Race Day Overview — Assiniboia Downs | September 14, 2026

Assiniboia Downs closes out what has been a competitive late-summer meet with a seven-race card on Monday, September 14, 2026. The card leans heavily toward the claiming and maiden ranks that define the Winnipeg circuit, with purses ranging from $10,000 at the bottom end of the claiming ladder up to $21,500 for the maiden special weight sprint in Race 2. The feature event is Race 7, an optional claiming route going a mile and three-sixteenths on the dirt for older horses, with a $19,000 purse that brings together some of the more seasoned campaigners on the grounds.

Seven races are spread across the afternoon beginning at 8:30 AM local time, with the card wrapping up with Race 7 at 11:05 AM. The majority of the card is contested at claiming prices between $3,000 and $5,000, which reflects the typical late-meet inventory at Assiniboia, where trainers are looking to get horses placed and running before the barn closes for the season. The presence of a $21,500 maiden special weight and a $19,000 optional claimer at the top of the card suggests the meet still has quality horses in action as September winds down.

Notable trainer patterns on this card include Lise Pruitt, who saddles multiple horses across several races, and Jerry Gourneau, who also has entries spread throughout the afternoon. Robert Maybin, Jared Brown, and Tom Gardipy Jr. are among the other multi-entry trainers to watch. On the jockey side, Antonio Whitehall, Rachaad Knights, Kerron Khelawan, and Shavon Townsend are the busiest riders today, each carrying four or more mounts across the card.

Weather and Track Conditions

Winnipeg typically sees mild, dry conditions in mid-September, with daytime highs in the range of 14 to 18 degrees Celsius and limited precipitation risk in the early fall period. September 14 falls within a historically dry stretch for the region, and the Assiniboia oval is generally fast and true during this time of year. The dirt surface at ASD is a standard North American oval that tends to favor speed horses when the track is rated fast, with pace setters and stalkers both competitive depending on the configuration of each field.

No significant weather events are expected to alter the racing surface for today's card. The track is expected to be rated fast, and rail positions are maintained in their standard location. Late-season maintenance at Assiniboia has historically kept the surface consistent, and bettors should not anticipate any meaningful shifting in the going between races.

Track Bias and Post Position Analysis

Assiniboia Downs is a tight five-eighths-mile oval, and post position dynamics are particularly relevant in sprint races, especially those going shorter than 1210 furlongs. In sprints of 1100 furlongs, the inside posts carry a meaningful advantage because horses break close to the first turn, giving early speed from the rail or second post a structural advantage. At 1210 furlongs, the chute provides a bit more room and the advantage softens slightly, though early speed from the one and two posts still benefits from clean trips.

At 1540 furlongs and beyond, the dynamics shift somewhat. The extra distance allows horses from outer posts to settle into position without being slammed by early traffic. At 1650 furlongs — the longest configuration on today's card — post position bias is less determinative than pace scenario, with stalkers and closers often finding more success as the field gets strung out around the oval.

The late-summer Assiniboia surface has historically favored pace setters who can clear the field early, particularly in sprints under 1210 furlongs. Rail-skimming speed horses have enjoyed a measurable edge through much of the meet. In routes, however, there has been more of a bias toward stalkers who sit two or three lengths off a contested pace. Today's card features several races that look pace-heated on paper, which could set up for closers and stalkers to improve their chances. Inside posts (one through three) in today's sprint races merit extra attention.

RACE 1 — Post 8:30 — 1540f | D | C | Clm 4000 | BUM | Purse $11,800

Five fillies and mares go to the post in this six-furlongs-and-change claiming event at the $4,000 level. The condition is open to older horses on the dirt, and the field is relatively compact, suggesting a competitive but straightforward affair. With two co-favorites installed at 2-1, the morning line offers some guidance but will likely shift before post time.

Pace Analysis

The pace scenario here is somewhat muddled, which makes this race trickier to read than the field size would suggest. Norma No (2) and Kikilove (3) are both installed at 2-1 and figure to be the primary pace influences. Hardly Mischievous (5), also at 2-1, may be more of a stalker type. Princess Aleska (1) on the inside could show early foot from the rail. With multiple potential pace setters in a five-horse field, the pace could develop as a heated contest through the first half, setting up a closer. However, the tight field and familiar class level may keep things honest.

Key Contenders

Norma No (2) is one of two horses trained by Robert Maybin in this field and draws the rail-adjacent two post, which is a positive in a sprint of this length at Assiniboia. Maybin has shown confidence by entering two horses in this race, and Norma No (2) draws the more favorable of the two posts. The 2-1 morning line reflects legitimate respect from the line-maker, and her post position combined with Maybin's barn form makes her a logical top selection. Christopher Roy Mamdeen has shown a familiarity with Maybin horses on the circuit.

Kikilove (3) represents the Michael Nault barn and draws post three, which is an excellent position in a five-horse field at this distance. At 2-1 on the morning line, Kikilove (3) is a legitimate co-favorite, and Antonio Whitehall has been one of the more active and effective riders on the grounds this meet. Nault's horses have been competitive in the claiming ranks all meet, and Kikilove (3) gets a positive post draw.

Hardly Mischievous (5) is the third horse installed at 2-1 and represents trainer Lise Pruitt. The Pruitt barn has been active all meet, and Rachaad Knights is a strong jockey pick-up. From the five post in a five-horse field, Hardly Mischievous (5) will need to navigate traffic or hope for a breakneck pace up front. If the two and three horses get into a duel, Hardly Mischievous (5) could be the one to benefit late.

Secondary Choices

Princess Aleska (1) runs in the Maybin barn alongside Norma No (2), which gives the stable a strong hand in this race. Javaniel R. Patterson takes the mount. At 6-1 on the morning line, Princess Aleska (1) offers some value if the stable's preferred choice here is actually this one, with the stable likely using Norma No (2) as a pace influence or decoy. The rail post is a genuine asset in this sprint, and Princess Aleska (1) should not be dismissed lightly.

Longshots

Play Free Bird (4) goes off at 10-1 and represents the Jason Homer barn with Shavon Townsend in the irons. While the morning line suggests this horse is a significant step below the top three, Homer has hit with longshots on this circuit, and Townsend is capable. Play Free Bird (4) would need pace trouble ahead to find its best effort but is included in exotics at the right price.

Betting Strategy

With three horses at 2-1, the win pool will likely be divided in ways that suppress value on any one of them. The best approach here is to use Norma No (2) and Kikilove (3) on top of exactas and trifectas with Hardly Mischievous (5) and Princess Aleska (1) underneath. A straight win bet on Norma No (2) is acceptable given her post position and trainer confidence. Avoid Play Free Bird (4) in win wagering but include in deeper trifecta combinations at the right price.

Selections

Win: Norma No (2) Place: Kikilove (3) Show: Hardly Mischievous (5)

RACE 2 — Post 9:00 — 1210f | D | S | Md Sp Wt | AON | Purse $21,500

Six horses go to the post in this maiden special weight sprint at approximately six furlongs on the main track, restricted to fillies and mares. With a purse of $21,500, this is the richest sprint on the card and carries the highest class. Maiden specials at Assiniboia can be competitive and unpredictable, particularly when multiple first-time starters or lightly raced horses are involved.

Pace Analysis

Maximum Uproar (1) and She's A Maneater (2) are co-favorites at 2-1 and figure to establish the early pace from their inside posts. Onemorsteptoheaven (5) at 6-1 may have tactical speed as well. If the two favorites match strides through the opening panels, it could set up Honourable Mention (6) as a late-running beneficiary on the outside. The six-horse field makes pace reading cleaner than larger fields, and any horse that can stalk a heated duel from third or fourth position will be in play in the stretch.

Key Contenders

Maximum Uproar (1) draws the rail in a six-furlong sprint and has the benefit of a clean break putting her immediately in the best position. The Keith Pederson barn has been operating steadily this meet, and Antonio Whitehall, one of the card's busiest jockeys, takes the mount. Whitehall's experience and aggressiveness on the front end make Maximum Uproar (1) a genuine contender for early control of this race.

She's A Maneater (2) comes out of the Jared Brown stable, one of the more respected outfits on the Assiniboia grounds. Drawing post two alongside the rail horse, She's A Maneater (2) will get a clear shot early, and Kerron Khelawan has been a reliable performer on this circuit. Brown's maiden runners tend to be well-prepared, and She's A Maneater (2) figures to engage Maximum Uproar (1) immediately out of the gate.

Secondary Choices

Honourable Mention (6) comes from the Lise Pruitt barn and draws the outside post in a six-horse field. At 4-1, she offers mid-range value if the pace gets heated inside. Sven Balroop takes the mount for Pruitt. The outside post at 1210 furlongs at Assiniboia is not ideal, but in a pace-heated race with horses potentially tiring in the stretch, a late-running type from the six post can circle the field and come with a strong run. This is a logical exacta and trifecta inclusion.

Az Silencer (3) represents the Eugene Burns stable at 5-1 with Shavon Townsend up. The three post is workable in this sprint, and Townsend is capable of rating a horse in mid-pack and producing a late kick. Az Silencer (3) could be the type that benefits from being off the early pace duel between posts one and two.

Longshots

Onemorsteptoheaven (5) is at 6-1 from trainer Mike Taphorn and jockey Dario Dalrymple. Taphorn has been active on the Assiniboia circuit, and at 6-1 this horse offers a degree of value. From the five post, Onemorsteptoheaven (5) may stalk from mid-pack and offer a strong late run. Dalrymple is a capable hand and this horse deserves inclusion in trifecta combinations.

Ringit (4) opens at 15-1 from the Victoria Morse barn with Devante Prescod up. Morse has been competitive with horses at the claiming level but maiden specials are more of a test. Ringit (4) is a difficult recommendation at any level but deserves inclusion in superfecta boxes for players seeking wide coverage.

Betting Strategy

The pace matchup between Maximum Uproar (1) and She's A Maneater (2) sets up a natural speed duel that could benefit the mid-pack horses on the turn. Exactas using She's A Maneater (2) over Maximum Uproar (1) and Honourable Mention (6) are attractive. Also consider keying Honourable Mention (6) on top in exactas with Maximum Uproar (1) and She's A Maneater (2) underneath if the speed duel materializes fully. Trifecta boxes using the top four horses at manageable cost are recommended.

Selections

Win: She's A Maneater (2) Place: Maximum Uproar (1) Show: Honourable Mention (6)

RACE 3 — Post 9:25 — 1540f | D | C | Clm 3000n1y | BUN | Purse $10,000

Six horses compete in this $3,000 non-winners of one year claiming event at approximately seven furlongs on the dirt, restricted to fillies and mares. This is the softest claiming condition on the card, and the field features horses looking for their first win in the past year or longer. These races can be volatile, and the two morning-line co-favorites at 2-1 may not be as dominant as their odds suggest.

Pace Analysis

Oregon County (5) and Shamayim (6) are both 2-1 morning-line choices and figure to be the primary contenders. Gallant Oak (2) at 3-1 and Free Maker (3) at 4-1 add depth to the pace scenario. With multiple horses capable of pressing early, this race has the potential for a moderate-to-fast pace. At seven furlongs, pace will be a meaningful factor, and horses who stalk the early leaders will be in the best position in the stretch.

Key Contenders

Oregon County (5) trains for Jerry Gourneau and gets Damario Bynoe up from the five post. Gourneau has been active all meet and has demonstrated an ability to place horses in appropriate spots. At 2-1, Oregon County (5) is a logical top choice, and the five post in a six-horse field at this distance is manageable. Oregon County (5) will need to show that her class fits at the $3,000 non-winners-of-one-year level.

Shamayim (6) is the second co-favorite from trainer Mike Taphorn, who had a presence earlier in Race 2 with Onemorsteptoheaven (5). Rachaad Knights takes over the mount, which is a significant jockey upgrade. At 2-1 from the outside post, Shamayim (6) will need to be ridden aggressively to establish position or will need to use her natural ability to close in the stretch. The Taphorn-Knights combination is one to respect.

Secondary Choices

Gallant Oak (2) comes out of the Sherry Laing barn and draws a favorable two post in a six-horse field. Christopher Roy Mamdeen rides, and at 3-1, Gallant Oak (2) offers fair value. From a favorable post, Gallant Oak (2) will have a clean trip near the rail and can rate kindly. If the pace gets hot in the first half, Gallant Oak (2) is positioned well to close into the stretch.

Free Maker (3) is trained by Fred Rawson and gets Antonio Whitehall, one of today's top jockeys. At 4-1, Free Maker (3) offers solid value if Whitehall can put the horse in a favorable tracking position off the early pace. The three post is ideal in this sprint, and Rawson horses tend to be properly placed at this level.

Longshots

Sarah's Vision (1) opens at 15-1 from the Andre Ellis stable with Arthur Budhu up. From the one post, Sarah's Vision (1) will be in a position to control the pace if needed, but the high morning-line odds suggest this horse is significantly below the top contenders at this level. Include in superfecta coverage only.

Captive Kitten (4) is the biggest longshot in the field at 25-1 from trainer Victoria Morse and jockey Douglas Badaloo. Morse has a second entry today in Race 2 with Ringit (4). Captive Kitten (4) will need significant improvement and pace trouble to factor. Use only in wide superfecta tickets.

Betting Strategy

The co-favorites here create a situation where the price might be better on Gallant Oak (2) at 3-1 or Free Maker (3) at 4-1 in the win pool. A win bet on Gallant Oak (2) at 3-1 is the recommended approach. Exactas pairing Gallant Oak (2) with Oregon County (5) and Shamayim (6) are attractive. Trifecta boxes using Gallant Oak (2), Oregon County (5), Shamayim (6), and Free Maker (3) provide strong coverage at reasonable cost.

Selections

Win: Gallant Oak (2) Place: Oregon County (5) Show: Shamayim (6)

RACE 4 — Post 9:50 — 1320f | D | C | Clm 5000n2l | BUN | Purse $10,100

Seven horses face the starter in this one-turn mile claiming race restricted to horses that have not won two lifetime races, at the $5,000 claiming price for fillies and mares. This is one of the more competitive races on the lower portion of the card and features a prohibitive morning-line favorite.

Pace Analysis

Sgt. Filkow (5) is installed as the 1-1 morning-line favorite and will set the pace scenario for this race. At even money, the Tiffany Husbands trainee appears to be in a class of her own on paper, but a seven-horse field provides multiple potential pace challengers. Red Dirt Alley (1) at 4-1 and Ralph's Gift (3) at 3-1 may push the pace from different positions. If Sgt. Filkow (5) faces early heat, the stretch could open up for Ralph's Gift (3) or Silver Spiced (7).

Key Contenders

Sgt. Filkow (5) is the most heavily bet horse in this race for a reason. Trained by Tiffany Husbands and drawing post five in a seven-horse field, Sgt. Filkow (5) has the morning-line respect of even money. R. Cumberbatch takes the mount, and the horse figures to be pressing or on the lead through the opening half. If Sgt. Filkow (5) can clear and find a comfortable pace, this horse will be very difficult to beat. At 1-1, however, the win bet offers little value.

Ralph's Gift (3) from the Jared Brown barn is the second choice at 3-1. Kerron Khelawan has been consistent throughout the meet, and Ralph's Gift (3) draws a clean post three. Brown is a capable conditioner who places horses accurately, and Ralph's Gift (3) at 3-1 offers far better value than the favorite if the horse can chase down Sgt. Filkow (5) in the stretch.

Secondary Choices

Red Dirt Alley (1) is the second pick at 4-1 from the Jerry Gourneau barn with Neville Stephenson up. From the inside post, Red Dirt Alley (1) will be vying for early position and could engage Sgt. Filkow (5) through the middle panels. If Red Dirt Alley (1) can press the favorite and cause some early stress, it sets up Ralph's Gift (3) nicely. On its own merits, Red Dirt Alley (1) at 4-1 is a reasonable each-way proposition.

Silver Spiced (7) closes the field from the outside post for trainer Lise Pruitt with Shavon Townsend riding. At 5-1, Silver Spiced (7) offers fair value as a pace-dependent closer. If the pace develops as expected with multiple horses pressing, Silver Spiced (7) could slide through late. Pruitt has shown a willingness to use closers, and Townsend is effective on horses that run late.

Longshots

Saturdays Babe (2) at 15-1 and Shocking Malice (4) at 20-1 are the Pruitt barn's second entry (SHOCKING MALICE), and both face a substantial class hurdle to factor. Rachaad Knights is an upgrade for Saturdays Babe (2) but the price suggests significant doubts about this horse's ability. Liam's Starry Nite (6) at 25-1 from the Robert J. Haar barn with Nathan Haar up is the family entry and has little chance at the morning-line price. All three are superfecta-only plays.

Betting Strategy

The best strategy here is to fade Sgt. Filkow (5) in the win pool and play Ralph's Gift (3) to win, with Sgt. Filkow (5) in second in exactas. If Sgt. Filkow (5) weakens in the stretch from a pace challenge by Red Dirt Alley (1), Ralph's Gift (3) could sweep past both. Trifecta combinations using Ralph's Gift (3) on top, with Sgt. Filkow (5) and Red Dirt Alley (1) in the middle spots, and Silver Spiced (7) in third, offer solid coverage.

Selections

Win: Ralph's Gift (3) Place: Sgt. Filkow (5) Show: Red Dirt Alley (1)

RACE 5 — Post 10:15 — 1100f | D | C | Clm 4000b | BUM | Purse $10,400

Seven horses go to the post in this 5.5-furlong sprint on the main track, a claiming race for older fillies and mares with a “b” allowance condition attached. The five-and-a-half-furlong sprint is the shortest race on the card and places maximum emphasis on early speed and gate quickness. Post position is critical here, as the first turn comes up quickly.

Pace Analysis

Mo Ta (4) is the 1-1 morning-line favorite from the Michael L. Pierce barn and looks like the horse with the most likely early speed from the four post. Low Euro Cat (1) at 3-1 from the Cora Champagne barn will also want to be near the lead from the inside. Miss Z (5) at 4-1 is another possible pace factor. With multiple speed types in this sprint, the pace could develop briskly, which sets up a question of whether Mo Ta (4) has the raw ability to simply outrun the field or whether pace heat could bring others into play.

Key Contenders

Mo Ta (4) is the clear favorite at 1-1 and has Antonio Whitehall up, which is a strong jockey pick-up. The Michael Pierce barn is capable, and Mo Ta (4) at even money suggests this horse is a significant step above the rest of the field on form. At 5.5 furlongs, the four post is not ideal from a bias standpoint, but if Mo Ta (4) has raw speed, she can clear to the rail by the time the field reaches the first turn. The issue is value — at 1-1, win wagering on Mo Ta (4) is not attractive from a return perspective.

Low Euro Cat (1) is trained by Cora Champagne and draws the prime inside post in this sprint. At 3-1, this horse offers significantly more value than the favorite. Sven Balroop rides, and from the one post, Low Euro Cat (1) will be in position to set or press the pace without using extra ground. If Mo Ta (4) is not as dominant as the morning line suggests, Low Euro Cat (1) at 3-1 is an outstanding value.

Secondary Choices

Miss Z (5) represents trainer J. Douglas Mustard and gets Shavon Townsend up at 4-1. The five post is workable, and Townsend is familiar with the Assiniboia layout. Miss Z (5) at 4-1 offers good value if she can sit just off the early pace and pounce on any tiring front-runners. This horse should be included in exactas and trifectas with the top two.

Short Speech (2) is at 7-1 from the Gourneau barn with Damario Bynoe up. At 7-1, this horse is an interesting value play if the pace gets hot. However, the seven post — sorry, post two — is actually in a reasonable spot here. The price of 7-1 makes Short Speech (2) a trifecta inclusion worth considering.

Longshots

Valerie Valeski (7) comes from the Robert Maybin barn at 8-1 with Roger Hewitt up. The outside post is a disadvantage in a 5.5-furlong sprint, but Maybin knows this circuit well. At 8-1, Valerie Valeski (7) is a mild longshot with a realistic trainer behind her. Include in trifecta combinations.

Unknown Caller (3) at 15-1 from the Robert J. Haar barn gets Nathan Haar up again, the family combination that also appears in Race 4. At 15-1, the price is somewhat attractive for superfecta coverage, but the horse faces a steep task.

Maibella (6) opens at 30-1 from the Maria Stanford stable with Neville Stephenson up. At 30-1, Maibella (6) is a clear longshot and belongs in wide superfecta tickets only. Stanford horses at this price point rarely factor.

Betting Strategy

The best play in Race 5 is an exacta using Low Euro Cat (1) over Mo Ta (4) and Miss Z (5). If Low Euro Cat (1) can steal the lead from the rail, Mo Ta (4) may not be able to reel her in. The 3-1 vs. 1-1 comparison makes this exacta structurally attractive. Trifecta boxes using Low Euro Cat (1), Mo Ta (4), Miss Z (5), and Short Speech (2) are recommended. A straight win bet on Low Euro Cat (1) at 3-1 is the recommended play.

Selections

Win: Low Euro Cat (1) Place: Mo Ta (4) Show: Miss Z (5)

RACE 6 — Post 10:40 — 1210f | D | M | Md 10000 | BUM | Purse $15,000

Nine horses enter the starting gate for this $10,000 maiden claiming sprint at approximately six furlongs on the main track for older fillies and mares. A nine-horse maiden claimer at this level is among the most unpredictable races on any card, and exotic wagering is emphasized over straight win betting here.

Pace Analysis

When I Saw You (4) at 2-1 and Sum Up The Silver (5) at 3-1 figure to be the primary contenders. Off The Payroll (3) at 4-1 adds another layer to the pace picture. With a nine-horse field, traffic will be a real factor, and the pace scenario is harder to read than the morning line suggests. Classy Tiger (1) may show early speed from the rail, which would add to what could be a contentious opening half. If multiple horses vie for the lead, the closers from outside posts could benefit.

Key Contenders

When I Saw You (4) is the morning-line favorite at 2-1 from trainer Tom Gardipy Jr., who also has Off The Payroll (3) in this race, giving the barn a two-horse entry. S. Chickeness gets the mount on the favorite. Gardipy Jr. choosing to split mounts between When I Saw You (4) and Off The Payroll (3) suggests the barn has a clear preference for the 2-1 shot. From post four in a nine-horse field, When I Saw You (4) has a manageable position and should be able to track the early pace before making a run.

Sum Up The Silver (5) represents the Jason Homer stable at 3-1 with Neville Stephenson up. Homer has had entries on this card in Races 1 and 7 as well, showing an active meet. At 3-1, Sum Up The Silver (5) is a legitimate value alternative to the favorite, and Stephenson is a solid rider.

Secondary Choices

Off The Payroll (3) is the Gardipy Jr. barn's second entry at 4-1 with Tyrone Nelson up. While the stable clearly prefers When I Saw You (4), Off The Payroll (3) at 4-1 offers value if the two horses work in tandem to set the pace or if Off The Payroll (3) proves to be the more talented of the pair. Nelson is capable of stealing a race in soft company.

Classy Tiger (1) is one of two Pruitt barn entries (MOONSHINE BOOGIE at 9 is the other) in this race. Shavon Townsend takes the mount on Classy Tiger (1) from the prime rail post. At 6-1, Classy Tiger (1) offers fair value, and Townsend will have plenty of opportunities to put this horse on the lead from the rail. If Classy Tiger (1) can steal clean fractions from the inside, this horse could be a live longshot at 6-1 morning-line odds.

Longshots

Dress Me Up (2) from Jared Brown's barn at 10-1 with Kerron Khelawan up is an interesting play given that Brown typically places horses well. At 10-1, Dress Me Up (2) could offer value if the pace gets scrambled and Khelawan finds a clear path. This is a trifecta inclusion worth considering.

Witt's Dubai Gal (6) at 15-1 comes from Jerry Gourneau's barn with R. Cumberbatch up. Gourneau's longshots have hit occasionally on this circuit, and at 15-1 this horse merits a small exotic play.

Cloudsinmycoffee (7) at 15-1 is from the Tiffany Husbands barn with Matthew Bennett up. Husbands has Sgt. Filkow (5) as a legitimate contender in Race 4, and this entry figures to be significantly less competitive. Include in superfectas only.

Moonshine Boogie (9) is the Pruitt barn's second entry at 25-1 with Sven Balroop up. In a nine-horse field, a 25-1 shot from the outside post has very limited prospects, even with a capable jockey.

Fast Movin Train (8) from the Sherry Laing barn at 30-1 with Arthur Budhu up is the biggest longshot in the field. Include in superfecta exotics only for wide coverage.

Betting Strategy

In a nine-horse maiden claimer, the best approach is to structure trifectas and superfectas rather than focusing on win betting. Use When I Saw You (4) and Sum Up The Silver (5) as the top two, with Off The Payroll (3), Classy Tiger (1), and Dress Me Up (2) filling in the third and fourth spots. The Gardipy two-horse entry creates a natural same-race trifecta play. A small win bet on Sum Up The Silver (5) at 3-1 is reasonable if you want a win play at a decent price.

Selections

Win: When I Saw You (4) Place: Sum Up The Silver (5) Show: Off The Payroll (3)

RACE 7 — Post 11:05 — 1650f | D | AO | OClm 17500b | BUN | Purse $19,000

The seven-race card concludes with the day's feature, an optional claiming event at $17,500 going one mile and three-sixteenths on the main track. Seven older horses will test each other at the highest class level offered today. The route distance and the open optional claiming condition bring out a more seasoned group, and the race is headlined by two co-favorites at 2-1 in Judo (1) and Chief Brady (7).

Pace Analysis

Judo (1) and Chief Brady (7) are both installed at 2-1, and the pace scenario here will largely depend on which of these horses prefers to set the pace versus stalk. At a mile and three-sixteenths on a tight oval, pace is critical. Falsely Accused (6) at 6-1 from the Homer stable could be a factor in the pace, while Foothills Blvd. (4) at 4-1 may look to sit in tracking position. With seven horses going long, the first half-mile will define the race, and horses that range four or five lengths back while the leaders set a moderate pace will have the best chance to close powerfully in the stretch.

If Judo (1) breaks well from the inside post and establishes an uncontested lead, the Wendy Anderson trainee will be very difficult to run down. Chief Brady (7) from the outside post with Neville Stephenson will need a perfect trip to reel in Judo (1) if it gets away cleanly.

Key Contenders

Judo (1) from trainer Wendy Anderson draws the rail, which is highly advantageous in a route at Assiniboia. Sven Balroop gets the mount, and with the inside post, Judo (1) will save ground on every turn. At 2-1 morning line, the horse is respected equally with Chief Brady (7), but the post position edge tips this race in Judo (1)'s favor. Anderson's horses have been conditioned well through the meet, and Balroop has shown an ability to save ground on the inside in routes.

Chief Brady (7) closes the field from the outside post for trainer Jerry Gourneau. Neville Stephenson takes the mount on this 2-1 co-favorite. From the seven post going 1650 furlongs, Chief Brady (7) will use extra ground on the first turn, which is a meaningful disadvantage against a horse with rail position. Gourneau's record in route races on this circuit is competitive, and Stephenson is capable of rating a horse patiently. Chief Brady (7) may need to use early position aggressively to avoid being buried wide all the way around.

Secondary Choices

Foothills Blvd. (4) is trained by Ralph Zaft and draws post four with Roger Hewitt up. At 4-1, Foothills Blvd. (4) represents strong value as a stalker that can sit behind the pace and produce a late charge. The four post in a seven-horse field at this distance is near ideal, allowing this horse to rate in mid-pack and save ground on the turns. Zaft is a respected conditioner for this level, and Hewitt knows the oval well.

Falsely Accused (6) from the Homer barn at 6-1 with Shavon Townsend up is another logical value play. Homer has been active all day on this card, and Falsely Accused (6) at 6-1 gives bettors a price in a race dominated by two co-favorites. If Falsely Accused (6) can stalk the leaders through the first mile and produce a sustained run in the stretch, this horse could upset the co-favorites. Townsend is comfortable at route distances on this circuit.

Longshots

Nu Soup For Baby (3) at 15-1 from trainer Brian Phillips with Damario Bynoe up is a significant longshot but has a trainer less familiar to daily Assiniboia bettors. At this price, exotic inclusion is warranted.

Frosty Blue (2) at 20-1 from the Richard A. Wise barn with Antonio Whitehall up is an interesting case. Whitehall has been one of the busiest jockeys all card, and even on a 20-1 shot, his experience in the irons could produce a surprise. Include in superfecta coverage.

Pay My Way (5) at 25-1 from trainer Charlene Miller with Kerron Khelawan up is the second-biggest longshot in the field. Miller has limited activity on today's card, and Pay My Way (5) at 25-1 faces an enormous task. Superfecta only.

Betting Strategy

Race 7 is the ideal race for structured exacta and trifecta wagering. Key Judo (1) on top in exactas with Foothills Blvd. (4), Chief Brady (7), and Falsely Accused (6). A trifecta box using Judo (1), Foothills Blvd. (4), and Chief Brady (7) at a $1 base covers the most likely outcome at a reasonable cost. Also consider a win bet on Foothills Blvd. (4) at 4-1 as a value alternative to the co-favorites.

Selections

Win: Judo (1) Place: Foothills Blvd. (4) Show: Chief Brady (7)

Jockey Notes and Insights

Antonio Whitehall is among the busiest riders on today's card, picking up mounts in Races 1, 2, 3, and 7. Whitehall has been consistent throughout the Assiniboia meet and is particularly effective in sprints from inside posts where he can establish position early. His mount on Maximum Uproar (1) in Race 2 gives him a prime setup from the rail in the maiden special weight, and his work on Kikilove (3) in Race 1 and Free Maker (3) in Race 3 puts him in competitive positions. In the feature, Whitehall takes what appears to be a significant longshot in Frosty Blue (2), which suggests his book was full earlier and this was a late pick-up.

Rachaad Knights carries four mounts today across Races 1, 3, 4, and 6. Knights is one of the stronger riders on the grounds, and his pick-up on Shamayim (6) in Race 3 for the Taphorn barn is noteworthy. In Race 4, Knights is assigned Saturdays Babe (2) at 15-1, which is below his talent level — suggesting his best opportunities today are in Races 1, 3, and 6. His presence on Classy Tiger (1) in Race 6 gives the Pruitt barn's rail horse a legitimate chance.

Shavon Townsend is another high-volume rider today with five mounts across the card. Townsend's best opportunity may be Silver Spiced (7) in Race 4 and Miss Z (5) in Race 5, where she gets horses with pace-stalking profiles that fit her riding style. Townsend is also aboard Play Free Bird (4) in Race 1 and Classy Tiger (1)'s barnmate situation in Race 6.

Kerron Khelawan rides for the Jared Brown barn on several key mounts, including Ralph's Gift (3) in Race 4 and She's A Maneater (2) in Race 2. Khelawan has been a reliable performer for Brown throughout the meet. His assignment on Pay My Way (5) at 25-1 in Race 7 is an outlier in an otherwise quality book for the day.

Sven Balroop has quality mounts in Races 1, 2, 5, 6, and 7. His most important mount today is Judo (1) in the feature, where the inside post gives him an immediate structural advantage. Balroop's experience at Assiniboia makes him dangerous on any horse with rail position in a route.

Neville Stephenson pilots Chief Brady (7) in the feature for Gourneau, which is his marquee ride of the day. Stephenson also picks up Red Dirt Alley (1) in Race 4 and Sum Up The Silver (5) in Race 6, giving him a productive book.

Trainer Notes and Insights

Lise Pruitt is the most active trainer on today's card, with horses in Races 1, 4, 5, 6, and 7 — fielding multiple entries in several of those races. Pruitt's two-entry strategy in Race 4 (SHOCKING MALICE at 4 and SILVER SPICED at 7) and Race 6 (CLASSY TIGER at 1 and MOONSHINE BOOGIE at 9) gives her barn coverage on both ends of the pace spectrum. Pruitt has operated at Assiniboia for multiple seasons and is adept at placing horses appropriately in the claiming ranks. Her best chance today may be Hardly Mischievous (5) in Race 1, where the co-favorite status with Rachaad Knights up is a strong combination.

Jerry Gourneau is the second-most active trainer today with runners in Races 3, 4, 6, and 7. Gourneau's most significant horse is Chief Brady (7) in the feature at 2-1. He also sends out Oregon County (5) in Race 3 and Red Dirt Alley (1) in Race 4. Gourneau has a competitive barn and tends to keep his horses sharp into the late weeks of the meet.

Jared Brown fields runners in Races 2, 4, and 6. Brown's barn has been professional and consistent at Assiniboia, and his two most important horses today are She's A Maneater (2) in Race 2 and Ralph's Gift (3) in Race 4. Brown maiden runners, like She's A Maneater (2), tend to arrive prepared.

Robert Maybin has three horses in today's action, including two in Race 1. The two-horse entry in Race 1 with Princess Aleska (1) and Norma No (2) gives Maybin a strong hand, and knowing which of the two horses is the barn's preferred choice is a key piece of information. The 6-1 vs. 2-1 morning line suggests Norma No (2) is the stable's choice.

Mike Taphorn saddles Onemorsteptoheaven (5) in Race 2 and Shamayim (6) in Race 3, and both horses carry competitive morning-line odds. Taphorn's record with Rachaad Knights aboard Shamayim (6) in Race 3 is a positive angle for bettors.

Tom Gardipy Jr. runs two horses in Race 6, When I Saw You (4) and Off The Payroll (3), suggesting the barn has a strong opinion about this maiden claimer. The fact that the 2-1 shot gets S. Chickeness and the 4-1 shot gets Tyrone Nelson reflects the stable's hierarchy. Gardipy is a competitive conditioner on this circuit.

Tiffany Husbands has two entries on the card, including the probable race favorite Sgt. Filkow (5) in Race 4. This horse is installed at 1-1 and represents the stable's best opportunity of the day. Husbands' Cloudsinmycoffee (7) in Race 6 is a distant second priority for the barn.

Jason Homer sends out runners in Races 1, 6, and 7. His most interesting play is Falsely Accused (6) in the feature at 6-1, which offers value in a race dominated by two 2-1 choices.

Best Wagering Strategies and Value Plays

The overall card at Assiniboia on September 14 leans heavily toward exotic wagering rather than aggressive win betting, given the number of heavily favored morning-line choices at or near even money in several races. Here are the recommended strategies race by race, with a focus on value.

In Race 1, the three-way co-favorite situation at 2-1 creates a compelling exacta opportunity. Box Norma No (2), Kikilove (3), and Hardly Mischievous (5) in an exacta for $6 at $1 each combination. Add Princess Aleska (1) to a trifecta box with the three favorites for wide coverage.

In Race 2, the maiden special weight offers one of the better betting opportunities on the card. She's A Maneater (2) over Maximum Uproar (1) in the exacta is the primary play. Key Honourable Mention (6) underneath both in trifectas for an overlay if the pace collapses up front.

In Race 3, the value play is Gallant Oak (2) at 3-1 to win. Exactas using Gallant Oak (2) over Oregon County (5) and Shamayim (6) are attractively priced. A $1 trifecta box with Gallant Oak (2), Oregon County (5), Shamayim (6), and Free Maker (3) costs $24 and covers the most likely combinations.

In Race 4, the best strategy is to beat the 1-1 favorite Sgt. Filkow (5). A win bet on Ralph's Gift (3) at 3-1 is the top play. Exactas keying Ralph's Gift (3) over Sgt. Filkow (5) and Red Dirt Alley (1) return significant value if the favorite weakens late.

In Race 5, the rail post advantage of Low Euro Cat (1) at 3-1 makes a win bet compelling. The exacta using Low Euro Cat (1) over Mo Ta (4) is the best value on the card in terms of a two-horse combination that could return a meaningful price.

In Race 6, the nine-horse maiden claimer is a trifecta and superfecta race. Structure $1 trifecta tickets using When I Saw You (4) and Sum Up The Silver (5) on top, with Off The Payroll (3), Classy Tiger (1), and Dress Me Up (2) in the third slot. A wide superfecta using all five of these horses in combination at $0.10 per line is affordable and covers the range of outcomes.

In Race 7, the feature is best approached with an exacta box using Judo (1), Foothills Blvd. (4), and Chief Brady (7). A $1 exacta box of these three horses costs $6 and covers the most likely exacta combinations. Add Falsely Accused (6) for a trifecta at a small cost. A win bet on Foothills Blvd. (4) at 4-1 is the recommended value play in the feature.

For Pick 5 bettors beginning with Race 3, the recommended single in each leg is Gallant Oak (2) in Race 3, Ralph's Gift (3) in Race 4, Low Euro Cat (1) in Race 5, When I Saw You (4) in Race 6, and Judo (1) in Race 7. This five-single Pick 5 combination costs $1 per ticket and offers a strong overlay if all five horses win, given that none of the five are at even money. Players seeking more coverage should double up in Race 4 with Sgt. Filkow (5) and in Race 7 with Chief Brady (7) for a cost of $4 per ticket.

The best value single bet of the day is Low Euro Cat (1) in Race 5 at 3-1 with the rail post at a short sprint distance. The most structured exotic plays are in Races 2, 6, and 7. Good luck at the windows.
