Pick Pony Track Condition Report — Santa Anita Park, May 25, 2026

Track Surface & Bias

Santa Anita's main dirt (D) typically plays fair to slightly speed-favoring when dry and well-harrowed, with a mild edge to forwardly placed runners who can secure position early and stay out of kickback. Inside to middle posts tend to be optimal in sprints, while route races often see tactical speed from posts 3–7 enjoy the cleanest trips into the first turn. On the turf (T), the layout generally rewards stalkers and mid-pack runners who can quicken turning for home, with outside lanes (3–5 off the rail) often proving best in the stretch, especially in races at a mile and beyond.

Given the recent Santa Anita pattern late in the meet, turf rails are often moved out, which can tighten inside paths and subtly favor horses with tactical speed and the ability to secure a tracking position just off the pace. Deep closers on both surfaces may need an above-average early tempo to be fully effective, as moderate fractions can leave them with too much to do late.

Handicapper’s Edge

When evaluating contenders on the dirt, upgrade horses with tactical speed who draw inside to middle gates, especially in sprints, and be cautious about deep closers unless projected pace pressure appears strong. On the turf, give extra credit to runners capable of settling mid-pack and producing a controlled, sustained run rather than relying on one big late burst from far back. Trip efficiency and posts that allow a smooth run into the first turn should be key factors in your wagering decisions today.
