Pick Pony Track Condition Report — Hawthorne Race Course, June 21, 2026

Track Surface & Bias

Hawthorne's dirt (D) track historically plays as a fair-to-mildly speed-favoring surface, especially at common sprint distances from 4½f to 6f, where inside posts and horses with early tactical speed or clear front-running ability tend to perform well. Routes on dirt often give a better chance to stalkers sitting just off the pace, with deep closers needing an honest or contested early tempo to fully factor. The turf (T) course at Hawthorne is typically more neutral to slightly favoring stalkers and mid-pack runners, with post position less critical than trip and finishing kick, though saving ground on the turns remains an advantage in larger fields.

Given the current meet pattern and the mix of short dirt sprints and longer races on both dirt and turf, expect forwardly placed runners to hold a mild edge on dirt, while turf events should continue to reward horses who can secure position, relax early, and finish strongly without having to circle too wide.

Handicapper’s Edge

Under these conditions, upgrade horses with positional speed on dirt, especially those drawn inside or with the versatility to sit just behind the leaders rather than needing to rally from far back. On turf, prioritize runners with proven ability to finish strongly off a stalking trip, and be cautious about overcommitting to pure front-runners unless they appear lone speed or figure to control a modest pace.
