Del Mar Race Day Overview — Friday, August 7, 2026

The summer meet at Del Mar rolls into its Friday card with a full twelve-race program headlined by the $100,000 Graduating Stakes in Race 7. The card opens with a grass sprint claiming event and works through a mix of maiden special weights, claimers, and allowance company before culminating in a twelve-horse turf mile route in the nightcap. The stakes crowd that descended on the Seaside Track over the Whitney weekend at Saratoga has the racing world buzzing, but Del Mar's boutique summer meeting continues to draw serious players with its deep turf chutes and competitive fields.

Dean Keppler of In the Money has singled Opus Uno (POST 5) in Race 4 as his Best Bet of the card, a notable endorsement for Peter Miller's charge in what shapes up as a competitive claiming sprint on the main track. That selection draws strong consensus from the handicapping community and will be discussed in depth.

The Clement L. Hirsch result from last Saturday remains fresh conversation at the track. Eunomia's 12-1 upset served as a reminder that Del Mar's summer turf course can produce surprises, and bettors would be wise to approach today's grass races with a value-oriented mindset rather than blindly backing morning-line favorites.

Todd Pletcher's pursuit of career win number 6,000 is dominating Saratoga coverage, but the Southern California racing scene has its own compelling storylines today, including the emergence of Flightline's first crop and a juvenile scene at Del Mar that TDN's Summer Breezes column has been monitoring closely all week.

Weather and Track Conditions — Del Mar, August 7, 2026

Del Mar's coastal marine layer typically burns off by mid-morning during August, and Friday follows that pattern. Temperatures are expected to reach the mid-70s Fahrenheit at post time with light onshore breezes off the Pacific keeping conditions comfortable. No precipitation is anticipated. The main track is listed as fast and the turf course is listed as firm, which are the standard summer Del Mar conditions that favor tactical speed and class horses who can handle quick footing.

The firm turf at Del Mar favors closers slightly less than at tracks with softer going, as the ball-bearing surface allows early speed to sustain through the stretch. However, the downhill turf chute at Del Mar remains one of the most unique features in North American racing, and horses racing in the 1100-furlong turf sprints will navigate that descent before turning for home. Horses that have experience on this course, or those with European pedigrees conditioned to firm going, carry an advantage in today's grass races.

Track and Post Position Bias — Del Mar

Del Mar's fast main track during the summer has historically shown a modest speed bias, particularly in sprints, where horses pressing from the inside or leading from post positions one through four maintain an edge. In routes on the dirt, inside post positions can be problematic if a horse is shuffled back early, but for today's mile events on the main track, post position is a secondary concern to tactical position.

On the firm turf course, the bias is more nuanced. The downhill chute for turf sprints at 1100 furlongs creates early momentum for horses positioned toward the outside of the field early, as they can angle down the hill with room to maneuver. Inside horses in turf sprints can get pinned without cover. In turf routes at 1760 furlongs, the bias is less pronounced, but horses that can settle mid-pack and work toward the inside on the second turn find the most ground-saving path to the wire.

Post position data from the current Del Mar meeting suggests that posts one through four in dirt sprints at 1320 furlongs have won at a rate consistent with their representation in the field, meaning no dramatic bias exists at that distance. In the turf sprint, posts five through eight have fared well given the room those horses enjoy coming down the hill.

RACE 1 — Post 5:00 — 1100f | T | C | Clm 32000 | BUM | Purse $50,000

This opener is a six-furlong turf sprint for fillies and mares on the claiming ranks at $32,000, run over the downhill course. The field is compact at six horses, which limits the exotic payoffs but creates a cleaner race to analyze. Speed will be at a premium over the firm turf, and horses with grass sprint experience at Del Mar specifically carry a significant edge.

Pace Analysis

With Long Mayshe Reign (POST 6) drawing the outside post in a six-horse field, the pace picture is straightforward. She is the class of this field based on her back-to-back grass sprint victories and should be able to dictate or press from just off the early fractions. Eva Lea (POST 5) and Empress Matilda (POST 3) both figure to want a forward position, meaning the early pace should be honest enough to allow closers a brief look, but on firm Del Mar turf at this distance, front-runners who rate comfortably are rarely caught.

Key Contenders

Long Mayshe Reign (POST 6) enters as the clear morning-line favorite at 2-1 and has earned that respect. Trainer George Papaprodromou has her pointed at a third consecutive grass sprint win, and her record on this specific course speaks for itself. She has learned to settle into a rhythm coming down the Del Mar hill, and with Julien Bravo taking the mount, she gets a rider who understands the nuances of this particular chute. Her class in this field is unquestioned, and at $32,000 claiming, her connections appear confident she will not be taken.

Eva Lea (POST 5) draws a perfect post for tactical purposes and gets the services of Joel Rosario, one of the meet's top riders. Trained by John Sadler, who consistently places horses well on the Southern California circuit, she exits what should have been a sharp preparation for this spot. Sadler's barn has been in excellent form during the Del Mar meeting, and Eva Lea (POST 5) figures to be forwardly placed from the gate. She is the most likely horse to press Long Mayshe Reign (POST 6) into the stretch.

Secondary Choices

Empress Matilda (POST 3) at 4-1 represents the second-most logical target in the field. Ryan Hanson has her conditioned for this type of event, and Kazushi Kimura is one of the meet's busiest and most effective riders. Her inside draw gives her a clean trip if she can find the front early, which is possible given the six-horse field.

Lady Rider (POST 2) at 3-1 on the morning line is interesting from a price perspective. Vladimir Cerin does solid work with claiming grass horses, and Juan Hernandez gets the call. She figures to try to stalk the pace from a good inside post and could pick up pieces late if the front end tires.

Longshots

Invincible Molly (POST 1) at 5-1 draws the rail, which as discussed is not ideal in turf sprints at Del Mar. Steve Knapp trains her and Armando Ayuso rides, a combination that shows up regularly on this card. The rail post is a significant concern coming down the hill.

Tam's Little Angel (POST 4) at 8-1 is trained by Hector Palma with Tiago Pereira up. She likely needs significant improvement from her recent form to factor at the wire.

Selections

Win: Long Mayshe Reign (POST 6) Place: Eva Lea (POST 5) Show: Empress Matilda (POST 3)

Betting Strategy: Long Mayshe Reign (POST 6) is the legitimate single in Race 1. Use her on top in exactas with Eva Lea (POST 5) and Empress Matilda (POST 3). At 2-1 she is not a price play, but her win probability is high enough to anchor the early Pick 4 sequence with confidence.

RACE 2 — Post 5:30 — 1760f | D | C | Clm 10000 | BUM | Purse $30,000

The second race is a bottom-of-the-barrel mile route on the dirt at $10,000 claiming, the lowest purse on the card at $30,000. Fields at this level at Del Mar can be unpredictable, and pace collapses are common when horses at this claiming price are stretching out. Three horses share the morning line co-favorite role at 2-1, which creates significant wagering value in the exotics.

Pace Analysis

Theresasilverlinin (POST 3) and Free And Humble (POST 5) both profile as speed horses at this level, and Love Our Family (POST 6) closes from off the pace. If Theresasilverlinin (POST 3) and Free And Humble (POST 5) engage early in a prolonged speed duel going a mile on the dirt at this price, the race could set up perfectly for a closer. Love Our Family (POST 6) from the outside post for Gary Stute is the logical beneficiary.

Key Contenders

Free And Humble (POST 5) trained by Peter Miller and ridden by Ali Husain draws a favorable middle post and figures to be pressing or leading early. Miller has been one of the most active and successful trainers at the Del Mar meet, and his barn's overall form gives Free And Humble (POST 5) a meaningful edge at this level. Miller horses at low claiming prices tend to be well-spotted, and at 2-1 this is the logical choice to anchor the race.

Theresasilverlinin (POST 3) for Steve Knapp with Armando Ayuso riding shares the morning-line favoritism. Knapp places horses intelligently at the claiming level and Theresasilverlinin (POST 3) draws well in post three. The concern is whether she can handle the mile distance if pressed hard early by Free And Humble (POST 5).

Secondary Choices

Love Our Family (POST 6) at 2-1 from the outside post for Gary Stute figures to close into whatever pace scenario develops. Stute is a veteran of the Southern California claiming circuit who knows how to spot a horse for a win, and Welfin Orantes takes the mount. If the speed horses engage each other, Love Our Family (POST 6) is the most dangerous threat.

Makenarita (POST 1) at 6-1 draws the rail for Edwin Alvarez and gets Kimura. While the rail in a mile route is not catastrophic, she will need a clean break and a ground-saving trip to be a factor at this price.

Longshots

Danzig Til Dawn (POST 2) at 15-1 is trained by D. Wayne Baker and gets Epifanio Garcia. At 15-1 she is a deep longshot at this level but could hit the board in a contentious pace scenario.

Misty Dancer (POST 4) at 15-1 for Bill McLean with Jeremy Laprida riding is the other long price in the field. Neither of the 15-1 shots figures prominently in the winning picture at this level given the deeper competition.

Selections

Win: Free And Humble (POST 5) Place: Love Our Family (POST 6) Show: Theresasilverlinin (POST 3)

Betting Strategy: With three co-favorites at 2-1, the exacta is the play. Wheel Free And Humble (POST 5) over Love Our Family (POST 6) and Theresasilverlinin (POST 3), and consider a saver with Love Our Family (POST 6) on top. The $2 exacta box among the three favorites could return modest value. Avoid the trifecta given the price level.

RACE 3 — Post 6:02 — 1320f | D | S | Md Sp Wt | BUM | Purse $80,000

The first maiden special weight sprint of the day at six furlongs on the main track offers the best purse in the early portion of the card at $80,000. This is a fillies-only event with seven runners, and the two morning-line co-favorites at 2-1 set up an interesting early duel.

Pace Analysis

With Genuine Grace (POST 1) and Factor P (POST 2) sharing morning-line favoritism and both likely to be forwardly placed, the early pace in this six-furlong sprint figures to be honest. Mustang Knicky (POST 5) and Native Empress (POST 6) both figure to stalk. The pace question is whether Genuine Grace (POST 1) or Factor P (POST 2) can sustain through the stretch off what could be a brisk early pace with multiple horses seeking the lead.

Key Contenders

Genuine Grace (POST 1) at 2-1 for trainer Anthony Saavedra with Antonio Fresu riding gets the rail post in a sprint, which is workable at Del Mar. Saavedra is a solid Cal-based conditioner and Genuine Grace (POST 1) appears to have been prepared specifically for this spot. Fresu has been a reliable presence at the meet.

Factor P (POST 2) at 2-1 for Antonio Garcia with Armando Ayuso riding is the other logical top choice. Garcia conditions horses primarily at the Southern California circuit, and post two in a sprint is a strong draw. Factor P (POST 2) will need to show she can get to the wire in maiden company.

Secondary Choices

Mustang Knicky (POST 5) at 4-1 for Steve Knapp with Tiago Pereira is a horse the handicapping community has identified as a significant price threat. Knapp conditions both Mustang Knicky (POST 5) and Quick Sip (POST 4), giving him a strong barn presence in this race. Mustang Knicky (POST 5) from post five with Pereira could stalk the pace and prove to be the best value option on the board if the two favorites tangle early.

Native Empress (POST 6) at 4-1 for Tim McCanna with Kyle Frey riding gets a wide post but figures to have tactical speed. In maiden company, a horse with natural ability can overcome post position concerns.

Longshots

Quick Sip (POST 4) at 8-1 is the second Knapp runner and gets Armando Aguilar. With two horses in the race, Knapp may use a pace strategy to help Mustang Knicky (POST 5) and worth noting as a possible stabilizing factor in the pace scenario.

Sally Says (POST 3) at 20-1 for Gloria Haley with Cristobal Herrera is a significant longshot with little to recommend at this level in maiden company. Hayley Amber (POST 7) at 20-1 for Sally Rivera with Alfredo Bautista is similarly priced and faces a tall order against better-credentialed maidens.

Selections

Win: Mustang Knicky (POST 5) Place: Factor P (POST 2) Show: Genuine Grace (POST 1)

Betting Strategy: The 4-1 morning line on Mustang Knicky (POST 5) represents value in a race where the two favorites may have drawn each other into a speed duel. Use Mustang Knicky (POST 5) on top in exactas with Factor P (POST 2) and Genuine Grace (POST 1), and consider a straight win bet at 4-1 if the price holds.

RACE 4 — Post 6:34 — 1320f | D | C | Clm 32000b | BUN | Purse $32,000

This is the card's Best Bet race according to consensus handicappers, with Opus Uno (POST 5) selected as the standout. A six-furlong sprint for males on the main track at $32,000 claiming, this race features six horses and two Peter Miller trainees. The presence of two Miller horses — Opus Uno (POST 5) and Marcos Performance (POST 6) — will influence the pace and wagering dynamics significantly.

Pace Analysis

Bee Eye Gee (POST 1) figures to be the primary pace horse from the rail with Joel Rosario aboard. Hurricane Way (POST 2) for Mark Rheinford should also have early foot. The question is whether the early pace set by these two will be sufficient to set up Opus Uno (POST 5), who appears to want to stalk rather than lead. With two Miller horses in the field, Marcos Performance (POST 6) may play a pace role that benefits the stable's primary runner.

Key Contenders

Opus Uno (POST 5) at 3-1 is the consensus Best Bet of the card. Peter Miller has trained this horse to peak form for this exact spot, and Julien Bravo takes a live mount. At $32,000 claiming with a b condition attached indicating he has not started for a higher claiming price or at this claiming price after a specific date, the connections are confident in his ability to get the job done without fear of losing him. Miller's win percentage at the Del Mar meet is consistently among the top trainers, and Opus Uno (POST 5) represents his A-game in what looks like an ideal assignment.

Bee Eye Gee (POST 1) at 2-1 morning line draws the rail and gets Joel Rosario, the meet's top jockey by any measure. Brian Koriner trains him and the morning-line favoritism suggests strong form coming into this race. However, the rail in a six-furlong sprint at Del Mar for males, while not as disadvantageous as in turf sprints, means he will need to find clear ground early or risk being pinned.

Secondary Choices

Hurricane Way (POST 2) at 4-1 for Mark Rheinford and Armando Aguilar has shown early foot in recent efforts. Rheinford is a reliable conditioner at this level on the Southern California circuit, and Hurricane Way (POST 2) from post two is in prime territory to control the pace or set up a two-turn position.

Marcos Performance (POST 6) at 4-1 for Peter Miller and Ricardo Gonzalez is the stablemate concern for Opus Uno (POST 5) bettors. In a two-horse Miller entry scenario the betting would be combined, but they run as separate betting interests here, meaning Marcos Performance (POST 6) represents an additional Miller threat that could further complicate the exacta. Gonzalez is a capable rider who could surprise.

Longshots

Bazooka Charlie (POST 3) at 5-1 for R.B. Hess Jr. and Tiago Pereira is an interesting price at 5-1. Hess conditions horses that often run better than their odds suggest, and Pereira has been an active and effective rider throughout the meet. Bazooka Charlie (POST 3) could represent the best exacta play underneath Opus Uno (POST 5) if the front end battles set up a stalker.

Unpretentious (POST 4) at 8-1 for Charles Treece and Kazushi Kimura is the deepest price among the contenders. At 8-1 morning line, he will need a perfect trip and some help from the pace scenario to factor at the wire.

Selections

Win: Opus Uno (POST 5) Place: Bee Eye Gee (POST 1) Show: Bazooka Charlie (POST 3)

Betting Strategy: Back Opus Uno (POST 5) to win as your Best Bet of the card. Use him on top in exactas with Bee Eye Gee (POST 1), Marcos Performance (POST 6), and Bazooka Charlie (POST 3). The $1 exacta wheel of Opus Uno (POST 5) over the field costs $5 and could return strong value. Also consider a trifecta key with Opus Uno (POST 5) on top, Bee Eye Gee (POST 1) and Marcos Performance (POST 6) second, over Bazooka Charlie (POST 3) and Hurricane Way (POST 2).

RACE 5 — Post 7:06 — 1100f | T | S | Md Sp Wt | AOF | Purse $80,000

The largest field on the card, eleven fillies and mares contest this maiden special weight turf sprint at 1100 furlongs over the Del Mar downhill course. The diverse morning line with prices ranging from 3-1 to 15-1 suggests genuine uncertainty among the handicapping community. This is the type of race where European-bred fillies with firm turf experience and pedigree can outperform their domestic rivals on this unique downhill course.

Pace Analysis

An eleven-horse field on the downhill turf course creates significant pace complications. Not So Merry Mary (POST 8) at 3-1 for Tim Yakteen figures to be the most professionally rated, while Big Twist (POST 2) from the Yakteen barn is likely to be forwardly placed. Petite Marie (POST 1) from the rail could attempt to establish early, but with eleven horses navigating the downhill chute, post position becomes critically important. Posts eight through ten are generally favorable in this event, as those horses find room to stride freely down the hill before the first turn.

Key Contenders

Not So Merry Mary (POST 8) at 3-1 is the morning-line favorite and represents Tim Yakteen's primary hope in this race. Yakteen, who has been among the more successful trainers at the Del Mar meeting with his grass runners, will have Not So Merry Mary (POST 8) ready for a sharp effort. Kazushi Kimura gets the call and from post eight he has a favorable position on the downhill. This is the Yakteen stable's more forward choice given her shorter morning-line odds versus Big Twist (POST 2).

First Time Listing (POST 10) at 4-1 for Simon Callaghan with Umberto Rispoli represents an interesting angle. Callaghan has established himself as one of the premier turf trainers at Del Mar, consistently placing European-influenced horses on the firm going. Post ten in the downhill sprint is genuinely favorable, and Rispoli is one of the circuit's most effective turf riders. This horse deserves serious consideration despite the relatively wide draw.

Secondary Choices

Big Twist (POST 2) at 4-1 is the second Yakteen runner and gets Joel Rosario, the meet's top rider. From post two in an eleven-horse field on the downhill course, the concern is traffic early in the descent. However, Rosario's superior course knowledge and reaction time make this a manageable trip, and Big Twist (POST 2) is not to be dismissed.

Happy Heatwave (POST 7) at 5-1 for Alexis Barba and Antonio Fresu is in a favorable post position for this event. Barba has shown the ability to produce grass runners in maiden company, and post seven provides running room down the hill.

Longshots

Petite Marie (POST 1) at 5-1 for Paula Capestro with T.C. Baze draws the rail, which is a significant disadvantage in the downhill turf sprint. Baze is an experienced hand who will attempt to find a path, but fighting the inside rail down the hill with ten horses to the outside is a difficult proposition.

Potica (POST 6) at 6-1 for Ryan Hanson and Adrian Escobedo is from a favorable middle-outside draw and deserves a mention as a potential price player. Hanson has shown competence with grass horses at this meet.

Miss Mo Brown (POST 3) at 8-1 for Andy Mathis and Cesar Belmont and Mama Loves Vegas (POST 4) at 8-1 for Val Brinkerhoff and Victor Espinoza are mid-price options that could hit the board in an open maiden field. Espinoza's experience on the downhill course is an asset for Mama Loves Vegas (POST 4).

Caden's Gal (POST 5) at 12-1 for Andy Mathis and Armando Aguilar and Kathy's House (POST 11) at 8-1 for Luis Mendez and Alfredo Bautista are double-digit prices without strong claims to a win in this company. Stay My Girl (POST 9) at 15-1 for Edwin Alvarez and Welfin Orantes rounds out the field as the deepest price.

Selections

Win: Not So Merry Mary (POST 8) Place: First Time Listing (POST 10) Show: Big Twist (POST 2)

Betting Strategy: The eleven-horse field on the downhill turf course sets up as the best exotic race on the early portion of the card. Play a trifecta with Not So Merry Mary (POST 8) and First Time Listing (POST 10) on top, using Big Twist (POST 2), Happy Heatwave (POST 7), and Mama Loves Vegas (POST 4) in third. The Pick 3 from Race 5 through Race 7 has potential for a strong sequence if Opus Uno (POST 5) leads into it from Race 4.

RACE 6 — Post 7:36 — 1210f | D | MO | Moc 65000 | AOF | Purse $50,000

A maiden optional claiming event at $65,000 for fillies and mares going six and a half furlongs on the main track. Ten runners create a wide-open field, and the presence of Peter Miller again with two runners — Princess Jet (POST 4) and Lunar Velocity (POST 7) — gives his barn significant leverage over this race.

Pace Analysis

The six and a half furlong distance on the main track requires horses to settle from the gate before engaging in the stretch run. With ten fillies entered, the early pace could be contested if multiple runners show early speed. Princess Jet (POST 4) for Miller and Joel Rosario is likely to press or lead, while Make Me Money (POST 10) as a co-favorite from the outside will close. The pace scenario sets up as moderate early with a pressing race in the final three furlongs.

Key Contenders

Princess Jet (POST 4) at 5-1 for Peter Miller and Joel Rosario is in the sweet spot of the field both in terms of post position and connections. Miller's dominance at this meet is well-documented, and Princess Jet (POST 4) gets the best rider at the meet for support. At 5-1 morning line she offers genuine value in an open maiden optional claiming field.

Lunar Velocity (POST 7) at 4-1 is Miller's second runner in the race and gets Assael Espinoza. With the outside post of Miller's two runners, Lunar Velocity (POST 7) figures to have a clear view of the pace from a stalking position. Miller with two runners in an optional claiming maiden strongly suggests one of the two will win this race.

Secondary Choices

Make Me Money (POST 10) at 4-1 for Luis Mendez and E. Maldonado is the other morning-line co-favorite. At the ten-post she will need to cover ground, but Mendez conditions horses carefully and Make Me Money (POST 10) drawing the outside in a route could sit just off the pace with a wide, unobstructed view of the race.

I Know Nothing (POST 2) at 6-1 for Doug O'Neill and E. Jaramillo deserves respect. O'Neill is one of Southern California's premier trainers, and post two provides a clean tracking position. At 6-1 morning line this is a live price if O'Neill has her ready to go.

Longshots

It'sthetwentythird (POST 8) at 6-1 for R.B. Hess Jr. and Julien Leparoux represents a second Hess runner on the card. Leparoux is among the circuit's most polished riders, and It'sthetwentythird (POST 8) could surprise at a fair price.

Danielle (POST 5) at 8-1 for Aggie Ordonez and Kent Desormeaux is a notable longshot play. Desormeaux is a Hall of Fame rider who knows this track intimately, and when he shows up on a horse at this level, attention is warranted.

Blue Sky Rain (POST 9) at 8-1 for Daniel Blacker and Antonio Fresu and Miyako Pauma (POST 1) at 15-1 for Gloria Haley and Kazushi Kimura represent additional prices in the field. Miyako Pauma (POST 1) at 15-1 from the rail in a ten-horse field on the main track is a challenging draw.

Pro Payne (POST 3) at 20-1 for Val Brinkerhoff and Armando Aguilar and Fast Affair (POST 6) at 20-1 for Val Brinkerhoff and Alfredo Bautista are the two deepest prices in the field. Brinkerhoff running two at 20-1 suggests these are secondary entries without strong winning chances.

Selections

Win: Lunar Velocity (POST 7) Place: Princess Jet (POST 4) Show: Make Me Money (POST 10)

Betting Strategy: The Peter Miller double entry is the story of this race. Box Princess Jet (POST 4) and Lunar Velocity (POST 7) in the exacta to ensure Miller barn profit. Add Make Me Money (POST 10) and I Know Nothing (POST 2) as third-place threats in the trifecta underneath the Miller horses. The $1 trifecta box of Princess Jet (POST 4), Lunar Velocity (POST 7), and Make Me Money (POST 10) costs $6 and could return very well in an open field.

RACE 7 — Post 8:06 — 1210f | D | N | GraduatinB100k | AON | Purse $100,000

The card's stakes race, the $100,000 Graduating Stakes at six and a half furlongs on the main track for juveniles. This is the headliner of the card and attracts significant attention from handicappers monitoring the early development of two-year-olds at the Del Mar summer meeting. TDN's Summer Breezes column has been tracking juvenile talent at Del Mar closely throughout the meet, and this race represents a key data point. Seven runners contest the event.

Pace Analysis

Early Encore (POST 3) at 1-1 morning-line favoritism is overwhelming, suggesting this is a potentially one-horse race from a pace perspective. At even money, the market has clearly identified Early Encore (POST 3) as the class of the field. The pace question becomes whether Net Par (POST 1) or King Kameha (POST 5) will be forwardly placed enough to test the favorite early. For a stakes race, the pace should be honest without being suicidal.

Key Contenders

Early Encore (POST 3) at 1-1 for John Sadler and Joel Rosario is the overwhelming morning-line choice in this juvenile stakes. Sadler has been one of the defining trainers of the Del Mar summer meeting, and Early Encore (POST 3) draws post three, an ideal inside-out position in a seven-horse field. Rosario aboard an even-money Sadler juvenile in a stakes race is a formidable combination. Early Encore (POST 3) figures to lead or press from a clean tactical position and will be difficult to beat.

Net Par (POST 1) at 3-1 for Antonio Garcia and Juan Hernandez is the primary betting alternative and the only horse on the morning line with a legitimate claim to challenging Early Encore (POST 3). From the rail, Net Par (POST 1) will need to break sharply and find a position inside or press the pace. Garcia trains a competitive stable at this level, and Hernandez is a capable rider who can extract maximum effort.

Secondary Choices

King Kameha (POST 5) at 4-1 for Steve Knapp and Tiago Pereira is an interesting option at a fair price in a seven-horse juvenile stakes. Knapp has shown throughout this card that he places horses aggressively, and King Kameha (POST 5) from post five in a route figures to have a clean run with room to maneuver. At 4-1 against the odds-on favorite, this is the most logical play for bettors looking for value.

Prime Listing (POST 7) at 8-1 for Paula Capestro and T.C. Baze draws the outside post. Capestro and Baze are a reliable combination, and in a wide-open seven-horse juvenile stakes, the 8-1 price could represent genuine value if Early Encore (POST 3) encounters any trouble.

Longshots

Jonny's Cap (POST 4) at 10-1 for Jorge Periban and E. Jaramillo is a double-digit price that will need significant improvement. Fumano's Fire (POST 6) at 15-1 for Edwin Alvarez and Cristobal Herrera faces a steep class challenge against Early Encore (POST 3) at this price. Prime Splash (POST 2) at 20-1 for Adan Farias and Francisco Monroy is a significant longshot without strong claims in stakes company.

Selections

Win: Early Encore (POST 3) Place: Net Par (POST 1) Show: King Kameha (POST 5)

Betting Strategy: Early Encore (POST 3) at 1-1 is a likely single in the Pick 4/5. However, at even money a straight win bet yields limited value. The play is to back Early Encore (POST 3) in the exacta with Net Par (POST 1) and King Kameha (POST 5). Consider also using King Kameha (POST 5) to win with Early Encore (POST 3) to place as a saver if the price opens to 5-1 or better at post time.

RACE 8 — Post 8:35 — 1760f | T | R | Alw 16000s | BUN | Purse $35,000

The nightcap is a twelve-horse turf mile allowance for horses that have not won two races, with an $16,000 claiming price as an option, creating the mixed field of allowance and claiming horses typical of this condition. Twelve horses over a mile on the turf is a deep puzzle with multiple possible scenarios.

Pace Analysis

Pioneer Prince (POST 12) at 2-1 as the morning-line favorite from the outside post in a twelve-horse field on the turf is the clear class indicator. However, in a twelve-horse turf mile with significant pace depth from horses like Joint Venture (POST 1), Gold Foot (POST 5), and Wizard Of Westwood (POST 10), the early fractions could be contested. The pace scenario depends heavily on how aggressively the front end moves early, which will determine whether Pioneer Prince (POST 12) can close into a winning position from his outside draw.

Key Contenders

Pioneer Prince (POST 12) at 2-1 for Peter Miller and E. Jaramillo is the morning-line choice and continues Miller's dominant presence throughout this card. Post twelve in a turf mile means covering significant ground, but Miller's horses have shown the ability to overcome wide trips, and at 2-1 the market says this horse is clearly the best in the field. Jaramillo has been aboard winning Miller horses throughout the meet.

Wizard Of Westwood (POST 10) at 5-1 for Librado Barocio and Joel Rosario is the most dangerous threat. With Rosario in the irons from post ten in a twelve-horse turf mile, Wizard Of Westwood (POST 10) figures to find a stalking position on the second turn and challenge through the lane. Rosario's ability to navigate crowded turf fields is unparalleled on this circuit.

Secondary Choices

Joint Venture (POST 1) at 4-1 for Ronald Ellis and Juan Hernandez gets the rail, which in a turf mile at Del Mar is a double-edged sword. The inside saves ground on every turn but leaves Joint Venture (POST 1) vulnerable to traffic if horses drift in front of him early. Ellis conditions consistent turf horses, and at 4-1 this is a live contender.

Gold Foot (POST 5) at 4-1 for Sam Wilensky and Armando Ayuso draws a prime middle post in the twelve-horse field. Wilensky is not a household name but has shown the ability to bring horses to the races in top condition, and Gold Foot (POST 5) from post five could rate just off the pace and challenge from the inside turning for home.

Caisson (POST 3) at 4-1 for Mark Rheinford and Antonio Fresu is another 4-1 option in a race filled with middle-priced horses. Rheinford has been active at this meet and shows multiple runners on the card today. Caisson (POST 3) from post three figures to settle and run his race without much early drama.

Longshots

Keep Movin' On (POST 6) at 12-1 for Mark Glatt and Julien Leparoux is the most intriguing longshot in the field. Glatt is a highly respected turf trainer who consistently has horses that fire fresh or at returning distances, and Leparoux is one of the circuit's finest turf riders. The 12-1 price on a Glatt-Leparoux combination on the turf merits serious exotic consideration.

Jimmy Blue Jeans (POST 8) at 8-1 for Librado Barocio and Kyle Frey and J T's Watch (POST 9) at 8-1 for Genaro Vallejo and Armando Aguilar are mid-price threats that could land in the exacta or trifecta if the pace collapses. Druidic (POST 11) at 12-1 for Dan Azcarate and Kazushi Kimura is another double-digit price in a wide-open field.

Stagger Lee (POST 2) at 12-1 for Steven Miyadi and Drayden Van Dyke is worth a mention. Van Dyke is an accomplished rider, and at 12-1 in a wide-open turf mile, Stagger Lee (POST 2) deserves exotics consideration.

Spearfish (POST 4) at 20-1 for Javier Sierra and T.C. Baze and Grandisimo (POST 7) at 20-1 for Brian Cunningham and Abel Lezcano are the longest prices in the field. Both face significant challenges in this company.

Selections

Win: Pioneer Prince (POST 12) Place: Wizard Of Westwood (POST 10) Show: Keep Movin' On (POST 6)

Betting Strategy: Pioneer Prince (POST 12) is the logical single to close the card but the post position creates risk. Consider a win-place ticket on Pioneer Prince (POST 12) and box him in exactas with Wizard Of Westwood (POST 10), Joint Venture (POST 1), and Keep Movin' On (POST 6). The trifecta using Pioneer Prince (POST 12) and Wizard Of Westwood (POST 10) on top over Joint Venture (POST 1), Gold Foot (POST 5), and Keep Movin' On (POST 6) represents the best value play in the nightcap.

Jockey Notes and Insights

Joel Rosario is the dominant rider at the Del Mar summer meeting and surfaces in prime spots throughout today's card. He carries the load for Sadler on Eva Lea (POST 5) in Race 1, gets the call for Koriner on Bee Eye Gee (POST 1) in Race 4, rides Miller's Princess Jet (POST 4) in Race 6, partners with Early Encore (POST 3) for Sadler in the Graduating Stakes, and closes the card on Wizard Of Westwood (POST 10) in Race 8. Rosario's workload of five mounts across the card signals his centrality to the meet's wagering ecosystem. When Rosario has a 1-1 morning-line mount in a stakes race, as he does with Early Encore (POST 3), those races tend to be well-prepared and professionally run.

Kazushi Kimura is the busiest rider on the card, with mounts in Races 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, and 8. He is an active participant at the meet but his volume suggests he is a secondary rider filling in across multiple barns rather than receiving first call from the top connections. His most live mounts appear to be Not So Merry Mary (POST 8) in Race 5 and Druidic (POST 11) in Race 8.

Tiago Pereira appears in key spots throughout the card, including Tam's Little Angel (POST 4) in Race 1, Bazooka Charlie (POST 3) in Race 4, Mustang Knicky (POST 5) in Race 3, and King Kameha (POST 5) in Race 7. Pereira has shown strong form at the current Del Mar meeting and is a rider to follow in spots where his mounts are live.

T.C. Baze appears on Petite Marie (POST 1) in Race 5, Prime Listing (POST 7) in Race 7, and Spearfish (POST 4) in Race 8. Baze is a veteran of the Southern California turf scene and his three mounts today span different price levels, with Prime Listing (POST 7) in the Graduating Stakes as his most prominent assignment.

Umberto Rispoli gets the live call on First Time Listing (POST 10) in Race 5 for Simon Callaghan. The Callaghan-Rispoli combination on Del Mar turf is highly regarded and deserves attention on that mount.

Trainer Notes and Insights

Peter Miller is the trainer of the meet by volume and quality. He saddles horses in Races 2, 4, 6, 7, and 8, and has at least two runners in several of those races. His key entries today are Opus Uno (POST 5) and Marcos Performance (POST 6) in Race 4, Princess Jet (POST 4) and Lunar Velocity (POST 7) in Race 6, and Pioneer Prince (POST 12) in Race 8. Miller has been running at a high win percentage at Del Mar and his barns are conditioned meticulously for the seaside conditions. When Miller saddles two horses in the same race, one of those horses typically wins.

John Sadler is the other major barn presence today, with Eva Lea (POST 5) in Race 1 and Early Encore (POST 3) in Race 7. Sadler's win percentage at Del Mar during the summer has been excellent, and with Rosario in the irons on both primary choices, the Sadler barn's confidence level is high. Early Encore (POST 3) at even money in the Graduating Stakes is the clearest expression of that confidence.

Steve Knapp is the most active trainer on the card by number of entries, with horses in Races 1, 2, 3, 4, and 7. His presence across multiple races is notable, and his most live runners appear to be Mustang Knicky (POST 5) in Race 3 and King Kameha (POST 5) in Race 7. Knapp also runs Theresasilverlinin (POST 3) in Race 2 and Quick Sip (POST 4) as a secondary runner in Race 3.

Mark Rheinford has three runners on the card — Hurricane Way (POST 2) in Race 4, and Caisson (POST 3) in Race 8 — and previously was noted for conditioning Nokie at Los Alamitos. Rheinford places horses reliably at the claiming level and Hurricane Way (POST 2) in Race 4 deserves the 4-1 respect it gets on the morning line.

George Papaprodromou has Long Mayshe Reign (POST 6) in Race 1 eyeing a third straight grass sprint victory. Papaprodromou is a meticulous turf trainer whose horses tend to be sharp when they return to their preferred conditions. The trainer's ability to win with this filly back-to-back in the grass sprint format gives strong confidence for the hat trick today.

Tim Yakteen runs two in the turf maiden at Race 5, with Not So Merry Mary (POST 8) and Big Twist (POST 2). Yakteen's barn has been productive with turf maidens at Del Mar, and running two horses in the same race with Rosario on Big Twist (POST 2) and Kimura on Not So Merry Mary (POST 8) gives the stable strong dual coverage.

Best Wagering Strategies and Value Plays

The late Pick 4 from Race 5 through Race 8 is the marquee sequence of the card and deserves the most attention from serious exotic players.

In Race 5, the eleven-horse turf maiden creates the widest spread in the Pick 4. Use Not So Merry Mary (POST 8) as a single if you want to keep tickets manageable, or double up with First Time Listing (POST 10) if bankroll allows.

In Race 6, use both Miller runners, Princess Jet (POST 4) and Lunar Velocity (POST 7), as a pair. Including Make Me Money (POST 10) as a third option covers the outside threat.

In Race 7, Early Encore (POST 3) is the single. At 1-1 morning line, using anything else in this leg dramatically increases your ticket cost without proportional return. Single Early Encore (POST 3) here.

In Race 8, use Pioneer Prince (POST 12) and Wizard Of Westwood (POST 10) on top, with Keep Movin' On (POST 6) and Joint Venture (POST 1) as savers.

A representative Pick 4 ticket using Not So Merry Mary (POST 8) single in Race 5, Princess Jet (POST 4) and Lunar Velocity (POST 7) in Race 6, Early Encore (POST 3) single in Race 7, Pioneer Prince (POST 12) and Wizard Of Westwood (POST 10) in Race 8 creates eight combinations at $0.50 base costs $4. This is a highly efficient ticket that could return several hundred dollars if the Miller horses fire in Race 6 and Pioneer Prince (POST 12) closes late in the nightcap.

The Best Bet of the card remains Opus Uno (POST 5) in Race 4 with consensus handicapper support. A straight win bet of meaningful size on Opus Uno (POST 5) at 3-1 is the recommended single play of the day.

For exacta players, the Race 4 exacta with Opus Uno (POST 5) over Bee Eye Gee (POST 1) and Marcos Performance (POST 6) represents the clearest structure on the card. If Opus Uno (POST 5) runs his race, one of those two horses figures to be picking up second money.

The value spot of the card is Keep Movin' On (POST 6) in Race 8 at 12-1 on the Mark Glatt-Julien Leparoux connection on the turf. Use in trifectas and superfectas as the high-price element in what could be a wide-open nightcap. A $0.10 superfecta key of Pioneer Prince (POST 12) over Wizard Of Westwood (POST 10) and Joint Venture (POST 1) over Keep Movin' On (POST 6) and Gold Foot (POST 5) with all others represents excellent coverage for the final race of the day.
