Zone Control (1) at 6-1 trained by Kaylon Calfrobe with T.W. Simpson aboard from the rail is a pace-setter type who could get loose on the lead if the field respects the favorite early. From post 1, Simpson can send Zone Control (1) to the front immediately and dictate terms. At 6-1, the potential for a long lead is enough to use this horse as a longshot in trifectas.

Delta Delta (2) at 8-1 trained by Shainell Birdrattler with Ryan Nelson up is the deepest price in the field. Nelson is capable of a surprise effort from a horse this deep in the morning line, and at 8-1, the trifecta inclusion is justified. However, a win wager on Delta Delta (2) would require significant reason to believe the field's dominant horse is significantly compromised.

Betting Strategy

This race is primarily an exacta and trifecta race. With Momo's Kiddo (3) near prohibitive odds, the value is in the exacta boxing Amusing Way (5) and Christine's Jack (4) to fill second behind the favorite. A trifecta using Momo's Kiddo (3) on top, Amusing Way (5) second, and Christine's Jack (4) or Zone Control (1) third is the recommended wager. If Momo's Kiddo (3) runs as expected, the payouts from these structures could still return reasonable value.

Selections

Win: Momo's Kiddo (3) Place: Amusing Way (5) Show: Christine's Jack (4)

Race 4 is a full seven-horse allowance field at 1210 furlongs, which is the most competitive-looking race on the early portion of the card. Three horses share 2-1 co-favorite billing in the morning line: CHEROKEE WILL (2), HOLY MOSES (4), and VOGUE JOKER (6). With this kind of co-favorite clustering, the win pool is fractured and there is genuine value to be found among the secondary horses. This race rewards careful pace analysis and trainer-jockey angle work.

Pace Analysis

Seven horses at 1210 furlongs at Lethbridge creates real pace scenario complexity. With multiple horses likely wanting early position, including Cherokee Will (2) and possibly Cape Forest (5), the early fractions could be contested. Definitely Italian (3) from post 3 with Orlando Foster could also press the pace. If the early speed battles through the first turn, Holy Moses (4) and Vogue Joker (6) may benefit from a ground-saving stalking position. Dermot's Dilemma (7) from the outside post is the most likely closer in the field and will need the pace to be genuine to rally from the extreme outside.

Key Contenders

Cherokee Will (2) at 2-1 is trained by Lloyd Weeseekase and has O'Shane Nugent in the irons from post 2. This is a favorable post at 1210 furlongs, and Nugent is experienced at this level. Weeseekase has been a consistent presence on the Lethbridge circuit, and at 2-1, Cherokee Will (2) is expected to be forwardly placed and hold a comfortable position through the first turn.

Holy Moses (4) at 2-1 is saddled by Laura Conway with Ryan Nelson up. Conway and Nelson have a productive working relationship that has produced results at this track in prior meets. Post 4 at 1210 furlongs requires some navigation on the first turn, but Nelson's experience allows him to find clean running lanes. If the pace is genuine, Holy Moses (4) should be hitting stride turning for home.

Vogue Joker (6) at 2-1 trained by Macynne Packham with J.O. Rocha aboard from post 6 gives the field yet another co-favorite from an outside post. The outside post is not ideal on a half-mile oval, but Rocha is adept at saving ground and avoiding early trouble. Vogue Joker (6) from a Packham barn represents a horse that has been prepared for this specific spot, and the 2-1 morning line suggests confidence from the oddsmakers.

Secondary Choices

Cape Forest (5) at 3-1 trained by Roy Romanow with Juan Apango in the saddle is the most interesting secondary selection in this field. At 3-1, this horse offers better value than any of the co-favorites if pace scenarios break correctly. Apango is a versatile rider who can adapt his strategy based on what develops early, and Cape Forest (5) from post 5 is workable. Romanow's barn tends to run honest horses, and 3-1 in a race with three 2-1 horses creates genuine win pool value.

Eddy Bear (1) at 6-1 trained by Jim DePew with Blandford Stewart from the rail is a horse with a live inside post. DePew has been active today with multiple entries, and Eddy Bear (1) from the rail at 6-1 could steal a piece of this if the pace collapses in front of it. Stewart is capable of rating a horse and finding daylight, and at 6-1, the trifecta inclusion is justified.

Longshots

Definitely Italian (3) at 6-1 trained by Colten Mead with Orlando Foster has the active Mead barn behind it, which is never easy to dismiss. Foster will look for early position from post 3 and try to secure a clean stalking trip. In a race with three co-favorites, a 6-1 Mead horse with Foster up is the type of longshot that can create superfecta value.

Dermot's Dilemma (7) at 8-1 trained by Tessa Davis with Garfield Gordon from the extreme outside post is the longest price in the field. At a half-mile track from post 7, this horse needs everything to go right: a contested pace, clean passage around both turns, and a late run. Gordon is skilled enough to navigate the outside, but the post position disadvantage is real. Best used in superfectas for deep value.

Betting Strategy

With three co-favorites at 2-1, the win pool is likely to produce unexciting returns on whichever co-favorite wins. The best strategy is to use Cape Forest (5) as the key value play in exactas, particularly in exactas keyed over and under the co-favorites. A trifecta structure using any two of the three co-favorites on top with Cape Forest (5) and Eddy Bear (1) in the bottom is recommended. The wide-open nature of this race also makes a small superfecta box using Cherokee Will (2), Holy Moses (4), Vogue Joker (6), and Cape Forest (5) worth considering.

Selections

Win: Cherokee Will (2) Place: Cape Forest (5) Show: Holy Moses (4)

Race 5 is a non-winners-of allowance at the top purse level on today’s card at $7,800. The five-horse field features another Magnuson dual entry with SABURO’S GRACE (3) and CANDY’S WILDCAT (4). The co-favorites are IMMELMANN (2) at 2-1, CANDY’S WILDCAT (4) at 2-1, and KARAOKE (5) at 2-1, while SABURO’S GRACE (3) is listed at 5-1 and WICKEDBLACKBULLET (1) is the longshot at 6-1.

Pace Analysis

With five horses and multiple potential pace-setters, the early fractions at 1210 furlongs will be telling. Wickedblackbullet (1) from the rail could make an early move to establish position, and Immelmann (2) with Foster aboard has the tactical speed to press. If these two engage in the early going, the stalkers Candy's Wildcat (4) and Karaoke (5) are positioned to benefit. Saburo's Grace (3) with Garfield Gordon may be the pace-compromiser that falls between speed and closer.

Key Contenders

Immelmann (2) at 2-1 is another Colten Mead horse, this one piloted by Orlando Foster from post 2. The Mead-Foster combination has shown productivity across today's card, and from post 2, Immelmann (2) is in an excellent tactical position to either press the pace or settle immediately behind early speed. Mead's horses have been highlighted as key contenders in multiple races today, and the 2-1 morning line reflects genuine confidence.

Candy's Wildcat (4) at 2-1 trained by Magnuson with Larris Allen up is the Magnuson top horse in this race. With Momo's Kiddo (3) likely to be the barn's big winner in Race 3, Candy's Wildcat (4) here at $7,800 non-winners conditions is the afternoon continuation of Magnuson's strategy. Allen knows how to handle Magnuson horses and will look to maximize a ground-saving trip from post 4.

Karaoke (5) at 2-1 trained by Cindy Cummins with Blandford Stewart from post 5 is the outside co-favorite in what amounts to a three-way pick among the public. Cummins is a capable trainer at this level, and Karaoke (5) from post 5 will require good race management. Stewart has the experience to compensate for the post disadvantage with tactical positioning, and a horse given co-favorite billing by the morning line maker deserves full attention.

Secondary Choices

Saburo's Grace (3) at 5-1 is the second Magnuson entry, handled by Garfield Gordon from post 3. Gordon and Magnuson's working relationship across today's card gives Saburo's Grace (3) a competent handler. At 5-1 relative to stablemate Candy's Wildcat (4) at 2-1, the barn is clearly pointing to the latter, but in exactas and trifectas, Saburo's Grace (3) is worth including underneath Candy's Wildcat (4) as a barn one-two.

Longshots

Wickedblackbullet (1) at 6-1 trained by Kaylon Calfrobe with Andre Powell from the rail is the deepest price in this five-horse field. The rail at Lethbridge is advantageous in sprint conditions, and Powell is a rider who understands pace dynamics. At 6-1 in a five-horse field where the public has split evenly among three horses, Wickedblackbullet (1) represents value if it can get early position cleanly. A win ticket at 6-1 alongside exacta inclusions is not unreasonable.

Betting Strategy

The three-way co-favorite structure at 2-1 depresses the win pool value across the board. The best play here is using Wickedblackbullet (1) as an upset in exactas with any of the three favorites, particularly Immelmann (2) and Candy's Wildcat (4). A trifecta key using Immelmann (2) on top with Candy's Wildcat (4), Karaoke (5), and Wickedblackbullet (1) below offers coverage. If Magnuson believes in both horses, the barnmate exacta using Candy's Wildcat (4) over Saburo's Grace (3) could also pay nicely.

Selections

Win: Immelmann (2) Place: Candy's Wildcat (4) Show: Wickedblackbullet (1)

RACE 6 — Post 2:20 — 1210f | D | A | Alw 7800nc | BUM | Purse $7,800

The card closer is also at $7,800 and carries the BUM designation, meaning the conditions restrict on prior eligibility similar to maiden or limited winners status. Seven horses enter this race, making it the most complex handicapping puzzle of the afternoon. Night Flyer (2) is the morning line favorite at 1-1, another Colten Mead horse with Orlando Foster riding, making this Mead's fourth primary contender across the card. Jacrodra's Devil (4) at 2-1 is the likely second choice, trained by Magnuson with Larris Allen.

Race 6

Pace Analysis

Seven horses at 1210 furlongs in a BUM allowance creates a varied pace scenario. Night Flyer (2) with Foster will likely look for early position, and R B's Tiger (1) from the rail could attempt to lead. If Night Flyer (2) and R B's Tiger (1) engage through the first turn, the midfield horses Stratogale (5) and Jacrodra's Devil (4) could have ideal stalking trips. Thunder Kin (7) from post 7 is the most likely late runner and would need a genuine pace collapse to be a factor.

Key Contenders

Night Flyer (2) at 1-1 is the Mead-Foster combination continuing what has been an active afternoon for both connections. From post 2, Foster can get Night Flyer (2) to the front or just off the pace immediately, and the inside post position at a half-mile oval is an asset. Mead's barn has been sending horses with confidence throughout this card, and Night Flyer (2) at 1-1 is the culmination of that confidence for the finale. However, at 1-1 in a seven-horse field, the value is minimal in the win pool.

Jacrodra's Devil (4) at 2-1 trained by Magnuson with Allen is the principal challenger. Magnuson and Allen have been the most active trainer-jockey tandem today, and heading into the final race with a 2-1 shot says the barn has genuine confidence here. Post 4 is manageable at 1210 furlongs, and Allen will look to find a comfortable position tracking the early speed. If Night Flyer (2) gets any kind of cover up front, Jacrodra's Devil (4) could swoop past in the final turn.

Secondary Choices

Stratogale (5) at 3-1 trained by Jim DePew with T.W. Simpson aboard from post 5 is a well-connected entry. DePew has been consistent today across multiple races, and Simpson is a capable jockey who handles the 1210 furlong distance well. At 3-1 with solid trainer-jockey credentials, Stratogale (5) is the value play in this race if the public hammers Night Flyer (2) below its morning line. A win bet on Stratogale (5) at these odds is defensible.

Lady Yellowstone (6) at 6-1 trained by Krista Shearer with Blandford Stewart from post 6 is worth noting. Stewart has been active across the card and will be looking to finish the day on a positive note. At 6-1 in a field where the favorite is at 1-1, there is structural value in using Lady Yellowstone (6) in exactas and trifectas as a pace-compromiser who could slide into the frame.

Longshots

R B's Tiger (1) at 5-1 trained by Gail McConaghie with Dwight Anthony Lewis from the rail is a horse with genuine post position advantage. Lewis is not among the busiest riders today, but the rail post at Lethbridge can compensate for a modest booking. At 5-1 from the rail, R B's Tiger (1) is worth a small win ticket and trifecta inclusion.

Jasmine Chieftain (3) at 10-1 trained by Shawn Calfrobe with J.O. Rocha from post 3 is the deepest price in the field. Rocha has had multiple mounts today and will be motivated to end the card on a high note. At 10-1, Jasmine Chieftain (3) is purely a superfecta or tri saver.

Thunder Kin (7) at 8-1 trained by Chandra Clarke with Andre Powell from the extreme outside is Powell's final ride of the afternoon. The outside post in a seven-horse field at a half-mile track is the least favorable position on the card, and Thunder Kin (7) needs a contested pace and a wide trip to have any chance. The 8-1 price makes it a superfecta inclusion at most.

Betting Strategy

Night Flyer (2) is the logical single in any multi-race structure, but at 1-1 it delivers no win pool value. The best approach is using Stratogale (5) as a value play to beat the favorite, with exactas focusing on Night Flyer (2) over Jacrodra's Devil (4) and Stratogale (5), plus Jacrodra's Devil (4) over Stratogale (5) as a backup. A trifecta key using Night Flyer (2) on top with Jacrodra's Devil (4), Stratogale (5), and R B's Tiger (1) below covers the most likely finishing order.

Selections

Win: Night Flyer (2) Place: Stratogale (5) Show: Jacrodra's Devil (4)

Jockey Notes and Insights

Garfield Gordon is the busiest jockey on today's card, with mounts in Races 1 through 6. Gordon's broad booking reflects the trust multiple barns have placed in him, and his ability to maintain focus and energy through a seven-race afternoon will be tested. He picks up the Mead second entry in Race 1, the Rycroft horse in Race 2, the second Magnuson entry in Race 3, the longshot in Race 4, and the second Magnuson horse in Race 5. His busiest race for win probability is likely Race 3 with Christine's Jack (4) behind the barn's dominant favorite.

Larris Allen is similarly active, appearing in Races 1 through 6 for multiple trainers. Allen's key opportunities come aboard Magnuson horses Momo's Kiddo (3) in Race 3, Candy's Wildcat (4) in Race 5, and Jacrodra's Devil (4) in Race 6. If Magnuson's barn is as sharp as their booking suggests, Allen could be the leading jockey at the end of this card.

Orlando Foster picks up the Mead top horses in Races 1, 4, 5, and 6. The Mead-Foster combination across Woodrow Call (3) in Race 1, Definitely Italian (3) in Race 4, Immelmann (2) in Race 5, and Night Flyer (2) in Race 6 makes Foster the rider to watch as a conduit for Mead's barn performance. Foster is an experienced hand who communicates well with his horses in sprint conditions.

Ryan Nelson has a lighter book today but rides for two of the stronger connections on the card in Laura Conway and Shainell Birdrattler. His most important mount is Holy Moses (4) in Race 4 for Conway.

Blandford Stewart rides across multiple races including Eddy Bear (1) in Race 4, Karaoke (5) in Race 5, and Lady Yellowstone (6) in Race 6. Stewart has a workmanlike approach and handles outside posts with patience.

Andre Powell is aboard Wickedblackbullet (1) in Race 5 and Thunder Kin (7) in Race 6, both from difficult outside or rail posts. Powell's ability to establish early position will determine much of the outcome for these mounts.

Juan Apango rides Lovely John (2) in Race 1 and Cape Forest (5) in Race 4. The Race 4 mount at 3-1 is his best winning opportunity of the day.

Trainer Notes and Insights

Colten Mead is the trainer of the afternoon, entering horses in five of seven races. His stable sends Woodrow Call (3) in Race 1, Judges Empire (4) and Force Of Fire (6) in Race 1, Be Aware (3) is not a Mead horse — Mead's key runners are Force Of Fire (6) and Woodrow Call (3) in Race 1, Definitely Italian (3) in Race 4, Immelmann (2) in Race 5, and Night Flyer (2) in Race 6. The breadth of Mead's presence on this card suggests an active, healthy stable that arrived at this meet in good condition. When a trainer saddles multiple horses across a card of this size at a smaller track, they typically have targeted race conditions with precision.

Lyle Magnuson rivals Mead in activity, entering horses in Races 3, 4, 5, and 6. His dual entries in Race 3 and Race 5 are noteworthy. In Race 3, Momo's Kiddo (3) at 0-1 is clearly the barn's showcase horse. In Race 5, Candy's Wildcat (4) at 2-1 is preferred over Saburo's Grace (3) at 5-1 based on the morning line. Magnuson's strategy of filing two entries in select races ensures the barn collects exacta money regardless of which horse finishes second, which is a calculated approach for smaller tracks where exacta pools can be meaningful relative to the purse.

Jim DePew runs three horses today: Be Aware (3) in Race 2, Eddy Bear (1) in Race 4, and Stratogale (5) in Race 6. DePew is a consistent regional trainer who rarely ships horses without believing they are competitive, and the three-race presence today reflects a stable that is pointed and ready.

Laura Conway saddles Ramblin Riggs (1) in Race 1 and Holy Moses (4) in Race 4. Conway's partnership with Ryan Nelson across both races gives the barn a consistent communication channel, and both horses have strong post positions.

Kaylon Calfrobe entries include Zone Control (1) in Race 3 and Wickedblackbullet (1) in Race 5. The rail assignments for both horses are the best post position available, giving Calfrobe a track advantage in both races. If the rail is playing well on Sunday, both horses could outrun their morning lines.

Best Wagering Strategies and Value Plays

The most important overarching theme on this card is the dominance of the Mead and Magnuson barns. Any multi-race wager should account for these stables' depth. Both barns have horses well-placed to win multiple races, and using them as singles in select legs of multi-race exotics is the logical starting point.

Pick 4 Strategy covering Races 3 through 6:

Race 6 completes with NIGHT FLYER (2) and STRATOGALE (5) as a two-horse coverage.

A base ticket structure of 1 x 3 x 2 x 2 produces 12 combinations. At $1 per combination this is a $12 base ticket, which is scalable to $2 per combination for a $24 investment.

Exacta Value Plays:

Race 1 — WOODROW CALL (3) over RAMBLIN RIGGS (1) and FORCE OF FIRE (6)

Race 2 — BE AWARE (3) over KULSUM (4) and SIZZLIN ROSE (2)

Race 4 — CAPE FOREST (5) over CHEROKEE WILL (2) and HOLY MOSES (4), priced at 3-1 with genuine upset potential

Race 6 — STRATOGALE (5) over NIGHT FLYER (2) as a value reversal if STRATOGALE (5) outperforms

The best single win bet of the card is Ramblin Riggs (1) in Race 1 at 3-1. The rail advantage at 1100 furlongs, the capable jockey in Nelson, and the Conway barn's track knowledge all support the contention that this horse is underlay relative to Woodrow Call (3). If Woodrow Call (3) sets or presses the pace hard, Ramblin Riggs (1) rates as the most dangerous closer in the field at a price.

Stratogale (5) in Race 6 at 3-1 is the second-best value play on the card. DePew's barn has been quietly consistent today, and with Night Flyer (2) likely to be hammered below its 1-1 morning line by post time, Stratogale (5) could return 4-1 or better in the win pool.

Cape Forest (5) at 3-1 in Race 4 is the value play in a race with three co-favorites. In a wide-open allowance where the public divides its money three ways, a legitimate 3-1 contender with a capable rider in Apango and a solid regional trainer in Romanow can deliver meaningful exacta and trifecta value.

The Pick 7 or Pick All across today's full card would optimally single Momo's Kiddo (3) in Race 3 and Night Flyer (2) in Race 6, spreading in the remaining legs to create a cost-effective structure. Given the card's short-priced favorites in multiple legs, the Pick 4 covering Races 3 through 6 remains the best risk-reward structure for serious horseplayers attending Lethbridge on May 17.
