Race Day Overview — Colonial Downs, Sunday August 30, 2026

Colonial Downs closes out its late-summer weekend with a full nine-race Sunday card, following a busy Saturday that saw Saratoga dominate the national racing conversation with Travers Day. Today's program at the New Kent, Virginia oval is a strong local-level card that features a mix of turf routes, a pair of dirt routes, and several turf sprints on the Jimmy Winkfield course. The card spans claiming, maiden, allowance, and maiden optional claiming conditions, with the headliner being the $72,000 allowance in Race 8 on the long turf course.

Trainer Brittany Russell, who made headlines Thursday when Piggybunz became the first winner for freshman sire Happy Saver at this meet, is well-represented today with entries in Races 3, 4, 5, and 8. Cherie DeVaux, who sent out two major stakes contenders at Saratoga on Saturday, has a Colonial entry in Race 8 as well. The presence of shipper connections from outfits like Mark Casse, Brendan Walsh, H. Graham Motion, and Claude McGaughey III in the featured allowance race gives Race 8 an elevated profile for a Sunday Colonial card.

The Colonial Downs turf course continues to be one of the best-maintained grass surfaces in the Mid-Atlantic region, and the track has been a magnet for connections who want to develop turf horses in a low-pressure, quality-surface environment. Today's nine-race card gets underway at 12:15 PM Eastern with a maiden turf sprint.

Weather and Track Conditions

Sunday, August 30, 2026, brings partly cloudy skies to the New Kent area with temperatures in the upper 80s Fahrenheit and humidity levels running high, as is typical for late August in coastal Virginia. The forecast calls for an isolated afternoon thunderstorm possible after 4:00 PM, which could affect the final two races if a cell moves through the area. Winds are light out of the southwest at approximately 8-10 mph.

The Colonial Downs turf course is currently listed as firm and is expected to remain so through at least the first seven races of the card. Should afternoon showers arrive, the course could soften to good by post time for Race 8 or Race 9. Trainers with horses that prefer softer going could benefit from any change in conditions. The main track is listed as fast and is expected to remain so throughout the day regardless of weather.

Track Bias and Post Position Analysis

Colonial Downs is widely recognized as one of the premier turf courses in North America, featuring a sprawling layout that rewards horses who can handle a true grass surface. The Jimmy Winkfield turf course plays fairly, though in longer routes of 1870 furlongs (approximately 1 1/8 miles on turf) the rail has historically been favorable when the going is firm, as horses can save ground effectively around both turns.

In turf sprints at 1100 furlongs (approximately 6.5 furlongs on the grass), pace scenarios play a significant role. Speed from inside posts can be dangerous, as the run to the first turn is short and traffic can develop quickly for outside horses. However, turf sprints here also tend to set up for closers when fields are large, as the short run to the first turn compresses the pace.

On the dirt at 1320 furlongs (one mile), Colonial's main track plays relatively fair with no pronounced post position advantage. Early speed is respected on the dirt surface, but the mile distance allows closers to get involved in the stretch.

In the maiden turf sprint that opens the card at 1210 furlongs, inside and stalking positions have historically been advantageous on the Colonial grass. For the two-turn marathon at 1870 furlongs on turf, rail-saving trips from posts 1 through 4 are at a premium on a firm surface.

RACE 1 — Post 12:15 ET — 1210f | Turf | Maiden | Md 16000 | Fillies & Mares | Purse $40,000

Pace Analysis

This is a 10-horse maiden claiming sprint on the turf at approximately 6 furlongs on the grass for fillies and mares. The pace figures to be contested, with Airbrush (POST 2) and Fortune Hill (POST 5) both carrying early-speed profiles in a field where few horses will likely want to take on a grinding, wire-to-wire role. The short run from the gate to the first turn at Colonial means outside posts face immediate disadvantages in a sprint, putting horses in posts 1 through 5 at an advantage at the start. Expect a contested early pace that could set up for a closer or stalker to pounce in the lane.

Key Contenders

Airbrush (POST 2) is the morning line favorite at 2-1 for Lacey Gaudet, one of the meet's more active and productive trainers. Gaudet has shown a strong feel for placing horses in spots where they can win, and a 2-1 price in a 10-horse maiden turf sprint suggests the connections have legitimate confidence. The inside post is ideal for a turf sprint at Colonial. Handicappers point to Airbrush as the horse to beat based on the combination of trainer form and post position advantage.

Whaleaxe (POST 4) at 3-1 is trained by Sarah Nagle and gets Sonny Leon in the irons. Leon has been one of the more active riders at this Colonial meeting and is capable of stealing a race with a front-running or stalking trip. Post 4 sets up perfectly for a pressing or stalking position in this sprint, and the 3-1 morning line represents fair value if this horse has underlying ability.

Fortune Hill (POST 5) at 3-1 is trained by Irvin Flores and ridden by Jose Vargas, who is among the more reliable jockeys on the Colonial circuit. Fortune Hill shares the second choice in the morning line and appears to have early speed. The middle draw from post 5 is workable, and Vargas will likely be aggressive from the gate to secure a good position on the rail or tucked just off it.

Secondary Choices

City Of Bling (POST 6) at 5-1 for Jeremiah O'Dwyer and Johan Rosado could represent value at a price. O'Dwyer is a trainer with some Mid-Atlantic credentials, and this filly is in a spot that suggests she is close to being ready to win. The post outside the main contenders is a slight concern in a turf sprint, but in a 10-horse field the impact is manageable.

Little Boss Man (POST 3) at 6-1 for Karen Dennehy Godsey and Samuel Marin splits the two morning line favorites and gets a stalking position in what should be a moderate pace scenario. Godsey has been competitive at Colonial, and Marin is a capable rider who can rate a horse in traffic.

Longshots

Chucky Our Law (POST 9) at 20-1 for Gerard Galligan is too wide in a turf sprint to be a serious winning candidate, but could be live in exotics if the pace collapses early and closers are rewarded. Taylor Kingsley picks up the mount.

Irish Divo (POST 1) at 30-1 for Diana McClure has the rail in a turf sprint, which is theoretically the best post, but the extreme morning line odds suggest connections see limited chances. G. Larrosa gets the call.

Elmington (POST 7) at 30-1 for Kathleen Hamlin and Tais Lyapustina is too far outside and too lightly regarded to factor in the win pool.

Broadside Salvo (POST 8) at 30-1 for Susan Cooney and D.E. Centeno is another longshot facing a difficult post in a sprint. Centeno is an experienced hand but has little to work with here.

Andies Pistolero (POST 10) at 30-1 for Leanne Hester and Ubardo Casique is the widest draw in the field and the extreme price reflects the challenge. Will need pace help and significant improvement.

Betting Strategy

This race is best approached as a win/place on Airbrush (POST 2), who has the post, the trainer, and the backing reflected in the morning line. Use Whaleaxe (POST 4) and Fortune Hill (POST 5) underneath in exactas and trifectas. City Of Bling (POST 6) is a live price for the trifecta bottom.

Selections

Win: Airbrush (POST 2) Place: Whaleaxe (POST 4) Show: Fortune Hill (POST 5)

RACE 2 — Post 12:45 ET — 1320f | Dirt | Claiming | Clm 16000n3x | Fillies & Mares | Purse $34,500

Pace Analysis

A one-mile dirt claiming route for fillies and mares who have not won three races. This is a straightforward class drop and placement scenario race where pace will be determined early. With Costa Amalfitana (POST 5) and Tasty Time (POST 7) both drawing attention as co-morning line favorites at 2-1, the early fractions could be honest if either horse has early-speed tendencies. Lady Zeta (POST 2) at 3-1 likely figures in the pace picture as well. A competitive early pace would benefit Valiant Honor (POST 6) or Humor Sense (POST 1) as closer-types if they are configured that way.

Key Contenders

Costa Amalfitana (POST 5) at 2-1 for Carlos Munoz and Luis Fuenmayor is one of the two co-favorites and looks like a serious contender from the five hole in a mile dirt route. Munoz has been active at Colonial, and Fuenmayor is capable aboard dirt runners. The mid-post draw is neutral and allows for flexibility in trip.

Tasty Time (POST 7) at 2-1 for Kenneth Cox and Jose Vargas shares the favorite price from the outside post in a seven-horse field. Cox is a competent trainer in this jurisdiction, and Vargas riding a favorite from the outside post in a small field is not a major concern at a mile on dirt. This horse deserves equal consideration with Costa Amalfitana.

Lady Zeta (POST 2) at 3-1 for Lacey Gaudet and Tais Lyapustina is a prime secondary contender. Gaudet, who also has the morning line favorite in Race 1, is clearly in strong form at this Colonial meeting, and the inside post at a mile on dirt is no disadvantage. Lyapustina is an emerging rider on the Colonial circuit and has been competitive.

Secondary Choices

Valiant Honor (POST 6) at 4-1 for Jose Francisco D'Angelo and Samuel Marin is the pick of the secondary options at a price. D'Angelo has horses ready to fire, and a 4-1 morning line price suggests a solid chance. Marin is capable of a winning ride.

Humor Sense (POST 1) at 8-1 for Gerard Ochoa and D.E. Centeno has the rail in a one-mile dirt route. Ochoa also has Belly Dance (POST 4) in this race, giving him two bites of the apple. The barn appears to be leaning on Costa Amalfitana — wait, note that Costa Amalfitana is for Munoz, not Ochoa. Ochoa's double-entry of Humor Sense and Belly Dance creates interesting stable strategy, and Centeno typically gets the call on the preferred entry.

Longshots

Ran The Red (POST 3) at 12-1 for Kevin Joy and H.A. Karamanos is worth a look in exotics at a price. Joy has been patient with horses and Karamanos is an established Mid-Atlantic jockey who knows how to find a lane.

Belly Dance (POST 4) at 30-1 for Gerard Ochoa and Ubardo Casique is the second Ochoa entry and appears to be the non-preferred stable runner based on the morning line disparity. Difficult to recommend in a betting capacity.

Betting Strategy

This race sets up as a three-horse battle. The most logical approach is a win bet on Costa Amalfitana (POST 5) or Tasty Time (POST 7) depending on how the odds settle, with exacta boxes covering both favorites with Lady Zeta (POST 2). Include Valiant Honor (POST 6) in trifectas as the price horse.

Selections

Win: Costa Amalfitana (POST 5) Place: Lady Zeta (POST 2) Show: Tasty Time (POST 7)

RACE 3 — Post 1:14 ET — 1210f | Dirt | Maiden Special Weight | All Ages Fillies | Purse $87,500

Pace Analysis

The highest purse of the card for maiden fillies at six furlongs on the dirt at a quality maiden special weight level. With Talking Foolish (POST 5) and Ayni (POST 7) sharing the 2-1 morning line, this race has a clear focus. The pace figures to be honest in an eight-horse maiden field with several lightly raced or first-time starters potentially in the mix. The six-furlong dirt sprint will see the contenders sorted out quickly in the opening quarter, and the key will be which of the favorites can navigate the early phases most efficiently.

Key Contenders

Talking Foolish (POST 5) at 2-1 for Hamilton Smith and Taylor Kingsley is a co-morning line favorite and draws from the five hole in an eight-horse field. Smith is a well-regarded trainer in this region, and Kingsley is a capable rider with meet experience at Colonial. Handicappers have this filly near the top of their lists based on the trainer's prep work and the horse's underlying figures.

Ayni (POST 7) at 2-1 for Michael Trombetta and Samuel Marin is the other co-morning line favorite and comes from a barn that regularly ships quality horses to Colonial for development. Trombetta has established a strong reputation for bringing horses to their first win, particularly fillies, and Marin has been among the more effective riders on the Colonial circuit this summer. The outside post in a six-furlong dirt sprint is workable but will require Marin to find room quickly.

Hugh's Legend (POST 6) at 4-1 for Phil Schoenthal and Jevian Toledo is the third choice and represents legitimate competition. Toledo is one of the most experienced riders in this field and regularly partners with Schoenthal for good results. The six post is in the heart of the field and gives Toledo options.

Secondary Choices

Silver Strings (POST 4) at 5-1 for Brittany Russell and Mychel Sanchez is a solid secondary play. Russell has been lighting up the Colonial meet, and Sanchez is a dependable rider who can get the best out of a filly in a maiden sprint. The four post is clean and inside the favored runners.

Legend's Girl (POST 2) at 8-1 for Jose Corrales and Raul Mena could be a live price. Mena is an accomplished rider with broader circuit experience, and the inside post draws a favorable trip scenario. At 8-1, this filly offers value if she is ready to fire.

Longshots

Motocross (POST 1) at 12-1 for Madison Meyers and Kevin Gomez has the rail, which is a useful position in a dirt sprint, but the morning line suggests connections do not have high expectations. Meyers is active at Colonial and has had some meet success.

Divine Drive (POST 8) at 20-1 for Eduardo Azpurua Jr. and Jorge Ruiz is too wide and too lightly regarded to factor in the win pool.

Spun For Joy (POST 3) at 30-1 for C. Beale Payne and Jose Vargas is a longshot with little morning line support. Vargas gives any horse a competent ride but has limited material to work with.

Betting Strategy

The 2-1 co-favorites set up well for a two-horse exacta box. Use Talking Foolish (POST 5) and Ayni (POST 7) in a box exacta as the foundation, and add Hugh's Legend (POST 6) and Silver Strings (POST 4) in trifecta combinations. Legend's Girl (POST 2) is worth a small inclusion at 8-1 in trifecta bottom slots.

Selections

Win: Ayni (POST 7) Place: Talking Foolish (POST 5) Show: Hugh's Legend (POST 6)

RACE 4 — Post 1:42 ET — 1100f | Turf | Maiden Optional Claiming | All Ages Fillies | Purse $55,000

Pace Analysis

A 13-horse field for maiden optional claiming fillies at approximately 6.5 furlongs on the turf makes this the largest field on the card and the most complex pace scenario. Large turf sprint fields at Colonial create compression at the first turn and often produce messy, contested early fractions that can favor closers. With Tapit Nitro (POST 5) at 2-1 as the clear morning line choice, the pace scenario will partly depend on how aggressive the surrounding runners are. Occupy (POST 6) at 4-1 appears to have the class profile to rate and run on.

Key Contenders

Tapit Nitro (POST 5) at 2-1 for Rohan Crichton and Diego Herrera is the clear morning line favorite in a large, competitive field. The name carries commercial pedigree interest, and Crichton is an active trainer who gets horses fit. Herrera has met success at Colonial and will look to secure a good position on the rail or just off it from the five post. Handicappers favor this filly based on the trainer's current form.

Occupy (POST 6) at 4-1 for Brittany Russell and Jevian Toledo is the second choice and comes from the barn that has been dominant throughout this Colonial meeting. Russell's horses have been arriving fit and sharp, and Toledo is one of the most accomplished riders on the grounds. The six post is workable in a turf sprint.

Fib (POST 7) at 5-1 for Joseph Orseno and Samuel Marin represents a barn that regularly ships to Colonial for turf sprint opportunities. Orseno is a quality trainer from the New York circuit who has enjoyed Colonial success in past years. Marin from post 7 in a 13-horse field will need a clean break, but at 5-1 this filly is worth including in exotics.

Secondary Choices

Spur Of The Moment (POST 1) at 5-1 for Cody Durr and Jareth Loveberry gets the rail in a 13-horse turf sprint, which is a prime real estate assignment. Loveberry is a serious talent who regularly makes the trip to Colonial for choice mounts. Inside position in a large turf sprint field at Colonial is a significant asset, and this filly deserves respect at 5-1.

Voladora (POST 8) at 6-1 for Richard Sillaman and Xavier Perez offers value outside the core group. Sillaman has some Colonial experience and Perez is a capable rider who can navigate traffic.

Longshots

Air Kiss (POST 2) at 10-1 for Michael Trombetta and Ismerio Villalobos is trained by a quality barn and should not be dismissed entirely. Trombetta also has Ayni (POST 7) in Race 3, demonstrating the stable's commitment to this Colonial stop.

Worryaboutyourself (POST 9) at 20-1 for Shane Meyers and Gavin Ashton is a double-digit price in a wide post.

Susan B (POST 4) at 20-1 for Michael Stidham and Sonny Leon is notable for the quality of trainer and jockey engagement but the morning line price suggests this filly is not yet ready to win. Stidham is an accomplished national trainer.

Long Shot Lady (POST 11) at 20-1 for Jorge Duarte Jr. and Johan Rosado has a wide draw that makes winning in a large turf sprint field extremely difficult.

La Loba (POST 13) at 20-1 for Jose Juan Vazquez and Ismerio Villalobos draws the worst post in the field and faces an uphill battle. Villalobos holds two mounts in this race (Air Kiss (POST 2) and La Loba (POST 13)) — check scratches, as a jockey cannot ride two horses in the same race. One of these connections likely changes.

Midnight Laugh (POST 3) at 30-1 for Faustio Gutierrez and Jorge Ruiz is a longshot on the inside path.

Diamond Deb (POST 10) at 30-1 for Abraham Gardea and Cipriano Gil is a price outside the main contenders.

Princess Eliana (POST 12) at 30-1 for Jose Juan Vazquez and Luis Fuenmayor is another Vazquez entry at the extreme outside.

Betting Strategy

In a 13-horse turf sprint, the value lies in using multiple horses on top in exactas and structuring trifectas with a broad bottom. Focus on Tapit Nitro (POST 5) and Occupy (POST 6) as the primary winning tickets, with Spur Of The Moment (POST 1) as a key live price based on post position. Fib (POST 7) is the exotic play at 5-1.

Selections

Win: Tapit Nitro (POST 5) Place: Occupy (POST 6) Show: Spur Of The Moment (POST 1)

RACE 5 — Post 2:14 ET — 1320f | Dirt | Maiden Claiming | Fillies & Mares | Purse $28,000

Pace Analysis

A one-mile dirt maiden claimer for fillies and mares with a 10-horse field. Scrutinator (POST 3) at even money is the heavy morning line favorite, which suggests this filly has either superior figures or a significant class edge in this field. When a horse is installed at 1-1 in a 10-horse maiden dirt claimer, the field is typically conceding ground. The pace will likely be set up by whatever horses have early inclinations, with Scrutinator (POST 3) able to rate or press depending on the flow.

Key Contenders

Scrutinator (POST 3) at 1-1 for Brittany Russell and Jevian Toledo is the dominant morning line choice. Russell's barn has been unstoppable at this Colonial meet, and assigning Toledo — one of the best available riders — to an even-money favorite underscores the stable's confidence. From post 3 in a mile dirt race, this filly should find a clean trip. The heavy support in the morning line often reflects insider confidence in this class of race.

Ay Papi (POST 1) at 4-1 for Rohan Crichton and Nik Juarez is the clear second choice and gets the rail in a mile dirt route. Crichton is an active trainer at Colonial and Juarez is a capable rider who can take advantage of an inside draw. At 4-1, this is the most logical challenger to the favorite.

Chief Morter (POST 10) at 8-1 for Kevin Joy and Jareth Loveberry represents significant rider quality at a price. Loveberry rarely wastes trips on horses that have no chance, and the 8-1 morning line price in a maiden claimer suggests there is some form behind this horse worth investigating. Joy trains a competitive stable.

Secondary Choices

Boundless Skies (POST 6) at 8-1 for Jorge Duarte Jr. and Taylor Kingsley shares the price with Chief Morter and represents a middle-post runner with a capable rider. Kingsley has been increasingly active at this meeting.

Next Level Beau (POST 5) at 10-1 for Abraham Gardea and C. Montalvo is a mid-price option that could surface in exotic plays.

Longshots

Sweet Spy (POST 2) at 20-1 for A. Ferris Allen III and Sonny Leon is notable for the rider engagement. Leon on a 20-1 in a maiden claimer suggests the morning line may be generous relative to what Allen's barn actually thinks of this filly.

Royces Ride (POST 4) at 30-1 for James Hunt and Dick Cardenas is a longshot that will need everything to go right.

Gran Corredor (POST 7) at 30-1 for Robert Werneth and Samuel Marin is another long price with limited prospects.

Keep On Chargin (POST 8) at 30-1 for Karen Dennehy Godsey and Ubardo Casique is a deep longshot.

S B Hay Lender (POST 9) at 30-1 for Franklin Smith Jr. and Jose Vargas is a Vargas mount worth a throwaway inclusion in large multi-race wagers.

Betting Strategy

The 1-1 morning line price on Scrutinator (POST 3) makes a straight win bet mathematically unappealing unless you are building a foundation for multi-race wagers. Use Scrutinator (POST 3) as the key in exactas underneath Ay Papi (POST 1) and Chief Morter (POST 10) as live price threats. For multi-race purposes, Scrutinator (POST 3) is the single.

Selections

Win: Scrutinator (POST 3) Place: Ay Papi (POST 1) Show: Chief Morter (POST 10)

RACE 6 — Post 2:46 ET — 1870f | Turf | Maiden Claiming | Fillies & Mares | Purse $45,000

Pace Analysis

An 11-horse maiden claiming route on the turf at approximately 1 1/8 miles for fillies and mares. This distance heavily favors horses with tactical speed or the ability to rate comfortably in the middle of the field before making a run turning for home. Timestream (POST 8) at 2-1 is the morning line choice and would appear to be the class of this field based on trainer and rider quality. The 1870-furlong distance on Colonial's turf course plays to horses with stamina, and a firm course further rewards horses that can save ground.

Key Contenders

Timestream (POST 8) at 2-1 for Thomas Molloy and Samuel Marin is the morning line favorite. Marin is one of the more active and successful riders at this Colonial meeting, and being assigned the 2-1 shot in an 11-horse maiden turf route suggests the connections believe strongly in this filly's chances. The eight post in a route at 1870 furlongs is manageable if Marin can angle down toward the rail after the break.

Grey Bull (POST 5) at 4-1 for Jamie Ness and Mychel Sanchez is the second choice in terms of overall appeal. Ness is an established trainer who has targeted the Colonial turf meet successfully in recent years, and Sanchez is a highly competent rider who knows how to place horses effectively in long turf routes. The five post is near-ideal for a patient trip on the Colonial turf layout.

Terre Haute (POST 9) at 4-1 for John Ennis and Johan Rosado shares the second-choice price with Grey Bull and comes from a barn that has shown competence in maiden turf routes. Rosado is an active Colonial rider who can make the most of a late-running position.

Secondary Choices

Dynadee (POST 4) at 5-1 for Mike Dini and Sonny Leon offers value from a clean post on the inside half of the field. Dini is a Mid-Atlantic trainer who has been productive at Colonial in past meetings, and Leon has been riding aggressively throughout this summer stand.

Agendum (POST 2) at 6-1 for Michael Stidham and Jevian Toledo draws the eye based on trainer quality. Stidham is an accomplished conditioner and Toledo is a top-tier rider. The second post in a long turf route is favorable, allowing for a rail trip or a stalking position just off the lead.

Longshots

My Kinda Ghaiy (POST 10) at 10-1 for Barry Foley and Taylor Kingsley is a double-digit price worth a small exotic inclusion from the outside post.

Plenty On Tap (POST 1) at 15-1 for Tim Woolley and Jorge Ruiz has the rail, which is theoretically advantageous in a long turf route, but the morning line price reflects limited winning prospects.

Blame It On Linda (POST 11) at 20-1 for Teresa Connelly and Jorge Panaijo is the widest draw in the field and at the extreme morning line price.

Modern Master (POST 6) at 30-1 for Neil Morris and Jareth Loveberry is notable for the Loveberry engagement at 30-1. Loveberry often has reasons for accepting mounts on long-priced horses, so keep an eye on any odds movement.

Now Teddy (POST 3) at 30-1 for Shane Meyers and Gavin Ashton is a deep longshot.

Page Two (POST 7) at 30-1 for Victoria Oliver and Cipriano Gil is another extreme long price.

Betting Strategy

Timestream (POST 8) is the logical win bet in this field, but the 2-1 price requires some exacta support. Box Timestream (POST 8) with Grey Bull (POST 5) and Terre Haute (POST 9) in exactas. Use Agendum (POST 2) and Dynadee (POST 4) in trifecta constructions at their prices. Modern Master (POST 6) is a small-ticket inclusion in trifecta bottoms based solely on the Loveberry factor.

Selections

Win: Timestream (POST 8) Place: Grey Bull (POST 5) Show: Terre Haute (POST 9)

RACE 7 — Post 3:14 ET — 1100f | Turf | Claiming | Clm 16000n2l | Fillies & Mares | Purse $34,500

Pace Analysis

A 10-horse claiming turf sprint for fillies and mares who have not won two lifetime races. The 1100-furlong (approximately 6.5 furlongs) distance on Colonial's grass is one of the track's signature configurations. Three co-favorites at 4-1 — Boost (POST 2), Miss Bourbon (POST 6), and Jack Charles (POST 7) — create an interesting betting dynamic where none of the three has a clear edge in the morning line. Early pace will be significant here, and the inside posts have a natural advantage in a turf sprint where the run to the first turn compresses the field.

Key Contenders

Boost (POST 2) at 4-1 for W. Robert Bailes and Taylor Kingsley gets one of the best posts in the field for a turf sprint. Bailes is a trainer with some Colonial success, and Kingsley from the two post in an 1100-furlong turf sprint can settle just off the early pace and produce a winning run in the stretch. Handicappers identify this as the top play in a wide-open claiming turf sprint.

Miss Bourbon (POST 6) at 4-1 for Jordan Blair and Martin Chuan is from a mid-post draw and is trained by a barn that has shown form with turf fillies. Chuan is an active jockey on the Colonial circuit who can find running room from the six hole.

Jack Charles (POST 7) at 4-1 for Jason Libertini and Mychel Sanchez is the third co-favorite and benefits from a top rider in Sanchez. Libertini targets turf sprints effectively, and Sanchez rarely takes a losing trip voluntarily. From post 7, this filly will likely be angled toward the rail in the early going.

Secondary Choices

Ryu Mo (POST 5) at 6-1 for Tim Girten and Samuel Marin is a live price from a clean middle draw. Girten is a competent trainer and Marin on a 6-1 in a competitive turf sprint warrants attention.

Hoppetosse (POST 3) at 8-1 for John Robb and Xavier Perez offers value from an inside post. The three-hole in a 10-horse turf sprint is a productive position, and at 8-1, this filly could easily surface in the exacta or trifecta.

Golden Ambition (POST 8) at 8-1 for Steve Klesaris and Jorge Ruiz comes from a barn that regularly has turf horses ready to fire. Klesaris is a veteran trainer who knows how to prepare horses for turf sprints, and 8-1 could represent legitimate value.

Longshots

Don't Copy Me (POST 1) at 15-1 for Ramon Aguayo and Jevian Toledo has the rail in a turf sprint, which is always a factor, but Toledo on a 15-1 in a claiming sprint may indicate limited material. Toledo's presence does elevate the play.

Yes Chef (POST 4) at 10-1 for Richard Sillaman and D.E. Centeno is a double-digit price from a clean draw. Centeno is competent and may find a way into the exotics.

Gimme Two Shots (POST 9) at 12-1 for Karen Dennehy Godsey and Sonny Leon is notable at a price because Leon rarely accepts rides without some reason to believe. The wide post is a concern in a turf sprint.

Who's Yer Man (POST 10) at 30-1 for Susan Cooney and Gavin Ashton is the widest draw and a longshot without compelling winning credentials in this spot.

Betting Strategy

With three co-favorites at 4-1, this race is set up for an exotic play rather than a straight win bet. Box Boost (POST 2), Miss Bourbon (POST 6), and Jack Charles (POST 7) in an exacta, and structure trifectas using these three on top with Ryu Mo (POST 5) and Hoppetosse (POST 3) underneath. Golden Ambition (POST 8) is worth a bottom slot inclusion based on trainer.

Selections

Win: Boost (POST 2) Place: Jack Charles (POST 7) Show: Miss Bourbon (POST 6)

RACE 8 — Post 3:47 ET — 1870f | Turf | Allowance | Alw 72000b | Fillies & Mares | Purse $72,000

Pace Analysis

The featured race of the day is a $72,000 allowance on the turf at 1870 furlongs for fillies and mares with an exceptional field of 12. This is the most competitive race on the card and has attracted trainer talent from major circuits — Mark Casse, Brendan Walsh, H. Graham Motion, Claude McGaughey III, Joseph Orseno, and Cherie DeVaux all have entries. Ceniza Pampa (POST 9) at 2-1 is the clear morning line favorite in a wide-open field. The distance favors horses who can rate and run, and on a firm Colonial turf course the early pace in a 12-horse field could be chaotic with multiple potential on-pace runners.

Key Contenders

Ceniza Pampa (POST 9) at 2-1 for Horacio De Paz and Johan Rosado is the clear betting choice in this prestigious allowance. The 2-1 morning line in a 12-horse field is a strong statement of confidence from the oddsmakers. De Paz has been building a reputation at Colonial, and Rosado is a capable rider who will look to get this filly into a comfortable rhythm from the nine post. In a 1870-furlong turf route, the nine post requires some early adjustment, but in a 12-horse field with a slow early pace, a stalking trip is well within reach.

Forget About You (POST 11) at 4-1 for Brendan Walsh and Mychel Sanchez is the second choice and comes from a barn with a strong national reputation for placing turf fillies in winning spots. Walsh regularly ships horses to Colonial for quality grass races, and Sanchez is one of the most accomplished Mid-Atlantic riders available. Handicappers point to this filly as the main danger to the favorite.

Etawa (POST 12) at 12-1 for Mark Casse and Jareth Loveberry comes from one of North America's elite training operations. Casse's horses regularly travel to Colonial in search of turf opportunities, and Loveberry is a talented rider with experience on grass at multiple circuits. At 12-1, this is a prime overlay candidate if Casse has this filly at peak fitness.

Secondary Choices

Candy Rockette (POST 1) at 6-1 for Brittany Russell and Jevian Toledo is a local favorite from a barn that has dominated this Colonial meeting. Russell getting Toledo on her horse in the featured race of the day suggests this filly is fully prepared. The rail post in a 1870-furlong turf route at Colonial is ideal — saving ground on both turns with a skilled rider is a significant tactical advantage.

Tiz The Lady (POST 7) at 10-1 for Claude McGaughey III and Samuel Marin draws the eye based on trainer credentials. McGaughey is a Hall of Fame trainer whose horses are invariably well-prepared, and at 10-1 this price may underestimate the quality of the connections.

Tell Me Some Lies (POST 4) at 8-1 for Joseph Orseno and Sonny Leon is trained by another quality New York-based conditioner. Orseno also has Fib (POST 7) in Race 4, and the stable's commitment to Colonial's turf card is notable.

Longshots

War Madam (POST 8) at 8-1 for Madison Meyers and Kevin Gomez is a local program horse at a price. Meyers has been active at Colonial and Gomez is a competent rider.

Screen Test (POST 2) at 12-1 for H. Graham Motion and Jorge Ruiz merits inclusion based on trainer alone. Motion is one of the finest turf horse trainers in North America and a 12-1 price on a Motion grass filly should always prompt interest. At 12-1, this could be the best value on the entire card.

Pretty Ribbon (POST 3) at 15-1 for Cherie DeVaux and Martin Chuan is from the barn that saddled Englishman and Golden Tempo at Saratoga on Saturday. DeVaux clearly has her operation humming, and a 15-1 in the featured race at Colonial may underestimate her horsemanship. Worth a small investment.

Annelle (POST 5) at 20-1 for Victoria Oliver and Cipriano Gil is a longshot but Oliver has produced Colonial turf winners before.

Hay Grace Brennan (POST 6) at 30-1 for A. Ferris Allen III and H.A. Karamanos is an extreme price with an experienced rider.

Tricky Kitty (POST 10) at 30-1 for Thomas Garner and Taylor Kingsley is a deep longshot.

Betting Strategy

The featured race offers the best exotic wagering opportunities on the card. Use Ceniza Pampa (POST 9) and Forget About You (POST 11) as the top two, with Candy Rockette (POST 1) as the key value play based on post position and trainer form. Screen Test (POST 2) at 12-1 and Pretty Ribbon (POST 3) at 15-1 are the best value plays in this race for trifecta bottoms. Etawa (POST 12) at 12-1 with Loveberry aboard for Casse is the prime upset special.

Selections

Win: Ceniza Pampa (POST 9) Place: Forget About You (POST 11) Show: Candy Rockette (POST 1)

RACE 9 — Post 4:22 ET — 1760f | Turf | Optional Claiming | OClm 30000 | Fillies & Mares | Purse $42,000

Pace Analysis

The card closes with an 11-horse optional claiming turf route at 1760 furlongs (approximately 1 1/16 miles on grass) for fillies and mares. Dandy Vandy (POST 4) at 2-1 is the morning line favorite with Duchessa (POST 1) at 4-1 as the second choice. The optional claiming condition attracts a mix of horses — some entered to be claimed, others protected — which typically produces competitive fields with multiple legitimate contenders. The 1760-furlong turf distance is slightly shorter than the Route 2 distance in Race 8, rewarding horses with more speed or a shorter closing kick.

Key Contenders

Dandy Vandy (POST 4) at 2-1 for Jamie Ness and Martin Chuan is the strong morning line favorite. Ness also has Grey Bull (POST 5) in Race 6, showing the barn's commitment to the Colonial turf card. From post 4 in an 11-horse turf route, Chuan should be able to rate comfortably and pounce in the stretch. The 2-1 morning line in a competitive optional claimer is a meaningful statement.

Duchessa (POST 1) at 4-1 for Arnaud Delacour and Samuel Marin is a prime contender. Delacour is an accomplished turf horse trainer with a strong national reputation for placing horses precisely in spots they can win. The rail in a 1760-furlong turf route at Colonial is a premium post, and Marin will have every opportunity to save ground and make a decisive run in the final turn and stretch.

Tululo (POST 7) at 6-1 for Sandino Hernandez and Mychel Sanchez is a live price option. Sanchez consistently delivers quality rides in turf routes and 6-1 in an optional claimer is a fair assessment. Hernandez is an active Colonial trainer who knows the course well.

Secondary Choices

Devastating (POST 9) at 8-1 for W. Robert Bailes and Jevian Toledo merits attention based on rider. Toledo taking an 8-1 optional claimer in a turf route suggests the connections believe this filly is fit and ready. Bailes also has Boost (POST 2) in Race 7.

Determind Princess (POST 11) at 6-1 for Elizabeth Merryman and Jorge Ruiz is a local-angle horse at a fair price. Merryman has Colonial experience and Ruiz has been active throughout this meeting.

Arise My Love (POST 3) at 10-1 for Milan Milosevic and Forest Boyce is a double-digit price that could emerge as an upset factor in the finale. Boyce is an active rider at Colonial who can find running room on the turf.

Longshots

No Need To Ask (POST 6) at 10-1 for Lynn Ashby and Carol Cedeno is a local program horse at a price worth a small exotic inclusion.

Queen Wilhelmina (POST 8) at 20-1 for Lindsay Schultz and Sonny Leon is notable for the Leon engagement. At 20-1 in a turf route, this could be a horse that has improved in the mornings without showing public form.

Kobe's Hope (POST 10) at 20-1 for Joanne Shankle and Jose Vargas is a Vargas mount worth a minimal inclusion in large trifecta constructions.

Don't Fool With Me (POST 5) at 30-1 for Mark Shuman and Gavin Ashton is a deep longshot in the finale.

Skittliedat (POST 2) at 30-1 for Robert Leaf III and Xavier Perez is an extreme price from an inside post.

Betting Strategy

The final race is an excellent opportunity for a win bet on Duchessa (POST 1) at 4-1, given the post position edge on the Colonial turf and the quality of trainer and rider. Use Dandy Vandy (POST 4) and Tululo (POST 7) in exactas around Duchessa (POST 1). Include Devastating (POST 9) in trifectas at the price.

Selections

Win: Duchessa (POST 1) Place: Dandy Vandy (POST 4) Show: Tululo (POST 7)

Jockey Notes and Insights

Jevian Toledo is the marquee rider on today's Colonial card, with mounts in Race 3 (HUGH'S LEGEND, POST 6), Race 4 (OCCUPY, POST 6), Race 5 (SCRUTINATOR, POST 3), Race 7 (DON'T COPY ME, POST 1), Race 8 (CANDY ROCKETTE, POST 1), and Race 9 (DEVASTATING, POST 9). Toledo is one of the more accomplished Mid-Atlantic riders working this summer stand, and his book of business today is exceptional — particularly Scrutinator (POST 3) in Race 5 and Candy Rockette (POST 1) in Race 8, both for Brittany Russell's barn.

Samuel Marin has an active book across the card with mounts in Race 1 (LITTLE BOSS MAN, POST 3), Race 2 (VALIANT HONOR, POST 6), Race 3 (AYNI, POST 7), Race 4 (FIB, POST 7), Race 5 (GRAN CORREDOR, POST 7), Race 6 (TIMESTREAM, POST 8), Race 8 (TIZ THE LADY, POST 7), and Race 9 (DUCHESSA, POST 1). Marin's assignment on Duchessa (POST 1) for Arnaud Delacour in the finale stands out as a quality opportunity, as does Timestream (POST 8) in Race 6 and Ayni (POST 7) in Race 3.

Mychel Sanchez has quality mounts in Race 3 (SILVER STRINGS, POST 4), Race 7 (JACK CHARLES, POST 7), Race 8 (FORGET ABOUT YOU, POST 11), and Race 9 (TULULO, POST 7). Sanchez's assignment on Forget About You (POST 11) for Brendan Walsh in the featured Race 8 is the standout. Sanchez brings major circuit experience and regularly delivers clean, professional rides in grass routes.

Jareth Loveberry has targeted several key spots: Race 4 (SPUR OF THE MOMENT, POST 1), Race 5 (CHIEF MORTER, POST 10), Race 6 (MODERN MASTER, POST 6), and Race 8 (ETAWA, POST 12). The Loveberry-Casse combination on Etawa (POST 12) at 12-1 in Race 8 is the best value angle tied to a jockey booking today.

Sonny Leon is engaged across multiple races including Race 1 (WHALEAXE, POST 4), Race 2 (absent from primary choices), Race 3 (absent from primary), Race 4 (SUSAN B, POST 4), Race 7 (GIMME TWO SHOTS, POST 9), Race 8 (TELL ME SOME LIES, POST 4), and Race 9 (QUEEN WILHELMINA, POST 8). Leon's mount on Whaleaxe (POST 4) in Race 1 and Tell Me Some Lies (POST 4) in Race 8 merit attention.

H.A. Karamanos takes the call on Ran The Red (POST 3) in Race 2 and Hay Grace Brennan (POST 6) in Race 8. Karamanos is a veteran Mid-Atlantic rider who brings experience to modest assignments. Raul Mena, an accomplished New York-circuit rider, picks up Legend's Girl (POST 2) in Race 3 — worth noting at 8-1. Diego Herrera rides the morning line favorite Tapit Nitro (POST 5) in Race 4, a key assignment.

Trainer Notes and Insights

Brittany Russell has been the dominant trainer at this Colonial meet and enters Sunday with horses in Race 3 (SILVER STRINGS, POST 4), Race 4 (OCCUPY, POST 6), Race 5 (SCRUTINATOR, POST 3), and Race 8 (CANDY ROCKETTE, POST 1). Russell's strike rate at this meeting has been exceptional, and the barn sends out fit, ready runners. The presence of Jevian Toledo on two of her four starters today — Scrutinator (POST 3) and Candy Rockette (POST 1) — underscores how the top rider is aligned with the top trainer at this meeting. Scrutinator (POST 3) at even money in Race 5 is the barn's most heavily favored runner.

Michael Trombetta has two entries today: Ayni (POST 7) in Race 3 and Air Kiss (POST 2) in Race 4. Trombetta is a quality Mid-Atlantic trainer with a strong record placing horses in maiden races, and Ayni (POST 7) at 2-1 in the $87,500 maiden special weight is a prime play.

Lacey Gaudet has Airbrush (POST 2) in Race 1 and Lady Zeta (POST 2) in Race 2 — two strong morning line plays in back-to-back races, making the first two races of the card a compelling starting point for multi-race wagers.

Michael Stidham has Susan B (POST 4) in Race 4 and Agendum (POST 2) in Race 6. Stidham is a national-caliber trainer, and Agendum (POST 2) at 6-1 with Jevian Toledo in the $45,000 maiden turf route is a quality secondary selection.

Brendan Walsh is one of the elite trainers on the national circuit and enters Forget About You (POST 11) in Race 8. Walsh's horses at Colonial are always dangerous, and Forget About You (POST 11) at 4-1 in the featured race is among the most professional horse-rider-trainer combinations on the entire card.

Mark Casse's Etawa (POST 12) in Race 8 is a significant shipper entry. Casse regularly targets quality grass races with well-prepared fillies, and Loveberry's booking confirms the connections are serious. H. Graham Motion's Screen Test (POST 2) at 12-1 in Race 8 is a value special — Motion is arguably the best turf trainer in the Mid-Atlantic and his horses at Colonial are always dangerous at price.

Cherie DeVaux, who saddled two major stakes horses at Saratoga on Saturday, still found time to enter Pretty Ribbon (POST 3) in Race 8 at Colonial. At 15-1, the DeVaux angle in the featured race deserves respect.

Joseph Orseno has Fib (POST 7) in Race 4 and Tell Me Some Lies (POST 4) in Race 8. Orseno is a New York-area trainer who has had success with turf horses at Colonial.

Rohan Crichton trains both Tapit Nitro (POST 5) in Race 4 and Ay Papi (POST 1) in Race 5 — two legitimate plays on the afternoon.

Jamie Ness has Grey Bull (POST 5) in Race 6 and Dandy Vandy (POST 4) in Race 9, making the trainer one of the most active visitors to today's card from outside the immediate Colonial base.

Best Wagering Strategies and Value Plays

The Colonial Downs Sunday card offers several distinct wagering angles for horseplayers looking to maximize value.

The top value play on the entire card is Screen Test (POST 2) at 12-1 in Race 8 for H. Graham Motion. Motion is among the finest turf trainers in North America, and 12-1 in a $72,000 allowance is a meaningful overlay if the horse has been working well. Etawa (POST 12) at 12-1 for Mark Casse with Loveberry aboard is equally compelling. Both of these horses in the Race 8 trifecta are must-uses.

The Brittany Russell-Jevian Toledo combination on Scrutinator (POST 3) at even money in Race 5 is the bankable leg of the day. Use it as a single in the Pick 4 and Pick 5.

For the Pick 4 spanning Races 6 through 9, the structure would be: Timestream (POST 8) single in Race 6, use Boost (POST 2), Miss Bourbon (POST 6), and Jack Charles (POST 7) in Race 7, use Ceniza Pampa (POST 9) and Forget About You (POST 11) with Candy Rockette (POST 1) in Race 8, and Duchessa (POST 1) and Dandy Vandy (POST 4) in Race 9.

For the Pick 5 starting in Race 5, use Scrutinator (POST 3) as a single in Race 5, then spread in Race 6 using Timestream (POST 8), Grey Bull (POST 5), and Agendum (POST 2). In Race 7, use Boost (POST 2), Jack Charles (POST 7), and Miss Bourbon (POST 6). In Race 8, use Ceniza Pampa (POST 9), Forget About You (POST 11), Candy Rockette (POST 1), and Screen Test (POST 2). Close in Race 9 with Duchessa (POST 1) and Dandy Vandy (POST 4).

The best straight exacta value play of the card is the Race 8 box of Ceniza Pampa (POST 9) and Candy Rockette (POST 1). The favorite at 2-1 and a local hot barn's runner at 6-1 from the rail in a featured allowance turf route could pay respectably.

For trifecta players, Race 7 is the best three-horse box race on the card — Boost (POST 2), Miss Bourbon (POST 6), and Jack Charles (POST 7) — at three co-favorites of 4-1 each in a 10-horse turf sprint. Any combination of those three in the trifecta should return solid value.

The best longshot of the day is Pretty Ribbon (POST 3) at 15-1 in Race 8 for Cherie DeVaux. With DeVaux saddling major stakes horses at Saratoga on Saturday and still entering a filly in Colonial's feature, the barn is clearly in top form. At 15-1, this filly deserves inclusion in all trifecta and superfecta plays in Race 8.
