Pick Pony Track Condition Report — Hawthorne Race Course, June 4, 2026
Track Surface & Bias
Hawthorne's dirt (D) surface typically plays as a fair to mildly speed-favoring strip, with a slight edge to inside and middle posts at common sprint and mile distances under standard conditions. In recent meet results, early pace types and forwardly placed stalkers have held a consistent advantage, especially in lower-level claiming and allowance races where late kicks are less decisive.
On the turf (T) course, Hawthorne traditionally shows a more position-and-trip oriented bias, with stalkers and mid-pack runners in the two- to four-path often enjoying the best of it once the ground firms up. Wide, deep-closing moves can win but generally require an above-average pace collapse; conversely, loose lone speed on the turf is dangerous when fractions are moderate, particularly in smaller fields.
Handicapper’s Edge
Given Hawthorne's usual pro-speed lean on the dirt, prioritize runners with tactical speed who can secure position early without being need-the-lead types, and downgrade deep closers who require perfect pace setups. On turf, focus on horses drawn well enough to secure ground-saving stalking trips, and give extra credit to runners with proven Hawthorne turf form and strong late pace figures that can capitalize when the front end softens late.
