Race Day Overview — Assiniboia Downs, August 25, 2026

Assiniboia Downs kicks off another Monday evening card in Winnipeg, Manitoba, with seven races spread across sprint and route distances on the main dirt track. The card opens at 8:30 PM ET (local post at 6:30 PM CT) and features conditions ranging from a competitive allowance sprint to open claimers and a featured $25,000 Plentiful stakes in Race 6. The deepest purse on the card sits at $25,000 for that stakes event, while the low end of the purse structure bottoms out at $10,100 for the $5,000 claimer in the nightcap. This is a typical late-summer Assiniboia program, with the track running its compressed schedule through the final weeks of the 2026 meet.

The card features a blend of familiar local faces and horses that have been cycling through the claiming ranks at the prairie oval. Trainer Jerry Gourneau is particularly active this evening, entering horses in Races 5, 6, and 7, giving him significant presence across the back half of the card. Jockey Kerron Khelawan draws multiple mounts and figures to be a major factor throughout the evening. The Jason Homer barn is also prominent, with entries in three of the first four races.

No significant scratches or late changes have been reported ahead of first post, and the card appears to be running as originally drawn. With seven full fields in play and exotic wagers cycling from the opener, this is a workable card for handicappers who focus on the local circuit.

Weather and Track Conditions

Winnipeg is experiencing a warm late-August pattern, with temperatures at post time expected to be in the upper 20s Celsius (low-to-mid 80s Fahrenheit), with moderate humidity consistent with regional norms for this time of year. No significant rainfall is anticipated in the hours leading up to the evening's races, which means the main dirt track at Assiniboia should be listed at fast or near-fast. The track has been playing consistent over recent cards, and the maintenance crew has kept the surface in good shape through the heat of the summer meet. Bettors should expect standard fast-track conditions barring any late-afternoon pop-up shower, which is possible but not forecasted. Wind should be light and not a significant factor for the sprints.

If the track comes up fast, front-runners and pace-pressers have been doing well at Assiniboia this meet, and that tendency should inform pace analysis throughout the evening.

Track Bias and Post Position Analysis

Assiniboia Downs is a five-eighths-mile oval, compact and tight with relatively short runs to the first turn. That configuration consistently rewards horses that can secure early position, and the inside posts have historically carried a meaningful advantage in sprints, particularly at the 1210f and 1320f distances where horses are immediately negotiating the first bend. Rail-drawn horses that can break cleanly and grab position tend to avoid traffic trouble in the early going.

At the longer distances — 1650f, 1760f, and especially 1870f — the inside post advantage diminishes somewhat, as the extra ground gives horses more time to settle into their spots. However, on a dry, fast track, pace-setters at Assiniboia still hold a meaningful edge because the short stretch limits come-from-behind moves. Closers need a genuine hot pace to fire, and in small fields, that pace rarely develops.

For tonight's card, horses in posts one through three at sprint distances warrant extra attention. At the route and middle distances, posts four through six are competitive and should not be faded on post position alone. Given the compact nature of the oval, gate speed and early foot are premium commodities regardless of distance.

RACE 1 — Post 8:30/(7:30)/6:30/5:30 — 1320f | D | A | Alw 19500n2l | BUM | Purse $19,500

This opening-night allowance sprint tests fillies and mares that have not won two lifetime races, making it a condition that typically draws sharp horses looking to punch their ticket to unrestricted company. Five mares face the starter at a mile and five-eighths — correction, this is 1320 furlongs, which at Assiniboia is a one-turn sprint of approximately six and a half furlongs, though the track's furlong notation should be read as yards in the Manitoba convention, translating to a standard six-furlong-equivalent sprint. The five-horse field keeps exactas and trifectas manageable, and with two morning-line co-favorites, the race sets up as a binary confrontation with overlay potential underneath.

Pace Analysis

With Lisa Connects (5) and Zibibbo (4) sharing the 2-1 line, pace will be the critical determining factor. My Kinda Delite (2) is likely to be involved early given her connections and post, while Misspennymischief (3) may offer a stalking trip from mid-pack. The pace scenario leans toward a reasonably honest early fraction, but in a five-horse field, the front runner who can control a moderate tempo is dangerous. If Lisa Connects (5) and Zibibbo (4) engage early, that could set up for the horse that relaxes best in the stalking spot.

Key Contenders

Zibibbo (4) trained by Carl Anderson and ridden by Rashawn Brewster draws the critical inside portion of the field and is the horse to beat at 2-1 on the morning line. Carl Anderson is one of the more reliable trainers at this meet and consistently spots horses where they belong. Brewster has been a competent presence at the Downs and will likely take advantage of the favorable post to secure early position and dictate from the front or just behind the leader. The non-winners of two lifetime condition suits horses that have broken their maiden but haven't advanced, and Zibibbo (4) appears to fit this spot cleanly.

Lisa Connects (5) is the other 2-1 co-favorite, trained by Jason Homer and ridden by Tyrone Nelson. Homer's stable has been in good form this meet, and putting two horses in the same race — Misspennymischief (3) and Lisa Connects (5) — signals confidence in both. Lisa Connects (5) draws the outside post in a five-horse field, which is manageable in a sprint, and Nelson is a dependable pilot for this level. If Homer's barn is leaning toward one of the two, the morning line makes them equal, meaning bettors will need to sort out the pace preference.

Secondary Choices

My Kinda Delite (2) at 3-1 trained by J. Douglas Mustard and ridden by Rachaad Knights represents good secondary value. The 3-1 morning line suggests this filly has credentials that deserve respect. Knights is one of the sharper young riders at the meet, and the two post is favorable for a horse that wants to press or stalk the early leaders. If the co-favorites take each other on early, My Kinda Delite (2) is ideally positioned to benefit from a ground-saving trip.

Misspennymischief (3) at 5-1 is the other Homer runner, piloted by Neville Stephenson. With Homer saddling two horses in this spot, Misspennymischief (3) may get a generous trip if Lisa Connects (5) is the intended barn weapon. Stephenson is the meet's most experienced jockey and won't waste a trip, but barn dynamics in multi-entry situations always carry some uncertainty.

Longshots

Boujee Britches (1) at 10-1 trained by Wendy Anderson and ridden by Kerron Khelawan draws the rail, which is a gift in a sprint at Assiniboia. At double digits on the morning line, she's clearly facing a step up in class or a pattern that has not impressed the linemaker. However, the rail post and Khelawan's strong meet statistics make this horse a marginal trifecta inclusion at the price.

Selections

Win: Zibibbo (4) Place: My Kinda Delite (2) Show: Lisa Connects (5)

Betting Strategy: The 2-1 co-favorites make the win pool relatively unattractive for value. The better play is an exacta box of Zibibbo (4) and My Kinda Delite (2) or a trifecta key using Zibibbo (4) on top with My Kinda Delite (2) and Lisa Connects (5) underneath. If the morning line holds, the exacta Zibibbo (4) over My Kinda Delite (2) could return a modest but fair price. Include Boujee Britches (1) at the bottom of trifectas for minimal cost given the favorable post.

RACE 2 — Post 9:00/(8:00)/7:00/6:00 — 1650f | D | C | Clm 7500 | BUN | Purse $15,000

The second race is a route-distance claiming event for non-winners, stretching out to 1650 furlongs at the $7,500 claiming level. Six horses contest this spot, which is a common overnight claiming condition at Assiniboia. The presence of a morning-line favorite at even money makes this race a dangerous one for exacta bettors looking to key a single horse.

Pace Analysis

Lab Rat (3) at 1-1 is likely to attract plenty of early backers and will shape the entire pace scenario regardless of where this horse sits. If Lab Rat (3) is a front-runner type, the pace could compress quickly against a modest field. Hey Big Un (1) at 2-1 figures to be the primary threat and will likely press or stalk the favorite. The Ronald (4) from the Homer barn adds another dimension from a route-distance perspective. With six horses at a middle distance, pace should be honest but not brutal, giving pace-pressers an advantage.

Key Contenders

Lab Rat (3) trained by Jared Brown and ridden by Kerron Khelawan is the even-money choice and enters as the clearcut public choice. Brown has been effective this meet, and pairing with Khelawan — who is riding with excellent consistency — makes this entry particularly dangerous. At 1650f, Khelawan can rate a horse effectively, and if Lab Rat (3) has the class and form to justify the favoritism, he's a sound single in multi-race wagers.

Hey Big Un (1) at 2-1 trained by Carl Anderson and ridden by Larry Munoz draws the inside post at the route distance, which is a significant advantage at Assiniboia. Anderson's barn has been competitive throughout the meet, and the rail at 1650f allows Munoz to save ground through every turn. This horse is the main threat to the favorite and deserves strong consideration for exacta use.

Secondary Choices

The Ronald (4) at 3-1 from the Jason Homer stable and ridden by Neville Stephenson rounds out the logical contenders. Homer has been placing horses well this meet, and The Ronald (4) has a realistic chance to sit a stalking trip and outrun the morning-line choices down the lane. Stephenson's experience at the route is a definite asset, and the 3-1 price represents fair value if the top two are shorter on the board.

Longshots

Green Amazon (6) at 8-1 trained by Steven Gaskin and ridden by Javaniel R. Patterson is the best longshot option in the race. The outside post is workable at the route distance, and if the pace develops hotly up front, Patterson could find a closing opportunity for this Gaskin-trained mare. A small investment on Green Amazon (6) in trifectas is reasonable at 8-1.

Master Of Disguise (2) at 10-1 trained by Fred Rawson and ridden by Antonio Whitehall gets a tough draw at the second post in a route, and the morning-line odds suggest a horse that hasn't done much to distinguish itself. Rawson is a limited presence at the meet. Include modestly in trifecta structures only.

Happy Camper (5) at 15-1 trained by Ryan Desjarlais and ridden by Sven Balroop is the longest shot in the field. Desjarlais occasionally produces live horses from off-the-radar, but the morning line reflects a horse that is likely well out of its depth here. Throw in superfectas only.

Selections

Win: Lab Rat (3) Place: Hey Big Un (1) Show: The Ronald (4)

Betting Strategy: The even-money favorite makes win wagering on Lab Rat (3) unattractive from a value standpoint. The best play is a straight exacta of Lab Rat (3) over Hey Big Un (1) or a reverse. If the two favorites run 1-2 in either order, the exacta return at even money and 2-1 prices will be modest but reliable. For trifecta plays, use Lab Rat (3) and Hey Big Un (1) on top with The Ronald (4) and Green Amazon (6) underneath to capture some exotics value.

RACE 3 — Post 9:25/(8:25)/7:25/6:25 — 1210f | D | C | Clm 7500 | BUM | Purse $15,000

The third race is a short sprint for fillies and mares at the $7,500 claiming level. Six mares go to the gate at 1210f, which at Assiniboia is essentially a straight-line sprint with minimal time for pace to evolve. Gate speed and early foot are absolutely paramount here, and post position matters enormously at this distance.

Pace Analysis

This figures to be a speed-favoring race from the drop of the gate. With multiple speed types drawn across the field, the first three furlongs will determine the outcome. Mystic Song (2) and Queen Of Attitude (3) are co-2-1 favorites, and both are likely to be in early contention. At 1210f, a horse that can get to the lead cleanly and not be pressured will be very difficult to catch. The race could come down to which of the front-runners can clear the field first without burning excessive energy.

Key Contenders

Mystic Song (2) at 2-1 trained by Carl Anderson and ridden by Christopher Roy Mamdeen draws the two post, which is prime position at this sprint distance. Anderson's barn continues to fire at a high clip, and Mamdeen is a capable rider who understands the nuances of the short sprint at the local track. This filly is well-placed in the two hole and should save ground while remaining close to the early pace.

Queen Of Attitude (3) at 2-1 trained by Robert Maybin and ridden by Javaniel R. Patterson is the barn companion to Arikara (1), with Maybin sending out two mares in this spot. Queen Of Attitude (3) from the three post has an excellent tactical position at this sprint distance and Patterson has the experience to exploit a soft pace scenario if it develops. The dual Maybin entry creates some interpretation challenges, but both mares deserve respect at 2-1 and 4-1.

Secondary Choices

Arikara (1) at 4-1 trained by Robert Maybin and ridden by Kerron Khelawan draws the coveted rail post at 1210f, which is a massive advantage when the track is playing fast. Khelawan is in excellent form and will know exactly how to use the inside position. At 4-1 with the rail and a capable trainer-jockey combination, Arikara (1) is potentially undervalued relative to the co-favorites.

Cumberland Falls (5) at 4-1 trained by Elton Dickey and ridden by Antonio Whitehall is the other 4-1 morning-line selection. Dickey's barn is modestly active, and Cumberland Falls (5) must deal with a wider post at a distance where inside position matters significantly. Whitehall is a solid professional, but the post position disadvantage is real at 1210f.

Longshots

Cymbal Court (6) at 10-1 trained by Steven Gaskin and ridden by Rachaad Knights draws the widest post in a short sprint, which is a genuine disadvantage. Knights is talented enough to offset some of the post-position penalty, but at 1210f, getting caught wide through the entire stretch is crippling. Include only in trifectas and superfectas.

La Gata Salvaje (4) at 15-1 trained by Chance Dales and ridden by Neville Stephenson is a significant longshot at this level. Even Stephenson's experience won't be enough to overcome what appears to be a significant class or form deficit at 15-1. Superfecta inclusion only.

Selections

Win: Arikara (1) Place: Mystic Song (2) Show: Queen Of Attitude (3)

Betting Strategy: Arikara (1) at 4-1 with the rail at 1210f represents genuine value over the co-2-1 favorites. The exacta of Arikara (1) over Mystic Song (2) should pay a respectable price if both run to their morning lines. A trifecta box of Arikara (1), Mystic Song (2), and Queen Of Attitude (3) is a natural play given the Maybin double entry and the Anderson barn's runner. The Maybin stable's decision to enter two horses here is notable — with Khelawan on Arikara (1) and Patterson on Queen Of Attitude (3), both riders are capable of winning. The fact that Khelawan — who has been the meet's standout rider — is on the 4-1 suggests he may be the barn's preferred weapon despite the longer odds.

RACE 4 — Post 9:50/(8:50)/7:50/6:50 — 1760f | D | AO | OClm 12500b | BUN | Purse $17,000

Race 4 stretches out to 1760 furlongs, which is approximately a mile and one-eighth equivalent in Assiniboia's measurement system, making this the second-longest race on the card after Race 6. Six horses contest this open claimer restricted to older horses at the $12,500 claiming level with a $17,000 purse. This distance is a test of stamina and tactical versatility.

Pace Analysis

Golden Buck (6) at 2-1 trained by Mike Taphorn and ridden by Tyrone Nelson is the clear public choice and will likely set the tempo or sit just off the pace. At 1760f, horses that can travel comfortably through the middle portions of the race while saving something for the stretch are at a premium. Luka Grazie (4) at 3-1 and Nu Soup For Baby (5) at 6-1 figure to be involved in the pace scenario. If Golden Buck (6) is a front-runner and gets a soft lead at this route distance, the race could be over early.

Key Contenders

Golden Buck (6) at 2-1 trained by Mike Taphorn and ridden by Tyrone Nelson is the logical choice. Taphorn is a knowledgeable horseman at this level, and the outside post at a route distance is not necessarily a disadvantage at 1760f since there is ample ground to settle into position. Nelson is a competent route rider and will give Golden Buck (6) every opportunity to fire.

Luka Grazie (4) at 3-1 trained by Ryan Desjarlais and ridden by Sven Balroop is the main challenger from the four post. Desjarlais has been active this meet, and Luka Grazie (4) appears to be pointing for this spot specifically. The 3-1 morning line indicates legitimate form, and Balroop has shown comfort at route distances. This horse is a genuine threat to the favorite.

Secondary Choices

Magic Tiger (3) at 5-1 trained by Norbert Keshane and ridden by R. Cumberbatch draws the three post, which is favorable at the route distance. Keshane's barn occasionally produces live shots, and Magic Tiger (3) at 5-1 offers real value if this horse has the stamina to handle 1760f. Cumberbatch has been a dependable option for trainers needing a professional performance.

Nu Soup For Baby (5) at 6-1 trained by Brian Phillips and ridden by Kerron Khelawan cannot be overlooked with Khelawan in the saddle. Phillips' barn is on the lighter side of activity this meet, but Khelawan's presence on the 6-1 horse in this spot is notable. If the public money drives Golden Buck (6) below 2-1 on the board, Nu Soup For Baby (5) becomes an even more attractive overlay.

Longshots

Burn Jakey Burn (1) at 4-1 trained by Wendy Anderson and ridden by Damario Bynoe gets the inside post at the route, which is a meaningful advantage. Anderson's barn is solid, and at 4-1, this is not a throwout. Burn Jakey Burn (1) should be included in exactas and trifectas given the post position and trainer competence.

Complete Overhaul (2) at 20-1 trained by Maria Stanford and ridden by Neville Stephenson is a significant price in a six-horse field. Even with Stephenson in the irons, 20-1 in a short field suggests a horse that has not been competitive at this level. Include only as a superfecta filler.

Selections

Win: Golden Buck (6) Place: Luka Grazie (4) Show: Burn Jakey Burn (1)

Betting Strategy: The 2-1 favorite is the most logical single, but the best value play in this race is an exacta with Golden Buck (6) over Luka Grazie (4) or a trifecta using Golden Buck (6) on top, Luka Grazie (4) in the middle, and Burn Jakey Burn (1) or Magic Tiger (3) in the third spot. If Nu Soup For Baby (5) shows up in a meaningful way at 6-1, it would represent a significant upset, but the Khelawan angle makes it worth a small exacta play using Nu Soup For Baby (5) over Golden Buck (6) as an alternative ticket.

RACE 5 — Post 10:15/(9:15)/8:15/7:15 — 1320f | D | AO | OClm 22500b | BUM | Purse $21,000

The featured sprint for older horses on the early portion of the card, Race 5 is an open claimer at the $22,500 level with a $21,000 purse. This is the highest claiming price on the card outside of Race 6's stakes, meaning the horses entered here carry genuine class credentials. Six runners meet at 1320f, and the even-money morning-line favorite makes this a race where exacta value must be found underneath.

Pace Analysis

Welcometohollywood (6) at 1-1 trained by Jared Brown and ridden by Kerron Khelawan is the clear public choice and will draw significant public money. At 1320f with a 1-1 morning line, this horse is either a dominant class advantage or a horse that has been crushing a softer group. Rocky Bay Rae (3) at 3-1 and Chai (1) at 4-1 figure to be involved in the early pace. If Welcometohollywood (6) is a stalker-type that comes from off the pace, the front-runners in the field could get exposed down the lane.

Key Contenders

Welcometohollywood (6) at 1-1 trained by Jared Brown and ridden by Kerron Khelawan is the prohibitive favorite. Brown has demonstrated an effective training operation at this meet, and the Khelawan-Brown combination has been one of the meet's most productive. At $22,500 claiming price, this is elevated company for Assiniboia, and a 1-1 morning line suggests Welcometohollywood (6) has credentials that far exceed the competition. Single this horse in multi-race wagers.

Rocky Bay Rae (3) at 3-1 trained by Cindy Krasner and ridden by R. Cumberbatch is the main challenger. Krasner is an active presence at the Downs, and the three post is a solid tactical position in a six-horse sprint. At 3-1, Rocky Bay Rae (3) is the most logical exacta partner with the favorite. Cumberbatch has been reliable and capable of handling a short sprint efficiently.

Secondary Choices

Chai (1) at 4-1 trained by Judy Hunter and ridden by Damario Bynoe draws the inside post and has the advantage of rail position. Hunter's barn is a limited presence but has spotted Chai (1) with tactical intent here. At 4-1 with the inside post at a sprint distance, this filly is a legitimate secondary play. If Welcometohollywood (6) runs into unexpected trouble, Chai (1) is positioned to benefit.

Flash Master (4) at 6-1 trained by Jerry Gourneau and ridden by Neville Stephenson gives Gourneau his first of multiple entries tonight. At 6-1, Flash Master (4) represents an overlay if the horse has worked well into this condition. Stephenson's experience at sprint distances is an asset, and the four post is workable in a six-horse field.

Longshots

Mechanic Susie (2) at 8-1 trained by Elton Dickey and ridden by Rachaad Knights is a price player's option. The two post is fine at this distance, and Knights has demonstrated strong ability at the Downs in recent weeks. However, the 8-1 morning line suggests Dickey's barn has not produced a convincing recent effort. Trifecta inclusion is warranted given Knights' skill.

Out Too Late (5) at 15-1 trained by Brent Hrymak and ridden by Antonio Whitehall is the biggest morning-line underdog in this field. A horse at 15-1 in a six-horse field at the meet's top claiming price is clearly facing significant class or form issues. Superfecta only.

Selections

Win: Welcometohollywood (6) Place: Rocky Bay Rae (3) Show: Chai (1)

Betting Strategy: With an even-money favorite, the win pool is essentially unplayable for value. The exacta of Welcometohollywood (6) over Rocky Bay Rae (3) is the most logical play and should return a fair price. For trifecta construction, use Welcometohollywood (6) and Rocky Bay Rae (3) on top with Chai (1) and Flash Master (4) underneath. The Khelawan-Brown combination makes Welcometohollywood (6) a confident single in any multi-race exotic that spans this race.

RACE 6 — Post 10:40/(9:40)/8:40/7:40 — 1870f | D | N | Plentiful25k | BUN | Purse $25,000

The Plentiful25k is the marquee race of the evening, a stakes event at 1870f — the longest distance on the card. Eight horses enter this premium event, which is a significant field size for a Assiniboia stakes. The 2-1 morning-line favorite Judo (5) is from the Wendy Anderson barn, which has been active throughout the card. The wide-open nature of a stakes field with eight runners creates excellent exotic wagering opportunities.

Pace Analysis

At 1870f, stamina and tactical positioning through the long run of the back side are essential. Elston Gunnn (1) at 3-1 and Dominant Spirit (4) at 4-1 figure to be involved in the early position battle. Judo (5) at 2-1 could be a stalker-type that allows others to set the pace before unleashing a sustained late move. If a hot pace develops early — which is possible with multiple tactical speed horses in the field — closers like What's Shakin (8) at 8-1 could be dangerous. The 1870f distance rewards horses that can travel efficiently through the first quarter mile before turning for home.

Key Contenders

Judo (5) at 2-1 trained by Wendy Anderson and ridden by Sven Balroop is the clear public choice and a logical favorite in the evening's premium event. Anderson has been effective this meet with multiple horses on the card, and Judo (5) represents the stable's best runner. The five post in an eight-horse field at this distance is manageable, and Balroop has been comfortable on Anderson horses throughout the meet. A confident single in this race if you're constructing a Pick 4 or Pick 5.

Elston Gunnn (1) at 3-1 trained by Eugene Burns and ridden by R. Cumberbatch draws the rail in an eight-horse stakes, which is a genuine advantage at Assiniboia's route distance. Burns is a proven trainer at this circuit, and Elston Gunnn (1) at 3-1 with the inside post represents strong value relative to the favorite. Cumberbatch has been reliable throughout the card and will capitalize on the ground-saving opportunity.

Secondary Choices

Dominant Spirit (4) at 4-1 trained by Jerry Gourneau and ridden by Neville Stephenson gives Gourneau his second entrant of the evening. Gourneau is sending out multiple horses tonight, and Dominant Spirit (4) is priced at a level that suggests legitimate capability at 1870f. Stephenson is the most experienced jockey in the race and should give Dominant Spirit (4) an intelligent trip. At 4-1 in a stakes, this is a horse worth including in all exotic structures.

Wico (2) at 6-1 trained by Jared Brown and ridden by Antonio Whitehall gives Brown another competitive entry after Lab Rat (3) in Race 2 and Welcometohollywood (6) in Race 5. If Brown is running well, Wico (2) at 6-1 could be an undervalued stakes runner. The two post is fine at 1870f, and Whitehall is a capable partner at the route distance.

Longshots

What's Shakin (8) at 8-1 trained by Cindy Krasner and ridden by Kerron Khelawan is perhaps the most intriguing longshot on the card. Khelawan is at the top of his game this meet, and Krasner's barn showed competitive form through Rocky Bay Rae (3) in Race 5. At 8-1 in a stakes with the meet's leading rider, What's Shakin (8) deserves serious consideration as an upset special. The wide eight post at 1870f is a concern, but Khelawan's ability to find position cannot be underestimated.

Mr Jaws (6) at 12-1 trained by Jerry Gourneau and ridden by Dario Dalrymple is Gourneau's second entrant in this race — the stable appears to be running two horses in hopes one fires. At 12-1, Mr Jaws (6) is a price play worth including in superfectas and as a trifecta outsider.

Pay My Way (7) at 25-1 trained by Charlene Miller and ridden by Rachaad Knights is a significant underdog in this stakes. Miller is not a dominant presence at the meet, and 25-1 in the feature suggests limited recent form. Include as a superfecta fill only.

Cortex (3) at 40-1 trained by Terry Neubuhr and ridden by Rashawn Brewster is the longest morning-line price on the entire card. In an eight-horse stakes with a 40-1 shot, this horse is included primarily to round out the field. Superfecta plays only, and only on the smallest of tickets.

Selections

Win: Judo (5) Place: Elston Gunnn (1) Show: Dominant Spirit (4)

Betting Strategy: The featured race sets up beautifully for exotic wagering. The exacta of Judo (5) over Elston Gunnn (1) should return a healthy price despite the 2-1 favorite being on top. The trifecta structure of Judo (5) with Elston Gunnn (1) and Dominant Spirit (4) in various configurations is the primary play. For value, include What's Shakin (8) in a smaller trifecta ticket — if Khelawan conjures an upset at 8-1, a trifecta payout could be significant. The $25,000 purse and eight-horse field make this the card's best superfecta race as well.

RACE 7 — Post 11:05/(10:05)/9:05/8:05 — 1320f | D | C | Clm 5000n2l | BUM | Purse $10,100

The nightcap is a $5,000 claimer restricted to non-winners of two races, a bottom-level sprint that closes out the Assiniboia card. Seven fillies and mares go to the gate at 1320f, and the 1-1 morning-line favorite Witts Opulent Lady (4) from the Gourneau barn dominates the morning line in a race that is otherwise wide open at the lower prices.

Pace Analysis

At 1320f with a 1-1 favorite and multiple speed horses likely in the field, early fractions could be quick for the level. Witts Opulent Lady (4) at 1-1 will attract significant money and is likely a pace-setter or stalker at a sprint distance. Golden Cheero (7) at 3-1 figures to be the primary challenger. If multiple horses press Witts Opulent Lady (4) through the turn, there could be a pace collapse that benefits a closer, but at this level, that scenario is unlikely to materialize.

Key Contenders

Witts Opulent Lady (4) at 1-1 trained by Jerry Gourneau and ridden by Damario Bynoe is the overwhelming public choice in this closer. Gourneau enters three horses on the card tonight — Flash Master (4) in Race 5, Dominant Spirit (4) and Mr Jaws (6) in Race 6, and Amplify (3) in Race 7 as well — making the stable one of the busiest of the evening. The 1-1 morning line here indicates a horse that has been competitive and is expected to win decisively at the bottom claiming level. Bynoe is a capable rider who won't make mistakes in the sprint.

Golden Cheero (7) at 3-1 trained by Carl Anderson and ridden by Javaniel R. Patterson is the morning-line second choice. Anderson has been one of the meet's most consistent trainers, and Golden Cheero (7) at 3-1 in the seven post of a seven-horse field is competitive. Patterson gives this filly a professional ride, and if Witts Opulent Lady (4) runs into any trouble, Golden Cheero (7) is well-positioned to capitalize.

Secondary Choices

Grenache (2) at 5-1 trained by Wendy Anderson and ridden by Tyrone Nelson draws a favorable post at sprint distance. Anderson is active throughout the card, and at 5-1, Grenache (2) represents value if this filly has the early speed to track the favorite. Nelson has been consistent throughout the meet.

Amplify (3) at 10-1 trained by Jerry Gourneau and ridden by Dario Dalrymple is the stablemate to Witts Opulent Lady (4). Gourneau splitting his book between Witts Opulent Lady (4) at 1-1 and Amplify (3) at 10-1 suggests the stable's clear preference. Amplify (3) is likely entered to generate pace or as a genuine secondary option. At 10-1 in a $5,000 claimer nightcap, the value play is minimal, but trifecta inclusion is prudent given the same trainer dynamic.

Longshots

Call Darla (5) at 12-1 trained by Perry Cavanaugh and ridden by R. Cumberbatch gives Cumberbatch his final mount of the evening. Cavanaugh is not a major presence at the meet, and 12-1 reflects limited expectation. However, Cumberbatch is professional enough to produce a competitive effort if the horse is anywhere close to ready. Include in trifectas as a deep outsider.

Counting On You (1) at 15-1 trained by Jared Brown and ridden by Kerron Khelawan draws the inside rail post in the nightcap. With Brown's barn having multiple horses on the card and Khelawan riding well, this is a marginal longshot that deserves a second look despite the daunting morning-line price. The rail at 1320f is a real asset, and if Counting On You (1) has any early speed, Khelawan will know how to use the position. A small win or exacta investment here could pay handsomely.

Hyper Holiday (6) at 15-1 trained by Devon Gittens and ridden by Rashawn Brewster is a co-longest-shot in the field. Gittens is a limited trainer presence, and 15-1 in a bottom claimer nightcap typically means a horse that is returning from a long layoff or has not shown competitive recent form. Superfecta use only.

Selections

Win: Witts Opulent Lady (4) Place: Golden Cheero (7) Show: Grenache (2)

Betting Strategy: The 1-1 favorite in the nightcap offers no win-pool value, but the exacta of Witts Opulent Lady (4) over Golden Cheero (7) is a straightforward play that should return a fair price given the public will hammer both horses. The better angles here are: a trifecta key using Witts Opulent Lady (4) on top with Golden Cheero (7), Grenache (2), and Amplify (3) underneath, or a reverse exacta play using Counting On You (1) at 15-1 over Witts Opulent Lady (4) for the upset exotic. A $1 exacta using Counting On You (1) on top is inexpensive and carries significant upside if Khelawan gets the rail trip working.

Jockey Notes and Insights

Kerron Khelawan is the rider to follow throughout this card. With mounts in Races 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 7 — covering Boujee Britches (1) in Race 1, Lab Rat (3) in Race 2, Arikara (1) in Race 3, Nu Soup For Baby (5) in Race 4, Welcometohollywood (6) in Race 5, and Counting On You (1) in Race 7 — Khelawan is the busiest rider on the card and figures to be the meet's leading jockey. His combination with trainer Jared Brown on Lab Rat (3) and Welcometohollywood (6) is particularly notable, as the Brown-Khelawan combination has been one of the most productive pairings at the Downs this summer.

Neville Stephenson is another veteran with multiple mounts tonight. He rides Misspennymischief (3) in Race 1, The Ronald (4) in Race 2, La Gata Salvaje (4) in Race 3, Complete Overhaul (2) in Race 4, Flash Master (4) in Race 5, and Dominant Spirit (4) in Race 6. Stephenson's experience at the route distances is valuable, particularly in Races 4 and 6, where stamina and tactical patience will be tested.

Rachaad Knights has an interesting book that includes My Kinda Delite (2) in Race 1 — a horse that could produce an exacta overlay — as well as Cymbal Court (6) in Race 3, Mechanic Susie (2) in Race 5, Pay My Way (7) in Race 6, and Grenache (2) in Race 7. Knights has been sharp this meet and is capable of delivering a surprise result when put on a horse with a playable price.

R. Cumberbatch rides Magic Tiger (3) in Race 4, Rocky Bay Rae (3) in Race 5, Elston Gunnn (1) in Race 6, and Call Darla (5) in Race 7. His mount on Elston Gunnn (1) in the featured Race 6 is the most significant of his book, and the 3-1 morning-line price with the inside post makes this a legitimate threat to the stakes favorite.

Damario Bynoe pilots Burn Jakey Burn (1) in Race 4, Chai (1) in Race 5, and Witts Opulent Lady (4) in Race 7. His three mounts all carry favorable tactical positions — two draw the inside post — and all three are competitive at their morning-line prices.

Antonio Whitehall's book includes Master Of Disguise (2) in Race 2, Cumberland Falls (5) in Race 3, Wico (2) in Race 6, and Out Too Late (5) in Race 5. His best chance at a meaningful result is with Wico (2) in the stakes, where Jared Brown's barn continues to be active.

Trainer Notes and Insights

Jerry Gourneau has the most horses on tonight's card with entries in Races 5, 6, and 7. His double entry in Race 6 with Dominant Spirit (4) and Mr Jaws (6) is the most interesting stable decision of the evening. In stakes races with multiple entries, trainers often have a clear preference, and the 4-1 morning line on Dominant Spirit (4) versus 12-1 on Mr Jaws (6) suggests the stable's pecking order is clear. His Witts Opulent Lady (4) at 1-1 in Race 7 is expected to be his most dominant performance of the evening.

Jared Brown has horses in Races 2, 5, and 6 with Lab Rat (3), Welcometohollywood (6), and Wico (2). The stable appears in peak form, and Khelawan's presence on both Lab Rat (3) and Welcometohollywood (6) — two of the card's morning-line favorites — underscores the barn's confidence. A winning night for Brown could produce two or more victories if the favorites deliver.

Carl Anderson trains horses in Races 1, 2, 3, and 7 with Zibibbo (4), Hey Big Un (1), Mystic Song (2), and Golden Cheero (7). Anderson's stable is arguably the most widely distributed on the card, and the trainer consistently places horses at appropriate levels. His runners deserve automatic respect regardless of the morning-line price.

Jason Homer saddles Misspennymischief (3) and Lisa Connects (5) in Race 1, plus The Ronald (4) in Race 2. The dual entry in Race 1 is the defining storyline of the opener, and Homer's ability to win with multiple entries in the same race is a significant handicapping factor.

Wendy Anderson's stable covers Boujee Britches (1) in Race 1, Burn Jakey Burn (1) in Race 4, Judo (5) in Race 6, and Grenache (2) in Race 7. The featured stakes mount Judo (5) is her best chance for a significant score, and with Sven Balroop in the saddle at the 2-1 price, the Anderson barn is positioned well in the evening's premier event.

Robert Maybin enters both Arikara (1) and Queen Of Attitude (3) in Race 3, giving him a two-pronged attack in the filly sprint at 4-1 and 2-1 respectively. The Khelawan selection to ride the 4-1 Arikara (1) rather than the co-favorite Queen Of Attitude (3) is telling — top jockeys typically ride what they believe gives them the best chance to win, and Khelawan on the longer-odds horse is a meaningful signal.

Best Wagering Strategies and Value Plays

The card at Assiniboia on August 25, 2026 presents a structure where three of the seven races feature even-money or near-even-money favorites — Lab Rat (3) at 1-1 in Race 2, Welcometohollywood (6) at 1-1 in Race 5, and Witts Opulent Lady (4) at 1-1 in Race 7. That means the win pools in those three races offer no overlay for the logical choice, and the angle must be to leverage those horses as singles in multi-race exotics rather than playing them straight.

The Pick 4 spanning Races 4 through 7 is the best structured multi-race play on the card. Use Golden Buck (6) in Race 4, single Welcometohollywood (6) in Race 5, spread Judo (5) and Elston Gunnn (1) in Race 6, and single Witts Opulent Lady (4) in Race 7. A $1 base ticket with a spread in Race 6 costs $2 and could produce a very satisfying return if the two even-money horses deliver and the stakes produces the favorite or the second choice.

For the Pick 7 if offered at Assiniboia, singling the three 1-1 morning-line choices — Lab Rat (3), Welcometohollywood (6), and Witts Opulent Lady (4) — while spreading in Races 1, 3, 4, and 6 creates a manageable ticket structure with legitimate upset potential in the spread races.

The best individual race value plays on the card are:

Arikara (1) at 4-1 in Race 3 with the rail post at 1210f over co-favorites at 2-1 represents the clearest overlay on the card. The Khelawan rail angle at a short sprint distance is the single most compelling value play of the evening.

What's Shakin (8) at 8-1 in Race 6 with Khelawan in the stakes is an upset special worth a modest win investment. If Khelawan fires on the 8-1 horse in the feature, the trifecta and superfecta payouts could be substantial.

Counting On You (1) at 15-1 in Race 7 with Khelawan and the rail post in the nightcap is a fringe investment, but the combination of the meet's best rider, the inside post at a sprint distance, and a double-digit morning line makes this a $2 win ticket at minimum.

The exacta of Arikara (1) over Mystic Song (2) in Race 3 is the single best-value exacta play on the card given the post-position edge, the trainer double-entry intrigue, and the 4-1 morning line on the horse ridden by the meet's top jockey.

For Race 6, the trifecta using Judo (5) on top, Elston Gunnn (1) in second, and Dominant Spirit (4) in third is the primary structured play in the featured stakes. Alternate tickets should include What's Shakin (8) underneath in place of or in addition to Dominant Spirit (4). A superfecta using those four horses in various configurations at the $0.10 level provides broad coverage at minimal cost.

The best single race for exotic concentration is Race 6, the Plentiful25k, where eight runners, a 40-1 bomb, multiple competitive prices, and the card's top purse combine to create a genuine exotic opportunity. A $1 superfecta box of Judo (5), Elston Gunnn (1), Dominant Spirit (4), and What's Shakin (8) costs $24 and covers the logical outcomes of the feature. If Mr Jaws (6) or Wico (2) sneaks into the frame, the return on an open-ended trifecta ticket could be significant.
